The Sound of Music: Simon Markland updates us on the latest music events and we meet the man behind the Thame Music Festival.

Hello Readers,

Welcome to the May Edition of Look Local Magazine! Typical! As soon as the Easter holidays are over and the kids go back to school the sun decides to make its appearance. Not that I’m complaining, its been a long time coming. I’ve never really seen myself as someone who is massively affected by the weather but even I have started to tire of this long drawn out winter we’ve been having of late. It’s amazing isn’t it how a little bit of Vitamin D helps to lift our moods and make us feel more motivated. If you’re the same and looking to ramp up your exercise regime in readiness for summer then turn to page 23 for Thame Therapy Clinic’s article all about the level of exercise that is right for you! We also have an article by a new advertiser, Ria Barlow, about the art of Swedish massage - turn to page 24 to read more or better still, book yourself an appointment and indulge in a bit of ‘me time’!

23. Health & Wellbeing: How can Osteopathy help you get the best out of exercise. Thame Therapy Clinic explain.

With lots of local events coming up this month and into early June there’s plenty of opportunity to get out and about and take advantage of the weather with family and friends. Why not start with the Abingdon Air and Country Show on Sunday 6th May and keep a look out on our Facebook Page for details of the competition winners - is it you...?

24. Health & Wellbeing: The art of Swedish Massage with Nurturia.

And until next month, take care and enjoy reading...

GET THE LOOK CLEAN AND CARE TIPS FOR YOUR GRANITE, MARBLE OR By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

QUARTZ KITCHEN WORKTOP

K

itchen worktops in natural stone or composite quartz are a stylish and durable addition to your home. Heat, stain and scratch resistant these low maintenance materials are perfect for tough environments like busy family homes or businesses, especially when compared to wood or glass. But even the toughest cookies need some love and care, particularly when subject to the assaults of everyday life - excessive moisture, acidic spills and sharp objects. Here are some tips to keeping your granite, marble and quartz worktops looking lovely for longer. Seal of approval – Granite and man-made quartz are relatively non-porous compared to their softer sister marble, who is at risk of staining if exposed to potent liquids like red wine. However all worktops need to be sealed to boost their stain resisting properties. Check your supplier has sealed your worktop properly before it’s fitted, and then reseal yourself every 1-2 years for marble, and every 5 for granite and quartz. We recommend Dry Treat’s Stain Proof Plus which can be bought on their online shop at www.drytreat.com. Don’t scour – Scouring pads and sponges may lift layers of sealer leaving your worktop vulnerable to staining. They can also scratch the surface if used on softer stones like marble or limestone. Instead leave sticky stains to soak under soapy water. Too harsh – Similarly to scouring pads, bleaches and other harsh cleaning chemicals can lift layers of seal from your quartz, marble or granite worktop. Instead use a mild dish soap or PH neutral surface cleaner with a dish cloth. Buff it – This one is not a necessity but for an extra shiny, just fitted look, buff your worktop once a week with a stone polish and soft cloth. Pledge have a good multi-surface polish, or we recommend Granite Clean and Sheen which you can buy from us by contacting via our website www.coulonstone.com.

A great day out for all the family celebrating RAF100!

One of Oxfordshire’s largest volunteer organised events, the 19th The Abingdon Air and Country Showwill this year be held on Sunday 6th May at Dalton Barracks, just off the A415 between Abingdon and Marcham.

T

his year’s most important date, however, was April 1st which marked the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force. Borne out of the Army’s Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service the RAF became the world’s first and oldest independent air force. We are currently awaiting RAF participation but we will have a unique selection of privately owned aircraft and gliders both on the ground and in the air to celebrate this historic event. We have all the usual ground attractions including music and dance, falconry, vintage vehicles and children’s attractions from fun fair rides to magic shows, re-enactment groups, trade stalls, craft marquee plus food and drink. However, once again we have a number of exciting new additions including the Team Green Rockets Children’s Motorcycle Team, Abingdon Sea Cadets Marching Band, a display of equipment by the RAF Joint Helicopter Support Squadron and pony rides. We also welcome the return of many of our popular attractions including tank rides, the Mangledwurzels, Abingdon Rock Choir, Oxford Caledonian Pipes and Drums, Radio Days Big Band, Doctor Who’s Daleks, Farms2Ewe plus No. 322 Squadron Royal Netherlands Air Force with their highly advanced Spitfire Simulator! In the air Classic Jets start the flying display with their highly technical model aircraft. The Great War Display Team represent the period just before the formation of the RAF whilst a Beech 18 shows classic the lines of a 1930’s small airliner.

Spitfires, a Lancaster and Hurricane along with a Harvard, Catalina and a German Buchon ME109 take us through WWII. A Strikemaster shows off early jet trainer design put to military use, the Antonov AN2 the world’s biggest bi-plane will drop parachutists and helicopter pleasure flights will take place all day. Rich Goodwin will display his ‘Muscle Pitts’ racing an Aston Martin along the runway! Amongst the many other aeroplanes and helicopters we have displaying, we are proud to welcome for the first time a Sea Fury T.20 from the Royal Naval Historic Flight. Tickets will be available on the day but reduced price advance tickets are available both online and from various outlets in an around Oxfordshire,

See you there! 2018 Sponsors

Midsomer Tours Are Back..! A new season of Midsomer guided walking

tours has returned to Thame, following their highly successful début last year. Six trained volunteer tour guides took 200 people on Midsomer tours last year, visiting filming locations in the town centre used in episodes of the popular ITV series Midsomer Murders. Thame is one of the most frequently used filming locations, with 21 locations in the town centre. Midsomer Murders is still going strong after 20 years, with new filming taking place in Thame just last year. Becky Reid, market town coordinator at Thame Town Council, commented, ‘6.5 million people watch Midsomer Murders in the UK and millions more worldwide. It’s one of the UK’s biggest TV exports, and when people see it on TV, they want to come and visit the beautiful towns and villages of Midsomer, such as Thame. While here, they spend money in our restaurants, pubs, hotels, and shops – which is good for the town and its economy’. Amongst Thame landmarks that have been featured are Thame Museum, Market House,

Rumsey’s Chocolaterie, the Spread Eagle and Swan Hotels, the Coffee House, and the Black Horse brasserie. Thame Town Hall itself has been portrayed as Causton Town Hall. Visitors can pretend they really are outside Causton Town Hall by asking at the Information Centre for a specially produced Causton sign to be hung over the Town Hall sign. Perfect for pictures to show your friends and family back home! The tours take place weekly until the end of October, on Wednesdays at 11.00am. Tickets

cost £7.50 each and may be purchased online at www.ticketsource.co.uk/thamemidsomer or at the Town Hall.

ON THE MIC...

This month we have a very special interview with Johnnie Littler, Thame Town Music Festival Director: 1. How did the idea for TTMF first come an about? In 1987 Simple Minds released a album Live in the City of Light that had the in rt conce or outdo their of graph photo centre of Locarno in Switzerland. The whole market square was filled with people enjoying d a brilliant gig with the sun setting. I looke ht thoug and e Tham in centre town at our why don’t we do that? Then I thought about Edinburgh festival and how ever available space is used for performance. So I decided a that’s what we have to do! Last year was l, free multi-genre, multi venue music festiva nt which attracted 8,000 visitors into our brillia market town to see 59 acts and over 200 performers. 2. What are the main values of the se festival? We are very proud of our purpo and our values. We believe that original, live al music is an important part of our cultur a life. We see the creation of music as giving voice to expression and a source of joy. We believe it is our role to try and help musicians to and artists to be able to bring their music as wide an audience as they can. There are c, many talented artists working in specifi d non-mainstream genres, with very limite help can we who areas al region in ts budge

Entertainment through creating performance opportunities and introducing them to a supportive infrastructure and appropriate advice and introductions in the music industry. The music festival ethos is:

practical advice and instruction on producing, marketing, booking agents, song-writing and getting radio play. The convention is aimed at Career musicians, amateur/semi-professional, unsigned musicians and those with an interest in and passion for greater insight and knowledge of the music business. It will be brilliant.

We will treat everyone as we would wish to be treated.

We will do each task as well as we can.

We focus on music, particularly original and authentic music.

5. And what is the Songwriters’ competition? This is also new for 2018. As part of our mission to help unsigned musicians and performers bring their music to a wider audience and to showcase and support new talent we are delighted to be running the TTMF songwriters’ competition again sponsored by Christopher Ward Limited.

3. How many venues will this year’s event have? We are up to 9 venues this year including our brilliant outdoor main stage in front of the Town Hall. We close the roads so the whole town becomes a party place. We are also using most of the venues we used last year but have added the Swan Hotel and The Six Bells. Our band venues are the Snooker Club, the Six Bells and the James Figg. Our singer songwriter/acoustic venues are the Birdcage, The Swan and The Cross Keys. We have, also, added a Friday night classical concert in St.Mary’s Church and a Songwriters Competition and Music Industry Convention in the Barns Centre!

In June a panel of 3 judges from the music industry will select 10 finalists who will be invited to perform their song to an audience on Friday 13th July in Thame Barns Centre. The judges will then select a winner based upon: originality, creativity, lyrics, melody and overall likeability. The winner will be given the opportunity to perform on the Festival main stage on Saturday 14th July, be nominated for the CW Challenger programme for financial and corporate support and the song will be professionally recorded and videoed for use by the artist. The winner will also receive promotion and support from the TTMF and its affiliates.

4. Could you tell us more about the Convention side of TTMF? This year we are expanding the scope of the festival to include a music industry convention. It is aimed at supporting and educating musicians and to help them understand how the music business works. There will be a networking element so people can make useful contacts and gain advice on advancing their musical careers. We are very grateful that the Convention is sponsored by Christopher Ward Limited, the luxury watch company who share our ethos of helping people achieve their dreams.

6. The festival covers a large variety of genres, which acts do you have confirmed so far? We have Rock, Blues, Classical, Americana, Folk, Singer-songwriter, Swing, Jazz – something for everyone. Our headliner is the legendary R ’n B band Dr. Feelgood. We also have announced our first wave of artists which includes Rob Heron and the Teapad Orchestra, The August list, Van Susans, Luke Conconnan, Loud Mountains, and many more. We are thrilled that we have had over 250 acts apply to play.

It is a ticketed event held in the Thame Barns Centre, on Saturday 14th July. The convention will be hosted by Tom Robinson (singer and BBC Radio 6 Music broadcaster and leading advocate of new music) and the programme covers Keynote speaker: Martyn Ware (Human League and Heaven 17), “Meet the maker” panellist sessions with artists, producers John Leckie and George Shilling, A&R, Record Labels, Managers and promoters. We have panellists representing views and experience from major main stream, regional and independent viewpoints. In the small barn we are hosting workshop interactive sessions given by industry experts aimed at giving

7. If people would like to get involved or find out more, who should they contact? We are a not for profit Community Interest Company run entirely by unpaid volunteers, so if anyone can help with sponsorship, or wants to apply to be a performer, stallholder or volunteer for the day then please visit our website and follow the links. EXERCISE what’s good for me?

Osteopaths are often asked to advise clients on appropriate levels of exercise as well as specific exercises for injured joints and muscles. Jacklin, Osteopath at Thame Therapy Clinic, Ebony Jacklin explains the thinking behind exercise… www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

Exercise is essential to keep

us healthy. The government recommends that adults should do at least two and half hours of exercise every week, this should be broken down into at least five thirty minute periods. This can be difficult with today’s busy life. Long commutes and stressful work environments often leave us feeling too tired by the end of the day to do anything. Exercise however does not need to be difficult. Fitting a half hour brisk walk into your lunch hour is often achievable and may even lead to the afternoons being more productive and seeming to pass more quickly. You could also include doing the garden, going to the gym, cycling anything that will work up a little bit of a sweat or get you breathing a bit harder. Exercise helps us stay healthy by causing a little bit of stress to our bodies to encourage it to

become more efficient. This lowers our risks of many common conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer and it’s never too late to start. Exercise has also been shown to boost people’s mental health as well, reducing symptoms of depression and helping selfesteem. So there are lots of good reasons to get out there and burn some calories but are there any downsides? Certainly, if you’ve not

exercised for sometime then it can be a daunting prospect. Walking is the best way to start and risks with walking are very low; the benefits certainly outweigh the risks. If you want to do something more energetic then there are a few things to consider to help keep injuries to a minimum. First of all warm up, get your muscles ready for what you are about to do by doing simple repetitive exercises to get the blood flowing then after exercise spend some time doing a cool down and stretch. As Osteopaths we are well placed to help with advice and exercises to help get you going and should an injury occur then Osteopaths are qualified to both make a diagnosis and start a treatment plan to get you on the road to recovery. Come and see us at Thame Therapy Clinic either for advice or for treatment for injuries.

For more information about how Osteopathy could help you call 01844 215555 or email, info@thametherapyclinic.co.uk

How are you feeling today...?

Under Pressure? Tired? Low Mood? Anxious? In Pain? Stressed Out? Depressed? Maybe you’re feeling ok but just in need of some ‘me’ time. At Nurturia you come first; it’s time forget your to-do list. This is just you, your needs and someone whose priority is your well-being.

M

y name is Ria Barlow and I’m a highly qualified Holistic & Therapeutic Massage Therapist. As a holistic practitioner, I treat my client as a whole, considering their emotional and spiritual wellbeing, as well as their physical body. Using this method of massage, I create individual treatment plans that are specifically tailored to each of my clients. The massage therapy I offer incorporates traditional Swedish massage techniques as well as specific relaxation techniques unique to the school of massage I graduated with (Oxford School of Massage). Swedish techniques differ from other types of massage in that they follow a specific order which allows for the optimum outcome. The area being worked on is first warmed up and then deeper techniques are used as necessary to relieve tension and increase oxygenation of blood and release metabolic waste such as lactic and uric acids from the tissues of the muscles. Swedish massage techniques can help not only relieve physical stress but also emotional stress and can have other medical and therapeutic uses. Most of us have too much stress in our lives. The curse of modern living! The effect massage can have on reducing stress is huge. Consider this: it is estimated that stress is the cause of approximately 75% of all disease. I wonder if you are as shocked as I was on hearing this? Stress cannot be ‘cured’. However, if stress is managed it no longer has a damaging effect on our lives. For many, knowing this is enough to encourage them to actively invest in relaxation. Like eating well and taking regular exercise, incorporating regular massage into your life can help you live your best life. Massage has a huge number of benefits to all the systems of the body. By massaging and relaxing the muscles there is a domino effect to all the other systems of the body. It brings about a relaxation that brings the body into homeostasis, a state of balance, where the body can repair and renew. If massage therapy is undertaken regularly the benefits accumulate meaning that as well as the many immediate effect’s there is also a wealth of positive long-term effects that you can experience.

So whether you’re seeking relaxation, invigoration, pain relief or just sheer indulgence Holistic & Therapeutic Massage is for you.

Back Pain - Bowen / NST treatments are the way forward when your Doctor is unable to help...

STOP PRESS...

‘Useless jabs for back pain cost the NHS £40m a year’ and Back pain treatments are useless ( medical ) experts warn’ These are just two headlines in a national newspaper published in recent weeks! So what does this mean for the millions suffering from back pain?

The following are quotes from these articles: Qu.1: “Exercise and psychological therapy are the only things that work for most cases of chronic back pain’ Job satisfaction and a positive attitude are the strongest indicators of whether back pain will turn into a serious disability.”

In many cases surgery is still being offered as an option; and indeed this may be essential if symptoms are ‘red flagged’ i.e. for specific conditions or spinal injury but it should not be performed for back pain. However, and to quote, “ The average benefit to surgery is modest at best and there are serious harms”

So how will you proceed when the medics are unable to help? In my clinic not a week goes by without me seeing back pain clients. Some present acutely i.e. with a recent injury; many come and see me with a history of chronic pain; and many come to clinic on a regular basis having resolved their back pain issues for maintenance sessions. Back pain is inherently subjective and chronic pain tends to be difficult to treat. Whilst the majority of back pain is self-limiting, consideration is given to physical and psychological implications. Bowen / Neuro Structural Integration Therapy is a treatment of choice and has a well documented record of success for the treatment of back pain and sciatica. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

Qu.2: “Back pain is Britain’s leading cause of disability with up to nine million estimated to suffer from it. Patients often demand a “quick fix” and are being given pointless drugs, surgery, injections and needless scans. A report in The Lancet said that back pain was routinely badly treated, with patients being given risky procedures and addictive painkillers. Guidelines from NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in 2016 - which readers will have noted that I reported on at that time - said guidelines are not being followed and therefore doctors may be slowing up recovery times”.

Dementia or untreated hearing loss

Is it possible that hearing loss is misdiagnosed as dementia? Or does having untreated hearing loss increase the risk of developing dementia?

They may be starting to withdraw from their usual social activities, doubt their own judgement and lack confidence. All these signs can be demonstrated by someone who is simply struggling to hear.

In truth, it is possible to answer ‘yes’ to both these questions but the good news is there are positive steps you can take to improve the outcome. Let’s take a closer look.

Even the verbal tests for dementia can be misleading since it is very difficult to follow an instruction or answer a question correctly if you haven’t heard what has been asked of you.

Research in recent years has established a link between hearing loss and dementia and has shown that cognitive function is affected by a reduced level of hearing. Studies have shown that having impaired hearing can lead to a 30-40% greater risk of cognitive decline. Hearing stimulates brain cells and keeps the person mentally engaged and active.

Paula Cook is an Audiologist at Aston Hearing with a special interest in dementia. She says, “Hearing should always be a consideration when measuring someone’s cognitive ability. Even an element of hearing loss can add to cognitive decline and a hearing solution may well alleviate some of the symptoms.”

It makes sense therefore to address hearing loss early, keeping your brain active and helping you enjoy the activities you love. Avoiding the social isolation that often comes with hearing difficulties can reduce the risk of cognitive ability being affected. So, is it hearing loss or dementia, or both? Aston Hearing have long recognised the similarities between the two conditions. We regularly meet people who have signs of early dementia which are the same as those of untreated hearing loss. For example, people often appear confused, disorientated, frustrated and disengaged.

In the spotlight... All-New Skoda Karoq Review

MOTORING

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

@carwriteups Everyone’s making new sport utility vehicles (SUVs) these days. And Skoda is the latest marque to become part of the trend with its Karoq.

T

he compact SUV is based on the VW Tiguan and supersedes the admired Yeti, which was a bit of a star car for many. So, is the Karoq as impressive as the wellloved Yeti? Well, it’s more elegant than the boxy Yeti, but not as distinct. That alone could possibly harm Karoq sales, but it could also make the Skoda sell like hot-cakes. Only time will tell. Step inside the Karoq, and this is where things are different compared with the outgoing Yeti. The interior design is more contemporary, and that’s a welcome factor. Generally, the Karoq does precisely what Skoda and parent firm Volkswagen does so well, and that’s avoiding causing any offence. As with all Skoda/VW vehicles, there’s a decent range of powerplants on offer - two diesels and two petrol units. The petrol engines work well in the compact Karoq. However, if you’re going to cover loads of miles, diesel will be the way you need to go. You’ll probably be happy with the 1.0-litre, threecylinder TSI petrol. It produces 115PS, which is a good amount of clout for an engine with the volume of about three bottles of Coca-Cola. Skoda claims you’ll get 50mpg from this power unit, too. I drove the Edition 2.0 TDI 150PS 4x4 manual version, which has far more muscle and is the sort of car you’ll love if you like to cruise. It’ll also handle a little bit of towing and some gentle off-roading.

this tech, all you have to do is make a kicking movement and the boot opens. This is great if your hands are full of shopping or you have an infant on your hip. Skoda is known for being bountiful with kit, so there are other features that make the Karoq an SUV to consider. One of these is the wireless charging pad for your phone. Smartphone integration is also available, so you can connect your Android and Apple smartphones to the Karoq. If that’s not enough, you can also find treats like climate control, heated seats and cruise control. Skoda is excellent at value-for-money, and the Karoq is no exception. It’s wellequipped, comfortable, practical and economical. It is a good bet if you’re looking for a compact SUV.

FAST FACTS

On the road, the Karoq is far better than the Yeti ever was. It is a more comfortable car for starters, with less intrusion from the pitted road surfaces we must endure in the UK. It also has far more capability in the corners, with less body roll than the Yeti.

(Karoq Edition 2.0 TDI 150PS 4x4 manual - as tested)

Skoda makes a big thing about its ‘Simply Clever’ slogan and rightly so. The Karoq’s rear seats can be folded down all at once, or individually. You can even remove them if you really want to turn the car into a van. As well as smart stowage solutions, like an umbrella hidden under the driver’s seat, there are little things such as virtual ‘pedal’ under the back bumper. With

Food & Drink

A grape taste of Summer...

As well as stocking local artisan food produce, small batch spirits and quality homeware

products, The Deli at No.5 also sell a number of fine wines sourced from across the UK. Many of these wines have been tried and tested by Hannah & Joe so they can advise customers on their flavours, unique characteristics and what food items they are best served with. Now spring has firmly arrived and summer will be with us before long, Hannah & Joe share with us, their ‘TOP 4 British Wines’ for Spring/Summer, chosen as they evoke feelings of warm, bright evenings and alfresco dining in the sun due to the light, crisp and fruity taste they leave on the pallete. Cairn O’Mohr - Gooseberry and Elderflower Hedgerow fruit Wine from Scotland (Still) Light and aromatic, our Elderflower wine is made from fluffy wild flowers from the Sidlaw hills. Blossoms are hand picked, stripped, and pressed by bonny maidens and swarthy blokes, occasionally from afar. A beautifully light, fragrant, summery, white wine. Camel Valley Bacchus, Cornwall (Still) Delicate, pale lime-green in the glass with white peach and nuances of grape on the nose. Succulent palate displaying greengage with hints of mango and tangerine. A distinctive fruity bouquet and a grapey flavour. Perfect with seafood. Brightwell Vineyard Oxford Rose (Still) This rosé wine is produced solely from Dornfelder grapes. The juice has had brief contact with the red grape skins to give a vibrant colour and a gentle tannin strength to the wine. A refreshing drink by itself or with fish, salads, pasta and picnics. With an initial cherry flavour, Oxford Rose fades to a strawberry finish. Daws Hill Vineyard, Radnage, Sparkling Rose Daws Hill is a Sparkling wine vineyard set in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Beauty. In 2004, 3,000 vines were planted, with a further 2,100 planted in 2007. They use the traditional al champagnes grapes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, along with Auxerrios, which is very similar to Chardonnay. They hand pick to guarentee only the finest quailty. The sparkling wines are made with traditional yeasts and techniques, bottle fermenting and resting on the lees often over 3 years.
