In the spotlight... Subaru Levorg
MOTORING
Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist.
A sweet performing 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine sits under the bonnet of Subaru’s latest model – the intriguingly named Levorg.
T
he direct injection lump produces 170PS and a decent 250Nm of torque. That clout is just short of Subaru’s own non turbo assisted 2.5-litre petrol unit, while the torque figure is actually larger. Propelling all four wheels through Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission it’ll do the zero to 62mph sprint in 8.9 seconds. That’s pretty quick, although Subaru is less absorbed with the Levorg’s out-and out performance, instead focusing on its dexterity. The Japanese automaker, once famed for its rallying prowess, has pitched this useful estate car against more sporting motors, using its very own BRZ sports car as a benchmark, as well as models, such as Audi’s S3. It is all to the advantage of safety, Subaru naming dexterity as critical in its cars’ character. For an estate without a sporting focus, its battle against body roll is extremely impressive. It isn’t to the disadvantage of ride comfort, either - at least as much as we could tell hooning around the rural routes of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. The steering is hefty, yet precise, but there is one slight drawback - the wheel doesn’t deliver any tangible feel – the Subaru Levorg shoving into foreseeable understeer if you’re a little bit bold entering a bend. No matter, though as all is very certain, traction is high, and grip correspondingly impressive - though it accomplishes all this without the mischievousness of Subarus of yesteryear. Contrarily, the Levorg, actually takes a lot of its stimulus from Subaru’s fourth-gen Legacy Tourer, the most prevalent model it has produced. Its replacement, the fifthgen model, was considered too large by many, though thanks to some clever packaging, Subaru has jammed all the room of that car, and a bit more, into a smaller physical form. Rear seat occupants have oodles of head and legroom, while the Levorg’s boot opening is conveniently proportioned and the load area offers as much as 1,446 litres of volume when you fold the rear seats down – with
08
@carwriteups
the straightforward push of a switch. Up in the front, the driver looks at a wellordered instrument panel, while the centre console contains a touch screen infotainment unit that’s miles ahead of what Subaru used to offer up. Build quality is, typically, excellent, though now it’s supported by materials that display some extra tactility and high-class finishes. In the United Kingdom, Subaru’s Levorg is offered with just one trim and with loads of standard equipment. Factoryfitted kit includes: push-button start, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, privacy glass, keyless access, sports seats, duel-zone air conditioning and 18inch alloys. All this makes the Levorg a convincing car for 2016.

Warm-up this winter with a natural By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd stone fireplace.
Fields have been harvested and trees have begun turning, autumn
is tiptoeing closer and closer. It may seem early but there’s no harm thinking about getting our homes warm for winter. And what’s warmer and more wintery than gathering around a roaring fire with a mug of something delicious? Fireplaces have always made a wonderful focal point for a room, particularly in the colder months, so it’s worth investing in a design that you love. A popular choice for fire surrounds are natural stones like limestone, marble and sandstone, so we’ve put together three reasons why this might be.
Aesthetics: When discussing the benefits of a natural stone fireplace, it’s seems only right to begin with the aesthetics. They are striking, warm and full of character, and there is a design and material for everyone and every home. From chunky sandstones with Tudor arches, white limestones with classic, geometric lines or simple sets of slate slips. Durability: There’s a reason natural stone fireplaces can be seen in every National Trust manor - they last a long time, which makes them a very sensible investment. They also work perfectly with every type of fire, including open, wood burning stoves and electric. Individuality:Natural stones like sandstone and limestone can be easily carved to create a fireplace as ornate or as minimalist as you want. At Coulon Stone, all of our fireplaces are bespoke and hand carved. You can sit down with us and we can draw up a design that suits you. For inspiration visit our website or showroom (in Stokenchurch) where you can look through our stones and take samples home with you. Or contact us for a FREE quote.

on the Mic... Emusic
very month we will be focussing on particular groups or events in the area and finding out more about our local musicians. In this issue we are going to focus This month we are going to focus on Simon Stafford, a brilliant local guitarist and singer!!
Q: How did your interest in music start?
A
: I think, like most kids, by listening to the radio and the records of friends’ older siblings. I remember, when I was about 12, being totally consumed by a school friend’s older sister’s collection of early rhythm and blues records; it really kick started the whole thing. That and the soundtrack to “South Pacific”.
Q: Who influences you musically?
A
: I have a lot of years behind me so influences are many, constant and ever-changing. Early days, while learning to play, it was Dylan and the US/UK folk revival of the mid- to late-60s: Bert Jansch, Davy Graham, Nick Drake, acoustic blues, etc. That opened a lot of doors to even earlier stuff and the roads to the future. Then the West coast music of the 70s – Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Mothers of Invention, CSNY, etc as well as all the fairly main stream British stuff like the Beatles, Stones, Bowie, Van Morrison, and the more esoteric stuff – Soft Machine, Mike Oldfield, Bill Fay, Pentangle, Roy Harper, Incredible String Band, and so on. Singer-songwriters such as Jackson Browne, Warren Zeavon, Joni Mitchell, Springsteen, Neil Young, Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Richard Thompson; the alt-country of Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, and the more contemporary like the Fleet Foxes, Nickel Creek, The Be Good Tanyas, Arcade Fire, John Grant. The Velvet Underground were always a massive influence as well. Plus there’s a whole lot of stuff (I could fill a book) of stuff that just makes your heart
beat a bit faster – a lot of world music (King Sunny Adé and Souad Massi amongst a lot of others), oud music of the middle east, some contemporary jazz, Eric Satie, a cappella choral music, O’ Carolan; just too much stuff to list.
Q A Q A
: When did you first join a band?
: At art college – a strange hybrid of folk and jazz: two acoustic guitars, two vocalists, electric flute, soprano sax and upright bass. I wrote all the material. And, after a break of 20 years, or so (career, family etc), I put a (3-piece) band together again in the mid-90s. : Where have you been performing recently?
: We’ve had a fairly busy summer of small festivals, including an afternoon main stage appearance at the lovely Wychwood festival in early June, and a few more to come before the summer is out.
Q A
: How can you be contacted?
: I am best contacted via email: stafford@stafforduk.co.uk

Performanze Dance School School, is celebrating thier 10 year anniversary! In the early years classes were held in church halls, then in 2014 the main studio located in Watlington, Oxfordshire opened and upgraded to a bigger site in 2015 maintaining satellite classes in neighbouring villages.
Set in the rural village locations of Watlington, Chalgrove and Crowmarsh Gifford classes attract
local budding young and mature dancers alike. Over the last ten years Performanze has flourished; consisting of some wonderful children and their parents, and open to new starters who are always made very welcome. The ethos of Performanze is to provide something for everyone. Performanze has flourished since conception and offers an amazing range of dance from ‘Mummy and Me’ classes aimed at little ones and their mums, regular dance classes for examinations, fun classes for those looking for exercise and to make new friends to ‘Elite Squad’, for those wishing to train further and perform. Each child is supported at their particular level and helped to achieve their own personal goals through creativity, co-ordination and building of self-confidence. Top this off with 100% success rate in examinations for the last ten years too it is so easy to see why we are proud of our dancers and dance school, Performanze! This year further amazing events are being planned including 45 young local dancers performing at the Royal Albert Hall! Leisure
Welcome...
As I write this currently sat on the beach in what has been called the ‘English Heatwave’ I’m sure you have all been engrossed in sports over this summer holidays. Whether it started with the Euros, Wimbledon or the Olympics.
This
summer our courses at Chinnor Pavilion have been enjoyed by over 250 children from Stokenchurch, Chinnor, Thame, Aston Rowant, Brill and many more which is fantastic to see people from outside the village of Chinnor coming to enjoy our fantastic range of courses on offer.
followed by a hot food basket for dinner - both at the Chinnor Pavilion. Over the coming months we will be introducing the CWSS Academy (more details to follow) as well as a selection of Saturday morning and weeknight sessions as well. So lots still to come from CW Soccer Schools.
Now the summer holidays have come to a close that is not the end of courses for us. October half term we once again have a week long soccer camp, as well as our continued Friday evening Soccer & Supper sessions which consist of an hour of footballing fun
Alongside all of our upcoming courses we are also part of the Chinnor Pavilion Summer Festival on Sunday 4th September. Come down and see us as we have some great activities lined up with some great prizes.
TEAM GB REIGN VICTORIOUS AT RIO 2016 As I mentioned earlier this summer has been one for sport and what a fantastic few months for Team GB. Over the course of the event Team GB have broken records and made history in a number of events and as a team. With Olympic champions in tennis, golf, gymnastics, cycling and sailing – the team’s directors hailed national lottery funding and the legacy of London 2012 for the Rio gold rush. Which has seen some sports gain more funding and investment with others having to settle with what they have or lose out on money. For a small country we certainly do ourselves proud. Just look at the Trott/Kenny relationship, between them they currently have enough medals to place 13th on the medal table - what great assets these people are to have involved in British sport! Moving aside from the Olympics the new Football season is now underway with Premier League teams and Football League teams looking to get the season off to a good start by securing those all-important 3 points. Already we have seen some great goals, interesting results and the usual drama that comes from the top flight of the game!

the white house goes full circle... The White House Beauty and Holistic Health Clinic has been a feature in Thame since 1990, but having moved premises a couple of times over the last decade, it is now returning to its original location on East Street in Thame, and the building is currently undergoing a big renovation. The White House team has also changed somewhat over the last 26 years, but now working as an awesome foursome, Amanda Supple, Jen Webster, Gemma Hildreth and Rhiannon Griffiths have been a strong and consistent team since 2009, offering a wide range of beauty and holistic health treatments. + Amanda Supple - Beauty Therapist As the original founder owner of The White House, Amanda has many loyal local clients who will remember her first opening her doors to the East Street building, and will be returning to see her there again in September! Amanda specialises in anti ageing facials including Caci, specialised waxing, and holistic treatments. + Jen Webster - Bowen Therapist Joining The White House in 2008, whilst still working as an operating theatre sister, Jen made the transition to full time Bowen Therapist in 2010. Bowen Therapy is a gentle hands on technique, introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. It works with the body's own healing systems, encouraging the body to make the changes it needs, using rolling movements at precise points on the body. Jen has experience in treating acute and long term conditions from back pain to chronic fatigue, hormonal issues, migraine, asthma and more, in babies through to athletes and the elderly.
+ Rhiannon Griffiths - Acupuncturist Completing the current team line up, Rhiannon joined the White House in 2009, having been a client of Amanda's as a teenager, 20 years ago! Acupuncture is a form of Chinese Medicine that focuses on harmonising the mind, body and emotions. It seeks the root cause of illness, and addresses that by balancing internal energy known as Qi, using ultra thin needles the width of a human hair in specific acupuncture points along channels of the body. Rhiannon sees patients for a variety of conditions including stress, anxiety, exhaustion or when they don't feel quite themselves. For further information, or to book an appointment, please contact the individual practitioners directly. The Ear Bud Epidemic Little Ear Buds - Big Trouble
What is an Ear Bud?
Well you don’t have to look very far to see one - they are every- where. It is becoming a rare occasion to see a teenager that isn’t ‘plugged in’. Ear buds, ear phones, headphones, Blue-tooth® devices - they’re everywhere today - plugged into mobile phones, iPods®, MP3 players, computers, tablets, and more. They’re used by kids, teens and adults of all ages; and provide private listening in schools, gyms, at home, in the workplace - just about everywhere people spend time. For decades, scientists have looked, almost exclusively, at the loss of hair cells as an indicator of hearing loss. But a study released by the Acoustical Society of America reports a “hidden hearing loss”.
ability drops dramatically. So, hair cells may be completely intact but hearing still lost if the nerve synapses are damaged. The problem is, these little portable speakers are causing hearing damage at an alarming rate. What makes this even more disturbing is that hearing loss is not reversible. And, the longer it goes unrecognised and untreated, the faster it progresses.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School’s Eaton Peabody Laboratory learned you can lose up to 90 percent of your cochlear nerve fibres - without losing the ability to detect a tone in quiet. But once background noise is introduced, hearing
•
You can listen to music at a softer volume, for a longer time. Follow the 60/60 rule when wearing ear buds. Keep your volume below 60%, and limit your listening to under 60 minutes per day.
•
Wear ear-muff style headphones ideally with noise cancelling ability.
•
Wear custom-made ear buds so the tighter fit allows you to listen at lower volumes.
•
Consider bone-conduction hearing devices to minimise direct exposure and to enjoy keeping the ears clear and open and much safer when walking around as you can still hear traffic etc.

Just how do ear buds damage hearing?
The ear buds commonly used with iPod® or MP3 players sit within the ear canal. This puts the audio signal closer to your inner ear the equivalent of boosting it by as much as nine decibels. Nine decibels is substantial, when you consider that anything over 85 decibels can cause hearing damage. This coupled with the length of time they are worn without interuption is causing significant hearing problems for a huge group of the population and from a very young age.
Here are some suggestions to protect your hearing when enjoying a personal listening device:
At Aston Hearing we believe it is our job to educate children and teenagers. Most have no idea that hearing doesn’t come back once it’s gone. We offer a special hearing screening for children and young adults that will help us to ascertain potential future problems directly related to over exposure to noise.
Why not call for more information on how we can all help the next generation value the hearing much, much more.

The Snowman – by Jo Nesbø
A bit of a different novel this month and a genre that is growing
in popularity these days: Nordic noir. ‘The Snowman’ is about as far from Miss Marple as you can get and will appeal to fans of Stig Larsson’s ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’. Nesbø is the creator of Harry Hole, an ex-alcoholic detective from Oslo. Hole became famous when he was sent to Australia to help solve the murder of a Norwegian citizen. This sealed his reputation upon his return to Norway: a country lacking in serial killers. Until the events of ‘The Snowman’.
In this, the seventh Harry Hole book, women start to go missing from the Oslo area. They all have one thing in common: they are all married. In each case there doesn’t seem to be any reason why these women would go missing. Marital status alone is not enough to make a connection but in these snowy regions of Northern Europe there is one more similarity between the cases. In each case a snowman appears at the murder scene. This is an engrossing novel which draws you, not only into the case, but into Hole’s life in the capital of Norway. As in all of Nesbø’s novels, the city of Oslo and the surrounding areas come to life almost as if they were characters in their own right. Hole is far from a hero, his character flaws are ever present and conflict between him and his colleagues is a common theme. As with many novels in this genre life is shown, warts and all, and it makes for a novel that is dark, bleak, alien, and yet one you will struggle to put down. Review by Willow Coby

It is believed that cider existed as long ago as Roman times, but its popularity in the UK stems from just after the Norman Conquest. The UK has the highest per capita consumption of cider and the largest cider producing companies. Cider is the thirst-quenching choice for many on a long hot summer’s day. Ciders range from sweet to dry and can be cloudy amber in colour, brown or even clear liquids. Modern mass-produced varieties appear similar to sparkling wine whereas traditionally brewed varieties tend to be darker and stronger. A lot depends on ingredients and technique. Historically West Country varieties use cider apples and a pressing process which involves layers of straw rather than cloths. In Eastern Counties it is more usual for a variety of eating and cooking apples to be used. Scrumpy is one of the most famous forms of traditional cider. It is usually cloudy, has little or no carbonation, and a high alcohol content. When pears are used rather than apples the drink is known as Perry. Some of the big producers now have specific pear varieties and there are also many popular ‘fruit’ based contemporary brands which are created by adding other fruits to apple cider. Low alcohol versions are available meaning that cider can be enjoyed by everyone this summer.
