GET THE LOOK Quartz Named Hottest Kitchen Trend

By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

One of the UK’s biggest selling home décor magazines, House Beautiful, has named quartz as this year’s coolest kitchen trend.

This doesn’t surprise us - composite quartz is no longer a luxury item but a reasonably priced investment for your home. With new colours, patterns and textures unveiled monthly, and the specifications continuously developing, the man-made surface has been out-selling natural stones like granite. We look at why that might be. Low-Maintenance - Composite quartz was developed as a durable, low maintenance surface, perfect for any busy home or business. It’s stain, scratch and heat resistant, wipe clean and doesn’t need resealing annually unlike some natural stones. If you’re looking for a worktop material that needs nothing more than a wipe down, can withstand the heat of pots and pans, and won’t stain easily, quartz is for you. Versatile Styles - There are many brands of composite quartz selling in the UK. Silestone and Caesarstone are two of the most well-known, each with over 50 designs. This means there’s a quartz to suit every kitchen style. From industrious dark greys, copper complimenting faux marbles and ultracontemporary matte whites, you’re sure to find something to suit your style. Sculptured Island Tops - Quartz can be used to create another of this year’s hottest home trends – sculptured island units. Open plan kitchens are still as popular as ever, with island units dividing kitchen and living space. To make the island units a real feature, people are getting creative with their designs. Quartz can be mitred together to create seamless edges and unique shapes. Multi-Textured - Many quartz brands produce their materials in both polished and matte finishes, meaning you can include multiple work surface textures in your kitchen.

very month we focus on particular music groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. This month we spsoke to Simon Diegan, a fantastic local guitarist, performer and event organisor!

did your interest in Q: How music start?

: My interest in music started with the A Beatles but with some excellent school teachers who encouraged listening to a wide range of music it quickly embraced

the likes of Fairport Convention, Bob Dylan, Ralph McTell and trips to my local folk club in Swindon.

was the first instrument you Q: What learnt how to play?

: After my first plastic Beatles guitar A (probably would now be worth a fortune!) and studying Bert Weedon’s Play In A Day, I joined the school skiffle/jug

band playing acoustic guitar. I picked up my first melodeon in 1973 and within a couple of months started playing for the university morris dance side.

Q: Who influences you musically? Having grown up in the sixties and A: seventies there were so many musical influences that shaped what and how I play today but the thread of singer/

songwriters throughout my lifetime such as Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Sandy Denny, Jimmy Webb, John Tams, Ralph McTell to name but a few and also not forgetting that bands such as Steely Dan, Pink Floyd and the Beatles all made their particular mark. That said, my love of traditional music and dance continues and forever shall it be!

us about your band and live Q: Tell performances?? Lane is a three piece acoustic A: Reunion band where I am joined by the very talented David and Alison Fenner.

We first played together in 1981 when we were invited by (then) Thame based Steve Heap to work on a musical project called Mr

Humphries Railway which toured arts centres in the UK and Sweden. We play most weeks in venues in and around the Chilterns performing three part a Cappella singing and deliver traditional, contemporary and self penned songs that feature a mix of acoustic instruments including melodeon, concertina, guitar, mandola, ukulele and bass.

Q: What are you involved in locally? moved to Thame in July last year A: Having I am very impressed and so delighted as to how vibrant the music and arts scene is in the area. We have played at the

excellent First Thursday Music Club and at the Swan Hotel open mic session and hope to engage as fully as we can in the many venues in and around the town. As part of my New Year/New Challenge philosophy I also recently started drum lessons at the Thame Music Academy! For the past five years I have been MC at Towersey Festival working the Festival Green stage.

A great day out for all the family!

The Abingdon Air and Country Show is one of Oxfordshire’s largest volunteer organised events which raises money for the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and other smaller worthwhile causes whilst putting on a great day out for all the family. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 14th May at Dalton Barracks, just off the A415 between Abingdon and Marcham.

N

ow in it’s eighteenth year this volunteer run, Oxfordshire event is one of the most popular outdoor shows in the area attracting visitors from far and wide. This year’s event hosts all the usual attractions including music and dance, vintage vehicles including ex-Military and miniature steam engines, children’s attractions from fun fair rides to Punch and Judy, re-enactment groups, static displays, trade stalls and a craft marquee, food and drink. Static aircraft will be flying in allowing general aviation pilots to put Abingdon airfield in their log book.

They are followed by first time displays by a Dutch-based replica CAC Boomerang making its UK debut, the RF4 Motorglider, the Antonov AN2 the world’s biggest bi-plane and the Great War Display Team. Rich Goodwin will display his ‘Muscle Pitts’, a much altered Pitts Special doing things a plane shouldn’t do! Amongst the many other aeroplanes and helicopters we have displaying, we also welcome for the first time the DeHavilland Sea Vixen, a 1950s Royal Navy carrier-borne jet aircraft. Tickets will be available on the day but advance tickets are available both online and from various outlets in an around Oxfordshire.

However there is also a number of exciting new attractions both on the ground and in the air.

See you there!

There’s the Mangelwurzels and Britain’s Got Talent contestant Ellie May joining us in the music tent. In the arena we have the Buckingham Search and Rescue Dogs and the Caledonian Marching Band. From today’s Army, 3 & 4 Regiments Royal Logistic Corps, No. 7 Rifles and RAF 4624 Auxiliary Squadron, RAF Brize Norton will be putting on displays of their vehicles and equipment. The Cotswold Pheasant and Poultry Club will be showing off their birds. A very special welcome also, goes to No. 322 Squadron Royal Netherlands Air Force with their highly advanced Spitfire Simulator, make sure you speak to them and have a go! It is the same in the air as Classic Jets get us off the ground displaying their highly technical model aircraft.

In the spotlight...

Volvo V90 Cross Country

MOTORING

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

For those who like versatility and might need to venture into the rough, Volvo’s V90 Cross Country has recently come on the scene.

The Cross Country moniker was actually ushered in by

Volvo some two decades ago, and it’s good that the new V90 can be had in this format.

By elevating the ride height, throwing in four-wheel drive and adding body cladding, the Cross Country offers the perfect balance of estate car and robust 4X4.This means you can still drive a family motor without having to go for a bulkier SUV. But, Volvo does offer the XC90 SUV should the V90 Cross Country not be quite the mud-plugger you need. The Cross Country touch has, over the last 20 years, given Volvos that extra something – it’s made cars with this name tagged on the end more interesting to look at, and more flexible in terms of where you can drive them. The V90 Cross Country is a handsome piece of work all round. Its kerbside appeal is lifted even further, thanks to its 65mm higher stance, plastic wheelarch coverings, skid plates, off-road tyres and ‘Cross Country’ lettering on the back bumper. The eye-catching look continues inside, with electrically operated cross-stitched leather seats and matte wood dash inlays. The V90 Cross Country also comes with a touchscreen sat-nav system, and a powered tailgate that you can operate from the cabin. My test car was fitted with the D5 engine, coupled up to an eight-speed, smooth-shifting automatic transmission. The D5 is a 2.0-litre turbo diesel unit delivering 235PS - a well-judged output for a large family car. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 7.5 seconds, but it is cost-effective, too. If you see over 50mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be knocked for six.

tyres to work their magic off-road. Indeed, a quick jaunt along a dirt trail and across an undulating field demonstrated the Cross Country’s split character admirably. With its raised ride height, it has decent ground clearance to avoid grating its underbelly on stones, and its off-road mode allows the Volvo to crawl through thick muddy stuff ably. Add in its factoryfitted hill descent control to the mix and the V90 Cross Country has enough about it to bring the fight to the full-fat SUV market. At £43,585 for the V90 Cross Country D5, it makes you wonder why you’d want to pay £47,340 for an entry level Volvo XC90. I guess having seven seats, instead of five, would be the only reason.

FAST FACTS

Volvo claims it has tried to tune the car to feel like the standard V90 on the tarmac - and the company has, in my opinion, largely accomplished this ambition. The Cross Country is fairly nimble to wield on the road, and it feels energetic, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering. Furthermore, while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from vast, due to how compliant it is.

Back Pain and Sciatica... I have lost count of the number of clients who present in my clinic with Back Pain. Every body is different and therefore each experience of pain and lifestyle limitation is experienced in differing ways. The majority of my clients present with chronic pain, often having tried to gain relief from prescriptive medication, physiotherapy, diagnostic scans and referrals for interventional procedures. Untreated pain can interfere with the healing process by affecting the immune system and leading to other undesirable issues. Specifically this discomfort can impede exercise and lifestyle, which risks psychological distress. Pain is inherently subjective and chronic pain tends to be difficult to treat. Whilst the majority of back pain is self limiting, consideration must be given to the physical and psychological implications; Bowen/Neuro Structural (Spinal) Integration Therapy is a treatment of choice and has a well documented record of success in the treatment of Back Pain which is good news for Low Back Pain and Sciatica sufferers. New guidelines published by NICE - the National Institute for Clinical Excellence - in November 2016 for the treatment of lower back pain, with and without sciatica concur with the way in which Bowen Therapists treat paitents. In brief I am picking up on a few ( recommended )points that are always included in my consultations & treatments;

- Reassurance & encouragement to continue with normal activities - Information about the nature of Low Back Pain and Sciatica - Physical activity / supportive exercise plans / programmes to improve fitness - Psychological approach / Return to work NICE provides national guidance to improve health and social care. Evidence based guidance, advice and information services are available for key groups, including GP’s, local government, healthcare professional and the public. Occasionally, during a treatment, symptoms may ‘ flag up’ underlying back problems. It should be noted howeve that although my clients are assessed at every treatment it is not my remit to diagnose but to help my client seek immediate medical attention.
