ARTIST SPREADS ‘DON’T SUFFER’ MESSAGE PIECES of art have been mysteriously appearing around Stocksbridge and artist Jarrad Leary has obviously been busy with his latest creation appearing on the Grandfather Fox roundabout at Fox Valley, although it quickly disappeared. But the work has a very serious message, one that Jarrad hopes his guerrilla-style campaign will help to get across. Daubed on the edge of the works featuring a number of celebrities is the word Samaritans, along with the phone number for the charity who are known for talking to people who are having suicidal thoughts. Jarrad has called it ‘Don’t Suffer’ with Kurt Cobain and Marilyn Monroe among the stars depicted. He says that although the campaign has started in his hometown of Stocksbridge, he is hoping to eventually roll it out all over the city. The 30-year-old said: “It was with an extremely heavy heart that I chose to start this project. I am not so naive to think that a piece of art can change a person’s thought process, or even offer a shoulder. “However, imagery can certainly reignite the notion that there is so much hope. Whether it is you who needs help, or knows someone who is suffering... If these pictures can be left where I put them, I’d be grateful. I also realise that may not happen. “I know exactly what a tragedy like this does to a person, as the nature of this stems

from my own childhood. The anxiety, the anticipation, waiting for the inevitable. It shatters their world and they spend their entire life picking up the pieces. I simply cannot sit back and watch peoples lives be affected in the way that mine was. I do this because my heart breaks for the friends and families, every single time. Forget yesterday, ignore today and think tomorrow. Don’t suffer.” As well has hoping to raise awareness of suicide, much like the football match adorning last week’s Look Local, Jarrad says that there is a whole spectrum of other problems it could cover. “For me, this covers the whole spectrum. From mental health, caused by genetics, through to addiction, to anxiety and depression. Through to the worst case scenario of suicide. “When I was a teenager and struggling with what was happening at home, I phoned Samaritans and they were amazing. So kind, so professional and I really felt that they deserved a mention in my art. I’ve been an artist now for about six years. “I’ve sold pieces in Europe and America and I can honestly say, it isn’t half as rewarding as doing something like this that may help people. Money doesn’t make you happy, it just helps. “That’s why this project is nothing to do with money. It’s to get in peoples heads. The people that need it or know the people that need it.”

Film screening shows how community opposed fracking ON Thursday May 17 ‘The Bentley Effect’, a film showcasing how organised community action defeated the powerful fracking industry in the small Australian Valley of Bentley, is being presented at The Venue, Stocksbridge, by Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge. There are two showings with a matinee show from 1pm to 3pm and an evening show from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The evening will also host a talk from Carol Gibson who will be sharing her experience of living in Marsh Lane near Eckington where chemicals giant Ineos has applied for planning permission to erect a drilling rig up to 60m tall and drill around 2,400m down into the ground to investigate the suitability of the rock for fracking. Carol’s home is within 500m of the site and she

has joined with other residents and anti-fracking demonstrators in demonstrating her opposition to the site. There have been over 3,000 objections lodged against Ineos’s application for planning from local residents. The threat of the fracking industry to this area comes not just from the Petroleum Exploration and Development Licences (PEDL) which cover most of the North of England, and under which Ineos and other fracking companies can apply for planning permission to undertake disruptive and environmentally damaging seismic surveys, but also from the potential impact of the disposal of fracking waste. One of only four facilities in the country licenced to dispose of the millions of tons of effluent which are a by-product of fracking is based right in the heart

of Ecclesfield. The extraction of shale gas through fracking is a 24/7/365 endeavour producing tanker after tanker laden with waste which would be driven from sites across the North to create a bottleneck of roads around Ecclesfield - the impact to the local infrastructure and to the air quality in the area would be measurably negative. A spokesperson from Frack Free Penistone and Stocksbridge said: “It is important for us to understand as community the potential damage that could be caused to our community, both directly and indirectly, if the frackers are allowed to ply their trade. Defibrillation and good quality bystander CPR are the two biggest factors in survival rates from cardiac arrest and it is hoped that by funding a CPAD it will one day make the difference to someone in the community. The initial £999 will be used to apply for a community grant for a subsidised cost form the Yorkshire Ambulance Service Charitable Fund and if successful would provide the CPAD and the locked cabinet. The fundraising will continue above the £999 to enable the group to provide the ongoing costs of maintenance, replacement pads, batteries and insurance. Any extra money raised could potentially fund a second defibrillator and to put back into the community by providing CPR and basic life support events. They’ll be hosting a fundraiser at Oughtibridge War Memorial cricket ground on May 20 from 12pm to 4pm with a bake sale, raffle and the bar will be open

The event was to raise much needed funds for the hall towards the restoration of the toilets and other essential repairs. Thorpe Hesley food and drink festival expands horizons with additional stalls ON Monday May 7 from 11am at Trinity Community Centre and Holy Trinity Church in Thorpe Hesley, there is a great community event. In previous years the event was a food and drink festival but this year organisers have changed it to a Spring Festival so that more attractions and stalls can be added.

Road safety charity supports bereaved families ROAD Safety charity Brake was able to deliver their services to bereaved families in South Yorkshire due to funding provided by the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Dr Alan Billings provides funding to a number of organisations as part of his commissioning budget and Brake secured £2,000 to continue their work with families whose loved ones have lost their lives on the roads of South Yorkshire.

But foodies needn’t worry! There will be a licensed bar selling real ales and a prosecco bar with hot food, cakes, teas and coffees. A wide variety of stalls, raffles, tombolas and games together with maypole dancing will be there to keep all ages entertained.

In a report issued by Brake, they detail how the £2,000 was utilised over 2017-18. The funding provided 80 bereavement packs and 51 phone calls and emails with a dedicated point of contact in the police force. Their national helpline provided direct support for 25 people involved in 15 crashes.

In the church there will be floral and craft displays depicting well known Bible stories – ‘A Journey through the Bible’. Entry to the event is £1 per adult with children free. For more information or to book a stall please contact Kay Hester on 07708421017.

NORFOLK ARMS CHARITY WALK STAFF from the Norfolk Arms in Chapeltown are taking part in a charity walk to raise funds for Weston Park Hospital. On Tuesday April 24, Tom Bell and Chloe Finch will lead a small group of friends on a walk from the cancer hospital to the Norfolk Arms, collecting money along the way. They will be setting off at 10am.

Tom told Look Local: “We decided we wanted to do something for Weston Park because they’re a local cause and cancer is something that affects everyone.” As well as the walk, the Arms will host a fundraiser on April 20 with live band, The Beat and the Bear performing. There will also be a charity raffle and cake sale. Bar staff have also donated their tip money.

Dr Billings said: “Brake works with bereaved individuals and families in the aftermath of a fatal road crash, both nationwide and in South Yorkshire. "While the police do everything they can to investigate the incidents, grieving families can still be left with questions and a big gap in their lives.

“The death of a loved one in a road collision comes out of the blue. Families are not prepared, suffer shock and grief and need on-going support. Brake offers bereavement packs and support to families looking for answers and an understanding of what to do next.” Brake is a UK-wide road safety charity, and a wellestablished provider of support to people bereaved and seriously injured in road crashes. The bereavement packs are provided to bereaved families by the police following every UK road death and have been for more than a decade. They offer a range of specialist literature online and in hard-copy, such as books for bereaved children and a guide for serious injury victims. The literature provides emotional comfort and information on the array of procedures and practical matters that traumatised families must deal with. THE Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) raised over £2,000 with a bucket collection at Sheffield Wednesday’s clash with Fulham on Saturday April 7. The ABF is a charity that supports soldiers that have been injured both physically and mentally in the line of duty and also to their families. Rob Hulley, Steven Milne and Jonny Peat are trying to raise as much as possible to help the charity and are going to attempt to complete a 66-mile three-day walk across the battlefields of the First World War in October this year. It's called the 'Front Line Walk'.

Rob said: “Thanks to SWFC for allowing us to do the bucket collection we raised a fantastic total of £2045.87 for the charity. “This included not only SWFC fans contributing but also SUFC fans contributing as we started the collection in the pubs where they congregated before their match against Barnsley.” The ABF gives a lifetime of support to soldiers and veterans from the British Army, and their immediate families, when they are in need. They make grants to individuals through their Regiments and Corps and support a wide range

of specialist charities that sustain the British Army ‘family’, both at home and around the world. They take pride in being responsive, making a difference at a critical point in people’s lives. They have been doing this since 1944, working with veterans of every conflict, and envisage continuing doing so for the long haul – supporting all future generations of our soldiers and their dependants. Local Produce, Food & Drink THE IMPORTANCE OF LOCAL PRODUCE LOOK LOCAL, LIVE LOCAL AND SHOP LOCAL Food that has been produced locally is guaranteed to be fresher than produce sold in a supermarket.

This is due to them being over handled and thrown around on their journey to the supermarket.

It could be days or even weeks before supermarket goods arrive in the store whereas local produce has often been picked in the last 24 hours of when you purchased it. It’s not only the taste which improves from freshness but the nutritional value too.

Fruit and vegetables from supermarkets are therefore going to be fully ripened by the time you purchase them, or they may even be bruised. Local produce on the other hand has been handled a lot less and hasn’t had to stand up to rigorous transportation.

Buying local goods also makes us keep up to date with the seasons meaning that we are eating foods when they taste the best and are least expensive.

Similarly, a local brewer is more likely to produce a wider range of beers compared to the range sold in supermarkets. Local brewers also brew specialty beers throughout the year which means there is a chance to try something new. An added advantage of local brewers is that their beer is cheap, priced at roughly £2 a pint.

Local Produce, Food & Drink Bradfield Brewery to offer warm welcome at their Deepcar pub POPULAR Sheffield based Bradfield Brewery have taken ownership of the King and Miller Public House situated in Deepcar, Sheffield.

Formerly owned by Admiral Taverns, an opportunity knocked at the door for Bradfield Brewery when they saw the establishment had been placed on the market for sale. With contracts now exchanged, the brewery are keen to get the doors open and give a warm welcome to customers old and new. Shortly to become a Bradfield Brewery Tap, the King and Miller will feature at least six cask ales from the Farmers Ales range produced by the brewery, as well as a great selection of fine wines, spirits and soft drinks. With open fires, a pool table and a spacious, enclosed beer garden – the pub

will endeavour to offer a warm and friendly atmosphere where everyone will be welcome. Operating a public house venue is not something new for Bradfield Brewery who have enjoyed a decade of success at their Brewery Tap, The Nags Head at Loxley. Bradfield Brewery is based on a busy working farm in the picturesque village of Bradfield in Sheffield. Since brewing their first cask ale in 2005, the brewery has enjoyed continued success with their Farmers Ale range, delivering their cask ales to outlets nationwide. John Gill, Director at Bradfield Brewery, on the acquisition said: “We are excited at the opportunity to serve another local community with a traditional style pub-

lic house which will offer great products in a friendly atmosphere. “A traditional pub is something we believe should remain a part of our society and we are pleased to be bringing this offering to the local community of Deepcar and Stocksbridge.” The King and Miller will be re-opening soon with a date yet to be confirmed. FOUR GOALS IN TWO DAYS FOR CODURI IT was a great weekend for Penistone Church’s Jordan Coduri – he scored the winning goal for Church against Pontefract Collieries on Saturday and then hit a hat-trick for Yorkshire against Barawa – their first away game. OUGHTIBRIDGE War memorial got back to wining ways in the Blades Super Draw with a hard fought 5-1 win over Southey, but despite top scorer Callum Chambers capitalising on a keeper error after only five minutes, the first half was a very even contest and it was no surprise when the away side equalised on the stroke of half time. In the second half, Oughtibridge came flying out of the blocks and Callum Chambers again wasted no time adding two more to complete his hat-trick before Chas Tunnards hard work paid off when he scored. Then,

Chambers added his fourth five minutes from time to complete the scoring. Sunday’s home game however was in stark contrast as a depleted Oughtibridge put on a dreadful display against lowly Cotts. They were 2-0 down at half time and when the away side made it three just after the restart, the game was effectively over. A Callum Chmabers penalty and a lovely finish from Matt Harrison brought the home side back in to the game but the away side managed to hold on to win 3-2. HIGH Green Villa FC ground out a 1-1 draw against Dodworth MWFC. This was an interesting fixture with runaway leaders Dodworth needing just one point to secure the league title and Villa keen for a win to help their own promotion chances.

Villa had an early chance with leading scorer Jacobs through on goal with Wiles the Dodworth keeper making a point blank save. This was a good hard fought contest with both teams creating half chances. Villa took the lead in the 35th minute when Wilson scored direct from a 20-yard free kick, curled into the top corner of the net. Villa pressed for a second and it was only late in the game when Dodworth started to look dangerous and equalised after 75 minutes, 1-1 being a fair result. Villa’s next game is in the Association Cup Final on April 25 against Penistone Church to be played at Parkgate FC, kick off 7.30pm.

SWIMMING TO SUCCESS STOCKSBRIDGE Pentaqua swimmers again enjoyed success in the recent Yorkshire County events held over three weekends in February.

Twenty-nine swimmers gained qualifying times to perform in a total of 112 races in the annual county championships, showing an increasing trend in the number of eligible swimmers produced by the club. All swimmers showed determination and dedication in their efforts in these galas. The committed youngsters performed well with 28 top 10 prizes being awarded to nine swimmers. Top three individual awards were achieved by Ben Croft and Makyle Iqbal - the boys showing dominance in the 13-year-old category. The boys aged 11 and 12 and over 16 boys and girls competed well and produced final places in the team events. Stocksbridge Pentaqua head coach, David Wright, is extremely pleased with the swimmers achievements and values the efforts these children put into the sport. He said: “Lots of the swimmers achieved the quicker North Eastern Regional qualifying times and will be representing the club in May. “This is achievement is impressive given the size and limited resources of the club; the reputation of Stocksbridge Pentaqua continues to grow.” Swimmers are hoping to repeat their successes at the club’s Open Meet which will be held on Aprils 21 at Ponds Forge. David added: “Good Luck to all swimmers competing.
