SHEEP VANDALISED
'Good Samaritan' murder accused in court TOWN DEAL UPDATE - PAGE 06
DIP INTO THE NEW YEAR- PAGE 05
A 23-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering a father-of-two who was hit by a car as he tried to help a stranger in Sheffield, writes Kevin Shoesmith for the BBC. Chris Marriott, 46, died while giving first aid to a woman lying unconscious in a street in the Burngreave area of the city on Wednesday. Hassan Jhangur, of Whiteways Road, Sheffield, appeared at the city's magistrates' court on Saturday. He is also charged with five counts of attempted murder. The case was adjourned until Tuesday when Mr Jhangur is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court. He has been remanded in custody.
On Friday evening, South Yorkshire Police said a 32-year-old woman remained in hospital in a serious condition.
Officers said Mr Marriott - who they described as a "Good Samaritan" - had been walking with his sons, aged six and eight, when the incident happened. He was among several people, including an off-duty midwife who had also stopped to help, hit by a car on College Close, the force said. Mr Marriott died at the scene. In a statement, his family said he was "a wonderful husband, dad, brother, uncle - and friend to many".

SHEEP VANDALISED Sheep statues on a popular walking trail vandalised with "mindless" graffiti
The granite figures, dotted around the Penistone Art Trail, were sprayed with pink and blue paint between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, it is believed, writes Hayley Coyle for BBC News. A local councillor, who shared photos of the sheep online, said it was "disappointing" and the perpetrators should "get a more productive hobby". The 11 statues, which were created to "bring visitors flocking" to the bustling market town, can be spotted in amusing poses near various landmarks. Among them is a sheep on roller-skates outside the leisure centre and a footballkit wearing one at Penistone Church Football Club.
Barnsley Council said the project's aim was to encourage people to spend more time on the high street and to explore the local area. Councillor Hannah Kitching, Barnsley Liberal Democrats leader for Penistone West, told the BBC she was "disappointed" with the vandalism because the people of Penistone "respect" the art trail and that ruining the statues "achieves nothing". She said: "If you spoil the place you live in, you have spoilt it for yourself, your friends and your family. "I would say to the vandals, treat your own things how you like, but these statues are not yours, they belong to the public."

DIP INTO THE NEW YEAR Sheffield Dippers Dive into Men's Mental Health with Refreshing New Approach
In a bid to address men's mental health issues, Sheffield Dippers are making waves with their unique approach, inviting individuals to dip their toes into a refreshing new group. Tom, one of the founding members of the Sheffield Dippers, emphasised that their core mission remains unchanged. "Nothing's changed; we still have the same purpose. We want as many men as possible to join us on our journey and benefit from this outdoor therapy," he stated. The group's focus revolves around fostering mental clarity and building a sense of brotherhood among its members. Tom believes that these elements are a formidable force in tackling the challenges of mental health. "Mental clarity and brotherhood are some force to be reckoned with, and the rest is speaking for itself," he asserted. Week by week, the Sheffield Dippers are witnessing a surge in participation and support, going from strength to strength. The group's activities aim to not only provide outdoor therapy but also to enhance both physical and mental resilience. As the Sheffield Dippers continue to create ripples in their community, their commitment to men's mental health remains unwavering. The refreshing approach they bring to the table has garnered attention and support, encouraging more individuals to take the plunge into this innovative form of outdoor therapy.

Town Deal Update for 2024
With Co-Chair Miriam Cates MP and Cllr Julie Grocutt, Sheffield City Council Miriam Cates MP and Cllr Julie Grocutt have both been key members of the Stocksbridge Town Deal Board since Stocksbridge was first announced in 2019 as one of the 101 UK towns invited to bid for a share of the £3.6 bn Government funding. Miriam is Co-Chair and Project Champion of the Hopper Bus Project and Julie is Project Champion for the Oxley Park Improvement Project and the Tracks and Activities Project. Here they update Look Local readers on the key questions - what is happening next in the delivery of this game-changing investment in Stocksbridge and where the money is going to be spent.
Q: Why hasn’t work started yet on the town centre projects? Cllr Julie Grocutt: We are really pleased to have seen work start this autumn on the Oxley Park Improvement Project but we do know that everyone is keen to see the major improvements which are coming to the town centre – as are all the Board members. The town centre projects are going to create jobs and really transform the Manchester Road area, but these are complex and, in some cases, commercially sensitive projects which involve working with some existing businesses and property owners and purchasing land and properties. So, whilst it may seem that progress is slow, please be assured that a great deal of work is happening in the background. This is a once-in-ageneration opportunity for the town and we want to get this right and create a real catalyst for further investment and development.
Q: When will we see construction start in the town centre? Miriam Cates MP: The largest investment on Manchester Road is the new Library and Community Hub building – the working ti-
tle for the new building is Stocksbridge 519 and the planning application for the new building is ready to be submitted. We’re hopeful work could then start in late spring 2024 on the ground. There are a lot of moving parts in delivering the new building but it’s going to be a great catalyst to creating new jobs and opportunities. Not only will it house a new modern library but also a managed workspace and a learning and skills hub as well as a flexible community space where we can house facilities including pop-up banking services.
Q: What does the Town Deal Board see as the priorities for the town? Cllr Julie Grocutt: The town centre projects, regenerating Manchester Road, came out as a huge priority when we held our public consultation sessions, and that’s certainly reflected in the conversations with local people that I have through my role as a local councillor on Sheffield City Council and Stocksbridge Town Council. We have been fortunate in Stocksbridge to have received private investment in recent years through the Fox Valley development, but we want to see a town centre that is fit for purpose and can also attract businesses and customers. Town centres are changing and evolving and that’s really accelerated through the pandemic in lots of ways. But people still want to connect and collaborate, and we want to create the right environment to future-proof our town centre. We want to encourage traditional markets and attractive landscaping and outdoor areas but also create the right environment for businesses to establish and grow. As well as the town centre we know how important the Hopper Bus project is to the community in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone and that will be moving ahead at pace as soon as we have the final piece of funding confirmed by South Yorkshire’s Mayor.
Q: What have been the biggest challenges for the Board? Miriam Cates MP: Rising inflation and
the cost of living is hitting the Town Deal budget hard. We were given the opportunity to bid for investment through the Towns Fund and awarded £24.1m which was confirmed by the Government early in 2023. It’s a fantastic amount of money for our community - but construction and material costs have increased to a level we couldn’t have imagined when we set out on this journey. Even with additional funding from SYMCA (South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority), we have had to really scrutinise the impact of each project and the benefits they will unlock for the wider community and prioritise what we can deliver. We want to focus on and secure those key projects which are going to make the biggest difference to our community and developing a high street that everyone from Stocksbridge can be proud of is mission-critical. This means there will be some tough decisions ahead and some projects will be delayed until we can fully understand the costs across the high street projects. Colleagues working on Town Deal projects across the country are facing similar challenges and are having to reprioritise their projects.
Q: Will all ten projects be delivered? Cllr Julie Grocutt: All our projects started out as concepts which had indicative costs attached to them. Once they were approved, they had to be worked up from concept into detailed, deliverable projects. Detailed surveys and design work and engagement have obviously resulted in us making changes to all these projects to some degree. But the inflationary pressures are the factor that has had the biggest impact and constrained us and as a result, we have had to look hard at our priorities. We now also have to phase projects so we can ensure that our priorities are secured and delivered first. We still have the ambition to deliver the programme, but we need to contract the works and secure the town centre projects along with the Hopper Bus first. We will then review where we are, and
if budgets allow, deliver the remainder of the programme although we do know that due to inflation some of the projects will need to be further modified and can’t proceed in their current form. This is difficult and disappointing for everyone involved but is a fact of life and a consequence of inflation. Our budgets were set in 2019, and 2019 money doesn’t buy things at 2024’s prices – I think we are all experiencing this in our personal and household finances and this is exactly the same for the Towns Fund. It is a hard problem we are trying to square. It will leave certain groups of people disappointed, and it is disappointing for us all but is a fact of life and is where we are. We of course know that some local groups and lobbyists have been frustrated that the Board has made certain decisions to invest in certain projects, but under the conditions we face, we must make the best decisions for Stocksbridge that deliver on our communities’ priorities. We can’t get more funding, and the funding isn’t linked to inflation therefore the simple fact is the funding doesn’t go as far as we would all wish! Having said all this, we are totally focused on what is best for the town and what will deliver more, and better, jobs and opportunities for our community, our businesses, and future generations. I am really confident that the high street scheme we have settled on, which will be shared with everyone very shortly, will excite everyone and give us all a high street offer we will be proud of.
How can people find out more or get in touch with the Town Deal Board? We have a dedicated Town Deal website which can be found at www.welcometostocksbridge.co.uk as well as social media accounts on Facebook and X (Twitter) and you can also sign up for an e-newsletter. We are planning some drop-in sessions for local businesses in the coming weeks from the Town Deal office at Stocksbridge Library so please look out for further details in Look Local and on our website.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments.

Your Letters Christmas Eve Collection Thank You! The singing of carols around the Christmas tree on Millennium Green, Oughtibridge, at 7.00 pm Christmas Eve, is a popular annual event kindly supported by Oughtibridge Brass Band. It is organised by Oughtibridge Christian Council (OCC) and this year was led by Terry Powell from Worrall Independent Chapel. The collection taken at the Carol Singing amounted to £262.44. As announced, this will again be split between Oughtibridge Brass Band and the Sheffield based charity, HARC, who provide meals and other support to homeless people over the Christmas/New Year holiday period. A big ‘Thank You’ to all who contributed so generously, and may we wish you a happy and safe 2024. Chris Nicholson, On behalf of Oughtibridge Christian Council.

Prescriptions… I was interested to read the piece in look local dated 21st December, where Dr Zac McMurray quoted from a written response that “No recent complaints had been received from GP’s or patients” which is strange because I made a complaint back in May 2023 which was taken up by my local MP. It makes me think that the Health and Wellbeing board doesn’t listen to the people at this end of town. I hope Kathryn has opened their ears and they will reconsider their position in the New Year Kind Regards, David Mell

Also allow me to say once again a word of thanks to the Salvation Army Band who go to Morrisons in Hillsborough prior to Christmas to play an excellent selection of carols, this also is appreciated by many people. Yours Faithfully Mrs B Wilkinson.

’DREAM’ JOBS SECURED FOR TRIO OF STUDENTS
More than 2,000 people have signed a petition against a new activities hub at a Sheffield park.
According to campaigners, the new hub at Hillsborough Park would be built on green space and visitors would be required to pay to use parts of it, write Lucy Ashton & Victoria Scheer for BBC News. Critics have labelled the plans "a privatisation of parks" and said green spaces should be open and free for all. Meanwhile, Sheffield City Council said the proposal was "in the [park's] best interest". Last year, the authority decided to bring in company Courtside CIC, which currently operates tennis courts on behalf of the council, to develop and run the hub. The authority stressed it was not "selling off park land" but rather "finding ways to invest to provide services and activities". Under the plans, the current site will be resurfaced and redesigned for football and court sports.
Chargeable facilities will include new tennis and netball courts, covered padel tennis, mini golf, accessible toilets and an indoor area for groups and events. Friends of Hillsborough Park's treasurer, Andy Chaplin, said the development would mean less free-to-use space. He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "At the moment, particularly with all the grass out of action, the tarmac multi-use games area (MUGA) is the place most people would use to go and play." Mr Chaplin said the park's current tarmac area would reduce in size and be difficult to access for disabled cycling group, Cycling 4 All. Courtside CIC said there would be special provision for disability cycling and those learning to ride bikes, skateboards or scooters. A Courtside spokesperson said the goal of the activity hub was "to support residents in being physically and socially active".
Three talented former Barnsley College students have bagged their dream careers and secured employment at the Outstanding College where they did their training. Megan Ascough, Luke Swaby and Luke Story were part of the college’s first cohort of Level 6 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) students and have paved the way for future students by securing teaching roles in the college’s Esports, Sports and Graphic Design departments where they completed their placements. Luke Swaby and Megan spent six years at the college, completing their Level 3 Diplomas, Foundation Degrees and Top-Up Degrees, before studying the oneyear PGCE course in 2022, whilst Luke Story returned to the College to study the PGCSE course after completing a Graphic Design degree at Leeds Beckett University. The PGCE course has allowed the trio to ensure they develop the required skills, knowledge, and professional values to be highly effective teachers, along with
gaining experience that will assist them in teaching the next generation of students. Luke Swaby, who has joined the Esports department, said: “I am excited to start my employment at the college. The staff have made me feel welcome and have provided me with support fitting into the team over my time in my PGCE. “I am looking forward to developing the Esports department and passing on my experiences and knowledge to the next generation.” Rikki Paylor, Teaching and Learning Team Leader at the college, said: “We have a great year with our first cohort of PGCE students, they have really bought into the programme and have significantly developed throughout their teacher training year. “The cohort has successfully applied for and been appointed in teaching roles at the college, which is a testament to their hard work and development as educators, now employed within an Outstanding college. We are really looking forward to following their careers as they progress into the world of Further Education.”

Woman's Inspiring Weight Loss Journey Triumphs Over Lockdown Challenges
Christine sheds more than 7st In August 2020, as the world grappled with the challenges of lockdown, Christine bravely decided to confront a longstanding struggle with her weight. Seeking support, she joined her local Slimming World group, embarking on a transformative journey that led her to shed an incredible 7st 12lb. Initially uncertain and hesitant, Christine entered the group with no specific expectations, apprehensive about the prospect of others scrutinising her weight. To her surprise, she found a warm and supportive community that focused not on numbers on a scale but on embracing the Slimming World plan and moving forward together. Reflecting on her experience, Christine shared, "No one discussed weights; instead, we focused on ways to move forward following the Slimming World plan. I was amazed at how easy it was to follow, with delicious meals like Sunday roasts and Spag bol, coupled with effective preparation and forward planning. I felt like I was eating more and losing weight simultaneously." Setting attainable goals week by week, Christine steadily progressed until December 27, 2021, when she reached her target weight. Now a target member for two years, she expressed immense pride in her accomplishments, which include conquering challenges like walking Ribblehead Viaduct and scaling Mount Snowdon.
The emotional significance of her achievements was not lost on Christine, who admitted, "Climbing Mount Snowdon brought me to tears; I couldn't believe I had come this far! Now, I enjoy walking my dogs without struggling, and clothes shopping is pure joy. I still indulge in cakes and treats, ensuring I don't miss out on anything, but I am now confident in my ability to control my food much easier." Expressing gratitude, Christine credited her consultant and fellow members for the unwavering encouragement that played a pivotal role in her success. She emphasised that her life is now filled with more joy and enjoyment, thanks to the newfound confidence she has in managing her health and well-being. Despite reaching her target weight, Christine continues to attend the Tuesday evening 6:30 pm group at The Pen Nook in Deepcar, under the guidance of her dedicated consultant, Lauren Doyle. Her commitment to the Slimming World community showcases not only her personal triumph but also her desire to inspire and support others on their weight loss journeys.

Two events, which happened over one weekend, raised £2,000 and will help Rowan reach an astounding £10,000 raised in total in his first year as an Ambassador for The Children’s Hospital Charity. Rowan said: “The events were good fun. They provided a unique opportunity to meet more people from around the city while we celebrated a huge milestone in my motor racing career and raised money for a very deserving cause.” A similar event is due to take place at the end of January at Meadowhall.

AMBLER’S REVENGE Tom Fryer’s current good form continued as he comfortably won the Ambles Revenge trail race held midway between Christmas and New Year. Conditions were tough for the 275 runners that completed the hilly and demanding eight mile course which traverses the Hunshelf boundary near Stocksbridge. The route is a mix of woodland, cross country and quiet country lanes. Tom’s time of 55-50 was half a minute in front of his nearest rival. There was further success for Penistone with Suzanne McGill picking up first place in the ladies over45 age category, Bill Phillips claiming top spot in the men’s over75 age group and Barabara Haigh grabbing gold in the ladies over75 age category. There were further podium positions for Keith Gordon (second over75
man), Heather Lindley (third over60 lady) and Robin Clough (third over50 man). On the fells Steve Sanders completed the Stoop Fell race at Haworth in 42-28 which gave him 34th place in the field of 149 runners. On the parkrun scene it was a busy period with additional parkruns being held on New Year’s day. Saturday saw Graihagh Turner take first place at the Hillsborough parkrun. Suzanne McGill picked up second place at the Brickfield parkrun in Dublin. A number of parkrun milestones were achieved by David Needham (400), Tom Fryers (300) and Sarah Clough (100). Stocksbridge PS 2-1 Sheffield FC
Report by Adam Allcroft Photos by Myra Little. Left: Thomas Poole Right: Jack Watson Stocksbridge Park Steels ended the year the way they started it, by beating Sheffield FC. The game started as well as it could have for Stocksbridge. A poor pass was intercepted by Tomas Poole on the half way line and he pushed forward before putting the ball across for Luke Rawson. The powerful front man held off his defender before deftly lifting his shot over former Steel’s keeper Ed Hall to give an early lead to the home-side. Stocksbridge had chances to double their lead. Jack Watson was looking to get two goals in two games but his powerful effort from the edge of the box went just wide. Rawson wasn’t far off his second either, his looping
