What incredible weather we are having as we enter Autumn - my favourite season by far! Its the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors and explore the beautiful Chilterns surrounding us, and although Covid-19 still rears its ugly head and the new ‘rule of 6’ is in place, Guided Walks are except (provided we have taken the necessary safety measures). This means you can still get involved in the ‘Chiltern Celebration’ which has been launched by the Chilterns Conservation Board and takes place throughout the whole of October. It includes a packed programme of nature-based events, walks and activities all designed to inspire families, young people and adults of all ages to discover and enjoy the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Heallth & Wellbeing

Introducing... Neil Hussey, Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach

Hi, I’m Neil and I am looking forward to coming on board with Look Local Magazine as their monthly Fitness feature writer. As a PT with over 16 years experience, I hope to be able to educate you all on the importance of taking time out for you, to focus on improving your overall health. Whether you are looking to lose weight, train for a specific event or simply feel healthier, I provide personal training tailored to your individual goals. I like to practice what I preach, however I also understand how hard it can be to juggle work, family and other commitments to train. I am married and have an 13 year old son who, although can help motivate, can definitely be an easy reason not to train. I aim to motivate you, but not through shouting or by making you feel guilty if you’ve haven’t been able to fit in the training I’ve set you since the last session. Instead I prefer to gain an understanding as to why it’s not worked and find a solution to enable you to continue with your workouts and get the best out of our sessions. And having trained for many events myself I know exactly what you are going through and also how difficult it can be sometimes with injuries and lack of motivation. As well as face-to-face training I also offer online Personal Training via an easy to navigate app, which you can use anywhere in the world. The app provides you with bespoke training programmes, meal plans, coaching tips, exercise videos, progress tracking, notifications so you never miss another workout, instant messaging with your PT and so much more. So if you are looking for a personal trainer who is going to come and shout at you for an hour, make you feel guilty and look down at you from a pedestal for not doing anything between sessions, and then make you not be able to walk from doing hundreds of burpees as punishment, then sorry I am not the PT for you! However, if you are looking for someone to confide in, a PT who will understand and help you overcome the obstacles that life throws at us and help you reach your goals, who you may well see out with a beer in his hand, then we need to talk. News from Thame Therapy Clinic with love from the team Hello to all our current patients and friends, and prospective patients. This is a short summary and update of the therapies available at the clinic from September onwards. We continue to offer face to face treatments across a variety of professions. We understand how important it is to have access to complementary health practitioners given the protracted nature of the covid 19 health crisis and the consequent effect on the mind and body. We are maintaining a careful, ‘covid-secure’ protocol for all those who enter the clinic. We contact and triage all patients before coming for any covid type symptoms, we ask all patients to wear a mask whilst in the clinic and when they are not 2m distance from the practitioner, we ask for hand sanitisation on entry, and we space out treatment times so that there is enough time to clean and air rooms and for there to be only 2 patients in reception at any one time. The treatments we currently offer are: •

Osteopathic: Kieren Spencer ,Kate Lichfield, and Anita Watson are available to see patients.

Physiotherapy: Alok, available to see patients.

Acupuncture: Andy Roscoe, Deborah Amlot and Debbie Robertshaw, available to see patients

Zero Balancing: Andy Roscoe is now available to see patients.

Reflexology: Jill Roarty is now available to see patients. Jill is also now able to offer 45 minute, Back Neck and Shoulder massages.

Homeopathy: Jill Roarty and Selina Humphries are available face to face.

Sport Massage: Rebecca Wasey

Hypnotherapy and Life Coaching: Steph Clarkson and Paul Hughes (Hypnotherapy only).

Pyschotherapy: Phoebe Weilland (hypnopsychotherapy), and Matt Winter (psychodynamic psychotherapy) are now available.

More details of these therapist can be found on our website. To make an appointment or speak to a therapist beforehand, please call reception about Reflexology and Massage or to book an appointment with Jill call Thame Therapy Clinic on 01844 215555 or visit www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk

On arrival you will be given your own ‘Tots Disco bag?’ with all the props you need for class. 2. You will be directed to a floor marking which will be 2m apart from other

Musical Mayhem An award-winning live music experience giving babies and toddlers in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire a lively introduction to traditional, modern and original children’s songs. The groups is now back for live sessions! They run regular term-time drop-in classes in Princes Risborough, Haddenham, Chinnor, Thame and High Wycombe and we are also available to hire for private bookings and toddler parties (current restrictions apply). They are called Musical Mayhem for a reason - embracing the chaos that comes with little people! The children don’t have to sit still on your lap - let them wriggle, dance and express themselves and the session teachers do love a bit of cheeky heckling from the audience. The classes are suitable from birth up to school age and are highly interactive with colourful props, hand puppets, masks, scarves and parachute games to bring

the songs to life. The children get to try different percussion instruments including egg shakers, tapping sticks and jingly bells. There is also a different theme every week. As well as stimulating the cognitive development of babies and young children, they aim to make Musical Mayhem a special, shared experience for you and your little ones that will inspire in them a lifelong love of music and give you many happy memories of singing together. For further information on current classes and to make a booking please visit: www.musicalmayhemuk.co.uk

NEWS & EVENTS

in our region

Get ready for a ‘season of celebration’ with a packed programme of nature-based events, walks and activities in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this autumn. Chilterns

Conservation Board is thrilled to launch a packed programme of nature-based events, walks and activities all designed to inspire families, young people and adults of all ages to discover and enjoy the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Chilterns ‘season of celebration’ will provide people with the opportunity to connect with nature, improve health and wellbeing, meet new people, find out more about the landscape on their doorstep, learn new skills and help support communities and businesses following the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s plenty on offer throughout October with a fantastic programme of events including the brand-new Chilterns Celebration and the ever-popular Chilterns Walking Festival:

The Chilterns Celebration •

A brand-new festival of events designed to celebrate the Chilterns, bringing communities together and inspiring people to explore and enjoy the heritage and landscape around them

Running from 1 – 31 October 2020

The first ever “Chilterns Champions” conference with special guest speaker Chris Packham

Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, our Chalk, Cherries and Chairs Project team has joined forces with community groups and organisations across the Chilterns to provide a whole month of activities and online resources/events to celebrate the Chilterns. From October 1-31, we will be running events and showcasing those already taking place, to extend the season for local businesses and bring communities together around the heritage and landscape of this region we call home. We’ll be welcoming Chris Packham - naturalist, nature photographer, television presenter and author - as keynote speaker at our first ever ‘Chilterns Champions’ conference, where we’ll be talking about Citizen Science, why it’s crucial and how you can get involved. You’ll have the chance to explore a brand new heritage trail around the Wycombe Rye, get creative with art workshops as part of ‘The Big Draw’ on Kingsmead Recreation Ground with Wycombe’s very own wildlife champions, the Chiltern Rangers, experience a live-streaming concert and get involved with our packed programme of walks, talks and local produce tastings.

News & Events The Chilterns Celebration really does have something for everyone. Find the full schedule of events and details on how to book your place at www.chilternsaonb.org/ccc-fest. Running from Saturday 17th October – Sunday 1st November, The Chilterns Walking Festival is an initiative of the Chilterns Conservation Board and take place twice a year, spring and autumn. Now in its seventh year, it has established itself as one of the main contenders in the region’s bountiful events calendar. With over 50 guided walks, activities and events, the 16-day Chilterns Walking Festival has been designed to appeal to different age groups, interests and levels of fitness. Most are free of charge though some require a small fee which is clearly shown. The walks provide opportunities to meet countryside rangers, farmers, archaeologists, historians, food producers and storytellers of the Chilterns. Each walk is guided by an experienced walk leader who will bring their story to life. To assist walk leaders with expected numbers, most events must be pre-booked online at: www. visitchilterns.co.uk/walkingfest. There’s already been lots of interest, so please do book early to avoid disappointment. The ‘season of celebration’ will also support the campaign to extend the visitor season from October right through to spring 2021, with a regular programme of events planned to encourage people to support their local pubs, shops and attractions, all whilst staying covid-19 secure*. The Chilterns Conservation Board’s Chief Executive, Dr Elaine King, said “The Chilterns is a very special landscape with so much to offer, and we are delighted to be holding this celebration that will help people connect with nature, improve their health and wellbeing and celebrate our local heritage and landscapes.” *Covid-19 and staying safe Guided walks are exempt from the Government’s most recent ruling which limits social gatherings to 6 people, provided we have taken the necessary safety measures. All walks and events have been risk assessed and Covid-19 safety precautions adhered to, including maintaining a 2m social distance and limiting numbers. Booking is essential for all events and participants will be asked to provide telephone and email details for purposes of contact tracing. For further information see here: http://bit.ly/CWF_Covid19_guidance

Christmas Card Workshop! Taking place at the Chinnor Pavillion on Sunday 4th October, 10:00am - 10:45am, the Christmas card workshops are BACK! It may be early, but they help you create gorgeous art to send away to be printed and turned into cards and mugs etc. How do the sessions work? You book your family in for a space and will be allocated your own table with your own materials. Due to social distancing, there is a very limited amount of spaces available. The price is for the set of materials and the foot printing service (£8), so a whole family can work together on artwork for the same price. The staff move around the tables, changing PPE for each family, and take footprints for you. You can do several designs if you wish. Once complete, you stick your art work to a unique order form and place your order online! Payment for your products is also taken online. Prices start at £5.95 for a pack of 12 cards, but mugs, wrapping paper and gift tags are also offered. Your printed products will be available to collect from the venue around 4 weeks later. Lovely personal gifts to give and treasure! This year may be a little different, but what a perfect time to give something unique and personal!

Home & Garden

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

How many gardeners does it take to change a bulb? Well that depends on the bulb? Groan!! You will know how many different types of light bulb there are: Halogen, energy saving, LED and that’s before you consider the cap: Bayonet cap, Edison screw to name but a few….

W

elcome Well if you think that’s a lot take a moment to consider the plethora of seasonal blooms now at your disposal: primed and ready for planting. Now’s the time to put your orders in, buy up from supermarkets, local garden centers or the specialist and if your like me – all three, never an opportunity missed! So what advice can I give you if you’re new to this process or if you have only dipped your trowel into the metaphorical tray! There are bulbs for every season, not just spring daffodils (though Narsissus ‘Thalia’, petite, white and scented are divine); first show snowdrops with infinite variation and dwarf Iris, perfectly, purple (My daughters namesake ‘Harmony’ among them) and the strangely iridescent & glowing: Iris histrioides ‘Katherine Hodgekin’(see picture), they go beyond the kind and keen ‘forced’ Christmas gifts of Hyacinth & Narcissus ‘Paper White’. There are Tulips in all varieties (my advice would be to buy species tulips for year on year performance. Although if your budget can stretch doubles are divine), and Summer Alliums; huge child pleasers with A. ‘Globe Master’ and then the fabulous naturalising A.sphaerocephalon. There are late summer bulbs: Nerine bowdenii perfect, magenta pink, hot, south facing border, show stoppers! Lilies (technically Corms, but hey its all just modified stems). There are star like treats with Ornithogalum (star of Bethlehem), Towers of inflorescence with Eremurus (foxtail lilies), and don’t get me started on fritillary (snakes head, crown imperials, and the beautifully black Fritillaria persica. Camassia leichtliniii)s great for naturalising in lawns, Crocus and Colchicum (Spring and Autumn flowering crocus) and there’s more. So many more! So the question is not: how many gardeners to change a bulb? But how many bulbs does it take to change a garden? Plant bulbs three times their depth to ensure year on year flowering. For more top tips on planting and flowering or for other garden services see my Facebook page Mimosa Design, email me on info.mimosadesign@gmail.com or call 07737 286784.

GET THE LOOK -

Home & Garden Where to start when choosing your Natural Stone Fireplace. By Coulon Stone Ltd

September marked the start of autumn, and although we’ve had plenty of sunshine recently, some of

us may be thinking about how we’ll be warming our homes this winter. If you’re thinking of adding a fireplace to your home, or you’d like to update the one you have, it can be difficult to know where to start. With hundreds of designs and materials to choose from, and safety and sizes to consider, it can be a lot to think about. Using our 25 years of experience creating and fitting bespoke fireplaces we’ve come up with some important things to consider when choosing one.

To get the most out of your fire, it’s important to get the right size for your space. If it’s too big, it will dominate the room and it could be too hot, but if it’s too small, it will be overloaded and could jeopardise the lifetime of the stove or fireplace. When you go to a showroom or contact a fireplace installer, go armed with information – the size and use of the room, the insulation in your home, how many windows are there, potential fire type (for example open fire, wood burning stove, electric fire), fireplace placement and the ceiling height. When choosing a material natural stones are perfect for fireplace surrounds and hearths. They’re non-combustible and hard-wearing. Stones like marble, granite, limestone and slate have been used for fireplaces for centuries. Granite and slate make perfect hearths, they’re heat resistant and if a bit of coal or burning log falls on to them, they won’t be easily scratched or stained. They also come in many different finishes including polished or flame brushed for modern or rustic looks. Fireplaces are the focal point of a room so next you’ll need to think about the design. Some recent trends include using black natural stones like slate and Belgian Fossil or pairing traditional stones like marble or limestone with brightly coloured tiles. Websites like Pinterest provide lots of design inspiration, or visit your local fireplace showroom where you may be able to take samples of stones home which can give you a better idea of how that material will work with the light and colours in that room. If you’re thinking of renovating or updating your fireplace but don’t know where to start, Coulon Stone offer a complete service, from helping you choose a material, providing samples to take home, working with you to create a bespoke design, taking measurements, then creating and fitting the fireplace. We can also sign post you to local stove and flue system companies.
