GET THE LOOK The hot fireplace trends creating a heat By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd
wave this winter.....
The leaves are turning and jumpers have been dug out, autumn is here. But don’t get
yourself down thinking about the cold that’s about to come. Why not start preparing your ultimate hibernation hideaway by updating your fireplace. Imagine the sound of a crackling fire, the toasty hug around your feet and the warm, red glow of flames. For a little inspiration, here are three of the biggest fireplace trends you can expect this winter.
1. FIREPLACES IN YOUR BEDROOM, BATHROOM AND BEYOND. As we know, trends, like seasons are cyclical. Having a fireplace in every room was more common place during the Victorian era, when it was a necessity rather than a fashion, however it’s quickly becoming big business in today’s interiors world. With more people seeking elemental living, as well as looking for alternatives to electricity and gas, the idea of putting a fireplace at the end of your bed, and your bath, is becoming a desired one. 2. THE NATURALLY MODERN As mentioned above one of our leading requirements when designing our homes today is the idea of living closer to nature. But of course, we want to eat our cake too, so we also want that coveted contemporary look. One way to merge the two is by having a modern wall mounted fire, with a natural stone or wood feature wall behind it. For example a cool, carrara marble or a galactic like granite. 3. QUALITY It’s an oldie but a goody. Nothing beats quality, and more and more consumers are prioritising quality over price. Fireplaces can be a complex mind field so you need an expert to guide you. Take your time to find a supplier who uses their expertise and experience to provide high-quality products and ensures complete customer satisfaction. A fireplace is a valuable focal point so worth seeking perfection for. At Coulon Stone we’ve been creating bespoke, natural stone fireplaces for 25 years. Visit our showroom in Stokenchurch to look at samples and to talk through design ideas and specifications. Or call us on 01494 484333 or email us at info@coulonstone.com.

Your Local Computer Repair & Support The response to our computer repair & support advertising in Look Local Magazine has been overwhelming and we now have lots of new clients on our books, many of whom have signed up to our monthly, remote support cover. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts on our services: “I am really pleased to have found you having received very poor advice and workmanship from others. As a complete “non-techie” I need someone who listens to my issues and without patronising me will go away and fix things for me plus explaining matters to me in language I can understand. Thank goodness I found you guys at PChelp4U because that’s just what you do for me, well done.” Phil Simmons, Chalgrove “I have been most grateful for the prompt, efficient and helpful way PChelp4U sorted out my serious computer problems. The patience shown by Rob was quite remarkable and I am delighted with the result. I would highly recommend this inexpensive service. All is going well now. Very many thanks to your excellent Company! Best wishes.” Tom Holden, Watlington “I first discovered PChelp4U about a year ago when I was having problems with my lap top. Unfortunately, after trying several things it proved to be irreparable. However, Ben was extremely helpful in finding me a new one which suited my needs & price range perfectly. I was very happy with the service I received, especially having it brought to my home and set up for me. I would definitely use this company again for any PC problems & certainly recommend!” Sonia Max, Thame “I was very pleased with the work that your guy did for us. He was professional, pleasant and courteous: he even solved the problem of 1 of our computers losing a signal all the time. I would certainly recommend your company!” Maureen Samwell, Chinnor “Thank you to PChelp4U for building our brand new website and for the efficient, professional and friendly service received throughout – we are delighted with the result. Thame has a variety of fantastic opportunities for budding musicians who wish to join together with other likeminded people. From bands to choirs to bell ringing! We also host a huge variety of annual musical events. Haddenham Ukulele Musos! - HUM meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month 7:30pm - 9:30pm at the Rose and Thistle, Station Road, Haddenham, Bucks HP17 8AJ. Their main objective is to learn and play popular songs from the last 100 years on the ukulele. The songs in their repertoire can be downloaded from the songs section of their website or are available at the sessions. The musicians vary from improvers to experienced ukulele players and the tunes vary in level of difficulty. Improvers can just join in the chords they know and leave the rest to the more experienced uke players. The emphasis is on fun and enjoying yourself! You may be wondering… “What is a Muso?!” ‘Muso’ is a British/Australian diminutive or slang version of ‘musician’ dating from the 1960s. Today a ‘Muso’ tends to refer to someone who is obsessed with playing music and is used widely in Australia.

To find out more and to apply for membership please visit: www.thamechoralsociety.org.uk/ members-page.html The main item in their Christmas concert offering this year is a performance of Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, a name that does not refer to nature of the work but to the form of the mass. Rossini, by calling it ‘little’, was alluding to its original scoring for just 12 singers plus two pianos and harmonium. Although he later made an arrangement for full orchestra, the piano/harmonium arrangement that we shall be performing is particularly interesting and unusual with considerable demands placed on the pianist (the second piano part is usually omitted today) with the harmonium or organ reed stops providing the orchestral fill. The concert will take place on Saturday 8th December at

TREATING INJURIES with Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk
Alok, a musculoskeletal extended scope physiotherapist at Thame Therapy Clinic, explains why early treatment of an injury is of paramount importance. If the condition is left untreated for long time, it becomes chronic which can lead to secondary problems. Chronic pain can be difficult to treat and delays normal function. Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is the treatment of any problem affecting soft tissues, muscles and joints. The term musculoskeletal pain covers a very wide range of conditions often caused by an injury to the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves. This can be caused by number of factors including jerky movements, car accidents, falls, fractures, sprains, dislocations and direct blows to the muscles. It can be acute, chronic or intermittent and symptoms can include but not limited to: • • • •
Pain, aching or stiffness Fatigue / Sleep Disturbances The feeling that your muscles have been pulled or overworked Twitching muscles
Alok has been working at Thame Therapy clinic for more than five years, treating all types of MSK and sports related injuries with special interest in shoulder and spinal related conditions. He has trained in a variety of specialised treatment techniques such as Manual Therapy, Injection Therapy, Acupuncture, Taping, Myofascial Release, Trigger Point Therapy and Sports Massage. Along with knowledge of diagnostic image readings, he provides a holistic treatment package for musculoskeletal problems. Alok completed his postgraduation in MSK from Sheffield Hallam University in 2008, postgraduation Diploma in Orthopaedic Medicine in 2010. He is a qualified injection therapist with over five years’ experience and has recently completed post-graduation Certificate in Diagnostic MSK Ultrasound recently, his third master’s level education. He is registered with HCPC and CSP. He also works at East Oxford Health Centre, NHS which involves working closely with Orthopaedic consultants and diagnostics team. His role is to undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations; use advanced clinical reasoning, investigative and manual assessment techniques to provide an accurate diagnosis of their condition, perform steroid injections and refer for surgery as required. Alok recommends early intervention and exercise therapy for all soft tissue, muscular and joint problems. He combines his clinical skills with a friendly, collaborative approach.

Saturday 6th October and support for Helen House Hospice... The main aim of the day is to help raise awareness of Cerebral Palsy (CP) and to ensure children and adults are not discriminated against and receive the same rights and opportunities as the rest of society. It is also to help support the individuals and organisations who care for them. CP is a lifelong disability, with no know cure. It’s complexity varies in each individual with wide ranging symptoms. Josh is 5 years old, he has severe brain damage caused by lack of oxygen at birth. Josh requires 24/7 care. He is unable to sit, stand or roll unaided and has multiple motor sensory difficulties, he requires tube feeding and constant monitoring. Josh lives at home with his amazing parents, Clare and Simon and a dedicated team of carers to support him ensuring continuity of care. Josh attends PACE - an outstanding school dedicated to helping children with motor disorders to develop and progress, with the aim to be the best they can.
Clare and Simon recently held a festival style event ‘The Matias Fest’ to support ‘Dine at Mine’ - a fundraising initiative organised by Helen House which encourages people to swap a meal out for a meal in, with guests donating what they would have spent on meal to the hospice. Clare and Simon’s event, which included a fun-filled day of activities, bbq’s and pizza making helped to raise £664.00. Clare said ‘Dine at Mine is a great way to fundraise. It offers friends and family the opportunity to get together and enjoy a catch up whilst helping to raise donations and awareness for this amazing cause.’ The main ‘Dine at Mine’ event hosted by Helen House Hospice takes place on Saturday 13th October. For more details please visit www.hdh.org
Bowen Therapy and Josh? I have been seeing Josh regular since he was a little baby. He is a strong little boy and is growing fast. His abilities remain severely limited, though I wish to believe that he recognises me as I am greeted with a big grin, even though my skill at singing nursery rhymes hasn’t improved over the years! The carers continue to say that Josh sleeps better after my visit, and he is certainly more relaxed. Please contact me for further information and Bowen Therapy. Halloween Ideas
Seven Steps to the Perfect Pumpkin Lantern... Step 1. Choose a decent sized, rounded pumpkin. Fresh unblemished ones are best. Work on newspaper as pumpkin carving is messy! Step 2. Use a serrated blade to cut a lid. Make sure the hole is big enough so that you can scoop out the flesh inside. Step 3. Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the pulp and seeds. Thin the walls a little too by scraping away some of the flesh. This makes carving easier and allows more light through. Step 4. It’s best to draw your design in marker first. Bold shapes are easiest. For a professional finish use a paper template. You can draw your own or download one; tape it to the pumpkin then use a sharp pointed tool, like a knitting needle or nail, to poke holes around the design. When you remove the paper, the design will be left on the pumpkin. Step 5. A sharp, serrated knife will work best to cut out your design. Start at the centre and work outwards using short saw-like strokes for better control. Step 6. Rub some petroleum jelly on to the exposed parts of the pumpkin. This stops those areas turning brown. Step 7. If you’re using a real candle, put it in a small glass. Cut holes in the lid to allow heat and smoke to escape. Fairy lights and battery-operated candles are the safest and best options for lighting a pumpkin. Visit www.pumpkinpile.com for some great stencils and ideas.
A cute and seasonal supper Ingredients: 4 Orange peppers | 200g Cooked brown rice |1 tbsp Sunflower oil | 450g Mince| 1 Medium onion finely chopped | 225g Mixed mushrooms, chopped | 350g jar roasted red pepper sauce | 1 tsp Dried oregano | ¼ tsp Chilli flakes | Salt and pepper to taste Serves: 4 | Preparation time: 20 mins | Cooking time: 25 mins Method - For the pepper lanterns Preheat the oven to 180C / Gas Mark 4. Use a sharp knife to slice the top off each pepper horizontally. Don’t discard these tops as they will ne the little hats for the pepper lanterns. Deseed the peppers. Rinse and pat dry with kitchen towel. Use a small paring knife to cut holes into the exterior of the peppers to make pumpkin-lantern style faces. If the peppers don’t stand upright, slice a small amount from the bottom to flatten the surface. For the filling Heat 1 tbsp oil in large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and mushrooms and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until the mushrooms have softened and reduced in size. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add mince, herbs and chilli flakes and continue to cook, stirring occasionally until browned. Drain the excess oil. Cook the rice as per packet instructions. Reduce heat to low, then add the pepper sauce and cooked rice. Stir to combine and cook for 2-3 more minutes, or until mixture is heated through. Fill each pepper to the brim, allow the mixture to spill over slightly. Place a top on to each stuffed pepper and serve with green salad.

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS (2018) Review
MOTORING
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
The Porsche Carrera 4 GTS is the quickest 911 after the Turbo and GT models. In some ways, it is far more real-world than the GT3 or GT2 because it has an additional layer of luxury.
F
itted with a turbocharged 450 PS engine, this 911 is fast. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder lump pulls the Porsche from zero to 62mph in 3.6 seconds and will charge all the way to 191mph – where legal. The car also sticks to the tarmac like superglue because it has four-wheel drive. The hint is the ‘4’ within its ‘Carrera 4 GTS’ name. The model, as you might expect, looks the business. It sits low to the ground with black 20-inch alloys, yellow brake callipers and two centrally located black tailpipes. On the inside, the Carrera 4 GTS’ emphasis on luxury is immediately apparent. Alcantara is everywhere – from the seats to the steering wheel - and while the design is identical to other 911s, the overall ambience is more upmarket. I drove a model which housed Porsche’s PDK 7-speed dual clutch auto transmission instead of the standard manual gearbox. It is a £2930 option £2930, but worth it because it is exact and quick. The paddle shifters located on the 911’s steering wheel are also engaging. They are almost as effective as a manual ‘box because the gear change action makes you feel so bonded with the drivetrain. The Carrera 4 GTS is easy to drive and roars like thunder from the get-go. When you hit the gas hard, there’s a ‘wooshing’ turbo underscore, informing everyone in earshot that something potent is on the move. The car’s low suspension produces a firm ride, so you are utterly aware of the terrain you’re on. Even a change of tarmac will make itself known at slow speeds. It all becomes agreeably comfortable as you pick up the pace, but you are always conscious of what the 911’s wheels are doing on the blacktop – and that’s a good thing. The GTS is best driven on snaking rural roads because you can fiddle with the drive mode button and turn on Sport+. This setting hangs on to the gears longer, meaning the engine takes on a manic character. The resulting performance gives you an injection of adrenaline that only someone with a medical degree

should administer. The coupe’s torque vectoring allows you to push muscle down through all four wheels, and when you’re going hell for leather, you feel the Carrera move muscle to the front wheels. It is even relatively practical for a sports car, with a 125-litre boot, handy cupholders and room for two car seats via Isofix anchor points in the back. So, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is an awesome package - it delivers mindblowing action while being practical and comfortable enough to use every day. It’s attractive, although, as with any 911, the price-tag isn’t. Still, you do tend to get what you pay for, and if you have always wanted a ‘proper’ Porsche, then this is the one you should aspire to.
