A minimum of 20mm thickness is recommended for the hardest materials like slate and granite. For slightly softer stones, marble and limestone, we recommend 30mm. Hearths can be flush to the floor or built on an upstand. 5. Colours and design options?

Thame Art Crawl
Autumn Green Fayre
This year, as part of Thame Arts & Literature Festival (TAL), Thame will host its first ever ‘Art Crawl’, giving festival goers the chance to stroll around Thame between events and explore the different venues celebrating art in the town centre. Running from Wednesday 10th – Saturday 14th October, the Art Crawl includes the ‘Sparksartists’ event shown in the TAL brochure. It will also feature established galleries, artist and makers shops; pop up art exhibitions at 9 different venues; live art activities where you can watch an artist at work, and even get involved yourself; and a showcase of community arts groups, to inspire everyone to get creative. Thame has a wealth of artistic talent and this event hopes to be the first of many that celebrate this. Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth are holding their Autumn Green Fayre on Saturday 7th October at Thame Town Hall, 10:00am – 2:00pm, with lots to do, see and buy.
Thame Town Centre shops are also getting involved in TAL by dressing their windows to celebrate the festival. The theme this time is ‘Jane Austen’, to celebrate the bi-centenary of her death.
There will be local and Fair-Trade stalls selling a variety of gifts, crafts, jewelry, clothes, produce and cakes. Free children’s activities will be provided using recycled or natural materials, as well as a chance to make your own Autumn decoration. Come and enjoy an inexpensive lunch of homemade soup and a roll. Cakes and refreshments are also available. If you have any surplus produce that you have grown in your garden or allotment, you can donate it to Friends of the Earth at the Green Fayre, and it will be sold on to others for a small contribution, so avoiding waste and helping to support Friends of the Earth. Alternatively you can do a ‘produce’ swap. Entrance to the Green Fayre is free, with free lucky dip prizes for younger children.

: A
We started as a team of friends from Haddenham and Thame who all had worked in commercial radio with an idea of creating a pop up radio station for 2 weeks per year to celebrate the Haddenham Beer Festival. So ‘Summerfest Radio’ was born. We did it 4 years in a row with a lot of support from the community to go for a full time community radio licence and widen our reach to focus on Thame, Haddenham and the surrounding villages.

Well, it’s really quite stressful getting everything to work and a lot of equipment to install. We are lucky to have our studios in the Haddenham Garden Centre but it is created within an old portacabin which has been completely refurbished and refitted with cabling, internal walls and soundproofing alongside a lot of computer technology which allows us to put our programmes together. It took almost a year of planning and preparation.
are the main objectives of Q: What Red Kite Radio? A:
To provide a community service of Classic Hits from the 60’s to today with information and education, for Thame and the surrounding villages. We offer our VOICEBOX feature so local groups and organisations can make announcements about themselves or upcoming events. We also offer local societies, like the U3A, WI, Guides, Scouts, etc the chance to tell the listeners their story via our weekly TAKEOVER show. Local businesses too can benefit from advertising at much less costly rates than the national services provide. We bring the neighbourhood into the home.
: Tell us about your presenters?
A:
We have a number of local presenters. The team is a mix of young and old from all areas, with a vast repertoire of music knowledge and preferences. We’re always keen to build the team so anyone can come in and give it a go after completing our training. We train the presenters in the studio to operate the desk and control the playlist system. I came to broadcasting late in life but it’s always been an ambition of mine to get on the radio. Now, thanks to Red Kite Radio, I have achieved that goal.

We support and give air time to announcing local events and happenings. We promote local bands and groups and give them the opportunity to come in and be interviewed live as we do for local organisations like Thame Council, The Blue Cross, Chiltern Air Ambulance etc. As above, the VOICEBOX and TAKEOVER features give the community the chance to speak for themselves and reach a wider audience than local village newsletters and posters do. We repeat the announcements regularly so that they are heard whenever folk may be listening.

In the spotlight... Citroën C4 Cactus PureTech 110 Flair
MOTORING
The turbo-powered Citroen C4 Cactus may not be a sharp handler, @carwriteups but it’s bristling with character. That’s the opinion of our motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay. Read his review to find out more about the car.
If you like a bit of Gallic eccentricity, then the oddly
named Cactus could be the car you’ve been dreaming about. To some, it has a face only a mother could love. To others, it’s a work of art. I’ll let you decide on that one; after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. The Puretech 110 Flair variant, tested here, is undoubtedly the model to go for if, like me, you’ve been seduced by the down-to-earth charisma of the Cactus. But, should you be worried about the way the car drives? Not that much; well, not unless you’re expecting stacks of power. Even with 110ps, the French hatchback’s performance is only satisfactory – but it’s much better than its diesel sibling in terms of flexibility and response. Its five-gear manual transmission’s throw does feel rather longlegged, and the PureTech gasps under 15mph in second gear. Additionally, it feels like it might stall; however, it spins cleanly to produce a good turn of speed from 1500rpm onwards. This makes the petrol-powered Cactus simple enough to drive, regardless of its minor irritations. The PureTech 110 Flair, deserves a massive tick in the box when it comes to economy. If you’re in a Scroogelike mood, you’ll be able to squeeze up to 80mpg out of the small family car. The three-cylinder engine makes the Citroen lighter than its four-pot diesel sibling’s. This not only helps efficiency, it also settles the ride a tad. That said; the C4 Cactus is not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to handling. Its rear tends to skip over uneven tarmac – especially when tackling corners quickly. Furthermore, the Cactus’ steering is bizarrely paced, and deficient in centre feel and feedback – but it remains planted when hammering along motorways. There are many compact vehicles out there, and this isn’t the best driver’s car; but it isn’t the worst by any

means. If anything, the Citroen Cactus will probably appeal to your emotions more than the actual drive. In all likelihood, you’ll love gazing at it parked outside your house, and people will always comment on it. Look at it as an ice-breaker when it comes to awkward social moments. Turn up at a work ‘do’ in this, and anyone spotting you in the car park will definitely speak to you about your nonconformist motor. Bearing in mind its inventive, distinctive interior and its jovial, unconventional allure, a slightly better driving experience may be all the Citroen Cactus requires to clinch the deal.

Hearing Technology and Me: Michael Cook Michael, aged 21 from High Wycombe, is a man of many talents, including wildlife photography, graphic design and music. He was also born with a severe hearing loss and uses hearing aids to help him to achieve his goals. We asked Michael what it is like to be a young person with a hearing loss and his experiences with hearing technology. When did you first start wearing hearing aids? I was diagnosed with a hearing loss at 5 months old and at the same time was given my first pair of hearing aids. Apart from pulling them out of my ears to throw them away as a baby, I’ve always accepted them and understood the difference they make to my daily life. How would you say your hearing has affected you as a person? One of my biggest passions in life is photography, and I think that came from my hearing loss, as it is something I can do alone and lets me create a foundation for others to make their own stories. While I prefer to do hobbies and activities by myself, I still take part in social occasions with my family and work here at Aston Hearing. I have not let my hearing loss dictate my life or define me as a person. How can we address stigmas associated with hearing devices? As 1 in 6 people in the UK now face a hearing loss, I hope wearing aids becomes as common as wearing glasses. Although I don’t feel attached to any stigmas, I wear my aids extra loud for people to see. I’m more than happy to show people my aids and answer any questions they have.
When did you make the change from NHS devices to private technology? My mum (Paula) is an audiologist and when she started to work at Aston Hearing at the beginning of 2016 we decided to try something different. The technology has been amazing – the devices are more powerful with more amplification, as well as much better sound quality. I now work in an office so I really appreciate the improved performance. Do you make use of any features on your devices? With modern technology, there are so many options for Bluetooth connectivity and streaming. So far I’ve really enjoyed connecting with my phone so that I can stream music directly into my hearing devices. I’m always interested in the possibilities of hearing technology and would be open to trying new features. What are your hopes for the future of hearing technology? Technology has moved on so far in the last few years and I think we are about to see more ground-breaking developments. Personally, I would love to have the aids synching with biometric data, so they would be able to tell you your brain activity, heart rate and other vital statistics. Sounds like science fiction, but it could soon be a reality!!

Bowen / Neuro Structural Integrative Therapy may help with all of the above and not a week goes by without me seeing a selection of clients with back, knee and shoulder problems. Whilst everybody is different, the common theme is the wish to be pain free and resume an active lifestyle. Chronic pain is debilitating, clients have often tried to gain relief with prescriptive medicines, scans, invasive procedures i.e. Injections or arthroscopies. Early treatment of injured Backs, Knees and Shoulders is ideal, however, as many clients will have pursued the medical route, I get to treat them at a chronic stage of the condition. At this stage the body is in a state of dis-ease. I frequently say ‘ your body is like a figure of 8 train track, an incident occurring in your lower back (knee, shoulder) is likely to affect every other part of your body’. This helps to explain why clients report headaches, aches and pains in other joints, feeling unbalanced, sluggish digestion etc, and of course all this will be addressed during a treatment.
Treatment
Everybody is different and so is every response to injury. Therefore, in the first instant, your treatment always includes a full consultation whereby your past medical history, along with current issues, accidents and lifestyle are discussed, noted and addressed. Physical therapy will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing therapeutic work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support, using Epsom salt baths, magnesium oil spray, ACV and of course proper hydration. What are Retained Primitive Reflexes? In the womb and in the early stages of infancy, when the decision making processes have not fully developed, your function and survival are ensured by a host of reflexes called ‘primitive’ reflexes. They stimulate effective growth and development and play a crucial role in keeping you safe. For example, they help you in the birthing process, breast feeding and gripping onto things. As you mature, these reflexes are no longer needed so they inhibit to allow the higher brain to take over control. This is an essential and ‘neural-typical’ stage of your development, allowing you to perform the more complex tasks required in learning, movement control, emotional maturity and social interactions. However, it is becoming increasingly more common for these reflexes to remain present. As a consequence of this, your nervous system may automatically react inappropriately and undesirably in certain situations. This can adversely affect your development, learning and behaviour and is referred to as Retained Primitive Reflexes.
How would I recognise this in myself or my children?
If retained, the reflexes can play havoc with our ability to function effectively and ageappropriately. Often, this can present as ASD’s, dyslexia and dyspraxia type symptoms but also a myriad of symptoms of developmental delay including immature behaviour, shyness, speech & language difficulties, poor focus, concentration & classroom learning, weak pencil grip, poor sleep patterns and even a difficult relationship with food and digestion. There may also have been indicators in the early stages such as a delayed or difficult birth, feeding/ latching issues, reflux, delayed speech, teething or walking, failure to crawl (or bum shufflers), W-sitting, toe walking and a general failure to thrive.
What is the treatment? It is a very straightforward assessment process to establish if the primitive reflexes have indeed been retained. Once a profile of the reflexes has been built in the initial assessment, the treatment is then a series of neural stimulation programmes that are delivered at home in the morning and evening – it takes less than 5 minutes. It’s then necessary to follow-up 6 weeks later.
