Rainbow Talk Spirit of the blitz
100 years centenary for clock tower
15
An exceptional achievement has been reached at a primary school in North Sheffield. Angram Bank Primary School, in High Green has seen both staff and children work tirelessly to elevate their educational practice through the remarkable program of Rainbow Talk. Recognised as a valuable tool in advancing children's vocabulary and critical thinking skills, Rainbow Talk has become deeply ingrained in the school's curriculum and is now deployed across Key Stage One. The initiative was initially spearheaded by the dedicated efforts of Miss Hotchkiss and the Foundation Stage team. However, its success has swiftly spread throughout the entire school community. Speaking about their journey, Miss Hotchkiss expresses her pride, stating, "Through our unwavering commitment, hard work, and exceptional implementation of Rainbow Talk, we have been bestowed with the extraordinary distinction of being recognised as a Rainbow Talk Beacon School! We are immensely proud to be one of the two schools bestowed with this prestigious award. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to all the parents who have wholeheartedly supported us on this momentous journey. Here's to countless more accomplishments through Rainbow Talk!"

CCTV RELEASED Spirit of the Blitz SUPERMARKET ASSAULT They’ll be raising the roof and ‘rolling out the barrel’ this coming Saturday afternoon at the Penistone Paramount as ‘We’ll Meet Again’ for a show of 1940’s nostalgia.
Officers in Sheffield have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with an assault. It is reported that on Wednesday 18 October at 6pm, a 32-year-old man was shopping in Morrisons supermarket on Penistone Road, Hillsborough, when a verbal altercation with another customer occurred. It is then reported that when the victim exited the shop to the car park, the other customer followed the man and assaulted him resulting in serious injuries to his nose and ear. Enquiries are ongoing but officers are keen to identify the man in the images as they may be able to assist with enquiries.
Do you recognise this man? If you can help, you can pass information to the police online or by calling 101. Please quote incident number 741 of 18 October when you get in touch. You can access our online portal here: www.southyorks.police.uk/ contact-us/report-something Alternatively, if you prefer not to give your details, you can stay anonymous and pass on what you know by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers. ‘Spirit of the Blitz’ is a music-packed tribute show featuring the music of the war years and is being presented on Remembrance Day in commemoration alongside other events held throughout the country over the coming weekend. This variety show includes many of the well-known melodies that helped keep up the nation’s morale and features Andy Eastwood paying tribute to the great George Formby, Maggie O’Hara performing the songs of Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields and the Maestro of music - Michael Wooldridge will be playing the Paramount’s mighty Compton Cinema Organ in all its glory. Andy Eastwood said ‘I’m thrilled to be back at the Penistone Paramount and to be featuring George Formby’s very own famous ukulele’. “George first used a ukulele
in his act at the Alhambra Theatre, Barnsley, so it’s fitting to be doing this show so close to where it all started” Organist - Michael Wooldridge said, “The Compton Cinema Organ at the Penistone Paramount is one of the finest instruments of its type in the country and it’s a pleasure to be back at its white and gold console to showcase its versatility in this show”. Wallow in pure nostalgia in one of Yorkshire’s oldest traditional cinema theatres - the Penistone Paramount. The red velvet seats await your presence to commemorate “The Spirit of the Blitz’ in memory of those who served our nation to protect the freedom we enjoy today. Council to review policy after Israeli flag backlash Sheffield City Council has said it would review its policy on town hall flags but has refused to apologise for hoisting the Israeli flag after a backlash. A protester scaled Sheffield Town Hall last month and replaced the flag with a Palestinian one. The council said the flag was an act of solidarity after Hamas launched an attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip. Leader Tom Hunt said he recognised "it caused hurt for some people" but an apology risked causing further hurt. Sheffield City Council flew the Israeli flag days after dozens of Hamas armed fighters crossed into Israel from Gaza in a surprise attack, killing more than 1,400 people and taking more than 220 hostages. Mr Hunt said the decision was made before Israel launched retaliatory airstrikes, which Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry said had so far killed more than 9,000 people. In a video clip shared online, people could be heard shouting "take it down" and cheering as the Israeli flag was lowered from the 200ft town hall by a protester.
It also prompted a petition, which gathered more than 1,300 signatures, calling on the council to apologise for its actions. The petition was presented to the authority at a meeting of the full council where Mr Hunt responded to it. The leader explained the UK government had asked local authorities to consider flying the Israeli flag on public buildings to show solidarity.
Two men accused of racially aggravated offences Officers in Sheffield have released CCTV images of two men they would like to speak to in connection with an incident at Sheffield Town Hall last month.
He said the flag was flown "to show solidarity with the victims" of the Hamas attack and was not about "taking sides in a decades-long conflict", according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. He added: "The decision was taken in good faith and of course, I and others have reflected on it over the last few weeks as the horror of what we have seen in Israel has been replaced by the horror we have seen in Gaza.
It is reported that during a protest outside Sheffield Town Hall on the evening of Tuesday 10 October, two men climbed onto the roof of the building and removed the flag that was being flown.
"It was right to show solidarity but I recognise that this act of solidarity caused hurt for some people."
Sheffield City Council had raised an Israeli flag on the Sheffield Town Hall.
Mr Hunt said the council would review its flag protocol and added: "Flying the flag was not a straightforward decision and it has prompted a range of responses and heartfelt emotions."
Officers are investigating the incident as a racially aggravated public order offence contrary to the Public Order Act and are treating it as a hate crime.

Activists occupied space under trees that were about to be felled, or hindered the movement of vehicles and machines, by slow-walking. They also hindered or prevented the positioning of fencing that workers used to enclose worksites and exclude public access. Full enclosure was necessary for the Council’s court injunction against activists to be enforceable. The injunction made it a criminal act for a person to enter an enclosure. Activists that did so faced huge financial penalties and a prison sentence. On 10/3/2023, The Yorkshire Post reported: “Sheffield Council officials repeatedly pressured South Yorkshire Police [SYP] to arrest more anti tree-felling protesters – and even commissioned a barrister to outline potential legal action they could take against the force…”.
After we moved to Stocksbridge in 1973 (before Hallowe’en was Americanised) I was surprised when “Cakers” knocked on our door on Hallowe’en singing a variation of a folk song I knew from the LP (“Long Player” – now known as “Vinyl”) “Frost and Fire” by the Watersons folk group from Hull (you can listen to it at: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=OFNTitbBDtA ). This LP had a collection of folk songs linked to the medieval festivals (Easter through to Christmas), together with “Sleeve Notes” (remember them? – you don’t get them on downloads !) which explained how the early Christian calendar had absorbed some of the older traditional festivals and their associated folk songs and the traCK “Souling Song” is about SoulCaking.

Homeless Link responds to Braverman absurd proposals Homeless Link and our members supported the government’s commitment to repealing the 1824 Vagrancy Act and agreed with the former Rough Sleeping and Housing Minister Eddie Hughes when he stated, “No-one should be criminalised simply for having nowhere to live, and it is right that we repeal the outdated Vagrancy Act.” It is absurd to now replace that act with something which continues to criminalise people forced to sleep rough Suella Braverman’s latest proposals take us back 199 years. The causes of homelessness are clear – the critical shortage of affordable homes and soaring rents while housing benefit is frozen; crumbling mental health and social care services and a failing immigration system. Individuals facing homelessness are usually survivors of trauma. They need help and support not criminalisation. The number of people sleeping rough in England is rising rapidly. It’s absurd to suggest that this is down to “lifestyle choices” or that the answer is a “crackdown” on people sleeping rough and the charities that support them. No one should be sleeping rough in a tent in our country.
The Government could and should act – not by demonising and criminalising, but by supporting people experiencing and at risk of homelessness. 100 Years of Iconic Clock Tower
Written By Dennis Pindar, Stocksbridge History Society
On November 12th, in conjunction with the Remembrance Sunday service at 10:45 am, a special re-dedication service will mark the centenary of the iconic Clock Tower. Stocksbridge Town Council, with the support of the Stocksbridge and District History Society, has prepared a commemorative leaflet for this significant anniversary. These leaflets will be available during the service and at various locations throughout the town, allowing people to reflect on this Remembrance Day and the enduring legacy of the Clock Tower Memorial. The history of the Clock Tower dates back to a visionary proposal in October 1916 when Mr Joseph Sheldon put forth a motion at a Stocksbridge Urban District Council meeting. His motion aimed to create a scheme to honour the men who had left the district and lost their lives defending the country. Following this, in November of the same year, Councillor Sheldon suggested calling a public meeting to form a committee responsible for devising a memorial plan. A public meeting was convened at the Stocksbridge Works School, where a committee was appointed, and a resolution was passed to commemorate the local heroes who had fought and fallen in the war. However, progress on the memorial in Stocksbridge faced a two-year hiatus, with no significant developments until after the end of the First World War. In May 1919, a public meeting proposed the construction of a Pub-
lic Memorial Hall, estimated to cost £10,000, to be funded by subscriptions. A committee was formed, with Mr. J. Sheldon as chairman, tasked with raising the necessary funds. In contrast, the Bolsterstone Memorial was realised much more swiftly, with the unveiling of a beautiful Saxon Cross in May 1920, honouring 31 local men who had lost their lives in the war. Meanwhile, local churches in Stocksbridge took the initiative to commemorate their fallen heroes, starting with the Stocksbridge Wesleyans in October 1920, followed by Stocksbridge Parish Church (St. Matthias) and the Primitive Methodists (Prims) in subsequent months. It wasn't until January 1921 that a public meeting in Stocksbridge decided on a Clock Tower as the war memorial, with an estimated cost of £2,000. Approximately £1,000 had already been pledged, and Mr F. Coultas appealed to the community of nearly 9,000 residents to contribute the remaining £1,000 through smaller subscriptions. Despite financial challenges and some uncertainty, the Clock Tower Memorial project persevered. In April 1922, Councillor Sheldon reassured the community that work on the Clock Tower would commence "as soon as possible." Notably, R.H.R. RimingtonWilson generously donated the land for the Clock Tower and later sold an adjacent field to the Council to create an attractive garden space around the Memorial. Architect Mr Waynard Dixon's design was selected, and Messrs. Wm. Potts of Leeds was chosen to provide the clock with four faces and bells featuring Cambridge Quarter Chimes, along with the inscription on the largest bell, "At the going down of the sun, we will remember them."
Finally on July 14th, 1923, the Foundation Stone was laid by F. S. Scott-Smith, General Manager of Fox's Works, in front of a large gathering of 3000 people, including members of the British Legion and prominent community figures. The Memorial Tower was unveiled on December 1st, 1923, by Rimington-Wilson and the Bishop of Sheffield performing the dedication service. This enduring Clock Tower, constructed from Greenmoor stone, now features two bronze plaques bearing the names of 106 men and one woman from WW1 and 57 names from WW2, ensuring that
their memory lives on. "We Will Remember Them."
Appeal: Please join us at Johnson Street at 10am to commence the Parade to the Clock Tower, for this Historic 100th anniversary.

Wharncliffe Side’s All-Stars It was a day filled with excitement and celebration as Wharncliffe Side Primary School emerged as the champions of the first-ever Primary All-Stars inclusive football event. The 7-a-side tournament, organised by Sheffield Wednesday, took place at the Jubilee Sports Ground community facility and showcased the talent and inclusivity of primary school students.
The event, designed for mixed teams of Year 6 boys and girls, brought together young athletes from various backgrounds, uniting them in the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Brett Pitcher, who played a pivotal role in organising the tournament, expressed his delight at the resounding success of the event and the enthusiasm displayed by all participants. "It's heartwarming to see these young boys and girls coming together on the field to share their love for the beautiful game." The winning team, Wharncliffe Side Primary School, displayed exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship throughout the tournament, ultimately securing the title. Freya, one
of the girls from the victorious Wharncliffe Side team, expressed her excitement about the event. "I loved it! It's the first time I have ever played football outside school, and I'd love to do it again," Freya said with a beaming smile, highlighting the positive impact the event had on young participants. Class Teacher and Head of PE at Wharncliffe Side Primary Nigel Hartley said. "I’m really proud of them all. The Primary AllStars event is all about promoting inclusion and providing an opportunity for children to showcase their football skills, regardless of their gender or background." The inaugural Primary AllStars inclusive football event served as a shining example of the power of sports to bring people together and create opportunities for all. It is events like these that inspire the next generation of athletes and promote the values of inclusivity, fairness, and teamwork. Congratulations to Wharncliffe Side Primary School and all the participants who made this event a memorable success.
WANTED WANTED WANTED ‘Stocksbridge Rugby Camper Vans / Motorhomes beaten by the weather’ Globe Holidays-sponsored Stocksbridge Rugby found themselves victims of the recent bad weather, and with a waterlogged pitch, they were forced to cancel their friendly fixture against Maltby Rugby at the weekend. With only one serviceable pitch to play on, the club are keen to begin drainage work on the main pitch after the grant award was confirmed last Month by Stocksbridge Council. The enforced rest has again given the Club’s walking wounded more time to rehab and heal, as Head Coach Andy Lawrence will be looking to select from a nearly full playing roster for the next league fixture, the Yorkshire 4 Counties round 8 clash versus East Coast rivals, and 4th placed Hornsea Rugby at Coal Pit Lane on Saturday, with a 2.15pm kick-off time.
Stocksbridge will be looking for a convincing performance and a win that would begin to lift them from their current lowly 12th place in the league ladder. Stocksbridge Rugby will then travel to West Yorkshire the following week to face 5thplaced Knottingley RUFC. This Year’s Christmas Jumper fixture will be on 16th December, when old enemy Thornesians Rugby are the visitors to Coal Pit Lane. Club Captain, that man Adam Frith is confident that his charges can build on recent performances and pull away from the foot of the league, ’the break has given us time to recover and time to hit the training paddock’ he said, adding ‘the hard work will pay off, and we should begin to see the fruits of our efforts in performances, and results’.

STEELS FALL APART Bridlington 4-0 Stocksbridge PS
Stocksbridge Park Steels suffered their biggest loss in 18 months as they fell 4-0 to Bridlington Town. Steels did start the game brightly. Tomas Poole was causing problems with an early effort forcing James Hitchcock into action. He would have another strike from a similar position on the pitch but that one would go wide. Bridlington would then get into the game and they’d soon have their goal. A good ball played in Ali Aydemir on the right wing who found an onrushing Benn Lewis in the box. He then slammed the ball into the roof of the net, giving the seaside club the lead. Minutes late, Bridlington were two ahead. They had a corner on the right and Andy Norfolk pinged the ball in. Jack Walters was unmarked and he powered a free header in, giving Bridlington a two-goal advantage. One concerning moment would happen later in the first half. Luke Rawson and Tomas Poole tried sliding into the six-yard area to convert a good low ball into that area, but Bridlington were able to defend it and Rawson was penalised for making contact with the goalkeeper. How-
ever, a boot made contact with Rawson’s eye, causing a serious injury. In the second half, Stocksbridge pushed forward and tried to get back into the game. The best opportunity would fall to Curtis Davies, who forced a mistake from the Bridlington defence. He tried to curl the ball into the bottom corner but Hitchcock made another good save, keeping Stocksbridge out. But it would soon all go wrong for Steels. A switch in play was intercepted by Aydemir and he soon took off down the pitch with no one being able to catch him. He would then finish past Townsend, killing the game off as a contest.
Next Home Fixture: Saturday 11 November, 3pm KO vs North Ferriby. A special remembrance will be held with a two minute silence with a bugle player and ex-servicemen/ women in attendance. Photos by Ian Revitt
Three minutes later it was even worse. Lewis Dennison’s cross came from the left and Aydemir was there at the far post to finish, making sure that Bridlington would have a big win to remember from the day. It was easy to say could it get worse, but the football gods would find a way to do. Jordan Lemon, who was captain for the day with Ross Goodwin and Kurtis Turner out, would be sent off for dissent as frustrations got too much for the team. And just to

make it even worse, Poole would also get sent off later for dissent as well. It capped off a terrible trip to the seaside for the Steels.
