GET THE LOOK A simple guide to picking your perfect hearth...

By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd

W

ith winter on its way, you may be considering replacing or updating your fireplace, including the hearth. The hearth is simply the floor of a fireplace made from heat resistant materials like brick or stone. As hearths are made from such durable materials, they’re not something you’ll be buying regularly – which means you might not know where to start. Here’s our simple guide to picking the perfect hearth. 1. Do I need a hearth?

A fire should sit on a hearth so that it’s surrounded by a surface made from non-combustible materials. Open fires, log and coal burners need a hearth, however most modern freestanding stoves don’t but check with your retailer. 2. What size hearth do I need?

Different retailers might say slightly different sizes but the average recommended are: • •

150mm at each side and to the rear of the stove/fireplace.

300mm-500mm from the front of the stove/fireplace, depending on the size.

3. What material should I pick?

Non-combustible, hard-wearing materials are a must. Natural stones – slate, granite, marble, limestone, along with ceramic or quarry tiles and brick. Slate and granite work best. They are heat resistant, if a bit of coal or burning log falls on to them, they won’t be easily scratched or stained. They come in many different finishes for modern or rustic looks. 3. Tiles, 1 piece, 2 pieces?

When you’re ordering a stone hearth, you may be asked if you want one piece or two. This is to prevent the stone from getting too hot and buckling. However, with stoves, one piece of stone cut in to a t-shape and slotted in to the recess won’t buckle. For open fires which are closer to the stone, two pieces are recommended. 4. How thick?

A minimum of 20mm thickness is recommended for the hardest materials like slate and granite. For slightly softer stones, marble and limestone, we recommend 30mm. Hearths can be flush to the floor or built on an upstand. 5. Colours and design options?

Most stone fabricators, including Coulon Stone have a stock of incredible off-cuts that make perfect hearths. It means you might be able to find a unique, statement hearth, for cheaper than you think, as well as all your traditional blacks, greys, whites and beiges. Head to your local stone fabricator to get some ideas before settling on something. For more inspiration or assistance visit our website www.coulonstone.com or pop into our Stokenchurch Showroom.

Reduce your Fuel costs.. Why is regular servicing important and how can it cut el cts? An annual boiler safety check and boiler

service carried out by a professional service engineer ensures that your boiler is functioning properly. Regular servicing of your boiler is important as it ensures that the boiler is working to the specifications designed by the boiler manufacturer. This will help prolong the life of the boiler as well as reduce the risk of faults and expensive repairs down the line. The efficiency of oil fired boilers deteriorates with use. There are several reasons for this, the key ones being: •

Soot production from the combustion process coats the heat exchanger surfaces

The critical air-to-fuel combustion ratio changes due to gradual component wear

A boiler service will remove any soot and, by adjustment, will re-establish the optimum combustion conditions. But while optimising operating efficiency is paramount in these days of rising fuel costs, there are other important benefits in having your boiler serviced: •

in good time

A variety of operational systems and components will be checked including: • •

Oil leaks Boiler start-up performance

Noises that give an early signal of pending component failures

Worn nozzles that increase fuel consumption

Just like cars, boilers can operate for many years without servicing but generally with fuel consumption penalties, undermining reliability and even safety implications. Get your boiler serviced at least once a year to help pro-long its life and reduce the risks of ctly repairs. Failure to regular servicing could result in a break down leading to no heating and potentially no hot water.

By checking the safety controls, early failures can be detected and rectified Operating in and around the Buckinghamshire area, Elliott Oil specialises in maintaining all domestic oil fired appliances including AGA’s & Rayburns. For more information, visit www.elliott-oil.com or call 01865 362743

NEWS & EVENTS in our region A special antiques and collectables valuation event is coming to Thame.. The experts of Lockdales Auctioneers will be providing free valuations to the public on Thursday 5th October, 11am to 3pm at Thame Town Hall.

There will be experts providing valuations on the collectables highlighted on the advert below. No appointment is necessary at this event, simply turn up with your items and the valuers will be happy to see you. Members of the public will have the option, if they wish, to consign their goods to auction (subject to terms & conditions). Cash purchase offers are also available. Valuations will be provided free of charge, with no obligation. High quality illustrated catalogues from previous auctions will be given away on a complimentary basis in order for the public to get a better idea of the services available. Lockdales have conducted hundreds of events throughout the UK, and some very interesting items have been brought along. One in particular was a Rolex wristwatch, showing signs of age, with a curious textured black dial. Leading up to the sale it became clear that this was no ordinary watch. The serial number was traced to the small batch of Rolex Explorer wristwatches, specially made for Sir Edmund Hillary and his team of mountaineers in 1953, those who famously made the first ascent of Mount Everest. The watch sold at auction for over ÂŁ27,000!

Thame Art Crawl

Autumn Green Fayre

This year, as part of Thame Arts & Literature Festival (TAL), Thame will host its first ever ‘Art Crawl’, giving festival goers the chance to stroll around Thame between events and explore the different venues celebrating art in the town centre. Running from Wednesday 10th – Saturday 14th October, the Art Crawl includes the ‘Sparksartists’ event shown in the TAL brochure. It will also feature established galleries, artist and makers shops; pop up art exhibitions at 9 different venues; live art activities where you can watch an artist at work, and even get involved yourself; and a showcase of community arts groups, to inspire everyone to get creative. Thame has a wealth of artistic talent and this event hopes to be the first of many that celebrate this. For more information please visit the Thame Town Council website where events are being added and updated regularly.

Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth are holding their Autumn Green Fayre on Saturday 7th October at Thame Town Hall, 10:00am – 2:00pm, with lots to do, see and buy.

Thame Town Centre shops are also getting involved in TAL by dressing their windows to celebrate the festival. The theme this time is ‘Jane Austen’, to celebrate the bi-centenary of her death.

There will be local and Fair-Trade stalls selling a variety of gifts, crafts, jewelry, clothes, produce and cakes. Free children’s activities will be provided using recycled or natural materials, as well as a chance to make your own Autumn decoration. Come and enjoy an inexpensive lunch of homemade soup and a roll. Cakes and refreshments are also available. If you have any surplus produce that you have grown in your garden or allotment, you can donate it to Friends of the Earth at the Green Fayre, and it will be sold on to others for a small contribution, so avoiding waste and helping to support Friends of the Earth. Alternatively you can do a ‘produce’ swap. Entrance to the Green Fayre is free, with free lucky dip prizes for younger children.

on the Mic... E Q very month we focus on particular music groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. This month we are going to focus on Red Kite Radio, a wonderful new service for the local area which is based at Haddenham Garden Centre!

did the idea for Red Kite Radio Q: How come about?

: A

We started as a team of friends from Haddenham and Thame who all had worked in commercial radio with an idea of creating a pop up radio station for 2 weeks per year to celebrate the Haddenham Beer Festival. So ‘Summerfest Radio’ was born. We did it 4 years in a row with a lot of support from the community to go for a full time community radio licence and widen our reach to focus on Thame, Haddenham and the surrounding villages.

us about the process of setting up a new radio station? Q: Tell A:

Well, it’s really quite stressful getting everything to work and a lot of equipment to install. We are lucky to have our studios in the Haddenham Garden Centre but it is created within an old portacabin which has been completely refurbished and refitted with cabling, internal walls and soundproofing alongside a lot of computer technology which allows us to put our programmes together. It took almost a year of planning and preparation.

are the main objectives of Q: What Red Kite Radio? A:

To provide a community service of Classic Hits from the 60’s to today with information and education, for Thame and the surrounding villages. We offer our VOICEBOX feature so local groups and organisations can make announcements about themselves or upcoming events. We also offer local societies, like the U3A, WI, Guides, Scouts, etc the chance to tell the listeners their story via our weekly TAKEOVER show. Local businesses too can benefit from advertising at much less costly rates than the national services provide. We bring the neighbourhood into the home.

: Tell us about your presenters?

A:

We have a number of local presenters. The team is a mix of young and old from all areas, with a vast repertoire of music knowledge and preferences. We’re always keen to build the team so anyone can come in and give it a go after completing our training. We train the presenters in the studio to operate the desk and control the playlist system. I came to broadcasting late in life but it’s always been an ambition of mine to get on the radio. Now, thanks to Red Kite Radio, I have achieved that goal.

is Red Kite Radio involved in Q: How the local community? A:

We support and give air time to announcing local events and happenings. We promote local bands and groups and give them the opportunity to come in and be interviewed live as we do for local organisations like Thame Council, The Blue Cross, Chiltern Air Ambulance etc. As above, the VOICEBOX and TAKEOVER features give the community the chance to speak for themselves and reach a wider audience than local village newsletters and posters do. We repeat the announcements regularly so that they are heard whenever folk may be listening.

Q: How can you be contacted? A:

We have a direct line to the studio on 01844 299107 or SMS on 07599 789176 but the quickest way to contact us is to email contact@redkiteradio.com or use the contact form on our website www.redkiteradio. com. Leave a message if we are not able to take the call.

Food & Drink

Dine at the Deli at No.5 in celebration of their 1st Birthday... On Friday 20th October 2017 at 7:00pm, Joe and Hannah will be hosting a party at the Deli at No.5 to celebrate their first, extremely successful, year in business. Since opening the doors to the quaint independent delicatessen in October last year, 5a Buttermarket has become a haven for local food lovers who regularly frequent the Deli for their weekly fix of quality artisan Joe Bastin & Hannah Jones with the Lady food and drink, all sourced from local producers. As a Mayor of Thame opening The Deli at No.5 thank you, the young business owners would like to in October 2016. invite residents and the local businesses of Thame (and surrounding) along to an evening of Fine Wine and tasty Canapes. Guests at the party will also have the opportunity to meet and talk to some of the fantastic local producers whose quintessentially British creations adorn the shelves of The Deli. One of the confirmed producers attending the event are Puddingstone Distillery who are the creators of Campfire Gin. Distilled from the first operating gin distillery in the Chilterns, founders Ben & Kate Marston produce their award-winning gin in small batches using ten carefully selected botanicals, which include rich coffee cherry, sweet, fresh orange, hazelnut and piney juniper. This results in a gin that leads with a citrus nose and juniper palate, has a rich middle and sweet end that builds, sip, after sip. Daws Hill, a Radnage based vineyard who make Sparkling Wine, Cider and Cider Vinegar will also on hand to further educate your palate in the art of wine tasting. WANT TO ATTEND? Please RSVP by calling 01844 214229 or emailing hello@thedeliatno5.co.uk. Places at the event will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Another exciting development at The Deli at No.5 is the introduction of their Tasting Events which will be hosted on various dates throughout the year - watch this space for date announcements! These will include British Wine and Cheese Pairing, Gin & Cheese Pairing and Wine & Charcuterie Tasting. The Deli can also be booked for Private Functions and Corporate Events as well as Food/Drink Tasting evenings in the home or work place. Please contact the Deli for further information about this service.

In the spotlight... Citroën C4 Cactus PureTech 110 Flair

MOTORING

The turbo-powered Citroen C4 Cactus may not be a sharp handler, @carwriteups but it’s bristling with character. That’s the opinion of our motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay. Read his review to find out more about the car.

If you like a bit of Gallic eccentricity, then the oddly

named Cactus could be the car you’ve been dreaming about. To some, it has a face only a mother could love. To others, it’s a work of art. I’ll let you decide on that one; after all, a picture is worth a thousand words. The Puretech 110 Flair variant, tested here, is undoubtedly the model to go for if, like me, you’ve been seduced by the down-to-earth charisma of the Cactus. But, should you be worried about the way the car drives? Not that much; well, not unless you’re expecting stacks of power. Even with 110ps, the French hatchback’s performance is only satisfactory – but it’s much better than its diesel sibling in terms of flexibility and response. Its five-gear manual transmission’s throw does feel rather longlegged, and the PureTech gasps under 15mph in second gear. Additionally, it feels like it might stall; however, it spins cleanly to produce a good turn of speed from 1500rpm onwards. This makes the petrol-powered Cactus simple enough to drive, regardless of its minor irritations. The PureTech 110 Flair, deserves a massive tick in the box when it comes to economy. If you’re in a Scroogelike mood, you’ll be able to squeeze up to 80mpg out of the small family car. The three-cylinder engine makes the Citroen lighter than its four-pot diesel sibling’s. This not only helps efficiency, it also settles the ride a tad. That said; the C4 Cactus is not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to handling. Its rear tends to skip over uneven tarmac – especially when tackling corners quickly. Furthermore, the Cactus’ steering is bizarrely paced, and deficient in centre feel and feedback – but it remains planted when hammering along motorways. There are many compact vehicles out there, and this isn’t the best driver’s car; but it isn’t the worst by any

26

means. If anything, the Citroen Cactus will probably appeal to your emotions more than the actual drive. In all likelihood, you’ll love gazing at it parked outside your house, and people will always comment on it. Look at it as an ice-breaker when it comes to awkward social moments. Turn up at a work ‘do’ in this, and anyone spotting you in the car park will definitely speak to you about your nonconformist motor. Bearing in mind its inventive, distinctive interior and its jovial, unconventional allure, a slightly better driving experience may be all the Citroen Cactus requires to clinch the deal.

Your Local Computer Repair & Support The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Look Local Magazine has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “I am really pleased to have found you having received very poor advice and workmanship from others. As a complete “non-techie” I need someone who listens to my issues and without patronising me will go away and fix things for me plus explaining matters to me in language I can understand. Thank goodness I found you guys at PChelp4U because that’s just what you do for me, well done.” Phil Simmons, Chalgrove “I have been most grateful for the prompt, efficient and helpful way PChelp4U sorted out my serious computer problems. The patience shown by Rob was quite remarkable and I am delighted with the result. I would highly recommend this inexpensive service. All is going well now. Very many thanks to your excellent Company! Best wishes.” Tom Holden, Watlington “I first discovered PChelp4U about a year ago when I was having problems with my lap top. Unfortunately, after trying several things it proved to be irreparable. However, Ben was extremely helpful in finding me a new one which suited my needs & price range perfectly. I was very happy with the service I received, especially having it brought to my home and set up for me. I would definitely use this company again for any PC problems & certainly recommend!” Sonia Max, Thame “I was very pleased with the work that your guy did for us. He was professional, pleasant and courteous: he even solved the problem of 1 of our computers losing a signal all the time. I would certainly recommend your company!” Maureen Samwell, Chinnor “Thank you to PChelp4U for building our brand new website and for the efficient, professional and friendly service received throughout – we are delighted with the result. An excellent local service which we would have no hesitation recommending to others.” Chris & Maria, Thame Show, Thame Read more at www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials Contact form: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/chinnor-it-support Email: support@pc-help-4u.co.uk Landline: 01844 292989 or 01491 670014

Hearing Technology and Me: Michael Cook Michael, aged 21 from High Wycombe, is a man of many talents, including wildlife photography, graphic design and music. He was also born with a severe hearing loss and uses hearing aids to help him to achieve his goals. We asked Michael what it is like to be a young person with a hearing loss and his experiences with hearing technology. When did you first start wearing hearing aids? I was diagnosed with a hearing loss at 5 months old and at the same time was given my first pair of hearing aids. Apart from pulling them out of my ears to throw them away as a baby, I’ve always accepted them and understood the difference they make to my daily life. How would you say your hearing has affected you as a person? One of my biggest passions in life is photography, and I think that came from my hearing loss, as it is something I can do alone and lets me create a foundation for others to make their own stories. While I prefer to do hobbies and activities by myself, I still take part in social occasions with my family and work here at Aston Hearing. I have not let my hearing loss dictate my life or define me as a person. How can we address stigmas associated with hearing devices? As 1 in 6 people in the UK now face a hearing loss, I hope wearing aids becomes as common as wearing glasses. Although I don’t feel attached to any stigmas, I wear my aids extra loud for people to see. I’m more than happy to show people my aids and answer any questions they have.

When did you make the change from NHS devices to private technology? My mum (Paula) is an audiologist and when she started to work at Aston Hearing at the beginning of 2016 we decided to try something different. The technology has been amazing – the devices are more powerful with more amplification, as well as much better sound quality. I now work in an office so I really appreciate the improved performance. Do you make use of any features on your devices? With modern technology, there are so many options for Bluetooth connectivity and streaming. So far I’ve really enjoyed connecting with my phone so that I can stream music directly into my hearing devices. I’m always interested in the possibilities of hearing technology and would be open to trying new features. What are your hopes for the future of hearing technology? Technology has moved on so far in the last few years and I think we are about to see more ground-breaking developments. Personally, I would love to have the aids synching with biometric data, so they would be able to tell you your brain activity, heart rate and other vital statistics. Sounds like science fiction, but it could soon be a reality!!

What’s the solution to problematic Back, Knee & Shoulder pain when the Doc can’t help..?

You are in pain, the pain medication isn’t really having an effect, life is difficult, work may be affected, you feel ‘fed up’. To compound this, your Doctor may or may not send you to a specialist. IF you get to see a Specialist he may send you away without further investigation. So could a complimentary treatment such as Bowen Therapy be the answer to your woes? Jennifer Webster, our regular feature writer, explains more...

Over the last few months NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) guidelines have changed for the management of back pain from a medical perspective and current studies by Oxford Orthopaedic Consultants are suggesting that some invasive knee and shoulder investigations and surgery are not necessary.

Hands-on soft tissue therapy i.e. Bowen /NST

Reassurance and encouragement to continue with a normal life style

Information about the nature of pain and psychological support

Supportive physical activity, exercise plans and programmes to improve fitness

Return to work schedules

Bowen / Neuro Structural Integrative Therapy may help with all of the above and not a week goes by without me seeing a selection of clients with back, knee and shoulder problems. Whilst everybody is different, the common theme is the wish to be pain free and resume an active lifestyle. Chronic pain is debilitating, clients have often tried to gain relief with prescriptive medicines, scans, invasive procedures i.e. Injections or arthroscopies. Early treatment of injured Backs, Knees and Shoulders is ideal, however, as many clients will have pursued the medical route, I get to treat them at a chronic stage of the condition. At this stage the body is in a state of dis-ease. I frequently say ‘ your body is like a figure of 8 train track, an incident occurring in your lower back (knee, shoulder) is likely to affect every other part of your body’. This helps to explain why clients report headaches, aches and pains in other joints, feeling unbalanced, sluggish digestion etc, and of course all this will be addressed during a treatment.

Treatment

Everybody is different and so is every response to injury. Therefore, in the first instant, your treatment always includes a full consultation whereby your past medical history, along with current issues, accidents and lifestyle are discussed, noted and addressed. Physical therapy will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing therapeutic work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support, using Epsom salt baths, magnesium oil spray, ACV and of course proper hydration. If you are struggling to resolve your aches and pains please contact me for further information. Jen Webster Bowen | Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com | T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

Doctors are rethinking treatment protocols and it is becoming clear that conservative treatment for some ‘complaints’ is the way forward. Therefore the following may be recommended:

NUTURING young minds Are retained reflexes holding your child back? Could neurodevelopmental therapy help? We talk to therapist and mum Jo Rodhouse BSc(Hons), of Thame Therapy Clinic. www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

What are Retained Primitive Reflexes? In the womb and in the early stages of infancy, when the decision making processes have not fully developed, your function and survival are ensured by a host of reflexes called ‘primitive’ reflexes. They stimulate effective growth and development and play a crucial role in keeping you safe. For example, they help you in the birthing process, breast feeding and gripping onto things. As you mature, these reflexes are no longer needed so they inhibit to allow the higher brain to take over control. This is an essential and ‘neural-typical’ stage of your development, allowing you to perform the more complex tasks required in learning, movement control, emotional maturity and social interactions. However, it is becoming increasingly more common for these reflexes to remain present. As a consequence of this, your nervous system may automatically react inappropriately and undesirably in certain situations. This can adversely affect your development, learning and behaviour and is referred to as Retained Primitive Reflexes.

How would I recognise this in myself or my children?

If retained, the reflexes can play havoc with our ability to function effectively and ageappropriately. Often, this can present as ASD’s, dyslexia and dyspraxia type symptoms but also a myriad of symptoms of developmental delay including immature behaviour, shyness, speech & language difficulties, poor focus, concentration & classroom learning, weak pencil grip, poor sleep patterns and even a difficult relationship with food and digestion. There may also have been indicators in the early stages such as a delayed or difficult birth, feeding/ latching issues, reflux, delayed speech, teething or walking, failure to crawl (or bum shufflers), W-sitting, toe walking and a general failure to thrive.

What is the treatment? It is a very straightforward assessment process to establish if the primitive reflexes have indeed been retained. Once a profile of the reflexes has been built in the initial assessment, the treatment is then a series of neural stimulation programmes that are delivered at home in the morning and evening – it takes less than 5 minutes. It’s then necessary to follow-up 6 weeks later.
