With winter well and truly here, your mind has probably turned to the home and creating a cosy haven to snuggle up and hibernate in over the next few months. And what spells ‘cosy’ more than a roaring log burner. For tips and inspiration on choosing the perfect style for your home, turn to page 13. Although this time of year brings many exciting celebrations it can also be a challenging season for some, with as many as one in six people suffering with a low mood in winter and a small number of these will suffer with the more serious Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD sufferers are less able to control their serotonin levels in the absence of sunlight and if serotonin levels drop too low, so will your mood. And with mental health issues on the rise it is particularly important to pay a close eye on your children as with all the social pressures of todays society so many young people suffer in silence. Off the back of Mental Health Awareness Day last month Thame Therapy Clinic have focused their article in this edition to the mental wellbeing of teenagers and young adults. Turn to page 23 to read. And until next month, enjoy reading...

GET THE LOOK TIPS FOR BUYING A WOOD BURNING STOVE... W
By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
ood burning or multi fuel stoves are an increasingly popular way of warming our homes. They don’t just make a home look completely cosy, they warm them very efficiently too. They come in all sorts of sizes, shapes, colours and designs to suit any room, in any home. For the ultimate winter hideaway, compliment with a natural stone hearth and fire surround. To help you on your fireplace journey, we’ve used our years of experience working with local stove and flue system installers to put together some tips. To get the most out of your fireplace, it’s important to get the right size for your space. If it’s too big, it will dominate the room and it could be too hot, but if it’s too small, it will be overloaded and could jeopardise the lifetime of the fireplace. When you go to a showroom or contact your local stove installer, go armed with information – the size and use of the room, the insulation in your home, how many windows are there, potential stove placement and the ceiling height. All good stove and flue systems installers will visit your home before any work is undertaken to work out what needs to be done to the chimney, whether you need an exterior fireproof wall, and whether any work needs to be carried out on the stove inset. Installation of a stove and flue system should be carried out by a HETAS registered engineer. Installation can take as little as two hours, or multiple visits depending on the complexity of the job. In most cases you’ll need a fire retardant material for the stove to sit on. Hard, natural stones like granite and slate are a popular choice as they are extremely durable, easy to look after and come in a variety of gorgeous colours and textures. The hearth will need to be fitted before the stove so it’s often best to have the stove installer and stonemason communicating with each other to ensure all is completed in the correct order. If you’d like some advice on trusted stove and flue system installers, speak to your stone mason as they are likely to know the best local ones, and visa versa. At Coulon Stone we’ve been creating bespoke, natural stone fireplaces for 25 years. Visit our showroom in Stokenchurch to look at samples and to talk through design ideas and specifications. Or call us on 01494 484333 or email us at info@coulonstone.com.

Sound of Music
e to our November Sound
elcom of Music feature. Here you will find W information on local musical events,
upcoming concerts and where to find the best music tuition in the area. Thame has a variety of fantastic opportunities for budding musicians who wish to join together with other likeminded people. From bands to choirs to bell ringing! We also host a huge variety of annual musical events. Thame Pop Choir - The Thame POP CHOIR had its fourth birthday on 24th April 2018! The Thame POP CHOIR promise……. - NO auditions! - NO music-reading involved! - Previous experience NOT necessary! Join in the fun and the pleasure of group singing at its best. The choir is open to all, aged 16 and above. Singing is fun, therapeutic too; good for your soul, reduces stress and lifts your spirits! TV programmes like ‘The Choir’ have highlighted the pleasure and enjoyment that can be gained from singing. Thame POP CHOIR is a not-for-profit community choir, singing for fun as well as performing in support of charitable or local community causes. The Repertoire is ‘pop’ in its broadest sense – the wide-ranging song choices include pop, rock, soul and ‘power’ ballads, as well as jazz standards, songs from shows and musicals, etc. New songs are introduced regularly, as well as ongoing rehearsals of existing pieces
16
for forthcoming performances. If you are interested in joining the choir please visit: www.thamepopchoir.com Chinnor Musical Theatre Group - This excellent local group started out almost 50 years ago as Chinnor Operatic Society, but then decided to change their name as they rarely perform any thing operatic! CMT also wanted to encourage younger people to their friendly bunch and didn’t want them to think that they were too ‘high brow’. Previously the group performed 3 excellent shows a year and they will strive to continue in that vein, although they like to think that they are more flexible now, but however many shows they put on, they will endeavour to provide a variety of shows so that all the members and audiences can enjoy them. The group will be rehearsing weekly from November 2018 in Chinnor Village Hall and would like to take their own blend of entertainment out into other villages at times. CMT have built up a considerable local following and they hope they can encourage more people to come and see what they are doing in the future. The group aim to present the best of amateur entertainment using everyone’s unique talents – each person has their own skills. To join as a performer they would like to see a short singing or dancing audition – just so they know where to put you.
Entertainment This is never as bad as it seems and they will always try to see the best in everyone. Auditions for a Main Show are for those who would like to be cast in a named role and will be carried out well in advance of the particular show – again, this is nervewracking, but in order to get the right person for each character, it is necessary. If you’re not cast, it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough, just that someone else is ‘right’ for the role. CMT would encourage everyone who is interested to give it a go as you might just be the one! Alternatively, if you want to share in the fun, but don’t want to go on the stage, there’s always plenty of work behind the scenes and everyone is important. Or if you just have a love of community theatre, but don’t want to participate on or off stage, they would like to encourage you to become a patron – putting on a show is an expensive business, so if you’d like to help, please contact the group via: www.chinnormusicaltheatre.org.uk Clockwork Music - This is a fantastic local group for babies and toddlers to enjoy a variety of music and related sensory activities. Clockwork Music offer independent music classes for babies, toddlers and pre-school children in Thame, Oxford, Abingdon, Headington and Kennington. Tock the Clock and Brown Bear are at the heart of every class and they feature in the groups core songs, these provide structure within the weekly classes. Children love to wind Tock and Clock and watch him choose the special song of the week! A few of the many attributes of Clockwork Music are: - Age specific curriculum written and delivered by qualified and experienced music teachers. - Four separate age groups are offered on a weekly basis. - A large variety of musical instruments are available to use during sessions. - Interactive and sensory props to engage babies and young children - Fun and interactive classes for both children and the adults to enjoy!

MOTORING
All-New Volkswagen Touareg 2018 Review
The Volkswagen Touareg gets easier on the eye with each generation, @carwriteups but what’s the SUV like to drive? Motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay, decided to find out by getting behind the wheel of the 2018 3.0 V6 TDI R-Line model.
T
he new Volkswagen Touareg is handsome. Of that, there is no doubt. But more than that, the giant German car outdoes its predecessor in every way.
set-up not only looks awesome, but it works brilliantly – with quick responses and lots of functionality.
The interior is so well-made it’s as though it’s been hewn out of rock – and there’s more kit than you can shake a stick at in the cabin. There’s also amble leg and headroom for the whole family. The lack of a sevenseater model could be seen as the VW’s Achilles’ heel, but if you need a spacious five-up SUV with a premium badge and a load of technology, the Touareg should still be on your list.
I mentioned cabin space earlier, and VW hasn’t let the side down on cargo capacity either. By eschewing the need for a third tier of chairs, the Touareg has one of the most substantial boots in the premium SUV segment.
The car’s been around since 2003, but this latest incarnation is entirely new, with the same platform as Bentley’s Bentayga and Audi’s Q7. This makes the car a refined and robust proposition, even though it’s not the most absorbing to drive. The SUV has masses of torque, making overtaking painless and motorway mile munching effortless. The all-new Touareg in this guise will do 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, and it’ll reach more than double the UK’s speed limit. Yep, 146mph is when it runs out of puff. There’s a rather clinical feeling about the driving experience, though. You feel somewhat detached from what the wheels are doing on the road, and this is down to the slightly anaesthetised steering. Then there’s the DSG transmission – it can feel a tad undecided at times. That said, none of this rains on the parade too much, especially when you realise how agile the car is. This is due to the VW’s four-wheel steering arrangement, and lack of body lean in corners. Even if you’re not bothered about the driving experience, you can’t help but be wowed by the cockpit and the infotainment system. The SUV houses a bunch of digital dials that VW has named the ‘Innovision Cockpit’. The dials sit next to a massive infotainment screen that is artfully divided behind the wheel. The dual-screen
20
Of course, if you’re after a familysized SUV, then it’s likely safety will be on your mind. Therefore, you’ll be pleased to read that the all-new Touareg has just been awarded the full five stars from Euro NCAP. The car’s wide-ranging safety package consists of an enhanced body structure, a seat, airbag and belt network, and state-ofthe-art assist systems.

Mental Health: For teenagers and young adults Staying mentally well and physically healthy can be a struggle for as all at times however for teenagers the adolescent years can be an incredibly confusing and challenging time. The pressures they face at school, from thier peers, social media combined with a mix of hormones can sometimes become overwhelming. This is where Acupuncture could help and Andy Roscoe, Acupuncturist at Thame Therapy Clinic, explains his view on why...
T
here is a lot of media interest currently around mental health problems, a lot of it focusing on the mental well-being of teenagers and young adults. I hear first hand accounts from worried parents about the pressures on their children at school particularly those in exam years. These then give way later to further worries about future directions and finding a job or somewhere to live. Some of these young people come in and see me for acupuncture. Along with the various expressions of lowness or anxiety there are usually three other basic health indicators, these being; • • •
Sleep problems Eating problems Lack of physical exercise
All of these indicators are important for mental health and staying physically well, and need to be addressed. Sometimes just addressing one of these
will start the ball rolling towards good health. But usually the feelings of depression get in the way of making good decisions and these people get de-motivated and can’t get out of their weak, stuck position. Acupuncture can be an essential catalyst here. It re-activates the mind-body connection and allows space and calmness to return, the pre-requisite for making good decisions. In this state of mind it is easier to commit to lifestyle changes, which will allow better sleep, eating and exercise. More importantly, acupuncture helps you feel good about yourself and restores the confidence needed to tackle difficult problems. Andy works at Thame Therapy Clinic Tuesday - Friday and offers Acupuncture sessions for under-18’s for £25.00.
For more information, Andy can be contacted at the clinic on 01844 215555 E: info@thametherapyclinic.co.uk | W: www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

Back Pain - Bowen / NST treatments are the way forward when your Doctor is unable to help...
STOP PRESS...
‘Useless jabs for back pain cost the NHS £40m a year’ and Back pain treatments are useless ( medical ) experts warn’ These are just two headlines in a national newspaper published in recent months! So what does this mean for the millions suffering from back pain?
The following are quotes from these articles: Qu.1: “Exercise and psychological therapy are the only things that work for most cases of chronic back pain’ Job satisfaction and a positive attitude are the strongest indicators of whether back pain will turn into a serious disability.”
In many cases surgery is still being offered as an option; and indeed this may be essential if symptoms are ‘red flagged’ i.e. for specific conditions or spinal injury but it should not be performed for back pain. However, and to quote, “ The average benefit to surgery is modest at best and there are serious harms”
So how will you proceed when the medics are unable to help? In my clinic not a week goes by without me seeing back pain clients. Some present acutely i.e. with a recent injury; many come and see me with a history of chronic pain; and many come to clinic on a regular basis having resolved their back pain issues for maintenance sessions. Back pain is inherently subjective and chronic pain tends to be difficult to treat. Whilst the majority of back pain is self-limiting, consideration is given to physical and psychological implications. Bowen / Neuro Structural Integration Therapy is a treatment of choice and has a well documented record of success for the treatment of back pain and sciatica. Please call me to discuss your concerns, for further information or to book an appointment Jen Webster Bowen, Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664
Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
Qu.2: “Back pain is Britain’s leading cause of disability with up to nine million estimated to suffer from it. Patients often demand a “quick fix” and are being given pointless drugs, surgery, injections and needless scans. A report in The Lancet said that back pain was routinely badly treated, with patients being given risky procedures and addictive painkillers. Guidelines from NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in 2016 - which readers will have noted that I reported on at that time - said guidelines are not being followed and therefore doctors may be slowing up recovery times”.

Remember Remember...... Your ears on the 5th November
#protectyourhearing Bonfire night is fast approaching and many of us will be looking forward to a fun night of fireworks with the family. Whether you are thinking of attending an organised event or just having a few fireworks in your garden, it is important to consider how you can protect your ears from lasting damage. Fireworks displays are great fun but are also very noisy events. In the U.K. the legal noise limit is 120dB for fireworks but this is 35dB above the level at which hearing damage can occur. The risk to your hearing depends on how long your ears are exposed to the loud noise, and at a level of 120dB it only takes 7 seconds to risk permanent damage. A common sign of damage to the ear is tinnitus which can be a ‘ringing or buzzing’ in the ear that won’t go away which can be very disturbing to live with. Another indication of hearing loss would be if you can no longer use a phone in one or other ear.
The best approach to avoid risks to your hearing is to wear some good earplugs. For young children ear defenders are recommended. You should also ensure you don’t stand too close to the fireworks, speaker systems, music amplifiers and other sources of loud noise. Keep your distance. If you find yourself close to a very loud noise source (120dB or above), without ear protection, plug your ears with your fingers immediately and move yourself away from the danger as quickly as possible. At Aston Hearing we believe in preventative measures and offer custom made earplugs which ensure the best possible fit for comfort and effectiveness. They still allow you to enjoy noisy events, background music and conversation whilst protecting your ears at the same time. We also provide a range of ear defenders and disposable ear plugs at our practices and can offer advice on the best approach.

Funeral Planning
For peace of mind and to help those you leave behind. W
hen making a Will it also makes sense to think about your funeral preferences. Understandably this is a sensitive subject and one that many of us don’t wish to think about, however by setting up a Funeral Plan you are not only guaranteeing that your wishes will be carried out after you’re gone but also eliminating the financial burden of those you leave behind. Many people put their funeral wishes in their Will, but quite often this isn’t read until after the funeral. Also, not everyone is aware that funeral preferences set out in a Will are not binding upon executors - they do not have to carry out your wishes. Money set aside for a funeral does not have to be spent on the funeral. Although your executors have a duty to carry out the funeral, they are not obliged to spend any money you may have saved for that purpose. Funeral expenses are the first debt upon your
estate, but settling your estate may take some time, and the funeral director will expect to be paid long before your executors are in a position to pay.
SO, WHAT DOES A PRE-PAID FUNERAL
PLAN GUARANTEE?
With funeral costs likely to rise in the future, a funeral plan, once purchased, guarantees that the funeral director’s costs will be met, however far into the future they may be required. A plan can be purchased by a once-only payment (the most popular option) or by monthly instalments over a fixed period. Once it’s paid for you need never have to worry about it again. For personal, experienced advice regarding Funeral Planning, Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney contact Michael Bradley on 01844 281013 or 07868 746406. * The plans comply with the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000.
