MAN ADMITS MURDER
A man has admitted murdering a woman reported missing in the days before her body was discovered in Sheffield.
Mark Nicholls, 43, pleaded guilty to killing Emily Sanderson, whose body was found in Crofton Avenue, Hillsborough.
Ms Sanderson, who had not been seen since 19 May, was reported missing on 25 May. Her body was found on 30 May.
Nicholls, also of Crofton Avenue, is due to be sentenced on 6 October at Sheffield Crown Court.
A post-mortem examination found that Ms Sanderson died from head injuries.

All Wilko stores to close
The Wilko name will disappear from UK High Streets as a rescue deal for the chain fell through.
All of its 400 stores across the UK will close by early October, the GMB union has said.
It means redundancies now look likely for all 12,500 staff at the familyowned business.
It is understood no bidders are interested in running shops under the
Wilko name, although some parties are interested in rebranding their stores.
The billionaire owner of HMV, Doug Putman, hoped to keep up to 300 Wilko shops open, but his bid failed as rising costs complicated the deal. Administrators are expected to announce the details of further redundancies and store closures soon.

'TRAMLINES WILL REMAIN AT HILSBOROUGH PARK' Cllr says
Events bring millions to Sheffield’s economy, generate community pride and support the wellbeing of residents, according to a new report from Sheffield City Council that looks at the impact of events on the city, including Tramlines.
It’s estimated that Tramlines brings a £3.8 million boost to Sheffield’s economy annually. As well as the festival at Hillsborough Park, which was attended by more than 40,000 people, more than 40 city centre venues took part in The Fringe at Tramlines in 2023. With thousands of people enjoying a free family-friendly event on Devonshire Green during the Fringe.
During September, the council’s Economic Development and Skills and Communities, Parks and Leisure Committees, will be discussing Tramlines festival, the benefits it brings to the city, the recovery of Hillsborough Park after this
year’s wet weather and plans for future festivals.
Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee, said: “Tramlines will remain at Hillsborough Park because it is the best venue for the festival in the city. The fee the festival pays to the council will continue to support maintenance and improvements to the park for the benefit of all users. Festival organisers are always responsible for the cost of works required to reinstate the park after the festival.”
Do you agree with Sheffield City Council’s stance?
Is a Park a commercial asset to the Council or a financial liability for the Council to provide the public a green space, can we balance the two?

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR KEEPS STORE ALIVE AND KICKING
Advertising Feature Sheffield Discount Furniture, a beloved local business that has been a fixture in the community for over two decades, has been given a new lease on life, thanks to the determination and business acumen of a young entrepreneur.
The store, formerly known as SWAG/Furniture Discount Furniture, was on the brink of closing its doors for good. However, it has been saved from extinction by 25-yearold Chris Scott, who has taken over as the new owner. Chris's bold move comes after he spotted the imminent closure of the business and decided to step in and rescue it.
"I never intended to have my own business at such a young age," Chris admitted during an interview with Look Local. "I'd spent 8 years working within the family furniture business in Nuneaton. I saw that SWAG was genuinely going to close down, so I made inquiries about keeping the business going, and a few weeks later, here I am at the start of September as the new business owner."
With enthusiasm and a deep commitment to preserving the business, Chris is determined
to revitalise Sheffield Discount Furniture. The store is currently in the midst of a comprehensive restocking effort, and customers can already see a wide range of new furniture gracing the shop floor.
"I'm so happy to have taken over and to be able to keep our little part of Sheffield alive," Chris expressed, reflecting the community's sentiment towards the store.
Sheffield Discount Furniture, now under Chris's ownership, is located in the Darnall area and boasts a vast warehouse filled to the brim with goodquality furniture offered at remarkably good value prices, some 30% below what customers would expect to pay elsewhere.
The store has always been known for its commitment to customer satisfaction, and this tradition will continue under Chris's leadership. Sheffield Discount Furniture prides itself on providing:
GooD Quality: Their furniture is known for its durability and craftsmanship.
GooD Value: Offering prices that are substantially lower than competitors.
FaSt-Free DeliVery: Ensuring a hassle-free shopping experience.
takinG olD itemS away: A service that helps customers seamlessly upgrade their furniture.
excellent cuStomer SerVice: A commitment to providing exceptional support.
With Chris's passion and dedication, Sheffield Discount Furniture is poised to continue serving the community for many years to come, offering good-quality furniture and unbeatable value. The store's revival is a testament to the importance of local businesses and the potential for young entrepreneurs to make a significant impact on their communities.

TUESDAY
On the scorching a ernoon of Saturday, September 9th, Stannington Story Festival 2023 unfolded its magical realm, encapsulating the hearts and minds of all who attended.
Nestled in the charming hillside ‘village’, this exceptional event drew both local talents from She eld and enthusiastic participants from far and wide.
As the summer sun beat down relentlessly, storytellers and performers gathered, eagerly awaiting the moment they could transport the audience into a world where giants, monsters, and other terrifying entities lurk.
e anticipation was palpable as the festival grounds buzzed with activity. Among the esteemed storytellers, there were familiar faces from She eld, their reputation preceding them, while one determined soul had journeyed all the way from Maccles eld to grace this captivating occasion.
Additionally, one talented individual had made a remarkable journey from Norway, currently calling She eld her home. eir diverse backgrounds and perspectives promised to o er a rich tapestry of tales, enhancing the allure of this already memorable experience. e audience, captivated by imagination and a craving for spine-tingling narratives, lled the venue eager to embark on a journey through an enigmatic labyrinth of stories.
e theme of the day, aptly titled "Giants, Monsters, and Other Scary ings," resonated deeply within each person's spirit, ensuring that their expectations were both lo y and keenly anticipatory.
As the program commenced, vibrant and electrifying performances unfolded before a rapt audience. Each story woven by these gi ed individuals transported the listeners to realms where unimaginable creatures roamed, where fear and exhilaration intertwined, and where the boundaries between reality and fantasy shi ed with every word spoken. From mighty giants with erce temperaments to ba ing monsters lurking within the darkest corners of the imagination, no tale fell short of delivering shivers down spines and provoking the pulse to quicken.
e variety of narratives, skillfully interwoven with masterful storytelling techniques, ensured that every listener was carried away into these otherworldly worlds. e collective sighs of satisfaction echoed through the venue, a testament to the power of language and the mesmerising ability of storytellers to captivate and enchant. In conclusion, Stannington Story Festival 2023 will long be etched in the memories of all who attended. It was a celebration of the art of storytelling, where giants, monsters, and other terrifying entities materialised before the eyes of eager listeners.

My tropical garden.
I always enjoyed my garden, and grew it full of tropical plants. With palms eight foot tall, and that wasnt all. My bananas took up some space. Canna lilys, with vibrant colours, Gave it some grace.
Fairy lights came on at night, What a sight. It was a haven of tranquility. en came the sadness one very cold summer night.
I woke up with a fright, my bananas like dead bodies lay on the ground. It was a terrible sight. ey had survived cold winters, wrapped in some eace. en one freak summer night they didn’t exist.
I still love my garden, but life takes its tole. Its hard on your body, but good for your Soul.

Operation Park Safe
LABOUR COUNCILLORS SUSPENDED
Seven She eld Labour councillors, including former leader Terry Fox, have been suspended by the national party, writes Lucy Ashton for BBC News.
e BBC understands their suspensions were related to their refusal to vote with Labour at a meeting last week discussing the city's Local Plan.
Operation Park Safe is an initiative designed to reduce dangerous and anti-social parking by allowing members of the public to submit photos and videos of inconsiderate parking directly to the Police. e Labour Party declined to comment, but its National Executive said the suspensions were open-ended while investigations were carried out.
All the suspended councillors have been contacted by the BBC for a response.
As well as Mr Fox, the suspended councillors include his wife Denise Fox and fellow Labour councillors Bryan Lodge, Julie Grocutt, Tony Damms, Garry Weatherall and Dianne Hurst.
It is understood that they will remain as Labour Party members and will not sit as independents.
ey will be expected to vote with Labour at council meetings, but they have been barred from attending party meetings.
A senior Labour party source told the BBC: "She eld is on the up and Labour is focused on delivering for local people.
"Any action by councillors who are not on board will not be tolerated."
She eld Labour was placed in special measures by the national party earlier this year.
Councillor Fox quit as leader of the council on the morning of the local election count in May, a er having been in the post since 2021.
SCHOOL AND COUNCIL WORKERS VOTE ON STRIKE ACTION
Strike vote could see walkouts at 150 schools and local authorities across Yorkshire, warns GMB Union
9060 school and council workers will begin voting on strike action today [Tuesday 12 September].
Ballots will take place at 150 schools and local authorities across the region.
School workers such as teaching assistants, lunchtime supervisors, caretakers, administrative sta and council workers including social workers, refuse collectors, grounds sta and care workers will take part in the ballot which closes on 24 October.
Workers have rejected the NJC’s pay o er for 2023/24 on a consultative ballot.
If workers vote to strike, walkouts at schools and councils across England and Wales could begin as soon as 9 November.
Sharon Wilde, GMB National O cer, said: “School sta , refuse collectors and council and town hall workers are the hidden glue that keeps our society together.
“ ey help our children learn, they look a er our most vulnerable residents, they clean our streets, and they keep us all safe.
“ ey deserve proper value for the work they do.
“A er more than a decade of Conservative cuts and a crushing cost of living crisis, it’s time they were given the proper pay rise they need.”

Players looking forward to Christmas
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…especially for members of Grenoside and Birley Carr Players!
For even though most of the country is still in summer holiday mode, the popular community theatre company are well into rehearsals for their forthcoming production of Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, which comes to Grenoside Community Centre this October. In the celebrated tale of ghostly encounters and Festive redemption, Mark Winton plays cold hearted Victorian businessman Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who doesn’t just dislike Christmas…he hates it!
But on one very special Christmas Eve, the seventh anniversary of the death of his equally mean-spirited partner Jacob Marley, three spectral visitors take Ebenezer on a journey through his past, present and future and teach him to embrace once more the season of goodwill.
Charles Dickens’ timeless fantasy comes to fresh life in a new adaptation by Michael Marrone which takes to the stage at Grenoside Community Centre from October 18 to 20 at 7.30pm, with a Saturday matinee on October 21 at 2.30pm.

Graihagh helps England to Silver
‘Heat Wave on the Course’
Wednesday, we saw the Dragons section compete in the September Medal, with Les Wright taking the honours in Div.1 with a net score of 65 and David Broadhurst in with net 68.
Mid-week Pro’s prizes saw Steve Coutts win with 39pts.
The Junior Home Internationals mountain race took place on Sunday in Peebles, Scotland. The race was hosted by Scottish Athletics and featured teams from England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland.
The course started and finished at the Peebles Common and took in a variety of terrain, including forest trails, open moorland, and steep climbs. Penistone athlete Graihagh Turner representing England in the girls under17 age category placed fifth overall and was second home for England helping them take the silver team medal.
The final Trunce took place last Monday in warm conditions. As it was the final race, fancy dress was encouraged. Penistone claimed a one two with Tom Fryers claiming first place ahead of teammate George Parr. There were age group wins for Richard Cottan (men’s over40), Majka Kunicka (ladies over40) and Barabara Haigh (ladies over70).
Series winners will be announced at the Trunce presentation night on 18th September.
A few Penistone runners took on the Bleaklow Blitz, which is an eight mile fell race that takes place near Torside and follows the Pennine Way all the way up to Bleaklow Head and then back down.
Penistone were well represented in the first ten finishers with Damien Kilpin picking up fifth and George Parr not far behind in seventh. This strong packing gave Penistone first place in the men’s team prize. First lady
back for Penistone was Sarah Walch, who was fourth lady back, followed by Becky Timms, who was seventh lady.
A strong contingent of Penistone runners took part in the Vale of York half marathon. Stand out performance was from Bill Phillips who picked up first place in the men’s over75 age category and in the process broke the men’s over75 club record in a time of 1-51-25.
First runner back for Penistone was Tom Fryers in 1-21-31 followed in by his brother James in 1-24-26. First lady back for Penistone was Sarah Lee in 1-58-16. Ray Brown picked up third place on the men’s over75 age category in 2-20-57.
The Great North Run saw four runners from Penistone complete the race in difficult conditions including flash flooding at the end.
First Penistone finisher was Rob Lees in 1-34-25. Others finishing were Gareth Irvine (1-42-34), Oliver France (1-54-28) and Mandy Helliwell (2-34-25).
On the Parkrun scene a good few Penistone runners were celebrating milestones. At the Barnsley parkrun there were milestones for Myfanwy Cross (200th parkrun), Matt Coldwell (250th parkrun), Stu Smith (300th parkrun) and Keith Gordon (350th parkrun). John Lawcock completed his 150th parkrun at Potternewton. There were firsts for Rachael Mayston (Barnsley), Julia Johnson (Haverfordwest) and Flynn Rogers (Hillsborough).
Stocksbridge crash to home defeat
A surprise home defeat for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby at the weekend as York RI inflicted a ‘smash n grab’ 19pts to 12pts victory to leave Stocksbridge winless after 2 rounds of the Yorkshire 4 Counties league competition.
All is not lost for the Stocksbridge outfit as tries just before half time from hard working back rower Pete Newton, and another from promising youngster Harrison Norman, near the end of the 2nd stanza kept the home team in the hunt.
That man Adam Frith, was on hand with a successful conversion, & Stocksbridge would have probably won with a few more minutes on the clock, but a disastrous start, left the home side with just too much to do. They now sit 10th in the league ladder with just a solitary bonus point to show for their efforts, & a tricky away trip to Leeds, to much fancied Otliensians at the weekend, before entertaining Richmondshire RUFC at Coal Pit Lane on 23 Sep with a 3pm kick off. This week’s Premier Stone Worktops Ltd was Pete Newton, who stood out in the back row in a pretty good overall team effort.
On Friday the Club hosted the Stocksbridge Parks Steels for their Annual Golf Day. A fantastic day for both Clubs in the area with many golfers taking part from far and wide… and some non-golfers to be fair.
Well down to Valley Hill male captain Christopher Grayson who after substaining a running injury instead of running park run decided to help more instead
This week he celebrated 100 helping credits at the concord park run. No volunteers no park run.

Tigers Take slender lead
SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead admits he’d have liked a bigger lead to take to Ipswich on Thursday (September 14, 7.30) - but feels his side are still more than capable of winning the Premiership Knockout Cup.
The Tru Plant Tigers fought their way to a 48-42 victory in their home leg on Monday, with a midmeeting run of five consecutive heat advantages proving pivotal.
“I would’ve liked more, but we haven’t got more,” Stead said.
“We got caught a little bit early on but we did respond to thatit would’ve just been nice to have finished a little bit stronger.”
It was a frustrating night for guest No.1 Max Fricke, who scored just 2+1, but Stead is expecting much more from the Leicester captain in Thursday’s decider at Foxhall.
“Max is disappointed with his night,” Stead said.
“But he gets his chance to turn it around and put some points on the board for us.
“So if he can turn it around and the rest of the boys can keep doing what they’ve been doing then we’re going to be a handful.”

Assistant manager Brett Lovell
The lads have put a real shift in this afternoon in despite the tremendous heat, it’s probably the hottest conditions we’ve had at a game this year.
I thought we played reasonably well first half, we were good in possession, we created our chances but they were just really clinical with theirs when they came along. This ultimately meant we went in at half time three-nil down.
I didn’t know then and I don’t know now why the ref gave the penalty against us, I spoke to him at length during half time and he thinks the balls travelled sixty yards and Tom Charlesworth’s arm is out wide.
We always felt that if we got an early second half goal the nerves would start going for them and that’s what happened
The third goal is really fortunate, the determination of Kieran Ryan to make a challenge on the edge of the box caused a ricochet over the keeper to make it three-all. We were really dominant in the second half and had several more chances, but again Albion have come back to hurt us with their clinical attitude.
It certainly wasn’t a bad performance for our lads, we’ve done a lot of stuff right but Albion were clinical when the chances have come along, we could have stopped some of them and that’s a little bit disappointing. We don’t have the time to be upset or down about it we have a big game again on Wednesday at Handsworth on their astro-turf, a pitch that they’ll be used to and we won’t. It’s going to be a period of seventy-two hours where we’ll be monitoring the lads making sure bodies are right for another chance to get three points on the board. So we rest, we recover, take the positives from today and we move on to Handsworth on Wednesday. Thanks to everyone for their support

Rawson springs double for Steels
Stocksbridge Park Steels ended their FA Trophy drought by beating Newton Aycliffe 3-1, for their first win in the competition since 2017.
Newton Aycliffe had the better start to the game but it took over
20 minutes before they head a real effort on goal with Jake Petitjean forcing an impressive save from Ben Townsend. After the drinks break though, Stocksbridge were able to improve and had a great chance thanks to a good cross
from Jack Tinker but Ross Goodwin could only put it over from six yards. Stocksbridge would get their goal though. Tomas Poole swung in a corner and the initial effort was well saved by Daniel Cameron in the Newton Aycliffe goal. However, Jack Watson was waiting to pounce and he stabbed home the rebound to give the Steels the lead. Stocksbridge would press to double their lead before the break but it would remain 1-0.
The Steels would continue in the second half in the same way they started the first, by being on top and making chances. They had a big opportunity as Poole was slipped in and went clear on goal. He’d beat the goalkeeper but not the post, which allowed Cameron to get the ball into his arms.
Stocksbridge would be punished for not taking their chances. Newton Aycliffe needed a few bites at the cherry as the initial header was saved at point blank range from Ben Townsend before another deflected shot fell to Mckenzie Diccicio who was able to hit home from close range.
Thankfully, Stocksbridge didn’t allow this to get them down and they were back ahead a few minutes later. It was another corner kick and Poole’s delivery was brilliant, with Luke Rawson just needing to be in the right place to head in his 6th of the season.
And it continued to be all Stocksbridge as they some how didn’t extend their lead. Kurtis Turner was played in and after initially losing the chance, good footwork created the space for himself to have another shot. It took a deflection and went past the goalkeeper but it didn’t have the power to cross the line and it was cleared before getting to the line. Ify Ofoegbu had done all the hard work to beat several defenders before bursting into the box but could only hit wide of his near post.
But Stocksbridge would go on to wrap up the win. Newton Aycliffe were throwing more men forward, even converting central defender Mark Costello into a striker, but this would leave them vulnerable at the back. And so it would be as the Steels broke on them, allowing Rawson to move into the box, beat his man before finishing it to send Stocksbridge
into the next round of the FA Trophy.
Manager Ian Richards said “The lads were excellent, we had 14 attempts on target and our journey home and the rest of the weekend will be all the better thanks to the win.”
Next home game: Saturday 16 Sep, 3pm KO vs BRIGHOUSE TOWN.
