MP LEADING FIGHT FOR TOUGHER RWANDA LAW

Local MP Miriam Cates is leading calls in Parliament for tougher laws to tackle illegal migration and ensure that people who arrive in the UK illegally can be removed.

The MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge is one of a group of over 50 Conservative MPs backing amendments to the Safety of Rwanda Bill that would remove the ability of European Court judges in Strasbourg to block people from being sent to Rwanda. The amendments would also prevent those who arrive illegally from using spurious legal claims to prevent themselves from being removed. Speaking about the amendments, Miriam Cates said: "We cannot allow a situation to continue where people who come to the UK illegally on these small boats are able to keep

avoiding being sent to Rwanda. Anyone who enters that way should be quickly removed either to their home country or to a safe country like Rwanda. "I fully support the intention to get these flights going as soon as possible, but at the moment there are too many loopholes. I'm working hard to close these loopholes and prevent our asylum system from being abused. "I'm determined to do everything I can in Parliament to toughen up these laws and end the disgraceful people smuggling that's going on in the Channel." The Safety of Rwanda Bill is being debated in Parliament this week. If passed it would legally clarify that Rwanda is a safe country for illegal immigrants to be sent to and limit the ability of those being removed to challenge that in court.

FLOODING WOES PERSIST DESPITE PLEAS FOR HELP ...Continued from front page

Residents of a block of terraced houses in Midhopestones find themselves trapped in an ongoing battle against flooding, as they claim that authorities have turned a blind eye to their pleas for assistance. Despite enduring months of persistent flooding, residents assert that their appeals for preventive measures have fallen on deaf ears. Tony Siddal, a 68-year-old former reservoir keeper, and his wife Janet, 61, who have been residents of the area for over 45 years, express frustration over the lack of support. They highlight the dire situation where water consistently floods properties and sprays up onto their bedroom windows from passing vehicles, turning their daily lives into a constant struggle. SANDBAGS: Residents at Don Terrace in Midhopestones sandbag their front doors, claiming they have been flooded several times recently.

Janet Siddal shared her exasperation with Look Local, stating, "We're just sick of it now, after all

these years fighting for something to be done. If we have over an hour or two of rain, we are on tenterhooks." The root of the problem appears to be blocked drains and a culvert designed to carry water under the road and into the nearby Underbank reservoir. Concerned residents have reached out to both National Highways and Barnsley Council, urging them to address the issue promptly.

Richard Cravens, a 65-year-old resident of five years, emphasised the preventable nature of the situation, saying, "The water comes right up to our houses and it shouldn't do. We would like Barnsley Council to come and clean the drains. The situation is completely preventable." Tragically, the repercussions extend beyond individual properties, affecting the main A616 road directly in front of the four-house

row. The blockage results in recurrent flooding, causing additional challenges for the community. Residents claim that from October 20th to the end of 2023, they have faced several instances of flooding. Despite officials conducting investigations, no tangible actions have been taken to alleviate the problem. Ken Bentham, a 65-year-old resident who moved in during July, expressed surprise at the lack of information regarding the flooding issues in the area. "The road behind us is Barnsley Council, the A616 is the National Highways responsibility, and the other side of the road is Sheffield City Council." As the residents of Midhopestones grapple with the aftermath of continuous flooding, they await a response from the authorities, hoping for immediate action to prevent further damage and distress.

The ‘Dragon’ lives on… Thanks to a community effort

The tale of the Wantley Dragon is to live on for years to come. Thanks to a local enthusiast who couldn’t bear to see the dragon slowly disappear. Dan Cunningham engaged with local organisations and the local MP to see if any action could be taken to restore a dilapidated ‘dragon’ that ‘sat’ at the end of a stone wall in Bitholmes Wood. After months of campaigning and liaising with various organisations. The rotten wooden Dragons head will be replaced by a hand-crafted stone head that will last for years to come. Andrew Vickers Art - stoneface has been chosen to replace the head with a more permanent sculpture to preserve this fine piece of local Folklore Work on the new Dragon will start shortly, and be in situ by the end of this year. Dan told Look Local “ It has felt like a dead-end road at times, but I guess gathering (and spending) public money has been a difficult one, certainly not my field of expertise but I'd like to thank The Steel Valley Project, The

Woodland Trust and Miriam Cates for assisting me in turning this from a few casual emails hoping something could happen to actually heading up and being an integral part of the project.” Miriam Cates said “It’s great news that local sculptor Andrew Vickers Art - stoneface has been selected to undertake the project… Stoneface is working with the Woodland Trust and Steel Valley Project, alongside local volunteers, to renovate the sculpture and breathe new life into this historic site. I’m very pleased to hear that local community groups and schools will have involvement in the project, and I’m looking forward to keeping in touch with Andrew about his progress. Thanks to everyone involved so far in this amazing community effort, and going forward I will be working with the Woodland Trust, Steel Valley Project and community groups to make sure the project has the support it needs.”

GOVT AGREES FOLLOWING STANNINGTON GAS CRISIS

Labour campaigners, including Sheffield Hallam MP Olivia Blake, are celebrating a recent move by the Government to introduce a consolidated Priority Services Register. This follows a long-standing campaign spearheaded by the MP, which she launched in the aftermath of the Stannington gas floods. During the Stannington crisis, where thousands of Stannington households were left without heating in the middle of December, Olivia Blake MP was stationed with members of her team at Lomas Hall to help coordinate support for residents. From conversations with energy and water companies, she realised that each different utility company held their own priority list, meaning that there was no one unified list of all vulnerable people. This led her to organise teams of volunteers to knock on people’s doors during the major incident, to en-

sure no vulnerable people were left without support.

In the aftermath of the crisis, Blake brought together key stakeholders—including water and energy companies, OfGem and OfWat—to coordinate a campaign for a single register shared between utility companies and local authorities. On the first anniversary of the gas floods, Blake submitted a series of Parliamentary questions to the Conservative Government asking what lessons have been learnt in its aftermath. One of these, submitted to the Cabinet Office, asked the Government to assess ‘the impactions of the Stannington gas flood in Sheffield Hallam’ and ‘make an assessment of the potential merits of creating a single consolidated priority register for all utility providers.’ The answer from Alex Burghart, Parliamentary Secretary for

the Cabinet Office, stated ‘the Government will consult on strengthening the economic regulation of the energy, water and telecommunications sectors, with proposals that include a consolidated Priority Services Register so that vulnerable people can be confident their status is recognised by all their utilities providers and support will be provided when needed.’ Blake welcomed the announcement, saying that it was great the ‘Government has recognised the benefit of a consolidated Priority Register in supporting vulnerable households.’ ‘Just over a year ago, my constituents experienced one of the most worrying events in Sheffield’s recent history. It was thanks to the tireless work of Cadent gas engineers, Sheffield City Council officers, Yorkshire Water’s teams, and an army of volunteers, that the emergency was handled as well as it was.’

Tramlines to pay more to stay Sheffield's Tramlines music festival has struck a deal to stay at its current home for another five years, writes Roland Sebestyen, Local Democracy Reporting Service The award-winning event has brought stars such as Lewis Capaldi, Noel Gallagher and Sam Fender to Hillsborough Park. However, organisers will face an increased bill for use of the green space, Sheffield City Council papers show.

The agreement between the council and organisers was reviewed after torrential rain damaged the park at last year's festival. Months of repair work was needed after 7in (18cm) of rain deluged the event's final day, attended by 40,000 people, during the city's wettest July on record. Grassed areas of the park had to be fenced off as experts in sports pitch renovation worked on the repairs and the council had warned the situation could not "be repeated in future years".

LOST CAT REUNITED AFTER 3 YEARS Amid cold weather warnings across the UK, lost and found pet database urges all pet owners to make sure their pets are microchipped Oscar, a cat from Sheffield who went missing in a snowstorm over three years ago much to the heartbreak of his owners, has been reunited with his family thanks to his microchip. Oscar disappeared in January 2020, when it snowed heavily unexpectedly and he got caught out in it. His owner, Katie Salt, 39, from Sheffield, knew something was wrong within a few hours after he didn’t return home, commenting: “Normally he would have been back when the first flake fell.” Katie and her family contacted neighbours in the immediate vicinity, who checked their CCTV, outhouses, and gardens, and put posters up in the area and on social media across various community pages. As well as reporting him as missing to Petlog, who Oscar is microchipped with, and checking her contact details were up-to-date, Katie contacted animal rescues, cat shelters and vets. “I had more phone calls and messages than I could count from strangers wondering if a cat they had seen was him – but none were,” added Katie. “I walked the streets at night for miles and hours shouting his name, rattling his food, for weeks on end. All to no avail. “We eventually concluded he must have died during the snowstorm, but we still scanned our eyes everywhere, whenever we were out driving, and to be honest this never stopped. Even after two years. “It was very upsetting. It was unlike him to go missing and we were so concerned for his wellbeing, particularly due to his age – he was 12. Years later we would still stop and check over cats that initially looked like him wherev-

er we were. It was the not knowing that was the hardest part.” Then, three years since Oscar went missing, Katie received a phone call from a vet saying they had Oscar, and that he had been living in a garden about six miles away from home. Katie was shocked: “I couldn’t believe it! The vet said Oscar had been fed and provided with an outside shelter, but had never been fully taken in by the person that was feeding him. They had never thought to get him checked for a microchip.

“It became apparent that Oscar required medical care and so they surrendered him at a vets. The vet, after hearing their story, checked him for a chip and low and behold it was our Oscar! “They immediately phoned me and I collected him within the hour. He remembered us, his name and his home. He's not stopped purring since he came home and wants cuddles all the time. He's did require surgery, but we are so happy that he's now spending his days warm at home where he belongs.”

‘Let’s Cook Together’ In an effort to promote healthy eating habits on a budget, St Saviour's Church, located on Mortomley Lane, invites up to 12 adults to join their innovative "Let’s Cook Together" 8-week activity. The community-driven initiative, supported by a grant from the SOAR’s “Let’s Build Health” program, aims to empower individuals and families with the skills to cook nutritious meals without breaking the bank. The group activity, set to take place in the church hall, commences on Friday, January 26, 2024, and will run for eight weeks until March 22. The sessions will be held every Friday from 3:30 pm to 5:45 pm. The best part? Participation is absolutely FREE. This new endeavor for adults is inspired by the success of St Saviour’s Church in organizing three years of "Let’s Cook Together" for youngsters aged 8 to 16. Notable achievements from the youth program include two boys showcasing their culinary skills at the Yorkshire Day event in the Miners’ Welfare Hall, a girl securing the position of under-manager at a local pizza outlet, and a boy successfully managing evening meals for his family, enabling his mother to pursue a university degree. According to organizers, the idea for an adult-focused initiative came about when parents and caregivers, who were invit-

ed to attend sessions with their youngsters, expressed a demand for similar opportunities. The community voiced their need for sessions geared towards adults, leading to the creation of this exclusive 8-week cooking program. The "Let’s Cook Together" initiative is not just about mastering the art of cooking; it aims to: Raise awareness and knowledge about what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. Teach participants how to cook simple, healthy meals that are nutritious and economical. Boost self-esteem and confidence. Provide support for mental health and personal and community well-being. To participate in this exciting and enriching opportunity, interested individuals are encouraged to contact Pat Webster at the provided contact details: Mobile: 07514 751 348 Email: trishawebster1967@ gmail.com Don’t miss your chance to embark on a culinary journey towards a healthier and more budget-friendly lifestyle. A big thank you

Just wanted to say a very big thank you to all you folk who are Coop members because we, Stocksbridge Community Care Group, have recently received a cheque from the Coop's Community Fund (2023) to support one of our projects: Friday Drop In. The cheque was for £3,806.80, which helps support a lunch club for locals each week. Our organisation was set up in the Valley for local people because we recognised how lonely elderly people can become, especially if they are virtually housebound. We run three ongoing projects: Friday Drop In; a Friendly Visiting Project and a Community Dementia Service.

I was so pleased to see a husband and wife with a bag and grippers picking up other people’s rubbish. It’s very kind and considerate of all those who go out in cold weather trying their hardest to keep our neighbourhood clean and tidy . This was around Charlton Brook Dam and the Blackburn Drive area. These caring people need a medal. A helpful, business We as residents local aroundfamily our own area have a massive CHAPELS responsibility toOF keepREST it lovelyatand clean, if everyone did just a little bit our neighbourhoods Barnsley Road, Bridgend, Penistone, S36 7AH would be lovely and tidy, and Dog excrement too. 0114 288 3169 BUS NO-SHOWS

info@dysonfunerals.co.uk Continued major problems with Stagecoach bus noshows not even being on their website as cancelled www.dysonfunerals.co.uk but instead either as un-tracked or late and then appearing tracked further along the route not having gone past your stop! This happened last Wednesday to the 57A outbound scheduled just before 11.30am. Everyone was waiting on Angel Street as it was ten, fifteen, twenty, twentyfive minutes late, then it suddenly showed up on the website tracked at Upperthorpe! We all had to wait until the next (57) service – which was late, of course. The 57A evidently was not running, but would-be passengers were deliberately misled that it was. This is a systematic problem with Slowcoach, presumably to fool SYPTE about actually cancelled services.

Our December figures for weekly visits are 40 people visited in their own homes and 27 wonderful volunteers. Currently, we are desperate for volunteers to visit.

Another trick they have is running the 57/57A unannounced along Manchester Road instead of going up Nanny Hill and down Carr Road. No-shows are still common – three I experienced over the Christmas period despite me rarely going for a bus.

If you would like to learn more either leave us a message on 0114 2830141 - not forgetting to leave your contact details, or email stocksbridgeccg@ gmail.com. Alternatively, Stocksbridge Community Care Group has a Facebook page where you can find our details.

Their 86 disservice is now so likely to be a no-show as effectively to be unusable. Slowcoach should not be allowed to keep their licence for running their disservices out to Deepcar/Stocksbridge -- or Chapeltown .... if anywhere hereabouts. Formal complaint to (the also useless) SYPTE and Miriam Cates pending.

A rallying call from a Tennis Club in North Sheffield launches a passionate campaign to resurface their outdoor courts. Thorncliffe Tennis Club based at the Recreational Grounds in Highgreen, seeks support for their ambitious project. The Club, a not-for-profit organisation, stands as a cornerstone for approximately 60 dedicated members, spanning from the youthful age of 8 to the inspiring maturity of players aged over 84. Among these seasoned players is a 92-year-old original founder, embodying the enduring spirit of the club. Offering both social and competitive tennis, coupled with coaching for all age groups, the club plays a pivotal role in fostering a love for the sport.

In addition to crowdfunding, Thorncliffe Tennis Club has submitted an application for a "match funding" grant from Sports England. This potential grant could provide up to £10,000, matching funds raised through the crowdfunding platform. The club believes that with the community's backing, they can not only resurface the courts but also create a safer and more enjoyable playing environment for all. Supporters are urged to contribute to this noble cause, ensuring the longevity of tennis in the northern Sheffield community. To contribute or learn more about the campaign, visit www. Crowdfunder.co.uk /p/court-resurfacing or contact Thorncliffe Tennis Club directly at. Let's come together to keep the love for tennis alive in Sheffield's north!

The 1st XV gained some benefit over the weekend with an opposed training session involving local Rugby League side Hillsborough Hawks. Both teams benefitted & learned a bit about the other code, & further joint initiatives may well follow on the back of this success. Off the field, talismanic backrower Pete Newton will have an operation this week to repair a ruptured ACL ligament, & clean out some residual meniscus damage. This will certainly curtail his involvement for the rest of the season, & the Club, whilst

In pursuit of securing the necessary funds, Thorncliffe Tennis Club has applied for sports grants, including The National Lottery Community Funding. However, these avenues alone are insufficient to cover the total costs of the resurfacing project. Undeterred, the club has made the strategic decision to launch a crowdfunding campaign, appealing to the wider community for support.

With another frustrating ‘bye’ week at the weekend, Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby will be aiming for a league double over West Yorkshire rivals, Leeds Modernians when they clash again this weekend, following Stocksbridge’s recent victory over the same opponents. Head Coach Andy Lawrence will be looking to select from a strong playing roster, with skipper, that man Adam Frith not yet fit enough to play a full part, the only absentee.

The pressing issue at hand is the dire need for resurfacing the three outdoor courts, essential for sustaining the club's vibrant tennis community. While the club has diligently set aside some funds for such projects, the substantial cost involved – a staggering £50,000 – looms large, and the club finds itself only partway toward this ambitious goal.

Stocksbridge remain 3rd in the Counties 4 Yorkshire (phase 2) South league ladder, & will look to further improve on this with winnable fixtures at Leeds Modernians at the weekend, followed by a bus trip to the East Coast to take on Hornsea RUFC on the 27th Jan, before the next scheduled home fixture against Knottingley on February 3rd, with a kick-off time at Coal Pit Lane stadium of 2.15 pm.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Town Deal Focus

Unveiled - a brand new vision rain gardens for stormwater runoff and a blue roof system which temporarily stores excess storm water – minimising the risk of flooding.

The submission of this first town centre planning application marks a major milestone in a project which has been developed by the Town Deal Board and Sheffield City Council. It is hoped that work will start on the project in spring 2024.

The Stocksbridge Town Deal Board has this week unveiled the ambitious vision for a brand new town centre – bringing jobs, investment and new community space to the heart of our town. The first planning application has now been submitted to Sheffield City Council which will deliver the striking landmark anchor building on the regenerated Manchester Road – transforming the traditional retail area of Stocksbridge with an investment totalling more than £20m and creating a future proofed town centre which meets the needs of the local community. The new building will house a state of the art new library as well as community space, classrooms for Post-16 learning and managed workspace. The development will bring new activity and investment to the town centre and create jobs and opportunities in Stocksbridge.

The master plan for the town also includes an attractive new Town Square and car parking as well as major improvements to the currently rundown precinct area with new shopfronts and paving. The Town Square will create a focal point for markets and events with the opportunity to collaborate with local groups and partners. The Town Deal Board has worked with Sheffield City Council, Rider Levett Bucknall and the award winning South Yorkshire architects CODA on the design of the new landmark building on a site partly occupied by the current library building. The striking building design has taken inspiration from the local industrial heritage architecture, as well as the more modern buildings of the neighbouring successful Fox Valley development. Stocksbridge 519 has also been designed with sustainability in mind; with photovoltaic panels as well as

Regenerating the town centre is a key priority for the Town Deal Board and the new building is at the heart of a raft of investment which will also include upgraded paving and public realm as well as the new Town Square and a shop front improvement scheme initially on the precinct area of Manchester Road. Further planning applications will be made later in the year to deliver the wider town centre projects. Town Deal Board Lead for Stocksbridge 519, Ian Sanderson, said: “We want to create something that will be a real game changer for Stocksbridge, and we believe we have the design and concept for the building which clearly shows the ambition that we all have for the town. “The building not only looks fantastic but is going to bring new activity, uses and investment to a part of our town centre which so badly needs regenerating and upgrading. The new hub will be at the heart of the newly regenerated Manchester Road, underpinning the wider investment

in the area which is needed.”

The Stocksbridge Town Deal Board has decided to prioritise securing the town centre improvements at this time. Once contracts are in place the Board will move on to the remaining projects in the programme.

Co-Chair of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board, Miriam Cates MP, said: “From the outset the community told us that the Manchester Road area was a priority and we have sought to bring forward a development which will reflects the ambition and vision that the town really deserves. “We are delighted to reach this important milestone in our anchor project for the town centre. The new hub is absolutely key to regenerating the high street and will enable other projects, including the adult education provision, to be delivered and will sit alongside the new Town Square. We look forward to the next stage of the new plans and work starting on the ground later this year.” The planning application for Stocksbridge 519 will be followed later in the spring with further applications for the new Town Square, car parking improvements, landscaping and shop front enhancements to the precinct area. The Stocksbridge Town Deal Board agreed at its meeting in November that due to increased costs and inflationary pressures that the hydrotherapy pool project at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre would not be funded in its present form. The Board also agreed that the Little Don Rivers Project would not be funded. Other projects across the programme will be phased until the costs of the high street projects are confirmed, ensuring the priority projects for the town can be delivered in the first phase of work. www.welcometostocksbridge.co.uk

REBOOTING OUR TOWN CENTRE

New Town Square Neighbouring the Library and Community Hub building is the Town Deal Board’s vision for a new Town Square. This creates a great potential to build up markets and events, working with local partners. It will be paved and landscaped with links through to other parts of the town as well as to an area of additional town centre car parking to the rear of the Town Square.

Precinct Shop Front Improvements and Paving The Town Deal team are working with local property owners on a shop front improvement project in this part of Manchester Road. From the earliest consultation sessions, the precinct area has been raised as an area in need of improvement and the plans aim to deliver a facelift to this part of the town. New paving and landscaping are also part of the proposals for the precinct area. A planning application for this part of the town centre regeneration will be submitted later in the spring.

Stocksbridge 519 - Library and Community Hub Building The new building will house a brand new library at the ground floor as well as community space and a café. The community space will be suitable for pop up facilities including banking services. The first floor will be home to managed workspace for local businesses to grow and a further floor will house classrooms for adult skills and education.

STEELS SLIP AT HOME www.looklocal.org.uk

Steels 2-2 Grantham

Report by Adam Allcroft

Stocksbridge Park Steels had a win snatched away in the final moments in a 2-2 draw against Grantham Town. Steels had a great start and were throwing everything at the Gingerbreads defence. Eventually, they got their deserved goal. Charlie Oglesby found the run of Tomas Poole with a superb ball who advanced into this box. He hit his finish across the goalkeeper and gave Stocksbridge the lead. Stocksbridge continued to play well in the first half and pressed as they looked to try and extend their lead. One big moment saw Luke Rawson head over from a good position at the near post. That’s not to say Grantham wasn’t showing something at the other end of the pitch. Rodrigo Goncalves had a palm stinger of a shot well saved by Ben Townsend. In the second half though, Stocksbridge would be punished for not taking their chances. Bradley Munns’ free kick on the left wing was curled on and Sisi Tuntunwala, who had just come on as a substitute, headed in at the far post to make things level.

Both teams would go for it to try and win the game. Both sides had chances with both Townsend and Curtis Hall proving their worth in both goals. There were times when Townsend and Hall were beaten as well, but defenders were throwing their bodies on the line to block shots on the line to try and prevent any more goals. Both teams were doing all they could to not only score, but to prevent their own defence being breached. At the end, it seemed like it was Stocksbridge would do enough. Jack Watson’s ball from the right was fantastic, looping away from the defenders before getting to Charlie Reaney on the other side of the box. His shot looped over the goalkeeper and dipped back into the net, sending the Bracken Moor faithful into delirium. But there was to be one more twist. Grantham got themselves a corner following a stunning Townsend save. It was sent to the near post and it started a melee with the ball finding its way in. No one knows who got the final touch with the goal initially being given to Sam Muggleton and later Curtis Morrison, but it did give Grantham massive equaliser.
