HAPPY HANDS TURNS 25

A nursery in North She eld is celebrating its 25th birthday.

Happy Hands celebrated its Quarter Century Anniversary on Friday, the 19th of July 2024.

e nursery situated next to St. Ann’s Primary School was rst opened in 1999 by Ellen Baker, who was then the Headteacher of the primary school, in the hope of boosting their numbers. Although a lot has changed over the years, such as redevelopment and sta , Happy Hands has received an Outstanding rating in their previous three Ofsted reports.

“It’s great to see what a success it has become. Looking around and seeing all the Happy Hands dotted around the place, and seeing the number of children here, it’s clear what a success it has been,” Ellen Baker said.

All the parents, sta , and of course the children were invited to share in this momentous occasion. Cakes and so drinks were served, along with co ee for the adults, while a local band ser-

enaded all the guests as they came and went throughout the a ernoon.

Angela Mo at currently runs Happy Hands and has been here from the very rst day. She, along with the nursery, is still going strong 25 years later.

“Every day is a di erent day. Every day the children inspire me to do something di erent, and so do the parents. All the children that come through the doors each and every day are amazing and so understanding of other children as well. I am lucky to be a part of this for so long, and I just want to say thank you to all the parents who have brought their children to Happy Hands, as well as their talents and skills. ey’ve been amazing,” Angela explained.

From a small nursery with fewer than 20 pupils at the start of its life, Happy Hands has become a beloved part of the community as it continues to grow and develop the young minds of the future.

It’s not di cult to see why Ofsted rates this nursery so highly. 25 years old and going strong, Happy Hands is a nursery by the community, for the community.

‘BINS’ TO GO ON STRIKE

Nearly 100 refuse workers in She eld are to take strike action this month bringing the city’s refuse collections to a standstill, Unite the union announced.

Workers employed by outsourcing company Veolia and working out of the Lumley Street depot are furious that their employer is refusing to allow collective bargaining agreements with Unite despite the membership of the union representing around 80 per cent of the depot’s workforce.

Drivers and loaders are walking out on 29 July to 2 August a er Veolia refused to recognise Unite’s for collective bargaining. Veolia claims another union is already recognised as the sole trade union, yet it doesn’t represent the vast majority of the workforce.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “It is absurd that a union representing 80 per cent of a workforce is blocked from making collective bargaining arrangements by an em-

ployer, especially one it has national agreements with up and down the country.

“Our members are rightly angry at such game-playing and having exhausted all negotiations are taking to the picket line to state their case. Unite will be backing them one hundred per cent of the way.”

Adding to the workers’ anger is that Unite has a national bargaining agreement with Veolia across numerous depots all over the UK. Without an agreement in place Unite cannot negotiate on behalf of the workforce over issues like pay, condition and safety on site.

Unite regional o cer Shane Sweeting added: “Strike action will inevitably result in rubbish piling up across She eld. Veolia needs to understand the depth of anger among our members and urgently come back to the negotiating table prepared to accept that Unite is the union it needs to formally recognise.”

Aldi Triumphs in Food Hygiene Face-Off:

M&S Left Crawling in Caterpillar Cake Sequel

In a surprising twist that rivals the drama of the infamous caterpillar cake wars, Aldi has emerged victorious in a high-stakes food hygiene showdown with Marks & Spencer. Food Guard, a leading food safety consultancy, today released an analysis of food hygiene ratings for both retailers, revealing a stark contrast in their performance.

Key Findings:

Aldi: 98.2% of stores rated 'Pass' (211 out of 215)

Marks & Spencer: 89.8% of stores rated 'Pass' (516 out of 575)

Total stores analysed: 790

Louis Ryan, Food Guard's Food Safety Expert, states, "Just as Colin and Cuthbert made peace in the cake aisle, we expected to see harmony in hygiene standards. Instead, we're witnessing a new battle where Aldi is leaving M&S in the dust."

e data shows that while both retailers maintain high standards overall, Aldi has taken a clear lead:

Aldi has only 4 stores rated below 'Pass' M&S has 59 stores falling short of the top rating Ryan adds, " is is the food retail equivalent of a caterpillar becoming a

butter y. Aldi, o en perceived as a budget option, is showcasing premiumlevel hygiene standards. M&S, traditionally associated with quality, seems to be struggling to keep pace."

e stark di erence in performance raises questions about the relationship between price point and food safety standards. Aldi's success challenges the notion that higher prices automatically equate to better practices.

"We're seeing a revolution in the food retail sector," Ryan comments. "Aldi isn't just competing on price anymore; they're setting the bar for

food safety. M&S needs to up its game if it wants to maintain its reputation for quality."

is data comes at a crucial time for both retailers. As consumers become increasingly aware of food hygiene ratings, these results could significantly impact shopping habits and brand loyalty.

Food Guard calls on M&S to review and improve its food safety practices across its store network. Meanwhile, Aldi is encouraged to maintain its high standards and share best practices with the industry.

A RUN FOR MENTAL HEALTH

The Great North Run is fast approaching, and this will be the third time 51 year old Victoria will undertake the iconic 13.1 miles.

As well as being a personal challenge, it serves as an opportunity for her to raise awareness and financial support for different charities.

Victoria from Stocksbridge and a member of the Stocksbridge Running club started running about 3 years ago, helping with her mental health.

It is one of the reasons she has chosen a mental health charity this year. ANDYSMANCLUB. This charity is a male suicicide prevention charity. Suicide is the biggest killer of men in the UK, in 2021 3852 men died by suicide.

This is an amazing charity that offers peer support groups, raises awareness and aims to end the stigma around men`s mental health.

If your interested in helping Victoria raise funds for ANDYSMANCLUB so they can provide vital support to more men please visit her fundraising page https:// www.justgiving.com/page/ runvicrun

New charity dept. store to open this autumn

St Luke’s Hospice is set to launch its most ambitious retail project to date…the city’s first charity department store!

Last summer saw the opening of the hugely successful St Luke’s city centre store on The Moor, bringing the total number of St Luke’s shops throughout the city to 14, extending from Stocksbridge in the north to Crystal Peaks in the south.

Now the charity is proud to unveil plans for an 8,500 sq ft department store at the Kilner Way Retail Park in Wadsley Bridge.

Opening this autumn, the shop will offer a wide variety of preloved goods for the cost-conscious

sustainable shopper, creating a goto destination for everything preloved.

The site also offers visitors three hours of free parking and is wellserved by public transport links.

With an extra 7,000 sq ft of warehouse space to the rear of the store, the new shop will also provide a donation hub for items to be dropped off by supporters quickly and conveniently.

“St Luke’s Kilner Way will be our largest store, meeting public demand for cost-conscious shopping and the rise for high-quality pre-loved products,” said St Luke’s Commercial Director Kathryn Burkitt.

CYCLE ROUTE UNVEILED

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has unveiled a new 250km bike route, South Yorkshire by Bike, spanning the region and connecting Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, and Sheffield. Designed to promote cycling, the route includes several familyfriendly sections for easy exploration.

Launched at the Sheffield Grand Prix on July 17 by Coppard and Triple Olympic Champion Ed Clancy, the route was completed over three days by Clancy and cycling influencer Emily Chappell from July 19 to 21. The route, starting at Rotherham Central, loops through cities, towns, parks, and waterways, highlighting South Yorkshire’s scenic and historical landmarks.

Family-friendly sections feature rides at Rother Valley Country Park, Thurcroft Old Mineral Line,

Five Weirs Walk, and Blackburn Valley Trail. Coppard expressed pride in the region’s offerings, emphasizing the route’s role in encouraging cycling for all ages to improve health and wellbeing. He aims to make South Yorkshire a place where everyone can travel differently and enjoy its cultural and natural heritage.

Clancy, South Yorkshire’s Active Travel Commissioner, highlighted the mission to foster a cycling-friendly environment and inspire more people to cycle. He praised Emily Chappell for designing the route and volunteers for their efforts in promoting walking and cycling in communities.

The complete route and family-friendly sections are available at www.southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk/sybb.

A REYT GOOD NIGHT

Tigers close the gap

Birmingham 43-47 Sheffield Tigers

SHEFFIELD closed the gap on league leaders Ipswich with a battling 47-43 win at Birmingham on Monday.

It ended a four match losing streak on the road for the Tru7 Group Tigers who held their nerve in a last heat decider to head back to South Yorkshire with two vital ROWE Motor Oil Premiership points in the bag.

It was the hosts who started stronger with Freddie Lindgren and Michael Palm Toft outgating Jack Holder and Kyle Howarth for an opening 5-1.

Jason Edwards led a 4-2 for the Tigers in Heat Two as he got the better of Leon Flint with Dan Gilkes taking third ahead of Brummies’ guest Paco Castagna who was handed a 15-metre handicap penalty for touching the tapes in the initial staging.

The hosts restored their four point lead in Heat Three before guest Max Fricke led two 4-2s, one with Gilkes and one with Edwards to help bring the Tigers back level by the end of Heat Six.

Chris Holder led a 3-3 in the seventh before the Tigers took the lead for the first time in Heat Eight when Gilkes got his nose out in front whilst Howarth forced his way past Flint into second for a big 5-1.

A hat-trick of 3-3s followed before the final lap of Heat 12, arguably, swung the momentum in the Tigers’ favour. Wiktor Lampart looked on course to record his third win of the night for the hosts, but Chris Holder lifted

out of bend two before fairly coming up the inside, that appeared to unsettle the Pole and Edwards was in the right place at the right time to snatch second on the run to the line.

Fricke and Jack Holder kept Tom Brennan at the back in Heat 13 but a tense finale was set up when Birmingham’s tactical substitute paid off in Heat 14 with Lindgren and guest Zach Cook getting a 5-1 to move back within four.

The hosts needed another maximum to force the Super Heat and whilst Cook gated and hit the front, Fricke and Jack Holder rode cleverly to ensure Lindgren remained behind them as the Tigers picked up another confidence boosting victory.

The fixtures continue to come thick and fast and the action returns to Owlerton this Thursday (July 25, 7.30pm) with Oxford the visitors.

ROWE MOTOR OIL PREMIERSHIP R2: BIRMINGHAM 43: Freddie Lindgren 13+1, Zach Cook 10, Wiktor Lampart 7, Tom Brennan 5+1, Michael Palm Toft 3+1, Paco Castagna 3+1, Leon Flint 2.

On Thursday, 11th July, John 'the man with a pram' Burkhill embarked on a walk from Sheffield to Stocksbridge to participate in an intimate 'Evening With' event. Guests at Ponti’s Italian Restuarant were treated to a prosecco reception, a two-course meal, and brownie bites.

One lucky attendee won a £50 Ponti's voucher in a quick-fire round of 'Head or Tails' before hearing John's incredible story firsthand.

Stefano Ispani, owner of Ponti's, travelled up from London, inspired by John's impressive fundraising achievements. He led the Q&A session where John shared how his fundraising journey began, recounted meetings with famous personalities, including the late Queen, whom he fondly described as 'a reyt nice lass'. Guests had the unique opportunity to pose for pictures with John and hold his Olympic Torch. The evening con-

cluded with John reading his Pride of Britain 'Sheffield Poem'.

The event was a great success, raising £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support, thanks to the generosity of the guests and a donation from Ponti's.

John expressed his enjoyment of the evening and announced he will be returning with a certificate to thank everyone. He encouraged people to look out for his green wig on his travels and to contribute to his fundraising efforts.

TENNIS COURTS OFFICIALLY

REOPENED FOLLOWING RENOVATIONS

Tennis courts in Ecclesfield Park have undergone extensive work to ensure viability for years to come, including resurfacing and repainting, the installation of new fencing and nets, and a new gate system.

Renovations were managed by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), and funded by the UK Government, LTA Tennis Foundation, Sheffield City Council and Courtside, as part of biggest ever investment in park tennis facilities across Britain, with millions being put towards transforming over 2000 courts.

Through the Parks Tennis Project, the LTA have already supported renovations of Hollinsend Park Tennis Courts, which were reopened at the end of last year.

In total, the nationwide programme has provided investment of over £100K into Sheffield sporting facilities.

Councillor Kurtis Crossland, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said:

“Sheffield has a proud heritage as the Outdoor City and as the City of Sport and our sport and leisure infrastructure – be it sports facilities, community hubs, parks and green spaces or walking and cycling routes – play a key part in this.

“The renovation of the tennis courts in both Hollinsend and Ecclesfield Park provide a major boost to our sporting facilities and I am delighted they have now reopened and are ready to use by the local community.”

This nationwide programme of investment is seeing thousands of existing park tennis courts brought back to life for the benefit of local communities, providing vital opportunities for children and adults alike to be more active.

As well as weekly free park tennis sessions, with equipment provided, the new courts will host Local Tennis Leagues, giving people the opportunity to get involved in friendly and social local competitions.

All courts will be available to book online. New booking systems and gate access technology means it is now easier to get on court by booking in advance to guarantee availability.

A court booking is £6 for an hour of play – these small fees will ensure that the courts are maintained at their new high standard for years to come.

The LTA, Sheffield City Council and Courtside will work together to ensure free park tennis sessions are available on the courts providing regular opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and play.

Community Development Worker

A new job is being advertised in Look Local this week by Brightholmlee Methodist Church. It is for a community development worker, to work with the residents of Brightholmlee and Wharncliffe Side, and the other community groups and local businesses. It’s purpose is to help foster the development of new community activity in the village.

The job is 15 hours a week for 3 years. The Church and the Development Association hope that these new activities will help to support the Community Centre and the Church, because these are important resources for the village.

Local people have recently created the Wharncliffe Side Development Association in partnership with the church, and this has already created a busy community café on Wednesdays, with over 50 people enjoying food, meeting friends and making new connections each week.

The Association is also working with elected members and council officers to develop some youth club activity in the village, and access to other youth work provision in Stocksbridge for young people from the village, and

improve the games facilities in Dragon Park. These conversations are proceeding and were reported at the meeting of the Association on Saturday.

The church will also be working with the Wharncliffe Side Players on plans for the church to improve the way it works for the Players and for other community activities. An architect has been appointed and ideas are being thought through.

In the short term the church has put in hand a new smooth ramp at the front of the building for prams and wheelchairs, new external lighting and improved lighting in the hall. More minor works and improvements are planned.

Rev Ian Lucraft, minister at the church, said: “The new café has been transformative, energising people and helping them to realise that they can make a difference. As a result of the café’s success, we’ve now worked together to set up a new Community Development Association, to help take other community projects forward, with over 40 people attending the first meeting. This job will take a lead in developing these initiatives.”

TEVENDALE’S 5 WICKET HAUL SEALS VICTORY

Frecheville 105 all out (J Tevendale 5-37)

Stocksbridge 1st XI 106-8 (A Hirst 44*)

The 1st XI made it 5 wins on the spin with a tense victory over fellow promotion chasers, Frecheville.

Bowling first, James Tevendale was the hero with the ball, picking up his 2nd consecutive 5 wicket haul! The visitors collapsed from 64-2 to 105 all out, thanks to Tevendale's superb spell. James was well supported by Callum Haywood in the middle overs, who continued his fine season with 2 more wickets. There was also a wicket each for Andy Hibbert and Jake Vickers, with the 1sts very happy to restrict the visitors to just 105.

The response with the bat got off to a less than ideal start, with 'Bridge quickly falling to 293. Andy Hirst looked in great touch and was looking to continue his fantastic form, however was struggling for partners! 29-3 shortly became 47-6, with the 1sts in danger of a collapse. Darren Goodson hit an important and destructive 19 to move 'Bridge closer to the finishing line, however at 81-8 it was certainly a nail-biter. Captain and vice, Vickers and Hirst saw the victory home in style for the 1sts, with Hirst yet again leading the way with the bat with a fantastic 44 not out, ably supported by Vickers who finished 16 not out. Sensational run of form for the 1st XI, which strengthens their position in the promotion spots.

Stocksbridge 2nd XI 120-8 (S Perry 50) Adwick-le-Street 123-1

Unfortunately, it was a resounding defeat for the 2nd XI this weekend. Travelling to Adwick, the 2nds batted first in warm conditions. Sadly, 3 of the top 4 batsmen didn't make it past 6, with Steve Perry doing the vast majority of the scoring. Steve led the way and after a bit of a scoring mix-up, did bring up his half century. Perry was supported by Liam Grayson (12) and Chris Thwaites (16), however 'Bridge were struggling to post a total of note. Following Perry Snr's dismissal, it was his son, Tom who took on the impetuous. Tom blasted a quick 20 not out, including a couple of cracking boundaries. However, a total of 120 was below par considering conditions.

In the field, Stocksbridge tried their best, however weren't at 100% in the field and struggled to find any breakthroughs. Les Harris picked up the only victim, clean bowling opener Wadsworth with an excellent delivery. 1 or 2 dropped catches and poor bits of fielding by the 2nds, however the initial total wasn't ever going to be enough against a solid Adwick lineup. The hosts coasted to the winning line with 10 overs to spare.

Chapeltown RBL 4-0 Team Sport

A depleted Legion side put in a real team performance to overcome a good Team Sport side.

The Rotherham Premier Division side started brightly and forced Lewis Fox in to two good saves.

Legion were down to the bare bones when Harley Wilson and captain Josh Savage went off injured, but took the lead when Jay Carter sent Luis Afonso-Ferreira down the right and he beat his man before firing home.

Carter made it 2-0 just before the break beating the offside trap when Alex Mosley found him and beating the keeper to the ball to finish well.

Morgan Cowell volleyed home expertly just after the break to make it 3-0, and the scoring was complete when Brandon Whitfields perfect pass found Afonso-Ferreira who finished for his second and Legions fourth.

It meant Fox kept his second clean sheet in two games with a defence marshalled by Danny Booth, Brandon Whitfield, Ash Gray and Adam Todd.

Church’s pre-seaon continues

Wednesday Staveley MW 2-1 Penistone Church FC

Friday A Charity Game

Penistone Church XI 9-0 ACAHM XI

Saturday The Charlie Wyatt Memorial Trophy Penistone Church 2-1 Worsborough Bridge Athletic

It was a busy week for Church as preparations continued for the new season. They suffered a two-one loss on the Astro-turf at Staveley on Wednesday night then played on Friday and Saturday winning both games against ACAHM & Co and Worsborough Bridge Athletic.

Co-manager Steve Lenthall

It’s been an excellent week for us. The Staveley game on Wednesday was a very tough test. Playing on Astroturf is a faster game than what we normally play on grass but we weren’t good enough in patches of the game even though we went one-nil up through Leon Hurles-Brook. Staveley pulled one back and eventually went on to get the winner. The goals we conceded were sloppy so we’ve had to work on that.

On Friday we played a charity game v Acahm & Co. It was a great game to be involved and it was a chance for us to be able to use the under twenty-ones and reserve players. I knew

it wouldn’t be a competitive game against them but we prepared right and played in the manner that we intend to play through the season. We won the game nine-nil, played some decent stuff at times and we looked really fit. It was hard because several of the players were due to play the day after against Worsborough Bridge so we had to manage them really well.

On Saturday we played Worsborough Bridge for the Charlie Wyatt Memorial Cup which we wanted to win as it was our final preseason game. Worsborough were the better side in the thirty minutes but we got to grips with it for the next fifteen and scored a great goal, Tom Brennan pressed, won the ball and we ended up scoring with a great finish from Leon Hurles-Brook to go one-nil up but we weren’t really at it. Second half we changed our shape a little bit, got to grips with their middle three and we were better. Worsborough replied when Jack Roberts conceded a penalty with a foul on Harley Holt, Kane Swinburn converting. We then won the game with an excellent strike from Nathan Keightley, he cut inside with his left foot and hit the top bin, a goal worthy of winning any game.

It was pleasing to get the win, the cup stays at Penistone this year, it’s going to be an annual event and we wish Worsborough all the best for their coming season.

It’s been a great pre-season for us, I’m really chuffed with the lads, their attitudes have been first class, just to lose the one game is a testament to them and how hard they’ve

worked. The stand-out performance was the one against Pontefract last week and hopefully that standard will be on show when the league starts at Golcar on Friday night. Steve can be heard on the link below https://soundcloud.com/dmbpengeston/02steve-lenthall-pre-season-20-07-2024

Monies raised during the two charity games were shared between

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Young Lives Against Cancer and Prostate Cancer Research each receiving £235

Over towards Wakefield Lois Lopez had an excellent run at the Nostell Priory 10k taking first place in the ladies over50 age category in a time of 50-02.

In North Yorskhire Graihagh Turner was fourth under17 girl at the Cracoe Fell Race. Peter Beever and Kelvin Bowskill competed in the Rockingham Chase which was the lastest round of the KMR series.

STEELS HOLD CELTIC

Stocksbridge PS 0-0 Farsley Celtic

Stocksbridge Park Steels held National League North side Farsley Celtic to a 0-0 draw in their first pre-season friendly of the summer at Bracken Moor on Friday, 19 July.

Steels, who were without a few key personnel including manager Ian Richards, found themselves under the cosh from the first whistle, with Farsley starting the game on the front foot. Goalkeeper Harry Garman was in action 10 minutes into the game, parrying a cross before Jordan Lemon headed the ball away for a corner.

Farsley’s Alex Kiwomya had the first major chance of the game when a sublime touch saw him surpass Dan Nelson and go one on one with Garman. The goalkeeper, though, stood tall. Garman then produced a flying save to keep the scoreline at 0-0 towards the end of first half.

In one of the last major events of the first period, Farsley’s DJ Campton-Sturridge found himself through on goal, but failed to hit the target.

Stocksbridge were the better side in the first 15 minutes of the second half before Farsley changed their whole team just before the one-hour mark. Kyle Austin found Tommy Marshall on the right side of the box with an eye-of-the-needle pass, but the latter’s subsequent cross let him down.

Austin staked his claim to be the man of the match, making a brilliant tackle to win the ball back in mid-

field. Minutes later, he made another crucial interception to deny Farsley the chance to take a shot inside the box.

Meanwhile, a fresh Farsley XI continued their dominance over the Steels. One attacker got a good sight of the goal after beating Lemon, but failed to hit the target. In one of the best moments of the game, Nelson produced a stunning clearance in front of the Stocksbridge goal to deny the visitors what appeared to be a likely goal. Garman followed it up with another fine save to keep the scoreline at 0-0.

In the end, it was an impressive result for the Steels, who will now face Retford United at home on Tuesday, 23 July.

The Club would like to thank all of the fans who came to Bracken Moor to help on their Volunteers Day!

Several fans made the trip up to Bracken Moor, just a day after the friendly against Farsley Celtic, to help with sprucing up the ground. They would help with strimming, cleaning parts of the ground and various other tasks that make sure Bracken Moor is at it’s best for future games.

Everyone at the club would like to thank those who helped this morning. We wouldn’t be the club we are without fans, and you gave us a fantastic helping hand. If you wish to volunteer, please do get in touch.

BUSY WEEKEND FOR ATHLETES

After a few quiet weeks for Stocksbridge RC, aside from Rachel Howard's impressive performance in the Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix and club founder Richard Hayes' gold medal in the 3000m at the Yorkshire Vets Track & Field Championships, this past weekend saw a flurry of activity for the club.

Friday Night Grenochase

The youthful Middletons were in action on Friday night at the scorching hot Grenochase. Jonathan Middleton was the first MV60 back, finishing 34th overall in 21:00 minutes. Samantha Middleton also shone, finishing as the first FV55 in 24:40.

Dusk till Dawn 12-Hour Event

Saturday marked the beginning of the Dusk till Dawn 12-hour race, where runners aim to complete as many laps as possible around Manvers Lake. The race started at 6pm on Saturday evening and continued until 6am on Sunday. Three dedicat-

ed members from the club participated:

Rachel Vernon completed 16 laps (83.2K) and finished as the 4th lady overall.
