How seasonal is our front cover image! It literally makes me want to jump in and snuggle into one of those jumpers. I love autumn, all the colours and crisp mornings, although summer does seem to have made a late appearance this year doesn’t it, with this gorgeous weather we’ve been having recently. The perfect weather for tending to our gardens before the cold snap returns. If you are a keen gardener, be sure to turn to our ‘Over the Garden Gate’ feature on page 28 by our resident contributor, Lucie Ponsford of Mimosa Landscape Designs. I also wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate our Abingdon Air & Country Show competition winners, Robert Grimes, Christina Brooks both from Chinnor and Katie Thomas of Chalgrove. I hope they and their families had a great time at this event as it returned for the first time since the pandemic. Whilst on the subject of events, Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth are hosting a Swap Shop and Bike Exchange at Chinnor Village Hall on Saturday 10th from 10:00am - Midday and Autumn Green Fayre at Thame Town Hall on Sunday 30th from 10:00am to 3:00pm. For more information on either of these events please contact Maureen Dyroff on 01844 352816 or chinnorthamefoe@ gmail.com. We also have Halloween to enjoy (or avoid) later this month which was great last year in our local villages as lots of houses got really involved in turning their homes into ghostly haunts and leaving treats outside their doors. If anyone is looking for Window Stickers or Vinyl Decals to dress their windows for this spooky affair please visit my other businesses Facebook Page - Scratch-em & Vinyl as we have a vast selection of creepy designs available. And don’t forget to turn your clocks back an hour on Sunday 31st at 2:00am. As always, Stay safe, continue to shop and support local...

THE IMPORTANCE OF A WILL Having a will is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your spouse, children, and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on. A will gives you the opportunity to appoint guardians for your children which is the only way to ensure they are safeguarded if the worst were to happen to you. For more in-depth information or experienced advice regarding Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Funeral Plans contact Michael Bradley

Health & Wellbeing
Making a Will - some important decisions, by Mike Bradley of Integrity Wills
A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will,
creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.
THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf.
APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.
PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant.

Chinnor Runners Battle the Heat in Wales Two local charity runners have raised over £6k attempting to run the length of Wales whilst participating in the world’s toughest mountain race. Here is Simon Pollards account of their gruelling adventure... After six long days of relentless running and climbing, the course did sadly get the better of us but the real winners were the 3 brilliant Charities and Organisations (Diabetes UK, The Paediatrics Diabetes Team (PDT) at the Children’s Ward in Stoke Mandeville Hospital (SMH) and St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School in Chinnor) who will share the amazing funds which the people of south Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire have kindly donated. Mark and myself would like to say a massive thank you to everyone for the kinds words and support with our fundraiser held at the start of September! These funds not only help to support the crucial ongoing work of the Charities and Organisations but the awareness generated over the last few weeks from our event carries a lasting impact and is priceless. It was a brutal 6 days in Wales, these are the stats: • Miles Covered - 180 out of 236 (30 miles per day) • Elevation Gained - 42k feet (1.5 times up Everest) • Time Spent Running - 51 hours • Time Spent Sleeping - 22 hours • Steps - 366k+ • Calories Burnt - 27k+ • Calories Consumed - I hate to think but super tasty! The event was unbelievably tough, from scaling all of the Welsh 3000 summits on Day 1, to travelling 1 mile in 1 hour over a boulder strewn mountain on Day 2, to wading through muddy bogs every day, to trying not to fall over on grassy tussocks with deep ankle breaking covered holes around them, to descending massive wet vertical slopes in the dark after 11 hours of running, to coping with 28 degrees on Monday & 33 degrees on Tuesday, to being kept awake in the tent at night with torrential rain and to covering the last 8 miles of Day 4 in the dark and in pouring rain….these were just some of the highlights! It is hugely frustrating and disappointing to not have completed the challenge in its entirety, but arriving on the start line is in itself a big challenge and one we can be proud of. 40% of the field dropped out on Day 1 vs the usual attrition rate of 20%, 75% of the field were gone by the end of Day 2 vs 60% usually and only 90 completed all 236 miles vs 200 in a normal (cooler) year. We averaged 30+ miles per day for 6 continuous days and finished strongly on the last 40 mile day 6, coming in 9th quickest for that day.

News & Events In summary, the chance to run through such an amazing country and to witness the determination and camaraderie of the fellow competitors in one of the toughest of environments was something we’ll never forget. My final words are reserved for the Charities and Organisations who provide life changing support, this week was for you as a thank you and to show appreciation and support to keep up the invaluable work which you all are doing day in day out…..we are all behind you! There is still time to donate and learn more about the event and the Charities and Organisations which we are helping here: https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/SimonPollard7

The First Thursday Music Club
We have all missed live music, both playing and watching it so, fingers crossed, they are hoping to restart the First Thursday Music Club on 7 October 2021! FTMC are now moving home, after 10 great years at the Stables behind the James Figg pub they are now relocating to a bigger room at Thame Snooker Club in central Thame. The room can hold a lot more people, there is a stage and room for instruments, the artists, and the sound guys. The club will have our own dedicated bar and loos.
Entertainment The club are hoping they can make the sound and light show even better than before. There is also ample free parking right outside. Another change is that FTMC will be requesting a donation entry fee of £3 to the audience. (Obviously acts do not have to give.) The dates are on the first Thursday of each month, here are the 2021 dates: October 7th , November 4th & December 2nd The club will be keeping their walk up open mic slots at the beginning of the evening as this is the essence of the FTMC. They are aiming for 7 acts per evening with a mix of slot lengths to reflect line-ups and repertoire. If people travel far the club like to give them a decent amount of time to play. They are also scheduling in longer for changeovers to make it stress free (hopefully) and allow the odd encore whilst still keeping to time. FTMC welcome all - beginners to virtuoso and love all styles of music. This could be folk, country, americana, blues, reggae, rap, rock, pop, classical - everything if they can host it! If you would like to perform or find out more about the FTMC please contact them via their Facebook page, search ‘The First Thursday Music Club’.
Thame Concert Band Thame Concert Band was formed in 1993 by a small group of local musicians. They pride themselves on being a community band and regularly, in normal times, take part in some of the biggest events in Thame, including Remembrance Sunday and Christmas Carols around the tree. They have a substantial and varied repertoire and perform several of their our own concerts each year alongside events in Thame. This includes the Last Night Of The
Proms concert which is always popular! The band have grown considerably since their formation in 1993 and now boast around 30 regular members - although they are always keen to welcome new musicians! Currently, TCB are supporting Thame Day Centre, a local charity. The band has recently got back to rehearsing, in a safe and socially distanced environment, and are always on the look out for new members to join their fantastic team. For further information and also if you are interested in joining please visit: www.thameconcertband.com or search for ‘Thame Concert Band’ on Facebook
Friday At The Fish Open Mic! Our next ‘Friday at the Fish’ open mic will be taking place on Friday 8th October. This is a totally free event and a wonderful opportunity to perform or just come along to watch the huge host of local musical talent. The music kicks off from 8 pm onwards with 20 minute slots given on a pre-booked basis, though some availability may be left on the night. GET THE LOOK Kitchens Embrace Seamless Styles By Coulon Stone
The modern kitchen has to work hard. It’s no longer just a space to prepare meals - it’s an office, a playroom, a classroom, dining space and much, much more. According to research carried out by Homebase, 88 percent of customers surveyed said their kitchens are for socialising rather than cooking!
Bookmatched Backsplash (Miller Brothers)
Seemless Shelving (Pooky)
Waterfall Island by Coulon Stone
With so much function to cram in to one space, the opportunity to express ourselves through design could feel lost. But through clever design and well thought out material choices, kitchens can perfectly combine function and flare, and provide a space to express ourselves. If you’re planning any changes to your kitchen ahead of (dare we say it) Christmas, consider incorporating some of our favourite seamless styles to add a little luxe to your life.
BOOK-MATCHED BACKSPLASH Book-matched is the practice of matching two slabs of stone, typically marble, quartzite or engineered quartz, so that two adjoining surfaces seamlessly mirror each other, often creating a butterfly effect. Using the same stone used on the rest of the worktop, gliding up the wall in to a book-matched backsplash is the perfect way to add the wow factor to your kitchen. Choosing a marble or engineered (composite) quartz with a deep vein creates intensity and vibrancy, and can dictate the design of the room. But you can also choose a stone with a softer pattern for more traditional or rustic designs, and it will still create a truly unique statement. SEAMLESS SHELVING More than ever people are including floating shelves in their kitchens, styled with coloured glassware, handmade crockery and hanging plants. In-fact, Pinterest have claimed that people searching for “kitchen floating shelves décor” on their social media site is up by 130 percent. The look we love is floating shelves made from the same natural or engineered quartz used for your worktop and splashback creating a stunning and seamless style WATERFALL ISLAND A waterfall edge is created when the material on top of the island unit is carried over the side creating the appearance of a waterfall. A crucial element of the illusion is perfectly matching the veins of the stone where the top meets the side, creating another seamless look and stunning focal point. Extend one side of your island worktop to allow some space to tuck a couple of bar stools under creating a truly social space. If you’re looking for more kitchen worktop inspiration visit our Instagram: @ coulonstoneltd and Pinterest: @coulonstone pages, and our website where as well as our gallery you’ll also find information on our news page about where to begin and what things you need to think about when deciding to update your worktop.

Home & Garden
Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford
The Beautiful Calm of Autumn... October has become my favourite month of the year. It’s a strange choice you might think. But as a gardener October has a warming, settling sense of calm after the hard slog of spring and the endurance of plantings during the summer months. The garden relaxes and with a sigh and settles into beds and borders. I particularly love the colours: ginger and brown, blonds, plumb & ruby reds. Those changing leaves, a spectacle that brings all eyes to nature. This is also, as far as I am concerned, the horticultural new year. Things that have failed can be reassessed, combinations can be rearranged physically with lifting and dividing. New borders conceived with plans that you can pour over and consider as you have months not weeks to get them in. Dreams and wishes hover over your outdoor space loaded with potential. Nothing will be transformed in a moment and rewards will be next years but that is a good way to slow the pace and enjoy the evolution of nature’s rhythms. You can cut borders back now and tidy your gardens of leaf litter and you would not be wrong to do so. It is nice to do an autumn clear down. However, in cold spots it is wise to leave silver leafed and Mediterranean woody perennials such as lavender and fuchsias and other tender herbaceous unsheared. The degrading top growth and surrounding leaf litter will form a floating mulch during winter, which offers a little protection from a hard frost. Though I would be prompt in February/March to clear up to reduce slug population booms and prevent new shoots being chopped in the clear up. Alternatively, you could leave perennials standing now and get the most from the seed heads for the birds. The magical images of ice-crystal covered stems and dew on webs in the low morning light is well worth the suspended snip of secateurs.
With love, Lucie
