Women's Walking Group Flourishes In an effort to promote health, foster community connections, and provide an inclusive platform for local residents, a new women's walking group, "Stocksbridge Walkers," has emerged on WhatsApp, attracting over 40 enthusiastic participants. This vibrant community is breaking new ground by offering three distinct options within the group - women only, men only, and mixed. The women's walking group, in particular, has already gained significant traction, boasting a diverse membership of over 40 women with varying preferences for walk lengths and interests, such as dog walking. The group has become a melting pot of motivations, with some members seeking short walks, others opting for more extended adventures, and some simply desiring a chance to meet and connect with like-minded women. Reasons for joining the group range from a focus on health and fitness to weight control, while others are drawn to the social aspect, aiming to forge new friendships through shared outdoor activities. Organising walks within the Stocksbridge Walkers group is a collaborative effort, with women taking the lead in planning and coordinating activities. The convenience of opting into these walks is facilitated through the WhatsApp platform, making it easy for members to engage and participate in the outings of their choice.
"All welcome" is the group's resounding message, promoting inclusivity and emphasising that regardless of one's walking preferences or motivations, the Stocksbridge Walkers group is open to everyone. The community spirit and shared love for walking are fostering a positive and welcoming environment, encouraging locals to embrace a healthier lifestyle while building meaningful connections within the community. As the group continues to grow, it is poised to become a cornerstone of community engagement, providing a space for individuals to prioritise their wellbeing, explore the scenic surroundings of Stocksbridge, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from sharing the simple pleasure of a good walk. Linda Cawley who administers the women's only group said “we now have over 140 women signed up and walks have started already. I hadn’t envisaged so many. Women are joining up from diverse backgrounds and diverse walking skills. Some are only wanting small walks with a café thrown in and others a bit longer. Women are joining for health reasons, issues around weight or simply to meet other women and there are spin offs from that like the wild swimmers. I am completely astounded at the take up and how friendly and supportive everyone is.”

The charges relate to a burglary on Town End Road on 29 December in which a garage was reportedly broken into and three mountain bikes were allegedly stolen.
Dale Blumenstock, 42, of St Margaret’s Road, has been charged with burglary and remanded in custody. Blumenstock will further appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 29 January. Anna Dyson, 33, of Sheffield Road, has also been charged with burglary. Dyson has been bailed and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 29 January.
Police ‘shot at’ APPEAL: Appeal for information following shots fired at officers
Police detectives in Sheffield are urging the public to get in touch with information after shots were fired at officers while they responded to a concern for a woman's safety.
Armed response officers were deployed to the area and an investigation is now underway to locate those responsible for the firearms discharge.
Unarmed officers became aware of the shots from a suspected air weapon as they responded to an unrelated incident in Longley Hall Grove shortly after 12pm on 4 January.
A 25-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Nobody was injured and no damage was caused, with officers at the scene finding appropriate cover when they heard shots being fired.
Door-to-door enquiries have been carried out and there have been additional patrols in the area to reassure residents.

'Under The Bed Sale' Returns at Cupola Gallery Art enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate as Cupola Gallery prepares to launch its renowned 'Under The Bed Sale,' promising a treasure trove of affordable, original artworks. The 'Under The Bed Sale' has become a much-anticipated event, drawing praise from art enthusiasts like Kevin Duffy, who expresses, "We all need a bit of joy and beauty in our lives, and when we can have that at a bargain price, what’s not to like? I would never miss Cupola’s ‘Under The Bed Sale!’” Featuring original artworks priced from £1 to a maximum of £350, the exhibition spans a diverse range of media, including painting, printmaking, photography, glass, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, textiles, and more. In the wake of a challenging year, around 4000 pieces of original artwork have flooded into Cupola Gallery from artists across the country and beyond. Some contributors have even embarked on journeys to Sheffield, turning the delivery into a special pilgrimage to be part of this eclectic sale. The concept of the 'Under The Bed Sale' was born years ago when director Karen Sherwood visited artist Lyn Hodnett. Hodnett's decision to sell stored, out-of-date artwork under her bed inspired the unique sale. Karen Sherwood explains, "The concept arose after the director, Karen Sherwood, visited artist, Lyn Hodnett, many years ago." The sale has grown exponentially over the years, taking up two of the four gallery spaces due to the sheer volume of pieces. Karen
Sherwood humorously notes that it makes the Royal Academy Summer exhibition look sparse. Artists from all backgrounds, regardless of their career stage, are welcome to participate. The sale boasts a remarkable diversity of works, and Karen Sherwood emphasizes, "For anyone that enjoys a rummage, this is not an event to be missed. There is so much work; it is definitely worth a trip." The 'Under The Bed Sale' has seen contributors ranging from an 8-year-old to a 97-yearold, showcasing the inclusivity and broad appeal of this unique event. Works have arrived from the USA, Australia, and even the same street, making it a truly global celebration of art. "One of the joys of the sale is that we never know what is going to arrive. The diversity of work never ceases to amaze us. For anyone who enjoys a rummage, this is not an event to be missed. There is so much work; it is definitely worth a trip – as you cannot possibly see it all, even in several hours, which is why so many people visit several times during the course of the three-week-long sale. But once it is gone – it is gone! Don’t miss out and save the dates!" says Karen Sherwood, Director of Cupola Gallery. Running from January 13 to February 4, the exhibition will take place at Cupola Gallery, located at 178a Middlewood Road, Sheffield S6 1SB. The gallery will be open from Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and on Sundays from 12 pm to 4 pm on January 14, 21, 28, and February 4.

Community Activity Leader Training Programme In a bid to enhance community engagement and foster leadership skills, a community training group has secured funding from the North LAC to conduct a Community Activity Leader training programme at its Campus. The initiative aims to empower individuals interested in working with communities either as volunteers or in paid positions. The overarching objectives of the training program include: Introduction to the Role of an Activity Leader (Facilitator): Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the responsibilities associated with being an Activity Leader. Group Dynamics: Focusing on the intricacies of working with groups, the program will guide individuals on effective collaboration in community settings. Communication Skills: Emphasis will be placed on honing communication skills tailored for community work, ensuring effective interaction with diverse groups of people. Activity Planning and Presentation: Participants will learn the art of planning, preparing, and presenting engaging activity sessions in a community setting.
You can drop in at any time, free hot drinks will be provided. According to the Office for National Statistics, 91% of adults in Great Britain reported an increase in their cost of living in October-November 2022.
Interested individuals or organisations keen on participating in this transformative training program can reach out for more information or to secure a spot by contacting Neil at neil@westwood2015.org. This initiative signifies a collaborative effort to strengthen community ties and empower individuals to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of their localities.
Low-income households spend a larger proportion than average on energy and food, so are more affected by price increases. Food bank charities are reporting an increase in demand: the Trussell Trust reported that in April-September 2022, they provided almost 1.3 million emergency food parcels, a third more than in the same period in 2021 and 50% more than pre-pandemic levels. The city council have dedicated staff across the area to help and support those in need; the community helpline number is 0114 2734567 or www.sheffield.gov.uk/cost-of-living. Sheffield also has a large network of Welcome Spaces, which offer a free cuppa, somewhere warm and a chance to socialise and meet others: w w w.vas.org .u k/shef f ield-liv ing-cr isis-mapofsupport
The grants are available to new businesses or existing traders as long as they do not currently operate in the
town. Barnsley Council said traders would be required to join the National Market Traders' Federation, the cost of which could be reclaimed through the grant. The scheme is similar to one
which operated in Goldthorpe. It saw new businesses take up pitches at the town's new Horse and Groom Square, the council said.

Woman loses over BARRIER REMINDER £19,000 in new scam BRIDGE COMMUNITY SHOP GLAZING
• Installers of ‘A’ Rated Energy Saving PVC
People are being urged to make themselves aware of a new courier fraud scam after a Sheffield woman lost over £19,000. The woman fell victim to the scam in December after being contacted by an unknown male on an unknown number who claimed to be a police officer at a station based in London. She ended up being scammed out of £19,500 with money taken out online in her name and several online payments made to the scammers.
Courier fraud involves victims receiving a phone call from a criminal pretending to be from the police or another official organisation, such as a bank. The fraudster claims there is an issue with the victim's bank account, or requests the victim's help in an ongoing bank or police investigation. Victims are then asked to withdraw a large sum of money which will be collected by a courier for 'evidence'. Financial Fraud Protect Officer Andrew Foster said:
"These fraudsters are callous and calculated and it is devastating to see people fall victim to courier fraud scams. "The victim lost a huge amount of money just before Christmas and we really want to spread the word and make people aware so no others fall victim to this cruel scam."

ILLEGAL VIRGINITY
TESTING
Girls, aged 6 affected It’s 2024 and some women and girls nationwide are sadly still being sent for illegal ‘virginity testing’.
Support is available for victims, and anyone who has information about this happening is urged to report it.
South Yorkshire Police have received a report from a local GP who had been visited by a teenage victim and a family member.
Virginity tests are carried out illegally to ‘prove’ that a woman or girl is a virgin. In the UK, virginity testing has been known to be used to show that a girl is a virgin by identifying the presence of the hymen for religious or cultural practices. Hymenoplasty is the practice of creating an artificial layer of tissue to imitate the hymen. The illegal practices can cause serious long-term physical and mental trauma to victims.
The GP was asked for a virginity test so it could be ‘proved’ to the victim’s boyfriend that she was still a virgin. Women and girls aged 13 to 30 are most at risk of virginity testing and hymenoplasty, also known as hymen repair, but it is known to affect girls as young as six. Virginity testing and hymenoplasty are forms of brutal violence against women and girls. They are rarely a standalone incident and are often linked to other offences that seek to harm and limit the freedoms of women and girls, such as forced marriage and honour-based abuse.
Since 2022, under the Health and Care Act 2022, it is a criminal offence to carry out, offer or aid and abet virginity testing and hymenoplasty in the UK. This includes accompanying a woman or girl to a test or a UK national to carry out virginity testing outside of the UK. The offence carries a maximum term of five years in prison.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Local News
Your Letters Dear Editor If there was clear purpose and good management of town's fund spending I don't think, after all these years, we would need the whole page of explanation we were given in last week's Look Local. Miriam Cates' own Tory Party have drastically and destructively defunded bodies like Sure Start, the Youth Service, South Yorkshire passenger transport executive and the council itself so people and organisations who could have used the money well have gone and not been replaced. Now we are already seeing money wasted on an unnecessary car park and over-constructed paths. They say the next thing we need is demolition of the library and a new 'hub' building. Perhaps it could be used to house a museum of what we had before it was destroyed by the tories' austerity. Yours Peter Morton Hunshelf Park
Inconsiderate parking It would appear that a great number of so-called drivers are either not aware or not bothered about parking in a proper fashion.for instance,on numerous occasions around the ideal homes estate in Deepcar I regularly see cars parked with all 4 wheels on the pavement especially on the tactile crossings which, the car owners seem to think is there for them. These blister style areas are for the safety of visually impaired people only and should be kept clear at all times for obvious reasons, they are on the footpath.( the clue is in the title) Steve.

Supertram to lose more than £6m Supertram in South Yorkshire is expected to lose more than £6m in the first year after it is brought back under public control, writes Nathan Hyde for The Yorkshire Post. Stagecoach has run the light rail network since 1997, but in March it will hand over control to a company set up and owned by South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA). Mayor Oliver Coppard has said there are plans to improve services, making them more affordable and reliable, and expand the 29km network beyond Sheffield and Rotherham. However, Supertram has not been profitable since 2019, due to a signifi-

cant drop in passenger numbers, and millions of pounds of funding is needed to replace ageing trams and upgrade tracks and stations. SYMCA said it will cost around £23.6m to run the network in 2024/25 – with around 60 per cent of that covering wages – but it is only due to generate £17.3m of income. It said the new operator will need to cover the £6.3m loss with taxpayer-funded subsidies, but it is working to “decrease its dependence on the public purse”. SYMCA is expecting energy prices to fall in the coming years and said there are plans to boost ticket sales, adapt to changing travel patterns and cut costs.
Sheffield dad died after medics failed to investigate lump, inquest hears An inquest into the death of 54-year-old father-of-two Paul Johnson found there were multiple ‘missed opportunities’ that could have saved or prolonged his life and that neglect was a contributing factor. Mr Johnson died at the Macmillan Palliative Care Unit at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital on 18 January 2023, just a few months after being diagnosed with advanced cancer. Returning a narrative conclusion at an inquest into his death, which took place in September at the Medico-Legal Centre in Sheffield, assistant coroner Carl Fitch concluded that neglect contributed to Mr Johnson’s death. He also said seven separate medical professionals had the opportunity to arrange further investigation and treatment, especially those who dealt with Mr Johnson’s discharge. Suffering with abdominal pain and jaundice, plasterer Mr Johnson – who had a medical history of alcoholic hepatitis, decompensated alcohol liver disease, chronic pancreatitis, and type 1 diabetes – attended the Northern General
Hospital’s A&E department in November 2020. Despite a CT scan identifying a lump, which could have represented cancer, this was never followed up. An ‘orange alert’, which is used for urgent or unexpected significant findings, was not attached to a report of the CT scan’s findings by radiologists. Mr Johnson’s condition gradually improved and he was discharged in December 2020. In November 2022, Mr Johnson was admitted to Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital to investigate left-sided weakness. An MRI scan confirmed Mr Johnson had at least 18 lesions in his brain and a CT scan showed the lump reported on the scan two years earlier had more than trebled in size. A biopsy of the lump confirmed Mr Johnson had non-small cell lung cancer, which had spread to other parts of his body, including the brain, and was incurable. He was transferred to the Macmillan Palliative Care Unit at Northern General Hospital in December 2022.
Mr Johnson’s sister Kay Hemming, brother-in-law Christopher Hemming, mum Janet Johnson and dad Mac Johnson said: “It has been extremely difficult re-living Paul’s final two years and hearing that there were multiple chances where his lung cancer could have been diagnosed and treated, which could have extended his time with us. “To us, it always felt like medical professionals believed Paul wasn’t worth treating and that his health issues were entirely his fault due to how he suffered with alcohol problems. It breaks our heart knowing that in the lead up to his death, Paul felt completely worthless. “Life will never be the same for us without Paul; losing him has left a huge void in our family and while nothing can ever bring him back to us at least he is now at peace and no longer suffering.”

Nation’s largest dog census reveals the dogs we just Labr-adore
When it comes to the nation’s favourite dog breed, Labradors still top the table, according to the UK’s biggest survey of dog owners, Dogs Trust’s National Dog Survey. Earlier this year, Dogs Trust asked dog lovers across the UK to tell them about their pets, and over 244,000 people responded, revealing information about almost 350,000 dogs. Although the nation still loves a crossbreed, accounting for just under 11% of dogs reported in the survey, when it comes to specific breeds, Labradors remain the number one choice of UK dog lovers, closely followed by Cocker Spaniels and Cockapoos. Other breeds making the top ten include Jack Russell Terrier, Border Collies and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. As well as the most popular breed, the National Dog Survey revealed the dog names loved by the nation. Taking the top spot for female dogs was Poppy, followed by Bella and Luna, with Alfie, Charlie and Milo topping the table for boys. Willow, Lola, Buddy and Barney also made it into the top ten. Full results of the National Dog Survey will be released in January, and the information gained as part of this survey, the largest dog “census” of its type in the UK, will help the charity continue to shape its services to support the estimated 13 million households who own dogs across the country. Following the results of last year’s National Dog Survey, Dogs Trust set up its Behaviour Support Line, providing free over the phone advice and guidance for owners struggling with their dog’s problem behaviours.
Barnsley College welcomed Jimmy Gittins to speak about his horrific career-ending injury and the impact it had on his mental health.
utes, they listened and took something from it; they might use it once, twice, or even every day, but if we can make that difference to one person, then it’s a win!”
The ex-rugby league player was one of two presenters from the charity, State of Mind, who spoke to students to mark International Men’s Day and make a positive difference in the well-being and lives of men and boys. Jimmy was accompanied by former Super League Rugby League referee, Ian Smith.
Local gym owner and motivational speaker, Pete Shaw, also spoke to students and touched on issues such as mindset, mental health and mental and physical motivation.
In the mental fitness sessions, Jimmy shared his journey from breaking his neck in two places which left him paralysed from the chest down and changed his life forever. Jimmy talked about focusing on his mental health and how he formed an award-winning specialist rehabilitation unit. Jimmy, who has been a mental health ambassador for State of Mind for the last decade, said: “It’s important for us to come into schools and colleges to get the message around mental health out to younger people for a culture change – if we all keep sitting on the stigma that’s very much around mental health then it’s never going to change. “The students we spoke to were fantastic! For 45 min-
Pete spoke about his work with a client, Jonathan, who with Pete's help and support, has lost an incredible 20 stone. He also spoke about at an event he organised which raised over £10,000 for Barnsley Hospice. Pete, owner of Barnsley Barbell, said: “I loved attending the college for their International Men’s Day – it was an honour, a privilege and an amazing experience to share with the students a little bit about my story. “I think the biggest thing I would like people to take away is that the past doesn’t matter, so you can write a new story starting from today and ultimately you’re the lead role in this life whatever it is you choose to do, you can go out and do it, don’t be held back by what other people think and listen to the inner voice that guides you on whatever you want to do in life.”

STOCKSBRIDGE GO TOP A great start to the New Year by Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby as they dusted off their Christmas excesses to defeat visitors Leeds Modernians 21pts – 3pts in an entertaining clash at the Coal Pit Lane.
Call Rita to apply:
The overall top four will bag themselves a place in the Grand Prix qualifying rounds later this year whilst a further spot will be available from the FIM Oceania Championship which takes place at the end of January.
The pitch, heavy underfoot, was passed as playable, and the freshly cut grass gave the playing surface a fluffy look. Despite a string of postponements and some player availability issues, Head Coach Andy Lawrence was able to field a strong squad on a sunny Winter’s afternoon, with club skipper, that man Adam Frith passing a late fitness test to take his place on the replacements bench. This victory takes Stocksbridge to an unlikely top spot in the league ladder as the New Year sees a Regional Phase of the Counties 4 Yorkshire competition come into play. Playing up the slope in the first half, the home side struck early and decisively when ‘Clock Tower’ Andy Beal, powered over from close range from a smartly taken penalty by evergreen playmaker Ricky Christopherson. Veteran place kicker Scotty Bowskill was on point with the conversion to increase the lead, and again a few minutes later adding a penalty goal for a ruck infringement by the eager Leeds forwards. A powerful midfield break by Saddington was well supported by the reliable Pearson, who put flying youngster Leary away for
what seemed a certain score until the visiting cover defence swarmed around him and the chance went begging. The visitors enjoyed a period of possession and territory and only some determined defence by the Blue Wall kept them tryless, their only reward was a penalty kick for another ruck offence. Stocksbridge kept the pressure on and the trusty boot of Bowskill added 2 further penalties to leave the half time score : Stocksbridge Rugby 16pts – Leeds Modernians 3pts. The 2nd half was a bit of a scrappy affair, with both sides eventually running out of gas, Leeds pressed hard but again Stocksbridge defended manfully with Kerr, Beal and Pearson putting in the tackles. Lawrence beefed up the pack with the burly Gary Woodcock and ‘slammin’ Sam Whitaker added to the fray, and Jack Spencer made a fantastic interception to save a certain score for the visitors, and with the field at his mercy ran fully 80 metres, before running out of steam and being caught close to the try line, from the resulting break down, Stocksbridge recycled the ball and Bowskill, with a deft cross-field kick found the on-rushing Jack Leary to collect and score in the other corner. This time too far out for the conversion to count.
There was still time for the visiting scrum half to take a quick tap penalty and catch the home defence out to register a converted try, but it was too little too late as the final score of : Stocksbridge Rugby 21pts – Leeds Modernians 10pts. A great start to the year for the Stocksbridge club, ‘we dusted the cobwebs off well and produced a pretty good all-round performance’, said Skipper Frith afterwards, before adding, ‘We have players to come back into the squad, the younger guys are learning quickly and the old heads are all contributing. We have a lot to look forward to’. The Asphalt Grid Systems Man of the Match award went again to youngster Josh Kerr for a terrier like display, turning ball over and a high offensive work rate, whilst Leary, Beal and old stager Bowskill can be pleased with their efforts. Stocksbridge have a bye next weekend and will return to action on 20th January with the return fixture at Leeds Modernians, followed by an away day to the East Coast to play Hornsea the week after. The Club are looking to put a bus on for players and supporters for this trip, so please contact the club if you wish to join the trip, all are welcome. The next scheduled home fixture is on 3rd February where the visitors will be Knottingley RUFC.

I have mixed emotions today, we were quite good especially in the first half. We were patient, organised that’s exactly how we’d told them to set up and I thought we deserved to be one-nil at half time

Their second goal was a hard pill to swallow because we have asked for a substitution while the ball was actually in the stand. The liner’s acknowledged me, he’s put his flag up and shouted over to the referee. Then Albion have took a quick throw in and the referee has allowed it to continue. They’ve ended up with an attacking corner and scored. His excuse was he didn’t hear the liner shout him, and it ended up two-two. Cricket signing announced Stocksbridge Cricket Club is thrilled to announce the latest addition to their squad, as the talented bowler Josh Stevens joins the team through a loan agreement/dual registration with his current club, New Mills CC in the Derbyshire and Cheshire Premier League. Having recently relocated to Stocksbridge, Josh brings with him a wealth of cricketing prowess and experience. The decision to join Bracken Moor comes after facing the challenges of a lengthy commute, with 80+ mile round trips proving to be a hurdle for consistent play in recent years, especially considering his commitments to a young family. Despite the sporadic appearances in recent times, Josh Stevens is set to bolster the Bracken Moor outfit's bowling lineup significantly. His impressive track record at New Mills CC includes a commendable 89 wickets at an average of just 17.4. Notably, his standout performance of 6-21 against Dinting showcases the kind of quality that Stocksbridge is eager to integrate into their squad. Club officials express their excitement over the acquisition, anticipating that Josh's skills and experience will be invaluable to the team's success in the upcoming season. Stocksbridge Cricket Club is looking forward to the positive impact Josh will undoubtedly bring to the team, and are eager to witness his contributions on the field. As the club extends a warm welcome to their newest member, anticipation builds for an exciting season ahead with Josh Stevens in the Bracken Moor lineup.
