Mountain bikers raise funds for Stocksbridge charity

150 mountain bikers took part in the 2019 Steel Valley Ride, a 31 mile mountain bike challenge which took place on Saturday July 20. Established by local countryside management charity, the Steel Valley Project, the popular event is now in its third year and is seeing increased interest from both local mountain bikers and those willing to travel from other areas to ride on the bridleways around Stocksbridge. The route started and finished at Trek Sheffield Fox Valley, who gave up part of their shop for the event

HQ. They also worked closely with the Steel Valley Project to create promotional flyers and donate a free water bottle to all entrants along with a prize draw donation, won by Kevin Hilton. With mixed weather on the day – brilliant sunshine, plus strong winds and horizontal rain on the moors – and an unexpected route diversion due to a burning car on the road, riders got to sample a different experience to last year! The Steel Valley Ride is billed as a charity challenge, meaning that people entering range from the serious mountain biker to those just

starting out. Some finish the route in around 3 hours, with others taking a more leisurely approach over 6-7 hours. This type of event relies on the support received from local businesses and people in the community and the charity is keep to thank all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday to help create a great experience for those participating. Special thanks must also go to Liberty Speciality Steels and Dransfield Properties Limited (Fox Valley Shopping Centre) who provided parking facilities, Ride Holme mountain bike guiding who was the event sweeper

(collecting signs and giving morale support to those riding at the back) and Sport Sunday Event Photography who took some great images of the riders coming down Whinstone Lee Tor in the Peak District. Lots of positive comments have been received about the event, including “Thank you to all involved in organising such a good event, well signposted and great marshals.” and “Awesome day. Thanks to all involved.” Steel Valley Project Manager, Tom Newman, said “Thank you to everybody who helped make this year’s Steel Valley Ride such an en-

joyable day for everyone involved, including the enthusiastic cyclists, friendly volunteers, generous event partners and dedicated staff team.” “Another great event and well organised. Thanks again to everyone who makes it possible and organising it. Absolutely loved it!” For more information on the countryside management work carried out by the Steel Valley Project, please visit www.steelvalleyproject. org

HALLAM MP PLEDGES TO QUIT

He had previously said he planned to take time out to deal with “mental health and personal issues”. Then at the weekend, he said: “I’m not well and am in the process receiving medical help. I am not in any fit state to continue and nor would that be appropriate if I was.” Last week, Jared’s press chief Gareth Arnold took to O’Mara’s Twitter account and posted a number of critical comments before announcing his resignation. Mr Arnold said: “Sheffield Hallam deserves so much better than you,” and “You have wasted opportunities which people dare not to even dream of.” Mr O’Mara was elected as the Labour MP for the constituency in a shock result that saw former Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg voted out. He is currently an independent MP having quit Labour last year after he was suspended over alleged misogynistic and homophobic comments posted online.

SHEFFIELD Hallam MP Jared O’Mara has said that he will resign from his post in September following allegations from members of his staff. O’Mara, who was elected as a Labour representative in 2017, said: “Let everyone be assured I will be tendering my resignation via the official parliamentary procedure as soon as term restarts. Miss Jones further added: “Due to the schools success this has led to all of Deepcar St John’s girls futsal and football team now training at SWFC girls development centres whilst some also have joined local football teams such as Stocksbridge Park Steels. Several girls have been asked and currently play for Stocksbridge Cricket Club. Over half of the girls within the school over the past two years are now playing sports away from school for clubs and teams. In answer to the letter from Trev Long (Look Local July 18) regarding the increase in crime and anti social behaviour, it is the cuts in funding since 2010 by this Tory government which have led to this situation.

In response Trev Long, who wrote on behalf of EPRA

Got something to say?

Yes I am very satisfied with my GPs at the Middlewood practice. I wish however I could say the same for the pharmacy attached which since +Well took it over from the Co Op has gone downhill.

I want you to know that the trauma of watching your dog dying before my eyes on the floor of the bus on Tuesday evening has stayed with me. in customer service with long waits often and staff I sincerely hope that your lovely dog did not die doing their best not to notice you and acknowledge but she looked so ill that I can’t believe she made it. your presence. It was obvious that your dog was in great distress, suffering from extreme heat exhaustion and Alistair Nicoll shouldn’t have even been on that bus. Using whatever sense you may have had, what you should have done was hire a taxi and take her straight to the nearest vet, rather than on the bus on what I believe could have been her last journey.

A GUIDE TO LOCAL GOLF GOLF is a very popular sport in this area and it’s easy to see why - we are very lucky to have a number of fantastic golf courses in the area. It’s a sport that competitors of any ability can enjoy. It gets you out in the fresh air and players of any age can take part. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not utilise a standard playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. The game at the usual level is played on a course with an arranged progression of 18 holes, though

recreational courses can be smaller, often having nine holes. The modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland. The 18-hole round was created at the Old Course at St Andrews in 1764. Golf ’s first major, and the world’s oldest tournament in existence, is The Open Championship, also known as the British Open, which was first played in 1860 in Ayrshire, Scotland. This is one of the four major championships in men’s professional golf, the other three being played in the United States: The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the PGA Championship.

GOLF DAY AT STOCKSBRIDGE A SUCCESS BOLSTERSTONE Male Voice Choir’s annual Golf Day on Friday July 5 raised £2,000 for the Weston Park Cancer Charity and a substantial sum for choir funds.

The event at Stocksbridge Golf Club was favoured by good weather and was organised for the 24th successive year by choir member Brian Pigott, a remarkable record of hard work. Dransfield Properties gave ÂŁ1,000 for the prizes. The choir, conducted by Fran Wells and accompanied by Kim Kaye, gave a concert in the evening to say thank you to the club for its long-standing support. Club president John Yeates conducted an auction and Pat Rowe and Rita Harrison organised a raffle. Choir member and golf club director Alf Pearson and his wife Margaret liaised with Brian Pigott to ensure the day was a success. The choir also expressed its thanks to club professional Roger Broad for his support. On the day help was given by choir vice-president Gordon Webster, of Castle Farm, Bolsterstone, who also sponsored two holes.

Choir chairman Mick Siddall, a golf club member, thanked all at the club for their help and presented a cheque to Rebecca Andrews (pictured), a clinical research fellow who outlined her research, funded by the Weston Park Charity, into healing cancer-related bone disease. First prize for best golfers went to Liam Sullivan’s family foursome; second prize to green keeper Wayne Lazenby’s four; and third prize to Martin Talbot’s four from Town Moor Golf Club, Doncaster. Nearest-pin prize on hole 13 went to B. Lawton; nearest pin on hole 17 went to choir veteran Frank Milnes, a club past captain; and nearest line on hole 18 was won by Margaret Pearson. Mick Siddall is organising a concert at Sheffield Cathedral on Saturday October 26 to raise more money for the Weston Park Cancer Charity in memory of his late wife Carol. Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir will be joined by Loxley Silver Band, soprano Elizabeth Beard and the author and broadcaster Gervase Phinn.

Tankersley Park Golf Club – A club for the future! FOR well over four centuries, Tankersley Park has nestled in the parkland that has, in its time, been a Baronial Deer Park, a WWII battle tank testing ground, a medieval mining community in the 1500s and the source of energy reserves for the country during the austere years of the late 1940s. For the last 100 years it has been the home to Tankersley Park Golf Club and over that latter period the club has matured into, undoubtedly, one of the toughest golfing challenges in South Yorkshire. Periodically racked by opencast mining, tramways, aerial ropeways and the M1 motorway, time and careful husbandry have ensured that the course is not only superb to play, but is now mature and aesthetically pleasing and it is perhaps fitting that the course is now home to wild deer again, that can be seen, albeit fleetingly, in the early morning or at dusk. But the Club is now looking to the future and has invested heavily in the facilities, both on and off the course, and can now boast a superb restaurant where Sunday lunches, events and functions are catered for. Business Conferences can now be

accommodated in the newly appointed Arthur Storey Suite and vibrant social functions, from comedians to candle lit dinners are held regularly. We also cater for weddings, birthdays, engagements and funeral celebrations of life. There is no doubt, with our new facilities, our location, ease of access and parking, the club is second to none for Visitors and Members alike. The membership roll call at Tankersley Park is extremely diverse ranging from both men’s and women’s Amateur and Professional Open Champions all the way to beginners taking tentative steps and getting to grips with the game, all of which are catered for by our two fully qualified PGA professionals, Ian Kirk and Steph Hall, who offer advice on everything from golf shoes to launch angles as well holding regular teach-in sessions for those wishing to take their game to the next level. Our ladies section is growing and boasts our longest playing member of over 60 years at the club! And we are currently aiming to increase this section with our Ladies’ Taster Sessions. We must never forget our juniors, too – they are the future

life blood of the club and all juniors can benefit from extremely attractive rates, an array of competitions and coaching from our junior co-ordinator Steph Hall. But like any golf club, there is a competitive side to the club too and we can offer some challenging times, not only against the course itself, but against your fellow competitors. At over 6,200 yards and a newly revised standard scratch score of 71, there is much to catch the unwary or overconfident, when pushing a little too hard – yet the course does lend itself to the beginner and to the less able golfers who can still enjoy the beautiful scenery and tournament quality greens whilst making those magical shots that will surely beckon them back again next week. Memberships are currently available in several categories, and for those thinking of making the move to club membership we offer our Membership for a month package, designed as an invitation to see all the benefits of membership first hand, yet costing as little as £60 for a month, giving you full access to the course, plus all the benefits of regular membership,

such as discounted food and drink in the clubhouse. As we approach mid season, membership for the remainder of the year is also available at greatly discounted annual rates, but it also brings further advantages and great reductions on membership subscriptions for next year as well. We also offer five-day membership for those with a little more time on their hands as well as Social, Intermediate (19-29 years old), and House memberships. All our categories benefit from a range of payment options to suit your particular circumstances and the old application procedures are now a thing of the past – we welcome all new members without fuss. If you are interested or require any additional information, please contact the secretary on Sheffield (0114) 2468 247 or email on secretary@tankersleyparkgolfclub.org.uk. Our website address is www. tankersleyparkgolfclub.org.uk. We look forward to seeing you!

Tankersley Park Golf Club Membership Offers 2019 MEMBERSHIP FOR A MONTH – Play golf for one month for just £60 and enjoy ALL the benefits of full membership, including a bar card, opportunity to establish a full CONGU handicap, hire a buggy at members rates and get a free golf lesson from our qualified PGA pro staff, plus the full use of all our facilities. “Many who have taken advantage of this scheme have now gone on to convert to full membership status for the rest of 2019.” LADIES/GENTS FULL PLAYING 7 OR 5 DAY MEMBERSHIP – Join for as little as £354 for the rest of 2019

and enjoy the course at its very best, plus receive additional benefits towards discounted food and drink, free golf vouchers for your friends and family and, more importantly, new members joining in 2019 will get a 20% REDUCTION on their subscriptions when they renew in January 2020.

INTERMEDIATES AND JUNIORS – we have vacancies in both categories for anyone from the age of 10 up to 29 at vastly reduced membership rates Please contact the office for further details; we are waiting for your enquiry!

PAUL’S TRILBY CHALLENGE PAUL Blake, a seven-handicap golfer at Stocksbridge Golf Club, this week played in the UK’s largest televised amateur golf competition the Trilby Tour. Sponsored by the iconic tailor William Hunt, the Yorkshire qualifying event at the KP Club in Pocklington was watched by many. All players had to wear the obligatory trilby and as you can see, Paul did it in style. Paul had Stocksbridge Golf Club professional Roger Broad as his caddy, offering advice on club selection and helping him keep a cool head. Competition was fierce, in 30 degree temperatures on slick greens. Paul said: “The course was challenging, a bit like Stocksbridge Golf Club, which is a great club to develop your skills at golf.” If you want to know how Paul got on watch, out for the Trilby Tour coming soon on Freesports, UK’s only free to air sports channel.

Sunday’s club ride was cancelled due to the poor weather. This Sunday there are two club rides to Langsett. As well as the usual ride from Brewers Fayre roundabout at 9am there is a beginner’s ride for those not used to

group riding. This leaves Birdwell obelisk, The Walk, Birdwell at 9am. Visitors are welcome. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s website at http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk
