Women's Walking Group Flourishes In an effort to promote health, foster community connections, and provide an inclusive platform for local residents, a new women's walking group, "Stocksbridge Walkers," has emerged on WhatsApp, attracting over 40 enthusiastic participants. This vibrant community is breaking new ground by offering three distinct options within the group - women only, men only, and mixed. The women's walking group, in particular, has already gained significant traction, boasting a diverse membership of over 40 women with varying preferences for walk lengths and interests, such as dog walking. The group has become a melting pot of motivations, with some members seeking short walks, others opting for more extended adventures, and some simply desiring a chance to meet and connect with like-minded women. Reasons for joining the group range from a focus on health and fitness to weight control, while others are drawn to the social aspect, aiming to forge new friendships through shared outdoor activities. Organising walks within the Stocksbridge Walkers group is a collaborative effort, with women taking the lead in planning and coordinating activities. The convenience of opting into these walks is facilitated through the WhatsApp platform, making it easy for members to engage and participate in the outings of their choice.
"All welcome" is the group's resounding message, promoting inclusivity and emphasising that regardless of one's walking preferences or motivations, the Stocksbridge Walkers group is open to everyone. The community spirit and shared love for walking are fostering a positive and welcoming environment, encouraging locals to embrace a healthier lifestyle while building meaningful connections within the community. As the group continues to grow, it is poised to become a cornerstone of community engagement, providing a space for individuals to prioritise their wellbeing, explore the scenic surroundings of Stocksbridge, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from sharing the simple pleasure of a good walk. Linda Cawley who administers the women's only group said “we now have over 140 women signed up and walks have started already. I hadn’t envisaged so many. Women are joining up from diverse backgrounds and diverse walking skills. Some are only wanting small walks with a café thrown in and others a bit longer. Women are joining for health reasons, issues around weight or simply to meet other women and there are spin offs from that like the wild swimmers. I am completely astounded at the take up and how friendly and supportive everyone is.”
