Hello Readers, Welcome to the September Edition of Look Local Magazine, our 5th Birthday issue! I can hardly believe that it has been five years since my father and I sat down with the idea of starting up my own business in readiness for the birth of my first born child. Fast forward to now and said child (pictured with me below) is about to start school and I am soon to give birth to my second baby. The last five years have been a whirlwind of up’s and down’s on both a business and a personal level but today I feel very proud of the local community publication that Look Local has become. I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years from my family and friends to my loyal advertisers and readers. I love receiving feedback about how much my little publication has helped my clients businesses grow and that’s a great testament to you, my readers, as you support your local businesses by continuing to shop locally. I chose this months front cover image of Brill Hill, by Victoria Timms of Brill Photography as I felt it was a stunning photo of celebration. Celebration of Look Local’s birthday, the seasons and the beautiful countryside that surrounds us. A big thank you to Victoria for shooting it. Please do visit her website www. brillphotography.co.uk and give her page a LIKE on Facebook. As always, this issue is bursting with articles and editorials and there is also many events taking place throughout September and early October including the fantastic Thame Food Festival, which this year has moved to its new location on Thame’s Showground. The event features a abundance of artisan food and drink producers as well as celebrity chef cooking demos, pop up restaurants and even a dog show. This years event is on Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October and tickets cost £5.00. Whilst on the subject of food, be sure to read my Food Review, page 30, after a recent visit to The Crown in Sydenham.

And until next month, enjoy reading

In the spotlight... New SEAT Ibiza 2017

MOTORING

Reviewed by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. Tweeting at @carwriteups

The all-new SEAT Ibiza is smartly dressed; it’s an angular car that is wider and lower than before. It cuts a dashing figure on the sporty, youth-focused motoring market.

A

nd that’s precisely what the Spanish car-maker wants; its whole goal is to capture the hearts and minds of younger drivers, or at least motorists who are young hearted. The Ibiza isn’t the speediest car in the supermini segment, but it really doesn’t matter. It’s still an awesomely effervescent machine with enthusiasm exuding from every aperture. But there are some perceptible transformations in the way the 2017 Ibiza drives compared with the withdrawing model. For example, the driving position is improved. You are seated more squarely, so your hands are more naturally coupled with the switchgear. Your feet feel more intuitively connected with the pedals, too. The SEAT’s steering is easy-going, but you don’t get as much response as you do in, say, the latest Ford Fiesta. Nevertheless, the all-new Ibiza has masses of ability, and because the machine is so light-footed, it delivers fun by the bucket-load. I spent most of my time at the car’s launch in the 1.0-litre TSI Ibiza FR - a turbo petrol three-cylinder engine with 95ps, or 115ps in my case. The smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, combined with turbocharged power means the new Ibiza never feels short of pull. The 0-62mph dash is completed in 9.3 seconds and the maximum speed is 121mph. Best of all, the SEAT is quiet, meaning it’s very laid-back to drive for lengthy periods. The strum of the three-cylinders is hardly perceptible, but when it is, the purr is engaging rather than enraging. Another upbeat point for the all-new Ibiza is how parsimonious it is to run. The FR 1.0 TSI 115PS I drove will manage an average of 60.1mpg, and it releases only 108g/km of CO2. The state-of-the-art 2017 SEAT Ibiza is also more realworld than before. Its latest platform makes the car wider, meaning there’s more elbow and shoulder room for four full-sized people. The car will even seat five, because you can get three small children seated on boosters in the back. The Ibiza’s boot has also expanded by 63 litres to 355 litres.

06

The all-new 2017 Ibiza’s cabin is peppy, yet practical, with coatings of soft plastic giving the SEAT a polished guise. Look closely, though, and there are some lowcost synthetics on the doors and the top of the dashboard, but these don’t pour water on the fire. That’s because the Ibiza’s splendid infotainment system kicks everything else in the cabin to the kerb. The eight-inch touch screen is heaving with features, such as sat-nav and Apple, Android and MirrorLink ability for legally using smartphones. SEAT has gone the extra mile when it comes to the 2017 Ibiza. It’s athletic, entertaining, roomy, safe and cheap to run. It’s inexpensive to fork out for, too. The Ibiza is undoubtedly one of the most appealing superminis around.

GET THE LOOK This autumn’s dark, earthy trend creates

hibernation heaven. By Jade Coulon, Coulon Stone Ltd Unfortunately summer is almost behind us, and as daylight fades, so does the light and bright interior trends of months gone by. Instead, autumn/ winter 2017 welcomes dark, sultry tones. And not just blacks and greys, but the underbelly of earthy tones like swamp greens, rusty terracottas and muddy browns – ideal colours to curl up and hibernate to this winter.

If warm, dark and moody is your thing, we’ve got some ideas on how you can create this look in your home. 1. Dark green kitchen cabinets - There are all sorts of gorgeous dark green cabinets available now, in all sorts of styles including handless modern and traditional shaker. They look perfect paired with either a light marble or dark granite worktop, dark, glassy tiles, brass accessories and plenty of plants. 2. Wilderness inspired wallpapers - Bright green palm leaves and golden pineapples be gone, it’s the turn of foggy forests and misty lakes to cover our walls. To create a room so atmospheric, it could give you chills, pick out the dark colours from the wallpaper to match your furnishings – plenty of dark woods, blues and greens. 3. Terracotta returns - For everyone who held on to those terracotta tiles, you’ll be thrilled to learn that they’re making a comeback, and in a big way. We won’t just feel terracotta under our feet but the colour will cover walls, furniture and accessories. For a really on trend look pair your terracotta tiles with a dark wall colour and furniture. For more inspiration or assistance visit our website www.coulonstone.com or pop into our Stokenchurch Showroom.

Hard times are over in Bucks The water in the South East, specifically the Buckinghamshire area, is very hard – leading to, the dreaded limescale. That limescale build-up can cause an untold amount of damage to your home – damage you can see and damage you can’t see!

Hard Water

Soft Water

We all recognise unsightly limescale build-up in our kettle, scale on our taps, clogged shower heads and watermarked shower screens, but that’s just the damage we can see. Have you ever thought about the amount of limescale that might be in your waterusing appliances, making them run less efficiently and possibly even causing them to break down. Softened water will bring you and your family many benefits in day to day life.

Save time and money and live in luxury! Limescale removers are only a shortterm fix, they don’t tackle the cause, hard water. Save hours cleaning and discover the only long-term solution for limescale - soft water. It will prolong the life of your appliances. Many homeowners are unaware that hard water could be

16

causing daily damage to their washing machine, dishwasher, boiler and water heating systems reducing their efficiency and eventually may even cause them to break down. If you have never experienced the luxury of bathing in soft water, you will be amazed! Your skin will instantly feel silky smooth, and soft water can even help to alleviate eczema and dry skin conditions. Bubble bath, shampoos and detergents will also go so much further too!

Buy with confidence locally Based in Princes Risborough, The Soft Water Shop is an independent business with more than 35 years experience. Talk to their friendly team and they’ll happily recommend a water treatment solution that’s right for you, your home and your budget. They offer a personal service, free site visits and an installation service carried out by fully qualified engineers.

NEWS & EVENTS in our region Independent, Thame base insurance company celebrate 21 years in the business..

This month Sandra Tomes celebrates her twenty first year in

business! Sandra has been giving independent insurance advice to families and businesses since 1996 when Pearson Insurance Services first set up trading in Stroud. After a family move to Thame almost a decade ago, Sandra established her company office in Swan Walk and has been instrumental in helping untangle red tape for many local people ever since. ‘It’s a real honour to get involved with town projects, ensuring their safety from start to finish,’ says Sandra. ‘And, I particularly like difficult issues. Those that struggle to understand complex clauses should see my desk – it’s covered with cases we’re solving for customers.” With the accessibility of internet insurance companies, Sandra deserves congratulating for staying afloat in a fiercely competitive market. Having an expert on hand locally means that people are no longer inadvertently buying the wrong cover – simply to save time. The experience that Sandra has is demonstrated for every circumstance – she ensures there are no gaps in cover and enables clients to be cost-effective in the long term. ‘Being independent means we have access to the whole market, not just one company’, adds Sandra. ‘I am always surprised at the volume of policies that are counter-productive and glad to hear that we help people sleep at night, knowing they are insured for any eventuality... whatever happens!’ Pearson Insurance Services specialise in home insurance, cyber liability (hacking, ransomware etc), professional indemnity (cover yourself) and public liability (negligence). A: 7 Swan Walk, Thame T: 01844 260936 Jeannette Matelot of the Thame Skate Park Project found Sandra’s help invaluable, “Getting insurance was not easy but Sandra sorted it for us.’

Restore your health... The Bowen technique is a gentle hands on, non-invasive complementary therapy, which was introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. Bowen works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it needs. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes rolling movements over fascia, at precise points on the body. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used.

As a Bowen practitioner my job is twofold: 1.

To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better balance.

2.

To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health you want.

It is, however, not my job to dictate terms, but to provide options.

The law of Nature requires a balance of the following... •

Physical exercise and good posture, fresh air and sunshine, pure water and proper nutrition, proper sleep, relaxation, recreation.

Utopia? Sadly, this is rarely achieved as we all stray from the path and engage in practices that go against the Natural Laws. Suddenly the presence of pain emerges in our lives and becomes a reality, which comes in a variety of packages e.g. Back Pain, Neck pain, Headaches, Fatigue, Heart problems.

Generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking a drug or painkillers; however this is only a temporary measure at best and it may be more suitably treated by Bowen/NST therapy. Bowen Therapy works to correct the energy balance

which will involve working towards: reduction of pain levels, improvement in diet and general feeling of wellbeing. Over the last couple of months I have treated so many lovely and appreciative clients of all ages, with such a variety of presenting issues. My youngest at present is Josh, who is 4 and 1/2 and severally disabled. I see him weekly and whilst he can’t comment his parents and carers see an improvement in his sleep pattern and release of body tension. Many of my clients continue with maintenance treatment, therefore avoiding (for example) painful and debilitating back, feet, shoulder, hormone surges and migraines issues. I have seen clients with Bell’s palsy, Chronic breathing disorder, Fibromyalgia, Acute back pain, Painful feet, Chronic fatigue and Anxiety and recently a client trying to get some change to a painful shoulder to avoid medical intervention! In a few cases medical intervention has been necessary, in which I have had an input, and therefore have seen client’s pre and post operatively. Physical therapy alone, however, will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and proper hydration, all of which depend on the willingness of the individual, to whom I will advise accordingly.

Jen Webster Bowen | Advanced NST practitioner (BSc MBTPA CNHC reg) E: info@jenwebsterbowen.com | W: www.jenwebsterbowen.com T: 07768 188664

Bowen Therapy is not a substitute for medical advice and treatment.

Lipoedema

Health & Wellbeing

Spotting the signs

Are you one of those women whose legs keep getting bigger – no matter how much you diet and exercise? Do you have the “Fat” disease? Can you recognise Lipoedema? In this article, Nainesh Vasistha, therapist at Thame Therapy Clinic highlights the symptoms of this condition and how Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may help.

Lipoedema is an abnormal build-up of fat cells predominantly distributed in the lower body

which is estimated to affect up to 11% females in the UK. The diseased fat cells form a unique and unusual shape, normally from the waist down, to a clear and obvious line above the ankles in a bilateral, symmetrical shape. Symptoms include: tissue enlargement + oedema (swelling), pain, aching, sensitivity to touch, abnormal gait, muscle weakness, joint pain, mobility problems which can then lead onto severe obesity, chronic pain and difficulty with day to day living. For many patients, it can take decades to realise that they have lipoedema and due to a lack of awareness amongst healthcare professionals, patients can be constantly dismissed by the medical profession over the years and told that the excess fat ‘is their own fault’. Consistent lack of diagnosis can also lead to emotional problems and loss of self-esteem, especially as it is often inferred that the patient’s lifestyle may be a cause of the symptoms. If you have lipoedema, you could be more prone to getting lymphoedema – the distortion in body shape, especially around the ankles means that the lymph system struggles to drain excess fluid; for the same reasons varicose veins can appear; and knee pain can result due to the weight of the leg. There have also been cases of eating disorders leading to obesity and psychological problems. Once diagnosed, the main treatments available on the NHS currently are compression therapy in the form of tights or wraps to reduce fluid build-up, which sometimes accompanies lipoedema. Compression therapy will not reverse the adipose tissue enlargement of lipoedema, but may prevent the lipoedema worsening and decrease the risk of progression to lipolymphoedema.

What if you cannot bear wearing anything on your legs? Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is one of the four cornerstones of treatment. MLD is a very specific but gentle type of massage carried out by qualified specialists/ practitioners. MLD helps to reduce pain and discomfort and promotes physical and psychological functioning. Many patients also feel that they derive psychological benefits from the opportunity to relax. Education Focus

A helping Hand... Barely a day goes by without schools making the news in one way or another. Recent headlines have screamed: British Children bottom of the European League Table...and Crisis in the Classroom.

Is it any wonder that as parents we have never been more concerned about our children’s schooling? Many of us are so concerned that we are employing private tutors to help our children achieve their goals.

How do I know whether my child might benefit from private tuition? - Is your child struggling with course work? Are they stressed about certain lessons? Do they avoid certain subjects during homework sessions? - Does your child find course material too simple? Do they complain of boredom and does the teacher accuse them of being disruptive or a daydreamer? - Do you feel that your child is neglected by the system because they are neither special needs, nor especially gifted? If you answered yes to any of the above questions then your child might benefit from private tuition.

What sort of tutor should I choose? School is probably the best place to start. They know your child already and might be able to offer ‘in school’ help. Even if that isn’t an option good teachers will be happy to discuss what your child needs from a tutor. Some children require just a little extra attention and support with homework. Others benefit from learning study skills. Others might need to re-learn things they missed through absence or that they simply didn’t understand the first time around.

What do I look for?

It sounds obvious but you really need someone who can teach! Being specialised in a subject area is great but teaching skills are everything. A tutor should be able to relate to a child and explain things at his level. Once or twice a week for two or three months is a good starting point. After this time you should have a good idea how much tutoring is helping your child.

What questions should I ask?

- Check professional references and qualifications. - Ask to see a copy of their CRB (criminal Records Bureau) check - Ask about any career gaps on their CV - If the tutor is employed at a school you can ask for a reference from the head teacher. - Introduce them to your child so you can see how they relate to each other - The right tutor can boost results but more importantly they can also boost a child’s confidence and self esteem.

Restaurant Review

The Crown, Sydenham

If you’re looking for quality fine dining combined with a relaxed, pub atmosphere then look no further than The Crown in Sydenham which has recently been taken over by new Landlord & Lady Will Shaw and Pippa Simpson.

Located opposite the 12th century church in the quaint, countryside village of Sydenham, is

gastro pub, The Crown. Dating back to the 1600s, diners and drinkers alike will be charmed by its apparent old world features such as the hand-carved beams, low rise ceiling and warming fireplace, coupled with the friendly welcome you receive from new landlord and lady, Will and Pippa, when you enter the premises. Having taken over the reins late last year, the young couple, whose background is in hospitality, have given the establishment a bit of a revival with a new menu, increased drinks offering and themed food & drink events as well as a garden refurbishment, which is put to great use during the summer months by locals and guests from across the Chilterns.

Having perused the Food & Drinks menu on a recent visit, which included a great mix of good old fashioned pub classics combined with world fusion dishes, my taste buds were looking forward to the fine dining experience ahead. Having always been a sucker for a Scotch Egg when I saw this Starter it was a winner for me. However, this was no ordinary scotch egg, instead of the usual (and somewhat heavy) sausage meat, this egg was encased in fluffy, delicately flavoured smoked haddock which once cut into, a perfectly cooked yolk oozed out. This was complimented by a dusting of pepper and a coriander mayonnaise. My fellow diner chose a deliciously flakey “Caramelised Red Onion Tart Tatin with Wild Mushrooms, Tarragon Crisp & Goats Cheese Crumb”. The crumbly base of the tart almost melted in the mouth whilst the wild mushrooms added a smokey oak like taste to the sweet onion and creamy cheese topping – a real treat for the palette. In keeping with my light starter, I fancied an equally refreshing and summery main so opted for the waiters recommendation of ‘Pan roasted, Coconut & Chilli marinated Chicken Supreme

Food & Drink on an Oriental Salad of Coriander, Red Onion, Chilli, Coconut and Red Cabbage’ which was inspired by the chefs worldly travels. It didn’t disappoint! An explosion of flavours worked their way around my mouth with every bite. After much deliberation, my colleague went for “Duck Breast with Dauphinoise Potatoes, Tender Stem Broccoli & Celeriac Puree”. The duck was cooked to perfection, just the right amount of pinkness with a slight crisp to the skin and the creamy potatoes and al dente vegetables added another dimension to the dish. Dessert was a sharing affair, of “Chocolate marquise – with a chocolate truffle, Chantilly cream, and a tuille biscuit” and a slice of “Lemon Tart with Fresh Raspberry Coulis and crumbled Meringue” as we couldn’t choose from what all sounded like heavenly creations. Presented on cut slate, these indulgent puds looked like works of art, almost too good to eat! I said ‘almost’ too good to eat – they were devoured in seconds – need I say more! It’s very clear that the chefs have a real flair for presentation as well as flavour, coupling the best seasonal ingredients together with good quality, wholesome food resulting in truly mouth-watering dishes. We will definitely be returning, especially when we know the Gin inspired menu is back! For further information about The Crown’s menus and forthcoming events, which include ‘SYDFest’ - an all day Live Music extravaganza, complete with a BBQ, over 25 local ales & ciders and a Gin & Prosecco bar - visit www.crownsydenham.com.
