In the spotlight... 2019 Range Rover Evoque Review
MOTORING
@carwriteu
ps Having pioneered the luxury compact SUV market, with global sales of over 772,096, the new Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the original. Combining Range Rover heritage with cutting-edge technology – designed, engineered and manufactured in Britain – it meets the needs of today’s customers.
The
outstanding volume and proportions are amplified by its pronounced shoulders and powerful wheel arches that, alongside new 21-inch wheels, combine to create a strong and dynamic attitude. Inside, the finely crafted design integrates uncluttered surfaces and simple lines with curated materials to create a luxurious, minimalist, digital cabin. It is designed to be a calm and serene space, ensuring comfortable and happy occupants, with technologies such as the twin touchscreen Touch Pro Duo system,16-way seat controls and cabin air ionisation that complement the increased interior space. The footprint is almost identical, yet built on Land Rover’s new mixed-material Premium Transverse Architecture, there is more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear kneeroom and an increase in small item stowage – the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10 per cent larger (591 litres) as well as much wider and easily fits a folded pram or set of golf clubs. The new architecture has been developed for electrification, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available at launch and a plug-in hybrid model offered soon. Available across the range (when specified with an automatic gearbox) of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel engines, the mild hybrid delivers low CO2 emissions and excellent fuel economy. Every bit a Range Rover, the compact SUV combines all-terrain capability with all-weather assurance. The new Evoque features All-Wheel Drive, as well as a second-generation Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect to enhance efficiency and Adaptive Dynamics to deliver the optimum balance of comfort and agility. The famed Range Rover command driving position has jumped into the digital age, with a segment-first

‘ClearSight rear-view mirror’ that transforms into an HD video screen. If rear visibility is compromised by passengers or bulky items, the driver simply flicks a switch on the underside of the mirror and a camera feed from the top of the car displays what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition. The new Range Rover Evoque is also the first in the world to feature Ground View technology, which effectively makes the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. This is useful when negotiating difficult parking spaces, navigating high city centre kerbs or tackling rough terrain.

Coulon Stone’s Restoration of a Local Landmark...
Coulon Stone is coming up to its 30th year of supplying customers with beautiful natural stone surfaces. With three decades of knowledge, creativity and customer service under our belt, the projects we’re asked to work on get more and more exciting with every year. One such project we recently completed was restoring the floor of one of our local churches, and the set of multiple murders.
Holy Trinity is a Grade 1 listed church dating back to the 12th and 13th century. It has eight bells, Buckinghamshire’s oldest door and fragments of medieval paintings can still be seen on its walls. However, more commonly known local trivia surrounding the church is that it’s been the set of three episodes of Midsomer Murders, as well as an episode of Miss Marple.
that a Portuguese limestone, Gascoigne Blue, would be the most appropriate. Its close in tone to the rest of the building, it’s uniquely beautiful with flecks of smokey blue and glimpses of fossils, but most importantly it’s very hard wearing, perfect for a floor that will be well trodden for hundreds of years to come. We ordered the stone directly from the quarry in Portugal before our expert stonemasons cut it to shape and handfinished it in our factory. They then spent a couple of week’s back breaking-ly laying it in place. We’re extremely proud to have worked on the restoration of this local landmark, and to know that the work of our stonemasons will live on for potentially hundreds of years.
Coulon Stone have gained a great reputation for restoration work to some of Britain’s oldest buildings. We’ve worked at Windsor Castle and several churches, including the one in Stokenchurch, whose architects approached us to work on Holy Trinity. After measuring up the whole floor, as well as steps leading in to the church, we worked with the architects to choose the best stone. It was agreed

Rupert Hilton (MCIOB, AssocRICS, MScCHE, BA(Hons) is one of the few heritage professionals in the country to be a Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Conservation Accredited Building Surveyor and a Chartered Institute of Building Conservation Certified Consultant. Over the next 4 issues of Look Local Magazine, Rupert will be on hand to answer your questions in this area.
Q. Can I put double glazing in my listed building? The short answer is yes, but you will need to jump through the ever-increasing number of obstacles put in front of you by the local authority’s planning depart in the shape of the dreaded ‘statutory consents’, i.e. Listed building consent. You will also need to apply for a Building Notice from the Building Control Department if your installer isn’t FENSA registered, to ensure that your property complies with Part L1B of the Building Regulations (Conservation of Fuel & Power in Existing Dwellings) – if your property is a domestic. It must be said, this is a much easier process than dealing with the hugely over stretched and under resourced planning departments.
SAME DAY SKIP HIRE AND
GRAB SERVICE
It is worth at this point deviating slightly into the field of ‘heritage value’ sometimes referred to as ‘significance’. The Planning, Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas Act (1990) Section 7 states: ‘..no person shall execute or cause to be executed any works for the demolition of a listed building or for its alteration or extension in any manner which would affect its character as a building of special architectural or historic interest, unless the works are authorised.’ I know what you’re thinking - what is my building’s character and special architectural or historic interest? Good question! Your building is listed for a reason, but it is a common misconception that this relates to it being old. ‘Significance’ can relate to lots of things, for example it may be a rare example of a construction type or a famous person may have once lived there, or it may be somehow linked to a famous historic event. Part of my job is therefore defining what the building’s special interest is and then proposing solutions to your problems which do not have a negative impact on it. Getting back to the original question… If you want to install double glazed units and you feel that they do not negatively impact on the building’s special interest, then you should be fine. But please always run this by a conservation professional or the Local Authority first!

Sydenham Village Fayre returns for 2019 Saturday 1st June – 12.30pm to 4:00pm
T
his fun family day returns once more to offer visitors from far and wide a great day of live entertainment, children’s games, dog show, vintage cars, BBQ, tea room and stalls. The annual event, co-ordinated and run entirely by villagers, raises funds for local groups and causes, supporting schools, community organisations and facilities in the surrounding area. Last year it raised over £5,000 for local causes. The Fayre centres around the picturesque village green and this year’s programme is packed with exciting shows and activities. Live entertainment will be taking place all day, including performances from ‘The Ted Roper Band’, Morris Men and local school children. Stokenchurch Judo Club has also agreed to put on a demonstration for spectators. There will be plenty for kids to do, including the Fayre’s own ‘Kids’ Corner’ featuring hourly shows from the magical Mr Marvel and a variety of games for all ages. Stalls will be selling toys and kids will also be able to enjoy the inflatable assault course. There will be food and drink galore, including the delicious BBQ hosted by Sydenham’s own Cricket Team, ice creams and popcorn, as well as the ‘Pimm’s Tent’ and a ‘Gin Tent’. The much-loved Tea Room, next to the church, will be serving sumptuous cakes and pastries, along with a selection of hot drinks throughout the day. The Crown Inn will be hosting a pop-up bar on the village green with a fine selection of local beers, cider and prosecco. For the first time during the Fayre, it will be introducing an “Aunt Sally Challenge”, giving experts players and novices the chance to have a go at this quintessential Oxfordshire pub game. The ‘Sydenham Car Show’ will be adding some new gems to its collection of vintage and envyinducing automobiles and back by popular demand is the much-anticipated Sydenham Dog Show with a variety of classes to suit most canine competitors. Be sure to bring along your pampered pooches to compete for the coveted titles of ‘Best Fancy Dress’ and ‘Sydenham Supreme’. Dog Show classes commence from 1pm – registration starts at 12.30pm. The roads will be lined with stalls selling quality gifts and goodies from local producers, plus there’ll be the ever-popular Bottle Tombola, Coconut Shy, Plate Smash, Plant Sale, Bric-A-Brac and 2nd Hand Book Stall. Traditionally the event is rounded off by the hotly contested Tug-Of-War competition with teams from The Crown pub and The Inn at Emmington battling it out for the historic trophy at 3.30pm. The raffle will also be drawn, with a first prize of £100 for the winning ticket and the chance to win a dinner for two at either of the village’s excellent pubs. Whilst the road through the village will be closed for the day, extensive free parking is available on the edge of the village, which can be accessed from the B4445 (coming from Chinnor, turn left at The Inn at Emmington). Disabled parking will be available. As a community event, the success of the day relies so much on the enthusiasm of visitors from the neighbouring town and villages…so bring the family and help make Sydenham Fayre a highlight in the village’s calendar…we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone along for a fabulous day!

We will all have to watch this space... Headline acts this year include Tankus The Henge who will entertain the crowds on the Friday night with their funk filled repertoire of New Orleans inspired swing and heavy rock riffs. This selfproclaimed wild groove machine is currently breaking onto National Radio, so we really believe we have chosen one of the UK’s hardest working breakthrough bands. Our Music will extend to almost 1am on both nights and the main stage on Saturday will end with Guns or Roses, who will rock the Chilterns with their classic festival anthems! While again the festival will close at 2am on both nights. Beacon Festival continues to attract the best of local talent but this year we even have a touring band from New Zealand, Hypnumb, who are about to make waves in the UK, . As well as the music, there’s the real Ale, Cider and Cocktail Bars that will keep the liquid refreshments pouring while the eclectic international food selection caters for the humblest of pallets through to the adventurous foodie! There will also be a heavy vegan influence this year and the Health and Wellbeing zone is expanding to include more therapies, workshops and experiences. Little people can be kept amused for hours in the ‘Kidzone before heading to the main stage area to watch the lighting of the Beacon just as the sunsets across the hills, which really is stunning! Tickets can be purchased via the website - www.beaconfestival.net - for one day or the whole weekend with or without camping.
Or why not enter our COMPETITION to WIN A WEEKEND FAMILY TICKET to one of the best family music festivals in the Chilterns? All you have to do to enter is answer the following question;

The Benefits of CBD By Jemma Stevens of Flawsome Jem
Hello this month
I’m focusing on CBD (Cannabidiol) and it’s many benefits.
CBD is 1 of over 60 naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant and belongs to a class of ingredients called Cannabinoids. This plant has a rich history as a medicine going back thousands of years yet there is often a stigma attached to it. Having lived the benefits of CBD for some time now I would like to share my own knowledge and experiences to help you live the best healthy life you deserve. CBD is the major non-psychoactive component of cannabis – meaning you won’t get high from taking it. The human body has a system called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that receives and translates signals it receives from cannabinoids in the body. The body produces some cannabinoids on its own, which are called endocannabinoids. This system of receptors runs throughout our central nervous system, brain and many other organs and helps regulate functions such as sleep, immune-system responses and pain. It also plays a crucial role in regulating our physiology, mood, and everyday experience and assists a variety of physiological and cognitive processes including fertility, pregnancy, during pre-and postnatal development, appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory! And CBD fits into that system like a missing key as it influences these receptors. CBD Oil is becoming increasingly popular due its wide scope of mental & physical health benefits. If you suffer with depression, insomnia, anxiety, skin problems or hair loss (to name but a few) then this potent, extremely effective oil could help you have a better quality of life. There’s so many products available now providing different ways for one to enjoy and benefit from CBD. To read this article in full please visit the Look Local Magazine website. If you would like further information about the CBD products available to you and their benefits please DM me on Instagram or Facebook: @Flawsomejem or email: jem@flawsomejem.com

NUTRITION is at the centre of GOOD HEALTH The key and at the centre of good health is Nutrition. Food with its abundance of nutrients and components are our bodies fuel, enabling us to carry out everyday activities and achievements, as well as many great and incredible feats and endurance. In this article, Peter Dewdney, Nutritional Therapist, at Thame Therapy Clinic, explains how the absence, deficiencies and excesses of foods can restrict, reduce and ultimately cause our bodies to under perform, fail and be unable to achieve incredible things.
A
diet which can deliver the right balance of foods and nutrient content, has the ability to act as our ultimate prevention of illness and disease. Prevention being better than cure is a basic principle we all understand, but also brings with it a further benefit of the reduced reliance and dependence upon conventional pharmaceutical intervention and medication. In many cases by making only minimal alterations to diet and lifestyle, a great many conditions can be remedied, supported and improved. Digestion, muscular aches and pains, reoccurring illness, allergies and low energy levels are only a few conditions which could be supported using nutrition, diet and natural medicine. Our busy, hectic and stressful lifestyles as well as environmental factors, also contribute towards increases in our body’s requirements of nutrients and fluids. A personalised dietary plan offers the opportunity to maximise good and new foods in the diet and reduce or remove foods which act against the body’s best interests. I offer a Free 10 to 15 minute “Introduction to Nutrition” Appointment, which are held every third Tuesday of each month, giving you the opportunity to find out whether your symptoms and/ or condition, could benefit from nutritional therapy and support. In addition, I offer two detailed appointments covering in more depth, symptoms and medical conditions and dietary analysis. Details of exactly what is included within these two appointments are shown on my website, www.peterdewdney.co.uk. My approach is always specifically tailored to the individual, taking into consideration their lifestyles, likes and dislikes, and their objectives. I like to listen to my clients and together seek out the best and right ways to achieve there aims and goals. For more information on how nutrition and nutritional therapy could potentially be of great benefit to you, contact Peter Dewdney at Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844 215555 or visit www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

CASE STUDY: Chronic Back Pain and how to Speed up your recovery... Last month I reported on the recent NICE guidelines for treatment protocols that your GP will be following. In brief: No scans, no injections, no high dose pain medication, no traction, no corsets, no acupuncture, no surgery (NB Red Flag situations will be treated according to symptom/presentation, this is an entirely different scenario) The majority of patients are told’ You will get better’ The official NHS advice to these patients with both acute and chronic (long-term) pain revolves around exercise, increasing activity levels, returning to work, weight loss (where applicable) and reducing stress. This can be immensely difficult for patients who have chronic pain with a limited range of movement. Work is problematic, stress increases and exercise proves impossible. As such, physical and mental health deteriorates and so the cycle continues. This month I would like to share with you a case study, which tells of the improvements made by a client over the last 2 years.
CASE STUDY: Ms X.
Ms X needed to use a stick for support. She presented with classic ‘leaning to one side and forward’ back pain posture and dragged a leg. I treated Ms X regularly for 3 months using all the Bowen / NST skills to take her body out of this hideous imbalance. There were no Red Flags and I was confident that we would make changes over a period of time. Commitment was needed and acceptance of advice i.e. adequate hydration, the use of magnesium spray, exercise plans etc. Week 2: Ms X said she could get in and out of the car with more ease. Week 3: Household chores accomplished including floor laying. Her neck and shoulders were less tense and she was able to decrease her meds. The following weeks saw variable pain levels, leg numbness and posture changing; with an increase in symptoms often due to an increase in activity levels - which we agreed was an indication of progress and indeed manageable. The following months saw a sustained improvement, without a doubt regular treatments have been necessary for Ms X to fully resume her active and demanding outdoor work schedule. There have been times whereby Ms X required ‘emergency’ treatment usually following a heavy lifting incident! To date Ms X has a manageable lifestyle and is working to full capacity. Pain medication has reduced significantly, her blood pressure is stable, and the scar from the back surgery has all but disappeared - no longer red, angry and sensitive. Oh and problematic hot flushes are no longer!
Bowen /NST therapy treats the whole person not just the presenting painful areas. If this story resonates with you and you would like further information about Bowen Therapy, please contact me: Jen Webster Bowen | Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
Ms X came to see me in 2017. Her past medical history included spinal surgery in 2008. Prior to her first appointment, she had an MRI scan and facet joint & nerve root injections. She attended pain clinics, had spinal cord stimulation treatments and was taking daily doses of Morphine along with other prescribed pain medication. Not surprisingly her blood pressure was high and of concern to the GP. Nothing was helping the agonising pain, leg weakness, pain in her neck and shoulders and the inability to lead a ‘normal’ life. i.e getting dressed, driving, working (her work is physically demanding), so stress and depression prevailed. The drugs were causing nausea and mood swings.

This month, I’ll be focusing on the scientific evidence for meditation helping our minds and bodies. A prescription of ‘meditation over medication’ is increasingly being used by GPs in dealing with stress, and there are good reasons why. EEG tests measure brain waves which change frequency depending on whether we are active and alert, resting and alert, deeply relaxing or sleeping. Whereas non-meditators tend to display mainly actively alert (beta) waves, people who meditate show higher levels of resting and alert (alpha) waves. And the difference is lasting.
We are registered with Social Services and provide reasonably priced tailored care services from 7:00am to 9:00pm daily, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
A permanent beta-wave mode amounts to ‘fight or flight’ or stress. Chronic stress raises cortisol, a powerful steroid, which has a number of toxic effects on the body as well as the mind. It affects the heart and circulation, breathing, digestion, blood sugar, detoxification, hormones, bones and muscles, sleep, and the ageing of cells.
We can provide you with useful information to help you put a Care Service in place for a family member if you need advice or support just contact us for a chat.
This is also relevant for women going through menopause. Western women are thought to have a harder menopause than women in other cultures because of stress. A loop is created where stress exacerbates menopause which further exacerbates stress. Meditation helps to alleviate symptoms by creating calm and helping to break this loop.
We work in and around Chalgrove, the Milton’s Watlington, Chinnor, Thame and surrounding villages. We provide a valuable service to younger adults with learning difficulties/mental health support or older people with physical/mental disabilities. We have a wealth of experience provide support services for young and old to live a happy and productive life. For more information on the services we provide, please contact Julia:

Brain scans taken with fMRI show that people who meditate regularly actually alter the physical structures of their brains (a phenomenon known as neuroplasticity). Blood flow in areas governing personality and social behaviour is improved, while the amygdala, which stores traumatic memories, is found to be smaller. This has implications not only for stress, but also for clinical anxiety and depression. By focusing on the breath and becoming aware of what goes on in the body and mind, we can start to switch off the mental chatter and make space for experiences that are meaningful. Over time, we reset our system to switch appropriately between focused and rest states. Physical pain is also improved as we learn to distinguish between pain that is real and pain that is elevated by emotions. ‘LIKE’ and message Linden Tree Meditation on Facebook for further information about menopause meditation, beginners’ courses, workshops and outdoor events.

COULD YOUR SAGGING JAWLINE BE A THING OF THE PAST? If you’re one of the many people who stands in front of a mirror and pushes your skin upwards to reveal the taught jawline you used to have then High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) may be the answer you’ve been looking for!
A
long with lines and wrinkles, sagging skin is one of the most common age-related cosmetic concerns among both men and women. There are many reasons why skin starts to sag but the aging process and sun exposure contributes the most. Sagging skin can be particularly challenging to treat using topical and injectable products alone. Fortunately, advances in aesthetic procedures now mean there are professional skin-tightening treatment options that don’t require a surgical procedure to help you achieve a smoother, tighter and more youthful look. HIFU stands for high intensity focused ultrasound and is an innovative, painless and non-surgical way to tighten skin, build collagen and smooth wrinkles. Highly concentrated ultrasound waves penetrate deep into the skin and stimulate collagen and elastin production. 20% of the result can be seen immediately after the treatment. With the final result visible 3-6 months later.
Sounds too good to be true… Is there any Science behind it? Ultrasound has been used in the medical field since the 1950’s and was developed into an aesthetic treatment known as Ultherapy which was first used in 2008. Clinical study results are promising, a 2017 study involving 32 people showed that HIFU significantly improved skin elasticity. In a larger study of 93 people, over 66 percent of those treated perceived an improvement in the appearance of their face and neck after 90 days.
How does it work? Highly focused ultrasound stimulates fibroblasts in the treated area which stimulates collagen production and tightens the structures thereby helping sagging skin to tighten itself and become firmer. This method requires no creams, no artificial filler products or toxins. It relies solely on the body’s natural regenerative process. The treatment targets deeper layers meaning that the surface of the skin is not affected. After the treatment, you can simply go about your usual activities.
Before
After
What about side effects? As with all aesthetic treatments you may experience side effects. These can include a heat rash or numbness in the treated area. Effects are temporary and if occur usually resolve within 24/48 hours.
Does HIFU just treat a sagging jawline? No, HIFU can be used to tighten décolletage, lift the cheeks, eyebrows and eyelids as well as tighten skin on the neck (sometimes called “turkey neck”).
** SPECIAL OFFER** Free Hydrafacial (worth £120) with every HIFU treatment* Quote code LL195 when booking.
*Treatments must be booked and started by 31st May 2019.
HIFU results last between 12-18 months with most clients only requiring one treatment. Treatments cost from £595.00. For further information: Call: 01844 698441 | Book online at: www.eraclinics.co.uk | Visit us: 98A High St, Thame OX9 3EH
