Goosebumps: Be careful what you wish for
by RL Stein
Keeping with the Halloween theme for the children
we have a classic Goosebumps book. Samantha is a bit of a klutz: she trips over, drops things, and despite being tall, can’t manage to shoot on the school’s basketball team. As if that weren’t enough she is picked on by the popular star of the basketball team, Judith. One day Samantha decides that she has had enough and a chance meeting with a strange little woman in the rain gives her the opportunity to get her revenge. Granted three wishes in return for helping the woman Samantha thinks she knows exactly what she wants to wish for. But, as the title says, she learns that you do indeed need to be careful what you wish for as the outcome may not be exactly what you imagined it to be. A great scary read for pre-teen readers this is another instalment of the successful Goosebumps series. The chapters are short with plenty of cliff hangers to keep you reading and a spooky ending that reveals revenge can never be sweet. Review by Willow Coby

GET THE LOOK Join the baking nation with natural stone in your kitchen! By Rachel Blake, Coulon Stone Ltd
W
ith the baking season upon us and many of us glued to the television on a Wednesday night, the delights and perils of baking are being avidly discussed and enjoyed everywhere. If you are feeling inspired and donning your apron, then there is no better addition to your kitchen space than natural stone. Feeling the love for marble? People who already work on marble worktops already know how fantastic marble is for working with pastry and chocolate. In fact, a chilled marble surface is ideal for keeping dough from sticking which means you don’t have to add too much extra flour, with bakers using it for thousands of years because of its naturally cool temperature. Perceptions may be that marble is more porous and slightly softer than granite so can scratch and stain, however with proper treatment much of these concerns are removed. Alternatively, if you love the look, but worry about damaging the surface there are a number of marble effect quartz options which are a popular, more durable alternative. The vast variety of colours and patterns from dark to light and everything in between realistically means there is likely to be something to suit whatever your preference or taste. Plus they are not always as expensive as you might think, which means there is a wide range available to suit budgets. With so much choice, it could feel daunting to make a choice however at Coulon Stone we pride ourselves on taking the time to listen to what your ideas are to make sure we can help guide you in your decision making process from the material chosen, right the way down to the type of edge you prefer. From this we will then visit your home to personally measure and template the worktop, assess any areas that will require special attention and provide you with a free, no obligation quote. Once you give us the go ahead we will cut the piece and hand finish it with a view to getting it installed within 7-10 days.

In the spotlight... Subaru WRX STi
MOTORING
Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
There’s nothing else on the road quite like Subaru’s WRX STi. The Japanese-made motor blends power with precision and rally-esque performance with daily practicality, putting it into a segment all of its own.
The key difference between Subaru and other marques
begins with the poise and control that comes from its permanent symmetrical all-wheel-drive and Boxer engine. However, unlike many performance-oriented motors, the Subaru WRX STi doesn’t just thrill while in motion. Its tailoring, both inside and out, is aimed at making auto aficionados dribble with pleasure. Big bumpers, chunky rear panels, a ridiculously massive rear spoiler and a low ride height give the Subaru WRX STi real kerbside clout. Inside the four-door car, the quality of materials is better than ever, and the two front occupants are guaranteed a confident and comfortable seating position, thanks to RECARO bucket seats. Two adult-sized passengers can easily fit into the rear seats, too. Behind the wheel, your feet fit easily onto the aluminium pedals and you immediately feel at one with the WRX STi. The broad, leather-swathed steering wheel gives you quick access to audio buttons and cruise control switches. This means you can give your full attention to the road ahead without removing your hands from the wheel. The only thing left is a quick stab of the push-button engine starter to fire the Subaru into life. Devotees of Subaru performance cars will adore the tune the car produces when it starts up; an exhaust system, with a large centre muffler and big diameter piping, boosts the engine’s legendary boxer ‘burble’. And at the nucleus of the Subaru WRX STi pulses the heart of a champ — the turbocharged 2.5-litre Boxer power unit. The lump thrusts the WRX STi from zero to 62mph in 5.2 seconds and the six-speed manual transmission lets you enjoy every arc of the radiant red rev counter. As you pair revs to obtain the most of the engine’s bountiful torque curve, you feel the 158 mph performance promise of the WRX STI firmly within your reach. But the entertainment isn’t all about being first away from the green light because, unlike most motors, with the WRX

STI you control the set-up. The Scooby features a factory setting of 41/59 percent front/rear torque distribution for best possible balance, and you can tweak this while on the move using the four-mode Driver’s Control Centre Differential system. The Subaru WRX STi also combines Multi-Mode VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) – Subaru’s very own version of electronic stability control (ESC), allowing you to vary the point at which this electronic driver aid intervenes. The Japanese motor manufacturer has further fine-tuned its three-mode SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) system, which can be used to fiddle with the engine’s traits to best suit an array of motoring conditions.

out more about our local musicians. In this issue we are going to focus This month we are going to focus on Paul Hankey, a fantastic local singer and guitarist.
Q: How did your interest in music start?
A
: There were always plenty of records in the home when I was a kid. I remember being bought 45s of This Old House by Shakin Stevens and The Best Years of Our Lives by Modern Romance. My Dad was a big influence on me - I found a stack of his old Beatles LPs in the bottom of a cupboard. I was hooked from that point on. Paul McCartney Pipes Of Peace was a favourite track I remember from my youth too. I remember listening to it on a Walkman - sharing a headphone each with a mate on Scout camp.
Q: Who influences you musically?
loft on old guitars with rusty strings and a 15W practice amp (sorry neighbours!). The Memphis Rattlesnakes were born...
Q
: Where have you been performing recently?

Q A
Q A
: Tricky. I have pretty broad music tastes. Norwegian Black Metal to Ennio Morricone, and everything in between. Anyone who has seen a Memphis Rattlesnakes show will grasp pretty quickly that I love rock n roll. So I guess Elvis, Eddie Cochrane, Chuck Berry etc. The Rattlesnakes most popular original “Bad Boys” is a Carl Perkins/Chuck Berry rip off. I also have a song, Americana Dream that kind of reminds me of Lynyrd Skynyrd. : Tell us about the first band you joined!
: ‘Tarot Woman’. I was 15 years old and we did a gig at school. Started the set with Thin Lizzy’s Jailbreak. I was lead guitarist, had long hair, flared jeans and an open shirt. I played a great Charvel guitar too. It was the most exhilarating experience of my life and a dream come true. I’ve been in bands ever since. Whiskey Train, Pork Chop Express, Safari, The Curves and now the Rattlesnakes.
Q A
: How did the Memphis Rattlesnakes come about?
: I reconnected with Ben, an old friend from Blackpool about 12 years ago. He’d returned from travelling round Oz and Thailand and was crashing on his brother’s sofa in High Wycombe. We met up for a drinking session in Thame and finished the night jamming 12 bar rock n roll in my
: We did the main stage at Thame’s Music In The Park (they’ve asked us back for next year’s event too!), played in the bar at the Beacon Festival, and finished the summer hols with a great set at the Towersey Festival. That was an important gig for us. Really felt we’d come of age. Next up is Chinnor RFC’s Oktoberfest and a PTA rock n roll night at Oakley School (8th and 15th October). We also like to do the local open mic nights: Friday At The Fish, Sunday afternoon in the Swan and the First Thursday Music Club. : Where have you been performing recently?

The right way to wash your hands (Yes…most of us are doing it wrong!)
As we head towards flu season, it’s more important than ever to wash our hands properly. The World Health Organisation now recommends the following six stage process using an alcoholic hand rub. Soap can be used where hands are visibly dirty. 1. 2. 3. 4.
First rub palm to palm together Next place the left palm over the back of the right hand and rub, then change over and repeat Now put your palms together, interlace your fingers and rub With your hands held horizontally, rub the backs of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlinked 5. Using a rotational movement rub your right thumb clasped in your left palm and vice versa 6. Finally use rotational rubbing backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of hand in left palm and vice versa. This technique has been championed by Glasgow Caledonian University who found it considerably more effective than the previously recommended method. They say that hand hygiene is the most important intervention in reducing healthcare associated infections. A study in 2012 may give you a further incentive to take the time to wash your hands correctly. It found that in some cases, the quantity of germs on people’s hands was equivalent to the amount found in a dirty toilet bowl! By Susan Brookes-Morris

Hearing Changes as we age...
We expect many physical changes as we age, but for many people, hearing loss is often less discussed and less readily accepted than other age-related issues. Hearing loss affects over half of people over the 60 to some degree. This is because as we age, the hair cells in the inner ear which help us to process sounds incur damage, and as they do not grow back this creates increasing hearing problems over time.

cupper If you watched the Olympic swimming this summer you may have seen a lot of swimmers with red circular marks on their shoulders and backs and wondered what they had been doing to themselves? The answer is Cupping!
The origin of these marks
is the ancient Chinese therapy of Cupping. It involves the use of glass suction cups on the skin and dates back more than 1500 years in China and also adopted soon after in eastern Europe. The cups are applied using heat or a hand pump to create a vacuum which allows the cup to suck onto the skin. Once in place the cups free up the movement of blood and fluids in the underlying muscles. The red marks appear because the skin is superficially bruised but in a non-harmful way. This
action
releases
aches and pains and so is an excellent non-invasive way for athletes with rigorous training programmes to keep flexible and strong.
It is also a good therapy for all aches and pains whether you are an athlete or not. If you have soreness and tightness in your back or shoulders or any joint then Cupping might be a good therapy for you, perhaps in combination with Acupuncture or Acupressure.
Drawing up the skin in a cup is believed to open up the skin pores which helps to stimulate: - The flow of blood - Balances and realigns the flow of QI - Breaks up obstructions - Creates and avenue for toxins to be drawn

Bowen Therapy Practice: Jen’s summer review... For me this summer has been full of challenges. You may have read in the September Look Local that The White House Beauty and Holistic Health Clinic has relocated to East Street, Thame. After months of uncertainty, and working in temporary accommodation, I am finally settled in the newly refurbished White House and am very pleased and proud to have my clinic up and running. I enjoyed sanding floors, helping with the painting, organising removals, decorating and shopping for fixtures and fittings. I will, however, not be swapping renovation work for my Bowen practice.
Throughout the upheaval of the Summer months Bowen Therapy •
Many clients book appointments at regular intervals to maintain a sense of wellbeing and to ensure they don’t ‘slip back’ to the original presenting issue. I see them every month or two. This is an MOT system which supports clients through work and lifestyle / sport obligations. Most commonly are those with back, neck, hip and shoulder restrictions. Those with headache, hormone and allergy concerns also have benefitted from regular sessions. All report treatments to be deeply relaxing and restorative, enabling them to function fully given their lifestyle choices.
•
I have been treating babies and children with Cerebral Palsy (and associated issues ), eczema, teething, disturbed sleep patterns and anxiety. All have respond well to Bowen, as reported by their parents
•
Teenagers have been treated for symptomatic relief of period pains, anxiety, nail biting, neck spasms and sports injuries.
•
I have seen an increase in treating clients who suffer foot conditions such as bunions, plantar fasciitis, and morton’s neuroma, conditions that are often diagnosed by the medics. These ailments can be deeply uncomfortable and have a knock on effect on the whole body, often resulting in pelvic, shoulder, neck and jaw imbalance.
•
I have treated a client with Bell’s Palsy and we believe the recovery was ‘speeded’ up due to Bowen treatments. I am currently seeing a lovely young lady with severe neck spasms and intermittent loss of voice control she reported last week “This is the first time I have ever relaxed during any form of treatment” I believe her confidence and ability to cope with her condition has grown over the last few weeks.
•
I have seen gardeners, farm workers, office workers, sports people, those seeking relief from hormone issues, a young mummy recovering from a traumatic birth and clients struggling with only their own aches, pains and work stress but also dealing with sick and ageing parents.
Many clients present with chronic conditions, issues that are longstanding and have not resolved despite medical intervention. The response to Bowen, is often dramatic and life changing. Everybody is different and everybody responds in a different way. Bowen is a hands on, gentle and effective therapy that will endeavour to address your pain and the issues you present with. It will assist you in achieving better balance and the level of health that you want. Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.
