More than a hundred golfers took to the greens at Hillsborough Golf Club to raise money in memory of Wadsley mum and daughter Jayne and Faye Downing.

Faye was just 29 when she lost her battle against breast cancer in 2022, leaving two small children, six-year-old Freddie and Marnie, who is three.

As a tribute, Faye’s dad Clive decided to host a special fundraising event on the greens at the Hillsborough club, where he is a lifelong member.

And by the time the last shot had been played, the 26 teams had raised £2,760.67 for St Luke’s Hospice, where Faye was a patient in the final stages of her illness.

Money was also raised for the Alzheimer’s Society, in mem ory of Clive’s wife Jayne, who died in June this year after be ing diagnosed with the condi tion in 2015.

“There are so many people I want to thank, including Hills borough Golf Club, family and friends who supported the event and my daughter Han nah, who has been a real rock through all this difficult time for the family,” said Clive. The fundraising now contin ues for Clive, who has signed up to take part in the Sheffield 10k.

And he will also be urging friends to take to the greens with him again in 2024, with another fundraiser at Hills borough Golf Club already booked in for July 12.

A SUNNY SUCCESS

Last Sunday, Eccles eld Park hosted its annual Gala to help raise funds for the charity Macmillan Cancer Support.

e park was full of stalls, enthusiastic volunteers, local businesses, and members of the public enjoying the sun whilst supporting a fantastic cause. It was a day suitable for all; furry friends were also welcome and enjoyed a trot around.

Locals were welcomed into the park with live music performed by a brass band who were working hard under the September sun and providing a lively and upbeat environment.

e rst stall I came across was the Macmillan refreshments kiosk, o ering a selection of drinks and bakes.

Other stalls consisted of a penalty shoot-out stand, the gala's

iconic Astroglide slide, and of course a hook-a-duck.

e gala also hosted its own car show with a selection of di erent impressive motors, meaning there was something for everyone.

If peckish, there were several street food stalls for a snack and a shaved ice stand to accommodate a sweet dessert whilst keeping cool in the heat.

Ra e tables were a popular hit at the gala, with prizes being donated from individuals but also local businesses, including e Fizz Bar (Chapeltown), Come A Casa (Chapeltown), Polka Dot (Eccles eld), and many more!

ough the total raised has not yet been announced, the gala has a Facebook page and is due to post an update any time soon. Well done to all involved it was a great turnout for an extremely important cause.

We are all things energy.

Another in our occasional series...

Warming Project bid has been successful

We were recently successful with a bid from e National Lottery to run our Community Warming Project this autumn.

It is a new project that aims to reduce the energy consumption in the homes of the most disadvantaged members of our community, so making them easier and cheaper to heat and run.

We will work with local support agencies who will refer households in greatest need to us. We would then identify which simple insulation and energy saving measures would make the most di erence and arrange to have them tted free of charge.

We are very excited to be able to o er this support to local people who are in fuel poverty as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

We will be launching the project at our AGM in September and would like to invite our local support agencies to attend – foodbanks, drop in centres, Tenants And Residents Associations, GPs, etc e meeting is on ursday 21 st September at St Ann’s Church Hall, Haywood Lane. S36 2QQ at 6.30pm.

We will be writing to you all soon, so please come along and nd out more about the project. Please contact us on the details below if you’d like further information or would like to join us.

Together we can make a di erence! ermal Imaging surveys Our surveys will recommence in the autumn because we need a big difference in temperature between the inside of a heated house and the cooler outside to ensure good results.

Please contact us at the address or number below if you would like to book a survey. Home visits. It was great to see some of you at our Oughtibridge home visit in July and we had some good feedback: “I found it all very useful… especially your attention to detail and investment in renewables and your engineering ingenuity for some of the changes you have implemented.

“ e information from both homes was fascinating!"

Look out for information about our next event soon. Email: udcommunityenergy@gmail.com Tel: 07707 762995

Step up to Support Dogs’ charity 10k challenge

Runners can help a charity’s lifesaving work by taking part in this year’s She eld 10k. She eld based charity, Support Dogs, has a limited number of spaces in one of South Yorkshire’s biggest runs.

e cause, established in 1992, provides and trains assistance dogs to help autistic children, adults with epilepsy and adults with a physical disability to live safer, more independent lives. It relies entirely on voluntary donations.

To take part in the She eld 10k on behalf of Support Dogs, all the charity asks is that participants raise £100 to guarantee their place.

Lottie Walker, community fundraising manager with Support Dogs, said: “We have had many runners taking part in She eld 10k in previous years and they have all said how rewarding it is to run for such a remarkable cause.

“Our dogs are trained to help detect epileptic seizures up to an hour before they happen, to sup-

port autistic children or to assist people with a physical disability, such as cerebral palsy or Multiple Sclerosis. Our clients say they can’t imagine their lives without these dogs.

“By taking up a space, runners are helping us to fund these invaluable, life-changing services.”

e race, staged in partnership with She eld City Council, takes place at 9.30am on Sunday, September 24, starting and ending at Arundel Gate and taking in a route that comprises Charter Row, Rustlings Road, Graham Road, Riverdale Road, Endcli e Vale Road, Brocco Bank and Eccleshall Road.

ousands took part last year and it is guaranteed to be bigger and better this year.

e deadline to apply for a Support Dogs place is Wednesday, September 13.

Like Sudoku, no single number

can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Dear Editor

I wonder if the people of Hillsborough know of a planning application has been made for the old Vision Express shop, on 88 Midlewood Road. To convert to a H.M.O for 14 rooms and 2 kitchens. How can they let this happen in the middle of a row of retail shops in the Hillsborough shopping area.

South Yorkshire Heritage SitesStocksbridge Clock Tower

The South Yorkshire Heritage List identifies local assets in the community which provide distinctiveness and history about that area. Currently a number of assets are being considered to be added to the list including the Stocksbridge Clock Tower, which stands in a prominent position in the town and is a place where annually we hold a remembrance service for those from the town who were lost in wars.

Kind regards Resident of 40 years

High Green In Bloom gala

To all those who came to our "Party In The Park " last Saturday, Sept.2nd, we hope you all had an enjoyable time . The weather was certainly in our favour. We are particularly grateful to Ecclesfield Parish Council and to Sheffield City Council for granting us the funds to be able to provide free rides for all the children

High Green In Bloom can be found working in Mortomley Park most Saturday mornings and we will always welcome new volunteers. No gardening experience necessary , just your enthusiasm.

This year we celebrate the centenary of the Clock Tower, so I feel it would be a fitting tribute to have this wonderful landmark added to the list.

The consultation is currently open and comments can be made on the below link.

Broken Promises

Why is it now with millions of families in need Finding iot difficult their children to feed

In this world we are the sixth richest

This fact forgotten at reporters behest

Wages are low, prices too high striking workers chant

For a fair income, just enough to meet both needs and want

Government Ministers ignore fact they say Indeed insist that taxes must the countries debt. Pay

Which they accrued by careless management in the past

Promising to raise/incomes soon and fast

But with promises, like pie crust, easily, easily broken

Workers are used to pomisary words spoken Countless times hearing these words, mere token No longer are willing to listen hearken

No wonder in desperation they go on strike In is no ust to look for work Elswhere, even by bike!

Sheila Gent, 90

Dear Look Local

In last week's article on the towns fund plan you covered the words of Miriam Cates (member of parliament, vice chair of Stocksbridge towns fund, chair of The New Social Covenant, National Conservative and New Conservative). Good words.

'Vision' 'Regeneration' 'Improvement' 'Transformational investment'

Here's a list of projects that (if they actually happened) live up to the words.

A train link to Sheffield ( like we had on the line that is still there).

Good buses to Sheffield and Manchester (like we had).

A team of local people employed to insulate our homes.

A new local business Innovation fund.

Foundation of a popular thriving college (like the one opened in Stocksbridge by Harold Wilson).

A theatre, art space and cinema ( in the cinema ).

A youth service that opens every day and evening (like Kev ran ....where could you possibly do that ...oh maybe in the youth centre )

Here's a list of things that won't live up to the words.

New shop fronts.

Demolition of the library. A hub.

( Our season will start on Monday 18th September and usually runs until the following May. This year however we will have to find another venue after Christmas if/when the Library is closed for redevelopment work to commence.)

WHO? Anyone interested then please come along and give us a try at NO COST. Everyone is welcome from beginners to more advanced workers.

WHY? We will have a programme of activities and speakers which should help you improve your photography. The first night will just be a social night so feel free to bring along your cameras and images for a chat.

Anyone interested is joining should contact: Andy Barnes 07783 663 089 John Bailey 01226 244 326

College appoints Deputy CEO

Barnsley College has announced the appointment of a Deputy Chief Executive Officer, as it welcomes a new chapter after making changes to its executive team.

The College’s Vice Principal of Technical and Professional Education, Gavin Batty, has been successfully appointed to the position of Deputy CEO and will take up the role from September.

Gavin has worked in the education sector for more than 20 years, spending 17 of those cumulatively at Barnsley College. Initially joining as a Lecturer, he worked his way up to become a Head of Department and most recently, Vice Principal.

In his current role, Gavin drives innovation and development across technical and professional education, ensuring high-quality education and training opportunities are widely available both in Barnsley and across the South Yorkshire region.

Lorraine Hall, currently Quality Director at Lifetime Training, will also join Barnsley College in October as Vice Principal, Quality. She brings a wealth of experience gained through senior roles and more than two decades working with quality and Apprenticeship teams at colleges and national training providers.

Former Deputy Principal, David Akeroyd, took up his new position as Principal and Chief Executive on Tuesday 1 August, which will see him build on the College’s Ofsted Outstanding judgement and the quality of teaching and learning that has seen it become a sector trailblazer.

David Akeroyd, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, said: “I am delighted to have appointed both Gavin and Lorraine to our Executive team.

“I have been privileged to work alongside Gavin since joining Barnsley College in 2020 and have seen firsthand the impact his leadership and direction has had on our College, the curriculum and the development of our T Level and wider technical offer.

“This is a pivotal time for the College, and I have no doubt that he and Lorraine will help to drive it forward as we go through a period of evolution in pursuit of providing more of the sector leading opportunities our students and young people truly deserve.”

Speaking of his new appointment, Gavin Batty, now Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Barnsley College, said: “Born and raised within Barnsley and as a former student of the College, I am a passionate advocate for our town and will continue to make sure Barnsley College sits at the heart of our fabulous community and serves it with distinction.

“As we continue to develop and evolve the College and our curriculum, I will strive to ensure Further and Higher Education is accessible and that our students develop the life and technical skills needed to be successful personally and professionally.

“From the implementation of T Levels through to the establishment of a new Institute of Technology, it is an exciting time to be in the Further Education sector and leading the College in this new role.”

Simon Perryman, Chair of Governors at Barnsley College, added: “I am delighted, on behalf of the board to share the news of our new appointments to the College executive team.

“We are confident that these appointments will support David as he leads the College in its next chapter, providing an exceptional education for people in Barnsley and the wider South Yorkshire region.”

Bronze for MATT AT Wilne 10k

Martin Ball and Matt Robinson made the trip over to Derbyshire to compete in the Wilne 10k. In the extremely hot weather both runners did well on the fast, flat course to both finish high up in their respective age categories.

In the men’s over50 age category Martin was 5th in a time of 37-09. Matt gained a bronze grabbing third place in the men’s over55 in a time of 37-47.

In good running conditions several Penistone footpath runners took on the Denby Dash trail race in Upper Denby. It was the 7th edition of this popular village race. A 5.6 mile (9km) scenic and undulating course on footpaths through fields, woodland, conser vation land and the historic Quaker Village at High Flatts with a total ascent of 700ft.

First back for Penistone was Phil Hinchliffe in 9th place overall closely followed by club mate Jon Hallam in 10th. First lady back for Penistone was Valentina Wright. Keith Gordon was in the prizes again claiming first

which attracted 38 competitors competing as individuals or pairs. The overall winner was Tom Fryers scoring a maximum 40 points, second went to George Parr who also scored a maximum 40 but in a slight slower time. First lady was Emma Moore with 26 points. First pair were Flynn and Kirsty Rogers with 26 points. On the parkrun scene there were first places for Julia Johnson (Aberystwyth), George Parr (Barnsley) and Flynn Rogers (Hillsborough Juniors).

James Mumford was second at the Graves parkrun. Tom Bridges chalked up his 50th parkrun and Bon Innes hit the 200 parkrun mark.

Tigers slump to heavy defeat

SHEFFIELD boss Simon Stead admitted they badly missed injured No.1 Tai Woffinden during Monday’s 53-37 defeat at Peterborough.

The triple World Champion was ruled out of the contest at the East of England Arena having crashed out of Saturday’s Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain, sustaining a hand injury in the process.

The Tru Plant Tigers operated rider replacement in his absence which delivered just five points in total.

The Owlerton outfit managed just four race wins at Alwalton, three from Tobiasz Musie lak and one from Kyle Howarth - and Stead admits the hosts were deserved winners.

“We were beaten by the better team and sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say we weren’t good enough,” he said.

“We were missing the brilliance of Tai Woffin den; the display he put on last time he was here could’ve made all the difference.

“But he wasn’t here and we weren’t able to cover him and we suffered for that.

“Fair play to Rob (Lyon - Peterborough team manager) and his boys thought they got the job done and we now need to regroup and produce a better performance on Thursday.”

The Tigers are back in home action on Thurs day (September 7, 7.30) when they host Wolverhampton.

PETERBOROUGH 53: Benjamin Basso 12, Ben Cook 10+1, Chris Harris 9+2, Jordan Jenkins 9+2, Vadim Tarasenko 7+1, Artem Laguta 6, Niels-Kristian Iversen R/R.

SHEFFIELD 37: Tobiasz Musielak 16, Josh Pickering 9+1, Kyle Howarth 6+1, Chris Holder 5+3, Claus Vissing 1, Jason Edwards 0, Tai Woffinden R/R.

Peterborough win the aggregate point 95-85

Defeat on road

Aireborough 37-7 Stocksbridge

Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby began their Counties 4 Yorkshire league season with a defeat away at much fancied Aireborough Rugby.

The round one clash was always going to be a struggle for Head Coach Andhy Lawrence and his squad due to injuries and availability issues.

However, the team competed well for large parts of the game, and were well in the game trailing just 18pts to 7pts at the half time break.

Some fine defensive tackling by youngsters Harrison ‘whiskers’ Norman and Dylan O’Keefe helped keep the home side at bay, whilst a good all round performance from bulky back rower Pete Newton, was rewarded with Stocksbridge’s sole try and that man Adam Frith was on hand to add the conversion.

The larger home pack began to dominate during the 2nd half and they stretched the visitors defence to register further tries, resulting in a final score of Aireborough Rugby 37pts – Stocksbridge Rugby 7pts.

Pete Newton was awarded the Fox Catering Man of the Match award for a busy game on both sides of the ball, whilst the game also featured a welcome return to 1st XV action from former Supremo Rhys Keenan, coming off the bench for a 20minute cameo.

Whilst the result was disappointing, there was enough grit and resolve to give skipper Frith plenty of hope for the season, ‘it’s just one game’ he said, adding ‘we showed glimpses of what we’re about, with our training and game plan coming together in parts, so there is a platform for us to build on’.

Stocksbridge will have the opportunity to bounce back at the weekend with a winnable Round 2 clash against York RI at Coal Pit Lane, kick off 3pm, all are welcome.

The impressive Nathan Keightley scored both the goals in a man of the match performance, but it was the defensive resolve of the team that saw them claim the three points.

Manager Steve Lenthall

“At times we’ve made hard work of it, we weren't at our best but we won the game twonil. For the majority of the game they’ve probably been better than us, they’ve just lacked in the final third. The positive out of it is that we got three points, we managed to get a clean sheet and score which we haven’t done in the last two or three games.

Huge credit to our keeper Chris Snaith, he’s pulled two great saves off, we could have been looking at a two-nil deficit. Our other keeper Harry Ambler pulled some quality saves midweek at Hallam. That’s the advantage of having two quality keepers and rotating them Tom Brennan was immense when he replaced James Stafford in defence at half time, he won

It took just 6 minutes for Jed Phillips to set Luis Afonso-Ferreira free and he lobbed the goalkeeper first time.

Brandon Whitfield went on a mazy run beating several defenders and his cross was turned home for an own goal.

Mikey Vella then forced the keeper in to a good stop but Philips was on hand to fire home for 3-0 after 30 minutes.

Captain Josh Savage powered through midfield and was fouled, with referee John Reeves playing an excellent advantage, allowing Whitefield to find the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Man of the match Afonso-Ferreira then crossed from wide and Vella volleyed home first time to make it 5 on the stroke of half time.

In blistering heat the pace of the game slowed in the second half, and when Dave Millen was fouled in the box Vella stepped up for his second.

Sixers didn’t give up and Lewis Fox produced an excellent one on one stop late on the preserve the clean sheet.
