AT LEAST 600 WORKERS MADE REDUNDANT AS COMPANY GOES BUST Bosses didn’t even have the decency to tell them inside the building, out of the pouring rain, says GMB Union At least 600 Safestyle workers have been made redundant with immediate effect after the company went bust. Workers were called to the double glazing company’s HQ in Barnsley on Monday to be told the company had been taken into administration. Staff were not allowed into the building and were given the news in the car park – in the pouring rain. A statement from the company, read out by the administrators, were told they had received their final pay cheques from the company and would have to pursue any money they were owed through the Redundancy Payment Service.

Sources say the company received more than £10 million in orders last month, while thousands of pounds were spent on social media advertising on Friday alone. Bob McNeill GMB Organiser said: "Loyal Safestyle UK workers have been treated absolutely abysmally. “They've been made redundant with immediate effect and told they won't get another penny from the company. “Bosses didn’t even have the decency to let them into the building out of the pouring rain. “Safestyle received millions of pounds of orders last month – where has that money gone?

The fiancée of an ice hockey player who was fatally injured during a match has paid tribute to her "sweet angel" as police continue to investigate his death.

South Yorkshire Police, which was called to the Utilita Arena in Sheffield, said it was "normal procedure" to open an investigation when an incident was reported.

Nottingham Panthers' Adam Johnson's neck was cut by a skate during a game against the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.

A force spokesperson added: "Our officers remain at the scene carrying out inquiries.

Fire service Scream spoof highlights ‘kitchen nightmare’ house blaze risk

Firefighters have turned to a cult horror classic this Halloween, in a bid to switch people on to the danger of kitchen fires. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) has released a Scream-inspired mini-film to remind people of the dangers of leaving their cooking unattended. Fire safety bosses hope the film will prompt people to avoid a kitchen nightmare by keeping an eye on their cooking- with more than half of all accidental house fires in South Yorkshire cooking-related. SYFR Group Manager Ade Parkin, said: “The opening scene of the original Scream movie is one of the most iconic moments in horror film history. We wanted to tap into that nostalgia this Halloween to remind residents that behind the masks and jump scares, there’s a very real villain in everyone’s home- and its name is distraction.

“So many of the fires we attend start in the kitchen, but almost all of them are entirely preventable. It’s so easy to be distracted by the TV, young children or your mobile phone- but it only takes a few moments for your cooking to ignite, sparking a fire which could put your family’s lives at risk and cause irrevocable damage to your home in the process.” SYFR attended more than 800 cooking-related fires in the last three years. Of these, 32% of them have been caused by distraction. Top tips for avoiding a kitchen fire include: Keeping electrical leads, cardboard and fabrics well away from the hob Switching off cooking appliances when you’ve finished and before you go to bed Keeping ovens and grill pans clean from grease and crumbs Having working smoke alarms and testing them regularly

The first project in the ambitious Stocksbridge Town Deal investment is underway this week – marking the roll out of the major improvements which are planned for the town. Work has started on the Oxley Park Improvement Project, investing more than £690,000 in the town’s historic park. The project will deliver improvements including a new landscaped area linking Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre to the wider park as well as new and upgraded footpaths to create better access. EV chargers are being installed in the Leisure Centre car park, and plans for a new all wheels park are due to be submitted next month. Subject to planning, construction on the all wheels park will start in the spring ready for a scheduled summer 2024 completion. The latest milestone in the plans for the town follows last week’s approval of grants totalling £220,000, for Stocksbridge Park Steels Football Club and Stocksbridge Rugby Club to make ground improvements for players and fans. The Stocksbridge Town Deal is also delivering a major regeneration of the town centre, including a new Library and Community Hub, placemaking improvements and investment in upgraded shop fronts. Co-Chair of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board, Miriam Cates MP, said: “The start of work at Oxley Park is a great milestone in our journey. From developing our bid through to receiving the funding approval from the Government earlier this year, which has allowed us to progress with the more detailed design on these first projects.

“It’s fantastic to be breaking ground at Oxley Park and we’re looking forward to announcing the timings for our major town centre investment in the next few weeks.” Julie Grocutt, Board Champion for the Oxley Park Improvement Project, said: “Oxley Park is an important part of our town’s history and such a great local amenity – we’re delighted to be able to start on these enhancements and look forward to what they will bring to the park for our community here in Stocksbridge.”

The Town Deal Accelerated Funding Programme delivered an earlier project in the park to create a new play area which opened in August 2021. This latest phase of investment is part of the £24.1 Town Deal funding, and also includes some local fundraising by the Friends of Oxley Park for the new all wheels park. Victoria Faulkner, from the Friends of Oxley Park, said: “This Town Deal investment has created a fantastic opportunity for the park to be enhanced and improved. It was gifted to the people of Stocksbridge more than 100 years ago by Thomas Oxley and it’s wonderful that we can continue to invest in that legacy for our local community.” Photograph shows: L-R Graham Silverwood from the Town Deal Board and Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre (SCLC) Andy Clarke from SCLC, Julie Grocutt, project champion from the Town Deal Board, Dennis Pindar from SCLC and Victoria Faulkner from Friends of Oxley Park and David Addenbrooke from Sheffield City Council

The Retail Hub hosted a five-day pop-up shop at the college’s Students’ Union during Fresher’s Week, with rails of pre-loved fashion items available for students and staff to purchase. The partnership raised awareness of the Retail Hub, which raises money for the hospice by selling a range of pre-loved vintage, designer brands and high-street favourites. It was also an opportunity to share the sustainability benefits of shopping second-hand and steering away from fast fashion. The collaboration will continue with the Retail Hub returning for a week in December, giving students and staff the opportunity to bag a bargain at student-friendly prices, with the money raised going directly to the hospice.

Sasha Foyster, Learner Voice Adviser at the college’s Students’ Union, said: “We would like to thank everyone from the hospice, especially Lewis and Simon, who supported the college to make the pop-up shop a success. “They transformed our Student’s Union into a space where students felt heard about their sustainability needs - the students loved having the option to buy affordable and sustainable clothing within the college and we cannot wait for the hospice team to return!” Simon, Warehouse and Sales Lead at Barnsley Hospice Warehouse, added: “The pop-up shop was a great opportunity to connect with the college and its students. “All items purchased raise vital funds for the hospice, whilst promoting sustainability in fashion at the same time. Thanks to everyone at Barnsley College for welcoming us, and a huge thank you to the staff and students who stopped by and supported the event. We can’t wait to be back in December!”

Popular Sheffield band Mam Tour will be the headline act for a special evening of live entertainment in memory of St Luke’s Hospice Olwen Kelly. Olwen was a patient at St Luke’s when she lost her fight against cancer last December. Since then husband Mark – a driver with Supertram - has embarked on a series of fundraising challenges, including a 250-mile walk which raised more than £3,000. “I just felt I owed St Luke’s so much and that I had to do something to support them,” said Mark. “It’s the little things you remember the most, like when Olwen said she liked being able to see the birds in the garden from her room and within 10 minutes a

nurse came back with a little bird feeder to fit on the outside of the window. “They didn’t just support Olwen, they were there for me and our son Adam and when Adam’s partner Lois was having to work remotely, they even provided her with a room.” Mark’s latest fundraiser, with Mam Tour topping the bill and with support from fellow musician Kenny Francis, will be held at Sheffield’s Philadelphia Function Suite in Martin Street, Upperthorpe, on December 15 from 7pm. The evening will also include a live auction and raffle and tickets, which cost £5, are available now at www.ticketsource.co.uk

SCROOGE IN TOWN Bah humbug! I don’t think so. Steel Valley Beacon Arts & Christ Church Stocksbridge's latest production awaits you.

It’s just what we need for the festive season, a good ghost story and they don’t come better than this. Over fifty actors and singers, from aged 8 to 80, have been rehearsing hard since the spring to bring to Stocksbridge the musical version of Charles Dicken’s classic, A Christmas Carol. Adapted and directed by Mandy Aitken this lavish production will bring plenty of light and dark to get you in the mood for Christmas. There will be five performances at Christ Church, Man-

chester Road Stocksbridge, starting with the opening night on Friday 24th November at 7.15pm. There will be a matinee at 2pm and an evening performance at 7.15pm on Saturday 25th November, then two further evening performances on Friday 1st December and Saturday 2nd December both at 7.15pm. Producer Simon Utting said, “This is the first joint production by Beacon and Christ Church and we hope that both our faithful and regular audiences will support this joint venture”.

Tickets, at £10 for adults and £8 for children, are available from Samuel’s Kitchen or by phoning the Box Office on 07792 142545. At this production numbered seats are being sold, so buy early if you want a good seat. The production is supporting The Stocksbridge Food Bank and we are asking all those who come to the performance to bring with them a donation for the food bank. They particularly need UHT milk, coffee, toilet rolls and toiletries, tinned meat and tinned vegetables. So why not get yourself a ticket, for a great night out to start your Christmas celebrations and help others less fortunate via the Food Bank at the same time? It’s a win-win scenario.

YourLetters Stocksbridge Train Dear Look Local There is understandably both excitement and scepticism about the idea of a rail link to Sheffield. One thing it will need for certain is passengers. Unless a viable bus service is provided urgently I know that many people without cars and people who do not want to always use their car will have moved somewhere else long before it is actually operating. Slow Police Response Sparks Outrage from Business Owner Tensions ran high in Stocksbridge as a local business owner, Trevor Fletcher, came forward with allegations of a sluggish police response, claiming that the law failed to act when his business property fell victim to vandalism. The incident has Mr Fletcher in shock and anger, raising concerns over the effectiveness of the local police force. The incident unfolded when Mr Fletcher, the owner of Crown Car Garages on Manchester Road, received a phone call while he was at home. The caller reported that three men were vandalising vehicles on the forecourt of his business establishment. Without hesitation, Fletcher and his team sprang into action, racing to the scene to confront the vandals and protect their property. Fletcher, visibly frustrated, recounted the events of that fateful evening, stating, "We reacted as soon as we could and gave

chase to three men in a vehicle who had smashed the windows of one of our vans and damaged another vehicle." However, their pursuit came to an untimely halt as they found themselves low on fuel. Seeking guidance from law enforcement, Fletcher contacted the police for assistance. To his dismay, the advice they received was to abandon their pursuit. Exasperated and disheartened, Fletcher and his team reluctantly complied with the police's directive, leaving the vandals to escape the scene. The situation took a further disappointing turn when the police finally arrived at the scene, but not until an entire day had passed since the initial call. An officer was dispatched to the business premises, where Mr Fletcher claims he was interviewed for an extensive three hours. "We gave chase but eventually we had to give up as we ran low on fuel. The Police advised us not to

give chase, and they only responded a day later by sending an officer, who interviewed me for three hours," Fletcher explained, his frustration evident. The alleged delayed response from the local police has left Mr Fletcher bewildered and concerned about their safety. In his candid statement, Fletcher questioned, "Are people in this area aware of the slow response time for police help? I certainly am now!" In response to the incident, Mr Fletcher has lodged an official complaint with the local police, eagerly awaiting a response to his concerns. The case is sure to ignite debate within Stocksbridge about the need for an improved and more efficient police response system, especially in situations where immediate action is imperative. Police were contacted for comment, at the time of going to press, we are still awaiting a response.

YourLetters What Kay Kay Night was all about -following Maureen Aitken's letter last week What Kay Kay Night was all about Maureen Aitken last week reminded us about Kay Kay Night, a.k.a. Cakin Neet. This is or was a vestige of a truly ancient custom, marking what used to be the most important date in the calendar: the ‘Celtic’ new year’s day. The year was envisaged as being divided into ‘light’ and ‘dark’ halves. November 1 was day one of the ‘dark year’, after, on October 31, the last day of the ‘light year’. Then ensued five days of celebration ending in a fire festival – November 5 bonfire night has been assumed to commemorate Guy Fawkes, but this is a relatively very recent usurpation. It was considered that at this time of year there was a breakdown in the separation of this from the ‘otherworld’, such that spirits were at large. Hence the antics of formerly adults,

THE BED SHOP SHEFFIELDW ON!

though (as meaning was lost and the custom faded) latterly only children on ‘mischief ’ night, pointing out the need for placation on the following evening when the ‘surrogate spirits’ would go door to door receiving money, originally parkin (from Scottish Gaelic, bairghin, ’cake’). The reason why no-one was supposed to know who you were was because otherwise the illusion of being a surrogate spirit would be lost. The gift of parkin might be thought the basis of the rationalisation to ‘caking’, but ‘Kay Kay’ indicates the origin in a mangling over time (and with language change) of corra-chagailt (pronounced KOR-a-chaKEL-jeh), which is the Gaelic collective term for ‘evil spirits’ thought to be manifest in the flames of a fire as it is about to go out. Fire was conceived of as the great purifier, but, apparently, as soon as it’s on the wane, the ‘evil’ that otherwise it purges becomes the very stuff of the fire itself. [So often is mythology self-contradictory, it seems to be its hallmark.] Fire from the communal bonfire was used to light torches

to be carried on a circuit of the boundaries of each farm and to bring into each house to freshly kindle the hearth (cagailt); all to ward off ‘evil spirits’. This symbolic renewal of fire countered the fear that ‘old fire’ itself was a conduit for, nay embodiment of ‘evil spirits’. The whole point of the exercise, then, was to keep the corra-chagailt at bay, by fighting fire with fire, as it were. Presumably, this was to do with the notion of a strong need to encourage life to keep going despite its seemingly being extinguished in the soon-to-arrive winter – regeneration mythology. We should make much more – well, start to make something -- of our neighbourhood (extending notably to Stannington, and including a few other locales hereabouts) apparently being the very last where this wonderful stuff survived, that for thousands of years was an activity central to life across the whole country, and, surely, Europe and beyond. Runners excel at sunny Longley Park XC The second fixture of the South Yorkshire Cross Country league took place at Longley Park in Sheffield. Persistent rain in the run up to the race meant conditions were particularly muddy underfoot. On the day though the weather was unseasonably warm and the runners were besieged by a swarm of ladybirds during the event.

7 goal thriller Chapeltown RBL 3-4 Royal Earl A feisty and entertaining game saw RBL drop points for the first time this season. 5 goals in the first half started when Jed Phillips crossed first time for Jay Carter to head home. 5 minutes later Legion found themselves 2-1 behind with a quick fire double from the visitors. Legion were awarded a penalty as two of their midfielders were forced off with injuries, and Morgan Cowell scored the resulting kick. Earl regained the lead before half time and it stayed that way until 15 minutes from time.

Ash Gray’s inch perfect tackle led to Cowell’s raking ball which Carter touched around the goalkeeper and rolled into the empty goal.

Local Sport Injured Rugby men on the mend With most Rugby fans glued to the Finals of the Rugby World Cup at the weekend, the YRFU gave the Yorkshire 4 Counties League the weekend off to enjoy the climax of the tournament.

ACL injury the Club originally feared. Newton will probably require keyhole surgery to repair any damage, so he will likely be able to return to take part at the back end of the season.

A bye week is also scheduled for Stocksbridge Rugby for next weekend however, the club, sponsored by Globe Holidays are still trying to confirm a home friendly fixture with recently reformed Maltby Rugby, looking for a 2.15pm kick off at Coal Pit Lane.

Better news in the boiler room is that ‘clock tower’ Andy Beale is targeting a return to action during November, as he recovers from a torn ac ligament & dislocated clavicle in his shoulder, & partner in crime ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker looks to have shaken off a niggly ankle condition as he returns to full fitness.

The enforced lay off has allowed some of the club’s injured players further time for recovery, with some encouraging news for Head Coach Andy Lawrence. In form back rower Pete Newton has a scan booked for his knee injury, but the results of an initial consultation seem to indicate cartilage damage rather than the dreaded

STEELS FALTER AGAIN

The next home league fixture is the Round 8 clash with Hornsea Rugby on Saturday 11th November, with a 2.15pm kick off, where Stocksbridge will be targeting a victory to get their season back on track.

Power, Passion and Endurance

Stocksbridge Park Steels lost out to Ossett United in a 1-0 defeat.

In a remarkable display of endurance and love for the sport, Valley hill runner John Power triumphed in the Snowdonia Marathon this past Saturday. With a backdrop of stunning landscapes, challenging weather, and heart-pounding views, John's journey through the marathon was nothing short of a test of both physical and mental strength. Describing the race, John Power said it was an incredibly tough run, but the beauty of the Snowdonia mountain served as an inspiring companion throughout. "The valley, the sunshine, the rain, and the awe-inspiring views can take your breath away," he explained, emphasising the sheer magnificence of the course. However, he also acknowledged that the pain and exhaustion that accompany a marathon make runners question their choices, but the breathtaking scenery of

Snowdonia more than compensates for the hardships. John Power's passion for running and his ability to conquer such a challenging race did not happen overnight. He credited Valley Hill Runners and their Couch to 5k program as the foundations of his running journey. He expressed profound gratitude for the continued support and camaraderie he received from the running community, stating that he could not have achieved his marathon dreams without their unwavering encouragement and guidance. Power's story is a testament to the transformative power of dedication and the importance of a supportive community. His victory at the Snowdonia Marathon serves as an inspiration for aspiring runners and a reminder of the breathtaking beauty that can be found amidst the most gruelling challenges.

The Steels were almost ahead within two minutes. Jack Tinker’s overlap caused problems once again and he got the space to whip in a low cross. It headed towards goal but it was behind the attackers rushing onto it, meaning Ossett were just about able to get it away. Stocksbridge continued to have more of the ball and the chances but were not able to convert them to the frustration of the crowd. They’d soon be punished for being unable to score. It was simple for Ossett, a throw-in led to an unchallenged cross which Alex Peterson was then able to head in, giving the Sheepicorns the lead. It continued to be a frustrating game, with Charlie Oglesby coming close after his header was well saved by the Ossett goalkeeper. But in the end, Stocksbridge couldn’t get one back before the end of the first half. The second half was very similar with the first. Stocksbridge had a lot of the ball and quite a lot of good plays but were unable to get the moment which would lead to a goal. Sometimes that was a misplaced pass or a shot that didn’t test the goalkeeper, but it was leading to the same problem of there being no goal. The game would change on another red card call. Jack Watson would go for a ball and would end up going hip-to-hip on a challenge, leading to a foul. The referee would then shock Bracken Moor by brandishing a red card, giving Watson his marching orders. This caused a large reaction, with both Ian Richards and Jordan Lemon being booked for their response to the decision.

Unfortunately, this seemed to stop Stocksbridge’s domination of the game. They didn’t get as much of the ball and Ossett were able to hold them off at arms length. Oliver Nowak fired over from close range after one breakthrough, but that wouldn’t have counted anyway as the linesman had ruled it offside. In the end, Stocksbridge were left to rue their missed chances as Ossett returned to West Yorkshire with three points. Next Home Fixture: Saturday 11 November, 3pm KO vs North Ferriby. A special remembrance will be held with a two minute silence with a bugle player and exservicemen/women in attendance.
