SKATE PARK PLANS BOOST Plans are underway to enhance recreational spaces in High Green, Sheffield, with the addition of skate park equipment in two popular parks. Angram Bank Park, situated near Foster Way, has recently been upgraded with a half pipe for skaters to enjoy. Now, proposals are being made to replicate this initiative at Charlton Brook Park, located at the opposite end of High Green. The project involves repurposing sections from a skate park in Stocksbridge, currently undergoing renovations for a new facility at Oxley Park. David Ogle (pictured), a resident and former parish councillor, explained that the refurbished equipment from Angram Bank Park was donated to the community. Efforts are underway to secure additional equipment from Oxley Park through grant applications. Mr. Ogle highlighted the costeffectiveness of this approach, emphasising that acquiring the equipment secondhand significantly
reduces expenses. He expressed satisfaction with the recent installation at Angram Bank Park, noting its positive reception among residents.
Plans for Charlton Brook Park include replacing an underutilised basketball court with the new skate park equipment while retaining the basketball hoops for recreational use.

Pooch heartbreak Call 0114 283 1100
Replaced by satisfaction for puppy socialiser couple AFTER having to put four beloved pets to sleep in recent years, heartbroken David and Liz Ward knew volunteering with the Support Dogs charity was the way forward. “We lost two labs – Diesel in 2018 and Bailey in 2022,” said David. “I said ‘we’re not going through this again’ – Bailey was the fourth dog we had to put to sleep. “You would think it would get easier, but it doesn’t – it gets harder.” The couple, from Stocksbridge, decided against having any more dogs. That was until Liz came home from Meadowhall with a Support Dogs puppy socialiser leaflet. “Blame my wife! Two months later, we got a pup – that’s how fast it happened,” said David. The role means they give pups the best possible start in life and provide basic training before handing the dogs back to Support Dogs at 14 months to attend ‘big school’.
Instead of potential heartache of losing a pet, they now have the satisfaction of knowing they are nurturing a puppy to go on to become an assistance dog to help an autistic child or an adult living with epilepsy or physical disability. The couple, who have two grown-up children, were recently recognised for their sterling efforts by being named Support Dogs’ Puppy Socialisers of the Year. David, a retired operations engineer, said: “We were completely surprised to have won – we had absolutely no idea.” Liz, retired teaching assistant, said: “We were quite shocked to receive a phone call to say we’d won the award. “The main thing for me is getting out and about with the dogs. It’s lovely when they’ve got the Support Dogs bandana on and people stop and ask questions. “Some people are really surprised and like the idea that we are getting involved with a charity that’s so useful. It opens up their eyes, especially when they hear about the seizure alert dogs.”
In May 2022, black Labrador Mason bounded into their lives, and with excellent support from the Support Dogs staff, their story began. Mason moved on in November 2023, followed by provision of holiday cover for Debbie and Sascha. They now have Debbie, a chocolate Labrador, full time. “We’ve never regretted it – we treat it as a job and try and do it to the best of our ability,” said David. “When Mason moved on it was difficult. “My wife was in tears, but at the end of the day, they’re going on to do better things. “We will continue to help – whatever Support Dogs want us to do, whether it’s fostering or having puppies.” David said he thinks the work that Support Dogs carries out is “excellent” and described how he was pleasantly surprised to discover that the charity’s dogs are provided to clients nationwide, not just locally. Mental Health Charity announces Partnership ShawMind, Sheffield’s Own Mental Health Charity, is delighted to announce its appointment as Official Mental Health Charity to the Sheffield Steelers, Sheffield Steel Dogs, Sheffield Sharks and the Sheffield Hatters – this first time ever that a Mental Health charity has been simultaneously appointed by four major sports clubs in Sheffield. Peter Wingrove, ShawMind’s CEO is convinced that advocacy around Mental Health has its place, but the community must now take action to reduce the massive problem. “We are delighted that these elite clubs have chosen to appoint us as their official Mental Health charity. Each of them is deeply committed to our community, and specifically to ensuring positive future opportunities for our city’s children and young people. There are an estimated 1.5-million children who are struggling with their Mental Health in the UK right
now. ShawMind is committed to ensuring their future Mental Health prosperity, hope and opportunity. What a fantastic opportunity for us not just to talk about Mental Health, but to work together to take action and have impact. Let’s make sure that, as a community, we leave no-one behind.” The partnerships will involve working together to find ways to help local children and young people from all walks of life with their Mental Health and wellbeing, some who may be at risk of violence or criminal activity, suffering with bereavement, who might be on the Neuro-diversity spectrum, or perhaps dealing with school refusal and more.
Sarah Backovic, Managing Director of the Sheffield Sharks said, “We are extremely excited about our partnership with ShawMind, and see it as a commitment to the mental well-
being of our players, our fans, and our community. Basketball is so much more than a sport, it can be used as a powerful vehicle to promote mental health awareness. We hope this collaboration can help acknowledge and support this and we are proud to be part of a team that is striving to make a difference in Sheffield and beyond.” ShawMind was established in 2016 by Sheffield-born UK/ US businessman, Adam Shaw. In 2017 it forced a Parliamentary debate on compulsory Mental Health education in schools, and legislation on the issue was ultimately promulgated in September 2021. Following this watershed achievement, ShawMind has have helped thousands of people across the UK with their Mental Health through its various programmes.

MEETING DISCUSSES PROPOSALS FOR NEW BUILDING IN TOWN CENTRE In a well-attended meeting chaired by Barbara Horsman, chair of the Stocksbridge Community Forum, residents expressed deep concerns regarding a proposed new building in the Stocksbridge Town Centre. The gathering, held to discuss the recent planning application, highlighted a notable lack of consultation and communication with local residents prior to its submission. According to notes taken by Horsman, attendees unanimously voiced opposition to the proposed building, citing its potential negative impact on several smaller community-led projects. These projects, including a cycle trail link-up, river clean-up, hydrotherapy pool, and shop front improvements, are deemed essential to the local area's development and well-being. The community also emphasised the possibility of refurbishing the existing library, instead of knocking it down, advocating for an insulating refurbishment and potential additions such as photovoltaic panels and grey-water catchment systems. Concerns were raised about relocating the local archive, with attendees expressing a desire to keep it within the library for accessibility and community preservation purposes. Regarding community space, participants noted the abundance of underused spaces in the valley, questioning the necessity of additional developments. Concerns were also raised about the visual impact of a large new building along Manchester Road, particularly if it were to be used for offices, exacerbating existing parking problems and congestion in the area.
recent closures, and instead suggested focusing on repurposing existing areas, such as the old sinking cellars in front of the library, into landscaped spaces.
The meeting also addressed broader community needs, including the long-awaited implementation of a hopper bus and the potential reinstatement of the tram bus. Concerns were raised about the lack of progress on plans to reopen the railway for passenger use, despite Attendees expressed scepticism about the via- community demand. bility of another café in the town centre, given

Transparency, value for money, adherence to due processes, and rules were also focal points of discussion, with several participants urging authorities to uphold these principles throughout the decision-making process.

Major step toward re-opening Doncaster-Sheffield Airport South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, has announced that the region will take a major step toward re-opening DoncasterSheffield Airport (DSA) and allow for a 10-year plan to drive economic growth in Doncaster, subject to the decision of the Mayoral Combined Authority Board on 13 February 2024. Fifteen months since DSA was closed by owners Peel Group, the Mayor, City of Doncaster Council and the Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) have been working tirelessly in the interests of the public and businesses in South Yorkshire to find a way to re-open it that is legally and financially sound and protects the taxpayer.
Last summer, the MCA awarded City of Doncaster Council £3.1 million to prepare an Outline Business Case to take control of the airport through a leasing arrangement, re-establish operations under a new business model, and use the asset as an anchor for growth at the wider Gateway East site to support economic regeneration and benefits to the city and region as a whole. The Outline Business Case, published today, states that reopening the airport provides the best opportunity to secure economic growth and wellbeing not just in Doncaster but will have wider benefits for South Yorkshire as a whole.
City of Doncaster Council will have £138 million made available by the MCA via Gainshare to support economic ambitions including as outlined in the Doncaster Place Investment Plan which includes South Yorkshire Airport City and Gateway East. Elements of activity could also be supported from other MCA funding that has been set aside to support this project. Ultimately, significant investment is going into Doncaster to help it pursue the jobs, growth and opportunity it wants, and it will be local and regional residents and businesses who will benefit.

Ted’s keyboard exercise turns into a full life story It began as a simple exercise in improving keyboard skills… but with the support of St Luke’s Hospice, it’s become a fascinating insight into the daily life of patient Ted Murat.
in full, with Ted also adding special extra sections of his childhood in Attercliffe, his lifelong passion for cycling and his 62 years with wife Sheila, who died last autumn.
Ted, who is 86, started keeping a daily diary when son Philip gave him a computer back in the year 2000.
“I had no inclination to write my story but when it was suggested to me I thought I’d give it a go as I never say no to anything,” Ted said.
“I just wanted a bit of keyboard practice so I just started to put down what came into my head or simple notes about things that had happened that day,” Ted says. “I was just writing for me, it wasn’t to entertain anybody – it was just observations about things that were happening at the time.” Move forward more than 20 years and retired television engineer Ted, who lives with pulmonary fibrosis, was spending time on the St Luke’s Hospice In Patient Centre, when Occupational Therapist Rob Smith suggested that he might like to put down some of his memories on paper. That’s when Ted pointed out that he already had more than two decades of his life preserved on a computer file and with the support and encouragement of fellow Occupational Therapist Lorraine West, that story has now been printed out
“People have said they want to read it and I’ve said I’d be flattered, even though it was never written to be read. “What I like myself is that I can open a page at random and be quite surprised at what I’ve written!” Ted, who lived for many years in Wadsley Bridge before becoming a resident at the Porterbrook Care Home in Crosspool, now looks forward to his regular St Luke’s visits. “It gives me the opportunity to meet other people from different environments and I love it, I think it’s wonderful,” he admits. “It’s thanks to St Luke’s that I now have my story printed out and that’s meant a lot to me. “I’ve never thought about turning it into a book – I’m just amazed it has got this far and that’s only because St Luke’s has spurred me on.”

Sheffield's Cupola Gallery is set to host an intriguing solo exhibition featuring the works of local artist Sean Williams. Titled "Oak Park to Meadow View," the showcase promises a journey through Williams' unique vision of the world, blurring the lines between the real and the unreal. The exhibition, running from February 10th to March 9th, will kick off with an opening evening on Friday, February 9th, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm, offering attendees a chance to delve into Williams' artistic realm while enjoying hospitality provided by the gallery. Located at Cupola Gallery on 178a Middlewood Road in Sheffield, the exhibition will feature around 30 paintings ranging in size from 20 x 28 cm to 60 x 90 cm. Visitors can expect to be captivated by Williams' masterful technique, which initially appears hyper-realistic but upon closer inspection reveals intricate details crafted from tiny dots of colour. Williams' paintings depict scenes from a fictional English town, inviting viewers to question their perceptions as they explore landscapes devoid of human presence yet teeming with activity. From parks to farms, the artworks offer glimpses into the outskirts of suburbia, where urban and rural elements intertwine in a mesmerizing dance. Karen Sherwood, Director and curator of Cupola Gallery, describes Williams' work as "extraordinary" and "powerful," noting its ability to evoke both beauty and a sense of unease. She emphasises the artist's skilful
portrayal of light and the subtle narratives woven into each painting, leaving viewers pondering the mysteries hidden within. In discussing his latest body of work, Williams explains his fascination with the liminal spaces that exist on the fringes of civilization. Through his Pointillist-inspired technique, he seeks to capture the essence of these overlooked landscapes, inviting viewers to become "still points of a turning world." A Sheffield native, Williams is not only an accomplished artist but also a respected curator dedicated to showcasing the enduring relevance of painting in contemporary art. His accolades include being shortlisted for prestigious awards such as the Marmite Painting Prize and the John Ruskin Prize. With works featured in private collections worldwide, Williams' impact extends far beyond his hometown. However, it is in Sheffield that he finds inspiration, drawing from its landscapes and communities to create art that challenges perceptions and sparks contemplation. As Cupola Gallery welcomes visitors to immerse themselves in Sean Williams' captivating world, it invites them to experience the convergence of reality and imagination through the artist's brushstrokes. For more information about the exhibition and gallery, visit www. cupolagallery.com or contact info@cupolagallery.com, or call 0114 2852665.

Local News Brilliant High Street plans
sports centre).
Dear Editor
No business case has been made for a new building and its use. It will house many self-contained units, purportedly for office-type business start-ups, for which there appears no interest – unsurprisingly, as several such units are vacant at STEP, as to be excepted with nascent businesses remaining home-based to cut costs and compete. So what is going on? It is not unlikely another in the long line of Sheffield city Council ‘white elephants’, but this one known to be so from the outset. When, almost inevitably, the new building is under-utilised, the self-contained units could be fitted out as studio apartments / flats, to house … those ‘hard to place’ on the Council waiting list.
You have printed the new plans for the high street plans and I want to shout my support. Fox Valley is good and has put us on the map but the town's high street has been forgotten for more than 10 years. I remember on a Saturday walking down the hill with my dad and going to Crawshaws and getting a quarter of sweets and seeing it busy with neighbours and friends and it was what we did on a Saturday. It was worth the walk back. This new town centre plan with a town square is a brilliant idea and what we need. It is horrible and embarrassing right now and stops you going. This is the best idea to happen since Fox Valley and one that keeps the money in town and will brings different shops and new jobs for local families like Fox Valley did but better because it will be local shops and businesses. 10 out of 10 idea but just need a local bus that is regular so we don't need to get the car out. Mr Bell, Glebelands Road
Towns Fund new block a Trojan horse to house those ‘hard to place’? Alarm at the state of the Towns Fund bid for Stocksbridge could not have been louder or clearer at the Community Forum meeting in the Venue last Wednesday. Nobody from Sheffield City Council (SCC) bothered (dared) to attend despite seemingly having taken full control and not disclosing important aspects of what’s happening. Several independent voices with many years experience of working in local government, contracts, etc, expressed astonishment at the absence of any business case, proper communication, or a constituted overseeing body. Both our MP (Miriam) and our most senior local councillor (Julie) – our two most outspoken representatives – have just been officially sidelined, respectively in secret and for making a stand against the City Council. Almost all of the proposed projects have been shelved without explanation to interested parties, leaving 80% of the money to pay for what appears to be a flexible-use multi-story block that SCC – not Stocksbridge – will wholly own! Conveniently for SCC, this entails demolishing a building they have long wanted to close, and now say eats money: the Library. This despite very recently installing a complete new heating system, and the building being newish and sound. SCC has never made a case for closure, as it’s so far from any other Library (albeit they told us to go to Ecclesfield when they pulled funding for our
Shop announces closure The Old Loxley Post Office made the “difficult decision to close our doors” due to the cost of living crisis. The shop, which strived to stock local produce, was run by Vanessa Cutler and family. The store stopped being a Post Office in 2008 due to cutbacks which saw Sheffield lose 16 out of 98 branches. The Friends of the Loxley Valley posted on Facebook: “A very sad day: the only newsagent and general store left in the Loxley Valley closes for the last time this afternoon. “Thanks to the Cutler family and their lovely staff at The Old Loxley Post Office for many years of friendly service to the local community. You’ll be missed! Good luck with the goat project.”
As a coup de grace, there is no provision to house our local history archive currently in the Library, in either the temporary replacement or the new building (where the library is to be be scaled down to a small fraction of its current floorspace). Steve Moxon

I had a dream Dear Look Local Last night I had a dream that the 20 million plus for Stocksbridge could be spent on stuff we really needed. In my dream every local young person could apply for a Further Education bursary to make up for the shameful lack of A-level and other provision in the area and the terrible standard of public transport to get them anywhere else to study. In my dream there were the after-school clubs, youth work and preschool provision we had before the Tories cut everything.
Men once believed ‘take only for need from mother earth to survive Till plunder for profit, destroy without thought, produce by greed arrive Only slowly becoming aware how near to annihilation they’d come Finding answers with peaceful green words, agreement in every home But hatred, distrust and despair, encouraged by arms manufacturing High profits decree future world will be free but todays not the time for acting The people insist that earth’s message is clear Governments must act now to repair and must hear Green can replace greed, natural methods exceed might Irreparable damage is done but a green world is in sight The children insist with a mighty loud voice ‘Tis our world, our owed future, our choice!’ Sheila Gent, Stocksbridge

NEW SKATE PARK About 3 years ago I began looking into adding additional ramps to High Green Angram Bank’s existing Skate/Scooter/BMX park. During a site visit with David Rice Sheffield city parks manager and local High Green man, he told me about some ramps that would be scrapped at Oxley Park Stocksbridge on the commencement of a new concrete all-wheels park being built. Amie Rowland projects manager and Lightmain Leisure gathered permissions to build along with required health and safety approval, quotes and future maintenance funding. I applied for a portion of the Community infrastructure levy allocated to High Green from the construction of local domestic and commercial buildings. This allocation was denied in favour of planting wildflowers and funding Grenoside Park.
repainted it. Plus all existing damage to the original ramps was repaired which included replacing five skatelite boards, some welding and some painting. To cut a long story short we got £45,000 worth of work done for £12,499. 99p a massive bargain that made the whole project possible. Angram Bank now has a new half-pipe ramp added to its existing ramps all of which are in as new condition. It’s truly amazing what is possible with some determination good will and good luck. I am deeply grateful to all who helped make this project possible. David Ogle High Green volunteer.

‘Steel Not For Sale’ signs erected across Sheffield as campaign to save industry intensifies Hundreds of ‘Steel Not For Sale’ signs in the style of estate agent boards will go up in front gardens across Sheffield. The signs show the strength of the community’s opposition to continued threats to UK steel and come as Unite’s campaign to secure a long-term future for the industry intensifies.

I woke up to the reality of an increasingly secretive towns fund board blowing the lot on a so-called hub and shop fronts, and that’s after using our money to knock DOWN the library.

government must act in the national interest and provide similar guarantees to save jobs and maintain capacity to allow for the steel industry’s future growth. “Steel demand is growing and the UK is ideally placed to be a global leader in green steel if the right decisions are made, as Unite has clearly shown. Stocksbridge out muscled A day that had almost everything finally ended in defeat for Globe Holidays sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby with visitors Knottingley RUFC taking the spoils with a hard-fought and at times, brutal victory by 24pts to 10pts. Stocksbridge gave a 1st XV debut to another of their promising youngsters, teenager Max Bevan who showed enough to suggest he will be a permanent fixture before too long. Home match day sponsors Premier Stone Worktops Ltd welcomed a return from retirement for No. 8 Jordan ‘spud’ Fletcher who added some bulk to the Stocksbridge back row, whilst ‘clock tower’ Beal was passed it to play just before the start. There was a touching minute’s applause from all at the ground for young Ely Fearnley who passed away last week, after a courageous fight with a brain tumour. Playing against the slope in the first half, Stocksbridge had the better of the early exchanges and deservedly took the lead on 24 minutes, when veteran goal kicker Scott Bowskill slotted a simple 25yard penalty after a ruck infringement. This seemed to spark the visitors into action and they pounced on a Stocksbridge error to record their first try of the afternoon, adding the conversion for good measure.
Knottingley reacted to a suggestion of a tip tackle and a bout of ‘handbags’ followed, as the game degenerated for a while. From another flashpoint, the visiting open-side flanker received a yellow card for a cowardly punch on home centre Jack Pearson, who was forced from the field under HIA protocols. Another penalty award saw Bowskill kick deep into the visitors red zone and Beal leapt high to win the line out, feeding that man Frith to release the back line and Bowskill’s deft chip was pounced on by the on-rushing Harrison Norman who collected and rounded the full back to restore the lead for Stocksbridge, Norman is kindly sponsored by Mrs Diane Woodcock, Bowskill added the extras to leave the half time score: Stocksbridge Rugby 10pts – Knottingley RUFC 7pts, and all to play for. Knottingley came out for the 2nd stanza with a change of game plan, a more conservative pick and go, or just one-man simple rugby which caused some problems for the home side, who gave away too many penalties around the breakdown area. The visitors were rewarded with a try and a yellow card for Stocksbridge’s John Richardson who was adjudged to be deliberately off-side. Another flare-up saw a red card issued to a Knottingley player for striking however, the visitors kept
HOWARTH TESTIMONIAL SHEFFIELD skipper Kyle Howarth has named Freddie Lindgren and Rory Schlein as the first two riders for his testimonial event next month. The two will line-up for the Rest of the World side that will take on the 2024 Tru7 Group Tigers on Thursday, March 14 (7.30) at Owlerton.
Said Howarth: “These were two of the first people I thought of for the opposition when I started planning my testimonial and it means a lot that they’ve agreed to ride. “Freddie is a rider that matures with age and it’s an honour to have him riding in my testimonial meeting.
“Rory is a great guy to have on your side in the pits. He wins races for fun and is so fast when he hits the front. “We all thought he had retired from the sport a couple of years ago but he is back and riding as good as ever. “He has had some pretty big crashes down the years but like most of us he loves riding his bike and entertains the fans on the terraces.
Howarth won the top-flight alongside Lindgren at Wolverhampton in 2016 before spending two-and-a-half seasons with Schlein at Monmore Green.
“He pushed himself to the limit in the World Championship last season and I’m sure he will be fighting for top spot again in 2024.
Whilst Schlein has been a regular visitor to the Steel City in recent years, it will be a much rarer appearance for World No.2 Lindgren.
“We had some great times together riding for Wolverhampton including winning the league title.
“I know how gutted he was last season when Wolves fell short in the league title race. He likes Sheffield and I’m sure he will be scoring plenty of points at my meeting.”
“The fans love him and I’m sure there will be plenty of them travelling from the Midlands to watch him ride in my meeting.
Sponsorship packages for the event are now available - for more details e-mail khrtestimonial@gmail.com or search ‘Kyle Howarth Racing’ on Facebook.

FORMER FOOTBALLER RETURNS TO CRICKET A former semi-professional footballer is to return to playing cricket after a long spell out pursuing a football career
James Tevendale a former Stocksbridge Pasrke Steels footballer is to sign for Stocksbridge Cricket Club. He came through the junior ranks at Aston Hall CC and went on to play in their 1st XI. A very talented sportsman, James played for Yorkshire junior representative sides before having to park cricket in pursuit of his football career, aged 21. A spokesperson for the Cricket Club said
“James has impressed everyone at Winter Nets since returning to the game and nobody can quite believe he hasn't picked a bat up in 20 year. James is no stranger to Bracken Moor either, smashing the goals in for Stocksbridge Park Steels on the other side of the fence in his heyday! We're delighted to welcome him to the other side of Bracken Moor and can't wait to see him in the whites!”
to their revised gameplan to record a further couple of tries to extend their lead. Young flyer Harrison Norman broke out and danced through the defence, but Stocksbridge were unable to capitalise, and despite their improved efforts, a final score of Stocksbridge Rugby 10pts – Knottingley RUFC 24pts gave the visitors a try bonus point victory. Stocksbridge now drop to 6th in the Counties 4 Yorkshire (phase 2) South league ladder and will be hoping for better fortunes next weekend when Thornensians RUFC are the visitors to the Coal Pit Lane stadium, in a re-arranged clash with a 2.15pm kick off. Despite several good individual performances, the Asphalt Grid Systems Man of the Match award went to young flyer Harrison Norman who was a constant threat to the visitors throughout the match. A disappointing end to a game that Stocksbridge were looking to win, so they will be keen to get back on the horse next weekend, looking for a victory over Thornensians RUFC

10 MAN STEELS CLAIM A POINT Brighouse 1 - 1 Steels Stocksbridge Park Steels held on to claim a 1-1 draw against Brighouse Town despite being reduced to ten men. Brighouse had the better of the play for the early part of the first half. They created half chances but the Steel's defence remained firm, with a decent volley from Jack Normanton being well blocked. However, while Brighouse had a lot of the ball, they did struggle to create many clear-cut chances. In a change to how the season has gone, Stocksbridge got one chance and then one goal. Tom Charlesworth’s throw-in found Luke Rawson in the box. He had his back to goal but was able to turn and with the snap shot, found the bottom corner to put Stocksbridge ahead. In the second half, the game would completely change on a bizarre incident. Ross Goodwin and Luke Hogg would run into each other, seemingly because of a push from one of the Brighouse defenders. After Hogg received treatment, he said something that the referee took a dislike to. Hogg was given his second yellow and his marching orders.
Brighouse threw on some attackers to take advantage of the extra man and after a period of domination, it paid off. A ball was played into the box and Harry Garman went for it. However, Mohamed Qasim got to it first and was able to volley home. Eventually, Stocksbridge was able to settle down with ten men and certainly made their case to win the game. Charlie Oglesby had a header that was cleared off the line before a few minutes later Jack Watson went clear only for Jamie Hassall to make a key save. There were two key chances for either side before the end. Joshua Dacre had a strike for the first team when Garman was in no man’s land but Jack Tinker made a brilliant clearance off the line to keep the game level. At the other end, Alex O’Connor tried to curse his former team but didn’t get the curl on his finish right and it went straight at Hassall. Both teams would have to be happy with a point. CHURCH PUT ON A SHOW Penistone Church 5 - 1 Thackley
On Thursday all at Penistone Church FC were saddened to hear about the passing of volunteer and friend of Penistone Church FC Charlie Wyatt. Charlie was well-known in grassroots football and will be sadly missed by many. Our condolences go out to his loved ones. On a happier note, Saturday marked the official retirement of the Church long serving amenities manager Janet Proost. Janet marked the occasion with a small reception after Saturday’s game and now hopes to spend more time with her family. We thank Janet for her services over the years and wish her a long, happy and welldeserved retirement. Church started reasonably well and went one up when Nathan Keightley sprang the offside trap and finished well to give Church a sixth-minute lead. Thackley then took the game to Church and on another day could have equalised.
Church didn’t pick enough second balls up in the first twenty or twentyfive minutes but did start getting on top of the game towards the end of the first half. During the second half it was probably the best they’ve ever played for a number of weeks Ant Brown’s first goal came from a tremendous build-up, there was a good switch of play, he got the wrong side of his defender, the ball bounced up and he hit it first time from twenty yards sending it past the keeper for Church to take a deserved two-nil lead. Then Jordan Coduri fashioned a chance for himself to score then had the understanding to lay it across the box for Nathan Keightley to score taking the score to three-nil. Thackley then managed to pull one back but Church reacted in the best possible manner when Nathan Keightley completed his hat trick soon after to make it four-one.
Ant Brown has got his second goal from a penalty which he despatched with aplomb after being brought down in the box. The final score was five-one to Church Assistant manager Brett Lovell “Did we deserve to win five-one? Being selfish I don’t care, the lads deserve it today for their endeavour to get a result for the club and Charlie today, we said to the lads let’s get the result today as a tribute to Charlie and they’ve duly delivered.” Other esults EV Sportswear County Senior Premier Division Stocksbridge Park Steels Reserves 0-1 Penistone Church Reserves Fixtures: Saturday 10th February 2024 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Frickley Athletic v Penistone Church FC Kick off 3-00 pm
YOUNGSTERS READY FOR COUNTY TRIALS Three Stocksbridge Rugby Union youngsters have been nominated for representative trials for Yorkshire U20’s Group. Harrison Norman, Josh Kerr and James Christopherson have become regular fixtures in the 1st XV since their early season debuts and the Club have high hopes for their development and progression.
