Chapeltown Academy sends first student to Oxbridge! CHAPELTOWN Academy say they are “delighted and proud” to announce that one of their Year 13 students, Harrison Jennings, has had his place at the University of Cambridge confirmed. Harrison will be reading History at Magdalene College after achieving A*AA in his A Level results. This is a fantastic achievement, and a worthy testament to all the hard work and commitment that Harrison has shown at Chapeltown Academy and throughout his schooling career. Harrison has been described as a model student showing great determination, eloquence, work ethic, and a thirst for learning. Ali Jaffer, Interim Head Teacher said: “Harrison has done superbly and we couldn’t be happier for him. This is what the Academy is about, showing our students that regardless of background they can go as far as they want. “He is so deserving of a place at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, and we are extremely proud of him.” Harrison said: “I’m absolutely delighted, and can’t wait - it’s the sort of thing you read about happening to other people, I can’t wait to get started.”

Take a walk down memory lane and reminisce over archive material on display in Ecclesfield Library throughout the Heritage Open Days September 7 to 9. Join a local tour on Friday September 8 to discover the working history of the area. A walking tour will leave Ecclesfield Library at 10.30am, and will be led by Mel and Joan Jones. Ecclesfield Library will be working in conjunction with the local Conservation Group and the

Ecclesfield Archiving Project to deliver this exciting venture. This is the first time the library has been involved with Heritage Open Days Sheffield and the library is forming an ‘Ecclesfield Hub’ with other venues and groups participating in the event. Mel and Joan Jones were commissioned by Ecclesfield Conservation Group to provide content for four information boards detailing the historical significance of industrial locations in the area. The tour will last approximately an hour and a half. Places are limited, therefore booking is required. Refreshments and homemade cakes will be available, both before and after the tour, in the library.

For further details, or to book, contact Ecclesfield Library, 113 High Street, Ecclesfield, S35 9UA. Phone 0114 2463615 or email ecclesfieldlib@ gmail.com

Hoylandswaine is just off the A628 Barnsley-Penistone road. The Nail Forge is on the village street near the Lord Nelson public house. There will be a sign outside.

The nail forge at Hoylandswaine, between Penistone and Barnsley, will be open free of charge on Sunday September 10, from 11am to 4pm.

The South Yorkshire Trades Historical Trust is opening its main site, Wortley Top Forge, with free entry on Saturday September 9. On Sunday September 10 it will be open with the usual small admission charge. Wortley Top Forge is about four miles from the Nail Forge. Other attractions nearby include Cannon Hall and Silkstone Church.

It is a historic small workshop where nails were made by hand on an anvil. Once there were many forges like it in the area, but now it is a rarity. It still has the original hearth, bellows and chimney. Come and hear volunteers explain how nails were made, how the nailmaker and his family worked in a forge close to their home, and the part that nailmaking played in village life.

BARD OF BARNSLEY SET TO STAR IN STANNINGTON IAN McMillan, the Bard of Barnsley, will travel all the way to Sheffield on Friday November 10 to perform in Stannington’s Lomas Hall. The performance is being presented in conjunction with volunteer managers at Stannington Library to raise funds for and raise the profile of one of Sheffield’s volunteer libraries. The event will further secure the library’s position at the heart of the local community. Yorkshire poet, broadcaster and comedian Ian McMillan, working with partner-in-rhyme accordionist Luke Carver Goss, will present a show called Words, Music, Glee and Delight that has been described as “a hilarious night of words, music and improv”. Tickets to the event have gone on sale at £12.50 each with no booking fee, and are available online through eventbrite.co.uk which accepts all major credit and debit cards. Tickets may also be bought by personal callers in Stannington Library - cash sales only in the library.

Stannington Library’s event organiser Phil Warhurst said, “Ian McMillan is a very special entertainer who understands Yorkshire folk better than all but a select few in his profession. We are all looking forward to a great night in the Lomas Hall, and we fully expect to welcome people from much further afield than Stannington’s immediate environs. “Initially we had wanted him to be part of the Stannington Story Festival at the end of September, but dates weren’t convenient. However we have worked with his management and are now happy to be able to present the show in the way we are doing as an extra treat within the festival, the bulk of which happens on Saturday 30th September in Stannington Park.” Full details of both events may be found on the ‘What’s On’ pages of Stannington Library’s website at stanningtonlibrary.com. Telephone enquiries can be made on 0114 234 8732 during library opening hours.

The north Sheffield store opened in September 2016 at the new Fox Valley development, and has now become a firm favourite with shoppers with a host of new brands joining the store in the last 12 months.

es Yorkshire brands including Harrogate Candles in its Homewares Department and the team are always on the look-out for different and new products and fashions to bring to their customers. Owner and Managing Director Deborah Holmes said the store’s unusual mix of brands is definitely something which provides a huge point of difference for shoppers.

The store prides itself on promoting independent and niche brands as well as uniquely Yorkshire brands.

She added: “We have always set out to promote more unusual brands, including organic make up and skincare ranges.

The latest concession to join the line-up is The World of McKee, a new pop up shop and gallery which has opened just in time for the store’s first birthday and showcasing the work of the iconic Sheffield artist Pete McKee.

“We also wanted to promote the best of Yorkshire alongside the national brands and fashions which we know our shoppers also want and the feedback in our first year has been fantastic and exceeded all our expectations.

Hobbs has also taken a concession at the store just last month and Tommy Hilfiger and Guide London are the latest brands to be stocked at Sandersons.

“We are attracting shoppers from a much larger area that we anticipated and we really would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us in our first year.”

Sandersons has also provided the launch pad for a number of new local businesses including Blakes Tea Room, Floral Boutique and The Nail Box who are part of the Sandersons success story. The company is now taking its unique offering to a new audience as Sandersons enters its second year of trading with a new online store scheduled to launch in October. The move follows customer feedback and demand for an online presence for the store.

There are also complimentary goody bags for the first 300 customers who spend over £35 filled with gifts from the stores brands. There will be live entertainment from 11am on Friday September 1 and complimentary birthday cake, cupcakes and prosecco for all Sandersons shoppers.

ECCLESFIELD Parish Council are installing a defibrillator outside their offices on Mortemly Lane and are now launching a campaign to get potentially life-saving equipment installed in each parish ward. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall to someone who is in cardiac arrest. This high energy shock is called defibrillation, and it's cited as an essential lifesaving step in the chain of survival. If someone has a cardiac arrest it is vital that the emergency services are called and that CPR is started with a defibrillator then used as soon as possible. When defibrillators are available, and someone is trained to

use it, the chance of survival can increase to 80% according to the British Heart Foundation. Councillors Zoe Sykes and Garry Weatherall are campaigning to get these potentially life-saving, yet low cost, items throughout the Parish - in Burncross, Chapeltown, Ecclesfield, Grenoside and High Green. The Parish council has allocated funds to kick start the campaign, but in order it make their goal a reality, councillors are calling out for help from local businesses, organisations and residents. Labour councillor Zoe Sykes said: “A person can have a cardiac arrest at any time or in any place so it’s important to be prepared. By placing defibrillators in public places, and training people to use them and to carry out CPR, more lives could be saved. This is why we want to make sure that

a defibrillator is located in every part of the Parish. “We have written to local businesses to ask for assistance with raising funds or to provide an appropriate site. We’re now asking for donations from local residents too – and any amount given would be a huge help. Each defibrillator costs just over £1,400 to supply and install and with the support of local residents we will try to do everything we can to raise these funds.” Whilst local businesses have already been contacted, households are now being encouraged to make donations to support the cause, and donations can be made direct to Ecclesfield Parish Council. As such, I've decided to launch a petition calling on our city council to come out in support of Hendos I unfortunately must respond to Steve Moxon‘s and hopefully other local companies by posing comment, some of which I find extremely offensive, an apology wouldn't come amiss. Pret a Manger

If Stocksbridge was Rochdale it would have a tram service. He might watch Michael Portillo’s train journeys in Europe where the vast majority of in town journeys are by tram. I am going to ask him the following questions. If you lived on any of the hillside estates in the valley and the only bus was the 57, how would he get to the Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield University, Meadowhall etc. There are bus services available but it would take considerably longer than the tram. When you have walked down hill to catch the 57 would you have the energy to walk back? One other point. Although the tram is operated by Stagecoach it is nothing to do with the bus service. The tram driver has no control over departure times from Middlewood. When the signal says go the tram has to go. Also Tramlink bus drivers are not allowed to get to Middlewood early, hence times when buses have to park up to waste time. There is no such thing as a fast local bus service. It stops to pick people up. The more popular the bus, the slower it is.

Give us a stop

Perhaps he could use his efforts to get a bus service to Barnsley reinstated.

Dear Sir / Madam

Its un-paid committee is currently busy getting ready for the September event which is set to attract, as usual, 1,000 competitors from across the country; and around 15,000 visitors from across the region. This year is the 145th show and it’s a great day out for people living in towns, cities and villages across South Yorkshire and beyond. The Penistone Agricultural Show offers a fantastic day out with everything from shire horses and poultry to sheep, cattle, pigs, goats and pedigree dogs through to farming machinery in action, rural crafts, handicrafts, homecrafts and horticulture. Add over 200 trade stalls, farrier competitions, a food hall, cookery demonstrations, hounds, brass bands, live music, a real ale bar and children’s activities and there really is something for everybody to enjoy. Show manager Nicholas Hoyland said: “Not a

The 60-strong committee who manage all the handicraft, horticulture and livestock competitions is joined by about 250 more volunteers on show day itself. Many more individuals and groups give their time up between now and then to take on everything from fundraising to leafleting and erecting marquees to directing traffic on the day. lot to people realise that Penistone Show is run entirely by volunteers and that the amount of preparation that goes into the event keeps us busy all year round. It’s a fantastic event with a huge history and I’m proud that we have maintained the show’s agricultural feel and core traditions whilst giving it new content each year. We aim to provide a day packed with entertainment from dawn until dusk”.

tone Scouts and the Penistone Round Table by giving them funding in return for their support on show day. “We see the Penistone Agricultural Show as something which shows off Penistone’s Agricultural heritage”, continued Nicholas Hoyland, “and we want to involve as many local people and the community in general as we can. Involving the local volunteer groups on the day allows us to support them by way of a financial contribution, but also they are really supporting the Committee and the show itself. We would struggle to put on the show without their continued support on the day.” Each year the Penistone Agricultural Society Committee also votes on a number charities to support by offering them a free trade stand at the show. This year’s chosen charities are the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Woodhead Mountain Rescue and RABI. If you are interested in finding out more about volunteering for Penistone Show, which will be held on Saturday September 9 2017, contact the Show Secretary on 07752 635304 or showsecretary@penistoneshow.com

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

TEAMS for Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield competed in the Bradfield Brewery Cup at Stocksbridge RUFC on Sunday. The action kicked off at 2pm and a great day was had by all with Rotherham Phoenix lifting the cup.

0114 283 11 00

The overall winner on 40 points but with the best back nine, was senior member Phil Upton. There was a great turnout for the evening’s prize presentation with Liana O’Sullivan winning the Presidents Spoon Trophy for the best lady golfer and the President’s Putter went to Phil Upton. The midweek stableford Division 1 went to Trevor Moseley on 39 points with Phil Jepson second on 37. Division Two was won by Martin Evans on 41 points. Gary Sykes was second with 38 points. The Dragon’s bad luck with the weather continued when their event was called off due to thunder, lightening and torrential rain. Captain’s Home Day will be replayed on August 30. Ladies Nine Hole competition was won by Bev Sykes with Hilja O’Sullivan coming second.

Church battle on with players missing PENISTONE Church had a difficult week in the NCEL Premier Division, drawing with Parkgate and losing a 4-3 thriller to Staveley Miners Welfare. On Saturday, an Andy Ring goal just after the restart was enough to earn a point after Kieran Hirst had tucked away a penalty on 19 minutes for Parkgate.

hitting a double and Robson Doolen scoring their other. After the game, manager Ian Richards said: “I was proud of the players’ performance today with six missing, lads playing out of position and through the pain barrier they gave everything to gain three points and were the better team, especially second half.

The defeat to Staveley saw Nathan Keightley hit a brace with Ryan Smith scoring Church’s other goal.

“We only came away with one point, not because of Parkgate carving us open but because of two extremely poor refereeing decisions that cost us.

Tyla Bell was on target for Staveley with Joshua Schofield

“The first was giving a penalty for deliberate handball which

was impossible from a yard away. Then he should have booked Luke Johnson and their number six for a midfield exchange but made a weak decision in not booking either because their number six would have got a second yellow and been dismissed. “Saying that I’m really pleased with the determination and the desire of the players to equalise and take the game to Parkgate in the second half. Finally, there were 98 watching today and over half were supporting Penistone.”
