26 BRAVE SHAVE FOR CHARLIE A FUNDRAISING event saw 26 local people ‘brave the shave’ to raise money for a charity which supports the families of children suffering from tumours and leukaemia.

The Friendship pub on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge, hosted the event on Saturday March 24 and an amazing grand total of £5,239 was raised. The event was organised by the family of Charlie Leeks, a youngster with a brain tumour. In September 2015 at just four years old, Charlie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and hydrocephalus. He had emergency brain surgery to fit a VP shunt to drain the fluid from around his brain and also had a biopsy.

IN IT TOGETHER: Some of those that braved the shave in support of Charlie, left

Charlie was put on watch and wait with threemonthly MRI scans for the next two years. At his last MRI in September 2017, his tumour had developed a blood supply and had started to grow, so it was time to start treatment.

He underwent eight hours of very risky brain surgery on December 20 to debulk his tumour and then in January he started an 18-month course of chemotherapy in a hope to stop the remaining tumour from growing again. Charlie is being treated at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, which is currently building an amazing new haematology and oncology clinic that should be opening soon.

Charlie’s mum, Nicole Hirst, told Look Local: “We would like to thank every single person that donated or bought raffle tickets and to all the people who donated prizes, not forgetting a massive thank you the 26 people who braved the shave, including Charlie’s brother, Marshall, and all his best friends, to support Charlie through his treatment! “All the money raised will be donated to P.A.C.T parents association of children with tumours and leukaemia.”

Incredible success of Thorncliffe Leisure Centre revealed with over 400,000 visitors FIGURES released exclusively to Look Local have revealed that Thorncliffe Leisure Centre has had over 400,000 visitors since it first opened its doors in June 2016. From June 2016 to January 2018, a staggering 416,783 visits were made to the leisure centre, Sheffield City Council has confirmed. Also the number of children taking swimming lesson is double what it was when lessons were conducted at Chapeltown Baths. On transferring from Chapeltown Baths, the centre opened with 562 children in the Swim Academy but, as of January 2018, there are now a total of 1,077 children in the lessons scheme, this is an increase of 92%. The Thorncliffe Health and Leisure Centre also offer oneto-one tuition to children with disabilities and they are currently delivering lessons and rehabilitation to 70 children per week. As well as this the centre also works in partnership with a school for Children with Cerebral Palsy (PACES) who use the Teaching Pool for rehabilita-

tion purposes and also Woolley Wood school. West Ecclesfield Councillor Zoe Sykes was one of the local councillors involved in securing the centre in Thorncliffe and commented that she was “thrilled” by the amount of people enjoying the facilities and added. She said: “I hope that even more people come and see for themselves why so many are getting involved in activities at the centre”. Sheffield City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Leisure, Councillor Mary Lea, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that people throughout High Green and the local area have been using the leisure centre in such incredible numbers. “The response has been overwhelming and shows that the fight to get a state of the art centre in High Green was completely worth it. “When the leisure centre opened in June 2016 there was a target of getting the membership to 1,300 members by the end of March 2017. But due to the popularity of the facility, down to the successful promotion from staff at the centre, this target was hit in just the second month of opening!”

North Sheffield schools set to give up loving pop

A CAMPAIGN aiming to cut down the amount of sugary drinks consumed by children is working with three schools in the north of Sheffield. Children and young people in Sheffield are consuming more than two and half times as much sugar as the maximum recommended daily intake, most of which comes from sugary drinks. One can of Cola alone contains nine cubes of sugar, two more cubes than the recommended daily maximum of seven cubes for a teenager. Sugar is not necessary in the diet and when consumed in the form of sugary drinks can cause a whole host of health issues, from tooth decay, to obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Excess sugar intake has also been linked to certain cancers.

An easy way to reduce sugar intake is to cut out or reduce sugary drinks. Working with Food Active, Sheffield City Council are running a campaign to encourage people to Give Up Loving Pop (GULP). The GULP campaign will work with three schools: Forge Valley, Yewlands Academy, and Parkwood Academy to encourage young people and their families to switch from sugary drinks to water or milk. Students, teachers and parents are challenged to Give Up Loving Pop for four weeks. Schools will hold assemblies, and include in their PSHE lessons. All schools, students, teachers and parents can sign up for the GULP challenge at www. giveuplovingpop.org.uk/gulpchallenge

Richard Mintoff, PE teacher at Forge Valley School said: “Given the current push on banning sales of energy drinks to children and the imminent introduction of a sugary drinks tax we saw the GULP campaign as a fantastic way to raise awareness within Forge Valley. “Although some pupils understand the principles of a balanced diet, many are unaware of the sugar content of what they eat and drink. This can have an ever lasting impact on their health and well-being. “We are hoping that through the current media drive and our PSHE lessons our pupils become educated enough to make informed decisions about what they are drinking on a regular basis and it will have a positive impact on their lifestyle choices.”

Stocksbridge willow tit habitat creation project STOCKSBRIDGEBASED countryside management charity, The Steel Valley Project, has recently completed work on a £30,000 project to improve the habitat for the willow tit, one of the UK’s most threatened bird species. When the Sheffield Bird Study Group found a local population of the willow tit in the Stocksbridge area, funding was put in place and work started in 2017 to improve the habitat and help to re-colonise the area. Willow tits favour damp woodland, with young, thick vegetation providing insects, seeds and berries for food and a supply of dead wood which they use to create their own nest. A loss of this habitat, along with an increase in predators and competition from other birds, has contributed to a 94% decline in the willow tit population since the 1970s. To create the damp woodland environment which supports the bird,

the Steel Valley Project worked to dam up drainage channels and, where necessary, divert water so that it did not run off the hillside too quickly. Further work was also undertaken by the charity’s volunteer teams to build a series of ‘leaky dams’ where sections of trees are placed across a stream, slowing the flow of water. Some tree thinning has been carried out to create more suitable open habitat, promote the new growth of species favoured by the willow tit and allow for replanting of other trees such as elder, goat willow, hazel, hawthorn and alder. For the final phase of the project, the charity planted over 500 trees across three woodlands in Stocksbridge and Deepcar; Pot House Wood, Newhall Wood and Fox Glen. To further encourage willow tit’s to thrive in the area, a number of nest boxes were built and fixed to trees with rubber strips to prevent damage.

The birds like to excavate their own nest hole every year and will not use traditional nest boxes, so a little work was needed to mimic their preferred nesting site. This included adding a strip of birch wood to the face of the boxes and filling the insides with sawdust so that they appeared to be rotting logs. The funding for this extensive project was provided by Veolia Environmental Trust and Sheffield City Council. The work was carried out by The Steel Valley Project, and overseen by South Yorkshire Forest Enterprise Trust. Project Manager for the Steel Valley Project, Tom Newman, said: “This project has been a fantastic opportunity for our volunteers to learn a range a different skills whilst contributing to improving woodland habitat for this severely declining bird. We’ve already had reports of willow tits at all three of the project sites and hope to see their numbers increase as a result of this project.”

BEAST OF WOMBWELL DIES NOTORIOUS killer and rapist, Peter Pickering, has died just weeks after his latest conviction.

Pickering, 80, was found guilty last month of raping a teenager in Stocksbridge before he took the life of another teenager in Barnsley. And police have revealed that they were hoping to charge Pickering, nicknamed the Beast of Wombwell, with the murder of a third teenage girl. He admitted the killing of 14-year-old Shirley Boldy in 1972 and last week he was found guilty of the rape and false imprisonment of an 18-year-old woman. Pickering died last Saturday night after being taken ill in secure psychiatric accommodation in Berkshire. His death is not being treated as suspicious. West Yorkshire police say they strongly suspect Pickering was also responsible for the killing of Elsie Frost, 14, in 1965. Elsie was stabbed to death in a tunnel below a railway line in Wakefield. Interest in the

crime had risen again in 2015 when Radio 4 ran a programme called Who Killed Elsie Frost? Officers had interviewed him recently about the crime and expected he would soon be charged with her murder. It was during the investigation into Frost’s killing that police found a secure lockup facility in Sheffield that Pickering had kept since he was imprisoned in 1972. It contained a number of documents and a pair of handcuffs. West Yorkshire police said of the Elsie Frost case: “We strongly suspected that Peter Pickering was responsible for her murder. We had been liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service and it was our expectation that Pickering would be charged in due course.

Witnesses sought to Chapeltown armed robbery DETECTIVES investigating a reported armed robbery at the Co-op convenience store in the Chapeltown area of Sheffield are appealing for information and witnesses. At around 8.15pm on Sunday February 18, it was reported two men armed with a knife and blade had entered the store on Bevan Way in Chapeltown. The men, who had balaclavas covering their faces, made threats towards members of staff and forced them to open the store safe. A quantity of cash was stolen in the incident. An investigation is currently ongoing and offices have been working to review CCTV, identify possible forensic opportunities and make enquiries in the area.

“His unexpected death clearly means that will no longer happen. We have informed all those involved in the case of this development and we will be liaising with the West Yorkshire coroner as to what proceedings are now necessary.”

Detectives are now appealing for information and witnesses who may have been in the area at the time of incident to please report it. Any piece of information even if you believe it to be irrelevant could be useful in the investigation. If you have any information about the incident please call 101 quoting incident number 984 of 18 February. Anonymous information can also be given to Crimestoppers for 0800 555 111.

Rare Worrall trough needs rescue LAST Tuesday, March 27, the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Worrall hosted another meeting of the Worrall Environmental Group. At the meeting, Claire Watts, an officer of the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, spoke to the twenty-odd WEG members about the Partnership’s work and outlined future possibilities for grant aid for projects.

One scheme the group already have in mind is the restoration of an old trough halfway between the top of Walshaw Road and The Asplands on Boggard Lane. This is no ordinary animal drinking trough but a much rarer type certainly dating from long before the First World War, perhaps centuries before. This type were for washing clothes and perhaps young children. Though the group

has cleaned out the trough a number of times it is in a poor state because the drainage is blocked and the surrounding wall, gate and fences are in disrepair giving farm animals access to the water. Encouragingly, the landowners already support the idea of restoring the washing trough. The group’s members now need to firm up their plans

and see if they can secure funding to save this washing trough for future generations to see and consider what rural life was like before plumbed water let alone washing machines. For more information on the Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership, visit www.wildsheffield.com/ SheffieldLakeland or www. facebook.com/SheffieldLakeland

SOUTH Yorkshire fire officers are backing a national campaign to get more people to test their smoke alarms. The campaign, which will run from March 12 to April 6, will remind people that having working smoke alarms can save their life in the event of a fire in the home, and will encourage people to test their smoke alarms now and then regularly on a monthly basis. Messages will be promoted on the radio, online and on social media platforms. As part of the national advertising campaign, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is encouraging people in South Yorkshire to test the smoke alarms in their home (and those vulnerable friends/ relatives), and if not yet done, purchase and install smoke alarms at every level of the home. Smoke alarms can give someone the few extra seconds they need to escape in a fire. While the majority of homes across the country now have an alarm fitted, most people are not aware that the average alarm has a lifespan of just ten years and then needs replacing.

A single smoke alarm may simply not be enough. The recommendation is at least one at every level, but to ensure you can hear them throughout your home, particularly when asleep. Last year, in nearly half of all fires in the home where the smoke alarm did not give a warning the reason was that the alarm was not close enough to detect the fire. Missing or flat batteries were another major cause. Steve Helps, Head of Prevention and Protection said; “We know that smoke alarms saves lives. Analysis suggests you are at least eight times more likely to die in a fire in the home if you do not have any working smoke alarms” South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue is asking people to make sure that their alarms are up to date and up to the job. To keep your alarms in working order: • Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home; • Test your smoke alarms by pushing the button every month;

• Check that your smoke alarms are less than 10 years old; • Fit smoke alarms on landings and hallways and near or in bedrooms. Also consider in rooms which have electrical appliances – e.g. a heater or charger – or other fire risks; • Don’t put alarms in or near kitchens and bathrooms where smoke or steam can set them off by accident. • Replace your smoke alarms every ten years • Take a moment to check on your loved ones who may need help to test their smoke alarms to ensure they’re fully protected. Steve Helps said; “For most of us, there is nothing more important than keeping our loved ones safe and secure. So if your alarm is getting past its best or your top floor is missing an alarm of its own, fit new ones, test them on the first of every month and protect your loved ones at all times.”

SYMPATHY AND FUNERAL FLOWERS

Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Local election

I was moved by Mrs Prince’s letter in Look Local. This prompted me to write of all the local help and support I have received from the Christ Church in Stocksbridge.

Anne Fletcher’s letter in Look Local 29 March 2018 makes a strong case for candidates in the local elections on the 3rd May to publish their CVs in the public domain. Having been a typical armchair critic of politicians over a number of years, I took The Social CafÊ which is held every Monday in the the plunge two years ago to get involved in local annex to the church has been very important to me politics, and it certainly was eye opening! over the past 18 months. Charity calls on hikers to go the distance to fight heart disease Hundreds set to make strides in the British Heart Foundation’s research at the charity’s Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

Entries are now open for the BHF’s ultimate hiking challenge - the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on July 7. Join hundreds of supporters in the fight against heart disease by taking on the famous Yorkshire Three Peaks, covering 24 miles and over 5,000 feet of climbing. As you take on this challenge, you will tackle rocky terrain and steep climbs, whilst enjoying the stunning sights of the Yorkshire Dales.Â

Last year, those who took on the challenge helped raise over £142,000 towards the BHF’s life saving research into how we can prevent, diagnose and treat heart and circulatory conditions, which is the cause of more than a quarter (26%) of all deaths in the UK.

willing to take on the challenge. “A BHF event is the perfect way to support the nation’s heart charity, help save lives and improve your own heart health at the same time.â€? The BHF relies on the generosity of its supporters to fund life saving research. To support the nation’s heart charity, sign up to join the fight today; entry fees are ÂŁ35, you must be 16 years old to take part and under 18’s must be accompanied by an adult.

The BHF has a calendar of over 70 events taking place across the UK this year, including runs, treks, swims and cycle rides. Andy Coles, BHF Event Manager, said: “We’re really looking forward to this year’s Yorkshire Three Peaks event and hope to see many enthusiastic people eager and

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

ng Feature The Sweet Taste of Summer SPRING is finally here and it’s time to start thinking about planting for the summer – and perhaps even giving fruit growing a go! Of all the popular summer fruits, strawberries are one of the easiest to grow in containers and you can grow them on a patio, balcony, windowsill or even in a hanging basket. Strawberries are compact plants, so even gardeners with limited space can have a few pots on the go positioned close to the kitchen or outdoor seating area for convenience. By growing them in pots you can provide strawberries with the perfect conditions – rich, fertile, well draining soil in a sunny position and as they are growing off the ground they are less likely to suffer from disease or damage by pests. There are two types of strawberries you can go for – Summer-fruiting varieties or perpetual strawberries. Summer-fruiting are the largest and most popular. They have a short by heavy cropping period over two to three weeks any time from early to mid-summer. Perpetual strawberries produce smaller crops of fruits from early summer to early autumn. The crops are not as heavy as the summerfruiting ones and the fruits are smaller in size. You can grow strawberries in a variety of different containers, but the advantage of growing them in a strawberry planter – an urn shaped pot with pocket holes down the side – is that they look attractive, a good sized pot holds a fair number of plants and they produce the highest yield. You will need one plant per side opening and three or four for the top (if you are growing strawberries in an ordinary container then

just three or four plants will do). Fill the bottom of the pot with compost that contains a slow release fertiliser and continue to fill the container as you plug each hole with a strawberry plant, lightly patting the plant into the soil as you fill. Finish off your strawberry planter with the three to four plants on top. Make sure your containers get at least six to eight hours of sun so that you will get plenty of flowers and fruits and if the sunlight is coming from only one direction, rotate the container every three to four days if possible. Water your strawberries whenever the soil feels dry about an inch below the surface, and when there are long periods of hot, dry weather you may need to water daily. If pots and containers are just part of your outside space then here are some gardening tips for this month from the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society): * Tie back climbing and rambling roses * Keep an eye out for pests and keep weeds under control * Start feeding plants in the garden from now to the end of the summer * Sow seeds directly into the soil so they can flower in the summer * Sow vegetable seeds directly into prepared beds * Plant summer flowering bulbs * Sow new lawns or repair bare patches * Prune shrubs and trees * Apply mulch or manure to flower beds and pots * Prepare hanging baskets

Lifesaving device provided to Oughtibridge by sports foundation in memory of tragic footballer OUGHTIBRIDGE has a new defibrillator thanks to a foundation set up in memory of a footballer who passed away whilst playing the game he loved. The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation was founded after the 24-year-old passed away whilst playing for Shaw Lane Football Club in 2016. He was playing a cup game against Brighouse Town FC when he suffered a cardiac arrest just over an hour into the game. It was later found that he had an undiagnosed heart condition that presented no symptoms other than a little bit of dizziness during training in the month before he died. The dizziness was attributed to being dehydrated. Daniel was a Hull boy who, after attending university, started work for BHP Chartered Accountants in Sheffield. He had only been at work for a week and had moved into his flat with his girlfriend just three weeks before. His death has been totally devastating for his family and friends. Daniel’s parents, Barry and Gillian Wilkinson, started the foundation and they use donations to provide sports clubs with defibrillators. Now, Forge Lane Sports Club in Oughtibridge has one of the lifesaving device. Stocksbridge Park Steels juniors and Sheffield Canoe Club have shown their appreciation with a £700 donation towards the cause.

Church come from behind to win DESPITE having their Easter game postponed due to poor conditions, Penistone Church FC played last Tuesday, beating Pontefract Collieries 2-1 away from home in the Toolstation NCEL County Senior Premier Division. Church had to come from behind after Aaron Moxam had given the home side a 1-0 lead at the break.

But goals from Danny Howes and Kieran Ryan after the restart handed Church all three points. After the game Church manager Ian Richards said: “Firstly, credit to Pontefract Collieries, you can see why they’re up there and the team to beat. “They have a method and a way of playing that’s very effective for them, home or away they’re very clear in how they want to play and set up - they have conviction to sticking that.

“It’s similar in a way to how we want to play in terms of the system and style we believe in what we have and we weren’t going to change it tonight even though we were at a tough ground against a team who had won 12 on the bounce we weren’t going to change what we do and it worked for us. A huge credit to every single player from start to finish to night.”

Peter Kenney appointed Park Steels president STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels FC have announced the appointment of lifelong Steelman Peter Kenney to the role of president at the club. Peter started as a player for the steelworks under 18 team and then spent many years pulling on the Steels shirt for the reserve side, before hanging up his playing boots and moving onto other tasks within the club.

In-between, Peter had to do his national service at the age of 21, where he joined the Navy and served as an engineers clerk. Peter joined the committee in 1988 and has played a major part in putting Stocksbridge Park Steels FC onto the nonleague football scene. For over 30 years Peter has been helping with all sorts of ground maintenance and repairs, spending many hours with a paintbrush or hammer

and nails fixing and keeping the ground safe. He also joined his wonderful wife Marina, along with Janet, to run the snack bar for the spectators, and food and drinks for the players and visiting committee members Peter and Marina are now the face of Stocksbridge hospitality as they play hosts to visitors and dignitaries who come to the Steels home fixtures, and they do make a super pot of tea!

With huge amounts of overnight rain the game would surely have been at risk of postponement if not for the superb 3G pitch. A decent Easter home crowd turned up to support their side which was nice to see in such dismal conditions. The general rule of thumb when playing opposition in such good form is to exert pressure on the ball through hard work and application. This is Samsung exactly whatQE49Q7FAM the Steels had done and 49 inch QLEDorganised Bedreally nullified a well worth team. Ultra HD Premium HDR

TV Apart from 1500 twoSmart or three in-swinging corners, admirably dealt with by Steels goalkeeper Dave Reay the game was largely a midfield affair.

Steels always looked a threat on the counter though and certainly kept possession well with good passages BCF148W of play, butServis without really penetrat48cm Frost Free four. Both ing the Bedworth back Fridge Freezer through an defences were dominant even first half overall. It was on 55 minutes when the game livened up. Bedworth had started really well and were on the front foot forcing corners. A corner on the right to Bedworth was swung in left footed and cleared by Steels to beyond the edge of the box where the ball was picked up and immediately spread out to Blackmore wide on the right. Blackmore’s cross was stabbed home at the far post as the Steels defence appealed for offside. Steels’ reaction was good with Tom Charlesworth’s tempting low right wing cross fizzing past an out-

stretched Joe Lumsden who was running in towards goal. Brodie Litchfield’s drive from 25 yards was hit well but was straight at the goalkeeper. There was no real pressure on the ball by Steels when Parrot’s wayward pass to his defence from midfield on 65 minutes was picked up by Lumsden who couldn’t believe his luck as he advanced quickly on goal. His first shot was parried by Dan Crane the Bedworth goalkeeper and back to Lumsden whose second attempt was scuffed over Crane bouncing off the surface up onto the bar for Scott Ruthven to pounce onto the rebound from four yards, making it 1–1. The elation of equalising was soon quashed when Steels were back behind conceding a cruel own goal just minutes later. A quick break down Steels left side saw a dangerous low cross from Parrot not dealt with by Liam McFadyen at the front post, hitting his right shin as he slid forward to hook the ball clear. In fairness to McFadyen, who hadn’t put a foot wrong all the game, the balls on this surface really zip at you, but maybe he will look at the clearance again and go with his left foot next time. As Steels pressed forward in search of the equaliser the Bedworth lads looked comfortable dealing with attacks. On 85 minutes Christie was left alone in the box and had too much time to drive a left foot shot through a crowded box into Dave Reay’s bottom left hand corner giving him no chance. All in all a bad day at the office which could easily have gone either way with nothing really to choose between the two sides.
