CARNIVAL FACES CLOSURE Stannington Carnival Faces Closure Unless New Leadership Emerges

The future of Stannington Carnival hangs in the balance as the Stannington Carnival Organisers and Festival Friends (SCOFF) announce an Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for Monday, January 29th, at Stannington Library on Uppergate Road. The meeting, set to begin at 7:00 pm, is a crucial juncture for the beloved community event, as the current committee contemplates winding up operations due to key members stepping down from their roles. The positions up for grabs include the chair, treasurer, secretary, volunteer co-ordinator, health & safety officer, and carnival stalls organiser, leaving the committee unable to function effectively without suitable replacements. The current committee, in place since late 2017, successfully organised full carnivals in 2018 and 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the event in 2020. In 2021, the committee produced "Celebrating Stannington," a book highlighting the carnival's history and the significant contributions of the late Jackie Baines. Financial support from Bradfield Parish Council and local traders allowed the book to be a tribute to the community while raising funds for local causes. In the subsequent years, the committee shifted gears to host the Stannington Garden Party in 2022 and 2023, proving re-

silient despite challenges like adverse weather conditions in the previous year. Jenny van Tinteren, the current chair of SCOFF and a Stannington local, expressed her sentiments about the situation, stating, “Stannington Carnival has existed in some form since 1991, and I am proud to have been involved for six of those years. But the time has come for me to step aside and, I hope, let someone else take over. I know that several other committee members are of the same mind.” Van Tinteren stressed the importance of the carnival as a family event and a significant opportunity for local traders, emphasising the positive impact it has on raising funds for good causes. She urged interested individuals to attend the AGM and consider joining SCOFF to shape the future of the Stannington Carnival. The AGM on Monday, January 29th, represents a critical moment for the carnival's survival, and all local residents with an interest in contributing to the event are invited to attend the meeting at Stannington Library at 7:00 pm. The fate of Stannington Carnival now rests on the shoulders of the community, and the search for a new team to take on the management and ensure the event's continuity is underway.

Catherine will feel the cold with her St Luke’s fundraiser St Luke’s Hospice supporter Catherine Wilson is bracing herself for a chilly end to winter after deciding to take the shortcut to fundraising success. Catherine is already a keen volunteer at the St Luke’s Hillsborough shop near her home. But on February 29, she’ll be taking that support one stage further when she has her head completely shaved, with the aim of raising at least £500 for St Luke’s patient services. Carrying out the severest of trims will be the team at Hillsborough salon Posh FX Hair and Beauty. “St Luke’s has helped me a lot so I thought it would be a good idea to give something back,” said Catherine, who has already raised more than £250 via her Justgiving page before the cutting even begins.

“Volunteering at the Hillsborough shop helped with building my confidence when I needed that most. “By the time I have it done we’ll be getting into the warmer season – and my mum has suggested she could knit me a hat.” To support Catherine’s St Luke’s head shave visit justgiving.com/page/catherine-wilson-1702765292056 BAG A BARGAIN WITH £1 TUESDAY AT ST LUKE’S HILLSBOROUGH SHOP Looking for a bargain? FUNDRAISER FOR RESCUE TEAM Earlier this week, the camaraderie of the community was on full display as two team members of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team joined forces with the biking enthusiasts of Valley MTB for a fundraising event.

A generous gesture from the pub came in the form of a fully loaded donation tub, containing a noteworthy £73. The unexpected contribution added to the growing support for The Woodhead MRT.

The Valley MTB bikers, in their annual sponsored Christmas jumper bike ride, pedalled their way to success by raising an impressive sum of over £500 for the group of volunteers.

Expressing gratitude, The Woodhead MRT extends a big congratulations to all the participants of the sponsored bike ride organised by Valley MTB. The enthusiasm and dedication displayed by the bikers not only made the event a success but also contributed significantly to the financial support for The Woodhead MRT.

The festive atmosphere continued to unfold on the same evening when team members received a pleasant surprise at the Friendship Hotel pub.

Equally deserving of appreciation are the individuals who opened their wallets, contributing to both Valley MTB's fundraising efforts and the donation tub at the Friendship Hotel pub. These acts of kindness exemplify the spirit of community support. The Woodhead MRT takes this opportunity to convey a heartfelt thank you to all participants, donors, Valley MTB, and the Friendship Hotel pub. The collective effort and generosity displayed will undoubtedly have a positive impact on The Woodhead MRT's ability to carry out its invaluable duties.

LOCAL GROUPS URGED TO APPLY FOR FUNDING Penistone Round Table is encouraging local community groups and charities with specific funding needs to apply to it for a donation.

The group has raised money by putting on community events throughout the year, including Penistone Bonfire, Penistone Halloween and Santa’s Sleigh around Penistone, Silkstone, Dodworth and surrounding villages. All the money they raise is donated out to charities and local good causes. Not-for-profit organisations can apply to Penistone Round Table throughout the year for a specific donation to benefit their local community. The next round of donations are being made in early February. Typical amounts donated range from a few pounds to up to £1,000, although applications received before the end of January may be able to access a single donation of up to £5,000 which has been made available through a national Round Table fund.

“We’re really keen to support local not-for-profit groups who need specific items or particular support – especially where they benefit the local community who donated to our fund-raisers,” explained Jon Gilbert from Penistone Round Table. “It’s brilliant to be able to offer that support for specific projects which make a real difference in those communities.” Penistone Round Table is looking for applications from groups who benefit the communities of Penistone, Thurlstone, Millhouse Green, Crow Edge, Ingbirchworth, Hoylandswaine, Oxspring, Green Moor, Thurgoland, Silkstone, Silkstone Common and Dodworth. The status of a monument dedicated to an aristocrat who saved many lives by introducing smallpox inoculation in Britain has been given an upgrade, writes Hayley Coyle for BBC News. The obelisk at Wentworth Castle Gardens, near Barnsley, recognises Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's contribution to tackling the deadly disease. The monument's listing has been increased from Grade II to Grade II*.

The new listing status has elevated the tribute, known as the Sun Monument, to among the top 10% of England's most important historic sites, the organisation said. Lady Montagu tested the inoculation on her own daughter and her work in the 1720s paved the way for Edward Jenner to develop a vaccine for the disease. Ms Charlesworth said: "By introducing inoculation to Britain and championing the practice, she helped to save many lives three quarters of a century before Edward Jenner first tested his smallpox vaccine." Lady Montagu married Edward Wortley Montagu in 1712 and four years later they moved to Turkey, where she observed local

This involved scratching the skin and introducing a small amount of the virus taken from the pus of someone with a mild form of the disease. This, in turn, then provoked a mild form of smallpox which left a lasting immunity. It is estimated that smallpox caused 60 million deaths between 1700 and 1800. After she returned to London in 1721 Lady Montagu inoculated her son and daughter and used their immunity to promote the method, which then gained popularity. The obelisk is believed to have been erected by William Wentworth, second Earl of Strafford, who had met Lady Montagu in Italy as a young man. The monument's higher listing status was granted by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport on the advice of Historic England. Torri Crapper, general manager for the National Trust at Wentworth Castle Garden said the team was "delighted that the Sun Monument had received this recognition". She said Lady Montagu's story was "such an important part of history that deserves to be told".

Local News An Apology The Venue Staff would like to offer a sincere apology for the late cancellation of January's Car Boot Sale. We did not return to work until Tuesday 2nd January so didn't cancel until the Friday morning. We sent a message but did not speak individually to the stallholders and we are aware that many turned up on the morning of 6th.. By way of recompense we would like to offer all 9 people who had booked, a free table for Saturday 17th Feb. We apologise to all concerned. In future we've agreed to make a decision the Monday before the Sale, if bookings are low, and let all stallholders know then. Barbara Horsman - on behalf of STEP

Community Forum Stocksbridge Community Forum is meeting at the Venue at 6pm (please note the earlier time) on Wednesday 31st January. We intend to discuss: 1. Stocksbridge Town Plan 2. Nuisance and crime and 3. Footpaths and trails plus whatever else locals want to raise. This meeting offers all residents and groups a public platform to advertise any new project or venture and all are welcome. And if you’re fairly new to the area this is a good place to come and find out what’s important locally.

LEAVE IT ALONE

Barbara Horsman

After 20+ years on project engineering, I know that after everyone thinks it’s all over there’s a periodic final stage in any project revue. On 1st April next we reach the half centenary of a mammoth project. The local government reform of 1974, with boundaries moved miles & authorities like Stocksbridge Urban & Wortley Rural District Councils absorbed by the big neighbour next door, has never been even glanced at. There are those emotive types who’ll refer to “the great ‘74 land grab” or “the catastrophe”. I have a more balanced view. No sane person would advocate a return to watching, as my 11 year old self did, a West Riding County Constabulary car in a hot pursuit stop dead & let his quarry go, on seeing the City of Sheffield sign in front of him. I do, however, sympathise with the view that we were absorbed by a City Council that had no understanding of how a rural or semi-rural community works & cared even less - we weren’t their core urban vote! And let’s be blunt, the lack of political & PR “nous” coming from SCC, commencing with the Leisure Centre saga, has been stunning. I’ve been amazed to hear people who weren’t even born in 1974 saying that we should have gone into Barnsley, like Penistone.

Rwanda Bill So Miriam Cates considers Rwanda “a safe country”? No doubt she is happy to overlook the inconvenient fact that Rwanda’s human rights records is poor. Free speech, and any dissent to the government are heavily supressed. War with the Democratic Republic of Congo is also increasingly likely. Those who take the desperate act of fleeing oppression and persecution at the risk of their own lives deserve far better than being treated as inconvenient human waste fit only to be removed to a handy dumping ground. We should by now be unsurprised by Ms Cates’ manifest lack of empathy & concern for the oppressed, both in the UK & internationally. Charity begins at home...or not, in our illustrious MP’s case. Still, at least this year her electorate have the chance to express their opinion of her record. E Lucas

Stagecoach - The tracker and the 57 I’ve been interested by the ongoing correspondence regarding Stagecoach’s performance on the 57 & 57A. Let me split my contribution into three sections. Firstly, the Stagecoach tracker. There seem to be not local but national problems with it. While waiting for a Stagecoach Midland X47 from Rushden (Northants) back to Wellingborough the tracker told me that it was still seven minutes away. Luckily, while I was reading my phone my partner was watching the road & the bus bowling towards us (!) & had her hand out to stop it. Back home, I waited for a 57 at Millennium Green & the interactive map seemed to show it coming up the River Don!

This is not just an Upper Don Valley or even a South Yorkshire problem. When I’m “over the hill”, where the Woodhead electric trains still run, lorries & coaches pass me with signwriting proudly proclaiming that they’re from “Hyde - Cheshire”. Tameside who on earth are they?! In the pub, I hear the familiar line, slightly modified. “It’s all about [delete Sheffield, insert Ashton}”.

Second, & I know that others have spotted this, at times the number of Stagecoach Yorkshire’s Ecclesfield fleet disabled at the roadside with the hazard lights flashing is conspicuous. While Halfway has a shiny new fleet arriving it seems that Ecclesfield’s customers must make do with tired vehicles. I recently come home on a bus I rode in Greater Manchester about 12 years ago, nostalgically reading the GM posters complete with Hyde Road phone number. I’m sure a few locals around here will have read the £25 Penalty Fare sign with some trepidation!

50 years is more than late, but the whole restructuring project is long overdue for reviewing by someone totally disinterested & with no emotive views. Look at how it’s functioned from ‘74 until now, then sort into 3 virtual piles of paper: -

Finally, & why this has never been publicised is a mystery, there is the way a 57/57A from Stocksbridge gets to Moorfoot, becomes a 2 & goes to Barnsley Interchange. With the old hourly 57 it was quite straightforward every bus. Indeed, having shopped at Hoy-

the school. Now four remaining projects, all well-supported in consultation, namely the Hydrotherapy Pool for the Leisure Centre, restoration of the Little Don River, upgrading of Stocksbridge Sports Club pitches and the Trails/Active Travel Project are all apparently unceremoniously abandoned, leaving partners and stakeholders of these projects largely in the dark, locked out of any useful explanation or information which would allow them to seek alternative funding or propose cost savings.

People might not understand these things, Of course the state of the historic shopping but they’ll understand a hell of a lot better if centre is one of the most visible symptoms they’re given the information! of Stocksbridge’s problems. Thomas Douglas Peck (back) and his parents A pioneering project to preserve and celebrate the social history of Sheffield’s S6 area reaches its first big milestone later this month. The Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group – which was awarded a grant of £40,180 from the Heritage Fund last summer – are launching ‘Growing Up In 1930s’ Hillsborough’ at Weston Park Museum at the end of the month. The book, which is the autobiography of former Hillsborough resident Thomas Douglas Peck, chronicles life in the popular suburb through the Great Depression of the 1930s and throughout World War Two. The free event opens to the public from 1.30 pm on Wednesday, January 31st, at

Thomas Douglas Peck.

Weston Park Museum with the official launch being performed by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Colin Ross.

The two-year heritage project was originally inspired following the chance discovery of four cinefilms.

The book will be on sale for a suggested donation of £5.

The films provide a fascinating glimpse into life in the interwar and post-war period and will also be screened at the launch.

Refreshments will be provided. A braille and audio version of the book have also been created. The Lord Mayor will be presenting these to Sheffield Society for the Blind earlier in the day. Jenny Morton, chair of the group, said: “We are thrilled to launching our first book later this month. ‘Growing Up In 1930s’ Hillsborough’ truly brings this period back to life and it’s privilege to be preserving our history for future generations.”

The Hillsborough and Owlerton History Group are now working on a second book of stories from recent history in the area. More information about the launch and group can be found at www.hillsboroughhistory.co.uk

Woman completes Gruelling Winter Race A dedicated individual has raised £10,000 after they took on the formidable challenge of the Winter Spine Race, considered Britain's most brutal endurance race. The money will be used to send women from disadvantaged backgrounds to University. The race spanned a non-stop, 268-mile journey along the challenging terrain of the Pennine Way, starting from Edale and concluding in the village of Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. Jennie, a Student Support Manager at the University of Sheffield faced a strict time limit of 168 hours to conquer the unforgiving landscapes, including the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall, and the Cheviots. Enduring ⅔ of the race in darkness, battling sleep deprivation, and braving the harsh winter weather, the athlete showcased exceptional physical resilience and mental fortitude. The excitement of taking on such an incredible challenge and the prospect

of pushing personal limits fueled the participant's determination throughout the race. As part of this monumental endeavour, Jennie embarked on a fundraising mission to support three fully funded scholarships at the University of Sheffield for women from disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative aimed to address the financial challenges faced by students striving to pursue full-time degrees. In the role of Student Support Manager at the University, the participant had witnessed firsthand the struggles of students managing work, long commutes, and sacrificing social and sporting activities due to the cost of living crisis. The scholarships, designed to make a lasting impact on the lives of bright students from lowincome households, could mean the difference between attending university or not. With the support of the University and the community, the athlete believed in the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these students.

Reflecting on the journey, Jennie expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming love, support, and donations received throughout the week. Completing the race was acknowledged as a collective effort, and the athlete emphasised the importance of reaching the fundraising target to truly make a lasting impact on students' lives. Despite securing the medal and enduring sore feet, the focus remained on the ongoing mission to gather additional support and donations to reach the fundraising goal. The athlete encouraged everyone to share her story and contribute to changing one more life through the transformative power of education. FOUNDATION SUPPORTS CHARITY Sheffield-based charity, The Ethel Trust, is the latest cause to receive a £2,345 boost from a group of charity cyclists from Dransfield Properties.

During 2023 the Trust doubled their capacity to meet growing demand by commissioning a second community barge and increasing its team of volunteers.

Team Dransfield raised an amazing £47,000 after completing the final leg of a 14-year Tour of Europe in 2022. Funds have been used by the Dransfield Foundation to support a number of projects focused on helping children and their families in the local community.

Charity trustee, David Tuck, said: “We’re enormously grateful for the support the Dransfield Foundation has shown our project over the years. We rely entirely on donations and grants to carry out our work.

The Ethel Trust, which was formed in 1988, operates two community barges providing day and residential canal and river experiences for the most disadvantaged groups in South Yorkshire. Members of the community benefiting from the initiative range from primary aged children with learning and physical disabilities, through to young people with mental health issues, elderly groups in residential care and those at risk of social exclusion.

The team of cyclists covered more than 5,000 miles across 14 countries covering punishing routes through Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Portofino, Rome, Dubrovnik, Trieste, Munich, Berlin, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stavanger, Aberdeen, Newcastle and back to London raising an incredible £593,000. BOYHOOD Sheffield fan Damien Bates has described the club’s 2023 Premiership glory as his best achievement yet - but now he wants to repeat that feat this term.

And whilst admitting the sport can have its testing moments, Bates says his high level of enthusiasm still heavily remains.

Stocksbridge Park Steels have completed the signing of Harry Garman from Brighouse Town, Sam Green from Aberystwyth Town and Dan Nelson (pictured) from the reserves. Garman, a goalkeeper, signed for Brighouse Town in August 2023 from Yorkshire Amateur League side Alwoodley FC. He also works as a goalkeeping coach, including for Guiseley’s academy. He made 13 appearances

for Brighouse before making the move to the Steels. The next player to sign for Stocksbridge is Green, another goalkeeper. He came through the Lincoln City but most recently he has been at Aberystwyth Town in the Welsh Premier League. He has been playing for the Reserves recently but will also add goalkeeping competition for the first team.

er to register with the first team. Nelson was a key defender in the invincible U18s season last year and has since made the step up to the reserves with ease. He joins Ollie Nowak and Kyle Justin in registering for the first team. Next Home Game: Saturday 27 January, vs Carlton Town, 3pm KO

Finally, Dan Nelson has become the latest reserves play-

Weather the winner again Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby suffered their 6th weather-related postponement of the season when their away fixture against Leeds Modernians fell foul of the recent storms & rain. Another date will now have to be agreed upon as Stocksbridge will face a busy end-of-season schedule to fit all their fixtures in. A frustrated Stocksbridge Captain, that man Adam Frith commented, ‘it’s very disappointing, but I guess it can’t be helped,‘ before adding ‘The boys continue to train well, so we really need some competitive action soon!’

Stocksbridge will hope the weather treats them a little better at the weekend as they prepare to travel to the East Coast to face winless Hornsea RUFC, where Stocksbridge will be looking for a victory to cement further their lofty 3rd spot in the Counties 4 Yorkshire (Phase 2) South league ladder. The next home fixture is the clash with Knottingley RUFC at the Coal Pit Lane stadium on Saturday 3rd February, with a kick off time of 2.15pm.

The Tru7 Group Tigers will now host Oxford at Owlerton on Thursday, March 28 (7.30) - seven days later than first planned. It means they will now launch their Premiership campaign away to the Spires, with their clash at Sandy Lane bought forward a week to Thursday, March 21. The Tigers also head to Birmingham on Monday, March 25. A reminder that there is action at Owlerton on Thursday, March 14 (7.30) however as club captain Kyle Howarth stages his testimonial.

BRONZE FOR DAWN AT BRASS MONKEY www.looklocal.org.uk

Five Penistone runners made the trip north to compete in the popular Brass Monkey Half Marathon near York. The race has a reputation for being flat and fast leading to personal bests for the distance. There was a record turnout of numbers for the race and the weather was perfect for running. First runner back for Penistone was Andrew Pearson who continues his comeback after a period away from running due to injury. Andrew placed tenth in the men’s over55 age category in a time of 1-24-59. Next back was Dawn Broom who had an excellent run to place third in the ladies over55 age category in 1-36-42. Close behind Dawn was Suzanne McGill whose time of 1-37-42 was enough to reward her with a new club record for the ladies over45 category. Also in North Yorkshire, Steve Sanders took part in the Commondale Clart Fell Race. This challenging but scenic route is just over five miles in distance and involves 722 feet of climbing. Steve had a strong run to finish 22nd in a field of over 150 runners. His time was 37-46. On the parkrun scene, there was a first place for Flynn Rogers at Hillsborough junior parkrun and a second place for Ashley Firth at Temple Newsam.

Aspiring footballer gains international call-up A college student has been called up to represent his country. Barnsley Sixth Form College student Brandon Schofield has secured a place in the English Colleges Football Association national squad. Brandon, a centre-back who plays for Denaby Main Football Club, Penistone Church Football Club and Barnsley Sports Academy, will train at St George's Park, the English Football Association's National Football Centre and will have the opportunity to gain experience of playing at a higher level by representing the College in nationally recognised competitions. A former Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday academy player, Brandon dedicated himself to football, which he took up at the age of 4 after initially playing in his garden with his dad. The Business, Economics and Physical Education A Level student, said: “To be selected for the English Colleges Football Association national squad means a lot to me. As an ex-Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday academy player, I have felt at times that I’ve let myself and those family and friends who believed in me down, but now this opportunity has arose I feel like it’s my chance to prove myself again.

“My next step in football is to strive towards playing semi-professional or professional football and to constantly work hard even when hurdles may be thrown in my way. The Barnsley Sports Academy has significantly helped me so far, by offering excellent, varied training sessions and I’ve found it lots of fun as well.” Luke Forgione, Sports Performance and Athlete Development Co-ordinator at Barnsley College, added: “It is fantastic to have Brandon selected for the England Colleges team. Brandon is the sixth player in the last six years to be selected for the team, this illustrates the calibre of players we have at the College. We are extremely proud of Brandon, who continuously performs at a high level in our Male Football Academy and has been rewarded for his efforts with the International call up. Playing for your country at any level is a superb achievement.” For more information about the range of A Level courses available at Barnsley Sixth Form College, visit www.barnsleysixthformcollege.co.uk, email info@barnsley. ac.uk or call 01226 216 123. Alternatively, attend the Barnsley Sixth Form College on Saturday 3 February, 10.00am to 1.00pm. Visit www.barnsley.ac.uk/events for further details.
