Bradfield Christmas Tractor run route revealed
By James Fletcher
If you find yourself seeking a unique and heartwarming way to embrace the festive spirit in December, consider joining The Bradfield Tractor Run, a unique and festive event, is set to return in the fun, perhaps with a steaming hot chocolate in hand, and bask in the radiant glow of the many tractors gliding for the third consecutive year, and it's evident that it has grown expo- by. The Bradfield Tractor Run promises to be a delightful and heartwarming event, showcasing the true spirit of comnentially in popularity. In the past two years, the event has seen a sub- munity and giving during the holiday season. stantial increase in participants, going from 80 to an impressive 100 individuals eager to take part. Each participant contributes £15 to join in the merriment and decorates their tractors in their own creative and festive manner. Farmers from near and far have been flocking to be a part of this one-of-a-kind spectacle. The Bradfield Tractor Run made its debut three years ago, raising funds for the local primary school in Dungworth. Unfortunately, due to the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the event has faced various restrictions. However, since its inaugural year, it has continued to gain momentum, becoming a beloved local Christmas tradition, akin to the iconic Coca-Cola Christmas advert. Many now mark their calendars with the anticipation of this event, signifying that the holiday season has truly arrived. The tractor run is scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. on December 10th, beginning its journey on Kirk Edge Road in Worrall. From there, the parade of festively decorated tractors will make its way through Haggstones Road, Oughtibridge, Church Street, Langsett Road/Middlewood Road, and onwards, traversing Wadsley via Worrell Road, Wadsley Lane, Far Lane, and Ben Lane as the convoy heads into Stannington before its final stop at the Plough public house in Low Bradfield. One of the organisers, overwhelmed with excitement, expressed, "It's a great spectacle for a fabulous cause, so it would be good to see people turn out once again to watch." This year, all the money raised from the event will be dedicated to supporting two worthy causes: the Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity and the ElysArmy, in honour of a local boy. To add an extra layer of excitement, there will be a prize awarded to the best-decorated tractor.

...Major new exhibition A major new exhibition has opened at National Coal Mining Museum for England, celebrating the work and career of Martyn Pitt who documented the final years of coal mining in his role as the industry’s photographer. Retiring in 2012 after over 30 years behind the lens, Pitt’s expansive portfolio chronicles the development and decline of the industry. The exhibition focusses primarily on his underground photography, giving visitors a peek into the hidden world hundreds of metres below our feet. As the national photographer for the coal industry, the exhibition examines Pitt’s role and responsibilities in documenting the conditions, practices, and stories of the last years of coal mining. The Museum acquired Pitt’s image archive in 2014 which spans the period of privatisation between 1994-2012 and includes film negatives and digital photographs, taken whilst working for British Coal, RJB Mining and UK Coal. His work was used to illustrate mining reviews, safety posters, newspapers and much more. These images equate to the sole visual record of mining during that period.

Participants are required to make a pledge to raise a minimum of £150 in sponsorship, raising as much money as possible to support isolated and vulnerable people across Sheffield. SCCCC is a charitable organisation that helps elderly and vulnerable people throughout Sheffield and Doncaster. They provide services from cleaning to driving people to hospital or doctor’s appointments. This charity relies mostly on donations and fundraising events such as this. Claire Biltcliffe, Centre Manager at Fox Valley, said: “We are working closely with our charity partner this year to host several great activities and events for all shoppers to get involved in. “This month we will see the return of the charity fire walk hosted by SCCCC. The Stocksbridge Towns Fund Board and Yorkshire Water are working together on the Tracks and Activities Project and wanted to hear residents’ views on a range of proposals aimed at benefitting the local community as well as visitors to the area. The drop in consultation session was held at Smithy Moor Community Centre on Thursday October 19th with at least 250 people attending throughout the four hour session. Board members and representatives from Yorkshire Water were on hand to talk through the proposals which include: ·
A linked up circular walk with a new footbridge

NHS needs blood donors O negative and B negative blood donors in Sheffield are being asked to help the NHS prepare for the challenging winter period by booking and sticking to their upcoming appointments to help build stocks. While overall blood stocks remain above the target of six days, O negative and B negative stocks have come under pressure and donors with those types are being asked to help the NHS build stocks. Existing O and B negative donors who are fit and healthy should call 0300 123 23 23 for a priority appointment, and to book in their next appointment as well. Your Letters Valuing The Urban Forest In 2012, out of frustration with the low quality of too much recent development and of irrational decision-making, Nicholas Boys-Smith founded a consultancy named ‘Create Streets’. It exists to: research links between urban form and wellbeing, health, sustainability, prosperity, value and popularity;advise communities, landowners, councils and developers;lobby for necessary policy change; help communities and long-term investors develop exemplar schemes and better manage the streets and public spaces they already have. Mr Boys-Smith is currently Chairman of the Office for Place in Gove’s Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), which exists to help to ‘create beautiful, successful and enduring places that foster a sense of community, local pride and belonging’. Last month, Create Streets published a report: ‘Greening Up’; its subtitle: ‘From fights to rights: making it the default to re-green our streets and squares’. In the report, Sheffield’s £2.2bn ‘Streets Ahead’ highway maintenance project features as a case study of malpractice, under the heading: ‘Degreening’, with the sub-heading: ‘What goes wrong when you see trees as a liability not an asset’. Extracts: “The contract between Sheffield City Council and the contractors was highly prescriptive. It focused purely on highways maintenance. It did not take account of wider issues of air quality, public health and wellbeing. It stipulated requirements, such as the width of pavement and straightness of the kerb, that were incompatible with the existence of mature street trees. Nor did it encourage the contractor to look for alternative solutions to tree felling.
wide tree campaign), the first CAVAT & i-Tree valuations of street trees in Sheffield were done in early 2016 (Feb & July, respectively). It was evident that such were necessary for cost:benefit analyses and balanced risk assessments, to aid decisions about whether to fell or retain any mature street tree.

I’M A NURSE – I WISH I’D SPOTTED MY LEUKAEMIA SYMPTOMS SOONER I cried and hugged him tight as I delivered the devastating news. And then, with a snap of the fingers, we went into organisation mode so I could get to the hospital as soon as possible. On admittance, I had a bone marrow biopsy that led to the official diagnosis of PCL a few weeks later. It took a while to finally start my treatment; a few bank holidays meant there was some difficulty getting a chemotherapy regime in order. Once we began, it felt impossible to get a good rest; the constant hustle and bustle of being on a ward combined with the steroids meant sleep was next to none. I began to lose my hair on my second round of chemotherapy; I hated the thought of it falling out bit by bit so I asked my husband to bring clippers in. Ben braved the first cut, right through the middle. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I think it was the hardest thing Ben has had to do, too. Shaving my head was me taking back the power, but it did also feel incredibly overwhelming. I did go on to get lots of compliments for my bald head, and I rocked it most of the time as turbans and wigs were just too uncomfortable! Throughout my treatment, I spent a lot of time alone. Ben had a month off work when I was first diagnosed, but he then had to go back to keep earning. We agreed that keeping as much normality as possible for our son was the priority. My family lives all over the country so we weren’t able to visit very often, but my in-laws were our lifeline - they also did the best laundry and ironing service! I had two stem cell transplants; my donor was a young German man, who I am incredibly thankful for. I experienced mild graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), amongst other random side effects, but the cells engrafted well and I achieved full remission for one and a half years. I experienced two relapses, but am now on maintenance treatment and thankfully in remission. I am grateful for all the support I have had around me, and I’m now working towards having this current chemotherapy stabilised. If I had known the signs and symptoms of leukaemia sooner, I may have seen them for what they were rather than passing them as day to day struggles. This September, Leukaemia Care are raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of leukaemia. Make sure you know what to look out for by visiting www.leukaemiacare.org.uk
When 30-year-old ITU nurse Elena Gratton, from Sheffield, started feeling tired and experiencing infections and joint pain, she put it down to her long working hours and her busy life as the mum of a toddler…. But it turned out she had a rare form of leukaemia.. Plasma cell leukaemia (PCL) is a rare and aggressive variant of multiple myeloma. It is estimated that one in a million, or fewer, will be diagnosed with PCL in a year. I happened to be one of those people. Elena tells her story… Over the span of a couple of months, I began to feel like things were going wrong. I had various infections and joint pains - one week it would be my shoulder, the next it would be my hip. I started to make excuses for my symptoms; as a night shift worker as an ITU nurse who then came home to an energetic two-year-old, it made sense as to why I was feeling so exhausted or why random bruising began to appear. The Saturday before my diagnosis, my husband Ben, my son and I went for a walk at our local lake. I remember focusing on putting one step in front of the other, just to get me to the end of the walk. Every park bench looked so appealing as if they were almost calling my name. Why was I feeling like this? A 30-year-old should not be needing a rest that is twice as long as the walk. It became clear that something was wrong, so I booked a GP appointment. I had my bloods taken, and on that same day, just as I had arrived home from picking up my son, I was told I had leukaemia and the local hospital were expecting me. I parked up on my driveway and sat still; paralysed by shock. My husband arrived home and saw me still sitting in the car. I told him to pick up our son and I would tell him the news inside. I had no intention of telling him outside, with what felt like an audience of passing pedestrians.

Victims of the storm
Last weekend’s storm and torrential rain lead to a waterlogged pitch for Leeds Modernians, forcing them to call off their Counties 4 Yorkshire league Round 6 clash with Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby.
Teammate Majka Kunicka had a good run to finish 11th overall and 3rd in the ladies over35 age category. Kai Sunman had a strong run to place fourth in the men’s race. Heidi Morley claimed ninth place in the girls under11 race in a time of 7-29. Alex Wright placed seventh in the boys under13 race in 16-28.
The teams entered were men’s open, ladies over40 and men’s over50. Standards were very high at the event with some of the best fell runners in Britain assembled. Hugh Mackie had a great run on leg one to put the men’s open team in 17th place in a time of 30-18.

Penistone had strong representation at the first fixture in the South Yorkshire Cross Country league at Clifton Park in Rotherham. Standout performance came from Ruby Sykes who claimed second place in the senior ladies race.
Penistone footpath runners entered three teams in the British Fell Relay Championships at Braithwaite near Keswick in the Lake District. Despite the adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Babet the Lake District surprisingly enjoyed good conditions for the event.

Valley Hill Runners participated in the inaugural cross country run of the season at Clifton Park on Sunday. It was an ideal day for running, with the sun shining as the runners embarked on their journey around the park. The members of the team who took part in the event were Jess Lishman, Harriet Kirk, Jayne Grayson, Steve Sansom, Ash Molloy, Jonny, and Briggs.
The men’s over50 team was made up of Ian Charlesworth, Robin Clough, Chris Hodgson, Steve Sanders, Andy Shelbourne and Steve Storey. Dawn Broom bounced back from a disappointing Yorkshire Marathon to claim first lady in the over55 category at the Abingdon Marathon. Despite falling down at 21 miles Dawn managed to complete the course in an impressive 3-31-43. Many parkruns were cancelled around the region due to Storm Babet. Flynn Rogers was first at the Hillsborough junior parkrun and Lauren Lees claimed second girl at the same event. Lee Hopkins notched up his 450th parkrun at Lytham Hall. Steels weather the storm
Church taste sweet victory
0-2
Stocksbridge Park Steels got back to winning ways in the league after a 2-0 win over Carlton Town. There won’t be too many words written about the first half as there wasn’t too much action in it to justify the words. The Carlton officials had done a great job to get the game on considering the effect Storm Babet had on the area, but the pitch was a factor in both teams taking their time to feel things out. This meant there were limited chances in the first half with both teams struggling with their final ball. Carlton were the closest to either team scoring as Matthew Ford’s free kick was curled around the wall well but Ben Townsend made a great save to touch it onto the post. The rebound was then blared over. In the second half, both teams were much improved and showed more in attack than they had in the first half. One big chance for Stocksbridge was when Ross Goodwin showed great physicality to avoid losing the ball to his defender, bulldozing his way through into the box. All it lacked was a finish as he would hit it well over. The clock was ticking and it was starting to become increasingly likely that it was going to end goalless. However it wasn’t to be. Ben Townsend took a free kick and got it right into the box. Carlton’s keeper Felix Annan
3-1
missed his punch and a touch from a Carlton defender knocked it to Elliot Murray. The defender then showed the sort of poise in front of goal you don’t see from his position, taking a touch before hitting a well taken finish to give Stocksbridge the lead.
Attendance – 307
Church who were still struggling with suspensions and injuries called on the reserves, the under twenty-ones, an emergency loan and assistant manager Brett Lovell who came out of retirement in producing a team to play against Tadcaster Albion on Saturday.
Carlton did start to push to get an equaliser but the next and most important goal would be for the away side. It was good passing from Stocksbridge around the pass as they looked to unlock a Carlton defence which were rushing to get the ball back, and Ollie Nowak’s pass found Kurtis Turner who slammed a powerful shot home to make it 2-0.
Assistant manager and veteran player Brett Lovell had this to say First of all today credit to the groundsman, Carl Roberts and the volunteers. It’s unbelievable the deluge that we’ve had in the last twenty-four hours and I just want to thank them for preparing the pitch which played absolutely perfectly.
The Millers’ evening would get worse. Stocksbridge were trying to get even more goals and it looked likely when leading scorer Luke Rawson burst through onto a good pass. He was having a tussle with Shea ThompsonHarris has he was going through but the defender ended up just wrestling him to the ground before Rawson could get into the box. As he was the last man, Thompson-Harris was given his marching orders. Turner could only hit the free kick against the wall but it didn’t matter as Stocksbridge had already got three points.
