Stoke Road Traders
Stoke Road welcomes you...
If you take a walk out of Gosport town, past Morrisons and Walpole Park you come to the traditional shopping street that is Stoke Road offering a treasure trove of niche businesses, many of which are independently owned.
S
toke Road doesn’t offer a modern retail shopping complex, what it does provide is a classic shopping experience on a road, steeped in history, through which you can still drive and park your car on the road, right outside the shops. If parking spaces on the road are occupied there are short stay car parks (most of which are free) at various locations along the street allowing you the time you need to explore the plethora of shops and services at your leisure. Over the next few pages of our magazine are just a small selection of the unique, and somewhat quirky, businesses that make up part of Gosport’s principle
shopping area giving to a flavour of what to expect. When looking at the shops, Stoke Road has art, crafts and hobbies, bicycles, leather goods, butchers, fishmongers, luggage, furniture, shopping trolleys, sports equipment, home appliances, prom gowns, bridal wear, flowers, beds, carpets, soft furnishings, luxury handmade soaps, bath treats, cupcakery, craft shops offering unusual and ‘one-off’ gifts. Opposite Waitrose is a tearoom for tea, cakes, breakfast, lunch, coffee. There’s Thai, Indian and Italian restaurants and even a store selling everything you need for your own Thai & Oriental cooking. Now, on to the services, there’s picture framing, bespoke tailoring, nail bars, footwear repair and clothing alterations, costume hire, leather repairs, canine beauticians, dry cleaning, bike repairs, television repairs, solicitors, barbers, chiropodists, tattooists to name but a few. So next time you are heading out why not head down Stoke Road, you might just pick up a hidden gem.

Gosports Golden Mile Returns...
Gosport’s Golden Mile is about to enjoy its third year and will take place on Sunday 31st May on Stokes Bay.
The brain child of Harry Carter of Absolute Running
(who for a while harboured Commonwealth Games hopes in the track equivalent until injury stopped play), The Golden Mile brings an opportunity for local residents to enjoy something different. Due to the very generous prize money donated by race sponsors Bayside Cabin, the inaugural race in 2013 saw Kenyan athletes rubbing shoulders with club runners and complete beginners. It became instantly apparent that the community wanted an event such as this to involve the whole family and the second year saw the Juniors given their own race with some very impressive times being recorded and Cams school taking a hefty £300 cash as prize for winning the Absolute Running InterSchool Challenge Cup. Adidas also sponsored the event along with a host of local businesses who bought into the community feel. Nick Carter, Founder of Absolute Running, comments “As we approach our third year, we as hosts are absolutely thrilled that local family car dealership Hendy Ford have joined us as a main sponsor which we hope will encourage elite athletes to challenge our current course record of 4 mins & 16 seconds held by Tom Payn of the RunFast camp since the inaugural race. There is even a £500 bonus on offer should the magical 4 minute mile be broke.” Nick continues ‘each year the event grows and this year is no different as we hope to bring the first ever Wheelchair Golden Mile to the South coast and more importantly, our town’. Paralympian David Weir has offered to bring his racing
academy team to compete along Stokes Bay Road (if permission to close the road is given) and this should provide a real spectacle and inspiration to aspiring disabled athletes. Nick says ‘anyone can enter. It’s meant to be fun and with chip timing, you’ll get an official time for posterity.’ Bayside Cabin will be race HQ and entries can be made online via www.nice-work.org.uk or at Absolute Running on Stoke Road. If you don’t fancy running but want to be part of your local event, Nick & Harry are always on the lookout for volunteer marshalls, the only stipulation being an ability to smile. Nick concludes ‘Gosport races have always been famous for the friendliness of their Marshalls and we hope that everyone has a great day.’ By Nick Carter. Love the
Affinity t
eam!
Spring is here! We need to cast our eyes downwards and check out those feet! For months they have been cocooned in socks and shoes forgotten and unloved, so now is the time to kick off those shoes and start getting them summer perfect! First ‘step’ is a pedicure, after a relaxing soak, all the dry skin will be buffed and exfoliated away, nails clipped, cuticles tidied and moisturiser lavished. If you have a problem with hard skin, then a ‘callus peel’ treatment is a must, this intensive treatment dissolves hard skin from feet in minutes to leave them soft and smooth*. This can be combined with a pedicure or used on its own. No need for polish yet unless it’s warm enough to expose those ‘tootsies’, polish colour trends for this spring/summer are pastel nudes or bold brights. For a longer lasting polish with a great shine look for a Gel polish such as Shellac which is instantly dries and lasts up to 2 weeks, sometimes longer on feet. At Affinity we offer an Express Pedicure perfect as an in between treatment, the standard pedicure as described above or you can indulge in a Deluxe which includes 2 exfoliation’s and a warming Paraffin Wax treatment, great for achy feet. *sometimes more than one treatment is required.

Get the “air-brushed” look
look for summer As the weather has started getting warmer and everyone is looking around the corner to summer our minds are drawn to thoughts of “beach” and “bikini/swimsuit”. We can easily fool ourselves in clothes but once the bod is out in the bikini there is nowhere to hide! You can self-tan all you like but you can’t fast-tone the muscles underneath.
S
o, how do I get into good ‘shape’? Shape is all about what’s under the skin. I often compare it with a mattress. If the filling of the mattress is reduced the surface will look saggy and wrinkled. If I increase the filling the surface will look nice and taut with the tight plumpness underneath. This is the same comparison between flaccid, un-toned muscles and tight, toned muscle. Also if there are a few uncoiled springs and lumps the surface will look lumpy and bumpy. This is
like stored body fat under the skin – uneven and bumpy. It’s similar to the difference between ordinary skin and ‘air-brushed’ skin. So, the best way to look good in just your skin is to tone all your muscles and burn stored body fat away! And the quickest way to do that, Ladies, is with the Curves 30-min workout 3-5 times a week. 30 seconds of strength training is the best way to burn stored body fat and avoid wasted time on working exhausted muscle. Hydraulic resistance machines will tone muscles more efficiently than any other type of resistance because it’s twice as fast working symmetrically on 2 opposing muscle groups on one machine. It’s a circuit so you can’t cheat and avoid the machines you don’t like – no muscle is left un-toned! And the simultaneous cardio training achieved during the workout will burn more calories and body fat in 30 minutes than any other workout. So what are you waiting for? Get fit, lose weight and get ready for summer by joining Curves and giving your body the treatment it deserves… don’t look ‘good’ …look ‘great’ this summer. Care Costs...
The thought of going into a residential or a nursing home can seem a daunting prospect. It can be a time of great concern for all involved, not least of all because of the cost involved. This month Donnelly & Elliott’s Ben Holden, a solicitor and a specialist in elderly client matters answers your questions concerning care home fees. Is there a cap on the cost of care?
Yes. Under the Care Act 2014, the amount you will have to pay towards care will be limited to £72,000. This cap comes into force on 1st April 2016 and only covers the care element of care home fees. When you go into care the fee you pay broadly covers 3 elements, Care, Board & Lodgings and Sundries.
The latter two elements often make up the vast majority of the fee. Many professionals and experts believe that most people will not come close to reaching the cap.
I am a home owner, will I have pay for care?
Sadly for most people the answer is yes. Under the current regime your local authority will assess your eligibility for state assistance and if you are worth more than £23,250 you will have to pay the full cost of your care. However there are some exceptions, for example if you have a spouse or partner who lives in the family home it is not included in the local authority’s assessment. On that basis you will only be assessed on your savings and investments. Please note the exemption only applies so long as that person is in occupation of the property.
If I give my home to my children will this avoid care home fees?
No. Your local authority has wide ranging powers to tackle avoidance measures including recovery of assets from beneficiaries. By transferring the property to your children a local authority could force your children to pay the cost of your care. It may also affect any benefits that your children receive and leave them liable to Capital Gains Tax on a future sale of the property. The gift could be ineffective in taking that share of the property out of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes.
I am not a home owner, will I have to pay for care?
Under the current rules the same regime applies. If you have more than £23,250 saved you will have to pay for care. If you have less than this amount but have more than £14,250 you will have to pay part of your fees. If you have less than £14,250 then your savings and investments will be safe but your pensions could still be used to pay fees.
I have heard the thresholds will change, is this true?
Yes. The new rules come into force on 1st April 2016 and the thresholds that apply largely depend on whether you own a property. In all cases the lower threshold will be raised from £14,250 to £17,000. For those that do not own a property (or own a property but it is exempt e.g. because their spouse lives in that property) the higher threshold will be raised to £27,000. For home owners, Please mention Look Local Magazine when responding to adverts.
www.gosportsolicitors.co.uk
however, the higher threshold will be raised to £118,000.
Are there any alternatives to selling my home?
In the absence of your fees being covered by pensions, savings and investments, you may consider a Deferred Payment Agreement (DPA). These agreements allow you to borrow money from your local authority to fund care. In return the local authority will secure a loan against your home (a bit like a mortgage). The repayment of the loan is called in once the property is sold or once you die. Under the new Care Act DPAs are going to be made widely available by all local authorities.
I am unlikely to go into care now, are there any steps that I should take?
If you co-own your home with a spouse or partner a professionally drawn Will can (in some cases) prevent up to one half of the property being taken account when one of you dies. This often involves a Will Trust which is not suitable for every client. A Lasting Power of Attorney is also essential and allows your loved ones to manage your affairs (such as your banking) if you are no longer able to do this yourself e.g. through ill health. A meeting with a qualified Solicitor who can tailor advice to your circumstances is also a must.

Battle the
with a
12 minute Fat Burning workout!
By Kelly Fielding, Personal Trainer, Bodyblast Bootcamp. www.bodyblastbootcamp.co.uk
A High Intensity Workout that will help kick start that beach body ready for summer
A
s the sun starts to shine we start to worry about getting that beach body ready, so I wanted to help you along with a 12 minute workout that you can perform anywhere in or outdoors with no equipment. Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises. The idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved, or at least the major muscle groups. This type of Interval Training is the single most effective way to burn FAT it’s also the most intense by far, and surprisingly it’s the shortest in duration, it only lasts for four minutes per exercise... but those four minutes produce remarkable effects. Below are 3 simple exercises that need to be performed for 20 seconds on and 10 seconds rest x8 rounds. Once you have completed all 8 rounds on exercise one repeat the same onto exercise two and so on.
Burpees 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Stand with your feet hip width apart and your arms down by your side. Lower into a squat position with your hands flat on the floor in front of you. Kick your legs backwards into a press up position. Hold. Bring the knees back to the elbows in a Squat Thrust position. Jump up and raise both hands over your head.
Push Press Ups 1.
2. 3.
Get into a plank position with hands planted directly under the shoulders (slightly wider than shoulder width apart). Ground the toes into the floor to stabilize the bottom half of the body. Begin to lower the body onto the floor, then release the hands and feet away from the floor. Push back up into a full press up position and repeat as you can.
Squat Jumps 1. 2.
3. 4.
16
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Start by doing a regular squat, pushing your weight back into the heels and making sure your knees don’t go to far over your shoe laces. Then engage your core and jump up explosively pushing off the toes and landing back into the heels. When you land, lower your body back into the squat position. Land as quietly as possible, which requires control.

Treat your
feet! M
ost of us neglect our feet. They spend much of their lives covered up – out of sight and out of mind – and yet I for one love to give them the occasional pamper and am convinced they thank me for it! A pedicure, professionally done, is a therapeutic treatment for feet which can support chiropody if you have foot problems, can assist posture by helping you to walk more comfortably and can soothe and relax you whilst being done. Typically, a pedicure will begin with a soak of your feet in warm, scented water which will both cleanse and soften the skin. This is then
18
followed by an exfoliating rub to get rid of dead skin. Salts and minerals are used, but exfoliation may also be done with pumice, especially on the heels or ball of the foot. A massage of the feet with creams and aromatherapy oils follows, to refresh and soften the skin. You may also be treated to a massage of the lower leg. Finally, cuticles will be clipped and nails cut and shaped before nail polish is applied to send you away with pretty toes! Any style of polish can be applied, from a French pedicure with white tips to gel polish which gives a long-lasting glossy finish which dries instantly. With summer approaching, now is the time to get your feet ready for those open toe sandals! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

THEIR SENSES
By Mark Deyzel, Starfish Day Nursery.
(With special thanks to Emily Williams, Student Occupational Therapist, for extensive information on Sensory Play)
You may have heard the term ‘sensory play’, but what does this actually mean? Sensory Play very simply, relates to our five senses (touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste) and engaging with activities that expose us to sensory experiences. Within ‘special education’, sensory play has been a key feature for many years. However, sensory play is beneficial for all children, helping them to naturally develop many important skills. Some of the benefits of ensuring children have opportunities to engage in these activities include: • • • • • • • • • •
Increase listening and attention skills. Allow children to relax, learn how to be calm and lower stress levels. Further develop and understanding of senses. Develop coordination. Promote cognitive development. Encourage children to further explore their environment. Encourage creativity skills. Develop a sense of cause and effect. Develop personal social and emotional skills. Encourages children to learn by exploring, leading their own learning.
Here at Starfish Day Nursery, we provide children with opportunities to engage in sensory play throughout the day. In the rooms we have sensory resources available, with messy play continuously set out. We have a new sensory room, which encourages children to explore with colour, UV lights, flashing lights and an assortment of different resources. We are also in the process of developing our sensory garden, which includes vegetable growing, wind chimes, smelly flowers and will soon include a mud kitchen for the children! If you require any more advice, or want to pop in and see our resources, sensory room or sensory garden – please feel free to get in touch.

Hi, I’m Julie Whitehead and I have been a midwife for more than 20 years. I am also a registered lactation consultant as one of my many passions is supporting women with breast feeding their babies. I will be contributing regular articles to Look Local Magazine to support their readers throughout the journey of pregnancy and beyond. More about me can be found on my website www.youandyourbaby.co.uk
In this edition Julie offers some tips on how to help expectant mums cope with their impending labour. Read it, share it, and talk about it with the people closest to you and the professionals assisting you with labour and birth. Labour takes time One thing that really helps women have a normal birth is patience. Labour takes time as your body goes through its natural process so when your contractions start, try not to watch the clock. This is just the beginning so relax as much as possible. If you have planned a hospital birth, avoid going to the labour ward too soon because you may be sent home again. Stay at home as long as possible and try and keep occupied, in early labour especially. Stay active Changing position during labour and keeping active can really help you deal with your contractions and encourage your baby through the birth canal in the best position. Try swaying, rocking, or wriggling your hips, walking, and going up and downstairs. Use a birth ball or other means of support, like your birth partner/s or midwife that lets you relax but helps you remain upright and mobile. If you lie on the bed for an examination, ask for help to get off it again once the examination is over. Understand all your options Another useful tool for labour and birth is having a good understanding about what might happen and how you want to deal with it. Find out as much as you can about techniques to help you with your contractions, for instance: breathing, using water, massage, a TENS machine, complementary therapies or hypnotherapy (hypnobirthing), as well as other medical forms of pain relief and intervention. Ask for help or reassurance If you are finding it difficult to cope during labour or feel that you are losing control, ask your birth partner(s) or midwife for reassurance and support. It’s very normal for women to feel that they can’t cope at some point during labour (usually towards the end) so ask for help Trust your body Women’s bodies are designed to give birth and most
24
healthy women can do so without major medical intervention. Do what feels right for you during labour and try not to feel inhibited. You might want to eat or drink; you might want to make certain noises that help you though contractions. Try to ‘let go’ and allow your body to work with you and for you. Choose the right birth partner for you For some women, their partner is the best person to be with them during labour and birth, while others might choose a close female friend or relative. Whoever you choose, it’s important that you feel comfortable with them, that you find them calm and reassuring and that they are someone you can communicate openly with. Stay positive During labour, staying positive really does help not only mentally but physically. Feeling strong, happy and confident releases endorphins and a hormone called oxytocin that actually makes your uterus contract strongly and regularly. This in turn will help to relieve pain and also help you achieve a sense of well-being. You will produce more oxytocin if you try and avoid feeling afraid, anxious or embarrassed and if you remain upright and have privacy and support. Cuddle your baby close after birth Your baby will have strong instincts to bond and breastfeed straight after birth. Cuddling your baby on your chest skin-to-skin (without clothes, towels or blankets in the way) will help your baby stay warm and secure, begin to bond with you by gazing at your face and start to breastfeed successfully. Your baby may turn towards your nipple and open her mouth. You may like to help her find your nipple. If you have a caesarean, your midwife can still help you have skin-to-skin contact and breastfeed.

Family Matters b) Your messenger knows which part of the ‘library’ to look in For example: Jack, legal executive, tall, black hair.
Are you worried about memory loss..?
By Pam Gully, Charterhouse Counselling. www.charterhousecounselling.co.uk
Some of the people I meet and work with are in the senior age group and will occasionally comment that their memory for names, places and events is not as sharp as it was. The fear underpinning these feelings is that this is the beginning of dementia. So, it may be helpful if I relate here, the information that I give them.
When you were a school child, your memory
was the best it would ever be. Why? Because there was so much free space, for new information to be carefully filed. By the time we reach our fifties and beyond, our brains have been remembering masses of information for decades. Memory is analogue, not digital like google. We remember by associations. So, our memories are more like books in a library to which we dispatch a messenger. Imagine being your messenger, knowing you want an instant result, sifting through hundreds of books to find the very word you are looking for. Then during the search, you pile your anxiety on top, so that the messenger feels under pressure to deliver instant results – which it can seldom do. When you have given up consciously thinking ‘what is that name?’, the messenger stays in the library and, later, it usually finds the information and you become aware of it popping to the front of your mind. How to reduce this time lag? Quite a number of people try to jot down new names, but this works only if some other facts about the newly introduced person are added. This helps in two ways, a) When you see the word(s) as well as hear, retention is stronger.
The worry about dementia is mostly unfounded, if you are the only person who has noticed. A more typical presentation of dementia would be where the person forgets not just a name, but that they were speaking, as well as the subject they were talking about. If this occurs regularly, then family and friends will perceive this and may become concerned. If so, your GP would be in a position to check and advise. I can reassure you, therefore, that the common patterns of memory loss are either an overstuffed ‘library’ of facts, or that insufficient attention was given to the name out the outset, because the other reason for forgetting is stress. The busy brain is less efficient and it could be that the information was not taken in. It’s not in the library to retrieve, as your brain was doing so much else at the time. Since pressure makes memory less efficient, try not to criticise yourself. The messenger slows down and loses confidence if you call yourself ‘silly’ or ‘stupid’ – very much better to be kind to yourself and this will pay dividends in memory retrieval. A popular phrase is, ‘oh, I am sure it’ll come back to me.’ One of the ways that you can be pro-active in maintaining a healthy memory is, surprisingly, physical exercise. The reason this works is that the increase in oxygen intake, plus movement, activates nerve cells and produces an increase in brain activity. Even if you are someone who feels that it is a bit late now to get physically active, or that it is not your thing, I would say that exercise could be the best favour you do for yourself, but that by starting gently (speak to your GP first) you will build positivity of mind, of imagination and promote memory efficiency. What a great investment that will be in your present and future! Pam Gully is a NCS Accredited Counsellor. For more information about the services she offers and how she might be able to help you or your family see her advert on Page 5.

News & Events in our region... MARINE FESTIVAL - Saturday 13th June Gosport Marine Festival 2015, boasts not only it’s charity races, sea cadets offering free sailing lessons and historic ships, it also offers a food festival to satisfy many an appetite and provides entertainment continuing into the night. It is all happening in the Haslar Marina, next to Trinity’s at the Lightship on Saturday 13th June. Local organisations Gosport Sea Cadets and Lee-on-Solent Sailing Club will be providing qualified instructors and all the necessary safety equipment enabling visitors to take part in dinghy sailing, kayaking, rowing and stand-up paddleboarding. At least half of the spaces will be free and the festival asks for a small donation for others. If you’re in it for the race then you will want to watch The Gosport Peninsula Charity Pursuit, which will feature boats of 26 feet (or longer) taking part in a fun pursuit around the Solent. As well as points for on-water performance, teams can also boost their standing by the amount of money they raise for their chosen charity before the starting gun goes off. Gosport has a rich maritime history and the festival is thrilled to welcome some of the vessels that are part of the town’s story. Visit Medusa,
And I would walk 100 miles....
That’s what local men, Byron Penfold and
Paul Farmer will be chanting as they take on the mammoth challenge of trekking 96 miles across the Scottish Highlands in just 5 days, in a bid to raise funds for Prostate Cancer charity. Byron, an Air Conditioning Engineer from Gosport and Paul, an ex RAF Police Officer from Southampton, will set off on their expedition on Sunday 31st May. Starting at Milngavie they will walk nearly 100 miles across the varied terrains of the West Highland Way in the Scottish Highlands. Seaplane Tender (ST) 1502, built in 1942 and fitted out for air sea rescue duties and Steam Pinnace 199 is thought to be the last remaining naval steamboat, will also be attending. These magnificent vessels are all maintained by voluntary and charitable organisations. Entertainment will take place during the day and into the evening at Timespace. The Gosport Sea Cadets led by the Rose and Thistle Pipes and Drums will march through the town centre, arriving at Timespace at 10am. Throughout the day local performers will entertain visitors of the Festival and in the evening including a performance by the HMS Sultan Corps of Drums. The entertainment will draw to a close with a ceremonial Sunset performed by HMS Sultan’s Volunteer Band. Alongside the on water activities around 30 stalls will provide food for the visitors to the Gosport Marine Festival. All in all this should be a lovely day out right on your doorstep, for all generations. Visit www.gosportmarinefestival.org.uk for more details.

The trekking twosome will complete their adventure in Fort William where they will probably be found propping up the bar at the local pub for a well deserved beverage in celebration of their victory. RHS Chelsea Flower Show 19th—23rd May 2015
Established in 1913, on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in London, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show has become one of the most celebrated annual events in the world and the world’s greatest showcase for horticultural excellence, attracting visitors and exhibitors from across the globe.
S
ince its beginning, the show has gone from strength to strength. It has grown from 244 exhibitors in 1913 to over 500 today, including gardens, nurseries, floristry, educational displays and trade stands. Today the show attracts 165,000 visitors. Did You Know: The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is one of the ways that the RHS funds its charitable activities. These range from transforming communities to helping children benefit from growing plants and delivering scientific research that helps thousands of gardeners across the UK every day. Here are some things you might not know about the world’s most famous flower show; • • • •
•
The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is organised by the Royal Horticultural Society which was founded in 1804. The Show has been held on the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea since 1913. The first RHS Chelsea Flower Show was staged in a single large tent. The first RHS Chelsea Flower Show was officially called ‘The Great Spring Show’, however the name ‘The Chelsea Flower Show’ quickly caught on. There will be 15 show gardens at the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments.
There is so much to see at the Chelsea Flower show and it is more than just flowers. The sheer quantity and varieties of plants on display is breathtaking. Skilled designers
offer visions of the most beautiful gardens by turning their drawings into visual works of art, bringing alive all of your senses. Chelsea really is window-shopping at its finest. It’s like walking through a real-life version of the best garden design catalogue in the world. But if you visit on the last day you don’t have to restrict yourself to window shopping. At 4pm precisely a bell rings and the great Chelsea sell-off begins. The poor designers, after all their hard work, begin the mammoth task of dismantling their creations. The good news is that the public can buy them. It’s perfectly possible to end up owning a little piece of a prize winning garden. For more information on what you can do at this amazing show visit www.rhs.org. We would love to see pictures of your gardens please send them to: Gosport@looklocalmagazine.co.uk Alternatively post them on our Facebook Page www.facebook.com/looklocalgosport

ampshire otspots
When being asked this question, I was told I might struggle with an answer, so I thought to myself, how difficult is it really? Is it tougher than coming up with an answer to the meaning of life? Or a harder question than what your favourite five songs would be? Or maybe an impossible quandary as ‘will Portsmouth ever get promoted’?
Rick Jackson
Actually no, I found the question ‘Where is your favourite place in Hampshire’ to be really easy. The answer is simple; the place where I live, Gosport.
Yes I know this may surprise some readers as Hampshire is a vast county. Some of you might be asking yourselves, what about the New Forest? Watership Down? Highclere? Or even Fawley Oil Refinery? Nope, for me it’s good old unloved Gosport. It may not be the most obvious place that many people first think of as Hampshire’s best Hotspot, and that’s fine with me, I’ll keep it my little secret. You see if, like me, you love coastline, lakes, promenade walks, splash parks, sailing, naval history and independent restaurants then Gosport truly is an unsung gem of Hampshire. To be precise, I live in Alverstoke. Our house is just five minutes’ walk from the seafront and two minutes from ‘millionaires row’. Yes, houses in Alverstoke actually go for over a million! It’s clear to see, with plenty of land and commanding views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight, these houses must rival those in Sandbanks, Poole. Which brings me to my other reason for my love of Gosport - The Isle of Wight (and more importantly) the town I grew up in. Ryde. I can keep an eye on my home town from here you see! Being an islander, Gosport also appeals as it has an island mentality about it. There is also the added bonus of using the green Gosport Ferry to get across to Portsmouth for Gunwharf Quays and ferries to the island. It is a home from home for me. But Gosport really comes into its own in the summer. We have plenty of very sheltered lakes that lead out into Portsmouth Harbour. Ideal for kayaking or paddle boarding. Plus, there are plenty of events too and the council puts on shows like Gosport’s Big Day Out in the parks with live music into the evening. And this year, with the America’s Cup on our doorstep and the return of the P1 Powerboats event, we are set for a cracking summer of entertainment. The council here really do seem to go the extra mile to make our town feel special. Something I can say I’ve not experienced in other places I’ve lived. Gosport is the town I have chosen to start my family in too. My wife and I married at the stunning St Mary’s Church in Alverstoke and it’s also the church our son was christened in. And how many people can drive to work in a little over 15 minutes while taking in the views along Stokes Bay and Lee on Solent seafronts?
We will be bringing you another instalment of ‘Hampshire Hotspots’ in the next issue. Which presenter will it be next time... Please mention Look Local Magazine when responding to adverts.

Recipe
Irresistible Chocolate Tart
For the shortc rust pastry, you will need;
225g plain fl our 120g cold cube d butter 3 egg yolks 100g caster sugar
For the filling , you will need ;
450g dark chocolate 450g double cream 125g caster sugar 70g butter
For ingredient s for the white and method chocolate sauce and C hantilly crea m, visit our web site. This chocolate tart with raspberry Chantilly cream and white chocolate sauce might seem daunting, but once you break down the recipe you’ll see just how simple it is to knock together and impress dinner party guests (If you don’t feel up to making the pastry yourself, you can buy ready made, making the recipe even easier)! Method for the pastry: 1.
Put your flour and butter in a food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles bread crumbs (or rub the butter and flour between your hands in a large mixing bowl, handling as little as possible).
2.
Add the egg yolks and sugar and pulse again until the mix comes together (mix the yolks and sugar with a knife if you are using a bowl instead).
3.
Add a little splash of water if the mixture is too dry. Bring together into a ball and wrap in cling film. Chill for 20 minutes in the fridge.
4.
5.
Preheat the oven to 200c (fan) and grease a 22-25cm tart tin with a thin layer of butter. Take your pastry and roll out on a floured surface as thinly as possible. Line the tart tin, using a little ball of dough to push the pastry right into the grooves and corners. If the pastry tears, just use a little spare section and patch it up. Once lined, place some greaseproof paper in the tin and pour baking beans on top ready for blind baking (you could also use rice or dry pasta for this). Bake for 20
minutes then remove the baking beans and return the tin to the oven for another 5-8 minutes, until golden brown. Leave to cool.
Method for the filling: 1.
Finely chop the dark chocolate and butter and place in a jug. Put the cream and sugar in a pan and heat until it gently boils, stirring occasionally to ensure the sugar dissolves.
2.
Pour the hot cream mixture over the chocolate and slowly mix until smooth.
3.
Leave to cool and then pour the dark chocolate filling into the prepared pastry case, smoothing down if necessary.

Motoring Vehicle Review:
First Drive: All New Kia Sorento By Tim Barnes-Clay, weekly road test journalist for Confused.com.
If you want a family car with seven seats then look no further than the all-new Kia Sorento.
Once known for being a
budget brand, Kia has gone way beyond that and is competing with premium vehicles. That’s not spin – it’s fact. Just get behind the wheel of the Sorento and the vehicle speaks for itself. The third-generation model is better equipped, more refined, stylish and technologically advanced than before. It’s longer, lower and wider too, thanks to a revolutionised platform, while an extended wheelbase creates greater room in all three rows of seats. You’ll probably only be looking at this car if you have kids, so, as a father-of-three, I know safety will be at the forefront of your mind. Rest easy, because the Sorento has been awarded with a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. Safety technologies include Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning System, Around View Monitoring and Speed Limit Information. In the UK, the new Sorento range comprises six models at launch. All are powered by a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine, with either a six-

speed manual or automatic gearbox. All have permanent, intelligent all-wheel drive and trim levels are KX-1, KX-2, KX-3 and KX-4. I drove the mid range KX-2 and higher range KX-3 around the beautiful roads of Marbella in Spain. Both test cars came with the smoothchanging manual gearbox – and, to be honest, it was hard to tell the trim levels apart. That’s good though, because it shows how well Kia has started to deck out its motors. The Sorento has soft-touch surfaces throughout the cabin; however the elephanthide-look dash material is overdone. That said; the seats come in black leather, creating a classy appearance. The standard instrument cluster features clear white-on-black graphics which deliver all essential information at a glance, but in the KX-3 version this is replaced by a seven-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display which adds an even more premium look to the dashboard, and allows greater personalisation of the information provided. Legroom has been increased in all three rows of seating. The second-row seats slide forward, giving muchimproved access to the two seats in the rear, which now offer enough space to accommodate adults. Even
better, the transmission tunnel has been completely eliminated, resulting in a completely flat floor for your passengers’ feet. The boot is longer than before too, and loading up is a doddle because of the Sorento’s low, easy access sill. In conclusion, minutely detailed body, cabin and chassis engineering work has resulted in a large SUV which is not only more engaging to drive, but also more refined to travel in. And with a seven-year or 100,000-mile warranty, the Sorento will deliver peace of mind, which is priceless when it comes to family motoring. PRO’s & CON’s Spacious
