Remarkable Life of Alice Joan Prince: Celebrating 105 Years and Counting...
Alice Joan Prince's story is nothing short of extraordinary. She has traversed the globe, visiting nearly every country on Earth, and now finds herself with fewer places to add to her travelogue than those she's already explored. When asked about the secret to her long and healthy life, her response is both surprising and endearing, James Fletcher went to meet her.
"Ever since my husband passed away, and I didn't have to get breakfast ready, I've had toast and Marmite every morning and a spoonful of Andrews, along with two glasses of Sherry in the evening to help me get to sleep," Alice revealed with a chuckle, emphasising the importance of simple pleasures in her routine. But it's not just her dietary habits that have kept her going. Alice's active lifestyle has played a cru-
cial role. In her younger days, she frequently went out with friends and enjoyed playing tennis. Over the years, she has maintained her mental agility by engaging in hobbies such as knitting, crocheting, and avidly reading books. She's also a fan of game shows, frequently playing along from home to keep her mind sharp.
Reflecting on her life, Alice reminisced about her early days of wedded bliss. Despite her initial fears of leaving Stocksbridge when she married her husband, who hailed from Derbyshire, she soon fell in love with the town. "I have never wanted to move away from Stocksbridge; I love it here. Even though it isn't what it used to be, it's still my home," she affectionately stated.
Yet, the passage of time has brought some loneliness. "I've had
a very lovely life, a lovely family. But it can get lonely because all my friends and people I've known over the years have now passed away, so it can get quite lonely," Alice admitted, highlighting the bittersweet aspect of a long life. As Stocksbridge prepares to cel ebrate Alice Prince's 105th birth day, it is worth noting that she is believed to be the oldest person ever to have lived in the town since its founding in the mid-19 th century. Her resilience, zest for life, and heartwarming wisdom continue to inspire not only the people of Stocksbridge but all who have the privilege of knowing her. The celebration of Alice's remark able journey is a testament to the enduring spirit of Stocksbridge and a reminder that age is just a number when one embraces life with passion and grace.

Arts FestivAl begins
Fortnight of events planned as Homegrown Arts Festival gets underway
The Homegrown Arts Festival gets underway next week – offering a packed programme of events to showcase the creative talent in Stocksbridge and Deepcar.
This year’s Homegrown Festival will take place from September 30th to October 14th celebrating arts and culture in the Valley – dozens of events, exhibitions and performances will be taking place across the two weeks.
Homegrown is aimed at providing a platform for local artists, writers, musicians, crafters and performers. There will be art displays working with the local schools as well as dozens of events across the two-week programme starting with a special Opening Concert at Christchurch on September 30th from Steel Valley Beacon Arts.
The annual event is organised by a group of volunteers and the Homegrown team aims to make the 2023 Festival bigger and better. The Festival is supported by UDAC and Steel Valley Beacon Arts with local organisations including Stocksbridge Town Council, The Sheffield Town Trust, The Bridge Shop, North Area LAC and Fox Valley supporting the Festival.
Other events include a Homegrown Proms at the Venue on October 3rd and a Makers Market due to take place at Fox Valley on Sunday, October 1st, pop up galleries and art displays will also feature as well as poetry readings, art classes and a songwriting showcase.
The Festival will close with a special event at the Stocksbridge Legionnaires’ Club at Edward St, Stocksbridge with the superb Ceilidh Band Rum Ram Ruff.
Alex Archer from Homegrown Festival said: “We really wanted to build on the enthusiasm of the 2022 event so we put a call out to the community early in the year and the response has just been amazing – we have so much talent and creativity here in Stocksbridge and this is a great opportunity for people to enjoy and celebrate that and really get involved.
“Many of our events are free and the programme really does have something for everyone at so many different venues across the town – from churches and village halls to the town’s library and empty shop- units.
“As well as the organisations which have provided financial support we are grateful to so many local groups and businesses for helping with ticket sales and promotions – this really is a huge community effort.”
Pick up a Homegrown Programme at various locations across the town, including the Co-op, Stocksbridge Library and Samuels Kitchen and you can also see the posters promoting the events in the Co-op window. Check details for ticketed events on where you can purchase your tickets.
Events are also listed on the website https://steel-valleybeacon-arts.co.uk/homegrown/

Rob the ‘Rocket’
Nicknamed "Rob the Rocket," 78-year-old Robert Hallam achieved an impressive fundraising campaign by conquering the Greno chase this year.
The former bus driver from Grenoside raised over £1000 for charities based in Sheffield. During an interview with Look Local, Rob expressed his admiration for Sheffield, calling it a fantastic place to live.
He extended his gratitude to Peter and Gaynor Hughes for organising such a wonderful event. The fundraising effort involved completing two laps around "the village," starting and ending in the park.
The result was the collection of an amazing £1112.50, which was divided equally among four deserving local charities. Each charity, including St. Luke's Hospice, Weston Park Hospital, Sheffield Children's Hospital, and The Fellowship of Service 139 (Springvale Mess), received £270 as recipients of the funds.

Walkers on the Sheffield and Tinsley canal towpath were astonished recently to see HRH, The Princess Royal, steering a 57 feet long barge into Sheffield City Centre! Princess Anne had flown in by helicopter to view the work of the Ethel Trust, an award winning charity, providing day and residential waterways experiences for disadvantaged groups in South Yorkshire.
With barges based in Sheffield and Thorne, near Doncaster, the Trust was celebrating the arrival of their brand new ‘state of the art’ community barge, called ‘Pearl’. Having viewed the advanced technology on the boat, including a hybrid engine assisted by solar panels, Her Royal Highness, an accomplished sailor, took over the steering from the skipper for the return trip into Victoria Quays.
Back on shore, Princess Anne generously took time to talk to every one of the Trust’s volunteers individually, before officially naming the barge by unveiling a commemorative plaque.
The Ethel Trust is currently recruiting new volunteers, and if you can spare 2 days per month, then check out the Trust’s website www.etheltrust.co.uk or email ethelbarge@gmail.com for more details. No boating experience is required as full training will be provided.
If you know of, or are part of a community group that would benefit from the Trust’s services, then please get in touch, and come and experience these fantastic barges!

e steel industry is the backbone of communities across Britain, especially here in Penistone and Stocksbridge. Steel is the foundation of our future economy and we need an industry that sustains both jobs and communities.
e steelworks in Stocksbridge have been the beating heart of our local community and economy since the 1840s – over 180 years. In my late teens, we lived opposite Stocksbridge Speciality Steels, on Unsliven Road. An iconic part of the landscape, the thrum of noise and activity, of buses of workers arriving in the early morning.
To this day, in Stocksbridge and the surrounding area, hundreds of local people rely on Stocksbridge Speciality Steels for their livelihood. Yet when it comes to British steel, the Conservative government is missing in action, risking huge damage to our communities.
Whilst other countries are investing in clean steel projects, the UK has been le behind, with no voice given to those who work in steel. ere are twenty-three clean steel projects across Europe, but none in the UK. We need investment in the steel industry and collaboration with UK steelmakers in order to ‘green’ steel as an opportunity to create thousands of new, well-paid jobs.
Labour has pledged investment of £3 billion alongside industry over the next decade to decarbonise the steel industry - crucially looking at the whole industry, not this siteby-site approach.
Labour’s plans will decarbonise the steel industry by working with workers and industry investing in a range of technologies to ensure we have the clean steel we need to rebuild Britain. is is essential to ensure steel has a sustainable future.
British businesses are crying out for more support to make the transition to a low carbon economy, but the government is missing in action.
A debate around the future of Tata Steel took place in Westminster last week, yet the current MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge was silent. If I’m voted in to be your local MP, I will be a voice for the steel industry and the families whose livelihoods depend on it. Steel is our future.

DOG INTERACTION SAFETY
For safe interaction with dogs, follow these important steps and tips:
Always supervise your dog and children, pay attention to what is happening so you can intervene at the earliest opportunity
Encourage gentle stroking, do not allow children to pull, grab or sit on the dog
Do not allow children near your dog if it is eating, sleeping, or with items that belong to him/her such as toys
If you see that your dog is becoming worried or agitated, or the child is becoming frightened, then intervene and provide a safe space for each of them to have some time alone
Plan your walk, you know your dog. If they are likely to become stressed in large crowds and busy areas, walk them in the morning or evening and avoid public parks and paths
Keeping your dog on a lead can stop him or her running over to families with children or other dogs and causing fear or harm. It’s important to remember not everyone likes dogs and some people are frightened, which can change your dog’s behaviour.
Your dog is your responsibility, the safety of those around you relies on you as an owner taking action.
Although we are seeing an increase in incidents, we are also seeing many victims who do not wish to prosecute and support a police investigation.

MS Society Awards
I’m delighted to be helping the MS Society celebrate the amazing volunteers who help the charity support people living with multiple sclerosis (MS) across the UK. We’re looking for people in Yorkshire to nominate volunteers who have made an impact on people a ected by MS. Whether that’s through outstanding support,
adventurous fundraising or tackling injustice on behalf of the whole MS community – we want to hear from you!
Around 10,500 people live with MS in Yorkshire and symptoms are di erent for everyone. MS can a ect how a person moves, thinks and feels.
Without volunteers’ time and energy, it would be impossible for the MS Society to deliver the services and support that it does. I became an MS Society Ambassador in 2022 but have been a lifelong supporter of the charity as my mum lives with MS. And I’m thrilled to say I’ll be hosting the virtual Volunteer Impact Awards ceremony on ursday 30 November at 7pm to shine a light on the inspiring people who have done incredible things to support the MS community.
If readers know a volunteer in Yorkshire who they’d like to see get one of six special awards, please visit www.mssociety. org.uk/VolunteerAwards. Nominations close on Saturday 30 September 2023.
Budding chemists take part in Challenge
Six Barnsley Sixth Form College students achieved Silver and Copper awards in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, a gruelling competition in which participants had to apply their chemical knowledge.
Lily Worsley and Joe Seward claimed Silver Awards in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge while Caelan Firth, Daniel Ludditt, Ramiz Khalil and Jake Cunli e received a Copper Award.
e Cambridge Chemistry Challenge is an annual competition run by Cambridge University, which aims to stretch and challenge students interested in chemistry and provides excellent experience for anyone considering taking their studies further.
e students undertook a 90-minute written exam set by an experienced team of teachers and university chemists, which took them signi cantly beyond the syllabus and encouraged them to think about science in the way they would at university.
Joe said: “I found the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge engaging and fun to participate in, I’m very pleased with the award I received for my achievements in the challenge. From the challenge, I've been able to apply the knowledge of AS Level Chemistry to the context of questions from di erent contexts.”
Ramiz added: “I found it challenging at rst as it was something that is unpredictable and out of my comfort zone. In the competition I
have learned to develop my problem solving, allowing me to utilise the knowledge already learned and modify it to reach a solution, hence this will help me going forward in my academic journey as I can better interpret problem motives to nd the most appropriate answer.
e Sixth Form College has helped with their strong support and information.” For more information about the range of A Levels courses available at Barnsley Sixth Form College, visit www. barnsleysixthformcollege. co.uk, email info@barnsley. ac.uk or call 01226 216 123. Alternatively, attend the Barnsley Sixth Form College on Wednesday 18 October, 4.00pm – 7.00pm. Visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/events for further details.

Woman died in surgery to remove blood clots - inquest
A woman died during an operation to remove blood clots from her brain just days a er complaining of "migraine-like" symptoms, an inquest has heard, writes Victoria Scheer for BBC News.
Natasha Hewitt, 35, from She eld, died in surgery in 2022.
A coroner heard she had been diagnosed with a suspected ear infection on 14 December, but two days later a CT scan revealed multiple blood clots. She died in the early hours of 18 December.
e inquest at She eld's MedicoLegal Centre continues.
On ursday assistant coroner Marilyn Whittle heard Mrs Hewitt had a history of blood clots.
e inquest was told that while pregnant with her son in July 2021 a blood clot had been discovered adjacent to the placenta and she had undergone an emergency caesarean.
e following month, she also received hospital treatment for a blood clot on her lung. e coroner was told that Mrs Hewitt's symptoms had begun on 8 December 2022 when she began to feel unwell and complained of back pain.
A er su ering from a headache on 11 December, Mrs Hewitt called her GP who advised her to visit a walk-in centre. Her "migraine-like" symptoms worsened and she began to struggle to stand up without feeling dizzy and lightheaded, her husband, Nick, told the hearing.
She attended the walk-in centre on 14 December, where she was prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for a suspected ear infection.
However, Mr Hewitt said his wife's condition deteriorated and she started vomiting the next day.
He called an ambulance on 16 December and his wife was taken to hospital where CT scans revealed she had multiple
blood clots on her brain and she was transferred for specialist sur-
Consultant neurologist Professor Sivaraman Nair, said it had been di cult to ascertain when the blood clots had developed but said it was "more likely than not" that it had been six days prior to her admission.
Surgeons rst attempted to remove some of the blood clots, but when her condition did not improve they tried to relieve pressure on her brain by removing part of her skull.
Mrs Hewitt died in surgery just before 01:00 GMT on 18 Decem-
Dr Rhona Maclean and Prof Nair both gave evidence to the inquest to say that if anticoagulants had been prescribed on 14 or 15 December, "the outcome would've been di erent".
Dr Maclean added: "I think it likely, should she have started anticoagulation on 14 December, it would've been e ective.
" e majority of patients put on anticoagulation admitted to hospital make a good recovery."
In court, Mr Hewitt thanked Professor Nair for his e orts in trying to save his wife. e inquest continues.

Chapeltown RBL made it 9 points from 9, winning their rst home game of the season against last year's rivals Eckington.

Eckington pulled one back a er 30 minutes and rallied together asking questions of the RBL defence.

Home match days at Coal Pit Lane are sponsored by Premier Stone Worktops Ltd and they didn’t have long to wait to register the rst try of the a ernoon as slammin’ Sam Whitaker bulldozed his way over the line from close range, this was quickly followed by Jack Spencer nishing a quality backline move to cross in the corner, whilst young prospect Jack Leary, , scored a brace in quick succession again nishing an excellent handling move involving forwards and backs. ‘Lawrenceball’ seems to be in good order as the burly bulk of Pete Newton sprinted fully 50 metres to register the next score, Newton this time close enough for Bowskill to tag on the extras.
With the game e ectively over as a contest, Head Coach Andy Lawrence took the opportunity to give the bench players some valuable game time, and the Christopherson duo entered the fray with good e ect. Ricky Sr, produced a break to send Norman dancing through another gap in the visiting defence, with Leary converting. TIGERS FANTASTIC
Runners in action on fells and road
Richard Cottam was fourth overall and first over 40 man at the Stanage Struggle which is a 6.5-mile fell race based out of Hathersage in the peak district. His teammate Steve Standers picked up third place in the men’s over-age category.
The John Hewitt Memorial Shelf Moor fell race acted as the latest and final round of the English fell running championships so the standard of competitors was very high. Helen Wright was seventh in the ladies over40 age category in 1-1842 and Richard Cottam managed eighth place in the men’s over40 age category in a time of 51-14.
summer series saw a number of Penistone runners pick up series prizes. Penistone winners were George Parr (first open man), Richard Cottam (first over40 man), Lesley Parker (first over40 lady), Barbara Haigh (first over70 lady), Ray Brown (second over70 man) Jon Hallam (third over40 man) and Helen Wright (third over40 lady).
SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead says he couldn’t have asked for more from his makeshift side as they took a big step towards the Sports Insure Premiership Grand Final.
The Tru Plant Tigers won 50-40 at Wolverhampton on Monday - despite being without their injured top two riders Tai Woffinden and Tobiasz Musielak.
The South Yorkshire side won 11 of the 15 races, rounding off with nine straight heat victories to help them build up the ten-point advantage.
Sheffield’s smart guest selections paid off with Robert Lambert and Richard Lawson top scoring with 22 points between them while stand-in reserve Drew Kemp also came up with a big win in Heat Nine when he led home the first 5-1 of the semi-final. Elsewhere, regular Tigers Kyle Howarth, Josh Pickering and Chris Holder also all enjoyed two race wins apiece whilst Rising Star Jason Edwards added a couple of points from the reserves race. It was a display which now makes the Tigers huge favourites to progress from Thursday’s (September 28, 7.30) second leg at Owlerton. And Stead couldn’t hide his pride in his riders.
“It was 100 per cent effort from every single one of the lads,” he said. “They rode their socks off in every single heat, they battled for places when they were out of positions, consolidated clever points in other heats and they did everything and more than I could’ve asked for.
Zoe’s first parkrun
“They were fabulous on track, they’ve been a great bunch of lads all helping each other in the pits as well and we’ve seen a fantastic result because of their hard work and determination.”
Stead also praised the healthy number of travelling Sheffield supporters who made their voices heard on the Monmore Green terraces.
“The fans played their part,” he said.
“We could hear them in great numbers giving us every bit of support and that made a difference.
“We can’t thank them enough for their backing yet again - and don’t underestimate the role they can play again on Thursday at Owlerton.”
