CONVICTED KILLER PICKERING FOUND GUILTY OF 70s STOCKSBRIDGE RAPE
armed robbery spree - page 02
easter feature - page 14
A CONVICTED killer has been found guilty of raping a woman in Stocksbridge, just weeks before raping and killing a schoolgirl.
Peter Pickering, now 80, abducted an 18-year-old woman as she walked to work in Stocksbridge in 1972. He lured the woman into a van before raping her, handcuffing her and burning her with a cigarette. Just weeks later, he had killed 14-year-old Barnsley schoolgirl Shirley Boldy. He has been under hospital order since then, having admitted manslaughter. It took jurors at Leeds Crown Court just two hours to reach the verdict on Tuesday March 20. The
judge, Mr Justice Goss, said he would not sentence Pickering on Tuesday, because he needed new reports on his mental state to be prepared.
Pickering’s barrister, Sasha Wass QC, asked the judge if her client could be sentenced in Reading or Swindon Crown Court - nearer to where he is being held at a hospital in Berkshire. Senior investigating officer in the case, Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, said: “We are delighted he has been brought to justice today for an offence he committed more than 46 years ago. “His victim has had to live a lifetime of knowing that Pickering, while not at large, had not answered for
the dreadful and terrifying ordeal he put her through on that evening.
“Pickering was convicted following a methodical police investigation which saw us locate and examine lock-up units he rented in which we found significant amounts of material related to this case. “This material proved to be a key factor in helping officers identify and contact his victim to begin the process of both investigating this offence and seeking the justice she has been entitled to for many years. “I hope that the conviction of Pickering will be of some comfort to the victim who has lived with the impact of his crime for the majority of her life.”

SHOP STAFF LEFT TERRIFIED BY TRIO OF HIGH GREEN AND CHAPELTOWN ARMED ROBBERIES POLICE are appealing for information after two armed robberies at convenience stores on Sunday March 18.
to open the safe and a quantity of cash was taken. They also stole a quantity of tobacco.
At around 7.20pm, it was reported that three men armed with a bladed article entered the Coop on Greengate Lane in High Green.
Leading the investigation Detective Sergeant Cath Abou-Ragheb said: “These were two very distressing incidents, in neighbouring villages within a short space of time of each other.
The men threatened two staff members and forced them to open the till and safe before leaving with a quantity of cash.
“While no-one was injured, the staff understandably were incredibly shaken up and are being supported by officers.
The men had their heads and faces covered and were wearing dark-coloured jackets and trousers.
“I can reassure people living in these communities that a full investigation is underway and that we are working to establish whether the incidents are linked.
At around 9.20pm, two men armed with a bladed article entered the Co-op on Burncross Road in Chapeltown. The men, who had their faces covered, forced a staff member
“We are keen to hear from anyone who was in either area around the time of the offences – did you hear or see anything
suspicious? If so, please do get in touch.” To report information about the High Green robbery please contact 101 quoting incident 947 of 18 March 2018. To report information about the Chapeltown robbery please quote incident 1077 of 18 March 2018. The attacks come just 10 days after a similar raid at Hays travel agents on Loundside in Chapeltown. Three masked men burst into the shop armed with an axe, a machete and a knife at 4.30pm on Wednesday March 8. They proceeded to take terrified staff members into the back room before demanding money, which they managed to leave with. Hays Travel in Chapeltown was robbed by three armed raiders.
Fish set to scale heights not reached for over a hundred years YORKSHIRE Water is about to start a fish pass project at Wharncliffe Side. When complete, it will allow salmon, trout and grayling to move further up river than they have, possibly since the Industrial Revolution. Three fish passes will be built bringing new life to the upper reaches of the River Don. This is the second project of a much wider programme of work which will see a total of £15m invested to cre-
ate 14 new fish passes built across the region between now and 2020. Contract partner Ward & Burke will start on the project this month with work set to be completed in July. Trout and salmon are genetically programmed to swim as far upstream as possible to breed, often to the exact place they were born. However, previous changes to rivers and streams, such as building reser-
voirs or weirs to manage water levels for mills, have created barriers which stop fish migration. The investment into the new fish passes also contributes to the Don Catchment River Trusts ‘Salmon to Sheffield’ project, which aims to return salmon to Sheffield for the first time in 200 years. Dr Ben Aston, Yorkshire Water’s Lead Ecology Advisor said: “This is a great opportunity to improve the biodiversity of Yorkshire’s rivers through an innova-
tive partnership between ourselves, the Environment Agency, the Don Catchment Rivers Trust and our designers, Jeremy Benn Associates. “Although there are only a handful of customers who live close to the working area, we’d like to assure them that we’ll keep any disruption to an absolute minimum.” The fish pass is being built over the summer to take advantage of lower
flows in the river which will make the construction easier. It also means the fish passes will be complete in time for the time of year when brown trout usually start their journey upstream to breed. The company has recently completed a fish pass at Langsett Reservoir, near Stocksbridge and will be officially opening it in April this year to coincide with World Fish Migration Day.
Funding boost and new chief executive for Paces PACES, the Sheffield charity and school which supports children, adults and families with Cerebral Palsy, has had two reasons to celebrate this month after landing £75,000 of funding and finding a new chief executive. The grant will help them to develop their work helping parents of disabled children. It has come from The Henry Smith Charity - an independent trust which aims to bring about lasting change to people’s lives - and will be used over the next three years to launch a ‘Families for Families’ mentoring network. It will support 40 parents over three years by providing them with the resources, support and information they need to have the confidence to manage their children’s needs. The aim is to ensure they have access to the services available and reduce the potential for their isolation by sharing both knowledge and experience. The work provided by this grant will complement the outreach proChildren at Paces and new chief executive Dr gramme which is being funded by Spencer Pitfield
last year’s £80,000 support from BBC Children in Need. The new chief executive, Dr Spencer Pitfield OBE, said: “One of our priorities at Paces has always been to support not only children with Cerebral Palsy but their families and this grant from The Henry Smith Charity will allow us to develop our pioneering work in this area.
“We know that parents can often feel alone, isolated and unsure where to turn for support following their child’s diagnosis. By providing support for their family, we hope to break down those barriers, provide access to those who have experienced the challenges and signpost the way to the help that is on offer.” Dr Pitfield, 48, has been a trustee of Paces since 2010 and has served as interim chief executive officer of the charity since July last year. He was appointed following a competitive recruitment process by the charity’s trustees. He has three children and lives in Sheffield, is a professional musician who has held a number of influential roles across the community, including as a magistrate and governor of Sheffield NHS Foundation Trust.
He has previously stood as a Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservative Party and been involved in the voluntary party speaking up for party members for a number of years. Announcing the appointment, Chair of Trustees Ann Menzies-Blythe, said: “Spencer, with his wide educational experience, allied with strong management expertise and a clear vision for the future, had dedicated himself to consolidate and develop Paces Sheffield with his colleagues at Paces. “Paces was established 21 years ago by parents who, dissatisfied with the support offer for their children with Cerebral Palsy, searched across Europe until they came across The Peto Institute, a centre for the development of Conductive Education. From there they raised funding and established Paces in High Green, Sheffield. 21 years later, Paces has grown to the Outstanding OFSTED School and charity it is today. “We look forward to seeing Paces consolidating its best practice and strengths, honouring its history, yet moving forward positively to its next phase of development and expansion under Spencer’s leadership.”

Penistone archives 1895-1974 to be showcased IMPORTANT historic records relating to the former Penistone Urban District Council have been carefully sorted, preserved and catalogued by Barnsley Archives and Local Studies and will be showcased at a very special event on Wednesday March 28. The event, which will be held in the former council offices on Shrewsbury Road between 10am and 2pm, will allow people to see the fascinating documents for the very first time.
They include rate books (lists of residents who paid a rate to the council), plans of new buildings, Air Raid Precautions (A.R.P), housing records and various posters. The surviving records provide a unique insight into the Penistone area during a period of significant social change and are an important source of information for family and local historians. Founded in 1895, the council was responsible for providing services in the district such as housing,
planning, libraries and allotments. The council was abolished in 1974, its functions being taken over by Barnsley Council.
Cllr Roy Miller, The Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “The Archives on Tour events proved to be hugely successful last year and provided people with a unique opportunity to see historic documents up close. “At the Penistone event people with an interest in local history can study these unique documents,
which often mention people who lived and worked in the area. “For those unable to attend the event they can see all the documents in the Experience Barnsley Discovery Centre, based in Barnsley Town Hall. To see the online catalogue visit www.explorebarnsleycollections.com and to find out more about the event visit www.experience-barnsley.com

Couple prepare for marathon challenge PENISTONE couple Emma and Steve Stead are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime when they aim to cross the line together at the London Marathon next month. The pair have both completed the 26.2 mile run in the capital on previous occasions but Sunday April 22 will be the first time they have taken on the run together and they are aiming for a time of three hours 45 minutes. Emma and Steve both work at property firm Dransfield Properties at the company’s Fox Valley Head Office. The couple have three children Tom, 14, Meg, 12, and Holly nine, who will be cheering on their Mum and Dad watching the television coverage of the race.
Free writing workshop rescheduled as snow strikes BAD weather forced organisers to postpone a free writing workshop for the second time last Saturday. This will now be held on Thursday April 22 in Stocksbridge Library, 2pm until 4pm. If you are a budding poet or writer the workshop hopes to stimulate some writing about the local area. Some of this poetry or prose will be used to augment the work of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, a project set up by Rotherham and Sheffield Wildlife Trust to support initiatives that will help to develop and enhance the area that lies between Sheffield and the Peak District National Park. If you have something to say about the place you live, then do come and join this re-arranged session. For further information ring 01142 883390 or email francests36@gmail.com
Bakewell Food Festival The Bakewell Food Festival returns for its seventh year, celebrating the wealth of excellent local produce that the Peak District and this beautiful market town have to offer. As well as the multi-award winning farmers market in the Agricultural Business Centre, the town’s historic streets will host more than their usual splendid offerings of food.
They’re aiming to raise money for the Heads Together (Barnsley) Charitable Trust – the charity was set up by Claire Throssell in memory of her sons Jack and Paul who tragically died in a house fire started by their father in October 2014.
Steve said: “We have both taken part in the marathon separately and now our children are a little bit older we thought it would be a good opportunity this year to run together – we will be aiming to cross the line together in around three hours 45 minutes.”
Emma and Steve, who are both 40 later this year, founded an annual Fun Run in Penistone for the same charity two years ago and are determined that their marathon efforts will also help the work of the charity.
Emma added: “It is incredibly time consuming and tough preparing for a marathon alongside working and looking after our family but we are both determined to complete the challenge and are really looking forward to doing the run together.”
The couple are currently in training – taking to the hills around Penistone and Stocksbridge to build up their stamina for the big challenge on April 22 when they’ll join more than 40,000 runners pounding the streets of the capital.

Improvements for Middlewood park MIDDLEWOOD Park’s play area is to get a overhaul by Sheffield City Council. The recently approved works will see two completely new play equipment sites. This will also include the removal of tarmac for artificial grass and a soil and seed area. The area will also have a cantilever swing for the first time.
Hillsborough councillor Josie Paszek said: “We have some great and well used parks in Hillsborough but I felt that certain play areas could do with an upgrade.” Councillor Mary Lea, Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure added: “These will raise the overall standard of our parks and playgrounds - enhancing their play value and encouraging active play and exercise.”

THREE GENERATIONS FOR WINDOW COMPANY
HISTORY From humble beginnings, leaving school at 15 to start work as a tractor driver and general farm worker with wages of £20 per week back then in 1975, I realised there must be more to life, so I went to work for the first double glazing company set up in the Sheffield area called Radiant Superglaze. After two years working there, learning all the skills, I decided to set up a business of my own, manufacturing double glazing in the old stables at The Coach and Horses pub in Stocksbridge. I soon moved into our existing premises on Manchester Road, Deepcar. The business quickly expanded through doing a good job, offering excellent customer service and value for money. The company soon grew to a £2 million pound turnover that enabled me to buy my own factory and I won the Yorkshire Television Young Business Man of the Year Award back in 1983.
3 Generations: This year will be the 40th Anniversary
We are still going strong at our existing premises we bought in 1978. 34 years ago. We are a family run business, joined by my son two years ago and hopefully his son will be joining us in a few years time. WHY ARE WE SO SUCCESSFUL? I put that down to having old fashioned customer values, the customer is king at our firm, we stick to our old fashioned values, courtesy and customer service - we are customer friendly. Nothing is too much trouble for our customers. After all, it is the customer who pays our wages. When you contact us, you talk to a real person, not a computer, you don’t wait on the line trying to get through to a real person. We are a forward looking company offering top quality ‘A’ Rated energy saving windows as standard. We are also introducing new products to satisfy our growing number of thousands of customers. 95% of our work is within a ten mile radius of Deepcar but we have travelled further on recommendation - as far as London, Liverpool, Scotland and even as far as the Isle of Man. We have thousands of satisfied customers. With our company, you get the old fashioned customer service with the most modern, up to date products. In fact, the Eurocell system we use is, without doubt, the best on the market. Ring now for a free quotation or call at our showroom to see the full range of products on display. We supply the best quality product fitted by our qualified installation engineers. We also have our own plasterer, brick layers and electrician, all qualified and professional.

Some people are bringing up children on their own or are looking after a relative, friend or neighbour. Sometimes people feel lonely even when they are with others. Thanks to National Lottery Players a new and personalised community befriending service takes a step closer to becoming a reality thanks to a grant of £256,108 awarded to Foxhill Forum over four years from the Big Lottery Fund. The Reaching Out Community Befriending Service will target and reach out to isolated local people in Foxhill where they feel most comfortable which could
be their homes or another setting, offering them a package of support including befriending, relationship building and bitesized goal setting. This support will help these residents to develop their confidence and how they feel about themselves, and also to encourage them to participate in wider community activities The Forum will shortly be recruiting a Community Connector & Relationship Builder to the Team who will be a key point of contact for the project on the ground. Other residents will benefit from wider opportunities offered through the project, which will be planned and delivered by a team of local Volunteer Community Facilitators. Residents will also be recruited, supported and trained as befrienders to support others.
The new service will be launched and commence delivery in April 2018. Mark Wilde, Chief Executive said, “Thanks to National Lottery players and the support of the Big Lottery Fund, I am delighted we have secured funding over four years to develop and deliver a personalised community befriending service. The impact of such a new service will be huge on the lives of so many including those who previously, for whatever reason, have not been as involved or have not been reached or supported previously” For further details about the project and the opportunities to volunteer please ring us on 0114 231 5522, or drop us an email to contactus@foxhill-forum.co.uk

We’re also hoping that every group which reserved a table previously can make it on the 29th. We will be getting in touch with you. Our numbers are 0114 2882498, 0114 2883899 and 0774 9879107. The agenda for our regular SCF meeting is: a) an introduction to a local Community Interest Company: Garden Partners by Jenny and Peter and b) an opportunity for candidates hoping to represent us on Sheffield City Council in the May local election to introduce themselves and answer questions. Our meeting is on Wednesday March 28, 7pm at The Venue. All welcome.
Grit bins
Thank you
Dear LL, Stocksbridge Community Forum For the last few weeks Stocksbridge has been on the shortlist for the inaugural Ramblers Best Neighbourhood Walking Area Award. After making the shortlist, the football equivalent of SPS reaching the third round of the FA Cup, we were part of an online vote for the winner. We didn’t win, but we did make a major impact. Reaching the final ten has brought publicity: following from the TdF and the TdY for cycling, Stocksbridge is now firmly on the nationwide walking map.
Dear Sir / Madam
Could I and my colleague thank the individuals who In the vote, Hastings Old Town got 21% of the votes, Stocksbridge was a close second with 19.5%. helped get traffic through Vaughton Hill junction I want to know why there are so few grit bins in last Saturday evening during the snowstorm and And remember, as in Strictly Come Dancing, the best does not always win the popular vote. After this weekends bad weather and the bad many would have had a long, cold walk home. Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome weather the other week, this has meant I’ve been Community spirit at its best. trapped in the bungalow with the wife twice in a month! Penistone Fairtrade When our son came to help us clear the drive after travelling two hours from Manchester, he wasn’t able to because the grit had seemingly been used to clear the drives of the detached and semi detached houses in our area. Isn’t it time the council installed more grit bins and the local police made sure grit wasn’t stockpiled by more physically able people?
Chairman of Penistone Fairtrade Committee, Jeremy Cutts, presented a certificate to the Mayor at a Fairtrade Coffee Morning in Penistone Library on Friday March 9. The certificate celebrates previous achievements and confirms Penistone’s status as a Fairtrade Town has been renewed for a further two years.
I understand that a near neighbour suffered a broken leg falling on the way to empty her bin and had to go into hospital. If we’d had a grit bin we’d have been able to clear her drive and kept her out of hospital (costing tax payers more).

Easter Feature
Easter Fe
EASTER, the principal festival of the Christian church year, celebrates the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his Crucifixion. The celebration dates to the beginnings of Christianity and is probably the oldest Christian observance after the Sabbath. But most historians believe that what we now know as Easter is actually a congregation of three traditions - Pagan, Hebrew and Christian.
The 8th century historian St Bede held that the festival’s name was derived from Eostre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring to whom April was dedicated. There is evidence that Christians originally celebrated the resurrection of Christ every Sunday, with observances such as Scripture readings, psalms and the Eucharist. At some stage in the first two centuries, it became customary to celebrate the resurrection on one day each year and many of the religious observances were taken from the Jewish Passover, which commemorates Israel’s delivery from bondage in Egypt. But the day on which the resurrection was to be celebrated became a major point of contention within the church - should it
be on Passover no matter which day it falls, or should it always be on Sunday?
The argument caused a split as Asiatic Christians stuck with the Passover while the rest insisted on celebrating the Resurrection on a Sunday. The issue was finally decided when the Emperor Constantine called the Council of Nicea in 325 which decreed that Easter should be celebrated by all on the same Sunday, the first after the paschal moon. The policy was enacted throughout the empire, but Rome adopted an 84-year lunar cycle to determine the date, whereas Alexandria used a 19-year cycle, a practice which continues to this day and contributes to the disparity between the eastern and western dates. It was during Passover in 30 AD that Christ was crucified under the order of the Roman governor Pontius Pilate as the then Jewish high priests accused Jesus of blasphemy. The resurrection came three days later and so the early Christian Passover turned out to be a unitive celebration in memory of the passion-death-resurrection of Jesus. However, by the 4th century, Good Friday was observed as a separate occasion and the Pascha Sunday was devoted exclu-
sively to the resurrection. So the Easter Triduum was born - a three-day celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil, or Easter Sunday.
In Roman Catholicism, and some Lutheran and Anglican churches, Easter is celebrated with a vigil that consists of the blessing of the new fire, a practice which dates back to the early Middle Ages. This is followed by the lighting of the paschal candle; a service of lessons, called the prophecies, the blessing of the font and baptisms and the Easter mass. In Orthodox churches, the vigil service is preceded by a procession outside the church. The procession leaves the church in darkness to conduct a symbolic fruitless search for Christ’s body, then joyfully announces, “Christ is risen!” When the procession returns to the church, hundreds of candles and lamps are lit to symbolise Christ’s resurrection, and the Easter Eucharist is celebrated. Protestant services also include baptism and the Eucharist, or Lord’s Supper, and recent years have seen a revival in sunrise services to commemorate Mary Magdalene’s arrival at the empty tomb “early, while it was still dark”.

Hull blizzard blows Hawks off course
Bad bounces and missed catches were the downfall of the Hawks team. Sheffield Hawks 12-24 Lambwath Lions IN the first match of the new season, Sheffield Hawks were defeated by a good Lambwath Lions team who scored from every chance they had. It’s a hard medicine to take but if Hawks had scored from every potential opportunity they would have cruised to victory. Scoreline aside, for the first match of the season there were many positives to draw from the excellent defensive performance that Hawks gave.
However claggy, sticky conditions and three poor attacking decisions saw the victory that was possible snatched away after a resilient Lambwath team scored two tries near the end of the second half. Dominance without points scored was the undoing of the Hawks squad. The team itself is still blending from two different age groups and has started to gel defensively. When the attacking nous and guile is more consistently applied the team will be very difficult to stop.

RETURNING PIGS COACH ISSUES RALLYING CRY IN RELEGATION BATTLE
ANDY Tyers has returned to Stocksbridge RUFC as coach on an interim basis and has issued a rallying call to his players, with the team threatened with relegation. It would take a miracle to get out of the situation that they are in, they are bottom of Yorkshire Three and the teams above them have games in hand.
However, Tyers wants his players to do all that they can to escape relegation and has asked them to reflect on their roles at the club. In a statement he has asked Look Local to print, Tyers said: “To all valued players, as you know, after a number of seasons of success and growth, we are experi-
encing some difficulties on the pitch during this season.
“How important is Stocksbridge Rugby to you? What does being in the first team mean to you? What more can you do for the team?
“Whilst there is no one person or event to blame, we are all in this together, and the first team coaching staff need your help.
“How can you help build the culture, camaraderie and team spirit we can thrive on? Are you prepared to lead the way with your commitment and drag others with you?
“We are at the point now where selection is hampered by non-availability, lack of contact or response from players. We have some questions for you.
“The club needs commitment like never before, or we are in grave danger of being relegated from our current standing, how can you help? What are you prepared to do to get back to the feel good factor of recent times? “Please answer these questions yourself and bring your team mates through. Together, we will all achieve more.
