Parish council recognise outstanding contribution in the community

Bradfield parish council recently handed out citizens awards to those who have made a significant contribution to the parish and surrounding communities.

Jo Brook has been awarded the first Extraordinary Services Award on behalf of the Parishioners. Jo has been the joint chair of the Oughtibridge Gala committee for over 10 years and has recently become a governor at Bradfield School. She has been instrumental in the setting up of Oughtibridge Community Café, along

with the many other ways that Jo gives her time. Jo was nominated for this award because she is the backbone of the community, never seeking any form of recognition for her hard work.

Other winners included Young citizens award to Matthew Moran and Joshua Allen for their voluntary services. Joshua and Matthew are both young leaders at the 150th Wadsley church scout group and have organised survival weekends, showing initiative and exhibit a can-do-attitude.

The Special Recognition Award went to Dot Russell for her voluntary services at Stannington library. The Lifetime Community Service Award went to Gordon Danks. Gordon has worked as a Peak District National Park ranger for just over 30 years and over that time has become the face of the National Park and beyond. The Community Group Award was presented to female-only running group, Strideout, which was set up by Gay Fletcher and Andrea Bardwin in 2011.

Organised by the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the aircraft will make two passes of the valley over the Derwent Dam starting at 12.05pm. Organisers strongly recommend leaving plenty of time for your journey and to allow yourself to reach your desired viewing location. Expect traffic queues and travel delays in the area.

Farmer fined for failing to keep records for his animals A farmer who failed to keep records relating to his animals has been fined by the courts. Sheffield City Council prosecuted the farmer, Mr J E Dyson of Greaves Lane, Stannington who was fined £530 for repeated offences of failing to keep records. Mr Dyson was fined £250 by Sheffield Magistrates’ Court and ordered to pay a contribution to the council’s costs of £250, along with a £30 victim surcharge for five offences. The court heard that the farmer, Mr J E Dyson of Greaves Lane, Stannington, had been prosecuted for four of the same offences in 2014 and 2015. Farmers are required to keep records of animal movements on and off their premises, for disease control purposes

such as foot and mouth. They also need to keep a record of any medication given to the animals so that no drugs enter the food chain. Records of any animals dying on the farm also have to be kept to ensure carcasses are disposed of correctly.

Ian Ashmore, Head of Environmental Regulation AT Sheffield City Council, said: “The council takes its duties regarding animal health extremely seriously. The National Audit Office report on the handling of the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak showed that the In July 2017 Sheffield’s outbreak cost the public Animal Health Inspector sector over £3 billion and was very concerned that the private sector more than despite asking Mr Dyson to £5 billion. Volunteers needed in North Sheffield to help children with reading Volunteers are needed in and around Stocksbridge, Sheffield, to help children grow a love of reading as part of a programme which sees trained reading helpers from the local community visit primary schools twice a week. The initiative is run by Beanstalk, a national charity which recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work one-to-one with children aged 3 to 13 in a variety of ways, turning them into confident, passionate and able readers. Once trained, each volunteer helps three children one-to-one at a local school two times a week for 30 minutes each at a time. The sessions are fun, interactive and hugely beneficial to the children receiving extra support. The one-to-one time with each child enables reading helpers to tailor each session to the child’s specific needs and to pass on the magic of stories and books. Lesley, a former manager at the local authority before she retired, has been

a Beanstalk reading helper for almost a decade. As an avid reader from a humble background, she experienced herself how a love of reading can have a transformational effect on education and life chances. “Once they find reading enjoyable they will fly! One little boy in Year three told me that he had started school in Pakistan. He was decoding every letter and reading with no fluency. A few months later he was reading a Michael Morpurgo book and asking me questions about the story which showed me that he understood it all!” Amy Mortimer is Area Manager for Beanstalk: “The reading programmes we deliver at Beanstalk are so important because there is an opportunity here to make a big difference to so many children. Not only does Lesley help children with the ability to read, she gives the children their time and undivided attention and the key to a whole world of stories and characters, which helps them

Fire & Police recruiting for Prince’s Trust Team Programme

SOUTH Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) and South Yorkshire Police (SYP) have teamed up with the Prince’s Trust to deliver the Prince’s Trust Team Programme – and there is still time to apply. Two Team Programmes are due to start soon in Sheffield and Barnsley and South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are recruiting now. The 12-week personal development course is for unemployed 16 – 25 year olds. The Programme offers work experience, qualifications, practical skills, community projects and a residential week. Individuals will gain new skills, mix with new people and make

new friends, they will be given help with job-hunting and CV writing and most importantly a big boost to their confidence and a real sense of achievement. South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Team Leader Rhian Oxley said: “Team Programme is about more than simply boosting young people’s employment skills. It gives them hope, confidence and the opportunity to make a difference.” SYFR Area Manager Steve Helps, said: “The 12 week course is all about building the confidence of the young people and equipping them with the skills qualifications and experience to find employment and build better lives for themselves. From classes in CV

building to work placements we will be able to offer participants crucial skills and insights they otherwise will never experience. I am truly proud of the role the fire service is playing in helping these young people aspire to a better future.” They are now recruiting for these Team Programme’s based in Barnsley and for the first time in Sheffield, to be part of it and to take that first step contact John Daley on 07769 887249 or princestrust@syfire.gov.uk. penistoneparamount. co.uk The Bolsterstone lads are having a busy time. Last Saturday they enjoyed a warm reception at a packed Lomas Hall, Stannington, in a joint concert with Stannington Brass Band and their training band and next month BMVC are singing with their friends Worrall Male Voice Choir and New Mill Male Voice Choir with

Loxley Silver Band in a concert at Sheffield Cathedral in memory of Mark Rotchell, former Worrall MVC chairman and organist at Christ Church, Stocksbridge, who died aged 64 last October. Later this month a dinner will be held at Wortley Hall to mark the retirements of BMVC musical director Fran Wells after 24 years and Lorraine Pearson, accompanist, after nearly 34 years. Fran

will be staying on as deputy musical director to Daniel Timmins, his former pupil at King Edward’s, Sheffield, and Lorraine has agreed to step in when Kim Kaye, the choir’s new accompanist, is unavailable.

Head at Stocksbridge, Adrian Smith and Mandy Aitken the Artistic Director of Steel Valley Beacon recognise that training

in the arts is beneficial to those taking part in so many ways – improving confidence and life skills generally, for community involvement and for sheer enjoyment.

Several members of Beacon and former members have gone on to have careers in the arts. They hope to

work together with other partners to create more opportunities to access training in the arts acting, singing, writing, back stage, instrumental leading to recognised qualifications and to continue to bring some top-quality shows to the area.

Rotary club clean up on bypass

Stocksbridge leisure centre fancy dress

WORTLEY Rotary Club conducted a litterpick after president Trevor Fletcher noticed the amount of waste at the side of a road.

The Swimathon Life Guard Team all in fancy dress ready to start yesterday in the Main Pool..

Mr Fletcher told Look Local: “A couple of weeks ago on my travel to our club iI journeyed up the Stocksbridge bypass coming off at Wortley and I was

amazed at how much rubbish was on the edge – I couldn’t see the grass verge. So I asked at the club if we could do a litter pick and we arranged to do it on Saturday. “We met on the slip road and put a vehicle there for safety as well as a sign and proceeded to pick. Two hours and

14 bags later we could see the verge - what a difference it makes. “We at Rotary do regular litter picks in different areas and after the response we got off people driving past and giving their thumbs up and shouting well done we are doing another around the Wortley area.

“We would like to invite anybody to join us doing our picks we will supply picking equipment such as bags and gloves. “Please call myself, Trevor, on 07768898200 or David on 07506 531033 and we will give you the information you require.”

These QHHG WR EH ÂżOOHG LQ ZLWK QXPEHUV WKDW complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Joyce Webb nee Fieldsend

Cyclists Protest

Dear Sir,

Joyce the cousin of Mothers,

Dear Editor,

John Gosling At the other end of the hutch, Two black and whites, perhaps Dutch?

Well done Clare Wilson May I through your Look Local. May I say that it is a very long time since I have read a story so accurate and truthful and composed. 23/4/2018 I fully agree with Clare Wilson about spending money on a police service that we have not got. I have noticed that yes we sell our labour MPs and councillors out when they want our vote. Otherwise they do nothing. I like what our MP did regarding 3x Nat west branches closing, we was told that she (Angela Smith) presented the RBS (who we own) with a petition how daring. Since Clare Wilson wrote her letter, I know I’ve seen 3x police cars in Deepcar and Stocksbridge may be their sat navs are broken (who knows) Thank you Clare Wilson.

This reminded me of an infant lad, Who told his teacher not too bad, That one and one made twenty two! He knew having kept rabbits plenty!!! Joyce who played the Piano forte, Tickling the ivories was her forte! Kitten on the keys her signature tune, Often for parties, especially in June.

13

As the Tour de Yorkshire once again wends its way through the county seemingly on a tide of popular goodwill, I therefore thought that it may be interesting to contrast such modern day practice with that as outlined in the following brief report, which appears in the Stocksbridge column of the April 2nd 1927 edition of the Penistone Express on page 7, entitled: CYCLISTS’ PROTEST. Which relates that “Resentment is felt by members of the Stocksbridge and District Cycling Club, who had arranged a hill climb up the famous Dun Hill at Stocksbridge last Sunday morning, but were prevented from holding the trial on official instructions. We are informed that the trial was prohibited owing to the protests of representatives of various religious bodies in the district. A large crowd attended to witness the trials, but were disappointed, when they learned that it was postponed until to-morrow (Sat.). The complaint was intensified when a large number of motor cyclists passed through the district along the main road, engaged in a motor cycle trial. Dun Hill is a by-road from Stocksbridge”. So such was the power of religion in those days? Times when such events were not run with the sole purpose of money making in mind on the part of the organisers and participants. Thus making one wonder what would happen today if the clergy objected to such events taking place on the Sabbath. Yours faithfully,

J. Crabtree

New War Memorial Tree for Mortomley Park

May 4th I and the team I am the public face of, set up the volunteer group ‘The real S35 crew’

I am pleased to confirm that Mortomley park has been chosen as one of 36 parks across the city that will receive a new War Memorial Tree, during the centenary year marking the end of the First World War. I took part in recent consultations with the local community and friends groups, and the park was identified as a suitable place for planting of a large oak tree; with an associated plaque to remember all those from the High Green and Chapeltown area who tragically lost their lives in the conflict.

This is a good cause, friends of type group, made up of High Greens young people, (12 to 18) this group will carry out voluntary work in and around High Green, such as litter picking, Graffiti removal, etc. We started recruitment Friday 4th and as of today Saturday 5th we have signed up 19 young people, this is an action team made up of the young. The aim being to teach the future generation the power of Community spirit, plus other positive community action. Details on my website ecclesfield- independents.uk or facebook page. David Ogle Councillor & High Green Volunteer

In addition Labour, working alongside the British Legion, have made a commitment that the Council by Jenny Wren will dedicate Mortomely Park as a Centenary Field in Trust. This new status means that we have ensured that Mortomley Park will be protected in perpetuity. This should hopefully put to bed the rumour that the Park was to be developed on. This was never going to be the case but Labour have acted to ensure that there can now be no doubt about this.

2019 National Fish & Chip Awards opens for entries Is your local fish and chip shop the best in the UK? The 2019 National Fish & Chip Awards are now open for entry with the quest now on to find the champion businesses that will be crowned at the grand final ceremony in London in January next year. Run by Seafish, the public body that supports the £6bn UK Seafood Industry, the National Fish & Chip Awards are widely regarded as the Oscars of the fish and chip world, with 14 different award categories recognising the best of the best. As well as the fish and chips, the awards celebrate operators who run their businesses sustainably, display marketing innovation and focus on staff and product development. To find the best in the industry, a team of experienced judges travel the UK to mystery dine and appraise the operational practices of respective fish and chip businesses. Fish and chips aren’t just one of the UK’s favourite foods; they’re an institution. From being one of the few fares not rationed during the Second World War, to a favourite snack of The Beatles, fish and chips are an integral part of British culture. For the past 30 years Seafish has celebrated the best of the best across the UK’s fish and chips sector, including takeaways, restaurants, pubs, cafes, canteens and mobile operators who serve up the tastiest and most sustainable fish and chips. “As a nation, we eat in the region of 382 million portions of fish and chips every year so shops and restaurants that are successful in the awards can take

pride in the fact that they are amongst the crème de la crème when it comes to fish and chip businesses. “Everyone has a favourite fish and chip shop and we are asking the public to make sure their favourite gets the recognition it deserves by encouraging them to enter the awards.” To find out more about the awards – which are free to enter – just head online to www.fishandchipawards.com or email awardsenquiry@seafish.co.uk for further information.

I would like to thank all those who voted for me in the election of 3rd May, and indeed anyone who voted at all. The turnout was only 29%. Although I was unsuccessful in winning the City Council seat for East Ecclesfield, I shall continue to serve my community by acting as Chair of the Board of Trustees of Ecclesfield library (run by volunteers), contributing to the Ecclesfield Civil Parish Archiving Project and finding new ways to fundraise for local good causes. Paint your walls (and fences)

This is one of the easiest things to do, and has a dramatic effect. White washed walls will automatically feel more open than pretty much any other colour, but providing you opt for any light colour you should find the same is true.

Compact furniture

We all want one of those massive swinging benches, a beautiful weather-treated natural wood table, and a padded recliner, but these things may not be practical. We do want something to sit on regardless, though, so look for furniture that saves on space.

Declutter

Although there are convincing statistics that show the majority of Britons have access to some sort of outdoor space- even with the 'steep' decline since 1990, 90% of households have some greenerythis doesn't necessarily mean we all have decent sized gardens. From terrace rows to new build estates, space suitable for building is at a premium in the United Kingdom, and this means that often gardens come secondary in the list of priorities. Don't think that just because you have a small garden it doesn't mean you can't still make a very big impression, though. Here are five key things to consider when looking at a redesign, all of which guarantee to maximise what's there for maximum impact.

Over the years, our outdoor space can become cluttered with unused plant pots, watering cans, old footballs, beheaded gnomes from that time someone tripped over at the BBQ party, etcetera etcetera. Getting rid of all this needs to be a priority to free up room.

Think in circles

If you try to make any central space circular- whether it’s a lawn or a paved area- then you will notice that the whole garden or yard begins to

@northdeckline

northerndeckline

feel like it has been opened up. Yes, it’s nothing but an optical illusion, but it’s a very effective (albeit labour intensive) one.

Intelligent lighting

No, this isn’t the latest device to hit the Internet of Thing, and we understand that lighting isn’t something everyone is in a position to introduce. Nevertheless, if you are using lighting position sources in a way that creates depth in shallow spaces.

100km Tigers settle for Audax a point Tel: 01226-762424 Fax: 01226-762984 E-mail: angie.watmough@nhs.net

SHEFFIELD were forced to settle for a point in a 45-45 draw with Peterborough after a tight contest at Owlerton on Thursday.

The Window Centre Tigers were never able to shake off the Panthers, who secured 4-2s in each of the last two races to go away the happier of the two sides after the Championship encounter. Sheffield’s Charles Wright (pictured) looked to have done enough to see the home side through by winning a race-of-the-season contender in Heat 10, but the withdrawal of captain Kyle Howarth and a tough night for temporary signing Jan Graversen proved costly. Already suffering from last week’s accident, Howarth suffered a twisted knee and was only able to take two rides – retiring from Heat 1 in which the Panthers banked maximum points, and then pulling out of the meeting after finishing third in Heat 6. The visitors took the lead three times in the first half of the contest, with Sheffield reserves James Shanes and Jack Smith notching a 5-1 in Heat 2 to cancel out the early reverse. A Panthers 4-2 headed up by Emil Grondal in Heat 5 put them back ahead, only for Todd Kurtz to pass Ulrich Ostergaard on the last lap of the next race

to level the scores again.

stretch of the imagination.

Michael Palm Toft squeezed inside Wright on the first lap of Heat 7 as the visitors edged ahead once more, before Kurtz and Shanes slammed in a Heat 8 5-1 to put Tigers ahead for the first time. With the lead at four points, Wright produced a truly memorable Heat 10 effort to first go past Palm Toft and then reel in and dive inside Nike Lunna on the last bend for a tremendous victory.

“We don’t have any excuses, we have to work with what we’ve got, and we have to do a better job. “Kyle twisted his knee tonight which is not ideal, but I think that’s a consequence of riding when not fully fit, and I do think with a fit Kyle and with Jan having a meeting under his belt, that result wouldn’t have happened. “Peterborough caught us on a bad day and made us pay, but the reality is we haven’t lost. A draw is frustrating, but we need to pick ourselves us up for Glasgow. “I have to add that Charles has been superb for us this season. He’s been faultless, he’s given it 100 per cent wherever we’ve gone and he’s been full value on every track. “Personally, I’d like him to make it easier for me by getting out of the start, but I suppose I was guilty of that in my racing career as well, so I’m probably getting it back there! He’s been great, and we do have plenty of positives.” A preview of Friday’s trip to Glasgow will be issued in the morning.

Although he couldn’t quite get the better of Scott Nicholls in Heat 11, Wright then passed the former British Champion on the outside in Heat 13 with Lasse Bjerre’s third place sending Tigers into the last two races two points up. But they were unable to maintain the advantage as Palm Toft headed Shanes in Heat 14 with Simon Lambert snatching third place from Graversen. And with Tigers needing a 3-3 from the last-heat decider, Bjerre was squeezed out on turn one, and although Wright quickly cleared Palm Toft, the gap to Nicholls was just too great as the Panthers squared the meeting. Sheffield boss Simon Stead said: “Obviously it feels like a loss, but it isn’t, and we have a few difficulties at the moment. They pushed us hard, they’re a good team and we aren’t at full strength by any

Last Sunday Birdwell Wheelers ran the re-organised 100 km Audax ride from Birdwell to Snaith and back via the Thorne flatlands. Originally postponed on 18th March due to snow, the weather on Sunday was much more favourable. Wheelers Steve Myatt, Tony Lodge, Tina Oakes, Chris Jenkins, Dave Hudson, John Woodhouse ,Paul Mynett ,Dave Scargill and Rodger Holmes were joined by 42 other riders from as far away as Leicester, Birmingham and Glossop. The route took them through the quiet lanes around Askern and Womersley climbing back up the Dearne valley back to Birdwell Community Hall where club members provided post-ride food and drinks. The Wheeler’s next Audax is a 100km event on Sunday 10th June riding over Holme Moss and the Snake Pass from Birdwell and the club invites riders to participate in the hilly challenge. On the same day Wheeler Paul Heggie rode in the City Road Club 15 Mile Open Time Trial at Newport in the East Riding. Despite a strong headwind on the out leg Heggie recorded a time of 37m 52s which broke his own club age record at 64 years old , set in March, by a margin of 1m 25s. Unfortunately the first of the Wheeler’s club time trials on the 5 mile course at Thurgoland to Hoylandswaine roundabout and back had to be called off due to weather conditions so next Tuesday will see the first event of the season. More details on this and all the above can be found on the club’s new website: http://www.birdwellwheelerscyclingclub.co.uk

Lambwath Lions 22 -25 Sheffield Hawks Travelling 90 minutes up the M18 to a very sunny Hull is perhaps not the best preparation for a game. However, there is no substitute for the three ways that we win games. Firstly, ticker. This team simply did not take a backward step and in the last 10 minutes they showed total resolve and resilience to defeat the league leaders. Secondly, you need to control the ball. Throughout this match Hawks were patient, persistent and completed most sets. Thirdly you need discipline. No penalties given away for 70 minutes and making the right choices when presented with the high-speed decision making that Rugby League demands. Again, Hawks chose well and scored when the opportunity presented itself. The first half ended 12-6 to Lambwath. Bailey Thompson wriggled through three tackles to score from close in. Corey Hall added the extra and half time in punishing heat allowed the team to reset and realise that the league leaders were there to be taken. Defensively, Hawks held their line defensively in a strong aggressive style that Lambwath rarely broke through. Joseph Tipping, Robert Harden, Max Blackburn and Josh Bilton all made yards and the intensity of the whole team The second half saw Hawks maintain their shape, discipline and intensity. Hall and Pat Wakefield totally outplayed the Lambwath centres and forwards. Joe Littlewood and Reuben Katerregga tackled anything that moved with Spencer Poppleton distributing simply and effectively. From 10 metres out, after Hawks had completed an 80-metre set, Littlewood scored, Wakefield converting. Lambwath took advantage of a substitution to score immediately from the kick off. This left the scores 18-12 with ten minutes left. At this point the team picked up its game and dominated at every part of the game. Harry Edgar, after a sweet passing move, pinned his ears back and scored from 50 metres with the try of the match. Wakefield converted from under the posts. From the kick-off a superb set gave Hall the chance to score from 30 metres out. The Hawks were breaking the line at will and tackling like trains. From the next kick off another excellent drive, largely through the line breaks of Katerregga, Josh Bilton and Hall gave Spencer Poppleton the kick of the match, a perfect drop goal from 35 metres out. Despite a last flurry from Lambwath, leading to a questionable try in the corner, Hawks defended resolutely and thoroughly deserved their win. Particularly sweet was the excellent team performance that broke the Hull teams resolve in the last 10 minutes. If two further tries hadn’t been chalked off for questionable reasons this would have been an even more impressive victory.

Oughtibridge close in on title Cotts Fc 1-6 Oughtibridge This Thursday will see Oughtibridge WMFC visit Chapeltown in a game which will decide the title, This after the War Memorial remain top with just one game left to play after their 6-1 victory at Cotts FC and also took their season’s goal tally to a record 116. Callum Chambers and Matt Harrison both missed good chances to give ‘Bridge the lead before they were given a shock when Chris Blythen put Cotts ahead. They weren’t behind for long and soon started to carve the home defence apart with some terrific attacking play, Ollie Black and Chas Tunnard combined to set up Ross Brown who made no mistake to equalise.

‘Bridge then took the lead before half time when Harrison was felled in the box and Chambers scored from the spot. Chambers netted his 32nd of the season to double the lead before the Excellent Matt Harrison put the perfect cross in for Brown, who again made no mistake netting his 18th of the season from midfield, Oughtibridge by now where in full flow and totally dominating proceedings and when Ollie Black made it five before Harrison deservedly put his name on the score sheet. This leaves a title shoot out this Thursday 7.30pm kick off at St Georges Park, Thorncliffe Recreation in the seasons final game of the season when Dave Hudsons men visit second place Chapeltown.
