25 YEAR OLD DIES AFTER COLLISION STEELS BACK TO WINNING WAYS

JAILED: 18 YEARS
...for Man who left the victim in pool of his own blood after brutal attack A man who brutally assaulted another man by punching him and stamping on his head before fleeing the scene and leaving him in a pool of his own blood has been jailed. Brad Spencer inflicted horrific injuries on his victim after an argument turned physical in Stocksbridge, Sheffield, on the morning of 10 January 2023. The 30-year-old initially pushed his victim onto the sofa, then pinned him against the wall by his throat before attacking him outside by stomping on his head in a prolonged and unchallenged attack. Spencer then fled the scene and tried to get staff in a nearby shop to call
him a taxi while his victim lay on the floor unconscious with a significant head wound. Spencer, of Pot House Lane, Stocksbridge, was arrested the following day and was subsequently charged with attempted murder. In May 2023, he pleaded guilty to section 18 GBH and on Monday earlier this week (20 November), Spencer was given an 18-year sentence, comprising 13 years in prison. He has also been made subject to a five-year extended licence after a judge deemed him to be a dangerous offender.
was senseless, brutal and utterly horrific. His victim is lucky to have survived and he has been left with longlasting, life-changing injuries. "We were able to arrest Spencer within hours of the attack and he is now thankfully behind bars for a very long time. His actions were not only savage but cowardly as he attempted to flee the scene of the crime with no regard or understanding of the serious injuries he had just inflicted. "I hope Spencer's sentencing can offer his victim and their family some sort of closure as they attempt to move forward with their lives."
Detective Constable Arron Connolly, investigating, said: "Spencer's attack

CITY OF RIVERS A free exhibition has opened exploring Sheffield's relationships with its rivers over the centuries, writes Kevin Shoesmith for BBC News. City of Rivers, now running at the city's Weston Park Museum, includes art, stories, poetry and photographs. More than 300 artworks and objects, including a 3D topographic map of the city, can be viewed until November 2024. Lucy Cooper, exhibitions curator at Sheffield Museums, said: "Sheffield's rivers are the heartbeat of the city." Highlights include 19th Century Sheffield artist Robert Hudson's autumnal depiction of Endcliffe Woods, which is now Endcliffe Park. Commissioned for the exhibition is a "beautifully crafted" 3D topographic map of Sheffield showing all of the city's rivers. 'Endlessly interesting' Holly Clifford, who created the map, said: "Storytelling

through art is something I'm extremely passionate about. "Aside from the enormous practicality of maps, I just think they're endlessly interesting and beautiful; you can get lost in the entrancing structure of the flowing contour lines." The exhibition has been developed with help from South Yorkshire wildlife and community groups. It also features contributions from schoolchildren. Ms Cooper said rivers impact "everything from nature and wildlife to our work and hobbies". She added: "We've had a great response from individuals and groups with contemporary content for the exhibition, including art, photos and objects, and it's been fantastic to bring these together with works from historic collections to celebrate all aspects of the city's waterways."

Community Comes Together to Aid Elderly Woman Who Lost Pension Money In a display of community spirit, Stocksbridge residents rallied together to assist 85-year-old Doreen Wilkinson after she lost over £300 in pension money. Doreen's misfortune occurred after she collected the funds from the Post Office in the Co-op in Stocksbridge. After the collection, the retired nurse and midwife carried on with her day, only to realise at the checkout that her pension money was missing. Determined to recover her loss, Doreen reached out to the local community through an appeal in Look Local, hoping for a helping hand. Despite no one coming forward with the lost money, local Sheila Stuart did read Doreen’s letter. Sheila, along with her friends Don Silburn and Barbara Horsman, and Charlotte, an employee at the Post Office, decided to join forces and raise enough money to cover Doreen's financial setback. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Doreen expressed her thanks, stating, "I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped me and my husband Bernard. In these days, it's good to see kindness and honesty, instead of greed." The story serves as a reminder that, even in challenging times, a tight-knit community is ready to step up and support its members in need.

never met, and would help in any way he could without thinking about it.
The man’s family has named him and paid tribute to their beloved son.
“He has had a wonderful life. Even though it has only been 25 short years, he has made every minute count.
On Wednesday 22 November at 7.34am, emergency services attended reports of a road traffic collision on Park Road in Worsborough involving a silver Toyota Yaris and a grey Honda motorcycle. The motorcyclist, now named as 25-year-old Aaron Smith from Hoyland was taken to hospital by ambulance with a serious head injury. He sadly died on Thursday 23 November. Aaron’s family has released a tribute to their son. They said: “AJ is our beautiful son now and forever. He made us the proudest parents in the world. “AJ was caring and thoughtful about his family, friends and even people he had
“He is truly going to be missed so, so much by everyone, but by fulfilling AJ’s last wish of being an organ donor there is part of AJ walking around and helping people.
It’s an offer that no discerning fashionista would want to refuse…coffee, cake and the latest autumn styles.
“We would like to give a big thank you to the passers-by who stopped and actually gave assistance to our darling son. Thank you very much.”
“We are delighted that New Image decided to support us once again and that their customers were so generous,” said St Luke’s Community Fundraiser Ellie Matthews.
As the investigation into Aaron’s death continues, officers remain keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision and anyone who was travelling in the area at the time and has dashcam footage, including footage of the vehicles prior to the collision.
The team at Hillsborough shop New Image in Middlewood Road hosted their annual coffee and cake day and raised a fantastic £500 for St Luke’s Hospice.
“Coffee and cake is always a winning combination and the amount raised is going to make a great difference to the lives of all our patients and their families. “We hope that many more people will follow the New Image lead and host their own St Luke’s coffee morning. “Everything you need to make your fundraising event a success - including a selection of mouthwatering cake recipes - is available to download now at the St Luke’s website.”

SHEFFIELD DIPPERS TACKLE MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH In a tale of resilience and camaraderie, meet Josh and Tom, two pals on a mission to make a difference. Having weathered their fair share of life's storms, they understood the profound impact of having a strong support system. Driven by a desire to pay it forward, they set out to create that very support for other men facing challenges. Embracing the healing power of cold water immersion and the rejuvenating rhythm of hiking, Josh and Tom discovered a transformative journey that extended beyond the physical realm into the depths of mental well-being. Recognising the profound benefits they experienced, the dynamic duo became determined to share this positive impact with as many men as possible. Their initiative, rooted in the belief that everyone deserves a supportive community, quickly gained momentum. Josh and Tom opened their
arms wide, declaring, "All men are welcome." Their inclusive approach emphasised that it didn't matter who you are or where you come from – in this community, judgment has no place.
Week after week, the group grew, becoming a beacon of hope and encouragement for men seeking solace and connection. The shared experiences of cold water immersions and scenic hikes became more than just physical activities; they became powerful tools for fostering mental resilience and building lasting bonds. In a world where solidarity is often hard to come by, Josh and Tom's initiative stands as a testament to the transformative power of friendship, nature, and a shared commitment to well-being. Their story is a reminder that, no matter the challenges one faces, a supportive community can be a source of strength, healing, and positive change.

Mum and three children trapped as dogs fought - police A mother and three young children were trapped in a room while three dogs fought inside a home, police said. Officers were called to a property in Sheffield on Saturday, and seized five dogs, believed to be bully XLs and Cane Corso breeds, writes Chloe Laversuch for BBC News. A baby was among the children trapped in the house while the animals fought. South Yorkshire Police said one person suffered minor injuries and a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and child neglect. He has since been released on bail.
'Aggressively fighting' Police said the woman had locked herself and the children in a room for their own safety. Officers said the dogs were significantly underweight and three of them were believed to be "aggressively fighting". Two of the animals had illegally cropped ears. Ch Insp Emma Cheney said: "We are not here to take dogs away from their families, we are not here to put dogs to sleep, we are here to protect people, especially those who cannot protect themselves, such as children." She urged people to contact police if they have concerns about dogs or the safety of children.
Callum Rutherford, 26, of Lee Avenue in Sheffield, Jake Lakin, 22, of Smithy Moor Avenue in Sheffield, and Arron Hartigan, 26, of Meynell Crescent in Sheffield have been on trial since Monday 3 October charged with manslaughter, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. The charges related to the death of 40-yearold Nadeem Qureshi on 24 July 2019 off Station Road in Deepcar, near Stocksbridge. Following a six-week trial, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous or majority verdict in relation to the charges brought against the three men. Yesterday, a judge found all three not guilty of all offences.
Detective Constable Karen Edge, officer investigating the case, said: “This has been a complex and protracted investigation over a four-year period. Two previous trials have also taken place where the jury was unable to reach and return a verdict. As an investigating team, we have done everything possible to gather all available evidence to put before a court. “Throughout each of the three trials, Nadeem’s family have attended each and every day, and have shown the utmost dignity throughout, supporting our investigation in every way possible. Today, my thoughts remain with them. “As a force, we are not seeking anyone further in relation to Nadeem’s death and the investigation is now closed.”

It was a lively session with 4 committee members on hand to support residents and tenants to socialise, learn more about digital and have a cup of tea. Councillor Julie Grocutt also popped in to meet everyone and hear about the work of this hub. It was interesting to hear how they are navigating challenges such as an audience spread over a wide geographical area and a lack of suitable community spaces in the area. It was also great to see the power of the National Inclusion Network in the peer-topeer support they have been receiving from another Sheffield-based inclusion hub, Learn for Life. I loved meeting Sarah* who was quite rightly very proud and pleased with her recent achievement with digital, told in her own words here: “The podiatrist wanted me to go to the hospital. I needed to send the hospital a picture (for my appointment) and I wasn’t sure how to do it at all. So I did try and took a photograph with my phone. I tried my best but I couldn’t do it. But it is an old phone, so I went on my computer and I was really proud because I sent this photograph from my phone to my computer and then I saved the photograph into my images and attached it and sent it. I was so proud!”

NON-VIOLENT DIRECT ACTION Media coverage of Sheffield’s citywide tree campaign for positive, sustainable change has been strongly skewed, with a bias toward coverage of the non-violent direct action (NVDA) aspect of the struggle. As a result, many people incorrectly believe that NVDA ended the street tree conflict and ‘saved’ thousands of mature street trees.
In last week’s edition (23rd Nov) Marie Tidball says she has written to the MD of Northern Rail about the removal of the 17.51. Huddersfield to Sheffield service from 10th December and that she urges “Network Rail to reconsider this terrible decision The Sheffield City Council (SCC) plan to fell as quickly as possible.” 17,500 street trees stopped on 26/3/2018, when Ms Tidball added “Only Labour will put passengers the Forestry Commission (FC) wrote to SCC, back at the heart of our railways and deliver a better demanding evidence that exemptions to the deal for taxpayers by bringing rail back into public ‘Forestry (Exceptions from Restriction of Felling) ownership as contracts expire.” Regulations 1979’ applied. That day, a letter from the SCC Cabinet Member for Environment & I concur with Ms Tidball’s concern at the removal Street Scene - Cllr Bryan Lodge – appeared in of a peak-time service but I am surprised that a The Star. On 16/7/2018, in an SCC response to a request dated 4/1/2017(Ref: FOI / 3453), annual felling quotas for each part of the city were revealed, in a document created on 21/2/2012. SCC had planned to fell 5,858 trees before 2018, during the ‘Core Investment Period’ (CIP) of the £2.2bn ‘Streets Ahead’ highway maintenance project. On 29/1/2016, The Star reported that the SCC Leader – Cllr Julie Dore - had informed that 3,388 trees had been felled. Commenting in The Star, on 8/1/2016, SCC announced that it would cost £26 million to ‘save’ the other 2,470 CIP trees.

Upper Don Trails As readers may recall the Town Deal Board finally revealed its proposals for a cut-down version of the Trails project at a four hour drop-in event at Smithymoor Community Centre on 19th October. For those who might have missed this brief event here is our summary and observations: Extension of the existing Bramall Lane/Steel Valley trail down Underbank Lane to new signalised crossing of Manchester Road connecting to Underbank This is the most useful and only strategic proposal and we support it warmly but the route must link seamlessly via Old Manchester Road to the other new crossing of the bypass at Equitrek currently under construction. This is not clearly shown on the plans. A loop path around the northwest of Underbank with a new bridge Looks extremely challenging and expensive to build for the sake of a not-very attractive, sub-standard route, squeezed between the reservoir and the very heavily trafficked bypass, with an 80-metre section simply using the existing bypass footpath next to traffic. It largely duplicates the much more attractive and safer Little Don Extension recently completed by Barnsley MBC Other sections of improved trails largely tweak what is already there and hardly seem ambitious. These circular interventions will do nothing for active travel. At best a ‘nice to have’ and not a priority for scarce funding A short new bridleway connecting the car park to the south end of the dam wall This may be a modest improvement for horse riders but have any stakeholders been approached? The British Horse Society for instance has not.
On 16/10/2017, The Star reported: “Since the Sheffield’s Streets Ahead project began in 2012 5,600 Adding fifty spaces to the reservoir visitor car park trees have been felled, with 400 set for removal by the This huge increase in parking will draw more car traffic end of the year.” through the Stocksbridge centre, will not encourage active travel and regular users and residents fear it will According to SCC statistics, reported in the FC exacerbate issues around congestion as well as crime ‘Sheffield Tree Felling Investigation Report’ (dated and anti-social behaviour. Its not clear how this will 18/7/2019), by 2018, 5,362 street trees had been benefit businesses in the shopping centre either as the felled since ‘Streets Ahead’ services commenced in car park will become the destination for drivers August 2012. By 25/5/2018, the total was 5,663. FC Unspecified improvements to the existing Activity intervention ‘saved’ the 11,837 other mature street Centre to facilitate water born sports trees. There is no content for this element – the current NVDA did not stop or end the conflict, nor the plan operator isn’t even named. More information required to fell more. However, NVDA was useful; it created before any meaningful consultation. media opportunities, maintained media interest and Reforestation south of the reservoir by Yorkshire pressure on SCC, and continued to raise awareness Water and support. The media coverage later encouraged people to vote for a change in the system of local This project is already well under way and has little to do with improving access . Apart from this element its government, in May 2021, enabling greater access to unclear what commitment YW has made to additional information and scrutiny of policies and plans. funding within the Levelling Up timeframe. Arguably, NVDA created enough interest for The Yorkshire Post (TYP) to persuade the Secretary of State for Environment - Michael Gove - to visit Sheffield (on 27/9/2017) and meet tree campaign representatives. This, & NVDA, prompted a change to the Highways Act 1980 (Section 96A). See Issue 1234 of Look Local (online). It is likely that the FC may not have intervened without pressure from Mr Gove. Paragraph 510 of the ‘Sheffield Street Trees Inquiry’ report (dated 6/3/2023) quotes from a court witness statement, provided by the SCC Director of Culture & Environment – Paul Billington: “Between 1-29 June 2017, 472 tree-fells were attempted, 329 of which were abandoned due to the Direct Action.”
The Underbank project is presented as a ‘fait accompli’ yet is shown to be only at a very tentative stage with many unanswered issues. There is still no explanation of why the rest of the much more ambitious and strategic original Trails project was dropped in May. No consultation whatsoever took place with either stakeholders or the public on this major decision. The September STD Board minutes say £1.75m is already to be lopped off the Trails project and transferred to High Street projects. This was a month in advance of the consultation and seems premature.
Useful low-cost elements of the previous proposals such as proper signage for all trails around Stocksbridge including Underbank, or safer provision for walkers and cyclists on Hunshelf in the heart of Stocksbridge These figures were reported in TYP, on 15/8/2017. have also been dropped. These elements of the Trails project should at least be reinstated as requested by Felling dates for those trees had to be postponed, several stakeholders in a meeting with the Project indefinitely – long enough for them to be ‘saved’ by Champions in August but with no response. FC intervention. See issue 1292 of Look Local. The fact that the plans were only uploaded eleven days Note: on 5/2/2016, a court injunction, granted to after the drop-in consultation event with no feedback Mr David Dillner (Founder of Sheffield Tree Action form or deadline for responses does not give confidence Groups; then STAG Chairman), imposed a three in the seriousness of the exercise. month ‘pause’ on the felling of street trees. We therefore suggest - continue with the Underbank Lane/Manchester Road crossing, drop the car parking On 19/6/2023, the SCC Chief Executive (Kate Josephs) and ‘loop’ elements and look at more strategic presented her report - ‘Learning From The Past interventions on the wider Stocksbridge Trails network And Moving Ahead: response to the Sheffield street including signage and genuine contributions to active tree Inquiry’ - to the SCC ‘Strategy and Resources travel and road safety . Produce a proper Business Committee’. Jack’s Famous Little Mesters renovation keeps Sheffield’s Story industrial spirit alive In a compelling narrative that unfolds from the heart of Deepcar, an author, Mark Foster, has just penned a poignant tribute to his late father's extraordinary journey. Titled 'Jack's Story,' the book delves into the gripping account of Mark Foster's father, who served in the British Army during National Service in the 1950s. The narrative reaches its zenith with his father's selection to the esteemed SAS Parachute Regiment and subsequent deployment in the jungles of Malaya during the often-overlooked Malayan Emergency conflict. "Jack's Story" unveils the true tale of a rebellious teenager from 1950s Sheffield who, grappling with the stringent Army regime, ultimately finds himself aligned with the notion that in the Army, victory is the only constant. Settling into the disciplined rhythm of military life, he volunteers for service in the Far East, paving the way for a remarkable journey fraught with challenges and resilience. Mark Foster, the Deepcar-based author, shared that the inspiration for the book was born out of a desire to shed light on his father's experiences and those of others who served in the Malayan Emergency—a conflict that has faded from the collective memory. Despite his father's passing earlier this year, Foster remains steadfast in his commitment
Leah’s Yard dates to the early 19th century and was once home to up to 18 Little Mesters workshops producing the finest cutlery, handles and silver stampers that helped to put Sheffield on the worldwide map.

"Jack's Story" serves as a tribute to the unsung heroes of the largely forgotten conflict in Malaya, providing readers with a window into the challenges, sacrifices, and triumphs of that era. The book, a labour of love and remembrance, is now available to the public on Amazon, allowing readers to delve into the rich tapestry of Jack's experiences and the broader narrative of a generation that often stood in the shadows of history. The business was then extended to complete the final phase of the project. “As a local SME contractor, the Leah’s Yard project has had a huge impact on our business,” said Director Paul Roberts, who runs the firm with business partner Ray Fowler. “We’ve delivered specialist public sector projects in the past such as re-roofing work at Sheffield’s Kelham Island Museum over

Injured players to return
Michael Nicholson and Peter Beaver competed in the Wilmslow Festive 10k. The race saw Michael grab a pb for the distance in 43-52. A good number of Penistone runners also took part in the Doncaster 10k. On the parkrun scene George Parr finished first at the Penistone parkrun in 17-32. Lauren Lees was second at the Sheffield Olympic legacy junior parkrun. Dawn Broom completed her 500th parkrun at Cardiff, there were milestone also for Kirsty Rogers (100), Flynn Rogers (100) and Richard Docker (50).
CHURCH LEAVE IT LATE
Five minutes after the restart a defensive misunderstanding allowed Golcar’s Oliver Russon to place the ball over keeper Chris Snaith’s head to equalise.
Swashbuckling back-rower Liam O’Leary has been named the winner of the John Crawshaw Butchers Man of Steel award for November after a string of impressive performances during the Month.
Church’s winner came deep into injury time, Tom Brennan’s (pictured) persistence claiming all three points for Church.
His ability to carry the ball, and gain valuable metres after contact, plus a great work rate in defence has seen O’Leary edge out evergreen forward Ricky ‘Rooney’ James & veteran playmaker Ricky Christopherson for the trophy.
Assistant Manager Brett Lovell It was a game of two halves. We were good value for the first half, I wouldn’t say we were outstanding but we played the system well.
With no game at the weekend, the walking wounded at Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby have been using the time to help their rehab from injury.
We were quietly pleased at half time with the way we were playing, if there was anything negative it was that we’d not taken two or three of our chances when they came along but we were happy to go in one-nil.
Young flyer Tom Kerr looks to have shaken his recent hamstring pull and is set to be available, whilst Club Captain, Adam Frith is a doubt for next weekend's fixture against the students of Leeds Medics & Dentists as he struggles with a soft tissue injury on his ankle joint. More serious news for the Club is the knee injury suffered by talismanic back-rower Pete Newton, which will now require surgery to repair a damaged ACL & a premature end to a promising season for the unfortunate flanker.
Toolstation NCEL Premier Division
This week’s Round 9 clash at Coal Pit Lane will kick off at 2.15pm on Saturday, and the freescoring students are fresh from a 116-point hammering of basement club Knaresborough at the weekend. Stocksbridge will then visit the East Coast to face Hessle RUFC under the Humber Bridge, before returning home to face old foes Thornensians in Round 11 on 16th December, designated as the Christmas Jumper fixture, with a prize for the best festive jumper on view.
Valley Hill Runner
Off the field the Clubhouse has announced all day opening for Members on Christmas Day, so come along & celebrate.
having tired legs from the cycling Phil was the first Penistone runner back finishing in 34th overall in a time of 1-00-58. First female runner back for Penistone was Suzanne McGill who was 23rd female finisher in 1-17-12. Prizes were awarded to Ray Brown for being the oldest runner in the race and to Phil and Robin for their runs in borrowed gear.
Penistone Church 2-1 Golcar United Antony Brown 45, Tom Brennan 90+5 (pictured)
The second half was a bit of a different story, we stopped playing the way we did in the first half and we didn’t have as much success. That said, we were defensively disciplined, Tom Brennan and James Stafford were really good centrally and both full backs did really well too, ably backed up by Snaithy in goal whose handling’s been second to none.
Church went one up just before half time when Jordan Coduri played the ball through for Nathan Keightley, who crossed for Antony Brown to slot the ball home to make it one nil.
Beth Louise one of Valley Hill Runners newest members took part in the Doncaster 10k. This is her second weekend running a 10k. She has only recently taken up running after having a baby starting at concord parkrun on Saturday mornings. “Since joining VHR Beth hasn't looked back we are all super proud of her efforts.” Jayne Grayson female captain.

Steels gain gutsy win Stocksbridge Park Steels Stocksbridge Park Steels got back to winning ways in the league with a 2-0 win over Cleethorpes Town. Steels almost had the lead within the minute. After pushing back when Cleethorpes tried to get an attack going, Stocksbridge countered as Luke Rawson looked to get an attack of their own going. His dribbling got a lucky bounce allowing him to get through but his finish inside the box would end up going over. It wouldn’t take long for Stocksbridge to get their goal, in fact it was just three minutes later. Crisp passing on the edge of the box saw the ball fall to Basille Zottos. He took the ball past one defender before slamming it into the bottom corner, easing the nerves of the home fans in the process. The rest of the half went as planned for Stocksbridge as they had control of the game. Zottos continued to cause problems for the Cleethorpes defence and would have an effort saved by James McKeown. Charlie Oglesby was also close to connecting to a corner, but he just mistimed it and Cleethorpes were able to defend. While the Owls were looking better at the end of the half, it would remain 1-0 to the Steels at the break.

Cleethorpes Town FC
Cleethorpes continued their good play in the second half and looked to cause problems. And cause a problem they did. Dan Gallimore tried an effort from long range and it was almost a stunner as it cracked off the bar. Ross Goodwin then cleared it under pressure, going to the ground as he did so along with a Cleethorpes attacker. There was a bit of afters, which Ben Townsend reacted badly to, pushing over the Owls man. This led to a stoppage in play and after consultation with the linesman, the penalty was given. Curtis Bateson stepped up and blasted the ball over, ending a chaotic couple of minutes. If Cleethorpes were already angry at everything that happened, they were going to be more upset soon. Kurtis Turner whipped in a free kick and Goodwin got onto it, forcing an impressive save from McKeown. It fell to Oglesby though who was able to smash home from close range and give Stocksbridge a comfortable lead. The game petered out and Stocksbridge were able to hold on for a massive win with the Photo by Myra Little Steels climbing out of the relegation zone thanks to the victory. Next Home Game: Saturday 2 December, 3pm KO, v Consett.
TIGERS READY TO RETAIN TITLE

Chapeltown beat Champions Chapeltown RBL 3-2 Stannington Village
Chapeltown RBL completed a league double over reigning champions Stannington Village in an entertaining game at St George’s Park. SHEFFIELD team manager Simon Stead says the club’s focus is already firmly on successfully retaining their Premiership crown. The Tru Plant Tigers pulled off a historymaking comeback against Ipswich in October as they won the top-flight league title for the first time ever. And club bosses have wasted little time in assembling their septet for next term with Jack Holder, Tai Woffinden, Chris Holder, Josh Pickering, Kyle Howarth, Jason Edwards and Dan Gilkes all back at Owlerton. Said Stead: “This year was one everyone at Sheffield will never forget but now we have to start thinking about doing it all again in 2024. “Once you’ve won the league, the real challenge is trying to retain it.
“No matter what your team, you’re there to be shot at and you’re the one team the rest of the league wants to beat. “But we’ve put together something really, really special and you can see it’s another team built with real ambition and intent. “It’s got a great balance about it, it’s full of extremely talented speedway riders who all genuinely want to race for Sheffield and it’s a team full of great characters as well which can never be underestimated.” More can be read from Stead in the latest issue of Speedway Star with subscription information available at: https://www.speedwaystar.net/store/subscriptions. Meanwhile, another special Season Ticket sales event will be held at Owlerton Stadium’s Speedway Office on Saturday, December 2 between 11am and 1pm. Alternatively, they can be purchased online via: http:// www.sheffield-speedway.com/ticketofficea
Legion took the lead when Mikey Vella’s corner was met with a thumping header from Dave Millen after 20 minutes and it stayed that way until half time. Legion came out firing in the second half, as Jay Carter doubled the lead on 46 minutes firing in left footed. The goal of the game followed 2 minutes later, as Carter beat his man and crossed for Josh Savage who dummied the ball for Harley Wilson to slot home. Stannington pulled a goal back a minute later with a good Joel Purkiss finish, and they rallied to make it 3-2 in injury time with a good header leading to a nervous 6 minutes injury time, which RBL defended well for the 3 points.
