Man with a Pram
The ‘Man with a Pram’ who recently surpassed the £1 Million fundraising milestone and received a National TV Award is sharing his achievements with the people of Sheffield.
A GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Joshua's family and funeral costs raised over £6,660 in just a single day. www.gofundme.com/f/joshua-patrick-atkins
John Burkhill will be displaying his ‘Pride of Britain’ Award in the centre of Sheffield in the Winter Gardens.
Tributes on the page have been left by well-wishers with condolences for his friends and family. The page by organiser Debbie Beeley reads: "This is a fundraising page for Josh's family who tragically lost their son at 17 years of age due to a tragic car accident.
John said “As you all know, I was so proud to be able to bring The Pride of Britain Awards award back to Sheffield, and all of our wonderful people. I wanted everyone to have the chance to be able to see the award, as lots of you have asked. We have a spot for it in the winter gardens which we will be doing an unveiling on 28th November, more details to follow. I hope to see some of you there.”
"Josh was a vibrant teenager who lived life to the full and had an impact on many people's lives. "This is a very difficult time for the family and we want to alleviate any financial burden." No one has been arrested in connection to the crash. Two other males in the car, aged 17 and 18, were taken to hospital. The 18-year-old suffered serious injuries. Anyone with information about the collision or who saw the vehicle prior to the crash is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 1,083 of November 11.

Penistone Line On Track for
£48 Million Upgrade Local MP Miriam Cates has welcomed the announcement of a huge £48 million investment to improve the Penistone Line between Huddersfield and Sheffield, secured thanks to the campaigning of three Conservative MPs along the route.
"There have been some reliability issues on the Penistone Line recently, and whilst these upgrades will make a big difference, I'm also calling on the train operators to do what is necessary now to give passengers the reliable service they deserve.
The funding has been awarded as part of the Government’s Levelling Up agenda – delivering much-needed funding and investment to areas in need of economic development, and will form a part of the recently-announced Network North programme of rail investments.
"This announcement follows recent good news about funding to restore passenger services on the Don Valley Line between Sheffield and Stocksbridge. Improving public transport connectivity is one of my top priorities, so I'm pleased to be delivering major investment across all parts of my constituency through these two projects."
The project will be the first phase of a programme of track and station upgrades, leading to significant improvements in the performance and reliability of services. Miriam Cates, MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, commented, "I’m delighted that we’ve succeeded in securing the funding to start upgrading Penistone Line. This is fantastic news for people across Penistone, Silkstone and Dodworth who will benefit from a significant improvement in the local rail service. "The Government has rightly recognised the importance of this line and is investing in levelling up transport connectivity here in South Yorkshire. This is something I’ve been campaigning for since I was elected and I know it will be welcomed across our community.
Labour candidate launches fight to save local train service
Marie Tidball, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Penistone and Stocksbridge, has launched a campaign to save an evening rail service between Huddersfield and Sheffield as part of timetable changes in December. Northern Rail has announced plans to remove the 1751 train between Huddersfield
and Sheffield from 10th December, impacting residents across Penistone and Stocksbridge.
Dodworth and Chapletown. She has also launched a petition to stop the cuts to local train services.
Marie has written to the Managing Director of Northern Rail urgently calling for them to reconsider the move which will cause detriment to those living and working in Penistone, Silkstone Common,
Marie Tidball said: “Yet again we’re facing chaos on our rail network. This train service is vital to local people and those living in surrounding towns and villages that use these stations. This is coming at a terrible time, in the lead-up to Christmas local businesses will lose out as travel to local high streets and town centres is made more difficult, and plans to see family and friends are disrupted. “I urge Network Rail to reconsider this terrible decision as quickly as possible. “Only Labour will put passengers back at the heart of our railways and deliver a better deal for taxpayers by bringing rail back into public ownership as contracts expire, with every decision tested against delivering for the passenger.”

Girls Illuminate Hillsborough Park for Children In Need
...Continued from front page Deepcar St John’s Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides came together in a dazzling display of support for Children In Need, raising over £500 with a Glow Plod for Pudsey in Hillsborough Park. In a vibrant spectacle, the girls illuminated the park with their glowing attire, adding a splash of colour to the night as they undertook laps for a charitable cause. The event not only contributed to a great cause but also provided a joyful experience for the participants.
The funding comes after a “track record” of action from three local MPs in Dewsbury, Colne Valley and Penistone & Stocksbridge to call for this upgrade, including questions in Parliament to the Prime Minister, the Transport Secretary and meetings with the Rail Minister, as well securing the support of local councillors, campaigners and community groups for bid. The project is being led by Kirklees Council in collaboration with Barnsley Council and the South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authorities who are responsible for the local transport networks in the two counties.
23rd November 2023
Cheered on by their parents and leaders, the young fundraisers showcased their community spirit as they completed their laps with enthusiasm. The Glow Plod for Pudsey not only brought attention to the importance of supporting Children In Need but also demonstrated the unity and commitment of the Deepcar St John’s Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides. The funds raised will go towards supporting Children In Need's mission to make a positive difference in the lives of children facing various challenges.

Dan Walker joins guests at the Roundabout Bangers and Cash auction The cars are home, the drivers are rested and the bonnets have been sold, bringing the final fundraising total for the Roundabout Bangers and Cash 2023 challenge to an outstanding £152,843. Bangers and Cash is the motoring adventure that this year saw 21 teams undertake the 1092-mile European journey from Sheffield to Munich in old vehicles to raise funds for Roundabout, the South Yorkshire youth housing charity that provides shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
The auction was split into three sections in between courses, with David Grey MBE as auctioneer. David had also taken part in the rally as Executive Chairman of city company OSL Group and he placed his own successful bid for his tiger-

accompanied the cars on the journey across Europe.
The evening also saw the premiere of the Bangers and Cash rally film, which was filmed and produced by the charity’s Communication and Social Media Co-ordinator Jasmine Givnan, who
“It was brilliant to see all the bonnets back together in one room again and to see that people appreciated their value by taking part in our auction,” said Roundabout Fundraising Manager Emily Bush. Barnsley College is holding its second Open Day of the year on Wednesday 29 November, 4.00pm to 7.00 pm, following the successes of its first which over 4,500 people attended.
Adding a unique splash of colour to the event, every vehicle had its bonnet designed and decorated by a professional artist - and as the event reached its finale with an auction dinner where all the bonnets were auctioned, along with 40 painted road signs.
Rated outstanding by Ofsted, Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College and Barnsley College University Centre are inviting potential new students to find out about the range of courses on offer including, full and parttime vocational courses, A Levels, apprenticeships, T Levels and universitylevel courses.
BBC Radio Sheffield host Ellie Colton presented the evening at Sheffield’s Crowne Plaza Hotel and among the guests was TV news presenter Dan Walker, who had seen the bonnets during a special display at September’s Art in the Gardens event.

Rally Postponement Amidst Local Concerns The much-anticipated South Yorkshire Stages Rally, scheduled to close 50 roads in the region, has been officially postponed by the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club, the event's organisers.
All types of contact lenses
The Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) campus
The decision is believed to be in response to a surge in objections submitted to the local authority, prompting the organisers to reconsider their plans. Last week, the Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club released a statement, stating, "In light of a number of objections submitted to the local authority this week, we have made the decision to cancel the first-ever South Yorkshire Stages Rally, due to take place on 10th December 2023. We are committed to community engagement for this event and have taken seriously the concerns raised by some of the residents in the area." The announcement disappointed many, including Member of Parliament Miriam Cates, who had earlier expressed excitement about the rally. Cates, who played a prominent role in unveiling the event, expressed her disappointment, saying, "I am disappointed to advise that the South Yorkshire Stages Rally, has been postponed."
Cates highlighted the potential benefits the rally could have brought to the local community, including increased trade for local businesses, a boost in tourism, and the thrill of hosting an international event. She acknowledged the significant public support the rally had garnered and commended the extensive engagement efforts undertaken by the organisers. "I was reassured by the huge engagement work undertaken, all homes on the route were visited twice, and when residents were out, letters were provided. So, after two years and countless hours of work by all those involved, as said, I am disappointed, but I understand that the organiser has made clear they will continue to engage with local people on future plans," Cates added. Despite the setback, Cates paid tribute to everyone involved, including Barnsley Council, local councillors, volunteers, the sponsor (White's Bakery), potential drivers, and their teams. She emphasised that the rally's postponement did not mark the end of the engagement process and expressed hope that future plans would address the concerns raised by local residents.

Council Statement: Removal fencing in Hillsborough Park We know how important Hillsborough Park is to residents, which is why we have been working with Tramlines to restore the park to its usual high quality and return it for community use following this year’s Tramlines Music Festival. I am really pleased to see that the majority of the fence lines have now come down and most of the park is now open once again for public use. I would like to thank the Tramlines and Council teams for their hard work in restoring the park,
of
and importantly, the local community and Hillsborough Park users for their patience and understanding whilst work took place. I remain confident that the Tramlines team will continue to carry out repairs to the highest standard so local people can enjoy the park to the fullest. Councillor Richard Williams, Chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee
More re Kay Kay-ing In answer to Jim Croft’s letter last week in which he claimed Kay Kay Night is simply from ‘caking’ in turn from ‘soul cakes’: this is a later and different Christian custom, that used to be on the opposite side of the calendar before it was moved so as to Christianise the ancient ‘Celtic’ new year festival (the start of the ‘dark year’ on November 1). ‘All Soul’s Day’ ‘soul cakes’ were actually bread with currants, completely different to the parkin customary on Kay Kay night (‘parkin’ being a mangling of a Gaelic word for ‘cake’). Kay Kay Night in Stannington was called Kakin, this spelling insisted on by the locals and that it was nothing to do with cake. Their insistence is telling. Kay Kay or Kakin is from an ancient word meaning ‘evil spirits’; their placation being what Kay Kay Night is all about after they have done their worst the night before, on the last day of the ‘light year’. I did explain all this a few weeks ago in these pages. [For a full account see www.stevemoxon.co.uk/gaelic-festival-vestiges Steve Moxon

People from the Stocksbridge community and further afield gathered at the popular shopping centre to see stunning performances from locally-based Branching Out Dancing Class, followed by a set from popular Sheffield vocalist and musician Graham Lindley. Following the entertainment, Laura and Becky of The Laura and Becky Show, led the excited crowds in a countdown before the festive lights were switched on at 6pm by councillor Mark Whittaker, the Mayor of Stocksbridge, alongside Colin and Susan Ross, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Sheffield. Under the night sky and surrounded by the illuminations, the Spark Drummers then took centre stage to provide the grand finale in closing the event with an extraordinary performance which combined high-impact drumming, dynamic choreography and beautiful lighting designs.
Earlier in the day, visitors made the most of a festive market with local traders selling all different kinds of baked goodies, sweets, handmade Christmas gifts and trinkets. Complementing the market, a street food area also proved popular with visitors including hog roast, crepes, snow cones, Greek Gyros and a BBQ unit. There was also a bar at the centre for visitors to enjoy a mulled wine with the entertainment as well as traditional fairground attractions that children enjoyed. Shoppers also got the chance to take advantage of the Black Friday Warm Up Weekend at Sandersons Boutique Store, while many other shops including top brands such as Mountain Warehouse and Go Outdoors, also stayed open late. Black Friday sales will continue at the shopping centre this week. And the festive fun is set to continue at Fox Valley with many more events planned in the lead up to Christmas. A festive market will be held on Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, between 10am and 3pm.

Hoping to arrest their 4-match losing run in the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition, and begin to climb the league ladder from 12th position. Missing some first choice selections through injury and unavailability, Head Coach Andy Lawrence was still able to select a competitive starting lineup, with a mixture of youthful enthusiasm and experience in the ranks. Stocksbridge made just about the worst start possible, with just two minutes on the clock, Club Captain Adam Frith got caught at the bottom of a ruck and fell awkwardly, twisting his ankle in the process, and despite Medic Charlotte Hale-Watts’ best efforts, he was unable to take any further part in the game, and had to be replaced by the veteran playmaker Ricky Christopherson. This clearly ruffled the visitors and Knottingley pounced to register their 1st converted try of the afternoon. Winger Tom Kerr then pulled a hamstring and he too was forced from the field, to be replaced by the bustling Jon Saddington. Despite some enterprising play, with Beale, O’Leary
and Jack Martin heavily involved, Stocksbridge were unable to unlock the home defence, and the heavier, bulkier Knottingley side used their advantage to register a further try on the stroke of halftime.
Fullback Saddington then received a yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin bin for leading with his elbow, but still, the plucky Stocksbridge side gave it their all. With time running out, a clearly tiring Stocksbridge defence creaked again as the home side scored their 4th and bonus point try, with some good interpassing of their own. Afterwards, stand in skipper Beale reflected ‘this was a decent performance against a tough, top 3 opposition and we stood up well, especially the younger element, ‘ before adding, ‘the injuries are catching up with us and we just need a break of luck to record our next victory’. The victory will not be far away, if the squad maintain their commitment and effort levels.

Church took a one-nil lead thanks to first-half goal from Antony Brown (pictured), the lead would have been more but for an outstanding performance from Goole keeper Luke Chadwick and on two occasions the woodwork. After the restart Goole rallied but the hope of any recovery for them was thwarted by two quick goals around the hour mark by Nathan Keightley and another from Ant Brown. Co-manager John Whitehead We definitely got back to a Penistone Church performance today. Some of our football at was excellent and it’s nice to see what we’ve worked on in training coming into fruition.

Stocksbridge, to their credit, never stopped trying and never took a backwards step in the face of some intimidating play from their hosts, and the evergreen Ricky Christopherson produced the pay of the day with a superb reverse spin pass to Spencer at outside half, whilst looking the ‘other’ way. Class is permanent.

Valley hill runners sent a team to Gainsborough 10k on Sunday. For some of the ladies running this event it was their first time trying a 10k. Thanks to Wendy Duggan, the coach at VHR who's taken this group of ladies on helping them to achieve much more with their running as some of them have only just started running. Jayne Grayson Club Secretary said “We are so proud of them.Sarah Turton.Shirley Harper.Hayley Wednesday Adams.Beth Louise.Alison Barker.Cat Duffin.Wendy Richardson..
For the first ten or fifteen minutes of the second half Goole had their fair share of possession they put it on us a little bit and caused us to make mistakes, fortunately, they didn’t cost us today. We’ve been in the position not too long ago where sustained pressure has
probably resulted in us conceding possession and conceding goals but today the defence were resolute. Ant Brown was excellent, Nathan Keightley got his goal and again Tom Brennan has been excellent, he put his body on the line today with his heading, and tackling. Jordan Coduri was always in the right place at the right time. Every single player who has worn the black and white shirt today, from number one to seventeen, has had an impact on the game, done it for the club, for themselves and for their team mates. We’re really happy with that as a management team We’ll work on stuff again in training on Wednesday and we’ll take it all into the Golcar game at home next Saturday Forthcoming Fixture: Saturday 25th November Penistone Church v Golcar United KO 3 pm

Busy weekend for footpath runners Penistone runners were in action across the country over the weekend over a variety of distances and surfaces. The third and penultimate South Yorkshire Cross Country fixture took place at a rainy Winterhill in Rotherham. Ruby Sykes had an excellent run in the ladies open category claiming second place after being in third for a good proportion of the race. Kai Sunman had a good run in the men’s open race grabbing another top-ten finish. Three runners made the trip north to take part in the Tadcaster 10-mile road race and all three had excellent runs. Rachael Mayston’s time of 1-11-49 was enough to break the club ladies' over-50 record for the distance. Andrew Heppenstall dipped under the hour mark to claim second place in the men’s over40 category in 59-04. Finally Martin Ball was fourth in the men’s over-50 age category in 1-02-31. Nine runners took part in the Gainsborough and Morton 10k in Lincolnshire. First back was Rob Lees in 38-08 which gave him fourth place in the men’s over45 age category. The first
