Shocking Statistics show urgent need for action on rental reform, according to Homeless Link.
14,470 households were accepted as owed a main homelessness duty, up 19.0% from April to June 2022
New government statistics released last month show that homelessness is increasing faster than expected. The statutory homelessness statistics for April-June show:-
105,750 households were in temporary accommodation, which is an increase of 10.5% from 30th June 2022
38,810 households were initially assessed as homeless and therefore owed a relief duty, up 6.9% from the same quarter last year. 6,640 households threatened with homelessness due to service of a Section 21 notice to end an Assured Shorthold Tenancy – an increase of 10.3% from the same quarter last year.
Rick Henderson, CEO at Homeless Link, said: “This statistics are shocking. The cost of providing temporary accommodation is crippling local authorities across the country, to the extent that some are filing for bankruptcy and others are on the verge of going under. At the same time, the people living in temporary accommodation, including over one hundred thousand children, too often experience very poor conditions such as overcrowding and severe mould and damp.

museum upgrade Plans have been revealed for upgrades to three Grade II listed buildings at a South Yorkshire museum. Barnsley's Elsecar Heritage Centre was awarded almost £4m by the Arts Council to turn it into an "internationally recognised visitor destination". A planning application has been submitted to revamp two mill buildings and a 19th Century railway station. The station, which is currently a children's nursery, will become "creative workspaces". The site is a former ironworks built in the 1850s. It was purchased by the council in 1988 and turned into a living history centre celebrating the former coal mining area's industrial past. The Victorian buildings also host shops, businesses and studios.

A Former Soldier's Mission to Revitalise Community Hub: The Blue Ball Reopens After 18 Months In a bid to restore the beating heart of the community, Tony Crofts, a 56-year-old former soldier hailing from the small village of Wharncliffe Side, is gearing up to reopen the beloved Blue Ball pub, which has been closed for the past 18 months. The reopening is scheduled for December 15, with an opening night extravaganza commencing at 7 pm. Tony and his enthusiastic team are poised to extend a warm and friendly welcome to all attendees. Guests arriving on this special night can expect a complimentary glass of prosecco as a token of the establishment's commitment to becoming the community's central hub once again. The festivities planned for the opening night include a karaoke session, disco, a delectable free buffet, and an opportunity to meet the new team. Tony is eager to connect with the community and revive the spirit that once made the Blue Ball a cherished part of village life. sourced produce, all meticulously prepared and cooked on-site. Emphasising inclusivity, the Blue Ball aims to be both dog and child-friendly, fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome. Tony expresses his gratitude to Thwaites Brewery for their support in this community initiative. Reflecting on his personal connection to the pub, Tony shared, "I don’t like seeing the pub closed; it has been a part of my life and the village all my life. I even worked there when I was 18 years old. I want to try and get back the community feeling back in the village. I want the feeling back where the ‘Blue Ball’ is once again at the heart of the community, where everyone is welcome." Tony's vision extends beyond just evening entertainment. Plans include afternoon teas, coffee and cake mornings designed to bring people together in a welcoming social environment. To cater to musical tastes, a new sound and audio system is being installed within the venue, that will ‘zone’ areas for different tastes. As the date draws near, Tony and the Blue Ball team eagerly anticipate welcoming the community on December 15 for what promises to be a memorable and joyous occasion.

Man seriously RUNNING WITH PETE hurt while installing festive lights ...Cont. from front page
A man has suffered "lifethreatening" injuries after a van crashed into a cherry picker being used to put up Christmas lights. A Ford Transit van hit the Iveco cherry picker at about 22:55 GMT on Friday in Main Street, in Swallownest. Two men, 42 and 30, were hurt, with the older man sustaining what police called "life-threatening" injuries. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs.
Posting on social media after the crash, Aston-Cum-Aughton Parish Council said new Christmas decorations were being fitted to lamp posts when the collision occurred. "Two engineers were taken to hospital one has now left hospital and the other is in a critical condition," a parish council spokesperson wrote. "The parish council send their thoughts and prayers to the injured gentleman." Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact South Yorkshire Police.

56-year-old Peter, a fit and healthy individual with a passion for running, discovered his love for the sport about a decade ago. His dedication to fitness recently faced a severe test when, after completing the Percy Pud race last year, he found himself unexpectedly in the grips of a heart attack on the drive home. Swift action from the staff at Northern General Hospital proved crucial. Within 45 minutes of arriving, Peter was in surgery, receiving two stents and top-notch care during his 10-day recovery in the hospital. Undeterred by this life-altering event, Peter began his rehabilitation in early 2023, setting a singular goal for himself – to run the Percy Pud again, exactly one year after his heart attack. With unwavering determination, Peter trained tirelessly, reaching near full strength. Pete’s wife of 35 years, Tammy and family, moved by his resilience, decided to run the Percy Pud with him as a surprise. Secretly raising funds for the British Heart Foundation, the initial goal of £250 has now soared
to an incredible £1,662, a testament to the overwhelming support from friends, family, and colleagues. The night before the Percy Pud, the family surprised Peter, revealing their plan to run alongside him. Donning matching “Pete’s Percy Pud” T-shirts, the family presented Peter with a giant cheque under the Christmas Tree in Fox Valley, reflecting the money raised for the British Heart Foundation. www.justgiving.com/page/petes-percy-pud Despite the postponement of the official Percy Pud due to inclement weather, the Neal family, undeterred, wrapped up warmly, donned their T-shirts, and ran 10 kilometres through Stocksbridge, around Underbank reservoir and set up their own finish line under the Christmas Tree, at Fox Valley. Son, James told Look Local “We all got together the night before the Percy Pud to surprise Dad and tell him we were running with him. We handed him a bundle of Percy Pud registration envelopes to show that 5 of his 6 kids, their partners, and 3 of his grandchildren would all be running the Percy Pud with him. We all pulled off our tops to reveal our matching Pete’s Percy Pud T-Shirts. Dad was blown away and could not have been happier, and then our brother who now lives in Los Angeles walked in wearing his own Pete’s Percy Pud T Shirt having secretly flown to the UK and made the journey up from London to surprise us all.” While not all family members can make it back for the rescheduled Percy Pud next weekend, those present will run alongside Peter, proudly sporting shirts that read “Running with Pete” on the back. The Neal family’s inspiring journey reflects the power of resilience, love, and the unwavering support of a tight-knit family.

Local Artist December Honours Clock Tower's Centenary
Celebrating the centennial milestone of the iconic Stocksbridge Clock Tower, local artist Midpack has unveiled his latest artistic creation, capturing the essence of the war memorial in all its original splendour.
Constructed between 1920 and 1923, the familiar landmark stands as a war memorial, funded by public subscription on land generously granted by R.H.R. Rimington Wilson. The Stocksbridge History Society notes that the tower's impressive steps once provided a shortcut from Manchester Road to Bocking Hill. Midpack's artwork has stirred a sense of nostalgia within the community, capturing the original steps leading to the tower's base, complete with the unique fountain that was once a source of enjoyment for many. Expressing his gratitude for the overwhelming response, Mid-
pack shared, "I’m absolutely blown away with how popular the print has been, and would like to thank everyone who has bought one so far." The artist humbly acknowledged the positive feedback received in person and via social media, with many expressing that the piece evoked cherished memories from their youth. For those interested in acquiring a piece of this local history, the artwork is available as an A4 print at Samuels Kitchen in Stocksbridge for £20. Midpack announced a generous gesture, with 50% of all profits dedicated to the Royal British Legion Armed Forces Charity, as a heartfelt tribute to those who sacrificed for peace and freedom. The artist's portfolio, featuring additional curated artwork, can be explored on his website at www.midpackrider.com. The restocked pieces are still available, offering residents an opportunity to bring home a poignant reminder of Stocksbridge's rich history while contributing to a meaningful cause.

The piece, a poignant portrayal, depicts a young boy and his loyal dog, commemorating his father at 11 am on a blustery Sunday morning in the 1920s. A symbolic trail of poppies, left by a soldier, pays tribute to the fallen heroes immortalised at the war memorial.

SY Mayor Launches Parkrun Challenge
SY Mayor Oliver Coppard has kicked off an ambitious initiative to run every one of South Yorkshire’s twelve parkruns as part of the 'Year of Active Travel'. With a focus on promoting health, well-being, and community engagement, Mayor Coppard aims to make South Yorkshire the healthiest region in the UK. The challenge, officially launched at the Endcliffe Park parkrun, encourages residents to actively participate by walking, jogging, running, or volunteering at any six parkrun events in South Yorkshire. This endeavour is designed to strengthen community bonds and enhance overall health and well-being. Mayor Coppard's next parkrun is scheduled for Saturday, December 9, at Sandall Park
in Doncaster. The initiative aligns with the broader mission of the 'Year of Active Travel', emphasising physical activity, green spaces, social inclusion, and community engagement. Mayor Oliver Coppard expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, stating, “A healthier, wealthier, happier South Yorkshire is my absolute mission, and this challenge, spanning each of our region’s parkruns, is just one of the ways I want to actively – in the most literal sense - bring our communities together to help that mission. Collectively, we can make strides for South Yorkshire to one day become the healthiest region in the UK while also fostering our unrivalled community spirit.”

Heritage Highways Project Leaves a Lasting Legacy: Transitioning into the Future
In a recent update from Heritage Highways, Irene Moore, a prominent figure in the initiative, reflected on the accomplishments and future endeavours of the Sheffield Lakeland and Landscape Partnership project. Moore highlighted the diverse events hosted as part of Heritage Highways, including book launches in Bolsterstone, Heritage Ride launches for cyclists at Our Cow Molly in Dungworth and horse rides from Moorland Equine in Stannington. These events aimed to engage the community in the exploration of historical routes and packhorse trails. As part of the Sheffield Lakeland and Landscape Partnership, the group conducted extensive research and surveys on old highways and packhorse routes in the northwest of Sheffield. Their efforts resulted in the creation of various walks, horse rides, and mountain biking routes, complete with waymarked paths adorned with distinctive pack horse signs. A significant achievement of the project was the publication of a book detailing the packhorse routes of Sheffield's "Lakeland." Moreover, the project contributed to restoration and access improvement works, including the rehabilitation of Dark Lane path near Upper Midhope and the enhancement of bridle gates at locations such as Hollin Edge Farm in Deepcar, Dwariden in Ewden valley, and Stake Hill Road in Ughill Moors. Stone mounting blocks were installed at Hollin Edge Farm in Deepcar and Stony Croft Lane in Midhope. The Heritage Highways team also invested in enhancing their online presence, devel-
oping a comprehensive website where resources and news related to the project can be easily accessed. Looking ahead, with the official conclusion of the Sheffield Lakeland and Landscape Partnership project, a dedicated group of volunteers has formed the independent Heritage Highways Access Group. Their ongoing efforts focus on researching and restoring lost routes to their correct historical status, thereby expanding off-road rights of way for riders, cyclists, and walkers. With the recording of historic rights of way set to cut off in January 2031, the group is diligently working to preserve and extend these pathways. To support their mission, Heritage Highways Access Group is fundraising to improve access to rights of way for all users. They have also released two publications, perfect for Christmas presents: "Walk the Old Tracks" – a booklet featuring 12 walks based on historic tracks around Dungworth, Ewden Valley, Bolsterstone, and Little Don Valley, and "An Introduction to Packhorse Routes in the Sheffield Lakeland’s Area," shedding light on the network of generally unknown packhorse routes in the region. These publications are available at various stockists including Look Local Stocksbridge, Samuels Kitchen in Hunshelf Bottom, Stocksbridge Library, Museum and Heritage Centre, "Spotty Cafe" in Langsett, Valleyside Garden Centre near Crosspool, and Anglers Rest Cafe in Bamford. By making these resources accessible, Heritage Highways hopes to continue inspiring exploration and appreciation of Sheffield's rich historical landscape.

Tea Party Prepare for Christmas unites generations Winter Roads:
The Importance of a Winter Car Check
In a display of community spirit, Ecclesfield School hosted a Christmas Tea Party on Friday, December 1st, fostering intergenerational connections between school children and elderly members from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The event, marked by socialising, dancing, and joyous moments, set a delightful tone for the upcoming festive season. Participants from different walks of life came together, creating an inclusive environment that resonated with warmth. Mrs. McDonald, one of the elderly participants, expressed her delight, calling it a "fantastic event" and commending the pupils for being a credit to Ecclesfield School. Sian Staveley, the Curriculum Leader of Health and Social Care, who orchestrated the event, shared her enthusiasm, stating, "It's a wonderful day where we can see the students excel and get involved with the community around them.
As the winter season approaches, it's time to shift our focus from pumpkin spice lattes to something equally crucial – preparing our vehicles for the challenges that winter roads bring. We all As the winter season approaches, it’s time to shift our focus from pumpkin spice lattes to something equally crucial – preparing our vehicles for the challenges that winter roads bring. We all know that winter driving can be unpredictable and hazardous, with snow, ice, and freezing temperatures posing serious threats to both our safety and the well-being of our cars. That’s why a winter car check should be at the top of everyone’s to-do list. First and foremost, ensuring your vehicle is in top-notch condition during the winter is about prioritising your safety and the safety of others on the road. The harsh winter conditions can magnify even the smallest mechanical issues, making a well-maintained vehicle all the more crucial. A comprehensive winter car check can identify potential problems with your brakes, tyres, battery, and other essential components, ensuring that you’re not left stranded on a cold and desolate roadside.
One of the primary concerns during winter is tyre health. Worn-out or improperly inflated tyres can compromise your vehicle’s grip on icy roads, increasing the risk of accidents. A winter car check will assess your tyre tread depth, inflation levels, and overall condition, providing you with the peace of mind that your vehicle can navigate through snow and ice with optimal traction. Your car’s battery also takes a beating in the cold. Frigid temperatures can significantly reduce its effectiveness, making it more prone to failure. A winter car check will assess your battery’s health and voltage, allowing you to replace it if necessary before you find yourself stranded in the freezing cold. Brakes are another critical component that demands attention during winter. Icy roads can extend stopping distances, so ensuring that your brakes are in peak condition is essential for your safety. A winter car check will examine your brake pads, discs, and fluid levels to guarantee your braking system is up to the task. By investing a little time and effort in a winter car check, you’re
not only safeguarding yourself but also contributing to overall road safety. Consider it a responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is in the best possible condition to handle the challenges that winter may throw your way. So, before the larger snowflakes start falling, schedule that winter car check. Whether you entrust it to a professional mechanic or conduct a thorough inspection yourself, taking this proactive step will help you navigate the winter roads confidently and, most importantly, safely. Remember, a small effort today can prevent significant troubles tomorrow. Stay safe, stay prepared, and let’s make this winter a season of worryfree driving for all. Miriam Cates MP, a special guest at the event, lauded the initiative, highlighting its role in combating loneliness and social isolation. expressed her pleasure in working with Sian and the students. She credited their hard work in ensuring that guests had a memorable afternoon filled with delicious Afternoon Tea, fantastic performances by the School Choir and entertainer Oliver Harris. Cllr Susan Davidson, Chairman of Ecclesfield Parish Council, attended the event, appreciating the thoughtful invitation and the attentiveness of the children and staff. Steels have bolstered their squad with the signing of Tom Charlesworth from Penistone Church. The right-back will be familiar to many Steels fans as he played for the club during between 2017 and 2019. He would then leave Bracken Moor to head over the hill to sign for Ian Richards at Penistone Church. He has been at the club ever since, becoming a fan favourite there. He is now returning to Stocksbridge and will be looking to get back into the first team at Bracken Moor as Steels look to climb up the Northern Premier League East table.
NEW SIGNING
Rugby Falls Prey to Winter Chill
The much-anticipated Round 9 clash in the Yorkshire 4 Counties competition between Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby and the Leeds Medics & Dentists students has become the latest casualty of the winter weather. A bitter cold front forced the fixture to be postponed, leaving both teams to regroup and prepare for a replay on a mutually agreed-upon date. With just one fixture managing to survive the icy conditions, the Stocksbridge club now faces the challenge of fitting in rearranged matches amid a shrinking window of available dates. Undeterred, Stocksbridge Rugby shifts its focus to this week's journey to Humberside, where they are set to take on Hessle RUFC under the iconic Humber Bridge. Eager to replicate last season's high-scoring victory, Stocksbridge aims to boost its standing in the league. The potential return of Club Captain Adam Frith, who has been nursing an ankle injury, adds a hopeful dimension to the team's outlook. The Coal Pit Lane stadium will host the next fixture, featuring Stocksbridge against familiar rivals Thornensians RUFC. The match is scheduled for a 2:15 pm kick-off on Saturday, December 16th, and promises an extra layer of excitement as it will be the Christmas Jumper fixture, complete with prizes for the most festively adorned jumper. Following this clash, Stocksbridge Rugby will enjoy a brief respite from action until the New Year. This break allows Head Coach Andy Lawrence valuable time to fine-tune the fitness and form of his playing roster, ensuring they return to the pitch reinvigorated and ready for a strong start in 2024.
100th Park Run
In a remarkable achievement, Monica Sharp, the dedicated club secretary of Valley Hill Runners, marked a significant milestone by completing her 100th park run this Saturday. Despite the freezing temperatures and icy conditions at Concord Park, the resilient 71-year-old showcased her commitment to fitness and camaraderie. Monica, who took up running in her 60s, expressed that her journey began as a means of meeting new people and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. Emphasising that fitness knows no age limits, she encouraged individuals of all ages to embrace physical activity. "Anyone of any age can take up fitness; it's not just for the young," Monica remarked. The December chill did not deter Monica, who shared her gratitude for the Valley Hill members and their unwavering support. She highlighted the inclusive nature of the club, where all abilities are welcomed and no one is ever left behind. Monica credited the encouragement from her fellow runners for reaching the impressive milestone. Chris Grayson, the Male Captain of Valley Hill Runners, expressed the club's collective joy for Monica's achievement. "All the club members are thrilled for her reaching 100 park runs," Grayson said. The accomplishment reflects not only Monica's personal dedication but also the supportive community fostered by Valley Hill Runners.

Fell Runners Brave the Elements in Gravy Pud Challenge As snowy conditions played havoc with running events over the weekend, the highly anticipated Percy Pud 10k road race faced postponement, and rescheduled for the upcoming weekend in hopes of improved weather. However, defying the wintry odds, the Gravy Pud fell race in Tintwistle, Derbyshire, and pressed on with its challenging five-mile course boasting 800 feet of elevation. Undeterred by the steep hills, rough terrain, and snowy landscape, Penistone runners showcased their resilience in the face of adversity. George Parr emerged as the first Penistone runner, securing a commendable sixth-place finish in the gruelling conditions. Joining him in conquering the challenging course were Jon Hallam, Steve Saunders, Lesley Parker, and Helen Wright. In the preceding weekend's Doncaster 10k, Bill Phillips made a mark by clinching first place in the men's over-75 age category with an impressive time of 48:04.
