Mum and three children trapped as dogs fought - police A mother and three young children were trapped in a room while three dogs fought inside a home, police said. Officers were called to a property in Sheffield on Saturday, and seized five dogs, believed to be bully XLs and Cane Corso breeds, writes Chloe Laversuch for BBC News. A baby was among the children trapped in the house while the animals fought. South Yorkshire Police said one person suffered minor injuries and a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and child neglect. He has since been released on bail.
'Aggressively fighting' Police said the woman had locked herself and the children in a room for their own safety. Officers said the dogs were significantly underweight and three of them were believed to be "aggressively fighting". Two of the animals had illegally cropped ears. Ch Insp Emma Cheney said: "We are not here to take dogs away from their families, we are not here to put dogs to sleep, we are here to protect people, especially those who cannot protect themselves, such as children." She urged people to contact police if they have concerns about dogs or the safety of children.
Callum Rutherford, 26, of Lee Avenue in Sheffield, Jake Lakin, 22, of Smithy Moor Avenue in Sheffield, and Arron Hartigan, 26, of Meynell Crescent in Sheffield have been on trial since Monday 3 October charged with manslaughter, conspiracy to commit robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. The charges related to the death of 40-yearold Nadeem Qureshi on 24 July 2019 off Station Road in Deepcar, near Stocksbridge. Following a six-week trial, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous or majority verdict in relation to the charges brought against the three men. Yesterday, a judge found all three not guilty of all offences.
Detective Constable Karen Edge, officer investigating the case, said: “This has been a complex and protracted investigation over a four-year period. Two previous trials have also taken place where the jury was unable to reach and return a verdict. As an investigating team, we have done everything possible to gather all available evidence to put before a court. “Throughout each of the three trials, Nadeem’s family have attended each and every day, and have shown the utmost dignity throughout, supporting our investigation in every way possible. Today, my thoughts remain with them. “As a force, we are not seeking anyone further in relation to Nadeem’s death and the investigation is now closed.”
