They come in many different finishes for modern or rustic looks. TILES, 1 PIECE, 2 PIECE? When you’re ordering a stone hearth, you may be asked if you want one piece or two. This is to prevent the stone from getting too hot and buckling. However, with stoves, one piece of stone cut in to a t-shape and slotted in to the recess won’t buckle. For open fires which are closer to the stone, two pieces are recommended. HOW THICK? A minimum of 20mm thickness is recommended for the hardest materials like slate and granite. For slightly softer stones, marble and limestone, we recommend 30mm. Hearths can be flush to the floor or built on an upstand. COLOURS AND DESIGN OPTIONS? NEWS & EVENTS in our region A race with a twist! Try the Thame Urban Race...
Sunday 9th September sees a unique opportunity to explore the streets, alleys and parks of Thame in an adventure race for all the family. Thames Valley Orienteering Club (TVOC) and Thame Town Council are organising the Thame Urban Race and no experience is necessary to take part.
It’s an urban orienteering event, with several courses of varying length and difficulty, suitable for families and children, from 1km to 5km. There are also longer courses for the more competitive and for runners looking for a new challenge, up to 8km. It’s a race with a twist; the twist being that there is no set route to the courses. Each competitor is given a special orienteering map, showing a series of checkpoints. The challenge is to visit all the checkpoints around Thame, choosing your own route between each one. Each checkpoint is marked by a flag and an electronic timing chip is used to record progress. “Most people don’t realise that orienteering is a competitive running sport,” says Mike Shires, from TVOC. “However, orienteering really is a sport for all. Our events attract keen runners as well as plenty of families who come along for a jog or walk around a course. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to have a run while the children tackle a junior course. At Thame, we’ll also have a special junior course too around Cuttlebrook Nature Reserve which is safe for young children to have a go.” TVOC is Clubmark accredited and has around 300 members from Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley. The club was recently awarded Orienteering Club of the Year and organises around 35 events per annum, ranging from local events for 150 competitors to larger regional events with over 1,000 runners. To have a go at Thame, just turn up to Thame Town Hall between 9.30am and 11.30am. There will be plenty of help on hand for newcomers. The cost is £7.50 for the shorter courses and £13.50 for longer courses, including a special map of Thame to keep as a souvenir. On Sunday 9 September, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are hosting a traditional style summer fete at their idyllic premises nestled among the idyllic Chiltern hills in Saunderton.
There will be food and drink, traditional entertainment, boat swings, a helter skelter, Punch and Judy show, a band, doggy demos and more. Four-legged friends welcome. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults, £3 for children (5-16yrs) and £3 for concessions (over 65s & students). Or you can purchase a family ticket for £15 (2 adults, up to 4 children). News & Events APPEAL for Oxfordshire Memories and Objects from the Second World War to the 1970s from the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum...
T
he Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum (SOFO) in Woodstock is planning a new 1930-1970s Oxfordshire exhibition and is now appealing to the public for help filling new displays with local stories and mementos. The new exhibit will link the home front and domestic experience more closely with the county’s military history and tell the stories of the women and children living in close proximity to the various military bases and locations that feature so heavily in the area’s history. One example is a child’s necklace given to a young Oxfordshire girl during the Second World War, having been made by a German POW held at a local camp. Local POWs often made toys and children’s playthings to sell for a little extra cash. The necklace was kindly donated to the museum by Rosemary Warner from Witney. A set of dog-tags also planned to feature in the upcoming exhibition form a reminder of one young man’s time in the Stalag Luft III camp, now in Poland, and infamous as the location of ‘The Great Escape’. Sgt Leslie Mitchell from Woodstock was captured aged just 19 after his plane came down in 1940. He remained a prisoner until 1945. All the time he kept in touch with home, and the letters sent to him provide a fascinating insight into war-time Oxfordshire. On the Sunday, Candice will be joined on stage by Matt Evers, her partner of Dancing on Ice fame during the last series, and they will be doing a joint demonstration called…’Dancing on Icing Sugar!’ Returning to the festivals already packed programme are Bell Kitchens who will be running free pizza making workshops

This will be topped off by several interactive demonstrations from the Clementi team themselves who are coming over from Italy, especially for the event to show what these ovens can really do! Alongside will be some other demonstrations revealing the many different ways you can cook using one of their intriguingly named products - the Big Green Egg! This is not only a barbecue for grilling steaks and sausages, but a smoker, a roaster and a pizza maker and even a baker. And just like last year they will be joined by Farmer Lou - their preferred meat supplier - who will be offering delicious sausage rolls and serving up a storm with their hog roast. So obviously, as is always the case at Thame Food Festival there will be sampling galore! Another festival favourite returning this year is Britain’s leading Hotel, Spa and Country Club, Stoke Park where Award Winning Executive Chef Chris Wheeler will be joined by guest Chefs as they demonstrate cooking signature dishes using Quality Standard Mark Beef and Lamb. Chris will also be promoting his debut cookbook, The Ginger Chef ‘ Served Up’, plus he can be seen on the Magimix Demonstration Stage on Saturday 29th September – Twice! This is just one of the plethora of interactive demonstrations that the festival promises to offer. There will also be opportunities to meet the chefs and bakers and possibly even get some book signings, such as Candice Brown’s very first book, Comfort (Ebury Press) which was released in July 2017. In addition the festival is extending; featuring a wide variety of activities and shopping experiences. There is a dog show by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, many children’s activities by Thomley, demonstrations by the WI at Denman College, plus a festival first for the Humble Country company. Dreamt up and brought to life by 4 local ladies, this large marquee will be home to a hand picked collection of unique kitchenalia and enticing vintage pieces that will be sure to tempt and inspire countryfolk and urban dwellers alike. All this will be further enhanced by the fabulous Festivales bar, botanical Gin Garden, plus a complete programme of live music on a dedicated stage. Visitors are also advised to come with an empty belly ready to be filled with the culinary delights of the artisan food suppliers and hot street food stalls of which there are so many to choose from - you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Bowen technique is a gentle hands on, non-invasive complementary therapy, which was introduced to the UK from Australia in 1992. Bowen works with the body’s own healing systems. Rather than ‘making’’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise and make the balancing changes it needs. With fingers and thumbs the Bowen practitioner makes rolling movements over fascia, at precise points on the body. No hard tissue manipulation or force is used.
As a Bowen practitioner my job is twofold: 1.
To initially address your pain and / or address your pain and the issues you present with moving you to better balance.

To assist in guiding you to achieve the level of health you want.

Utopia? Sadly, this is rarely achieved as we all stray from the path and engage in practices that go against the Natural Laws. Suddenly the presence of pain emerges in our lives and becomes a reality, which comes in a variety of packages e.g. Back Pain, Neck pain, Headaches, Fatigue, Heart problems.
Generally the quickest way to silence a pain is by taking a drug or painkillers; however this is only a temporary measure at best and it may be more suitably treated by Bowen/NST therapy. Bowen Therapy works to correct the energy balance
which will involve working towards: reduction of pain levels, improvement in diet and general feeling of wellbeing. Over the last couple of months I have treated so many lovely and appreciative clients of all ages, with such a variety of presenting issues. My youngest at present is Josh, who is 4 and 1/2 and severally disabled. I see him weekly and whilst he can’t comment his parents and carers see an improvement in his sleep pattern and release of body tension. Many of my clients continue with maintenance treatment, therefore avoiding (for example) painful and debilitating back, feet, shoulder, hormone surges and migraines issues. I have seen clients with Bell’s palsy, Chronic breathing disorder, Fibromyalgia, Acute back pain, Painful feet, Chronic fatigue and Anxiety and recently a client trying to get some change to a painful shoulder to avoid medical intervention! In a few cases medical intervention has been necessary, in which I have had an input, and therefore have seen client’s pre and post operatively. Physical therapy alone, however, will not always provide the perfect solution: ongoing clinical work often goes hand in hand with emotional and nutritional support and proper hydration, all of which depend on the willingness of the individual, to whom I will advise accordingly.

increasing number of children are currently being labelled with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD’s), attention deficit disorders (ADD & ADHD), dyslexia, dyspraxia, auditory, visual & sensory processing disorders etc. Many struggle meanwhile with non-specific difficulties such as classroom learning, movement control, social interactions, concentration and even emotional maturity. Most ‘labels’ have a medical reference, which some people find helpful, however the terms merely describe a set of symptoms. As a Neural Developmental Therapist, Jo Rodhouse, of Thame Therapy Clinic, sees these myriad of symptoms as an indication of developmental delay and very often there is a simple explanation which is the presence of ‘Retained Reflexes’.
What are Retained Reflexes and why do they have such an impact? In the womb and early stages of life, we are equipped with a number of reflexes that not only aid the birthing process but also serve to ensure the survival and safety of the newborn into early infancy, such as grasping and sucking. As the new-born develops, the brain begins to mature and take control, so these early reflexes are no longer needed and switch off. This is an essential stage of normal development. If, however, these reflexes fail to inhibit they can have a huge impact on appropriate function and a child may display immature patterns of behaviour – lacking appropriate emotional, social & behavioural responses and co-ordination issues. It may explain why a seemingly intelligent child struggles to learn and thrive as others do.

What signs of retained reflexes would I have seen as a parent? Evidence is often seen at the early key stages of development when the child has deviated from the norm such as difficult or delayed birthing, feeding or latching issues, failure to crawl, delayed teething or speech, being easily startled, unusual sleep patterns, fussy eating, thumb suckers, toe-walkers, late in becoming ‘dry’ or bedwetting. As a consequence of delayed development we can see poor impulse control, sensory overload, emotional and social immaturity, anxiety and fears, anger and frustration, motion sickness, poor balance & coordination, easily distracted with poor concentration & focus, an inability to adapt well to change. The most common feedback I receive from parents is that children are simply failing to thrive or ‘I could always tell something wasn’t quite right’ – after all there is no better expert than a parent!
What is the treatment? I offer non–intrusive, drug free Neural Stimulation Programmes of either skin stimulation techniques, movement exercises or an auditory stimulation programme which are performed at home, normally twice a day and should take no longer than 5 minutes. We then review progress and update the programme on a 6/8 weekly basis. In the spotlight... New Range Rover Sport PHEV Review

Electric and hybrid cars are all the rage, so to make sure it’s not @carwriteups missing out on this shift towards ‘greener’ motoring, Land Rover has got in on the act. It’s had to really, as the brand is revered by many and, as a result, it is perhaps expected to lead by example.
A
s well as the launch of Range Rover model plugins, the British marque has ushered in the 2018 Range Rover Sport PHEV. Like its larger sibling, the Sport has a P400e badge stuck on it. The letters and numbers represent the blend of electric and petrol propulsion, and the clout on offer, which is just over 400 PS. The power is produced from a 300 PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplant and an electric motor producing 85kW. The electric shot in the arm means it is capable of a claimed 101mpg. But even more significant is the CO2 figure of 64g/km and the savings that brings for company car users. Behind the wheel, the Sport is sprightly and hushed around town on pure electric power. You can squeeze up to 31 miles out of the SUV before the electric charge runs out. But it only takes 2 hours 45 minutes to refill the battery cells with a fast charger. If you haven’t got access to one of those, then it takes almost a day’s work in the office (seven and a half hours) to replenish with a 10-amp standard charger. Still, that’s okay if you live close to work, and you’re determined to drive in electric-only mode. Plug in at 9am, and by 4.30pm you’ll be ready to rock again. Alas, the added bulk of the plug-in unit means the combustion engine needs to work hard - and it’s not the most polished powerplant. Therefore, when you put the pedal to the metal, the cry of the engine seems out of place with the opulent environment of the vehicle. Mind you, considering the Range Rover P400e Sport is a big SUV, it still manages to offer a decent mix of dexterity and ride comfort. The six-speed auto ‘box is slick, and the 4x4 system makes light work of nonblacktopped terrain.

Looks-wise, it’s softer on the outside, and Land Rover has given it some fetching LED headlights. Inside, the car is roomy and attractive with a new, intuitive, double-screen infotainment system. What’s more, if you like playing with gadgets, you’ll spend ages waving your hand backwards and forwards to operate the panoramic roof’s sunblind automatically. Compared with the rest of the lineup, this model costs more than a diesel-powered 3.0-litre V6. That’s fine if you use the electric mode around town and want to save tax. However, if you munch motorway miles regularly, then you may still be better off with the oil-burner.
