Safer roads and refurbished playgrounds in Chapeltown

THERE is good news for pupils, parents, carers and staff at Chapeltown’s Lound Junior School as double yellow lines are to be added on the road, Lound Side. The new parking restrictions will stretch from Housley Park to the bus stop next to Mount Pleasant. At present, parked cars opposite the school mean that children often have to move in-between parked cars to cross the road. This also means that for those crossing the road their vision can be obstructed.

This is clearly a safety concern, and a local lollipop lady brought this to the attention of Councillor Andy Bainbridge. Following this, Cllr Bainbridge has been working with the school, police and Council road safety officers to help resolve this problem. The Council has agreed to the new road markings to make the road safer to cross. Councillor Bainbridge said: “I am committed to deterring drivers from parking outside of school gates and I am

glad the council agreed to my proposals for Lound Junior School. “I would also like to point out that under Labour the Council are the first local authority in the country to impose fines on drivers who leave their car engine running outside of school gates – as this smoke can have a damaging effect on young lungs.” This news follows the recent announcements that that the playground at Chapeltown Park is again open to the public following work completed on the site.

The completed drainage work at the site will help to ensure that the playground is more robust in the face of severe weather and should help the playground area for years to come. Cllr Bainbridge added: “I’m really pleased the site is once again open, following delays caused by the unforeseen bad weather such as the ‘Beast from the East’, and it is good to see children already making use of the playground in the recent good weather.”

push chairs into Chapeltown Park – the entrance on Cowley Lane – and to improve parking around the parks’ public toilets. Cllr Bainbridge added: “I have asked council officers and the relevant cabinet member to come up with some proposals. I have also fed my own ideas into the discussions and I am hopeful that a solution can be reached soon.”

Councillors have also committed to improve access for disabled people and

Medal experts visit to help raise money for local ex-service charities

THE week commencing Monday June 4 could be a fantastic opportunity for residents of Sheffield & Barnsley to beat the credit crunch and cash in on their inherited and unwanted medals. As well as coins and all associated items or unwanted gold and silver items for this is the week that the team of experts from The Medal Centre will be running a week of specialist coin and medal valuation days in and around South Yorkshire with venues in Hillsborough, Darton, Sheffield, Silkstone common, Killamarsh, Mapplewell and Barnsley. Each of the specialists present are experts in their own chosen field and they will be on hand to give free verbal valuations on any inherited medals and military items as well as coins and banknotes and most other small collectibles including scrap gold

and broken jewellery in any form but particularly gold coins such as sovereigns and kruggerands or gold watches and watch chains. Please remember that any one of the experts will be happy to make you an immediate on the spot cash offer for your unwanted items and they will be happy to offer the very best prices available and most people are delighted at the large amounts they are offered. This is because each of the valuers in attendance are members of respected trade organisations such as the Orders & Medals Research Society and the British Numismatic Trade Association The Medal Centre last have been asked to return to a number of local venues due to the huge response to the event held at this venue last time that they visited.

One local resident was absolutely thrilled to accept a four figure sum for her small tin box containing her late uncle’s medals for bravery during WW1 along with his campaign medals for service in the Boer War and WW1 and a small selection of gold and silver coins along with a small amount of broken gold jewellery. The lady said that not only was she astounded to discover how much her items were worth but the money could not have come at a better time due to the current financial situation and on top of all that she was delighted to be able to help local ex-servicemen and women. However, if you cannot attend on the day one of the experts from The Medal Centre will be happy to call and see you at your convenience and they can be contacted on 01434 609794 or 07950 421704.
