FAMILY A TRIP OF A
Written By James Fletcher
A NHS worker has secretly raised thousands of pounds to help her best friend and her family reach their dream holiday destination, a er a devastating cancer diagnosis.
Fiona Wylde started a ‘GoFundMe’ page only weeks ago with the intent to raise just £1,000 to help her best friend, Danielle and her family take a dream trip to Mexico, but thanks to the heartwarming people of Shefeld she has not only reached her target. She smashed it out of the park with the pot currently standing at £5,170 and still rising.
Fiona’s reason for starting this was when she heard that Mike, Danielle’s husband aged 44, was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2021 and a er numerous treatments going back and forth to the hospital. Mike was informed that the treatment he was receiving is only prolonging his life, not saving it.
She described Mike and Danielle as hardworking, fun to be around, determined and the type of people who would give you the shirt o their back if the situation called for it. e couple still get up every morning and go to work even with this dark cloud over them knowing time is against them.
Fiona also described their daughter, 12 year old Amelia in the GoFundMe bio as, “A kid with a teenage/adult outlook on life, a beauty in her own league. e double of her mother in her sarcastic ways with humour to match. An absolute gem in a world of duds.”
Danielle works tirelessly putting all the hours in under the sun just so she can try to a ord to take this dream trip, and also so, she can attend appointments with her husband. But now thanks to everyone who has donated a little bit, Danielle feels that pressure li ed o her shoulders and is extremely humbled and gobsmacked by the generosity being demonstrated, she continued to say,
“I just want to thank everyone who has donated. I was working an insane number of hours to try and a ord to take Mike on this trip and now, I feel that pressure li ed. Sometimes you lose faith in humanity and then in times like this they come together, I can’t put into words what this means to me and my family.” Danielle said,
Danielle and Mike have always talked about travelling around the world once they retired but now it seems as though those retirement plans have been scuppered. But with the money already raised at least, they can see one part of the world and enjoy warm weather, good food and glorious sandy beaches while sipping on a Tequila.
Now that the nancial pressure has been li ed, Danielle and Mike can spend more time with their daughter with what limited time remains.

Victim named following fatal stabbing in sheffield
Sheffield on Wednesday (9 August) can now be named as Roger Leadbeater.
Roger, aged 74, was fatally stabbed whilst walking his springer spaniel, Max, through an area of parkland off Shortbrook Close in Westfield on Wednesday evening.
Officers were called shortly before 11pm to reports that a man had been found with serious stab wounds to his chest. The ambulance service also attended and the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 32-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police
Today (11 August), the man has been identified as Roger and his family members are being supported by officers. They have paid tribute to their loved one, and released a photo of Roger. Their tribute states:
"Roger was a 74-year-old man out walking his beloved dog, Max, when his life was taken in the most brutal and cruel way. Even as Roger lay fatally injured, Max never left his side.
"Roger doted on his family and was a good, hard working and decent man. Even at 74, he still worked for Sheffield City Council, driving children to school with special needs.
"As a family, we can barely believe such a kind, gentle soul could be taken in such a way."

Sheffield woman to represent Team GB
Hannah Mellor, 23 is set to represent Team GB in the upcoming Pole and Aerial Sports Championships in October 2023, to be held in Poland.
Hannah will be competing in the over 18s Aerial Hoop in this year’s Championships which consists of performing gymnastics around a circular hoop, suspended high from the ground and will gain points by performing 11 set moves that are stipulated by the rules. Hannah has been involved in the sport since 2015 and after her performance in the Netherlands, in June of this year, she qualified and was selected to represent Team GB as a result.
The IPSF is a non-profitable organisation that aims to promote Pole and Aerial athletics around the world with 21 different age and skill categories, ranging from youth level to what they call Master level with over 40 countries set to compete worldwide.
And prides itself on a formal and non-bias platform when it comes to awarding points, the sport operates with over 100 rules which must be abided by all athletes during the competition and could cost them points. Some of these rules range from not performing a particular move to not having the correct costume.
Hannah was over the moon following her qualification in the Netherlands and when
flexible Working act 2023 receives Royal assent
asked how she felt about being chosen to represent her country she said,
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to represent my country in a sport that I love. I’m excited to get going and hopefully, this sparks an interest in the sport throughout the UK as the federation is working hard to get this sport represented in the Olympics.”
Hannah is also a representative of the British Pole and Aerial Federation with classes ranging from novice to expert level and is a great form of exercise.
Written By James Fletcher Employment Relations
(Flexible Working) Bill has been approved to undergo minor changes upon receiving Royal Assent.
The Flexible Working Act was introduced in 2019 by the conservative party to look at amongst other things the transparency of flexible working in the UK. And now with the Royal Assent approval on the 20th of July 2023, it is very likely that the new changes will be brought into force which employers will have to be aware of.
Employers may be looking at this new bill as being potentially problematic for them and their businesses as many employers fear the sheer influx of new requests from their employees. This new legislation is unlikely to cause any real change to the previous one but instead will predominantly just change how such requests are handled according to ‘Worknest’.
The four key changes employers and employees will see according to ‘Work-
nest’ will be that employees will be able to make two requests in a 12-month period, employees will no longer have to explain themselves for the change, employers will have to deal with the request within a two-month period, not three. Finally, the employer is required to consult with the employee upon rejecting such a request.
Even with these minor changes that are very likely to be implemented, this is a great chance for employers to prepare for the impending change to come into effect, as the new changes will likely be put into force in the next 12 months, 2024 as the Act will require an Accompanying Code of Practice. This gives employers time to update their Flexible Code of Practice ready to be released from the date these changes come into effect.

As August is national wellness month, I decided to try out a new self care practice to help improve my mental and physical health. Last Thursday I went to see Faye Balme of Healing Hands, based in Ecclesfield, for an evening Reiki session. To begin with I was completely unfamiliar with the practice, I went in with an open mind not knowing what to expect but excited nevertheless. But, before I talk about my experience, let me give you a bit of background to offer you a glimpse of what Reiki is all about. And it really will be just a glimpse, as the Reiki world is huge and there is so much to learn, so bear with me, I’m still a beginner… The key word in all of this? Chakras.
I’d never heard of chakras before Thursday evening, essentially they are energy centres. They start at the bottom of the spine and run all the way up to the crown of your head. Faye explained to me how we have seven different chakras in our body, all which hold different functions. Starting from the bottom of your spine, the first chakra is your root chakra. Its responsibility is to remove toxins from the body. Each chakra reflects a colour of its elements and surroundings, the root chakra radiates red. Next is the sacral chakra, this reflects the colour orange and it helps expand elements such as relationships and creativity. This is located in the lower abdomen. Next up is the solar plexus that can be found just under the ribcage , this reflects the colour yellow and controls feelings such as anxiousness and confidence. We then have the heart
chakra, in the centre of the chest, which can be seen as green and allows us to experience love in its purest form. The last three, we have the throat chakra up next. Located… in the throat.
This reflects the colour blue and is responsible for communication. The third eye chakra, located in the centre of the forehead, relates to our intuition and perception. Lastly, the crown chakra is the guiding light that shows us the way, it reflects purple and is on the very top of your head.
Reiki is said to have many different benefits including reducing stress and anxiety as well as strengthening your immune system. It is believed to help relieve discomfort or pain, help meditative states and promote self awareness. Basically it seems the answer to a huge chunk of obstacles we face in everyday life. So there we go, now you know a little bit about chakras. Reiki is a practice that claims to clear blockages that are present in your chakras. There’s a whole world to reiki and other elements, but I’m not all that clued up on them yet! However, if I had a pound for every-time I just said chakras, I could afford every book on Amazon and would soon be a pro. When I arrived at Faye’s house, I automatically felt at ease. Going into new things alone can be intimidating but I was actually really excited to see what was in store. We made our way into her Reiki room that was laid out with different essential oil diffusers, gemstones, warm lighting and relaxing music. To begin with I laid on the bed and Faye
asked me what I’d been up to and if anything had been causing me any stress or anxiety.
I explained how recently I felt quite low on energy and tired. Faye then asked me a few wellness questions relating to physical and mental health. After the questions had been answered she explained about reiki and chakras, what the session would entail and then we got straight into it. To start, I was laid taking deep breaths helping to relax my body. At this point I realised two things: one just how hard it is to stop your mind from whirring and two how tense I usually am when I’m laid down. As I relaxed my muscles I became aware of how much tension I hold specifically in my legs and jaw. The reiki then began, with this kind of practice Faye doesn’t actually touch you for the most part. The only time she did was when focusing on my forehead area, she used her fingers and an amethyst crystal with essential oils.
Straight away I felt heat on the crown of my head as though someone was touching it. As I let my mind relax and slowly let go of any thoughts, I began to see the colour purple. Faye explained how this sometimes does happen during the practice, some people also see images. Though I had been told this before the session began, I didn’t expect it to happen to me.
I can't deny that I was shocked at first, it made me feel slightly panicky as I wasn’t sure what was actually going on. This is when I realised just how hard it is to turn off your thoughts. As the session went on I felt heat all over my body including on my arms and legs.
Once it was over Faye gently made me aware and gave me a glass of water. We spoke about what Faye found during the reiki and how I had some energy centres that were kind of in overdrive. The reading provided me with answers to many of my unknown groggy and unmotivated feelings. Before I left Faye also read my chakra cards and angel readings which further provided me with advice, reassurance and answers. Im now keeping a note of my feelings the next few days to see the way in which reiki impacted me.
I can safely say that straight away I felt more at ease , relaxed and ready to improve on my life. I definitely need to work on switching off my thoughts! Who knew it could be so hard to stop thinking? As a society we’re keen to spend money on beauty treatments such as eyelash extensions and hair and nail appointments. Though these kinds of treatments do definitely help with our confidence, we often tend to neglect the appointments that help with our inner wellness. If you’re interested in booking a session with Faye, and I highly recommend you do, then she is contactable on 07990 544143 or www.Facebook.com/ fayehealinghands/. Faye is also going to be at the Mind Body and Spirit Sheffield Fair on 30th September 2023 where she will be offering taster reiki sessions and wellness hampers. Why not treat yourself? It is National Wellness Month after all.

ST LUKES’S NEW SHOP OPENS ON THE MOOR SHEFFIELD
Written By Isabel Butler
Is this the start of She eld Town's new fashion world?
On Monday 7th August St Luke’s opened their new charity shop on e Moor in She eld Town Centre.
It’s safe to say it is de nitely the beginning of a new era for charity shops. St Luke’s e Moor describes itself as “eco-conscious” with a focus on fashion and unique looks provided by pre-loved clothing.
Recently we’ve seen a surge in the promotion of preloved clothes, one of the major movements being eBay teaming up with ITV’s Love Island with hopes to increase fashion sustainability. Social media also has a niche that’s recently come to life and is being carried by content creators who enjoy upcycling and thri ing.
Over time She eld’s high street fashion has without a doubt been on the downfall, with the loss of shops such as New Look, Next and Topshop. ere was always going to be a battle as soon as She eld’s wellknown shopping centre, Meadowhall, was born. e convenience of having everything in one place under one roof proves very popular in society, so it’s no wonder She eld Town Centre’s High Street shops faced neglect upon their opening.
But it’s never too late, with H&M and Primark bringing fashion to life on e Moor, all hope is not lost. And in a generation like today, style is not all that
matters. Fast fashion aws are being acknowledged and sustainability is on the rise. I visited St. Luke's new shop on Tuesday 8th August, just one day a er its opening. e shop was bursting with colourful pre-loved items and eager customers wanting to expand their wardrobes. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted with a bright stand full of pieces that embody this season's colours. Bright pink, neon greens and oranges as well as some more neutral tones for everyday wear. In each window was a di erent display creatively curated. Towards the back of the shop was a denim section where items such as shorts, dresses and overalls could be rehomed. Not only was the shop full of fashionable clothing nds, but there were also displays that held accessories tailored to di erent tastes. Earrings were hung on playing cards and necklaces were draped on the walls. As we ventured towards home decorations, we saw the huge wall of vinyl that sat at the le of the tills.
You could purchase work from artists such as Dua Lipa and Years and Years. Further on we’re several di erent home wear pieces including crockery sets and candle holders, vases, and mug sets. e shop overall seems a great success, fashionable and on-trend whilst being sustainable and upcycling pre-loved items. When you’re next in She eld make sure you call in! And if you nd that you have any free a ernoons, why not volunteer, and help She eld fashion come back to life?

THE GEMS BETWEEN THE VALLEY
Stocksbridge and Deepcar have seen many changes throughout their existence and have produced little gems.
Starting with the obvious one, Samuel Fox bought an old cotton mill and turned it into a steelworks from which they made wire and textile pins. At that point, the town of Stocksbridge was classed as a small settlement, Samuel Fox was believed to not only have brought industry to the town but it was also claimed he built up much of the town's infrastructure, most notably the train station.
Mr Fox was such an in uential person to the town’s identity that the new Fox Valley shopping centre was named a er the great man, the local football team, Stocksbridge Park Steels has a fox as their mascot in the man's honour.
Samuel Fox is also famous for manufacturing the Paragon Umbrella which was sold and distributed all over the world and the design is still being used and sold to this day.
England and Premier League striker, Jamie Vardy also played a part in the town's recent history as he came through the ranks, plying his trade at Stockbridge Park Steels. Vardy joined Park Steels in 2003 following his release from the Owls youth system and it wasn’t until 2007. He made his debut for the rst team. During his time at Park Steels, he scored 66 goals in 107 appearances between 2003 – 2010, before moving on to Halifax Town.
Since leaving the Valley his career skyrocketed, jumping up the pyramids at a tremendous pace and found himself in England’s top ight winning the Premier League title with the Foxes, Leicester City. Park Steels has never forgotten his contributions to the club and named their main stand. ‘ e Jamie Vardy Stand.’
But the town isn’t just famous for sport and steel, it also has produced musical talent in the form of Arctic Monkey’s frontman Alex Turner who went to School in Stocksbridge. e band were famous for introducing the world to the local dialect and phrases through their indie rock songs.
WHAT IS A TARA?
TARA is a Tenants and Residents Association and has over 40 TARA’s across the city each within their own geographical area and solely run by volunteers.
e aim of TARAs is to represent the interests of their members and bene t the community in educational, social, and recreational activities for all ages. TARA is funded by council tenants who pay a 10 pence levy on their weekly rent and automatically become members of their local TARA, they also receive money from those who are not council tenants but wish to be a part of their local TARA who pay an annual fee of £5.
TARA in Stocksbridge are in the midst of setting up some more meetings and activities for members to join such as Co ee Morning in the Library, Football camp with
Stocksbridge Park Steels and with the help of three volunteers a mommy and me class could potentially be on the horizon.
All TARAs are required to send out at least one newsletter per year, but with the postage and the aim of preserving our trees, many TARAs have chosen to switch to an email-based system so, if you are a levy payer or a homeowner who wishes to join your local TARA and live within Stocksbridge, Bolsterstone, Wharncli e Side, Deepcar, Oughtibridge or Worrell you can add yourself on to their newsletter and joining in with all these amazing activities then just contact them by email or phone which is displayed in their advert adjacent.

With the most famous song being ‘Mardy Bum’ other songs include the di erent places around the city, depicting scenarios that many of us can relate to growing up and or going out for drinks in the city centre with our mates. It brought a real insight into the culture of the city and its people and will forever be celebrated for it.
Deepcar doesn’t have many claims to fame but what it does have is a sight which is claimed to date all the way back to the Meso-
lithic, also known as the middle stone age. is archaeological site is well known all over the world as being a rare example of early man as campsites were discovered along with ints (tools) that were used by the hunter-gathers. Both of these towns have produced many gems and with the many diverse and creative people, it won't be too long before the next one appears.

Church continue unbeaten start
Penistone Church extended their unbeaten start to the season to five games following their recent home win over Eccleshill United.
Following the late equaliser in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, Penistone finally received recompense in the return fixture at the Church Yard, dispatching City of Liverpool with ease as they booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup. Goals from Leon Hurles-Brooke – brace and Anthony Brown secured a 3-1 win in the mid-week replay. And Penistone Church continued in this rich vein of form when they hosted Eccleshill United on Saturday in their third league game of the new campaign. Even though Penistone saw themselves as fortunate to have led at halftime, a great cross from Nathan Keightley saw Keiran Ryan break off his man to stab home the opening and only goal of the first period.
The second half was similar to the first as Penistone struggled to get any real impotence into the game, but they managed to break down the defences of the visitors and it wasn’t too long before Ryan
bagged himself a brace as the home side ran out 2-0 winners. Following the result, the CoManager of Penistone, John Whitehead said, “We remain unbeaten and sit just three points behind the league leaders. We managed to keep a clean sheet and score another two goals, even though we are disappointed with our own performance because we know the standards that we have set ourselves and it felt like we weren’t really at the races today, but you have to take the positives from today and on to the next one.”
Following this win Penistone find themselves just three points from top of the league due to the league leaders playing one more game than the rest, firmly remaining in the playoff spots and seem to be well on course to fulfil their season objective.
Penistone Church host Manchester-based, Prestwich Heys in the next round of the FA Cup Preliminary Round, Saturday the 19th of August - kicking off at 3pm.

Leicester reduced the gap back down to four with their first heat advantage of the night in Heat Eight.
But the Tigers delivered a deadly response as they seized full control of the fixture. A straight hat-trick of 5-1s brought the house down - particularly in Heat 11 with a perfect example of team riding as Kerr and Woffinden successfully kept a hard-charging Fricke at bay in one of the heats of the season.

being spooned behind the goal. Jack Watson thought quickly to rush onto a lazy pass to the goalkeeper but a slight de ection was enough to make sure it went wide of the goal.
Stocksbridge Park Steels were denied an opening day win by a late goal from Stockton Town. It couldn’t have started better for the Steels. A corner was swung in by Tomas Poole and Charlie Oglesby le his marker to head in and give Stocksbridge the lead. Stockton did have the ideal moment to equalise just a few minutes later though. Ross Goodwin was penalised for a sliding tackle
But just as they started the rst half well, Stocksbridge started the second half in the best way possible. Great play found Jack Tinker on the overlap down the le -hand side and he put in a rst-time cross. Rawson was there on the near post and nished it o , giving Stocksbridge the lead again.
Stocksbridge had their chances to extend the lead. Good play found Tomas Poole in the box but he choose to shoot rather than square the ball and it ended up
And just like in the rst half, Stockton equalised on the turn of the 90th minute. A rare mistake from Mitch Langton allowed Michael Fowler to burst through on goal and he nished with plenty of power to make it 2-2. Stockton did all they could to get the last-minute winner. However, Townsend made a series of impressive saves to prevent the Anchors from doing that. It meant no massive gut punch for the Steels and that they’d return to South Yorkshire with a point.
Next up for Park Steels will be a break from league action as they host Cleethorpes Town in the FA Cup Preliminary Round at Bracken Moor kick o at 3pm.
