A MAN was seriously injured after being hit by a metallic arm mounted on a truck as he walked down the street in Penistone.
James Purdie was walking home down High Street in Penistone at around 11.30am on Saturday when he suddenly found himself on the floor with blood running down his face. He assumed that he had tripped and banged his head, but witnesses saw that a flat bed truck had driven past and the protruding hydraulic arm had hit him in the head. The 46-year-old is now recovering at partner Samantha’s home in Wharncliffe Side after having two wounds glued shut and eight sutures in another cut on his head. He has a fractured skull and is on strong painkillers. The truck didn’t did stop after striking Mr Purdie and witnesses say that it went on to hit a blue van further down the road, still not stopping despite breaking a window and scraping the paintwork. “I’d only been for a cheese and onion pasty from Gregg’s. I knew they were bad for you but I didn’t expect this! “In a way I’m glad it happened to me, if it had been someone more fragile like an elderly person or a child, it could have been a much more serious situation. I’m on the mend now – everything seems to be in the right place so it should heal. I would like to thank everyone who helped me at the scene, the well-wishers and my family for looking after me.

MUSIC FESTIVAL REVIVAL A HUGE SUCCESS A REVIVAL of a music festival in Stocksbridge and district was such a success on Saturday that organisers are already planning for next year’s event.
Four hundred local musicians took part in the all-day Valley Festival copresented by Inyerface Arts and Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. Support for the event exceeded all expectations with more than 600 people attending. There were free performances throughout the day at the Venue and the Fox Valley bandstand and an evening concert at the Venue, hosted by the BBC’s Trisha Cooper, was packed. The 200 Saturday Night Live performers received a five-minute ovation after the massed choirs ended the biggest musical event in the district for 80 years with the Rita MacNeil classic Working Man.
The massed choirs ended the festival by singing Rita MacNeil’s Working Man. Photograph: Tom Harrison
Festival director Hilary Osborn said: “The Festival has been a fantastic project to work on and support from local people of all ages has been overwhelming. Our youngest performers were just three years old and the oldest in their 90s.
“Each performance from local schools, individuals and community groups especially the choirs was so different but polished and professional and really showed the talent that there is in the community. “It would be hard to pick any group out in particular as we all will have our own favourites. I personally loved the playground songs from Royd Nursery Infant School and the memories that they stirred up and a gentleman said to me that he found the performance of the youth group No Identity ‘haunting and uplifting’. This has been such a worthwhile project. I can’t wait to get started on planning next year’s event.” Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir secretary Rob Firth said: “It was wonderful to have so many young people and older people performing together and appreciating music of all kinds.” A music festival was started in the district in 1907 by local GP Dr Walter Midgeley Robertshaw and ran for more than 30 years. It is hoped that the festival will become an annual event for years to come, raising money for a fund to help young local musicians develop their talent.
Violent disorder between football fans BRITISH Transport Police officers investigating a large violent disorder on board a train at Barnsley are today appealing for witnesses to get in touch.
At approximately 12.15pm to 12.35pm on March 17, a number of Millwall football fans were on board a train which had originated from Sheffield.
Between Chapeltown and Barnsley there were multiple reports of a large disorder between the two rival teams.
When the service arrived at Chapeltown station, a number of Sheffield Wednesday fans also joined the train.
Officers are now looking to speak with anyone who was on board the train and hasn’t yet spoken with police.

Penistone Steel Valley Project and Jasper Prachek, a local rural craftsman, will be providing tools, equipment and materials in order to show people how to cleave oak wood using traditional woodland techniques. Kate Hughes, environmental project officer at Steel Valley Project, who is delivering the session commented: “This will be an interesting and inspiring workshop where you will gain the unique op-
Cleft wood has a strong structure as it is processed along the natural grain. This process is carried out using a froe which opens the wood where it naturally breaks away. This is easiest carried out and more effective with freshly cut wood. You will be able to have a go at using a range of tools and equipment commonly used by woodsmen utilising green wood to make a variety of objects such

Open rehearsal looks to attract new band members PENISTONE Community Wind Band are pleased to invite any interested musicians to an open rehearsal on Tuesday April 10 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in the drama studio at Penistone Grammar School ALC. The band was formed in 2013 and is doing very well with an established group of players, young as well as not so young,
and they would very much like to attract new members. This will be an opportunity to meet current members, have a bit of a blow and a chat over a few snacks! It is certainly very enjoyable and although the band works hard and accomplishes a lot, there’s time for a lot of fun and laughs.
It’s a relaxing break from the pressures of the week. The band is directed by Mr Brent Read – head of music at the school - and rehearsals are also held on Tuesday evenings at the same time and place during term time. If you’re interested in coming and would like a chat before deciding, please call Clare on 07884930123 or email mailpcwband@talktalk.net.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

What is the alternative? We vote blindly based on the party they represent or our perception of them in the media. I wouldn’t employ someone to cut our customers hair based on the people they’re associated with or whether they declare themselves the best candidate in the media.

I’m guessing that running a city is more complex than cutting someone’s hair (though I know the high skill levels needed to be a good hairdresser). Surely we need to know that our future councillors have an understanding of how public services are provided, are able to make decisions based on conflicting opinions and view points and have the ability to relate well to people from different backgrounds? Don’t we also need to know that they’ll stand up to their political colleagues if they were doing something detrimental to their ward? I hope any potential councillor reading this will publish their CV in the public domain, and enable voters to make an assessment on the most credible.
In the past year we’ve seen the collapse of the Sheffield city region devolution deal, a £2.2 billion contract continue to fail to improve a significant amount of our roads (while chopping down a lot of street trees), Valley Music Festival 2018 council tax rises, issues with social care spending and ongoing uncertainty about brexit. Considering all of these important issues, surely the time has come for I would like to say a big thank you to all the us (the people of Sheffield) to know the skills and people who have been involved in organising, experience of the individuals we’re electing. participating or enjoying the Valley Music Festival 2018. The event saw local people of all ages coming We’re less than two months of the next local election, together to play and sing music to huge crowds of plenty of time for candidates to update and publish people at The Venue and Fox Valley throughout the their CVs in the press , in paper and on social media. Surely in the interest of democracy and ensuring the weekend. best future for our city, it’s time for them to publish From local school children, to our award winning their CV’s and demonstrate that they have the skills to choirs and bands music filled the valley providing run our city well. What’s the alternative, self publicists enjoyment and entertainment. and people linked by association to a political party It was a great pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable run our city without the necessary skills? Not any event. I hope the organisers and participants more thank you. enjoyed the event as much as I did, and I look forward to this becoming an annual event. Local election In the past few weeks I’ve received leaflets from a number of candidates standing in this years local elections, telling me how bad or good Sheffield Labour are. One thing I can’t believe we never see is a copy of potential councillors CV.
Thanks to the people of Stocksbridge Standing in our local Lidl on Saturday morning collecting money for Marie Curie whilst wearing a silly yellow felt hat, which was supposed to resemble a daffodil, could have been a recipe for embarrassment and boredom but thanks to the friendliness of Stocksbridge people and their amazing generosity, I thoroughly enjoyed the two hours which I spent there.
On behalf of Marie Curie and the many people who I’m a hairdresser and the first thing we look at benefit from their work I would like to thank you all. before we employ someone is their CV. This gives Dorothy A Kirbyshaw
Local rockers Jackson Caged to play final gig AFTER releasing Entity, their debut album, local band Jackson Caged are heading to the O2 on Saturday March 31 to play their final show and they’re looking to go out with a bang. The band formed in 2006 and slowly climbed the ranks as a live band playing across the city, most recently at Corporation.
A combination of metal and rap, Jackson Caged is a throwback to the Rage Against the Machine style of the early noughties with all the energy and hard rock riffs included. The members have decided to go their separate ways but not before one final gig which promises to be their biggest yet. Doors open at 6.30pm with support
from Monkey Pig, North of the Fall and Blindfire. Tickets are available from Rock n’ Rose Tattoo in Stocksbridge, via Jackson Caged’s Facebook page or you can pay on the door.

Race night raises funds for choir
Local News
Bid for 4,000 new homes takes leap forwards SHEFFIELD City Council’s multi-million pound bid to enable over 4,000 new homes to be built on 34 brownfield sites in Sheffield has taken a significant leap forwards. The Sheffield bid has been shortlisted along with 44 others for funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. The bid is part of the council’s ‘brownfield first’ approach that seeks to build homes on land that has been used for development previously. The author-
ity will be awarded millions of pounds of extra funding for infrastructure, such as improved traffic junctions and flood defences, to encourage housing development on these sites which are often more difficult to develop. The new homes will be in and around the city centre. The council is welcoming this valuable opportunity to work with government on the strategic plan for the area.
The council now has until Autumn 2018 to develop a more detailed plan or funding bid. If the bid is successful, the first new homes would be built in 2020, with approximately 3,600 homes being built by 2025. This bid is the first stage of an ambitious plan to develop the Sheffield and Rotherham corridor that could deliver around 18,000 homes on brownfield land and much needed economic regeneration in this area that will benefit both Sheffield and Rotherham.
New post box for Burncross AT the end of last year the Post Office in Burncross was forced to closed, despite local opposition and claims that the post office was profitable and well-used. Gordon Webster (left) and John Howden take the bets A RACE night at the Castle Inn, Bolsterstone, raised a magnificent sum of £800 for Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir.
Gordon was assisted in taking bets by John Howden who also expertly and quickly calculated the odds.
The last-race auction pool was scooped by choir second tenor Chris Blackburn, of Chapeltown, winning £105.
The event was organised by choir vice-president Gordon Webster and Judith Horsfield of the Castle and attracted a big crowd.
Castle landlady Nicola George donated bottles of wine and prosecco for prizes and also gave the profits of catering.
Choir secretary Rob Firth said: “It was a great night. The choir is hugely grateful to Gordon, Judith, John and Nicola for making the event such a success.”
When the post office closed the local post box was also lost. However, Royal Mail has now agreed to create a new post box to once again serve the area. Local councillors and the local MP Angela Smith have been in direct conversation with Royal Mail and now their senior public affairs manager has agreed to the post box via a letter to Councillor Sykes. The post box will be installed within 12 to 16 weeks at a different site on Bevan Way.
Councillor Zoe Sykes said: “The closure of the post office not only meant an important local postal service was lost, but so to was the local post box – meaning many residents would have to walk a considerable distance just to post a letter. “I am delighted that this pressure has paid off and Royal Mail has now agreed to put a post box on the opposite side of the road to Burncross Post Office, where it formerly was. This means the new post box will be close to the local Co-op - where stamps can also be bought. “Whilst I am glad that Royal Mail have agreed to our request for a post box, the fight still goes on to get a Post Office once again located in our community.”

ON the face of it a 20 point margin seems somewhat at odds with the headline. However Sheffield Hawks travelled to a team that last season were 4 tiers above them in Junior Rugby League. Of the Hawks 13, four were under16 level, nine were under-17 and none were under-18. Their opposition were all under-17 bar five under-18 and one under-16. Yet, with 15 minutes to go the scores were 12-6 and the Albion team had to throw on their county and national representatives to see them through to victory. Hawks had opened the scoring after 3 minutes through Spencer Poppleton. Pat Wakefield, returning to the team for the first time this season, was instrumental in working the Hawks up the field and Poppleton finished from close range. Albion were stunned and, if the Hawks had achieved what they deserved, would have been much further ahead. Break after break annoyed the Albion team, as did some outstanding tackling from all 13. Will Burns had a brilliant cameo, tackled like a locomotive and broke for 70 metres, only being

stopped with a last ditch tackle. A head injury for Burns saw him removed after 12 minutes. 70 minutes with 12 players against a squad of 20 older, bigger players? No problem. The spine of the Hawks was excellent. Tom Clarke and Saul Hinchliffe played a disciplined, hard brand of simple rugby. Pat Wakefield and Spencer Poppleton ran their passing game well and made Keighley look pedestrian. Hawks completed all their sets, rarely dropped anything and played superbly. Two tries by Albion came out wide after numbers and pressure told. In the second half, playing up a steep slope, Hawks could have been forgiven for stepping off the gas however, if anything , their work rate and attitude was raised again. Robert Harden, Tom Clarke and Reuben Kateregga all had huge tackles to stop tries. Ed Measures was incredibly tough in the middle of the park and Max Blackburn was his usual irrepressible self. Yes, Albion scored tries, yes eventually Hawks gave way but only after they were down to 11 men after Jordan Hunt was taken off with a knock to the head. Even then, man of the match Reuben Kateregga still had the energy and strength to score the best try of the match with virtually the last play. At the end of the game all the Albion coaching staff and the referee praised Hawks for their skill, determination and spirit. This was an immense performance!
Ian Revitt OUGHTIBRIDGE WM LADIES 1-2 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN OUGHTIBRIDGE War Memorial Ladies put up a brave show but ultimately went out of the County Cup at the semi final stage with a narrow 2-1 loss to Huddersfield Town, who play two levels higher.
keeper Coran Wright stranded. Oughtibridge needed to stay in the game at this point and were relieved as Kate Mallan’s strike clipped the bar but then a chance fell to Lauren Turner to level but her super lob was just over.
With striker Codi Melia travelling back to Sheffield and unavailable to start and winger Laura Cain out injured, the War Memorial Ladies set up more defensively to frustrate their Women’s Premier League opponents and to a certain extent this worked, with Huddersfield limited to a few half chances whilst dominating possession, but they went behind on 21 minutes as Lucy Sowerby prodded home after her strike partner recovered a lost cause leaving home
It was important not to concede after the break but that’s exactly what they did to gift Huddersfield a soft second for Sowerby on 49 minutes and at that point it looked like there was just pride to play for. With Melia now arrived she came on to support Turner up front and they got a lifeline on 66 minutes as full back Katie Denton won a full blooded challenge on the half way line and crossed for Turner who made
life awkward for a hesitant keeper to slot home. The away team complained furiously about possible infringements in the build up and four bookings later the game re-commenced with Huddersfield clearly rattled to concede but despite some huffing and puffing Oughtibridge couldn’t build up enough steam to take it into extra time, Denton firing over a late half chance from Fran Godbehere’s excellent corner. So, ultimate disappointment from a great cup run which included a famous victory over Sheffield United in the third round but the Ladies should be proud to have put a small village club on the footballing map.
War Memorial score 10 Oughtibridge WMFC 10-1 Brinsworth Phoenix OUGHTIBRIDGE move into second place and now find themselves only one point behind the leaders Norton with a game in hand in the Blades Super Draw after a big win over Brinsworth Pheonix. Despite the opening 10 minute being fairly even, the home side then raced into a 5-0 half time lead. Callum Chambers opened the scoring when the impressive Danny Booth picked him out and it was Booth again who this time picked out Ross Brown whose glancing header gave the keeper no chance.
Evan Watson added a third, finishing off a great team goal, before two more from Brown including a fantastic lob from 30 yards completed his hat-trick. In the second half, it was more of the same. Matt Harrison and Josh Walker made it seven then superb strikes from Jordan Smith and full back Harley Scholey and another from Callum Chambers completed the scoring.
Narrow cup win for Villa Handsworth FC 0 High Green Villa FC 1 After extra time THIS was a great result for the Villa playing Handsworth on their own ground in the cup semi-final. Villa went close to taking the lead in the early minutes after hitting the bar. This was a typical semi-final with both teams risk-
ing nothing, creating a scrappy affair.
early in the first half of extra time leaving Villa with ten men.
The first half remained goalless and Handsworth, who are in a league above Villa, had an early chance shortly after the restart.
The winning goal came in the 120th minute when Matt Jacobs stabbed home from close range for Villa who deserved the win.
Villa took control of the game mid-way through the second half but could not force a winner.
Outstanding for Villa were defenders Robinson, Jeavons and Burns although the whole team worked hard throughout, in fact Parker in goal was rarely troubled.
Wilson was very unlucky to be sent off after a strong challenge

More misery for luckless Pigs

Mon - Fri 8.30 am - 5.00pm Sat 8.30 am - 12.00 noon STOCKSBRIDGE RUFC produced a much more determined and enthusiastic performance at the weekend, when entertaining league leaders and title favourites Northallerton. Sadly this was not enough to guide them to victory as the gallant Pigs slipped to their ninth defeat on the trot and stay rooted to the bottom of Division Three, five points adrift of their nearest rivals and staring relegation in the face. Forced into a couple of late changes due to cry offs, Jamie Christian was brought onto the wing and the evergreen Ben Senior moved in to the centre spot to partner Ben Wesby. A pack heavy bench was selected to combat North’s strengths. Stocksbridge started brightly and matched their opponents during the
Stocksbridge 0-38 Northallerton
early exchanges, but the frailties of the home side’s set pieces allowed North to gradually gain more possession and territory. Despite some heroic defending, North scored in the right corner after a good piece of play involving most of their team. A missed touch kick from a penalty again allowed North easy possession and they worked their way up the field to register their second try of the afternoon. It wasn’t all one way traffic and a sweeping move initiated by Ben Wesby, continued by Senior, gave Christian an opportunity, but the final pass went astray when a try was begging. North registered their third try of the half to leave the score Stocksbridge 19-0 down at the interval.
The coaching team asked for more control of the ball during the break and again there were encouraging signs of improvement from the home side. There had to be a reshuffle due to an injury to Jack Spencer with Wesby switching to stand off, forcing veteran Christopherson into the role of emergency full back. It was Wesby who released roaming number eight Ben Brown with a deft pass, Brown made 40 metres before off loading to Senior, who again made good ground, and a moral boosting try seemed inevitable. However, the North defence scrambled well to bundle Jones into touch. The quality of the visitors began to take its toll on the hard working home side and a dubious award of a penalty try extended the visitors’ lead.
Almost immediately, another hotly disputed try, where Jones was clearly impeded by an onrushing attacker, led to a small bout of handbags at five paces and this just about strangled the life out of the luckless Pigs. Although the Stocksbridge pack were regularly rotated with Andy Beal making a welcome return after injury, ultimately the Pigs were soundly beaten by a better team. The final score of 38-0 flattered the visitors, a point they acknowledged. Hard working front rower Gary Woodcock took the home side’s man of the match award with Senior and Aspin showing up well and Whitaker around the rim of most things good.
terim coach Andy Tyers saw some positive signs and improvements. “We are starting to enjoy our rugby again, it’s nice to see the boys enjoying their work. We are working hard on the basics during our training sessions and the team culture and spirit is growing.” Coaching duo Tyers and Keenan are committed to reviving the playing fortunes of the club. Stocksbridge will enjoy the Easter break to mend some of their injuries and return to action on April 7 with a short trip to Sheffield Medics in what promises to be a keenly contested match that Stocksbridge will be looking to win.
Whilst the Pigs remain rock bottom with relegation almost a certainty, in-

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels crashed to a 2-0 defeat after some poor defending in the first half at home to Newcastle Town. The result all but ends Steels’ play-off hopes. Arron Bott was the first to capitalise on the sorry Steels defence as he outmuscled Todd Jordan on the wing and then sprinted through and slammed the ball through the keeper’s legs and into the back of the net. Steels then slipped up again as a free kick in no mans land was taken short and with no wall, Bradbury was allowed to come forward into the penalty area and shoot. James Askey got a touch to steer the ball home. In the second half Steels could have had a penalty but their claims were waved away. However, overall Newcastle deserved their win and defended well over Samsung the game. QE49Q7FAM 49 inch QLED Ultra HD Premium HDR

PENISTONE Church FC beat Hemsworth Miners Welfare 3-1 in the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division on Saturday. Tom Brennan opened the scoring after just five minutes and Kieran Ryan made it 2-0 on 63 minutes. Two minutes later, Luke Danville pulled one back for Hemsworth but Nathan Keightley made sure of the three
points for Church three minutes from time. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “An excellent win today, it makes it 20 games undefeated at home since September 21, which is a great achievement. “It makes it only two losses in the last 21 games in all competitions. The players are doing brilliant at the moment and you could see that today.”
