This month I’d like to say some thank you’s as we celebrate the publication’s 7th Birthday! Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years from my family and friends to my team of cheerful deliverers, my wonderful readers and loyal advertisers. I have been working with many of you on your advertising, marketing and printing since day 1 which is a great testament to how successful your campaigns have been. It makes me feel very proud that I have helped promote your businesses to the masses and that you are seeing real results. It’s great that together we are all supporting our local economy by continuing to shop locally! This ties nicely into a very British initiative, which is celebrated every autumn at the same time as harvest festival, British Food Fortnight. Since its beginnings in 2002, the two weeks from 21st September - 6th October, has become THE opportunity for those who work in any aspect of food and drink, to come together and promote the benefits of buying and eating from our home produced British larder. And as consumers we can do our bit by buying, eating and cooking regional food. A great place to start is the Thame Food Festival which takes place during these 2 weeks and features an abundance of artisan food and drink producers from our region and across Britain. For more information on how to get involved in the campaign, visit www.lovebritishfood.co.uk and if you’re looking for a great local place to eat out I can personally recommend Coluco in Thame (or Tring). Read my review after my recent visit on page 20/21. As always, this issue is full of interesting articles and adverts from local businesses. If you’ve got a passion for antiques then turn to our back cover for information about four exciting auctions taking place at The Swan in Tetsworth. For those who need to calm their mind turn to page 26 for new class dates from our regular meditation columnist, Sophie Lacey of Linden Tree Meditation. Until next month, enjoy reading...

GET THE LOOK K
The qualities and features of stone surfaces....
itchens are ranked as the most used room in the house. It’s where we cook and eat the meals we love, and make memories with our family and friends. As it’s our most used room in the house, it makes sense that according to a study by Lloyds Bank, it’s also the most valuable, with people investing most in fixtures, fittings and gadgets for their kitchens. This includes the worktops. However with so many materials to consider when choosing a new kitchen worktop, it can be overwhelming. With our 25 years of experience, we’ve put together a simple guide to stone surfaces. Granite – A very hard, natural stone. It’s non-porous, making it hygienic and stain resistant. Scratch and heat resistant, you can put pots straight from the hob or oven on to it. There are also vast design opportunities, for example, the shiny sapphire coloured Lemurian Blue, or the sandy grey and greens of Bianco Romano. It’s easily cleaned with a gentle, neutral, surface cleaner, avoid heavy bleaches and harsh chemicals. Marble – An elegant and timeless natural stone. Heat resistant but slightly more porous than granite so is vulnerable to some staining, for example spices and beetroot, and some scratching. If treated with care, marble can look beautiful for many, many years. Don’t use household cleaning products or bleaches on your marble top, they irritate the stone making it more susceptible to staining and scratching. Instead, we recommend using Dry Treat’s ‘Rejuvenata Spray’ which not only cleans your marble gently, but contains a small amount of sealer to enhance the protection of your worktop. Limestone – A sedimentary rock, composed mainly of skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral and molluscs. Generally limestone is known for being a softer stone, but some can be very hard. For example, Wild West Green from America, is non-porous, heat, stain and scratch resistant. Jura Blue and Jura Beige from Germany are similar to marble in their durability. Clean limestone similarly to marble. Composite Quartz – A manmade, durable surface made from crushed up stone held together by resin. They come in a huge range of colours and patterns, including imitation marbles, and each slab is uniform in look, compared to a natural stone. They are heat and stain resistant and largely scratch resistant too. Clean it in the same way that you’d clean granite. For kitchen worktop inspiration visit our website or showroom (in Stokenchurch) where you can look through materials and take samples home with you.

A taste of Music at this years Thame Food Festival... After the wonderful success of the live music stage at Thame Food Festival last year, this fabulous feature is set to return again. The dedicated stage will be hosted and presented by the First Thursday Music Club and Thame Town Music Festival and sponsored by Milk & More. With headline act – United Vibe – fresh from their experience on the most recent X Factor series
joining on the Sunday.
Through-out the weekend the Milk & More stage will host a variety of local and national musicians. The nation’s largest milk and grocery doorstep delivery service, Milk & More, will also have an area at the festival where visitors can find out more about their passion, encouraging people to eat well and live sustainably. Including their guiding principles to champion smaller suppliers and bringing the very best of products right to the doorstep including the milk in the iconic, reusable glass bottle! With plastic-free ranges to suit all diets they will be showcasing just some of the delights that can now be ordered and delivered for free, all before breakfast. United Vibe, featuring our very own Thame local Elliot Horne, will be sponsored by FestivAles and will be performing on Sunday 29th September in the afternoon. The group were brought together through the X Factor 2018 series, which saw Robbie Williams hand selecting the five boys to form a brand new UK boyband. They made it through to the live finals of series 15 after wowing pop legend Robbie at his home in L.A. Post their performance at Thame Food Festival there will be an opportunity to meet and greet the band (by ticket only). As Lotte Duncan, Patron and Organiser of Thame Food Festival said, “This area last year was just wonderful. People just loved the opportunity to chill out and enjoy the live music, so we thought we would make it bigger and better this year. And what better than finishing with United Vibe! It’s going to be perfectly sandwiched between the FestivAles Pop Up Pub and Botanical Gin Garden, with an area of covered and uncovered seating surrounded by the delights of the Street Food Market. So, the ideal spot to stop, have a drink, tuck into some food, relax and enjoy the music.” As well as the music, a myriad of demonstrations will be taking on the Magimix main stage including Alex Hollywood, Briony May, Chris Wheeler and Jane Devonshire to name just a few! Not to mention book signings and other demonstrations galore on featured stalls as well as an exclusive interview with our nation’s finest, Mary Berry. And of course, across both days, there will be a plethroa of wonderful artisan producers, street food stalls, pop-up pubs and yummy food sampling. Location: Thame Show Ground Location Dates: Saturday 28th September | Sunday 29th September Dates

COLUCO: A cosy Cafe retreat... If you’re looking for a cosy, serene place to catch up with friends over coffee and cake, host a breakfast meeting with a colleague or client, or just to refuel with the family after an afternoon shopping then head to Café & Wine Bar, Coluco. You won’t be disappointed!
An acronym for Coffee, Lunch and Cocktails, Coluco’s ethos is to offer an informal and affordable menu in a rustic, laid-back environment where everyone feels welcome and relaxed. Having recently visited the Tring Café, situated in one of the town’s beautifully traditional buildings on the High Street, we were greeted by a team of smiling faces before being shown around the venue. The ground level offers customers a light and airy space with its’ glass-roofed conservatory at the rear allowing natural light to flood in during the day before becoming a stargazer’s paradise by night. In contrast, down the spiral staircase it’s a more intimate affair with dimmed mood lighting and bare brick walls. This area provides the perfect haven for a romantic dinner for two or a quirky space to host a party (this area can be hired out for events). Upstairs is another homely room ideal for networking events or meetings. In keeping with the community spirited tone of the restaurant Coluco’s menu focuses on tapas style food and Sharer Boards, which floated our boats perfectly. We opted for the signature sharing platter consisting of a selection of cured smoked meats - including cold duck, which was a first for me – accompanied with a tongue tantalising pickled red onion chutney, red pepper humous, root vegetable crisps and a selection of warmed flat bread and toasted sourdough. The rest of the menu has something to tempt and satisfy no matter what time of the day, from all day brunch dishes such as Smoked Haddock Kedgeree or Pancakes with Blueberry Compote and Crème Fraiche through to seasonally changing evening dishes that take influence from around the world. We opted for the Halloumi Burger and the Roasted Chicken and Basil Salad, a Coluco’s spin on the classic Caesar, both of which delicious.

For the sweet tooth, a daily changing selection of cakes created by local bakers are on offer, which include vegan and gluten free options. I personally recommend the Vegan Carrot Cake, it tastes just as indulgent as a dairy version and I genuinely couldn’t tell the difference. To accompany the food, Coluco offer a curated choice of wines, craft beers, Champagnes, spirits and classic cocktails such as margaritas and martinis. Bookable Cocktail Master Classes and Wine Tastings are available for those wishing to learn the tricks of the trade from Coluco’s drinks experts. Coluco’s sister-venue in Thame is soon to under go a temporary refurbishment and will be introducing a new menu ahead of the launch of ‘The Cookery School’, which is due to open on the upstairs level of the building early next year. This is a completely unique concept to Thame and will offer families and friends an entertaining and educational hands-on cooking experience with skilful and highly trained chefs. Currently the upstairs Coluco Lounge can be hired for private parties, christenings, baby showers or just a cozy get together right in the heart of the beautiful market town. So if you haven’t visited Coluco yet, get yourself down to 50 High Street, Tring or 14 Butter Market, Thame - the team look forward to welcoming you!

CBD for Anxiety
CBD is one of over 100 compounds found in the cannabis plant and belongs to a class of ingredients called Cannabinoids. CBD is the major non-psychoactive component of Cannabis, meaning you won’t get high from taking it. It has been shown to provide serious relief from anxiety and is one of the most common reasons people turn to CBD. So how does it work and how could it help you? The human body has a system called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) that receives and translates signals it receives from cannabinoids in the body. The body produces some Cannabinoids on its own, which are called Endocannabinoids. The ECS helps regulate functions such as sleep, immune system responses and pain. CBD influences receptors in the body which are concerned with movement, coordination, sensory perception, emotion - such as stress and anxiety, memory, cognition, autonomic and endocrine functions and is also seen to reduce inflammation. There are quite a few commonly referenced studies that support CBD’s ability to reduce anxiety. It is considered safe, with no potential for abuse. VAPING: This provides the fastest effect and is why it’s a top choice among many CBD users. The trade-off with the vaping delivery method is that the CBD effects will wear off faster than with some of the other methods described below. Another benefit of vaping is it offers you more control over your individual dosing. You can vape one inhalation at a time and stop once you have reached the desired effects. Not everyone enjoys the act of smoking, even if it is with a vaporizer. Therefore other effective ways to take CBD for anxiety and experience reasonably fast relief are: TINCTURES: These come in liquid form and are taken sublingually under the tongue. Some come in a spray and many users find this to be convenient as opposed to the traditional eye dropper style pipette. The effect of this method (and capsules) lasts longer although it does take longer than vaping (about 30-90 min), to feel the benefits. CAPSULES: Can be taken just like a regular supplement or vitamin and come in tablet form. The benefits of both this method of consumption and Tinctures is that the effects tend to last longer so are an extremely popular way to take CBD and are known to be exceptional for anxiety relief. EDIBLES AND GUMMIES: A great way to get your regular dose of cannabidiol when you’re on the go. They are discreet, taste great and are a fun way to find some extended relief from anxiety. However they are the slowest form of effect so not ideal if you’re looking for rapid anxiety relief, but many do still feel a sense of relaxation once they have kicked in. If you’re interested in taking CBD for anxiety, keep in mind you may need to experiment with a few products and dosages before you get the relief you want. Don’t forget everyone reacts differently to CBD, so start off slowly. It is always advisable to speak to your doctor or a health care practitioner before beginning any supplemental programme, CBD included, because of possible drug interactions and your unique health situation.

We would like to invite you to join us at the clinic for our annual fundraising Pamper Day which this year will be in aid of Winston’s Wish supports children, young people and their families after the death of a parent or sibling. They give bereaved families the opportunity to talk about and make sense of what has happened, and to meet others in a similar situation. Our Pamper Days are usually very popular! Last year we raised £750 for Autism Oxford and we hope to raise a similar amount this year for Winston’s Wish through bookable treatments and a raffle. We will also be selling lovely refreshments, cakes, plants and books. The 15 minutes Pamper Sessions available on the day will include the following complementary therapies:Indian Head Massage, Back/Neck/Shoulders Massage, Reflexology, Zero Balancing, Deep Tissue Massage, Reiki, advice on Counselling, Sleep advice, Nutritional advice, Manual Lymphatic Massage and Hot Stones Massage.
Sessions cost £15.00 and we would encourage you to book your slot early by calling reception on 01844 215555 or come in personally to the clinic. You are also welcome to bring in book and plant donations or a small prize for the raffle, all of which will help us raise money for this worthy cause. All proceeds from this event will go to Winston’s Wish. For more information about the charity, visit www.winstonswish.org.
We look forward to seeing you all on the day – tell all your friends as well.

Back to School Bugs How to help keep them away... How does it happen? Your family has enjoyed a happy, healthy six week summer holiday, but within just days of returning to school your child comes down with a cold, or develops an itchy skin condition, or catches nits. Why, when they need to be settling into a new routine and you need to be back at work, do they suddenly get ill? Like it or not, children gathering in
schools is one of the main ways germs circulate in communities. Their immune systems are less mature, they tend to be in close contact, and they have ‘germy’ habits like sticking fingers or pencils into their mouths, so it is inevitable that they are going to come home with something nasty at some point. That said, most illnesses can be avoided if a few good practices are followed. Top of the list is to make sure that your child’s immunisations are all up to date, and that all family members have had a seasonal flu vaccination, where appropriate Prevention is definitely the best medicine. Next, make sure they wash their hands enough - and properly! The most common way to catch illness is through the mouth, eyes or nose after the hands have been in contact with infected surfaces. A thorough wash with soap and warm water to the back of the hands, in between the fingers and around the nails for 20 seconds (as long as it takes to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ twice!) - before eating or drinking, after a visit to the toilet, blowing their nose, or touching animals and waste, should be the minimum.
28
Teach your child ‘germ etiquette’. This means staying away from other children who may be sneezing or coughing, covering their own coughs and sneezes by using tissues that should be thrown away immediately, and avoiding head to head contact with others. If your child is older, warn them about sharing items such as lipstick, lip balm, make-up, razors, creams, lotions and other personal items such as towels and sports kit. There are some germ hotspots in schools, and cafeteria trays are one of them! One survey found that there were more bacteria per square inch on a cafeteria tray than there were on a toilet seat, probably because the trays don’t get cleaned as often. If your child drops food on a tray, they should throw it away! Finally, your child can build up their immunity by getting enough sleep and exercise, eating a well balanced diet that includes lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, and by drinking plenty of water. Take these preventative measures and hopefully going back to school will be a happy, healthy time for everybody!
