Burglars steal cherished memories Heartless thieves have ransacked a home in Ecclesfield, stealing cherished memories from their grieving victim whose partner died days earlier, aged just 40.
Chris Hunter’s girlfriend of 10 years, Zoe Price, died on April 19 this year of cancer, and his agony was deepened when last week he woke to find burglars had struck at his home while he slept. Among the items reported stolen were Zoe’s white iPhone X, containing priceless photos and messages, and her blue Audi with the personalised number plate ‘CH04 ZOE’. The 41-year-old has shared CCTV footage, which he says shows the intruders entering his home on Ecclesfield Mews, in a bid to bring them to justice and retrieve
the items which mean so much to him. “I was still using Zoe’s phone to contact people and it had photos and messages which she wrote during her treatment which are irreplaceable,” he said. “I could buy a new phone or a car but I can’t get those memories back.” Zoe, an office administrator who worked all her life for a furnishings company in Sheffield, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and had been in remission after undergoing successful treatment. But the cancer returned, spreading rapidly, and she died just two days after returning to hospital when her condition suddenly deteriorated. Mr Hunter said CCTV footage showed the burglars breaking in through the back door
at around 2am on Saturday morning.
They spent about 25 minutes scouring the house, where condolence cards were clearly visible, before leaving in Zoe’s car. “When I went downstairs and saw my coats were on the floor my first thought was is this a sign from Zoe, but then I walked into the kitchen and saw all the cupboards and drawers open,” said Chris. “Zoe was a very lovely, loving and loyal person who always put others before herself and I miss her so much. “Being burgled has just taken all the fight out of me. The worst thing is they must have seen the cards and carried on. These people are so heartless. “I just want them found and for them to realise what they’ve done.” * Anyone with information is asked Chris Hunter’s girlfriend of 10 years, Zoe Price, died on April 19 this year of cancer. to call police on 101.

FOX HILL CANNABIS HAUL RECOVERED
Local News
FIRE CREW SHEEP RESCUE
FIRE crews from Rivelin and Tankersley green watch rescued a distressed sheep that had fallen into water at Agden reservoir on April 16. The sheep seemed to have been in there a while and was exhausted. Firefighters quickly rescued the sheep with specialist equipment and helped a local farmer from the water too.
FOLLOWING some proactive work earlier this week by South Yorkshire Police’s PCSO Karl Duckles and PC Kev Bly team from the Parson Cross & Southey Green, four males have been arrested from an address on Halifax Road for possession with intent to supply. Police colleagues from The Sheffield Tasking Team duly obliged in making the arrests following the development of the information with the males
in question currently being processed. This is the first of many results you will be seeing from the area following Fox Hill being adopted into SYP’s problem solving portfolio. A spokesperson for the police said: “If you have or are intending on growing or storing drugs you are probably on our list. Have a think about giving it up before we come to your door will you!
“As always, if anyone has any information regarding drug activity within Fox Hill, Parson Cross or Southey Green, please ring 101 or call crime stoppers on 0800 555 111. Alternatively, if you see us out and about, feel free to come and talk to us.” If you have a problem with the drug and wish to seek help then also remember you can ‘TALKTOFRANK’ confidentially on 0300 123 6600.
More families given primary school places of choice MORE children have been given their choice of primary school in Sheffield, admissions results out on Monday April 16 have shown. In total 6,014 children received a preferred place, an increase on last year’s results. 98.75 per cent of pupils starting primary school in September have been given a place in one of their preferred schools, an increase from 98.13 per cent last year. More children have also been given their first choice of schools. 93.71 per cent of pupils starting primary school in September have been given their first preference, an increase from 92.05 per cent last year. Jayne Ludlam, Executive Director of People services at Sheffield City Council said: “Despite the ongoing pressure on primary places I’m pleased that Sheffield continues to perform well for its families and this is reflective of all the hard work over recent years to add school places where they are most needed. “However my heart goes out to those children and families who have not got a school of their
choosing, I understand and know how upsetting that can be. Our admissions team are working with these families to ensure they have a school place for September. We will continue to do all we can to make sure there are great local school places for all. “I would urge anyone who is not happy with their school place to get in touch with our admissions team for advice.” Children who were not allocated any of their three preferences have either been referred to their catchment school or been allocated the nearest primary school with places available. Information and advice is available for anyone not satisfied with the school they have been allocated. Parents also have the right to appeal. Appeals take place in June and July. More information is available at http://www. sheffield.gov.uk/home/schools-childcare/ catchment-areas-over-subscribed-schools You can also email the team at ed-admissions@ sheffield.gov.uk

ORIGINAL artwork by Barnsley Sixth Form College tutor Richard Kitson is to be displayed in the town’s Cooper Gallery over the next two months. Richard’s free exhibition ‘A Decade of Painting of Life, 2008-2018’ was launched earlier this month and includes over 25 portraits and drawings which were created from life rather than photographic reference. The exhibition follows on from Richard’s appearance on Sky Arts’ Portrait Artist of the Year programme and includes life drawing and portrait workshops which are open to the public. Richard has taught A Level Art and Design at the Sixth Form College for four years having previously taught at Barnsley College.
Each of the paintings displayed required the subject to pose for at least two hours a week over a period of months and in some cases years, enabling Richard to capture their likeness after observing them in both motion and stillness. Richard, 36, of Birdwell, said: “My relationship with the Cooper Gallery goes back to when I volunteered there as a student so to have my first solo exhibition there is quite fitting. It’s also on the doorstep of the Sixth Form College and Barnsley College so students can see the work and hopefully be inspired to apply for their own exhibitions in the future.” For more information on studying Art and Design at Barnsley Sixth Form College, visit www.barnsleysixthformcollege.co.uk, call 01226 216 123 or email info@barnsley.ac.uk

Pupils’ BIG challenge gives boost to local charities
A TEAM of pupils from Stocksbridge High School have raised £280 for charity after coming up with a bright business venture as part of Sheffield’s city wide BIG Challenge. The enterprise initiative is aimed at encouraging pupils in years seven to 11 to come up with their own business idea, establish it as a venture and successfully run it. Year seven pupils Noah Kitchen, Harrison Dimelow and James Wheeler came up with their business ‘Literary Lanterns’ - the initiative was based around up-
cycling glass jars into attractive lanterns featuring extracts from classic books into the design. The Literary Lanterns team were one of the youngest to enter across the city and out of 200 entrants made it to the final 22 and won the ‘Flying Start’ award for managing to secure a market stall at Fox Valley for the centre’s busy Christmas market. The team agreed to donate a quarter of their profits from the market to Fox Valley’s chosen charity - Stocksbridge Leisure Centre - and have now
donated £70 to the centre manager Sandra Barley. The boys decided they would donate all their profits from the Fox Valley Market to charity and other groups to benefit from the enterprise include three which are close to the boys’ hearts; Prader Willi Syndrome Association as Noah’s cousin has the syndrome, McMillan Cancer Relief in memory of James’ grandparent and Rain Rescue, a local animal rescue charity where Harrison rescued his family dog. The team made a total of £600 throughout the
whole project by creating the attractive lanterns in lots of different shapes and sizes. Sandra Barley, centre manager at Fox Valley, said: “We’ve all been really impressed with how the team put forward their business idea and approached us to be considered for the market in the run up to Christmas. “It’s great that their endeavours have helped our chosen charity as well as so many other great causes. The boys should be really proud of what they have achieved.”

A REAL COMMUNITY PUB
The ‘bottom Red Lion’ in Grenoside is ready to welcome the community back through its doors, after new owners refurbish the décor and overhaul the menu. Paul Foster, Sophie Hodges and their team would like to offer a very warm welcome to customers old and new.
Their vision is to create a real community pub, offering a range of real ales, gins and cocktails. Home cooked food will be on the new menu – using fresh produce. From Light bites to a hearty homecooked meal on the menu – so why not get yourself down to your new local. Classically trained local chef Jake Sampson is enjoying the challenge of the new menu “ I’m really looking forward to producing amazing dishes using fresh local produce. We have a fantastic atmosphere here and it’s a pleasure to work here on a daily
basis. I’m looking forward to your feedback on the menu.
Special dietary requirements will be available along with a full kid’s menu and a specials board. General manager Sophie Hodges enthused “This is a really exciting time to be part of the team and we are looking forward to bringing the pub back to its former glory. We look forward to many happy times in the years to come.”
The coffee machine is even local, with Cafeology of Sheffield due to install one of their much talked about coffee machines. Outdoor catering is also available.
The refurbishment gives the popular pub a real traditional look with a cosy feel and a modern twist, ideal for any occasion.
Paul Foster – owner, has an extensive background in the catering and events industry. Paul gained manager expertisee at the likes of Manchester United, snoozebox, Glastonbury festival and F1 Grand Prix. He also saw the successful transition of an old university hall of residence into a boutique hotel, with staggering success.
There is ample parking and outside seating for upto 50 people. A new decking area is planned for the outside area in the next year to give extra comfort.
Paul ventured into the pub business taking over at the ‘3 Merry lads’ alongside running his own catering business Foster & Son.
Regular live music and events are planned and The Red Lion ‘Sunday Roast’ is not to be missed.
Paul, Sophie, Jake and the team look forward to welcoming you very soon.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Dear Look Local,
Got something to say? Email us at news@looklocal.org.uk Publication subject to space and content.
Publishing does not mean we agree with the content.
Do you find your written poetry does not get read On Saturday evening in Bolsterstone Church a except by you? Do you fancy getting round a table magnificent concert ‘for the fallen’ was performed and reading it to a group who are interested once to such a high standard I could have been in the a month? Albert Hall! Males or females welcome. This group is just for Waldershelf singers & The chambers ensemble relaxing, enjoying other poet’s work. If you are brought the audience to their feet! The men who interested, call Ann Sellers on 0114 2882838. had fallen in the somme & flanders field were honoured by us all. It was agreed by all in the full Here’s a poem from Margaret Eggenton, who church the Drumhead service & Last Post were so attends the group. poignant, tears were shed! We are so proud of our wonderful choir & admire the hard work done, the We moved to Stocksbridge 57 year ago, proceeds fittingly went to The Royal Legion! What a lot of changes there has been, Yours Sincerely Pam Bettney New shops come and go, New people we don’t know, Is it better now or worse because I disliked it at first.
A brothers Lament (for Ann)
Your Letters Clare Wilson Dear Editor, I read with interest the letter from Clare Wilson in issue 2006 and of course she is right, at a time when crime is at an all time high the politicians are not doing anything about it and do not have any answers, the truth is that we have too many MPs and police commissioners in this country, if we cannot afford them then They should be cut, not beat bobbies. P.S. Well done Clare. Bob Mac
Won’t get fooled again I am writing in response to the letter “Wont get fooled again” issue 1006. I haven’t written in before, but felt compelled to after reading Alex’s letter. In 2010 I voted Labour, as I often have done over the years. When I heard the results of the election and the following announcement that the conservatives would be forming a government with the Lib Dem’s, I felt unsure what the future held, not ever living with a coalition government. Looking back, the Lib Dem’s and Nick Clegg particularly have had a very ruff ride off the back of the coalition, but I am very grateful for what they did. They put the country before politics and gave calm at a time of total mess. The economy was in free fall, the banks had been bailed out at a massive cost to the tax payer and the pound was about to collapse! The saying “two heads are better than one” is the best way to describe what happened. Nick Clegg kept George Osbourne on a lead, we got the increase in the personal tax allowance that many families needed and a government that was stable and balanced in its approach to dealing with the economy. In the UK, we are not accustomed to coalition governments, in Germany, they have had a coalition almost every year since the world war II. What a coalition brings are balanced views and compromise, not radical policies that cause more damage than good. If you study what went on during the time of the coalition, you will see that Nick Clegg and the Lib Dem’s did far more good for the country than people may think and at the sacrifice of their party and votes. Governments are here to serve the people, not the interests of their party or its financial backers. I thank Nick Clegg for this, I really do. Paul Swift, Burncross
Polling Day! Go vote. 7am to 10pm. It does matter, it is important, freedom to vote was not free to get.
When I look back on childhood days It fills me with remorse The funds were there for the leaf & grape With some left to chance a horse. The parental skills were left wanting His kids at it ready and rough Our bond flew forever stronger We survived when the going got tough. We survived through the love of each other While our parents were incredibly dumb I was proud to call you ‘big sister’ I wished I had called you Mum. We were started at the back of the race Malnourished without any shoes We made our way through the field of life Forgetting about singing the blues. When mother left and big brother too We looked up to our big sister ‘Ann’ You brought up my baby sister While protecting the rest of the clan. You left to start a new life With a family all of your own What a fantastic mother you were With skills you were never shown. You were a rock in the toughest of times Nothing more a mother could have done The strength you shared was amazing Through the death of your eldest son. Your children gave you grandkids So your mothering could carry on No one could do it better Your skills were never gone. Your door was always open Your kitchen the heart of life Where you showed your skill as a mother A friend, a sister, a wife. Your pain is now gone and you are set free To continue mothering in heaven I was proud to be one of eight But upset to be one of seven. But no matter what lays ahead Through journeys both curved and straight And if I suffer more sibling deaths I will always be one of eight. Our parents were never like you Wasting pennies and shillings and quids And my strength to write these verses Stems from the days when we were kids.
Councillor David Ogle Candidate West Ecclesfield Ward RIP
My mum complained you’re far away Too far for me to travel, Not only are their two big hills, It’s too much of a hassle. I couldn’t drive I had two small boys, To lug to Sheffield and back, Visiting my mum each week, Got on my wack. I took some driving lessons, So pleased I passed first time, Then driving to mum’s in Sheffield, Was really quite fine. It took some time to settle here, But I’m really glad we have, The countryside is beautiful, But the winters are quite bad.

I have 3 grandchildren and they’re lovely (as most are)!
We have all that it needed In our Stocksbridge valley town, A new retail park full of shops, Even a car drives you up and down. Three supermarkets a factory shop, Take -aways by the score, Pubs, a library ,coffee shops, Who could ask for more. I could not go back to Sheffield, Though the hospitals are wonderful, Restaurants and the night life, Might make Stocksbridge seem quite dull. We have the best of both worlds, The culture and the space, Of coming home to Stocksbridge, It is a smashing place. Margaret Eggenton
Stocksbridge Community Day Many many thanks to everyone who took part: the many groups who attended, all those who spent the day serving food and drink and washing up, all those who contributed in any other way (Lyn and her line dancing group and technology; Fairtrade who donated tea and coffee ;Bridge Community shop for an enabling donation; Richard Hunt; Keith our Mayor who arrived one hour early! and all who came to find out more and support the community. A special thanks to groups who attended for the first time and to those aimed at young people. It was really good to find out so much about each group- everyone learnt a lot. Attendance could have been higher, but due to bad weather we had had to change dates and other important events were on in the Valley on Sunday.
My background is in Finance, having started work for Sheffield City Council in 1975 until retiring in March 2011, working in City Treasury and subsequently Corporate Finance. My most recent roles have involved me in External Funding, including working as an External Funding Manager, responsible for EU capital grants and as the SCC Lottery Co-ordinator where my responsibilities included supporting Community and Voluntary Groups to access grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Arts Council England and Sport England. The opportunity to work in my local area and support local Councillors’ in order to “make a difference” has brought me out of retirement, and I am looking forward to continuing the good work that Ecclesfield Parish Council is undertaking. Since starting work at EPC, there are a number of developments / projects that are being taken forward that have impressed me. However, being involved in the siting of the defibrillators I think is the most valuable and rewarding. It involves a partnership between the Parish Council and the Wortley Rotary Club and will ensure each of the wards within the Parish has at least one accessible defibrillator in a public location. So far, and the project has only just begun, there have been benefits and the defibrillators have actually been used on two occasions. Whilst it would be preferable that they were just maintained rather than required, they are a great asset to the local community and Ecclesfield Parish Councillors, in my opinion, should be congratulated for proposing their introduction to our area.
The overwhelming feeling from many was that we As Clerk, I look forward to being involved in many are so lucky to live in a place where there are so such initiatives that “make a difference” within the many things happening, so many things to choose EPC area. from and support. Regards, Russell Kelly Stocksbridge Community Forum Clerk and Responsible Finance Officer

Mystery Gin Festival lights up Penistone
Spring Garden & Craft Fayre at Wortley Hall Sunday 13th May 11am until 4pm
Penistone hosted its first Mystery Gin Festival last weekend and it is being hailed as a major success by the organisers with the event selling out on both Friday and Saturday nights. Ticket holders were spoilt for choice over the two day event, with over 50 of the best gins from around the world available – each served with complimentary garnishes and Fever Tree premium tonics and mixers.
to identify their ‘Mystery Gin’ on their arrival and could buy colour-changing drinks at the Mystery Bar.” Industry experts attended from several local gin distilleries and presented Gin Master Classes. Gin tasting sessions were offered at the stalls of Sir Robin of Locksley Gin, Jacqson Gin and Divine Gin.
Guests had the chance to explore the mysterious Steampunk decor and there was a distinctly Victorian-industrial vibe: tables were created from oil drums and the bar was crafted from pallets.
Attendees could also design their own gins to make at home and could buy steampunk cufflinks and amazing gin bottle lights – as well as taking part in the free photo-booth, expertly managed and photographed by Milly Futter.
The event initially sold out within weeks and organisers needed to book additional space to accommodate the guests.
People interested in attending future events are encouraged to follow Mystery Gin Festival on Facebook for tickets.
Big day, big bills - couples seem to be cutting back on wedding extravagance.
“We wanted to provide a gin festival with a twist,” explains Jon Gilbert, one of the organisers of the Mystery Gin Festival. “Guests were encouraged try

LAST OF THE BIG WEDDING SPENDERS The romance of getting married is quite often marred by the worrying costs involved. The consensus is that the average outlay is spiralling ever upwards, but new research now suggests that couples may be becoming more restrained in their attitude to spending on their big day.
The average cost of a wedding is now about £16,000. A survey carried out by Halifax Personal Loans reveals that only nine per cent of people think this is a reasonable amount to pay. Over half of those questioned thought this was too much to fork out on their nuptials, believing that £10,000 or less was a more appropriate
figure. One quarter of people in the survey would hope to cut costs even further by spending between £1,000 and £5,000. Singletons are the most likely to be dreaming of an extravagant wedding, with a quarter of this group prepared to consider spending more than £15,000 when they get hitched. Interestingly, people who are already married or who had been married before were far less likely to see the need to splash out over the odds. Only 13 per cent and 15 per cent respectively believed it was reasonable to spend £15,000 or more.
Young love knows no financial bounds it seems, with one in
five of the 18-25 age group considering £15,000 and over a reasonable amount to pay. This compares with one in 10 of the 25-34 age group and eight per cent of the 35-44 age group. Northerners are most inclined to splash out on weddings. Four per cent said spending over £50,000 on their big day would be acceptable. Couples in the southwest are the least likely to pay over the odds, with 17 per cent considering less than £1,000 a reasonable amount. When it comes to the honeymoon, more people appear to be comfortable with the typical costs involved. The average cost of a honeymoon trip is
estimated at £2,475. Nearly half of those questioned agreed that between £2,000 and £4,999 was a reasonable sum to pay. One in five considered over £5,000 a more suitable figure. Only three per cent thought it would be more reasonable to spend under £1,000. Ian Corfield, head of Halifax Unsecured Personal Loans, says, “Weddings seem to have come back in fashion in recent years and we have seen average costs increase dramatically. “However, our survey suggests that there may be a change in opinion as to how much couples should spend. It may be that the costs typically involved have reached a level that is
n o longer considered r e a s o n a b l e . “In contrast, people seem generally more comfortable with
average honeymoon costs and do not see this level of expense as unreasonable or overinflated.”

Stocksbridge RUFC 35-27 Aireborough Consigned to their fate of relegation, Stocksbridge Rugby staged a fantastic second half recovery to record their second victory in three games. The Pigs stunned their mid-table visitors Aireborough with a four try blitz, then holding on manfully for a 35pts to 27pts bonus point win. The result was tarnished slightly by a bad leg break to No 8 Ben Brown towards the end of the first half. Hooker Ricky James passed a last minute fitness test, and Jack Spencer replaced Joe Jones on the wing, a strong bench of Bowman, Beal, Rowett, Aspin and Richardson would prove to be very influential during the course of the game. First blood to the visitors who scored a simple try through some pretty ineffectual tackling from the Stocksbridge pack, who struggled to cope with the big Aireborough 8 early in the game. When the home side did have possession of the ball the pick and drive tactics worked to good effect with skipper Newton, prop Woodcock and Sam Whitaker showing up well. Bowskill nailed a penalty to get Stocksbridge Rugby on the board, but almost immediately a kick off return error gave the visitors another try scoring opportunity, which they gratefully accepted, although their kicker was having an off day. Coach Keenan emptied the bench with 3 substitutions looking for an impact, and a great mid field break from Tom Spencer created an opportunity for supporting half
back Frith however, he was tackled before receiving the ball and Stocksbridge had to be content with another 3pts from Bowskill’s reliable right boot to keep the score board ticking over. The luckless Whitaker succumbed to a calf strain as the visitors recorded their 4th and bonus point try of the first half, fortunately goal kicking failures kept the door open for the home side. A typically bull charging rampage from Brown ended in disaster as he suffered a break and dislocation of his ankle during a tackle which brought about a premature end to the first half with the score Stocksbridge Rugby 6pts - Aireborough 20pts. Keenan gave the team the hair dryer treatment at half time, leaving them in no doubt about his view on their first half performance, and demanded a reaction. He only had to wait for 2 minutes as centre Westby jinked and weaved a path through the Aireborough ranks to score in the corner, and Bowskill added the extras. Game on ! The home pack tore into the sizeable visiting eight, gaining parity in the scrums and the loose, a break by Booth lead to a penalty as Aireborough chose fair means or foul to halt the blue juggernaut, and Bowskill responded positively to cut the lead to just 4pts. A rejuvenated Adam Frith was on hand to finish a sweeping Stocksbridge move and cap a fine personal performance with a try of his own, again and importantly goaled by Bowskill.
dashing Ryan Smith gave Stocksbridge good field position from which the veteran playmaker Ricky Christopherson used his deft handling skills to release the bustling O’Leary in the centre, who crashed over for a try to give Stocksbridge Rugby the lead, they were never going to give up. Enter replacement Jamie Richardson, who with his first touch of the ball, bundled his way over for a further Stocksbridge try, after another training ground move including Bowskill, Frith and Westby to send the sizable home crowd into raptures, thinking about what could have been if this form had been shown on a more consistent basis throughout the whole season. Bowskill was again successful with his conversion taking his personal tally to 15pts in a strong performance from full back. Aireborough are an experienced unit, and it wasn’t all one way traffic. Perhaps needing time to breathe the Pigs relaxed and the visitors again recorded a close range score to keep themselves in the hunt. Stocksbridge Rugby weren’t to be denied and held out during a frantic last few minutes for a well earned, hard fought but fully deserved victory by 35pts to 27pts. Stocksbridge will now take stock of their season during the review process and plan their assault on the Division four title next time out. Keep an eye out for details of the popular end of season club awards dinner, with a high profile guest speaker set to be announced shortly.

Oughtibridge ladies lose out in title clash Oughtibridge WM Ladies 0-2 Nettleham Ladies
It was a case of a game too far for the War Memorial Ladies as they went down 2-0 to title rivals Nettleham. Oughtibridge had expended a lot of energy in coming away with a 4-1 win at Rise Park on Thursday evening to go level with the visitors but it clearly had a big impact on this game which was settled with goals mid way through each half. Oughtibridge pressed throughout to no avail and found a keeper in fine form in what became a frustrating afternoon. The Ladies round off their season with home games against Ollerton Toiwn (Wed 2 May) and Rise Park (Sunday 6 May) with 3rd place guaranteed and only a mathematical chance of the title now.

The Fellsman day & night race
Whinmoor Warriors 20-44 Sheffield Hawks
The Fellsman race meant a day and night out on the hills for Sarah Jones-Morris, Steve Sanders and Anne Beresford. Despite forecasts of cloud and possibility of rain, it turned out to be a glorious day. Setting off from Ingleton at 8.30am, the trio completed the 61 miles to Threshfield in a time of 23 hours. Although they enjoyed spectacular views for much of the run, they did have to navigate across Yockenthwaite Moor in the dark. At the Bradford 10k road race, new recruit Kieron Reed recorded an excellent 36:15. Julie Darigala completed the Chester Half Marathon, her first outing over this distance, in a time of 1:46.04. The Yorkshire Three Peaks race took place at the weekend. Covering 24 miles and 5200 feet of ascent, the route takes in the peaks of Peny-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Two Penistone runners completed the challenge, Phil Hinchcliffe in 3:51.09 and John Tomlinson in 4:41.36. Following the second leg of the South Yorkshire Road League at Worsbrough, Julie Moxon (F45), Shaun Dimelow (V45) and Matt Robinson (V50) remain in strong contention to claim first prizes in their categories. Pic - Anne Beresford, Sarah Jones-Morris and Steve Sanders.
Penistone 10k race The Penistone 10K road race has been nationally recognised as one of the best in the country. The race, which was first run in 1984, has seen a few changes of course over the years, and has stepped up to the challenge of continually improving its organisation. This work has been recognised by the British Association of Road Running, which awarded the race the prestigious Bill Reynolds Memorial Trophy. Reynolds was a past president of BARR and the trophy recognises races which share his passion for improving the standards of race organisation. Penistone Footpath Runners, which organises the annual event, which takes place in late June, had to undergo a rigorous examination during the 2017 race in order to qualify for the award, which is open to all BARR members nationwide.
Sheffield Hawks out-thought and out-fought a strong Whinmoor Warriors side in a comprehensive away victory in Leeds. The first 20 minutes were one-way traffic and the Hawks scored three good tries and appeared totally in control. Joe Littlewood controlled the distribution well from dummy half and, with two willing attackers in Josh Bilton and Corey Hall, chances were plentiful. Hall opened the scoring after 5 minutes with a well taken, strong drive through tackles after solid work from the whole team. For the next ten minutes it was the turn of speed merchant Bailey Thompson to weave his way through the mud to score out wide after a kick-off return that took him the length of the pitch. What impressed most was the collective approach of the team. Owen Riches, Thompson and Tom Kerr all went close. Riches ran great lines all match and Kerr’s running from deep has improved immensely this season. Saul Hinchliffe and Tom Clarke were impressive in contact offensively and defensively. Bilton and Hall made the most of the space they were afforded by Littlewood who was quick of thought and decisive throughout the match. However, Whinmoor are nothing if not resilient and they came right back at the Hawks with three tries of their own and at
20-16 ahead Hawks appeared to have eased off. The last play of the half saw Hall cross again and it was clear that normal service would be resumed. The second half saw Hawks outscore the Warriors 4 tries to 1. Reuben Kateregga scored perhaps the most memorable after a comedy of errors presented him with the ball in the in-goal area. Flop, pat the ball and a roll for good measure. In the middle of the pitch Hawks extended their dominance. If they didn’t score, they completed their sets and applied pressure across the line. Joe Littlewood sent the entire Whinmoor line the wring way and darted over to add another 4. Joseph ‘JT’ Tipping stepped his way through to add another 4. Whinmoor simply could not cope with the systematic demolition of their lines by the Hawks players. Robert Harden, Bilton, Ed Coates, Kateregga, Harry Edgar, Tom Kerr from fullback all made breaks throughout the second half. Whinmoor did cross once in the second half and kept going throughout this game which was a great illustration for the Yorkshire Junior Rugby Leagues. It was played in a great spirit, in the proper traditions of the game. Two wins in the last two games against good sides show that the Hawks are starting to deliver great results.
Oughtibridge go top Norton Sportsman 1 (Bowland) Oughtibridge WMFC 2 (Brown, Chambers)
Club Cross-country secretary Simon Pike was presented with the tro- The Division One title race was blown wide open by Oughtibridge phy when down in London last weekend to compete in the marathon. WM beating Norton Sportsman 2-1 to take top spot off them. With just two games remaining just one point now separates the top three. The next running of the Penistone 10k will be on Sunday 24th June. Both sides were promoted in midweek and it was the away side Full details can be found on the club’s website. http://pfrac.co.uk/club- definitely started the brightest but Sportsman after took the lead races/penistone-10k/ after 10 mins and looked to have one hand on the title when Brad Bowland scored against the run of play when the striker knocked in a rebound for his 33rd goal of the season. Oughtibridge who knew that nothing less than a win would do if they were to have any chance of the title responded well, first with Callum Chambers headed over and then Ross Brown missed a great chance. Brown made amends with the equaliser, finishing off a great team move. Andy Gibbons headed against a post for Sportsman and man of the match Matt Harrison missed a good chance for the visitors when he went through one on one firing straight at the keeper. However the title race was blown wide open when Callum Chambers was brought down in the box. He picked himself up to score his 30th goal of the season, 20 minutes from time and give the Pic - Simon Pike receiving the Bill Reynolds Memorial Trophy from points to the War Memorial. The game started with Leek Town on the front foot but a packed Steels midfield easily 161 Rutland Road, snuffed out any opportunities in terms of Sheffield S3 9PP goal attempts by the home side. The first half www.amorablinds.co.uk | email: info@amorablinds.co.uk was a scrappy affair with no team able to find enough space in the opponents final third to fashion any real goal threat. pace to fire a decent right footed drive across Reay and into his right hand post from 12 yards out. Steels rallied and became positive, played good football at times and forced a sequence of corners as Leek looked to be happy with a one goal lead.. Again Steels shot themselves in the foot on 62 minutes as Poulton lost possession in the left back spot and was punished by Sam Grimshaw, the Leek substitute, who scored with virtually his first touch coming inside and shooting left footed past Reays outstretched right hand from 18 yards. Steels were never at the races up top and really did not trouble the home goalkeeper Danny Roberts with few shots on goal. Matt Reay was sent on as a makeshift centre forward and caused a few problems but too little too late as Steels succumbed to a typical end of season performance. Player injuries and substitutions caused delays and disruptions to shape for both teams as players were subjected to stop start football which didn’t allow the game to flow really. Another end of season match to forget as Steels players look towards their flip flops and sun beds, deservedly so, as they recharge their batteries ready for next year. If only the second half of the season could have replicated the first, but that’s football and its all in the game as they say. So, next season, Long journeys to far off southern venues are replaced with long journeys to northern venues as the leagues divisions have been creatively restructured. Final Score: Leek Town 2 – 0 SPS
