MP UNDER INVESTIGATION Conservative MP Miriam Cates has been placed under investigation by Parliament's standards watchdog, writes Julia Bryson for BBC News.
It is not known exactly what the investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards relates to.
Ms Cates was elected as MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, South Yorkshire, in 2019.
However, it is claimed she caused "significant damage to the reputation of the House as a whole, or of its members generally".
for assault CHILD TAKEN TO HOSPITAL AND 12YEAR-OLD ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED ASSAULT NEAR SCHOOL
Police arrested a 12-year-old after a girl was taken to hospital after an altercation near a school in Sheffield A 13-year-old girl was taken to hospital with head injuries, which were not believed to be life-threatening. After a suspected assault by another girl near to Ecclesfield School, South Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service were sent to Ecclesfield to deal with the incident. Police said one girl, aged 13, was injured in what has been described as an ‘altercation’ on a field near Ecclesfield School, just before 9am, with another child, aged 12, arrested on suspicion of assault. The 12-year-old girl who was arrested on suspicion of assault has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
The details of investigations by the Standards Commissioner, Daniel Greenberg, are kept confidential until the inquiry is concluded and those under investigation are barred from discussing the allegations. Ms Cates is part of the New Conservatives group, which has called for radical measures to cut migration. She has been outspoken in her concern about declining fertility rates in Britain, calling for policies to promote marriage and having children. She is one of eight MPs currently being investigated by the standards commissioner, including Deputy Speaker Dame Eleanor Laing, veteran conservative Sir Bernard Jenkin, and Reclaim MP Andrew Bridgen.

Joint Operation Targets Christmas Drink Drivers and Speeders
DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE - POLICE
In a collaborative effort, the police teams from Stocksbridge & Stannington and Walkley & Hillsborough joined forces this past week to crack down on Christmas drink drivers and speeding vehicles. The initiative was part of Sheffield's Operation Blitzen and South Yorkshire Police's Operation Limit, aimed at ensuring road safety during the festive season. On Wednesday, December 13th, the two teams conducted static stop sites at two locations: Langsett Road North in Oughtibridge and Penistone Road, outside Hillsborough Park. Officers equipped with speed detection devices identified vehicles exceeding speed limits, while others randomly selected vehicles for inspection.

During the operation, drivers stopped for moving road traffic offences, such as speeding, underwent automatic breath testing. Randomly selected vehicles were breathalysed only if additional grounds justified requesting a sample or if the drivers volunteered. Due to the nature of such operations, the check sites were active for approximately 30 minutes each to minimise the risk of advanced warning. Nevertheless, the teams reported the following results: Langsett Road North: 19 vehicles stopped 5 drivers breathalysed, all returning negative results
1 driver advised regarding speeding after testing negative for alcohol Penistone Road: 15 vehicles stopped 5 breathalysed, all with negative results 1 driver reported for excess speed, recorded at 42mph Law enforcement authorities emphasised their commitment to ongoing efforts, conducting ad-hoc stop sites at various dates, times, and locations. The message was clear: "DO NOT drink and drive, risking the loss of your license, job, or worse, endangering yourself or others." Motorists were urged to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety measures during the holiday season.

College feeds 150 students during the festive break Students at Barnsley College can discreetly pick up one of 150 food packs to support them over the festive season in the face of the cost-of-living crisis. For the second year running the college has brought back ‘The Pantry’, a hub where donations can be made, and students can collect a pack if needed. The project was so successful in assisting students last year, it was deemed necessary to bring it back to help those who may need it during the Christmas break. Research conducted by the Post Office* found that 61 percent of people are worried about the expense of putting food on the table this Christmas, which prompted the college to begin collecting non-perishable food in October, ensuring enough supplies were available. Collection boxes were in each department which saw hundreds of items donated, including a large donation from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre. The college received several donations from local businesses, including 15 selection boxes from Tesco Stairfoot, 15 selection boxes from Tesco Hoyland and £450
in supermarket vouchers from Balmoral Tanks in Thurnscoe. Students from the college's Sixth Form wrote Christmas cards to include in each food pack. Inside each card was a Wentworth Castle Gardens admission voucher, donated by the National Trust. Each student collecting a food pack also has the option to collect a hygiene pack, containing items such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, shampoo, and body wash. Sasha Foyster, Learner Voice Adviser within Student Services who led the collection, said: “Following the success and support for last year's food collection and the continuous rise in food prices, we decided that The Pantry needed to return to support students over the Christmas break. “With help from departments across the college, we identified students that needed support over Christmas, and we ensured packages were either taken to outlying sites or students could come discreetly and pick up a parcel.”

Protest at “shocking” lack of pharmacy cover
– patients waiting a week for prescriptions A Stocksbridge beauty salon owner has spoken out about the problems people in the area have in getting their prescriptions – a situation described as “shocking” by one GP. Kathryn Giles-Bowman, who runs Oceanic Beauty Salon on Manchester Road, launched an online petition to campaign for better pharmacy coverage in Stocksbridge and Deepcar after customers told her of the problems they face, writes Julia Armstrong, Local Democracy Reporter. These include a lack of pharmacists to dispense prescriptions, leading to a wait of up to seven days, and almost no local weekend coverage. The situation got so bad for her elderly and more vulnerable customers that the beautician had considered driving people to Boots at Meadowhall, she told a meeting of Sheffield health and Wellbeing Board on, Thursday December 7. “I shouldn’t have to do that but I was willing to do that because the provision isn’t there,” she said.
The board, made up of Sheffield City Council members and officials and NHS representatives, agreed to set up a meeting with Ms Giles-Bowman and other concerned locals to discuss what might be done. However, Sheffield City Council director of public health, Greg Fell, said that his staff are unable to undertake extra pharmacy service reviews because they are already overstretched. Ms Giles-Bowman said that online and paper petitions have been signed by 182 people. She said that Stocksbridge and Deepcar have a population of 14,000 people, a quarter of who are over 65 in a hilly area at the edge of Sheffield that makes it more difficult for vulnerable people to access services. She said there are three pharmacies locally but the nearest 24-hour service is at the Wicker Pharmacy 9.7 miles away. It is not served by a local bus service and a taxi trip there and back would cost around £40.
Over 80 BEDS and MATTRESSES on DISPLAY
One local pharmacy opens on Saturdays from 9am-noon but not every weekend. She said: “Somebody who is older, more vulnerable, has no family, has no transport doesn’t have the availability to get the prescriptions that they need.” She said that one pharmacy attached to a Deepcar GP surgery often will not open until 10am, leaving people with a long wait after earlier doctor’s appointments. Another makes people wait their turn outside in the street. Board chair Dr Zak McMurray read from a written response that said services are regularly reviewed and there had been no recent complaints from GPs or patients in Stocksbridge or Deepcar. There had also been no notice that pharmacies had changed opening hours.

Two charged for burglary in Hillsborough
A 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been charged following a series of burglaries in Hillsborough. Shaun Tavernor, of Holme Lane, Sheffield, and a 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have been charged with burglary. On 28 March and 2 April, it is reported that forced entry was made to four business premises at the Hillsborough Barracks Shopping Mall. It is reported that an amount of cash and computer equipment were stolen from the premises. Tavernor and the 16-year-old boy have been bailed and will appear before Sheffield Magistrates' Court on 17 January 2024.
Thief jailed following burglary
A thief who cruelly targeted an elderly and vulnerable woman has been jailed. On 2 August at 1.10am, 50-year-old Lee Green targeted the home of an elderly woman on Nelson Road, in the Stannington area. Green broke into the property and stole a bag containing a purse and money.

Wendy takes to the greens for Sheffcare golfing challenge Fore! It’s never too late to get on the greens and practice your swing as Wendy Jackson proved when she teed off for a special day of sporting exercise at Hillsborough Golf Club. Wendy is a resident at Midhurst Road Residential Care home in Fox Hill, one of the group of homes operated across the city by charity Sheffcare. And it is also one of the homes that has been taking part in a new project which was launched earlier this year on the greens at nearby Hillsborough Golf Club by the UKRI Healthy Ageing Challenge, aiming to help people remain active, productive, independent and socially connected across generations for as long as possible. Free taster sessions are offered to people living with a range of conditions, includ-
ing dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke, loneliness, and depression. No previous golf experience is needed and the majority of participants have never picked up a club before attending a session. “We are delighted that we have been able to offer residents like Wendy this wonderful opportunity to develop a new skill,” said Midhurst Road manager Joe Hughes. “The benefits of exercise are well documented and at Sheffcare we believe in maintaining a healthy and independent lifestyle for all our residents wherever possible. “It was great to see Wendy taking on a new sporting challenge and are sure that other residents will now be keen to follow her lead and take to the greens.”

A Christmas Wish
Your Letters

God’s gift to us did not cost money

A Christmas Wish that I would make
He gave us his son to redeem everybody.
Is not that we could all at cake
We forget his message at our peril,
Just that each and everyone
Natures resources like an expanding bubble
Never need to feel alone
Is used by commerce to meet greed’s worst.
That justice ,trust,truth and love
The day will come when the bubble will burst.
Caking & Caking Night
Would fall like Manna from above
But without Christ’s hope, how will we cope?
For where is the justice in this world of plenty
There’ll be no joy for you cant’ buy back years of waste
I read with interest the recent letters about Caking in particular Jim Croft’s letter (9 December 2023) about the origins of the Cakin night custom.
When the majority feed from a plate near empty. Where are trust and truth with out love's light To show the way out of poverty's blight. Sheila Gent aged 90
A very big thank you to everyone who attended the concert in St. Mary’s with Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir and Deepcar Brass Band on Saturday 16 December. Your generosity in contributing to retiring collection raised a staggering £629 for the homeless in Sheffield which we know will be greatly received and much appreciated. Many thanks again from all the organisers.
Be still and listen Be still and listen, what do you hear? Christ’s message of joy, hope, new life so dear? For thousands of years we’ve heard the tale
Or replace earth’s bounty depleted in haste. It will only take a little self will To resist the urge of the demanding till. If once again Christ’s message we hear We can face the future without any fear Because of this joy of that ancient birth, New life we hope will survive on earth. Sheila Gent aged 90
Best Wishes Having been a Town and City Councillor for a number of years now in the Stocksbridge and Upper Don ward, I have always been grateful for the help of so many volunteers across our community. We are fortunate to have so many local people give their time and expertise to provide such a wide range of helpful and important services to our community.
He said “Love one another, your enemy too” He meant everyone whatever skin’s hue.
As the year comes to an end, while wishing
Until truth obscured by clanging till Was trodden down by commercial will.
Runners donate to Food Bank
Valley hill runners have been taking part in the national foodbank runs. As a group members have been really supportive and donated many bags to St Saviour's church at High Green. Times are tough for everyone and sadly food banks are needed more than ever, members felt as a running group they wanted to play a small part in helping to stock the shelves over Christmas. Jayne Grayson said “Thanks to all members who helped with the collection you are brilliant.. Pictured: Jayne and Chris with the treasurer of St Saviors food bank..
I was born and brought up in Stannington and as a teenager during the 1960s I well remember the Cakin tradition where school-age children went from door to door singing the Cakin song to encourage residents to come out, try to guess the ‘cakers’ identity and then give money ‘for the guy’ for bonfire night. The song in the Stannington village area went.. Cake cake copper copper cake cake If you haven’t got a penny, a half penny will do
‘trick or treat’. It’s rather sad that a well-loved local tradition has lost out to a commercial practice.
Dear Look Local
But I note that in Peter Machan’s excellent book ‘Loxley. Wanderings in a Curious Valley’ (ISBN 978-1-913962-4), on page 108 he quotes the above words BUT with a change in order of words in the first line to “Cake copper copper cake copper copper”
Yours sincerely R J Bramall, Greystones.
How many tens of thousands of people are there in the Stockbridge and Penistone parliamentary constituency? Next question.. . how many will be affected by a female footballer who was once a man? How much time should our elected representative paid from our money spent on this issue ? We need buses to get us to work and ambulances to arrive promptly at traumatic emergencies. We need to not need food banks. We need to be able to afford average housing on an average income. We do not need protection from things perceived as threats by a right wing evangelical. We need a general election . Yours Peter Morton Hunshelf Park
If you haven’t got a half penny Then God Bless you
Our volunteers have been busier than ever over the last year, due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, and it has been good to see some volunteer organisations adapt to offer new forms of support that have made a real positive difference to so many people.

THANK YOU Bolsterstone Community Group Committee would like to thank everyone who helped or attended last week’s wreath making evening. There was lots of fun & laughter and everyone took home an amazing, professional-looking wreath. All proceeds go towards the upkeep and planting of the village.
I’d be interested to know what words were sung in the Stocksbridge / Deepcar area? The Cakin tradition was also a feature of Stannington village pub life and Cakin night fancy dress competitions were held in some of the pubs with the Crown & Glove (Top House) and the Robin Hood at Little Matlock being the main ones. The tradition has died out with the growth of
Chapeltown on top WB Pheasant 0-2 Chapeltown RBL
In difficult conditions at Chaucer School, Chapeltown RBL came away with 3 points in the last game of 2023 - to see them top of the tree for Christmas.
Legion got on top and doubled the lead as Phillips chipped the keeper from outside the area to wrap up the points and score his 10th goal in 10 games.
Strong winds and an uneven pitch meant it wasn’t pleasant viewing with neither side able to get the ball down and play in a goalless first half.
Lewis Fox and the RBL back 4 defended well and made sure of a clean sheet as well as 3 points, with Joe Long even completing 85 minutes.
Full back Jacob Walkland opened the scoring on the hour after good work from Jed Phillips saw him cross, and Niall Smith flick on for Walkland to finish at the back post.

Twenty six Penistone runners took on the Travellers Six which is a challenging six-mile run with a mix of uphill and downhill sections on quiet rural roads.
Barnsley and Penistone respectively.
First back for the club was Oliver Pike in 30th place in a time of 42-59. First lady back for the club was Suzanne McGill in 48-58. Suzanne’s performance was good enough to give her first place in the ladies over45 age category. Bill Phillips was also in the prizes claiming first place in the men’s over75 age category. His time of 5134 was also a new club record for six mile distance. There were also first places for Barbara Haigh (over75 ladies) and Ray Brown (ovesr80 men).
Andrew Taylor from Penistone has completed 186 parkruns but last weekend Andrew passed his 100 volunteer milestone as tailwalker at the Barnsley parkrun. Andrew mainly volunteers at Barnsley parkrun and Barnsley junior parkrun but has also volunteered at other local and events further afield. He has undertaken many roles including run director, volunteer coordinator, timekeeper, barcode scanner, marshal and tailwalker amongst other roles.
Elsewhere Peter Beever competed in the 4.5 mile Santa Special trail run organised by Kimberworth Striders.

Andrew says “There are roles which mean you have to give up your run once in a while but there are ones which you can get both a run and volunteer credit for example tailwalker, car park marshal, first-timers briefing and token sorting. Junior parkrun volunteer credits also count. Parkrun happens every Saturday at 0900 and junior parkrun every Sunday at

Anger as opponents refuse to play Stocksbridge Running Club are going into with the M60 record as well. David Napier After travelling from Thorne, going through the process of changing & beginning their warm-up, including the toss-up, Thornensians RUFC then decided the Stocksbridge pitch was dangerous & refused to fulfil their Yorkshire 4 Counties round 12 fixture.

Despite the cancellation of the match, the Club’s Christmas Jumper competition went ahead as usual, & was won by Club stalwart Leslie Emmanuel Frith, for a seasonal carrot display, with ex-Chairman Andy Bell runner up with his light show. Flying the flag down south was Andy Gosling at Wycombe Rye parkrun and set a club M35 parkrun record. Big thank you to Molly Hayes who was on pacing duties and helped Victoria to her PB. Plus our club founder was back in action after injury put him out for 3 weeks as he was first Santa back at Hillsborough# Sunday’s star was ultra runner Rachel Vernon who dropped down to the half marathon distance to do the Run Aintree HM and despite the windy conditions, Rachel smashed the clubs HM record with an impressive 1:47:24. Church dissassembled Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church 1-5 Garforth Town Direct and effective football from the visiting Garforth, saw Penistone Church slump to a heavy 5-1 home defeat. Anthony Brown’s 30th-minute strike was all the home side had to show after an ‘abysmal’ display, and the focus now turns to a busy Christmas schedule starting with a home fixture against Hallam FC on Saturday.
Manager Steve Lenthall said “Disappointing to lose 5-1, worst we’ve been all season. We were good for the first 10 minutes, apart from that we were not good enough. Not many positives to take from the game. Abysmal.” Fixtures: Saturday 23rd December 2023 Toolstation NCEL Premier Division Penistone Church v Hallam FC Kick off 3-00 pm

Rawson haulsLiversedge Steels back 2-2 Stocksbridge PS Stocksbridge Park Steels fought back from 2-0 down to claim an impressive point against Liversedge. Rawson’s leveller for the visitors Stocksbridge arrived in the third minute of added time. Liversedge had the better start and created chances early on in the game. Joe Walton forced an early save from Ben Townsend after he got a decent opening while some last-ditch defending prevented the home side from taking the lead a few minutes later. However, the onslaught would eventually pay off. A great cross was sent across the sixyard box and this time Walton was able to beat Townsend from close range. While Stocksbridge did get forward a few times, they were limited to pot shots. It was Liversedge who looked most likely to score the next goal. And after showing plenty of promise with their attacks, they got it. It was good play down the lefthand side which eventually slipped Walton in who was happy to take the chance to get his second of the game. AT THE DOUBLE: Luke Rawson scored twice by Ian Revitt
Stocksbridge did seem out of it but they got some hope at the end of the first half. A free kick was lofted
into the box and the Liversedge goalkeeper Jordan Porter rushed out to try and claim it, almost coming to the edge of the box. This allowed Charlie Oglesby to nod the ball over him to Luke Rawson, who finished simply to get Stocksbridge back into the game. This second half was the reverse of the first, with a Stocksbridge side that didn’t even look recognisable to the first. It was only heroic defending from the Sedge which stopped the Steels from levelling. A low ball from Stocksbridge came from the left and many of the attackers left it, with Tomas Poole coming onto the ball on the righthand side of the box. He lashed the ball and it beat Porter, but a superb sliding challenge from Kurt Harris stopped it.
it fell to Rawson who smashed a shot towards goal. It seemed to take a slight deflection but what mattered is that it went into the bottom corner, giving Stocksbridge a welldeserved point.
