HILLSBOROUGH MAN’S FAMILY DEMAND ANSWERS THE FAMILY of a man, formerly of Hillsborough, have said they “need answers” after his dead body was found wrapped in plastic in the American desert. Andy Jackson’s body was found by a walker in September 2017. It was near the village of Magdalena and forensic reports say it had been there for at least a month. However, following the grim discovery, Andy’s family back here in Britain didn’t find out about his death until January. The 51-year-old was born in Nottingham before moving to S6. He then emigrated to Albuquerque, the state in which his body was found. He had married in America and changed his name to AJ Gryffin. Although his family had lost contact with Andy, they followed his new life on Facebook, where he hadn’t posted since just before his death.

“I wouldn’t rule out that he could have become involved in something underhand to survive over there financially as he could be a bit of a loose cannon. “But we’ve been given no evidence of that. The worst thing is not knowing what happened to Andy. “He was more than six foot tall and he wasn’t shy about sticking up for himself. So I don’t think he would have rolled over easily. It’s a grim thought.” “We need answers. Andy’s still in a morgue in Albuquerque and the police don’t seem to be doing anything. We’re still waiting for a death certificate.” Speaking to The Mirror, Andy’s friend Matthew Whiddon, 53, said: “AJ really wanted to work as a chef and open a

restaurant. He’d found a guy who was willing to put the money up. “It was to host dinner parties specialising in marijuana pizzas in Colorado, where the drug was legalised a few years ago. AJ said he could make edible marijuana that he could cook in the food so that you couldn’t taste it. “He had tons of aggravation with a guy before he died, and he’d got mixed up with a bit of a bad crowd. I’m sure I know who killed AJ. I thought straight away his murder had to be personal – and in my mind there’s only one person who could have done it. “I think AJ knew too much about the guy and probably threatened to expose his wrongdoing. As soon as I heard where his body had been found, I was sure who had done it. “Even though I was his best friend, the police have never contacted me. I’m not a hard man to find.”

CONMEN STRIKE IN HILLSBOROUGH AS BOGUS OFFICIALS SWARM IN SHEFFIELD

POLICE in Sheffield have released CCTV images of three men who they believe may have information about a number of bogus official investigations reported in May this year, including an incident of impersonating police officers in Hillsborough. Sometime between 2.50pm and 3pm on Tuesday 1 May, the owner of a property on Lister Crescent reported a man claiming to be a police officer had requested to check if an money was kept in the house, as a number of burglaries had been reported in the area. The owner became suspicious and asked the man to leave. No cash was stolen in the incident. At around 4.30pm on Tuesday May 1, it was reported two men posing as police officers had attended a property on Eskdale Road, Sheffield,

claiming to be investigating the use of counterfeit money. The men stated they needed to seize any remaining money in the house as part of the investigation. A large quantity of cash was stolen in the incident. On Thursday May 3, at 9.30am, the owner of a property on Sheffield Road, Woodhouse, contacted police to report a man purporting to be a police officer had begun asking the owner about cash that was kept at the property. Again, the owner became suspicious of this activity and refused to provide any information. This was followed by three further incidents reported between 11am and 1pm on May 3. At 11am it was reported a property on Daresbury Road had been visited by man who stated he was investigating tax evasion and needed to see bank

books and any cash that was kept in the house. Due to the man being challenged to provide ID, he left the property.

tlewood Drive, demanding to see any cash in the house as part of an ongoing investigation. Nothing was taken in the incident.

At around 11.30am, on Hallamgate Road, an elderly victim reported being taken to a cash machine by a man who claimed he was a police officer. The man stated he needed the victim to provide a quantity of cash as part of an investigation.

An investigation has been ongoing into all of the reported incidents and officers are now appealing to identify the men pictured.

Later that day, at 1.30pm, a woman reported a man investigating fraud had requested to see any cash in the property on Grove Road. A large quantity of cash was stolen in the incident. The following day police received a similar report by the owner of a property on Rowburn Drive at 3.20pm. A quantity of cash was again stolen. Between 11.30am and 12pm on Friday May 11, it was reported a man had gone to a property on Lit-

Officers would like to encourage all members of the public to be extra vigilant when answering the door to people they don’t know, to always ask for proof of ID and to contact 101 if they have any concerns. If you recognise these men or have any information that can assist officers with their enquiries, please report it via 101 quoting incident number 679 of 1 May. Anonymous information can also be given to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

MARIE CELEBRATES BIG 100TH BIRTHDAY HIGH Green woman Marie Matthewman celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday June 9. The resident of Newgate Close was surrounded by friends, family and had deputy lord mayor Tony Downing as a guest. Everyone gathered to enjoy entertainment from singer and dancer Brian Dennis. The party was organised by friend Winnie Gunstall, helped by Esme Hicks. Instead of presents, Marie asked for donations and £253 was split between Cystic Fibrosis and Western Park Hospital. Marie was married at the age of 21 in Wortley Church, where she was also christened.

ROYAL APPROVAL FOR LOCAL FOOD BANK DUO

LAST week, Ray and Ronnie Hawley, the volunteer leaders of the Stocksbridge Food Bank, were invited to Buckingham Palace for the garden party there. It might seem an odd juxtaposition of a food bank at a royal garden party, but it is in recognition of the work that Ray and Ronnie and the team of loyal volunteers do week in and week out. They ensure that the people in Stocksbridge who are in absolute need get the help they need when they need it. It also recognises the weekly support from generous people across the town who every week supply food and other household goods, to make life possible for members of our community in urgent need. Ray and Ronnie are members at Christ Church, and the minister there, Rev Ian Lucraft, said: “Ray and Ronnie, with the team of volunteers, have given an enormous amount of time and effort to ensure the Food Bank copes with rising demand, especially as changes in the benefits system mean that peoples’ changing benefits can mean that they are without support for a long time before things are sorted out. It is very good to know that their work, with the volunteer team, is recognised in this way.” Ray said: “Well, what a great few days. Here we are walking through the gardens at Buckingham Palace. We had chosen to walk through the gardens to the main garden party reception area from the Hyde Park entrance gate.”

CAOS present Annie Jr production CHAPELTOWN Amateur Operatic Society Academy, the youth group of CAOS Musical Theatre Society, presents the hit musical of Annie Jr in June at the Lantern Theatre Sheffield.

This will be CAOS Academy’s fourth show at the Lantern, and with a cast of over 25 between the ages eight to 16, this is sure to be another fantastic production. CAOS Academy was set up to support and develop young people’s

passion in musical theatre and performing arts.

Annie is a show full of well known and loved songs, including, ‘Hard Knock Life’, ‘Little Girls’, ‘NYC’, ‘Easy Street’, ‘You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile!’ and of course probably the most famous of all ‘Tomorrow’. This hit Broadway and West End musical is based on the famous Harold Gray comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ with

Go wild in Greno Woods GRENO Woods is part of a large area of woodland in North Sheffield including coniferous plantations and ancient woodland glades. It has been owned and managed by the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust since 2012 and is a great site to visit to walk your dog, spot some wildlife or try out some downhill mountain biking (if you have the right safety equipment!) Coming up on site in June is the Big, Wild Weekend event, part of 30 Days Wild where people sign up to do something that connects them with nature everyday. You can sign up for that by searching Facebook for ‘30 Days Wild’. On Sunday June 17 from 11am to 3pm, the Trust team will be on site in

the woods running the Toddler Trail, orienteering, hunting for geocaches and den building. This event is totally free but people who would like to come along need to sign up at our website www.wildsheffield.com.whats-on For those who are keen on moths, they will be setting up a moth trap on site on Wednesday June 20 from 8.30pm till dark to see what species can be recorded with local moth expert Ben Keywood. If you would like to come along to this event booking is essential and it costs £4 for members of the wildlife trust and £6 for non members. Visit the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust.

a score by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and book by Thomas Meehan.

With equal measures of pluck and positivity, little orphan Annie charms everyone’s hearts despite a next-to-nothing start in 1930s New York City. Annie is determined to find the parents who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of an orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan.

Annie eventually finds a new home and family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary, Grace Farrell, and a lovable dog named Sandy.

This show in particular will be touring the UK in 2019, but CAOS Academy are giving you the chance to see this well-loved feel good family musical between Thursday June 28 and Saturday June 30 - all evening performances start

at 7.30pm with a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are on sale now and priced at £10, with limited availability for all performances – booking is via telephone 0114 2551776 or online www.lanterntheatre.org.uk and go to the whats on section. Avoid the penalties of drink/drug driving this World Cup THE FIFA World Cup begins this month, and this might just be the year that England make it through to the final, which means there will be ample opportunities to revel in the festivities. With many pubs and venues showing live matches, South Yorkshire Safer Roads Partnership is once again reminding road users not to mix drink or drugs with driving or riding. Countywide Road Safety Officers from SYSRP will have a presence at public locations in South Yorkshire throughout the competition highlighting the potential consequences of drink and drug driving.

As well as warning people about the physical consequences of collisions, the team will also stress the lasting impact that drink and drug driving has, both on the lives of victims and their families, and on the drivers themselves. Members of the public will also be able to ‘see’ first-hand how their perception can be affected by trying on ‘beer goggles’ which simulate the visual impairment which often accompanies alcohol or drug consumption.

SYSRP will also share the anti drink/drug driving message via its social media platforms, and encourage everyone to retweet and repost it to their friends and family. Though there is a legal limit to how much alcohol can be in a person’s system before they can drive, it is impossible to say how many drinks or units it will take to reach it. It is also possible to still be over the legal limit the following day. An average liver can process approximately one unit of alcohol per hour, starting one hour after drinking has stopped. This means that if someone drinks 12 units, it can take them roughly 13 hours to fully sober up. Drugs – be they prescription or over-the-counter medicines, or illegal substances such as cannabis or cocaine – can stay in a person’s system a lot longer. Joanne Wehrle, Safer Roads Manager at SYSRP, said: “We have faith! England are going to score plenty over the next few weeks, but for us the most important goal is making sure everyone makes it home to see the next match. “Whether England make it all the way through or crash out in

the group stages, our message remains the same: if you’ve had a drink or are under the influence of drugs, don’t drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs remains one of the most common contributing factors to fatal road collisions. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect your reaction times, which could have devastating consequences for you, your family and friends. “Celebrations can quickly turn into commiserations if you are stopped by the police. You may be banned from driving, have points added on your licence, face an unlimited fine, or even imprisonment. This will mean increased insurance costs, potential job loss and even restrictions on travel to other countries such as the United States. “There is more information and advice on our website at sysrp. co.uk/drinkdriving.” England’s first game, against Tunisia, is at 7.00pm on Monday 18 June.

ON Saturday, 100 superheroes from all over Sheffield swarmed along the Sheffield Tinsley Canal Towpath to raise cash for the Dementia Revolution. They were all there: Superman, Batman, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, the Avengers, Wolverine, Power Rangers and loads more besides. The event welcomed everybody of all ages and abilities, so we had superheroes in wheelchairs, superheroes aged five as well as 85; superheroes who were blind, superheroes who were fighting

all kinds of illnesses and personal battles, and at the finish line everybody got a bespoke medal, a celebratory glass of fizz or a bottle of beer, and a free family BBQ. The event was run in conjunction with the Canal & River Trust, and raised around £500 for charity. It was such a huge success that the next event will be on July 14 - the Comic Con/Cosplay Canter. 5km, 10km and half marathon distances and a totally family friendly, wheelchair

friendly, dog friendly route, with all proceeds going to benefit Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Prostate Cancer charities. There are no age, ability or time restrictions. Absolutely everybody is welcome and organisers are also encouraging donations to local food banks at the start line. It's an awesome route, a totally friendly event, and a fabulous atmosphere, with something for everyone. Anyone is welcome to book at https://racebest.com/races/xqqzu

Valley In Bloom update Once again Valley in Bloom would like to thank the head teachers, staff and pupils who made it possible for the containers on the precinct to be planted with summer bedding. Stocksbridge has six schools who all sponsor their own school’s container, planting it twice a year with seasonal bedding. It is always a pleasure to work with them and we are grateful for their support. They may be interested to know that one of the divers who does the Sheffield to Liverpool run regularly commented on how attractive our main road looks. Many thanks to all who help. We hope you have noticed that the summer plants are now in place. Thank you to the new people who came to help us, it certainly made things easier! The important job of watering the plants is now our priority. We do this with a water bowser which needs to be towed with a sturdy vehicle. If you have a 4WD or similar and could offer us a couple of hours of your time, we would really appreciate it. Please contact either of the people below to find out a bit more. Thank you from the Valley in Bloom Team! Catherine – catherine.cotterill@hotmail.co.uk Angela – angela211267@gmail.com

Another election Just been told we’ve got another election next month in High Green. I’m fed up of these middle aged and older men with too much time on their hands and a desperation for power standing time and time again. If they really want to do the best for the area, let’s have a vote on scrapping the parish council and cutting our council tax for once. I’m sick to death of councillors wanting to run schemes to clean up our parks and keep problem teenagers off the streets.

If people want their taxes spending on these sort of things, they can donate to charities who will do Craig Minto. something about these issues without the majority of us having our taxes put up at every opportunity to pay for it. High Green Debs

Burncross Action Team install new seat in the park

THE Steel Valley Project have had two strimmers stolen whilst working at Fox Valley on Tuesday June 12.

One of the strimmers was a Stihl FS130 and the other was a Stihl FS400 and has ‘SVP2’ written on it.

The thieves are believed to have been in a silver Toyota Rav Four when they struck between 1.15pm and 1.25pm, on Fox Valley Way above the East Bank Works (pictured).

If you have any information, you can call the police on 101. quoting incident number 452 on the 12/06/18.

The seat is made from recycled materials for low maintenance and was installed for the benefit of all the local people who use the nearby woodland and green spaces. Many thanks to the Parks and Countryside Ranger Service for fitting the bench and Dave Rice Area Manager North Parks and Public Realm for his support.

REMBRANDT ON DISPLAY AS DUTCH MASTERS VISIT

IT will be an exciting summer at Cannon Hall Museum as visitors have the chance to see an exhibition of Old Masters by world class Dutch painters. The exhibition, open from Saturday June 16 to Sunday September 16, is the culmination of detailed research into Barnsley’s fantastic collection of fine art at Cannon Hall. The exhibition and programme of tours, talks and activities provide a chance to find out more about the artists, their subjects and the times in which they lived. Many of the artworks to be displayed are from the Harvey Bequest given in 2003 through Art Fund to the Museum. Paintings include portraits, seascapes, Italianate landscapes and still lifes. The exhibition also features loans of important works

from York Art Gallery, Museums Sheffield and two significant pieces from the National Gallery through the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund; ‘An Elderly Man as Saint Paul’ by Rembrandt, and ‘Skittle Players outside an Inn’ by Jan Steen. These loans all provide the opportunity to see different artists of the period brought together in one exhibition. Created by the Garfield Weston Foundation and Art Fund, the Weston Loan Programme is designed to directly fund and empower regional and smaller local authority museums to borrow major works or collections of art from the UK’s national museums and galleries. Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place said: “The exhibition is an excellent way for visi-

tors to find out more about ‘Dutch Masters’, which is a really fascinating period in art history. We’re fortunate in Barnsley to have such a wonderful collection of work from the time, and it will be incredible to see the paintings showcased alongside work by artists such as Rembrandt.

Some of the most talented curators in the UK have imagined the art, objects and exhibitions which promise to transform the experiences of their audiences. We are delighted that the local community in Barnsley will get to see these amazing paintings.”

“Barnsley Museums have a wonderful reputation for bringing exciting and high profile exhibitions to the area, and this one will be no different. We are certain people will travel from all across the county to see the paintings in the serene surroundings of Cannon Hall.”

Steven Deuchar, Art Fund director, added, ‘We knew the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund addressed a vital need: our national museums want to widen access to the collections they hold, and institutions around the UK want to share these works with their audiences. The response has been overwhelming. We’re pleased to provide the means to enable the greater sharing of art, but, just as importantly, to help empower museums to realise their ambitions.’

Philippa Charles, Garfield Weston Foundation director, said, ‘‘We have been blown away by the ambition and creativity of museums and galleries across the UK and Barnsley’s idea really stood out.

Work underway for new Fox Valley ice cream parlour WORK is underway this week to build a brand new unit in the piazza area of Fox Valley – improving the outdoor seating area and creating space for a new ice cream parlour at the centre. The 1,000 sq. ft. unit is currently under construction in the area between Central Bean and Ponti’s Italian Kitchen. The work is expected to be completed in August and will create a stun-

ning new unit as well as a new location for the Fox Valley outdoor television - the piazza area is open as usual throughout the works. The Fox Valley Weekly Market and the monthly Farmers Market is being held in a new location in the car park next to the piazza area while the work is underway and the busy schedule of musical entertainment in the centre’s bandstand will not be affected.

Since the centre opened in June 2016 the landscaped area around the cafés and restaurants has become a really popular focal point for shoppers and visitors with its multi jet fountains and large TV screen. Centre manager at Fox Valley, Sandra Barley, said: “We know how popular the piazza area is with our visitors so we’re delighted to be making these improvements to offer some-

thing new and different. “It’s going to look fantastic when the work has been completed and we have a few other changes and improvements coming up in the next few weeks so watch this space.” Further details will be announced later in the summer about the operator of the new piazza area kiosk.

SHEFFIELD skipper Kyle Howarth says he can be proud of his efforts during Monday’s British Championship Final. Tigers No.1 battled hard to total ten points from his five programmed rides - winning his fifth in ruthless nature to book his place in the semifinals. And despite temporarily leading the penultimate heat, Howarth was eventually rel-

egated to the back in what was a breathtaking night of racing in Manchester. Said Howarth: “Every heat I had was such a hard race. “I had last pick in the semi and I ended up with gate four which was always going to be a task. “It was a shame to do all the hard work, get to that semi and then get knocked out.

But all-in-all it was a great night.

hampton and Ipswich man Rory Schlein.

“It was some nice progress for me, it’s a stepping stone, I’ve done myself proud and I can keep my head held high.”

The meeting was won by Great Britain star Robert Lambert.

Sheffield’s Jack Smith also had two outings as track reserve, the first of which saw him disqualified despite making an intelligent switch back to the inside after locking up in front of Wolver-

Tigers return to Owlerton this Thursday (June 14, 7.30) when high-flying Berwick are the visitors. SCORES: Robert Lambert 15, Craig Cook 11, Dan Bewley 10, Jason Garrity 10, Scott Nicholls 10, Kyle Howarth

Barnsley Boundary success

THE main event of the running week was the Barnsley Boundary Relay, organised and promoted by Penistone Footpath Runners. The race, which comprises 71 miles of trails, tracks, roads and fields, is split into ten stages of between four and 11 miles, and covers the entire outskirts of the borough. Runners have to reccy their legs in advance, as there are few marshals en route and it

is easy for the unprepared runner to take a wrong turning. This year saw a good entry, with 34 teams entering, the proceeds of the race going to the Barnsley Rotary Club charities. Penistone fielded eight teams, with the open men’s team claiming first place in a time of 8:19.08, nine minutes in front of rivals Kimberworth Striders.

The M40 and M60 teams also won their categories, whilst the M50 team overcame the challenge of Kingstone Runners to win that award. In the women’s competition, Penistone Ladies had to settle for second place, being beaten by Barnsley AC, who also broke the female course record in the process. The L40 team also had to settle for

second place. The Mixed A team finished second, 16 minutes behind Kingstone Runners. Elsewhere, Dawn Broom ran a well-paced time of 3:52.17 at the Yeovil Town Road Runners’ Club Marathon, running through the quiet lanes of Somersetshire, to comfortably earn a Good For Age qualifying time for the London Marathon.

STOCKSBRIDGE BOWLED OUT BY DE LA SALLE STOCKSBRIDGE Cricket Club slumped to a seven-wicket defeat to De La Salle at the weekend.

But it was De La Salle bowler John O’Sullivan who stole the show, taking six wickets for just 28 runs.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Stocksbridge battled their way to a total of 146 all out with Jack Newton’s 47 being the best innings. Joe Hibbert chipped in with a knock of 23 further down the order.

A 99 not out from De La Salle’s Matt Cull saw his side race to the 147 runs needed in 31 overs, losing only three wickets. Two of those were taken by Les Harris.

PARK STEELS RESERVES HOLD PLAYER OF THE SEASON AWARDS LAST Saturday, Stocksbridge Park Steels reserves held their presentation night. This follows on from a successful season where they finished runners up in the Premier Division of the Pete’s Petiss Erie County Senior League, losing out to a strong Swinton Athletic side. Due to the adverse winter they played just short of half their season over a five week period with three games a week, which was a fantastic effort from all involved. The Player’s Player award went to Ryan McDonald and the Manager’s Player award went to Luke Townsend.
