26 BRAVE SHAVE FOR CHARLIE A FUNDRAISING event saw 26 local people ‘brave the shave’ to raise money for a charity which supports the families of children suffering from tumours and leukaemia.
The Friendship pub on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, hosted the event on Saturday March 24 and an amazing grand total of £5,239 was raised. The event was organised by the family of Charlie Leeks, a youngster with a brain tumour. In September 2015 at just four years old, Charlie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and hydrocephalus. He had emergency brain surgery to fit a VP shunt to drain the fluid from around his brain and also had a biopsy.

Charlie was put on watch and wait with threemonthly MRI scans for the next two years. At his last MRI in September 2017, his tumour had developed a blood supply and had started to grow, so it was time to start treatment.
He underwent eight hours of very risky brain surgery on December 20 to debulk his tumour and then in January he started an 18-month course of chemotherapy in a hope to stop the remaining tumour from growing again. Charlie is being treated at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which is currently building an amazing new haematology and oncology clinic that should be opening soon.
Charlie’s mum, Nicole Hirst, told Look Local: “We would like to thank every single person that donated or bought raffle tickets and to all the people who donated prizes, not forgetting a massive thank you the 26 people who braved the shave, including Charlie’s brother, Marshall, and all his best friends, to support Charlie through his treatment! “All the money raised will be donated to P.A.C.T parents association of children with tumours and leukaemia.”
