General Election: Candidates Announced for North Sheffield
MG 3 Hybrid+ Review:
The General Election has been scheduled for the 4th of July, and the candidates for North Sheffield have now been announced.
In the Penistone and Stocksbridge constituency, the contest is expected to be a fierce two-way battle between The Labour Party and The Conservatives.
Look Local was lucky enough to be given the opportunity from Eric Stead in Eccles eld to test drive the brand new MG3 Hybrid+.
Back in 2019, Miriam Cates stunned Labour by securing nearly 50% of the vote, snatching the seat for The Conservatives. This unexpected victory left Labour reeling from the loss of a seat in what they considered their stronghold.
First Impressions
e MG 3 Hybrid+ is a striking and aesthetically pleasing car. Its sleek design immediately catches the eye, and the spacious boot and well-appointed cockpit, featuring two screens, add to its allure. Even during a school pick-up, the car garnered admiration, with comments, "Nice car."

Reflecting on her term, Cates said, “Over the last four and a half years, it has been a privilege to represent the people of Penistone and Stocksbridge in Parliament, to make your voice heard on a whole range of issues, whether that’s supporting the steel industry, campaigning to keep our children safe, protecting single-sex spaces, calling for action to lower immigration, or lobbying the Government for better transport, better jobs, and more investment.”

Dance Team Triumphs in Croatia, Bringing Home Gold
A local dance team has returned from Croatia in triumph, having secured multiple medals in an international competition. Competing against 11 countries, the team achieved remarkable results:
3 Gold Medals
3 Silver Medals
2 Bronze Medals
The highlight of the competition was their 10-minute team production of "Ham-
ilton," which earned them the prestigious title of World Dance Champions, securing 1st place.
Dance teacher Nicole Burgin expressed her delight: “It’s been such a fantastic experience for all the dancers, and to come away with so many medals – including three golds – is just an amazing achievement.”
School principal, Lauren McCaslin, also praised the team's efforts: “It has been a fantastic experience for all the pupils to represent England in the IDF World
Championships. The kids have worked so hard to get ready for the competition and they have done incredibly well – we’re so proud of them all.”
The journey to Croatia was made possible thanks to the support of local businesses, including Sandersons Department Store, which helped cover the £1,000 cost for each young dancer to participate. Their generosity turned the dream of competing on the world stage into a reality.

Fox Glen Park Renovation Celebrated by Community
Friends of Fox Glen Park were elated to receive a Citizenship Award from Stocksbridge Town Council, accompanied by a £100 grant towards their ambitious renovation project.
The transformation journey began in the summer of 2022 when a concerned local parent reached out to Councillor Mark Whittaker about the deteriorating state of Fox Glen Park on Wood Royd Road in Deepcar. The parent highlighted that the park had become a neglected and unsafe place for children to play, with several pieces of equipment removed due to safety concerns.
Responding to this call for action, a public meeting was convened, leading to the formation of the Friends of Fox Glen Park (FOFGP). This group, led by local parents with the support of local councillors and Sheffield City Council's Parks Department, embarked on a mission to revitalise the park.
Over the past two years, FOFGP has worked tirelessly to transform the once underutilised play area
into a bustling, vibrant playground enjoyed by both children and parents. The group successfully raised approximately £60,000 to purchase specialist play equipment, with additional items scheduled for installation this summer.
The renovation project saw significant input from the community, including pupils from St. John’s Deepcar Junior School. Teachers collaborated with students to select the type of equipment they wanted, ensuring the park would cater to children of all ages. The involvement of the pupils was instrumental in securing a £20,000 boost from Stocksbridge Town Council’s Participatory Awards, which kickstarted the fundraising efforts.
Katie Ryan, Chair of FOFGP, expressed her gratitude, saying, “We are so grateful to the school for supporting us, to all who have awarded us grants, and to the Parks Department for their invaluable advice, design, and installation support.”
The project received funding from a diverse array of sources, includ-
ing Stocksbridge Town Council, Sheffield City Council Parks Department, The National Lottery Fund, Sheffield Town Trust, J.G. Graves Charitable Trust, SCC Local Area Committee, The Bridge Community Shop, and Stocksbridge and Deepcar Tenants Association.
Parents now relish bringing their children to the rejuvenated park, enjoying the opportunity to socialise while their children play and make new friends. “It’s a great place to come now,” said Freya, aged 8, who enthusiastically added, “Thank you!”

Celebrating the dedication of St Luke’s Hospice volunteers
What do the St Luke’s volunteers give to Sheffield’s hospice? A remarkable 92,000 hours of time and dedication in the last year alone! And it was that dedication that was celebrated as more than 60 of those volunteers gathered together for a special ceremony to mark their achievements.
The St Luke’s Volunteer Long Service Awards – held at the OEC in Hillsborough and sponsored by Henderson’s Relish – were given to volunteers in recognition of milestones ranging from five to 40 years with the hospice.
And for the five longest serving volunteers who were able to attend the ceremony, that meant a total of 130 years of support for St Luke’s.
“Our month of Big Help Out events has just come to an end, encourag-
ing more people than ever to support us in many different ways, so this was the perfect opportunity for us to thank those volunteers who already give so much of their time and enthusiasm,” said St Luke’s Volunteer Development Manager Francesca Bradshaw.
“The fact that we now have more than 800 people of all ages giving their time to St Luke’s is truly remarkable and we hope that many more of them will be receiving Long Service awards in the years to come.
“This was a great evening and we must give special thanks to event sponsors Henderson’s Relish for adding their special Henderson’s flavour to the pie and peas before the awards presentation ceremony got under way.”
A sense of community spirit as Bandstand gets a makeover
South Yorkshire Police, in partnership with William Birch, were joined by Ecclesfield Parish Council to give the local bandstand a much-needed makeover.
Officers from Ecclesfield Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) recognised an opportunity to give back to the local community and create a space for everyone to enjoy. This project has been made possible by the social value contribution within the police contract with William Birch, who is leading the current refurbishment project at Ecclesfield Police Station.
Currently, several social value projects are managed through the force’s Sustainability Team, which is a small team consisting of three members of police staff who are dedicated to ensuring South Yorkshire Police deliver their sustainability commitments. This team works to embed sustainability throughout all areas of force activity, to ensure that SYP actively reduces negative environmental impacts and enhances positive social contributions wherever possible.
The whole park saw the effects of the spring clean, with the force's sustainability team, Ecclesfield Parish Council, Veolia, and Sheffield Parks and Countryside completing a day of action at the beginning of May, picking up litter, repainting the goal posts, clearing weeds and planting wildflowers.
Assistant Chief Constable Lindsey Butterfield had the honour of leading the grand opening last week (Thursday 6 June) ahead of the D-Day 80 event and declaring the bandstand open to the public. Residents saw the restored bandstand in all its glory, with the stand being used for a range of musical performances as part of the evening’s celebrations.
Sergeant Cook commented:
“It was important to me to have a project that was local to the station, as we are here to serve our communities and I want to be able to show that.
“Ecclesfield Park is widely used by dog walkers, but we wanted to help the Parish Council make it a space for everyone to enjoy. There have been incidents of graffiti and littering on the bandstand, so it has been great to see it get unveiled as part of the Council’s event.”

Haywood Heroics
Shiregreen 95 all out (C Haywood 6-28)
Stocksbridge 98-4 (A Barnes 24*)
A cracking effort in the field, led to a comfortable victory for the 1st XI today! Andy Hibbert was quickly in the wickets as usual, with Shiregreen 8-2 in no time, with both openers dismissed. Callum Haywood then ripped through the Shiregreen lineup, claiming fantastic figures of 6-28 from 9.1 overs. Chris Lowe also bowled well and picked up 2 wickets, as the hosts couldn't quite reach the 100 mark.
In reply, Stocksbridge saw the victory home with relative comfort, with multiple batsmen contributing. Ant Barnes top scored with 24 not out, with Matt Price, Jack Murfin and Andy Hirst all scoring 15 or more. A comprehensive win, which means back-to-back victories in the league for the 1sts.
Sheffield Collegiate 3rd XI 252-7 (C Thwaites 3-51, J Vickers 2-46)
Stocksbridge 71 all out (S Perry 21)
The 1st XI were also in cup action this weekend, with a difficult tie in the last 16 of the President's Trophy. Unfortunately, it was a resounding defeat against a very good Sheffield Collegiate side. The hosts batted first and posted a very challenging total of 252. Youngster Tom
Sheila Duffy and Julian Saunders from Valley Hill decided to have a little trip abroad to celebrate Julian's birthday but also to get a park run completed in Gdansk in Poland. Sheila said it was a lovely park run with fantastic volunteers but as she said that's the beauty of park run everyone is there for everyone so you have a great morning.
Perry took the first wicket of the day on his 1st XI debut, thanks to a stumping from Andy Hirst. Chris Thwaites then removed the host's number 2, 3 and 4 batsmen but the score had raced to 163-4. Skipper Jake Vickers picked up 2 late stumpings, however Collegiate still posted an imposing total of 252.
The reply with the bat never really got going, with wickets falling very regularly and batsmen struggling to get it away. Steve Perry batted well for 21, with only Jack Murfin (13) and Callum Haywood (13) reaching double figures.
Well done to Sheffield Collegiate and best of luck in the quarterfinals.
Stocksbridge 2nd XI 130-9 (S Perry 33, H Hurst 30)
Green Moor 1st XI 133-6 (D Goodson 3-22)
It was a local derby for the 2nds this weekend, as they hosted neighbours Green Moor. The visitors were flying high in the league after recent relegations and it was a tough task for our 2s. Unfortunately, Stocky fell to 8-2 early on, with both openers being dismissed. Steve Perry and Harry Hurst fought back well, forging a 65-run partnership. Both Perry and Hurst looked in good touch, with Perry hitting 5 4s and a 6 and Hurst hitting 6 4s. Sadly, the middle and lower order collapsed, with the 2nds crumbling from 92-3 to 110-9. Tailender Paul Hargreaves was the 3rd top scorer with 14, hitting a lusty 6 with the last ball of
the innings! The response with the ball got off to the perfect possible start, with youngster Tom Perry clean bowling Jack Berry with the very first ball of the innings! Darren Goodson then took 2 wickets in an over and Green Moor was floundering at 7-3, with Stocksbridge in a great position. Unfortunately, a couple of good partnerships in the middle order resurrected the visitor's chances. The 2nds took the game late, with Goodson picking up a 3rd wicket and Liam Grayson picking up a wicket, however Green Moor got over the winning line with 4 overs remaining.
Fantastic Foxes
The fantastic Foxes ladies team were also in action this week vs Oughtibridge! Stocksbridge came out on top in the battle of the bridges, with Carlie Howe leading the way with bat and ball! Carlie top scored with 15 runs, Claire Parish added 10 and Fenella Hibbert & Abby Green both batted well for 7 runs.
Carlie Howe also claimed 3 wickets for just 2 runs, Abby picked up 2 wickets for 11 runs and Claire claimed 1 wicket for 13, plus 2 run outs! An amazing effort by all the ladies in action, great win!
Photo: Ian RevittJenni Fiander, a member of Valley Hill Runners, participated in and won a prize at the Kimberworth Striders Kimmy Kanter on Wednesday night. She achieved first place in the Women's Vets 65 category. Despite recently turning 70, Jenni has accumulated numerous years of running experience and age hasn't hindered her from staying active and continuing her running pursuits.

Last but not least was Charlotte Middleton who made her triathlon at the Fishguard Triathlon in Wales completing the swim, bike, run in 3:02.59 and placing 1st in her age category.
