In the spotlight... All-New Volvo V90

MOTORING

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.

Volvo’s V90 is the successor to the well-liked Volvo V70, which has been the Scandinavian firm’s flagship estate for years. Then Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz really improved their estate cars and the competition got hotter.

N

ow the V90 has come along with its saloon sibling, the S90, to shake the game up some more. The car has similar chassis parts and engines to the big XC90, but the Swedish automaker is taking a different angle on things when it comes to estates, now. The V90 houses a fairly small four-pot diesel turbo power unit under its bonnet and there is also a petrol hybrid if you’re feeling ‘green’. Alas, the V90’s boot area isn’t as gigantic as the V70’s, but it is still a decent, square load area and it’s certainly big enough for a family of, say, five’s needs. The boot floor turns into an even larger level surface when the seats are folded, making it the perfect vehicle to transport stuff to the tip, or outsized items back from DIY furniture stores. But the V90 will win over hearts with its ride rather than its load capacity. The cabin is excellently refined and just so utterly comfortable to spend a long time in. To be fair, Volvo’s seats on all its models are top-notch – and the V90 simply builds on that. The car will take four adults, or two adults and three kids, for a cruise all day long without anyone feeling fatigued. The steering is weighted nicely and there’s very little body roll in corners. It’s good news for the Volvo V90 on motorways, too. It drives with composure and tracks attentively to its lane. At city speed, the ride stays graceful. The range is divided into two turbo-charged diesel units, named D4 and D5 - and the factory-fitted gearbox across the line-up is an eight-speed auto. If you want manual, you’ll be left wanting as there aren’t any plans to supply a ‘stick shift’ version. Then there’s the top of the tree T8, which is a plug-in hybrid. This will be available in 2017. There are two levels of trim: Momentum and Inscription, and both come with good levels of kit and Volvo’s safety system. This is able to detect pedestrians and even large animals in the road before you do. The V90/S90 models also come with Pilot Assist, which offers up a semiautonomous driving function. Volvo could well be offering

@carwriteups

us a glimpse of what things will be like in the automotive future here. Volvo has a legendary name for safety, and the V90 and S90’s cousin, the XC90, was awarded top marks in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests. Because the V90 and S90 are so strongly related to the big SUV, the only conclusion is that both new models will pass with flying colours when put through the same assessments. If you loved the V70, you’ll adore the new Volvo V90 estate. It’s everything the V70 was and is – but more. That is except for the boot – but it’s only ever so slightly smaller, and we don’t think that should be a deal-breaker.

PET CARE

during fireworks Small Pets

Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, ferrets and birds all need to be treated with special care when fireworks are being let off. These animals are easily frightened. Blue Cross advises that owners of such types of small animal should follow these precautions: • • •

Hutches/cages and enclosures should, if possible, be brought into a quiet room indoors, or into a garage or shed. Give your pet extra bedding to burrow into so it feels safe. If you cannot bring your pet’s hutch inside, you should turn its enclosure around so that it faces a wall or fence instead of the open garden.

Cover any aviaries or hutches with thick blankets or a duvet to block out the sight of the fireworks and deaden the sound of the bangs, but make sure there is enough ventilation.

Dogs and Cats •

Always keep dogs and cats inside when

• •

Animals have very acute hearing. Loud bangs and whistles may cause them actual pain in their ears. But by following these simple guidelines your pet need not suffer. Source: Blue Cross

fireworks are being let off.

Make sure your dog is walked earlier in the day before the fireworks start.

Close all windows and doors, and block off cat flaps to stop pets escaping and to keep noise to a minimum. Draw the curtains, and if the animals are used to the sounds of TV or radio, switch them on (but not too loudly) in order to block out some of the noise of the fireworks. Ensure dogs are wearing some form of easily readable identification (ID) – even in the house. They should have at least a collar and tag.

Let your pet pace around, whine, miaow and hide in a corner if they want to. Do not try to coax them out – it’s just trying to find safety, and should not be disturbed. Avoid leaving your pet alone during such potentially upsetting events. If you do have to leave the house, don’t get angry with your pet if you find they have been destructive or toileted after being left on its own. •

Never take your dog to a fireworks display. Even if they doesn’t bark or whimper at the noise, it doesn’t mean they are happy.

Coffee Break

The Man in the Picture

by Susan Hill

Susan Hill is best known as the author of Woman in Black and this short novel is in a similar vein. It certainly is short, at just 145 pages, and this makes it a perfect story to occupy a dark evening approaching Halloween.

Oliver is a Cambridge graduate who is returning to his old college to visit his old professor, Theo Parmitter. The professor is well into his eighties but still attracts the attention of his old students and the younger fellows at the university. There is just something about him. It is during this visit, sitting in the old man’s college rooms on a dark January night with a fire burning in the grate that Oliver hears a story that will irrevocably change his life. In addition to teaching at the university, Dr Parmitter spent his younger years as an art collector, travelling auction rooms buying known and unknown works. It is on one of these trips that he encounters a mysterious painting of a Venetian carnival, complete with gondoliers and revellers in costume and masks. As soon as he sees it he knows that he must have it. After winning the auction he is approached by a man who insists that he must have the painting and tells Theo to name his price. He turns down the offer and the painting enters his life forever. A chance photograph of the professor in a newspaper brings a mysterious old widow into the story. It is from the widow that Dr Parmitter learns the full horror of the painting: a painting with the power to trap and horrify you. For this is no ordinary painting and Theo will find himself drawn into the story told within it, as others have in the past. Who is the man in the picture and why is he screaming and pleading with the viewer? Like Woman in Black this story is told in the first-person as Oliver learns about the painting. The narrator switches during the novel to allow us to hear directly from the professor and the Countess. Using the story-within-a-story device, allows the narrative to unfold at a leisurely pace but one which still drives the reader on to learn more. The true horror is revealed at the end and it is guaranteed to leave you wanting more, with so many questions still unanswered. Review by Willow Coby

A

: I can remember approaching my parents and asking to learn to play the flute around the age of 5. My parents, who are not musical, were very surprised and told me quite clearly that first I had to learn to play the recorder and read music and then, maybe, I could have a flute. I can remember feeling really disappointed that I had to wait, but I was determined. I was 8 when I got my hands on a flute for the first time. I think I had seen an orchestra on the television and decided that it was rather cool to play an instrument where you couldn’t see what your fingers were doing (unlike clarinets, oboe etc.), and I always liked the mellow tones it produced. I can also say that James Galway had quite an input and impressed me with the long phrases he could sustain and the beautiful tone he created when he played.

A

: This would have been at junior school. I was the only flautist in the school and very proud of the fact. I remember performing in front of the school at a Harvest Assembly and I still have a press cutting of the event published in the local paper!

Q A

Q A

: Where have you been performing recently?

: How did your interest in music start?

: How did ‘Flute Fun’ come about?

: Flute Fun was created to represent the teaching practice I have built and to promote the health and educational benefits of learning an instrument. It is well documented that music is an effective tool for communication and can support a young person’s psychological, emotional, cognitive, physical, communicative and social needs. I am passionate about Music Therapy too and have worked as a volunteer to gain some experience in this field. I recognise how music enriches and supports our lives, whatever

: I love performing and chose to study a Performance Diploma (rather than Teaching Diploma) whilst at the Guildhall. A few years ago, I founded a flute quartet and we had a residency at the Hilton Hotel in Gatwick along with performing concerts at a more local level. Last year I was in the pit band for a musical called ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ – it was a fantastic venture and I hope to be involved with Penguin Musicals in the near future. With my educational commitments I haven’t had a lot of time for further performances but I am always looking for the right projects to get involved with. I still aspire to perform in the West End theatres in a pit band, but these jobs are hard to come by – but it’s good to remain ambitious and aspire to new ventures.

Q A

: How can you be contacted?

: I love hearing from anyone who has an interest in creating music, whether it’s for a community project, theatre production or individual tuition so please do get in touch. I have also entered many students for grade exams with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). I can offer music therapy style lessons along with recorder lessons for younger musicians.

NEWS in&our EVENTS region Row, row, row your boat.... across the Atlantic Sea! Inspirational Friends was created by Hannah Lawton, in memory of Eleanor Ellis, a fellow rower and inspirational friend to Hannah, who at the age of 23 lost her life to Cervical Cancer. Elle was first diagnosed in the summer of 2010; surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy ensued until, in March 2011 Elle was given “2 good months and then a swift decline”. When faced with death, Elle showed an extraordinary spirit and courage which inspired everyone around her. Despite the doctors estimate Elle lived for 15 months. She lived every day like it was her last. Eleanor, Elle to her friends, was an inspiration to all those who knew her. She was charismatic, adventurous and lived her life to the full, taking on every challenge that came her way. When it came to choosing the team name, Hannah threw literally hundreds of names around. She knew what she was trying to say and in the end it was obvious, it needed to be a simple name that spoke a thousand words… “In our lives we meet many people, but only a few will make a lasting impression in our minds and hearts. When life throws challenges at me, it is my friends who stand by my side. They believe in me, even when I have stopped believing in myself. Friends are priceless. They make me push myself, they make me live for the moment, and they make me take risks. But most of all…they inspire me. Time waits for no one. Without my friends, I would still be waiting.” (Hannah Lawton, 2013) In 2013, the first Inspirational Friends voyage across the Atlantic began...Following a year of preparation, training and sacrifice the 2013 Atlantic race began. Inspirational friends, the youngest female pair to ever attempt the crossing, began the 3000+ mile journey from La Gomera to Antigua. During their 96 days at sea, Inspirational Friends faced challenge after challenge. Not only were they faced with the mental and physical exertion of rowing the Atlantic, they also had to cope with auto-helm failure, compass failure, rudder failure, battery fire and a dangerous capsize. On the 96th day, they made the difficult decision, and called for assistance. Just 2 weeks from the finish line, their journey ended. Team Inspirational Friends learnt a lot from their 2013 voyage across the Atlantic, most of all the importance of perseverance and courage, especially when things get tough. “We set out to cross the Atlantic in memory of Eleanor Ellis, and cross the Atlantic we will.” Therefore, in December 2016, Inspirational Friends will be taking to their oars once more, raising money for some incredible charities and crossing that finish line. Since then Hannah has evolved Inspirational Friends, committing to do at least one big adventure a year with a friend and complementing it with various other small adventures and challenges. She has also taken part in various extreme adventure racing events, including a 4 day multi-discipline endurance race in Norway; trekked the Chemin de la Liberté, France, one of the toughest WW2 escape routes from Nazi-occupied France into Spain, in October 2016 she donned her trainers to do 3 marathons in 3 days along the coastal path in Cornwall and was joined by three of her friends and next year plans to cycling the Californian Coast. “The great thing with an adventure is anyone can go on one. No matter who you are or what shape or size you are. You just need to say yes.” (Hannah Lawton)

Thame High Street is one of Britain’s top three, with Chipping Norton and Hebden Bridge, in the small market towns category. This follows Thame’s success last year, when the town was one of ten in the country to gain a Rising Star award. To be crowned champion in its category this year, Thame needs your votes. RETAINED REFLEXES are they delaying your childs development

Nowadays more and more children are being labelled with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD’s), attention deficit disorders (ADD & ADHD), Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, sensory processing disorders etc. Meanwhile many struggle with non-specific difficulties such as classroom learning, movement control, social interactions, concentration and even emotional maturity. Many of these ‘labels’ have a medical reference, which some people find helpful, however the terms merely describe a set of symptoms. Jo Rodhouse, a Neuro Developmental Therapist at Thame Therapy Clinic sees these myriad of symptoms as an indication of ‘Developmental Delay’ and very often there is a simple explanation for these difficulties and that is the presence of ‘Retained Reflexes’. What signs of retained reflexes would I have seen as a parent?

It’s often evident at the early key stages of development when the child has deviated from the norm. We often see difficult or delayed birthing, feeding or latching issues, failure to crawl, delayed teething or speech, being easily startled, unusual sleep patterns, fussy eating, thumb suckers, toe-walkers, late in becoming ‘dry’ or bedwetting, hypersensitivity or hyperactivity. The most common feedback from parents is that these children are simply failing to thrive or ‘I could always tell something wasn’t quite right’ – after all there is no better expert than a parent! As an example, if you’ve ever tried touching a baby’s palm you’ll know that he or she will automatically grip your finger, this is the ‘Palmar’ reflex. Its presence enables the infant to learn the skills required to hold objects, key to its development and survival. The Palmar reflex should inhibit by 3 months post birth, if however it remains, then we see children presenting with difficulty writing and expressing thought. As fine motor skills can be affected, we often see an immature pencil grip, inappropriate pencil pressure, messy handwriting and, as a consequence, a poor

ability to process their thoughts and ideas and then write them down. Whilst copying words is easy, spelling is often difficult as is the ability to express thought and creativity in detail on to paper, even though these children often have a wonderful imagination. You may also see these children slump when performing any fine motor tasks, such as writing, making models, playing computer games or playing an instrument.

What happens in Neuro Development sessions?

A non-intrusive, drug free Neural Stimulation Programme is designed to stimulate and then inhibit the reflexes that are hindering development. During the initial one hour consultation a case history is taken and standard neurological tests are used to look for evidence of retained reflexes and assess the function of the central nervous system. If there is sufficient evidence that the reflexes have been retained, then a programme of either skin stimulation techniques or movement exercises is put in place. These are performed at home, normally twice daily and should take no longer than 5 minutes. Progress is then reviewed and the programme is updated on a 6 weekly basis. Change is often evident almost immediately.

Bowen Therapy Case Study: Back Pain reduced... I am delighted to report that my Clinic at The White House Beauty and Holistic Health Clinic continues to thrive with the addition of two lovely therapeutic fitness classes in our peaceful reception area. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome ~ Fit and Tonic with Sharon Ritchie and Yoga me Gently with Sandra Boucher. These classes are hugely beneficial to those wishing to continue with their health improvement and to support the changes in their levels of health and fitness that Bowen Therapy has allowed.

This leads me into sharing this month’s Case Study: lovely lady named Mary came to see me in August. She presented with Chronic Back “APain, which had been ‘on going’ for several months. The pain and restricted range of movement was limiting her life. She was unable to cope with driving for more than 10 minutes, day to day activities and socialising. She was also trying to cope with the recent loss of a very close family member. Like many of my clients, Mary had been to see her GP, and was referred for an MRI scan. The medics recommended ‘watchful waiting’ with a possibility of a nerve root block in the future.

I have since seen Mary on 5 occasions, with each session bringing new improvements both physically and mentally. On the occasion of our last session Mary breezed in, in comfortable gym kit, with the leaflets of Sharon and Sandra in her hand… “Am I ready for these classes?” She asked. The answer was “Yes” I consider this to be the wonderful culmination of successful Bowen Therapy sessions, with my client accepting this gentle hands on treatment, along with my advice and techniques on how to support her life style issues. I doubt she will need nerve root injections. Mary will continue to see me for occasional maintenance sessions.

Bowen Therapy, and the A message from Mary; ‘We’re in Cornwall! And I drove! We broke the advanced form known as journey overnight, but then travelled on down. I can’t believe it - I feel Neurostructural Integration almost normal. A little tweak but nothing to how it was. A huge thank Technique (NST) is an you - I shall come and see you next week for a session and reassurance. alternative medical system that I know that perhaps the problem was probably about to resolve, but I utilises gentle, clear - cut but believe that your treatment, encouragement and attitude made a huge powerful soft tissue activations difference. Just Thank you! And yes, I’m doing the exercises!” that aids the body in self healing mechanisms. It is an holistic technique, painless and safe to use in all people suffering from muscular and skeletal conditions. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

On our first consultation I noted Mary’s entire medical history and we talked about how limited her life was becoming; notably with the pain, lack of sociability, fatigue and with the loss of her sister and unresolved grief; and a recent fall.

01844 396057 (Thame) www.astonhearing.co.uk kate@astonhearing.co.uk 112 High St, Thame OX9 3DZ Aston Hearing has been providing quality private hearing care for nearly thirty years, and now we are proud to announce that Aston Hearing’s Director and long-standing audiologist, Duncan Collet-Fenson, has been named UK Audiologist of the Year 2016 and is now waiting to hear about the results of the European Audiologist of the Year, to be announced later this month.

The award is nationwide and each country winner goes through to the prestigious Europeanwide award. It recognises ‘outstanding care’ by a hearing care professional. The Audiologist of the Year title is awarded on the basis of commitment, exceptional knowledge and making a tangible difference to their patient’s lifestyle.

early causes permanent devastating hearing loss. With all the results she required, Nikki went to A&E and was given steroids, within the 48 hour window of opportunity. After a long two and a half weeks on the tapered steroid prescription, Nikki’s hearing recovered to the point it was prior to the initial drop.

Duncan was nominated for the award by Nikki, who has been coming to Aston Hearing for many years. Nikki was born with single-sided deafness but was able to manage without a hearing aid, relying on her good ear. In her late 30s Nikki experienced Sudden Hearing Loss, which reduced her remaining hearing to about 20% in her good ear. She then wore a hearing device on one side, which was looked after by Aston Hearing and helped her to make the most of her remaining hearing and live a fully active life, teaching and looking after her two children.

Nikki’s story is remarkable, and is just one example of how Duncan has been able to help many local people to maximise their hearing potential. Aston Hearing aims to provide high quality service, always putting clients first and recognising their individual needs. Aston Hearing believes in creating a partnership between clients and audiologists, who work together to improve hearing and communication.

Unfortunately, in April this year Nikki again experienced a drop in her hearing, reducing her hearing levels to complete hearing loss and leaving her with distressing tinnitus. Nikki was able to rush to Aston Hearing, where Duncan, who was working late on a Saturday evening, revealed an audiogram that showed Nikki’s hearing was dropping at an alarming rate. This is a condition known as Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss which if not caught and treated

Duncan Collet-Fenson commented, “We are very grateful for the opportunity to use this award to try and highlight the very real devastating affect Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSHL) can have on a person and their whole family. It is a condition that can affect any age at any time with no previous medical history – quick diagnosis is the best cause of action to halt the progression of the condition and can in some cases help to recover the hearing” For more information about the condition and the symptoms to watch out for call Kate directly on 01494 733840 or email Kate@astonhearing.co.uk

GET THE LOOK Tips to making a cosy fireplace By Rachel Blake, Coulon Stone Ltd

The cooler months evoke desires for hot chocolate, hearty

soups, long walks and roast dinners. Imagine! It’s getting to that time in the year, when we love to take a moment and sit in front of a cosy fire.

While a lit fire automatically adds warmth to a room, it is the little touches that make a fireplace become a focal point where people (and often pets!) want to gather. The addition of a natural stone fireplace and hearth, alongside other simple elements such as the type of furniture, plump cushions, snuggly blankets lead to this space truly becoming the heart of the home in Autumn and Winter months. Opting for stone is easy; with popular materials for fireplace surrounds such as Bath Stone, Portland Stone, York Stone, limestone, slate and marble, being naturally heat resistant and easily maintained. Suitable for every type of room, from traditional right the way through to modern and contemporary, the stone can be easily hewn to fit in perfectly. With many of these beautiful stones being easily carved and hand finished, enabling elegant shapes and cuts to be made to create a bespoke, beautiful tailored fireplace. In addition, the vast variety of colours and tones of natural stones means that with careful consideration and guidance the perfect one can be chosen. Which when used alongside the décor and furniture will draw people to this area and add to the sense of warmth created. There are also two other aspects that can really add to the environment. The first is the furniture; be it a cosy sofa to sink into or an upright reading chair and footstool, the combination with the fireplace is sure to make people naturally migrate here. The second is the perfect mantelpiece upon which you can place beautiful objects or sentimental pieces potentially complimented by a mirror or piece of art over the top. For inspiration visit our showroom (Stokenchurch) where we will happily work with you to drawup a design you will love as we truly believe that a fireplace is totally lost without the addition of a natural stone surround and hearth. It just wouldn’t be the same, would it?
