TRAMS TO STOCKSBRIDGE?

public support to extend tram

Marie Tidball, Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has launched a survey seeking public support for a plan to bring the tram-train to Stocksbridge.

Marie’s call follows the Supertram coming back under public control for the first time in nearly 30 years, as “the first step in our journey back to a public transport system that puts people first”.

And Marie is not alone. The plan has the support of the Mayor and Cllr Tom Hunt, Labour leader of Sheffield City Council, who are developing detailed proposals for the project.

Marie said:

“The Tories have been promising to reopen the Don Valley Line for years but they’ve got nothing to show for their warm words, it’s all just promises of jam tomorrow.

“Labour now has the opportunity with the Supertram back in public control, to chart an exciting new future and extend a tram-train route out to Stocksbridge, connecting communities along the route to the

existing tram network and the national rail network with tram-trains.

“I want to demonstrate strong public support for this idea to give it the best possible chance of success and I urge local residents to share your views in my survey.”

Marie is a powerful advocate for her area and I know will be a strong voice in helping to move this forward.”

“We are working hard to improve public transport and improve connectivity across Sheffield and it is great to have Marie championing this plan.

Check your ba ery plea - fire service

Fire ghters are calling on e-bike users to check their batteries a er a house re almost ended in tragedy.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue attended a re at a house on Ecclesall Road in She eld on Sunday morning which was caused by an e-bike battery.

Five re engines were called at 11.30am on Sunday 28 April and found the ground oor to be alight on arrival. ree hose reels and one main jet were used to extinguish the re.

Five people managed to evacuate but three people were taken to hospital a er sustaining injuries a er jumping out of the rst- oor window.

e re was caused by a failure of a lithium ion battery in an e-bike which was on charge alongside with six other e-bikes within the living room.

e ferocity at which lithium-ion batteries, used to power e-bikes and e-scooters, burn and explode caused the re to engulf all three oors of the house.

Fires involving e-bikes and e-scooters are a growing risk for South Yorkshire as 15 res involving lithium-ion batteries were recorded in 2023, almost double the number that occurred in 2022.

In March this year, a re involving an e-bike and e-scooter caused signi cant damage to a house on Tawny Street, Barnsley whilst in May last year two men were lucky to escape with their lives a er a re involving multiple lithium-ion batteries in a house in Sharrow Street, She eld.

at is why the service has today shared this story to launch its Charge Happy campaign aimed at increasing awareness of the re risk posed by lithium-ion batteries.

Ade Parkin, Group Manager at South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “ e people involved in these incidents are lucky to have escaped without serious injury.

“We know that e-bikes and e-scooters are growing in popularity and can be really bene cial in opening up cycling to people of all tness levels, not to mention the obvious environmental bene ts they bring in terms of reduced carbon emissions compared to other means of transport.

“ at is why it is so important to only buy bikes from reputable suppliers that show clearly that they meet UK/EU safety laws and only use the charger supplied with the battery.

“We’d also encourage owners of e-bikes to think carefully about where you charge your vehicle and not block any escape routes.”

Penistone Man to Trek D-Day Beaches for War Veterans

‘I may be gone a while’

In an inspirational return to charity challenges, Jim Morton of Penistone is gearing up for another monumental trek, this time across the historic D-Day landing beaches of World War II, in a bid to raise funds for war veterans.

ree years a er his remarkable journey around the coast of mainland Britain, the 64-yearold is setting his sights on the shores of France.

Morton plans to walk the entirety of the ve beaches — Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword — famously known as the battlegrounds of the D-Day operation. His journey is scheduled to culminate on the 80th anniversary of the invasion, June 6th, underlining the historical signi cance of his endeavour.

Re ecting on his motivations and previous achievements, Morton shared with Look Local, "People will remember me for being the local man who walked

around the coast of the British mainland in 2021/2022 to raise money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust. So far, I have raised £40,000 from the walk and sales of my book 'I May Be Gone a While,' but I promised to raise £50,000 and I will. is is the next step.”

Morton’s e orts have not only showcased his dedication but also his ability to inspire community support through his adventures. Supporters who wish to contribute to his cause can make donations through his Just Giving page, accessible via the link at the top of his Facebook page, aptly named ‘I may be gone a while.’

Green Light for Community Fridge

In the heart of a small North She eld village, a novel initiative is sprouting, promising not only to feed the body but also to nourish the soul.

Amidst communal cakes and buzzing new ventures, volunteers in the community have been given the nod from a national network, which is setting the stage for something more than just a meal.

What's unfolding could transform le overs into lifelines and a room into a rendezvous of resilience and community.

e Wharncli e Side Development Association has secured approval from Hubbub, the national coordinator of the Community Fridge Network, to establish a Community Fridge at the local church in Wharncli e Side. is initiative aims to distribute food that would otherwise be discarded by the food network to local residents at no cost. Unlike food banks, the primary focus here is on reducing food waste. Additionally, the project encourages communal cooking and dining, fostering friendship and community spirit.

e Development Association, which was established earlier this year, has begun planning the project and is actively seeking volunteers to help run the initiative. Interested parties can reach out to Laura at laura.tatchell@ stocksbridgeclc.co.uk.

Preparations are underway to furnish a small room near the church's front entrance, funded by a grant that will also cover the cost of a large fridge and freezer.

e group plans to operate the fridge on Saturday mornings, complemented by co ee and cake for its patrons. is new endeavour follows the successful launch of the Community Café in Brightholmlee, which is open every Wednesday.

Other community projects on the Association's agenda include enhancements to Dragon Park for young people and the establishment of a youth club at the Community Centre.

e Association welcomes new members and will hold its next meeting on May 18th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the Brightholmlee Methodist Church.

CCTV appeal following burglary

Police O cers in She eld have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with a burglary.

It is reported that in the early hours of 24 February, a man broke into Saw Grinders Union on Penistone Road and forced entry through the window before stealing several amounts of alcohol and food. Enquiries are ongoing but o cers are keen to identify the man in the image as they may be able to assist with enquiries. Do you recognise him?

Man ‘bites’ boy’s ear on live TV broadcast Community Spirit Soars at Benefit Gig

In an inspiring display of community support, the Legionnaires Club in Stocksbridge hosted a benefit gig that brought together local musicians to support essential services at the Cedar Road Christian Centre.

The event was a direct response to an eye-opening article in Look Local that highlighted the funding challenges faced by the citizen's advice service and food bank located at the centre.

The evening, Friday 29 March was filled with entertainment and goodwill, featuring a standout performance by Gerry Trew, who delighted the crowd with his authentic Rod Stewart tribute. Adding to the musical feast, The Breeze captivated attendees with their jazz-tinged blues and rock melodies. This memorable gig was not just a showcase of talent but also a rallying call for community support, which was echoed by the promotional efforts of the Christian Centre, Christchurch Church, and Voyager Art Space.

Garden of Eden

Ticket sales were brisk, with Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre contributing to the cause by selling tickets that helped raise a significant portion of the funds. The Legionnaires Club itself saw a generous turnout, with proceeds from the night totalling £355. Together with the funds raised through ticket sales at the leisure centre, the total amount collected came to £480, just shy of the £500 goal. In a heartwarming turn of events, a last-minute donation of £20 pushed the total to the target, much to the delight of all involved.

Special recognition was given to Dave and the staff at the Legionnaires Club for their hospitality and efforts in making the benefit gig a success. The event not only achieved its financial goals but also strengthened the bonds within the community, as evidenced by the enthusiastic participation of all who attended.

A Man seen 'biting boy's ear' at World Snooker Championship in Sheffield is to be investigated by police.

Police are investigating after a man bit a boy's ear during the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.

Footage of the incident at the Winter Gardens was broadcast on the BBC, during a break in play while seven-time world

champion Stephen Hendry was speaking as a pundit. The man and the boy were among the crowds.

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "We are aware of the footage and officers will be reviewing the content. We would encourage the public not to speculate about the footage and the circumstances surrounding the content."

Parks have been ‘buzzing’ with Activity

Over this past 12 months the Parish Council has been ‘a hive’ of activity within the parks in the Parish.

We funded the removal, refurbishment, and reintegration of the skate park from Stocksbridge into Angram Bank Park, which is now being enjoyed by children of all ages.

Another park refurbishment was undertaken in Cart Road park which we supported by donating £4500 toward the re t of new play equipment and a lovely rainbow picnic table.

More recently we have given a grant of £10,000 to orncli e Tennis club to refurbish the facilities and revive the Tennis centre.

We have helped the Parish to become more inclusive as well, by providing Burncross Action Team with a grant to secure the rst inclusive roundabout to go in McKenzie Park in the whole of She eld at that time.

We have had lots of regal celebrations as well, kicking o last June with the Queen’s Jubilee beacon lighting in two of our Parish parks, Grenoside and Chapel-

town. ese saw over 800 residents enjoy the evening which included facepainting, music, food, rides and a visit from the Deputy Lord Lieutenant.

Towards the backend of 2023 we planted a circle of 7 trees in Chapeltown Park for the Queen’s Green Canopy, each tree representing a decade of her reign.

While in early June, the sun smiled on us as we celebrated the King’s Coronation in Mortomley Park with a summer fair which included funded rides and face paint for children, garden games, a tug of war competition, music, a makers market and refreshments.

As we move into the next nancial year, we have just launched our Bee Squared project, (hence the bee references throughout the article!) is will see us hand out over 660 packets of wild ower seed mixes tailored to improve the insect and bee population in the Parish. At a total cost of £600, each packet contains enough seeds to populate one square meter and will hopefully substantially help our little buzzy residents over the coming years.

Last week, Chapeltown Library transformed its usual storytelling hour into a vibrant gardening session, where local children had the opportunity to engage with nature. e event, part of the Spring Storytime series, saw 11 young participants getting their hands dirty—planting and watering owers under the guidance of the Chapeltown Action Group and library sta .

e library sta extended their gratitude to everyone involved, noting the beautiful outcome of the planting session. " e planting looks lovely, and it's all thanks to the community's e orts," one organiser commented.

Music for Palestinian Children

Gig-goers arrived at Shakespeare’s in She eld over the weekend in support of the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF).

e fundraiser aimed to use She eld’s strong association with music to raise money for a worthy cause, writes Erin Morris.

Charlie Davies, one of the event’s organisers, said: “It’s great to see so many people show up and do their part, even if it’s just showing their support by attending a gig, it all helps ”.

e sold-out event’s lineup included bands such as e Turncoats and Agropaco and saw over 80 tickets sold and over £400 raised. e £5 ticket price made sure the gig was still accessible.

e PCRF states that its aim is “to provide medical and humanitarian relief collectively and individually to children throughout the Levant, regardless of their nationality or religion”.

e charity works by providing both humanitarian and infrastructure projects surrounding Palestine as well as providing shelter and medical help to those children a ected by con ict.

is fundraiser is just one of the events exhibiting She eld’s solidarity with Palestine as demonstrations have taken place across the city.

She eld Cathedral is delighted to launch the very rst South Yorkshire Organ Festival this Summer half-term from 30 May to 2 June.

She eld is well-known for its music. e city is the home to the Artic Monkeys, Pulp, Def Leopard and Richard Hawley and has iconic music venues and events like e Leadmill and Tramlines Festival. However, She eld’s musical heritage extends beyond just living memory: South Yorkshire, and She eld in particular, can also boast to have many ne examples of the oldest and most complex musical instrument in the world, the organ. is music festival aims to break down barriers to the playing organ by giving people, young and old, the opportunity to nd out more about the organ and even experience playing one themselves.

e driving force behind this new four-day festival is James Mitchell, our new Organist and Head of Keyboard Studies: “I’m very excited to launch the rst South Yorkshire Organ Festival. ere are so many excellent organs across the region, yet too o en it can be di cult to discover or learn about these instruments. rough this festival, we hope to promote the region’s amazing heritage, with a wide range of events meaning there’s something for everyone. Roger collaborated with two-time Oscar winner and four-time Grammy award winner Hans Zimmer on the Academy nominated lm score and, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the lm’s release, he is coming to the cathedral to perform a suite Zimmer’s iconic music from the lm alongside other space-related music.

Also, I was alarmed to learn that the Bolsterstone Fayre will not be taking place this year. A traditional event first held back in 1913. I hope this does not mean the fayre will end altogether and 2025 will see the event return to the local calendar.

Celebrating 70 years of Peak District National Park rangers

Peak District rangers returned to their roots to mark their 70th anniversary.

As part of the celebrations, National Park rangers recreated a photograph taken outside Edale’s Old Nags Head pub, where the original service was launched on Good Friday, 16th April 1954.

The Peak District was the UK’s original national park – designated on 17th April 1951 – and led the way with the creation of what would become the country’s first ranger service.

Tom Tomlinson was appointed the Peak District’s first national park warden in January 1954 and a warden service of part-time volunteers was created three months later.

Peak District National Park Authority chair, Ken Smith, said: “In the first year of the service, there were 500 volunteers, coming out at weekends to look after the countryside, to enforce the byelaws and encourage people to enjoy the National Park in a responsible way.

“In many respects, the role of rangers today is not that different to what it was 70 years ago. Rangers have a salutary role, encouraging people to do the right thing in the countryside.”

Ranger team manager Andy Farmer added: “I’ve always been very proud to work with the ranger service. We play a vital role, serving the interests of the place, our communities and our visitors.”

In the early days of the service, warden briefings took place in the Old Nags Head, Edale, where landlord and access campaigner Fred Heardman had also set up the Peak District’s first information service in the snug.

Over the years, the role of wardens developed to include wider engagement, including leading walks, conservation and safety work. The term ‘ranger’ was first used during the 1980s.

PACT offers emotional and practical support to the children and the families of children who are undergoing treatment for cancer or leukaemia at Sheffield Children's Hospital on Ward 6. PACT own a house close to the hospital which provides a 'home from home' where families can stay overnight, use the cooking facilities or just go for a little bit of time to themselves whilst their child is receiving treatment at the hospital.

PACT also provides breakfast and lunch to parents on Ward 6 as they are often unable to leave their children to go and buy food. They also arrange

trips throughout the year - including a theme park trip, bowling and a Christmas party.

£1000 will enable them to continue giving this amazing support to children suffering from cancer and their families.

It is reported that on Saturday 30 March at 8.20pm at The Old Grindstone Pub, Crookes, a man was struck on the head and suffered injuries to his head which are not believed to be life-threatening. It is then reported that the suspect fled the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing but officers are keen to identify the man in the images as they may be able to assist with enquiries. He is described as a white man, of medium stocky build, around 5ft 10in tall and with short brown hair.

MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY INSPIRATION

Sheffield man hopes to “save lives” by creating his own charity centred around mental health

A Sheffield man has been inspired to create his own mental health charity after losing his friend to suicide and dealing with his own mental health, writes Angela Garcia.

Jojo Quattrocchi named his charity Amarelo, which means yellow in Portuguese, and aims to give people alternative tools to cope with their mental health.

He said: “It just became a passion of mine to try and create something around mental health.”

He hopes to create a space of trust and give people the tools he himself has learned to cope with his mental health.

Through the Amarelo charity, Jojo hopes to save lives and highlight alternative methods of coping such as yoga, meditation, spirituality and spending time in nature.

He said “I know how horrendous it is and how your mind is poorly and you can get better but it is very easy to give in, if I didn’t have the support around me I could quite easily not be here right now.”

“I want to transform my pain into something positive and help people who are at that stage that I was a few years ago.”

He also said how mental health is a very big spectrum and you can be doing everything right and still feel depressed or anxious, and people can get better but a lot has to do with not getting the right diagnosis or treatment.

He said: “Mental health is very difficult to treat and we need more groups and hopefully Amarelo will be my own way to help people.”

The charity is still at it’s early stages, but Mr Quattrocchi aims to get his charity registered and get funding from Sheffield City Council and the government in London.

Although it is taking much longer than he anticipated, his focus right now is to get the charity’s website online. Jojo has spent the last few months working on this project and he said the project is very valuable to him.

Through his website, he hopes to direct people to spaces that would help them to get better and share his personal story to encourage others.

He plans to launch the Amarelo website in May during National Mental Health week.

STUTTERING START

Stocksbridge 82 all out With the 2nd XI's fixture away to Scholes and Harley cancelled due to the weather, the 1st XI's fixture at home to Silkstone was the last remaining tie.

Newly appointed captain Jake Vickers won the toss and elected to field. The wicket looked green but good and Stocksbridge were hopeful of early breakthroughs. Vickers did exactly that, removing the dangerous Wade early on.

When the ever-reliable Andy Hibbert joined the party, removing Walker for 1, Silkstone were floundering at 15-2.

However, opening batsman Atkinson scored an excellent 55, supported by Linton Shore who scored a run a ball 34, enabling Silkstone to post a competitive total of 165 from their 46 overs.

Andy Hibbert was the man to do the damage with the ball, with 5 for 43 from his 11 overs. Skipper Jake Vickers 2-38 and Ant Barnes 1-24,

also picked up the wickets, along with a run out. Chris Lowe bowled well and very economically, with his 12 overs going for just 20.

New recruit James Tevendale also impressed on debut, however Silkstone's total was probably 30-40 runs higher than the 1sts would've hoped.

Unfortunately, the 1st's batting response got off to a terrible start, with wickets falling early and often.

Stocksbridge had no answer to Silkstone bowler, Rossi who claimed career-best figures of 8-42 for the visitors. Only Jack Murfin and Andy Hibbert reached double figures, with the pair both reaching 19. Stocksbridge could only muster 82 all out in an opening-day defeat. Not the start to the season the 1sts had hoped for but it's a long season ahead.

ULTRA, MUD, RAIN AND RIVERS

This past week was a little quieter compared to recent weeks. First we had 4 runners brave the river crossing twice on Monday night for the 2nd of the Trunce race series. The Trunce is a series of off-road races that takes place throughout the year starting in Oxspring. The race route is just over 4 miles and involves three river crossings and about 400 ft of climb and descent.

Tim Daniell was first back for the club in 39:03, new member Matt Allen in 46:57 and Jolene Allen in 48:09 and Heather Lindley finished in 50:18.

Saturday Jonathan Page headed down south to do the Chiltern Ridge Ultra, An iconic ultra in the Chilterns, traversing the stunning ridgeline trails between Ivinghoe Beacon and Whiteleaf Hill. and finished 56th in 5:27:00. Sunday

was the annual Dronfield 10K, a popular local 10K. We had just the one runner taking part, Charlotte Carr, who despite the heavy wind and rain bagged herself a brand new personal best in 49:23.

Finally, Rachel Howard represented the club at the first Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix Trail Series and despite the very muddy conditions came away with 3rd place in her age category. A good way to put Stocksbridge on the map!

This week we start to expand our club nights. As well as our regular Monday night run from Bracken Moor Stadium (10K & 8K groups in around 65 mins) we are hosting track nights at Woodburn Rd in Sheffield on a Tuesday night and starting at 6pm from the Band Stand at Fox Valley on a Thursday another social run of 10K in around 65 - 70 minutes. Valley Hill runners do Dronfield 10K

The heavens opened and didn't stop at Dronfield 10k on Sunday. Valley hill runners were there to join in the fun even though they all felt like going back to the car and driving back home the runners all started on the line and all finished in very good times. Steve Sansom was the first male and Jayne Grayson was the first female back.

Damien conquers lakes challenge

After nine years of preparation and planning

Penistone runner Damien Briscoe completed the notoriously tough Bob Graham Round challenge at the weekend.

The challenge involves traversing a circuit of 42 peaks within a 24 hour period covering 66 miles and a total of 27,000 feet of climbing.

Damien completed the challenge in 23 hours and 36 minutes and was supported by a group of family and friends along the way. He described the challenge as the hardest thing he had done in his life.

Closer to home it was a busy week of racing with

three races taking place during the week. Monday saw the second of the Trunce series take place near Oxspring.

Penistone performed well with notable performances from George Parr (2nd overall and 2nd in male category), Alan Knox (2nd over70 man), Lesley Parker (3rd over40 lady) and Finn Pepper (3rd in the junior race).

Wednesday saw the Hartcliff Hill race take place over a new route around Hartcliff near Langsett.

George Parr followed up his second place in the Trunce with another second place behind winner Phil Montgomery.

On Thursday the year’s first Silkstone Shuffle took place and Suzanne McGill showed she had recovered well from the London Marathon to grab first place in the ladies race. Damian Kilpin fared well in the men’s race picking up third place and teammate Dan Hague was not far behind in 5th. Dean Allcroft completed the 44 mile Wolds Rangers Way in a time of just over nine hours to give him 31st place in a field of 90 starters. On the parkrun scene there were first places for James Fryers (Jesmond Dean), George Parr (Penistone) and Suzanne McGill (Penistone). Age graded runners of the week were Dawn Broom (90.61%), Suzanne McGill (80.00%), John Broom (77.13%), Rachael Mayston (76.71%) and George Parr (75.44%).

STEELS SEASON ENDS WITH A DRAW

Stocksbridge Park Steels played out a 0-0 draw with Dunston UTS at Bracken Moor in their final Northern Premier League East Division game of the season on Saturday.

The players had the end-of-season presentation straight after the game, where this season's stand-out player Charlie Oglesby took three of the prizes, Jack Watson young player and goalkeeper Ben Townsend winning the others.

Three consecutive stalemates saw the Steels end the season with 40 points, finishing 15th in the table.

Manager Ian Richards said after the game “We were excellent, and created some really good chances but failed to convert any. We played some really good football and got lots of crosses into the box.”

CHURCH RESERVES SECURE LEAGUE TITLE

Last Monday Dodworth Miners’ Welfare lost their game at Oughtibridge War Memorial FC meaning that Penistone Church Reserves could be confirmed as the EV Sportswear County Senior Premier Division Champions for 2024.

However, there was still business to be done and that meant a home game against South Kirkby Colliery on Saturday.

A very healthy crowd of 153 saw Church Reserves narrowly beat their opponents two-one thanks to a goal just after halftime from Reece High and an injury-time penalty from Brad Kemp.

Manager Tom Wright took time out from the celebrations to say.

I’m so happy we’ve done it, we’ve deserved it, there’s no other way to say that, we’ve just won twelve games in a row with twenty games unbeaten, we’ve lost one game all the season which was the first game but I was confident in the players. Everything I expected of those lads they’ve just gone above and beyond it to win this league.

They’ve won more, they’ve lost less, they’ve nearly scored more than anybody else but what they have done is defended so well, we’ve conceded just thirteen goals, we’ve been fitter, we’ve been better and we’ve been absolutely solid all season.

The changing room, the atmosphere, everything about this squad of players that we have built has been absolutely unbelievable.

Striker Ryan Hallsworth added

It’s a proud day for the club, that changing room that I have been involved in this year has been the best. We haven’t just won the league we’ve comfortably won it. It’s a really proud day for the club and hopefully, we can keep most of our players together for next year but we may lose a couple to the first team because they’ve played so well. I took my daughter on the pitch to celebrate and to be photographed with everybody else it was an absolute class day. My missus thinks that I’m

retiring but after today but I might want to go again. I love this club. I’ve played at different clubs and this club is special.

Penistone Church have been members of the County senior league since it formed in 1982. I’ve played in it, managed in it and for the last 33 years been secretary in it without ever winning the premier division until now. I am very proud and happy.

in the world but it takes over everything but when you win a league it’s worth it.
