THE IMPORTANCE OF A WILL Having a will is arguably one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. Not only can a will legally protect your spouse, children, and assets, it can also spell out exactly how you would like things handled after you have passed on. A will gives you the opportunity to appoint guardians for your children which is the only way to ensure they are safeguarded if the worst were to happen to you. Making a Will - some important decisions, by Mike Bradley of Integrity Wills

A professional Will Writers job is to take your instructions and translate them into your Will,

creating a document which accurately reflects your wishes. The Will needs to be understood by your executors and most importantly, The Probate Court, to ensure that it is proved quickly, thus minimising any problems after your death which could cause delays leading to hardship for your loved-ones.

THE APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTORS You may choose to appoint a member of your family, a prime beneficiary or close friend to act as an executor. Remember, an executor can also be a beneficiary. If you do need to appoint a professional executor, you could opt for either a solicitor, chartered accountant or a Trust Corporation to act on your behalf.

APPOINTMENT OF GUARDIANS If you have children (under the age of 18) you will need to appoint guardians. It may be helpful to make at least one guardian a joint executor as they have a right to money from your estate to help towards the upbringing of your child. This amount can be restricted to a certain amount or could be left in a trust fund. If you have a child with additional needs, who are likely to require specialist care either at home or in the care of the Local Authority, a trust will be required to ensure adequate funds are available for their future.

PROPERTY How you hold your property will determine how it passes on after your death. As ‘joint tenants’ your share will pass on to the survivor automatically. If you wish to pass your ‘interest’ in the property to your children or others, you should hold your property as ‘tenants in common’. More in-depth information can be discussed with your consultant.

LONG COVID, FATIGUE AND ANXIETY By Andy Roscoe. The ongoing fallout from the Covid pandemic has thrown up many challenges to our physical and mental health.

Two of the main issues arising for people who have had covid are fatigue and anxiety. Anxiety is also an issue for many more who haven’t had covid but find their lives after lock down have become complicated and stuck. There is unfortunately no simple medical solution to fatigue or anxiety as the causes of both of these are multi-factorial and the seriousness of symptoms differs according to age, sex, obesity, the pre-existing state of health, and the severity of the viral infection. There is however a diagnosis and treatment protocol for fatigue and anxiety that is well documented in the field of Acupuncture. A lot of this has come from the experience of treating people with ME (or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) which is another similar malaise which is not particularly well suited to western medical diagnosis and treatment. Accompanying covid symptoms such as ‘fuzzy brain’, dry cough, and digestive irregularities are also well understood in Acupuncture. However, understanding viral issues and their symptoms is one thing, getting people better is another. No single treatment protocol can claim to have all the answers to long covid. Acupuncture treatment of both body and mind is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to an illness such as covid, but the recovery time may still be slow for those who have had significant pre-existing health concerns. If you would like to have a longer discussion of any of these issues then please contact Andy Roscoe at Thame Therapy Clinic: T: 01844 215 555 | M: 07722 381 250 Web: www.thametherapyclinic.co.uk Visit us: 23 Upper High St, Thame, OX9 3EX

A great day out for all the family! After a year’s absence and a number of date changes due to the Covid pandemic, the Abingdon Air and Country Show, to be held at Abingdon Airfield, Dalton Barracks, Oxfordshire, returns on Saturday 11th September and will feature a range of attractions for all ages.

This

year’s three-hour Flying Display is set to include, amongst others, the RAF Typhoon, BBMF Spitfire, Europe’s only airworthy B17 Flying Fortress ‘Sally B’, The Blades Aerobatic Display Team (4 Extra 300s flown by ex-RAF Red Arrows pilots), a ‘Russian’ Spitfire, a Hawker Hurricane Mk I and Richard Goodwin in his Muscle Pitts. Sadly, Europe’s only airworthy Westland Wessex helicopter is now ‘static’ only but has been replaced in the flying programme by a Westland Sea King. Classic Jets radio-controlled models will perform two displays. There could be up to 90 aircraft types flying into Ex-RAF Abingdon, all serviceability and weather dependant of course! Ground displays will include Arena Demonstrations of Falconry, Motorbikes, the Solent Stars Motorcycle Display Team and the Wallingford Dog Display Team, the Saints Sleds Dog Rescue Team, a Crafts Marquee, Live Music and Dance, Steam Engines and a Miniature Steam Railway, Classic and ex-Military vehicles including a parade by the Jensen Car Club who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary, various Trade Stalls, Amusements, food outlets and a bar, and much more!

Please note there are no retail sales outlets this year and this year’s event is currently ALL TICKET. The Car Parks open at 8am, entry into the showground is from 10am. And so, unfortunately it is back to Covid. We hope we have all met a period of stability but please be aware that the situation may change anytime between now and September 11th. Keep watching ours and the Government’s websites for updates on any situation that might affect the show. However, for your safety and for that of our volunteers we will be putting in certain measures to mitigate transmission of the disease. Please observe them when asked to do so, stay safe and enjoy a great day with us!

See you there! 2021 Sponsors

GET THE LOOK Updating Your Fireplace? Ideas to Inspire You By Coulon Stone

Does your fireplace inspire you to curl up all cosy on a cold winter night? Does

your fireplace create a serene space to unwind at the end of a long day? Does your fireplace make Christmas extra special hung with stockings and garlands?

All White Fireplace by McLaurin Interiors

Sleek Black by Coulon Stone

Arched by Eclectic Home

If your fireplace does none of these maybe it’s time to think about making some changes, and we have some ideas which use natural stones like marbles and granites to take your fireplace from dull to focal point this winter.

Arched Typically fireplace surrounds tend to be squarer in shape, maybe with some curved or smooth details. However arched marble or limestone fireplaces were popular in the UK in the Victorian era. This example of an arched fireplace in Carrara marble is softened by the grey brick inlay, compared to the typical cast iron insert which would have been used during the 19th century. We think it’s beautiful, incredibly elegant and perfectly pairs traditional design with a modern twist. For an elevated look replace the grey brick with herringbone style slips in Jura Blue limestone. All White An all-white fire surround will both warm and brighten your room. We love the one pictured which uses both a white Portuguese limestone with a Carrara marble insert and hearth. The mix of materials, along with the detailed surround and sleek insert is another example of both traditional and modern design working perfectly alongside each other. The fireplace is crisp, chic and show-stopping. It would work well amongst a light, neutral palette as in the photo, but could also be part of a bright and colourful scheme. Sleek Black Contrasting with the light and bright fireplaces of above is another favourite of ours, sleek black fireplaces. Whilst the one pictured, made from black granite, looks simple there are some small details which makes it look incredibly elegant. We love that the hearth is flush with the natural wood floor, it suggests the fire surround is part of the bricks and mortar of the house, it has always been there. We also love the floating mantel above which is made from the same material. The whole set-up creates a modern farmhouse look. If you’re looking for more fireplace inspiration visit our Instagram: @coulonstoneltd and Pinterest: @coulonstone pages, and our website where as well as our gallery you’ll also find information on our news page about where to begin and what things you need to think about when deciding to update your fireplace.

Home & Garden

Look locally over the garden gate with Lucie Giselle Ponsford

Hedges: who knew? This month I wanted to talk about hedges – glamorous I know but we all have (love or loathe) a hedge in our gardens or near them! How to best care for your hedge? Well if you haven’t already trimmed up your hedge now is the time to do so. There are two reasons to prune late summer.

The first reason: Although domestic properties are not subject to DEFRA

regulations, farmland is and the 1st of September is the first opportunity until March 1st for farmers to get out and cut their hedgerows. Why this late in the year? Well the nesting birds could, if the year has been hard, have a third clutch (What a lovely word, it evokes images of mothers clutching onto their brood. But in this instance it is from an old English word: ‘Clekken’ which means to hatch). This third attempt for birds to rear hatchling needs all the help we can give as the fledglings will be going through winter as much smaller birds. A two year rotation (pruning every other year) for native hedgerows, with berries that sustain through the winter is an extra boost to wildlife. You could consider this on internal hedges within your garden? However the ramble whipping branches that slap us from paths are less sociable to other local wildlife!

The second reason: is plant biology, now is the time that energy is being stored,

this is happening from the summer solstice but in earnest now as the season starts to change. Cutting from late summer till September will reduce rapid regrowth in the spring as there is less leaf factory available to store energy (you’ve cut it off!

With love, Lucie For more top tips on all things gardening join me (@Mimosa Design) on Facebook and Instagram. Email: info.mimosadesign@gmail.com | Call: 07737 286784.
