FOOTBALL MATCH SEEKS TO TACKLE MALE SUICIDE IN NORTH SHEFFIELD A CHARITY football match to help raise awareness of local male suicides will take place at Bracken Moor Sports Club at the end of this month. The Collins Cup charity football match will kick off at 12pm on Sunday April 29 and will feature Ecclesfield Eagles playing against a team made up of players from various local clubs. Male suicide is a problem which has affected many families in the north of Sheffield in recent years and local man Lee Shepherd has organised the match in a bid to help. The match is in memory of Garin Collins, a friend of the event’s organiser, Lee Shepherd. Garin, originally from Edinburgh, was living in Australia but sadly took his own life in February this year. He was a keen footballer, so the match is a fitting tribute. Lee says that he is also aware of a number of other male suicides locally in recent years and wants to do something to help raise awareness of the issue. All proceeds from the day will go to Sheffield-based charity SToRMS
Garin Collins took his own life in February 2018 and was a keen footballer.
(Strategies to Reduce Male Suicide). As well as the match, entry to which is by donation, lots of other things will be happening on the day. There will be a raffle and auction with some top prizes, including jewellery provided by Sorelle, signed shirts from Manchester City, Sheffield Wednesday and United, Rotherham United and Barnsley.
There are lots of other great prizes on offer too, such as a boxing glove signed by heavyweight boxers Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker. A number of local businesses and sports clubs have donated other prizes and the event is sponsored by Forge Sheffield and Saxton Mee. A cake sale, pie and peas, tea and coffee and a sweet stall will also be available and it will be an event for all of the family. SToRMS is a small organisation set up in July 2015. It is a fund within the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, a registered charity whose goal is to improve the lives of local people.
It was set up in memory of Dan McAllister who unexpectedly took his own life in May 2015 aged 19. Suicide is the biggest killer of men and women under 35 in the UK. The Office for National Statistics revealed that 5,668 people took their own life in Great Britain in 2016. Of these, 4,287 were men. Men are three times more likely than women to take their own lives. SToRMS’ mission is to reduce young male suicides by facilitating widespread open discussions about suicide and promoting mental well-being and emotional resilience from an early age. They also aim to challenge gender stereotypes that prevent men from accessing help and highlight the relationship between alcohol and mental wellbeing. The event page can be viewed at https://www.facebook.com/ events/158944591397843/ and if you want to donate to the Just Giving Fund, visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/lee-paulshepherd. MAN WARNS DOG WALKERS AFTER VIOLENT GRAB ATTEMPT A PENISTONE man says he sustained a number of injuries fighting off two men who tried to snatch his dog. John Hall was walking his 18week-od puppy, Millie, near Castle Dam when he was approached by two men.
left with a number of injuries from the struggle. He told Look Local: “When I confronted them it turned into a fight against two of them and I got quite a lot of injuries.
They successfully managed to grab the lead off Mr Hall and then tried to make their escape.
“I want to warn other dog walkers about what happened so they’ll be more careful when they’re out with their dogs. They got into an old, dark grey Ford Escort van.”
However, Mr Hall was determined to get his dog back and confronted them. When they wouldn’t back down, a fight ensued and although Mr Hall did get Millie back, he was
Mr Hall made the community aware of what happened on the Community Action Penistone page on Facebook and has received plenty of support.
He said: “I want to say thank you to everyone for your messages and sharing my post as people need to know this is going on. “I felt like I’d been hit by a train the morning after and my head felt like it’d been used as a football. “I took Millie back out on a little steady walk to show her everything is OK as she’s not quite been herself since, but she’s perked up again now. “I hope what happened to me does not put people off taking their dogs out as it’s one of the greatest things to do.”
Have you seen Judith? JUDITH Caldwell, aged 67, is currently missing from her home in Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham. Judith has a slim build, 5’1 tall, wearing a green coat and black jeans. She has with her two dogs, a red setter and a brown and white spaniel. She left home at 9:30am on Monday April 9 2018. If you see Judith please telephone South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 864 of 09/04/2018.
Fundraiser for Charlie ANOTHER fundraising event for Charlie Leeks will be held at Stocksbridge Community Leisure Centre on Sunday April 22 from 9am to 12 noon. The free event will feature archery, penalty shootout, bouncy castle, parachute play, yoga, spinning bikes and trampolining. All proceeds from tea, coffee and ice cream go to Chalie’s fund. Donation buckets will also be present. In September 2015 at just four years old Charlie was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and hydrocephalus, he had emergency brain
surgery to fit a VP shunt to drain the fluid from around his brain and also had a biopsy. Charlie was put on watch and wait with threemonthly MRI scans for the next two years. Unfortunately, at his last MRI in September 2017, his tumour had developed a blood supply and had started to grow, so it was time to start treatment. He underwent eight hours of very risky brain surgery on December 20 to de-bulk his tumour and then in January he started an 18-month course of chemotherapy in a hope to stop the remaining tumour from growing again.

Teenagers ‘on rampage’ in High Green and Chapeltown DO you know who the teenagers are who appear to take pleasure in causing mayhem in High Green and Chapeltown areas? On Easter Sunday at around 5pm, they tried to gain entrance into St Mary’s Church Hall, thankfully they did not succeed. However, they did turn on the outside tap by the hall and left the water running. This water tap is for parishioners to use for their vases on their loved ones graves. CCTV footage was captured and these photos were posted

on St Mary’s Facebook and their names were soon being quoted and passed onto the police. Also reported on Facebook were the chaos and damage in the area that unruly teenagers were responsible for at the Packhorse Inn, Milgrove Crescent, Foster Way and Stone Inge just to name a few. On Holland Road, High Green, a blue bin was set alight by teenagers and they tried to unlock gates at the local reservoir and caused pandemonium at the One Stop Shop at Angram Bank.
A spokesperson from the church told Look Local: “The hall is on a water meter this means the parish has to pay for it. The water was running down the ramp which is used to gain access to the hall for those who have difficulty in climbing the steps. “Remember, this is winter and the weather has been cold so the water became ice. If someone had fallen and injured themselves, whose fault would it have been? “High Green and Chapeltown residents are becoming sick and tired of this behaviour and the fact that the parents of unruly youths do not appear to care.”

Spamalot of coffees needed 16 to 19 at The Montgomery. Julie said: “It’s a real pleasure running the tuck shop on a Tuesday and Thursday night, we both really enjoy doing it. Not only do we get to sit and watch the rehearsals which are incredibly funny, we also get to see the show progress week on week, socialise with the cast who are a really lovely bunch of people and raise much needed funds for the Society – even if it’s a 50p cuppa every week, every little helps!
JULIE Townend and Stuart Tingle from Burncross are in charge of keeping the cast of Monty Python’s Spamalot fed and watered during rehearsals, a job which they have now done for the past three years. Spamalot, lovingly ripped off from the 1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail, retells the legendary tale
of King Arthur and his (misfit) Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. The musical features many of the classic films best bit as well as original material written by Eric Idle and all kinds of shenanigans including dancing girls, fish slapping, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rab-
bits, shrubberies and coconut shells. True Pythonites will recognise the familiar tunes ‘Knights of the Round Table’, ‘Brave Sir Robin’ but everyone will know, and probably sing along to, ‘Always look on the Bright Side of Life’!
“We’ve even started opening up before rehearsals start so people can come and sit and have a chat beforehand, it’s a really friendly society and we’re proud to be a part of it! I just need to figure out how to stop Stuart singing along now!”

FOLLOWING her question to the Defense Minister in October last year asking for a fourth HMS Sheffield, Angela Smith MP has this week joined with other civic leaders in writing to the Secretary of State asking he use his influence with the Royal Naval Ship Naming Committee to ask that one of the
three remaining type 26 ships be named after the city. In her letter, Angela, said: “Given the fine history and the city’s close connections with previous ships, I believe it would be appropriate if one of the remaining three remaining vessels of the ‘City Class’ be
given the name Sheffield. “I know the whole city is united in calling for another Sheffield and I cannot emphasis enough how pleased the city would be to have a fourth Sheffield.” She also comments on how a former ship gained the nickname the ‘Shiny Sheff ’ be-
cause of her stainless steel fixtures made in the city, including the ship’s bell, made by Hadfield’s. Angela added: “The city and the Royal Navy has always enjoyed a close association. With a new class of ships now being named after the principle cities of the UK, it would be

Biggest crowds yet for The Outdoor City Weekender MORE people than ever turned out to watch the annual Outdoor City Weekender, an action-packed three-day festival that celebrates Sheffield’s impressive outdoor offer.
Jon Dallow, who runs the event along with Nick Hamilton of the This is Sheffield bike blog, said: “A stellar field of athletes and pro riders rocked up to the Howard Street Dual, drawn by the magnet effect of Steve Peat.
Now in its third year, the Weekender boasts four headline events, and a host of fringe activities that appeal to all ages and abilities.
“Not only did it bring this great sport out of the woods for everyone to enjoy, but it also built on Sheffield’s reputation of hosting ‘the biggest littlest race in the world’, the annual Steel City Downhill in Grenoside Woods, which returns on 5 May.
More than 1,000 people lined seven of Sheffield’s steepest hills to cheer on the cyclists of The Magnificent Seven cycle challenge, and crowds at the inner-city mountain bike race, the Howard Street Dual, were double those of last year. It wasn’t just those watching the events in person who enjoyed everything the Weekender had to offer, as live streaming brought the action to a much wider online audience. The Howard Street Dual has had more than 12,500 views on YouTube, and the Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF) final has received over 45,000 views, with that figure continuing to rise. More women also took part in the Weekender this year. The Howard Street Dual, which took place in the city centre on Saturday 10 March, saw 17 female riders take to the city centre dual slalom track, in comparison to just eight last year. It was local rider Carrie Poole who once again topped the podium and, in the men’s category, last year’s winner Brett Penfold narrowly missed out to local legend Steve Peat in the nail-biting final, with a stewards’ enquiry needed to confirm the result.
“Sheffield’s MTB scene is a close-knit community but it is accessible to all and doesn’t require you to be a top athlete to get involved. So why not get on your bike and go have fun? There’s a wealth of MTB trails, bridleways and facilities that is the envy of many right on our doorstep.” In The Magnificent Seven cycling challenge on the Sunday, 107 riders (24 more than last year) – made up of 14 women, 55 men and 38 veterans – took on the 26-mile route, which included seven of Sheffield’s toughest “The racing was strong from the start and the senior men’s category was especially hill climbs. fierce with a great battle between the CyCompetitors came from all over the cling Sheffield pairing of Kieran Savage country to take part but it was three and Joe Clark and 2017 winner Andy Niriders from Sheffield who took the chols riding for B38 Underpin Racing. top prizes; Kieran Savage, Rebecca “I was pleased to see Sheffield rider ReGoodson and James Allen. becca Goodson win the women’s category Event organiser and secretary to and especially proud to see my friend and Sheffield’s largest cycle club, SheffRec team mate James Allen win every climb CC, Marc Etches, said: “This year’s to claim the vets category. Outdoor City from the summit. It was the perfect finish to a unique event only available in Sheffield.” At the 13th Sheffield Adventure Film Festival (ShAFF), many of this year’s strongest films featured women and almost one third of the 112 films had female leads, or were made by women – more than ever before. And at the Rab Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF), two Sheffield residents fought off a world-class pool of 134 female competitors to make the podium, with Michaela Tracy in second and Leah Crane in third.
The Outdoor City website also received even more hits than last year’s recordbreaking year, with more than 6,000 visits to the site from hundreds more users over the course of the 2018 Weekender. It’s clear from these results that the website is an increasingly useful resource for all those seeking information about Sheffield’s impressive outdoor offer. The Outdoor City Weekender launched the city’s calendar of outdoor adventure for 2018. THE community of Oughtibridge have come together to raise an initial £999 to purchase a life saving Community Public Access Defibrillator (CPAD) for the village. In early February, John Wood was enjoying a drink in the local pub when one of his friends took ill and very suddenly passed away. The events of that night have led John and his friends to seek to raise funds to buy a
defibrillator accessible to the local community in memory of their friend. Defibrillation and good quality bystander CPR are the two biggest factors in survival rates from cardiac arrest and it is hoped that by funding a CPAD it will one day make the difference to someone in the community. The initial £999 will be used to apply for a community grant for a subsidised cost form the Yorkshire Ambu-
lance Service Charitable Fund and if successful would provide the CPAD and the locked cabinet. The fundraising will continue above the £999 to enable the group to provide the ongoing costs of maintenance, replacement pads, batteries and insurance. Any extra money raised could potentially fund a second defibrillator and to put back into the community by provid-
ing CPR and basic life support events. They’ll be hosting a fundraiser at Oughtibridge War Memorial cricket ground on April 20 from 12pm to 4pm with a bake sale, raffle and the bar will be open too. If you can’t make the event but would like to donate, visit https:// www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/Defibrillator-for-Oughtibridge

Easter fun at golf club Learn about World War 1 training camp
BOLSTERSTONE Archaeology and Heritage Group will be taking a trip through history on their next meeting as they host a talk on the Redmires WW1 training camp on Wednesday April 18. Helen Ullathorne will be attending to tell the group more about the Redmires WW1 training camp she has been studying and surveying, with the help of University of Sheffield students. The importance of the site was only recently recognised and in 2014 it was scheduled to protection it, because of its extent and the way it showed the development of trench defence works.
The trench complex was created by the Sheffield City Battalion, men recruited from the university and commerce – over 1,000 moved to the camp in December 1914. Now rough pasture, the layout of the earthworks is still visible on the ground, such as the zigzag trench in the photo. If you are interested in learning more about archaeology, come along and find out more. The group is not only arranging talks, but also practical sessions. It recently had a very successful flint workshop where we were able to study, identify and try to
draw flints found on the moors in this area. Flint is not found locally so these have been brought in to use as tools and weapons long ago. The group also carry out surveying of local sites and lead walks to find out more about local heritage. The Redmires talk starts at 7.30pm in the meeting room of Christchurch on Manchester Road, Stocksbridge. Admission is £2 including refreshments.
STOCKSBRIDGE Golf Club hosted a successful programme of family activities over the Easter weekend, kicking off with Graham Lindley on Saturday evening. Easter Sunday was a day of traditional Easter family fun had with a host of competitions.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:
• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans Having a Will in place ensures your assets go to who you choose. It makes the whole process much easier for the people you leave behind and it puts in black and white exactly what you want to happen, avoiding any misunderstanding or arguing. Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able
to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation
to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and Collective Legal Solutions are members of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.
Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane! Mrs Boyle and family, Ecclesfield

Express; which relates that: “One of the pretty sights at Oughtibridge just now is the foam fretted stream of beautiful water that rushes down the rocky channel in Cockshutts lane. This is the overflow from Oughtibridge Water Works. A stranger seeing this, and the much finer streams that take Oughtibridge in their course, would be surprised to learn that a large proportion of the villagers suffer from scarcity of water in the summer months, yet such is the deplorable fact. A very small proportion of houses have water on the sink, and the introduction of baths in houses is a startling innovation, but I see baths are one of the convenient accessories in the new houses in course of erection by Mr. J. While cogitating on the Oughtibridge water supply, Publishing does not mean we agree with the content. I wonder if the inhabitants are aware that their water is used for medicinal purposes. Of course, I’m not taking into account the quantity of “aqua pura that the local practioners use, but the case of a poor fellow suffering from a bad leg, who was recommended by his doctor to bathe the diseased member in a stream of spring water. This man, knowing of no better or handier stream than the Cockshutts spring, used it daily for some time, and ultimately a cure was effected. One cannot imagine that this grateful man will keep the cause of his recovery secret, and the Oughtibridge water may acquire an enviable or unenviable notoriety, just as people take it, or apply it. The majority may Lack of buses when it snows object to drink diluted bad leg, but considering the length of piping that the water has to pass through, When I went shopping to Asda on Sunday there is a possibility that it will clear itself, like is February 18, I was waiting for my bus - the number said the river Don water does in the country below one Stagecoach from Chapeltown to High Green Sheffield. outside the Pizza Hut. The message of this story is Next time you drive o’er Pearoyd Bridge And you think the air grows cold Look behind you! You’re not alone! A monk’s returned from days of old! Who knows for how long he’s lain Underground in peaceful sleep Through sun and wind and snow and rain. Five hundred or a thousand years Until the diggers came. He gave his life to solemn prayer And silent contemplation. Awoken! Now he is aware And vents his indignation. Angry is his restless spirit Through trees and fences gliding, Musty smell his habit If in your car he’s riding. His face is hidden ‘neath his hood He leaves no prints behind Just he against man’s progress stood But now he feels resigned. And sssh, You’ll also hear the sound Of children dancing round and round. Drifting in and out of sight Ghostly spirits rule the night.

Local Notices national party. I’m sure a lot of us feel there are loads of ways to improve things in the area. Look at the state of a lot of the local roads. The council are six years into a £2.2 billion contract that’s meant to be improving them. Driving from Ecclesfield up to Sheffield Lane top the other day, I couldn’t believe the number of pot holes! Wouldn’t it be good to have a council and a local councillor that are capable of making sure the jobs getting done properly and money not being wasted as it seems to be at present. Wouldn’t it also be good to have a council capable of renegotiating that contract so that we’re paying less and not straddling our grandchildren with the debt of repaying contracts like that one. Potential councillors, please can we see your C.V.’s so we can see if you’re up to the job of running our city?

Thanks to Mr Levery for publishing his C.V., refreshing to see that we do have people with a broad range of skills and experience prepared to stand for election.
The question lots of us would be interested to know, why other candidates haven’t done so yet? My 16Workshop poem year-old niece is just applying for jobs and managed to put one together in less than an hour, what’s stopping council candidates from doing the same? New post box I read with interest the article about a new post box on Bevan Way, Chapeltown. I assume neither Angela Smith, Cllr Zoe Sykes or for that matter some residents near Bevan Way know the area. There is a post box 50 yards or a three-minute walk away from the site of the old Costcutter! It is at the garage on Burncross Road near the surgery. Why is a new one required? A Post Office, yes. A post box, no. This post box has been at the site for many years. Rosemary

Fitness & Beauty MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT’S AROUND YOU
THE importance of regular exercise and a good diet is well-known and both are documented as aides to a long and healthy life. While most of us can manage the diet side of things perfectly well and fit our nutritional needs around our lifestyle, when it comes to doing the same with exercise many of us are sadly lacking. Contrary to popular belief, exercise does not have to be regimented or expensive, requiring us to sign up for numerous classes or hours at the gym; one of the simplest, best and cheapest forms of regular exercise is walking, something most of us do every day without even thinking about it. Walking can easily be fitted into a daily routine by most, whether you’re a stay-at-home Mum, a busy professional or a retiree. It can be done with others, alone, or even with your dog, and doesn’t require a personal trainer. It improves lung and heart function and strengthens the muscles in the lower body, and because walking
is a load-bearing activity it can help with poor bone density, making it particularly beneficial for older people. In short, we can all benefit from walking.
There are many opportunities in the day to take a walk and it doesn’t have to be chore. Starting a walking programme is as easy as walking to the local shops and walking the children to school rather than driving or taking a bus. Begin by taking a walk in your lunch break and see the increase in your mental performance at work during the afternoon, or walk in the evening and experience a much better quality of sleep. Walking in open countryside or the local park adds another pleasant dimension to your exercise. But while you take in the beauty of the local flora and fauna along your chosen route, focusing on the quality and distance of your walking can dramatically benefit your wellbeing and increase fitness.
After a few weeks of easing yourself into the habit, try to walk more briskly and add some uphill stretches into your route for extra benefit. This will help burn off calories and increase cardiovascular fitness, and once a good level has been reached, try power walking at as fast a pace as you can manage during the middle section of your walk. Enjoy striding out, getting fresh air in your lungs and appreciating your surroundings as you go along. You will soon find that you start to look forward to your daily walk, and you will certainly notice the difference in your general health. At this point you may consider joining a rambling club to enjoy your new found exercise with others. Ramblers meet for regular walks in stunning surroundings, and tackle walks for all levels of fitness. You may even find you make some new friends to share your new exercise regime with. The Stocksbridge Walkers are Welcome group is a great place to start.

Gareth Cooke and Matt Robinson in record-breaking form at Manchester TWO Penistone Footpath Runners club records were broken at the Manchester Marathon at the weekend, with Gareth Cooke bettering his own senior male club record to 2:36.22 whilst Matt Robinson added to his Hall of Fame entry of the V45 record by taking over seven minutes off the V50 record in a time of 2:57.54. For both runners, their recordbreaking was underpinned by the dedication of consistent training. Over 20 members took part in the Sheffield Half Marathon on
Sunday. First back in 35th place overall and fourth V40 in 82:34 was Damian Kilpin. Marvellous Martin Ball ran a course best 86:06. Julie Moxon ran a personal best of 103:48 whilst Bill Phillips was sixth V65 in 103:40. At the Pendle Hill Race in Lancashire run over 4.5 miles with 1,500 foot of ascent, Ian Charlesworth was 59th in 43.07. Father and son Steve and Lee Storey took part in Elterwater fell race in Cumbria, run over three miles with 1,000 foot of climbing. Lee was 44th in 34.34
whilst Steve finished 52nd and first V60 in 35.25. At the Hornsea Third Marathon in East Yorkshire, Keith Gordon finished sixth V65 in 73.39 whilst Dave Needham was seventh V70 in 83:51. The first race in the ever-popular Spencers Dash series took place last week, with PFR scooping the podium places in the men’s race in the form of the running machine Gareth Cooke, Shaun Dimelow and promising newcomer Kieron Reed. Laura Gill and Lesley Parker finished third and fourth women respectively.

War Memorial Ladies still in hunt for title

Lauren Turner scored late on at Peterborough as they threatened a comeback. But with a referee seemingly happy to let the home side time waste at will there was plenty of frustration at the end. It was back to winning ways on Thursday evening as they played a ‘home’ game under the lights at St George’s Park, Westfield, eventually overcoming a strong Mansfield Hosiery Mills 3-0.
With two games in hand and only a three point deficit the title is for Peterborough to lose now but with six games remaining the War Memorial Ladies are still in with a shout.

Sheffield Hawks 36-26 Oulton Raiders HILLSBOROUGH Hawks, for 60 minutes of the match, totally overpowered their opponents and scored an impressive victory despite being understrength. Taking the field with 12 players Hawks immediately let a soft try in after two simple missed tackles.
Two quick tries from Will Burns and man of the match Joe Littlewood, superbly converted by Corey Hall, took Hawks in to a lead that they were never to relinquish. Harry Edgar and Owen Riches tackled hard in the middle of the
Jenny Selman scored a great volley against the run of play in the first half but the second half was much better and substitute Codi Melia bagged a goal at either end of the half to seal a solid win. On Sunday, they hosted bottom team Arnold Town and relegated the visitors with a comprehensive 5-0 win, the hard working Selman scoring a tremendous hat-trick with further goals from Kathryn Mudge and Laura Watton.

pitch and every Hawks player stepped up their game both defensively and offensively on a heavy pitch against a full team. In a welcome return Josh Bilton crossed on his second debut and the Oulton team clearly struggled with the pace, power and angles of the Hawks runners. Littlewood crossed again just before half time and, with different decisions from the referee, both Edgar and Bailey Thompson could have scored. Initially the second half saw the Hawks continue as they had ended the first. Littlewood crossed again and from a drop out under the posts, Bailey Thompson scored a trademark try from halfway.
Again Halls kicking was exemplary, slotting 6 out of 6 conversions and putting Oulton under pressure from excellent kick offs. Owen Riches was everywhere, Will Burns hit everything that moved and Spencer Poppleton was his usual relentless self. In the last 15 minutes the man advantage and the heavy pitch started to take its toll and Oulton stepped up their game. However, the heart that this team possesses saw them through to the end with an excellent victory over last year’s league winners. On this showing Hawks are starting to deliver on their potential for 2018.

Stocksbridge Rugby edged out in local derby Sheffield Medics 43-21 Stocksbridge DESPITE an improved performance, Stocksbridge Rugby suffered another defeat at the hands of local rivals Sheffield Medics in their Yorkshire Division Three clash at the weekend. This result now sees Stocksbridge rooted to the bottom of the division staring relegation in the face, barring some sort of miracle. The travelling Pigs welcomed barnstorming centre Liam O’Leary back, with Booth and James selected to start in the front row. With Rowett, pace man Ryan Smith and the evergreen Christopherson on the bench, the squad looked strong enough to cope. Initially, this was the case, as the well drilled home side had the better of the early exchanges, but the visitors held firm with some good
cover defence. Medics piled on the pressure, and a line out malfunction coupled with some weak first up tackling, allowed the home side to take the lead. Stocksbridge had their chances with Brown, Booth and the rampant Whitaker making good runs in the loose. The pack also worked hard in the tight with James and Beal dominating their opponents. A loose pass gave Medics further possession and they outflanked the visitors to score in the corner to extend their lead. A killer try just before the interval left the half time score 21-0 to Sheffield Medics. With the coaching staff ringing the changes, the visitors clawed their way back into the game, and some good
ruck play with Christopherson, operating at scrum half, orchestrating the forwards, Sam Whitaker plunged over from close range to register the first points for the visitors, veteran goal kicker Bowskill tagged on the extras. More enterprising play from fly half Wesby allowed skipper Newton to send jet heeled winger Ryan Smith on a dart for the line however, he was tackled just short. The towering Beal then stole a line out ball, and the weight of the Stocksbridge eight muscled the Medics and Newton was able to cross the try line from close range, again converted by Bowskill. More loose play and some weak defending allowed the home side to score further tries and injuries to Joe Jones and Rees Aspin didn’t help the visitors cause. Credit to the hard-
working Stocksbridge team, who never gave in, and scored a further try through the elusive running of Adam Frith, further improved by Bowskill leaving the final score 43-21 to Sheffield Medics. The visitors player of the day award went to energetic front rower Jay Booth, with three Rickys, James, Rowett and the evergreen Christopherson also showing up well. Defeat again, but positive signs for coach Keenan who said afterwards: “I asked for an improvement in attitude, enthusiasm and commitment, and I got that. There is still much to work on, but the boys seem to be enjoying their rugby again. Something that has been missing.”
With just three games left the Pigs can mathematically avoid relegation but they must win the Sponsors Day clash with Harrogate Pythons this weekend, kick off 3pm and entry is free. A big crowd is expected as the traditional sponsors day game is a very popular event.

LATE PENALTY DRAMA FOR STEELS Stocksbridge PS 1-1 Lincoln Utd
AFTER a recent run of disappointing results manager Chris Hilton was keen to get back to winning ways against a Lincoln United side that is pushing for a play off place. With a glut of games coming thick and fast for Steels, it was important to get some momentum going and strive to gain three points. Lincoln started brightly, forcing two corners almost from the kick off. A great diving save from Dave Reay, tipping the ball around the post to his left, denied a terrific volley from Lincolns number 10 Grimes which was struck cleanly from 10 yards out. The warning signs were out as Lincoln pressed forward with the Steels boys struggling for rhythm and cohesion. Both Brodie Litchfield and Joe Lumsden were thwarted by good defending as they searched for passing options in the last third. In the 21st minute they successfully combined well with Lumsden stabbing home from six yards after receiving a pass from Litchfield who went on a jinking run down the inside left channel. The excellent Matt Reay was dominant in the Steels back four and was in the thick of it leading by example as Lincoln pushed forward for the equaliser.
The game became a little scrappy towards the break with the Steels midfield three finding it hard to cope against a well drilled Lincoln four who began to control the pace of the game and pick up second balls. Scott Ruthven shot from 18 yards, and although struck well, was straight at the Lincoln goalkeeper. A counter attack from Lincoln found the Steels defenders absent with a three-on-two situation with Grimes just missing contact with the ball central to goal from a dangerous right wing whipped in cross. There was second half substitute for Steels as Ben Rhodes came on for Alex Wiles. It was an uneventful first 15 minutes of the second half with nothing to shout about as Steels tried to force the play, get forward too quickly and likewise with Lincoln as both sides played too many straight balls. On 70 minutes a strong left side penetrating run from Lumsden into Lincoln’s last third territory saw his cross miss all in front of goal and find Ben Rhodes sliding in at the far stick and hitting the base of the post from a narrow angle. Lincoln were now on top and looked as though they may find a way through but the Steels lads kept them at bay with a good shape and terrific defending led
by central defenders Matt Reay and Liam McFadyen. Steels were now defending deep and just really trying to catch the Lincoln side on the counter as they strived to hold onto the slender lead. Three points looked in the bag as the extra time board was held up by Shaun Handysides showing a minimum of five minutes yet to be played. On 90 minutes plus three, a long hopeful ball over the top of the Steels defence saw what seemed a breakdown in communication as Tom Charlesworth tried to head the ball to an onrushing Reay the Steels goalkeeper. Charlesworth did not get enough purchase on the ball and a Lincoln player nipped in on the edge of the box and Dave Reay had no option than to bring him down. Andy Toyne stepped up and drove the ball hard to Reays right, Reay saved brilliantly, parried the ball back to the taker who struck again, another great stop by Reay but only for the ball to go back to Toyne who then struck the ball into the net over a stranded Reay. Drama to the last but a deserved point for Lincoln. Some would say they deserved more but overall another keenly contested, highly competitive league fixture. Steels face Frickley at home on Thursday with a 7.45pm kick off.
