“Remarkable woman” celebrates 100th birthday LOOK Local is pleased to report on yet another 100th birthday in north Sheffield, this time it is that of Oughtibridge woman Dorothy Bagnall. Dorothy Bagnall (nee Whitham) was born in Oughtibridge on June 26 1918. She grew up in the village and married Bill Bagnall in 1940. She worked in the umbrella department at Fox’s steel works during the war until she left to have her children, Margaret and Susan. Remaining in Oughtibridge all her life, she latterly worked as a postwoman in this area, walking miles everyday. She has two grandchildren Sarah and Hannah, and five great grand children – Amy,
ECCLESFIELD STABBING INVESTIGATION DETECTIVES are trying to establish a motive for the stabbing of a boy outside Players Lounge on Yew Lane, Ecclesfield. The 16-year-old was stabbed in his upper body just after midnight on Saturday evening.
He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Detective Constable Leon Hobson said that although a significant number of people were there, a number of witnesses have not yet come forward. Llandudno was a favourite vacation and train trips to Cleethorpes with their grandchildren was another pastime. In 2000 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Dorothy was so thrilled to receive a congratulations card from the queen. Unfortunately, after a short illness, Bill passed away later in 2000 and daughter Margaret in early 2001 but she has continued to enjoy life with her family who think the world of her. Her family describe her as a remarkable lady and one of her favourite sayings is “When I get old…” leaving her family to wonder when that might be.

Brown family to sizzle Ecclesfield Library Bangers for Bluebell launches funding drive ECCLESFIELD Library is a small, not-for-profit charity run entirely by non-paid volunteers.
Sheffield City Council funding is only guaranteed until 2020, after which the Library will have to be completely self-funding, so the trustees are now appealing to local businesses to help them ensure that this valuable community asset can remain open into the future.
A CHAPELTOWN couple are getting ready to sizzle some Bangers for Bluebell. Bev and Jim Brown are nannan and grandad to nine year old Gracie, who is supported by Bluebell Wood. Family and friends will be making donations at the barbecue on Saturday July 7, with every penny going to the children’s hospice. At the age of three, Gracie was diagnosed with Leukodystrophy Vanishing White Matter Disease, a progressive disorder for which there is no current cure. Gracie’s parents are Daniel and Charlotte.
Daniel said: “Bluebell Wood has provided Gracie with opportunities that have enriched her experience and discovery. These include a recent event meeting, stroking and holding creepy creatures, which Gracie absolutely loved. She was so proud of her own achievement, holding all the animals, and meeting the pony-unicorns. Seasonal events like the Halloween party are great for us too, because taking Gracie out trick or treating is quite difficult. The party offered the chance for us to have a slimy, spooky time in an environment that was well-suited to Gracie’s needs.
“Gracie is absolutely in love with George the dog, who is the hospice mascot and she really enjoys music therapy. Bluebell Wood gives us the chance to just enjoy our time together. Bev said: “We’re really looking forward to getting together with family and friends and hope we can raise as much as possible for Bluebell Wood, which does so much for families like ours. We have already had a fantastic response and would like to thank everyone who has generously donated so far. Gail Parkin, Community Fundraiser, Bluebell Wood, said: “We’d
like to say a big thank you to Bev and Jim and to everyone who holds a barbecue for Bluebell Wood this year. Every penny raised will help to make a real difference to families facing the toughest of times. Anyone holding a Bangers for Bluebell barbecue can share their photos on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #BangersForBluebell.
designed by local artist Kate Morgan. Bluebell Wood is also giving away Bangers for Bluebell packs, which includes recipe ideas, games and tips to make any barbecue a roaring success. In addition to its normal services the Library holds regular activities such as the Little Bears Club, Knit and Natter, and the Ecclesfield Village Heritage Reminiscence Group. Courses in painting and computer classes are also held regularly. There are frequent free events for children, such as Fun Science, Imagination Gaming and Code Club, and computers are available for those people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to the Internet. The Library is an important hub for many local residents, without which they and their children wouldn’t have access to these types of activities, or to the wide selection of wonderful books the Library offers.
If you email these pictures to marketing@ bluebellwood.org you could be the lucky winner of an exclusive, one-off original print of the digital Bangers for Bluebell artwork,
STEPS NURSERY AMENDMENT
LAST week, Look Local published a story about Paces winning a nursery. It was in fact Steps Community Nursery that had won the award. Look Local would like to apologise for the mistake and wish both Paces and Steps the best for the future. Steps held a children’s picnic party as part of our 20th anniversary celebrations and are very proud to have been awarded ‘Most Inspirational Nursery Setting for Autism Support’ at the Sparkle Sheffield Awards.
Steps Community Nursery started life as a sessional playgroup in the local church hall and moved to the Paces Community Campus in late 1997. From January 1998 it opened as a pre-school nursery and grew over the next four years to offer full day care, 50 weeks of the year. Two of the staff, Lorraine and Linda, have been involved with the group since the church hall days and began as volunteer parents. Many other members of staff have been at Steps for between 10 and 15 years.
In May they held an open evening for past families, friends and supporters to join them for a piece of celebration cake. They have also launched a refreshed logo, thanks to one of our parents. Other successes to celebrate this year include SENCO Cheryl receiving a Special Commendation from the Pre-School Learning Alliance, and being nominated by two of our parents for Sparkle Sheffield ‘Most Incredible SENCO’ Award. Also, Steps Nursery was nominated for Sparkle Sheffield ‘Most Inspirational PreSchool Nursery’.

Businesses can sponsor the Library by setting up a monthly standing order from as little as ÂŁ5 per month, paying an annual subscription or making a one-off donation. In return the company will be advertised as a sponsor on the Library’s Facebook and website, on the digital display in the Library and on notice boards. Of course, individuals can also support the Library’s work in the same way, or can simply give a small donation when they call in - “every little helpsâ€?, as the saying goes! Look out for our stall at Chapeltown Gala on Saturday July 7, where our new lottery ‘goes live’, buy a book or two and find out how you can help Ecclesfield Library to continue its valuable work. Donations can be made via the website - www.ecclesfieldlibrary.co.uk/ donate - which leads to a secure site managed by PayPal, where payments can be made using a PayPal account, or a debit or credit card. Alternatively donations can be made directly into the Library’s bank account or by cheque - details can be obtained from the Library.

PUPILS TACKLE PARENTS HEAD ON ABOUT PARKING PUPILS aged five to 11 at a primary school in Burncross have come up with a novel way to solve the parking problems blighting their school – they have become the parking patrol! On selected mornings and afternoons, so that the culprits don’t know when to expect it, the pupils themselves are donning high visibility vests and taking to the streets outside school holding up posters saying ‘Think before you park’ and ‘Please don’t pull-up here’, supported by the school’s head teacher and learning mentor. Head teacher Joanne Grantham said: “I don’t think the problem at Windmill Hill is any different to that experienced at any other school. Modern lives are so busy that sometimes common sense goes out of the window and they park or drive in a way that isn’t safe for our pupils. “However it’s an issue that’s constantly raised as a concern by parents in our parent surveys, it worries staff and clearly it
worries the pupils themselves too. They came up with the Parking Patrol idea and I’m very pleased to support them. “We’ve had a fantastic response from most parents who’ve been walking past the children praising them for taking action.” Members of the School Council for Windmill Hill Primary School, which includes two elected representatives from each of the school’s classes, have long worried about the parking outside school at the beginning and end of the day. Last year they persuaded the school’s parent-teacher association to pay for banners for the school fence, and plastic figures of school children to put outside the school, but more than six months on they’re still concerned about the issue. Emily Care, aged 10, who is the chair of the School Council said: “It’s improved a lot since we’ve been going out on parking
patrol because it’s helping children cross the road safely. “Lots of people were parking on double yellow lines, the zigzags outside of school and on the corners of the roads which meant it was very dangerous to cross. This is because it wasn’t possible to see cars coming and children had to cross the road between cars or step out into the road to get past them.” In 2017 a newspaper investigation named Sheffield drivers as the worst in Yorkshire for parking dangerously and illegally outside schools. Drivers in the city were charged for a catalogue of parking failures near schools, including parking on a pedestrian crossing, and parking on double and single yellow lines. Sheffield council revealed that 113 primary school children had been injured – 32 seriously –in crashes across the city occurring at school pick-up and drop off times over the last five years.
9,107 socially isolated older people in Sheffield - and you can help THE people of Sheffield are being called on by Contact the Elderly, the national charity working to end loneliness and social isolation amongst older people, to step forward and help the 9,107 socially isolated older people living in Sheffield. Contact the Elderly, supported by partners like People’s Postcode Lottery, provides social connections for isolated older people, helping them reconnect with their community. The charity, supported by a nationwide network of 11,000 volunteers, work with thousands
of the most socially isolated older people across the UK. Research by Age UK [1] has shown that there are 9017 isolated older people living in Rotherham. This number will only rise as the Sheffield community, along with much of the UK, ages. According to the Office for National Statistics, the number of older people in the UK will rise by over two and a half million by 2026. As the UK ages [2], increasing numbers of older people are living alone. Currently, 3.6 million older people in the

Contact the Elderly is committed to reaching as many of these socially isolated older people as possible. The charity’s Head of Service for Yorkshire, Pamela Walker, said:
Contact the Elderly needs members of the Sheffield community to step forward and help the charity reach the thousands of isolated older people living in Sheffield. Pamela Walker continued:

“To extend our service, we need help. We need the people of Sheffield to step forward and volunteer a bit of their time
to help us empower their isolated older neighbours to break out of the cycle of social isolation.” The power of Contact the Elderly’s service is revealed by surveying of the older people the charity works with. 95% told the charity that their events “give them something to look forward to” and 90% said they’d made new friends through the charity’s service. The food was exceptional, with burgers provided by Crawshaws Butchers and freshly cooked fish and chips from New Wave Fish Van.
The sun was shining and the beer tent was busy. As the smallest primary school in Sheffield, with 99 pupils on roll, it really was amazing to see the Stocksbridge community come together, with an estimated 400 visitors and have a really good time. Here’s looking forward to St Ann’s School Summer Gala 2019!
PUPILS INVOLVED IN LEADING ACTIVITIES PUPILS have been getting involved in leading PE and developing leadership capacity at Deepcar St John’s. Ryan Priest, a newly appointed sports coach, has had significant impact in encouraging pupils to get involved in PE at the school. He has set up a sports leaders programme. Sports leaders are given folders to record their progress, lead activities during lunch and after school, receive CPD training, complete lesson plans and risk assessments. Ryan said: “The school are really focused on developing pupils’ capacity to lead PE and develop their leadership and management skills. It really is a fantastic scheme. All sports leaders wear a personalised hoodie, designed by one of the pupils, Sam Bullock.”
The scheme includes pupils running games and sports at lunch times ranging from refereeing to coaching athletics, cricket, mini games and loads of other fun activities.
For each time a child joins in with sport at dinner, PE or afterschool clubs, they receive a sticker to put on their star chart.
They also run special events such as Santa shootout, elftastic basketball and reindeer training course.
The winning two from each class at the end of term get a treat afternoon and a certificate and first place also gets a medal to keep and trophy to take home for one term.
The school are getting everyone involved and active to meet the government’s guidelines of 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day and also the extra 30 to cover for the sports premium.
Since the sports leaders started, the increase in sports participation in this school has increased by almost 30% and nearly 95% of the children in school now achieve 30 minutes of moderate exercise at dinner times.
Star charts are created for each class by the leaders to measure the amount of activity done by children in each class.
Ryan added: “The scheme is so popular, pupils are having to apply for the role completing an application form for the next academic year. The next steps are to expand to help with local school Royd Infant School.”

I warn you it is shocking to see the utter lack of interest displayed by Labour and Libdem councillors who were all to eager to vote down my pleading for support. The same councillors in the same meeting were keen to spend a greater sum on a flower pot to place outside the council office.

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

So once everything has been ticked off the shopping list, what next? Leading online luggage retailers, Sportsdirect.com, offers up some top tips for making the most of any type of suitcase, for any type of holiday. Save room with miniatures. People rarely need a full bottle of shower gel when travelling abroad for less than a week; save room in the case by substituting family-sized bottles for miniature versions which can be easily rolled up in socks, or packed tightly into a compartment. Roll instead of fold. Although the majority of UK holidaymakers prefer to fold their clothes, rolling allows for more items to be packed into even the smallest of cases, and also prevent some items from creasing too much. Remove bulky packaging. Shoeboxes can be sacrificed; packing shoes and toiletries separately rather than altogether in packaging will not only allow extra room for essentials, but smaller itemsor items which can be worn creased such as underwear and socks, can be stuffed into shoes and wrapped up around bottles (handy for providing extra packaging for perfume bottles or make up). Make use of hand luggage. Many of the major airlines such as Virgin Atlantic and British Airways allow up to six kgs of hand luggage to be taken aboard the cabin. To avoid any nasty charges at check-in,

packing heavier items such as beach towels, books and hair brushes in hand luggage will free up the weight allowance and room in the main suitcase. Optimise suitcase compartments. Many suitcases come with extra zip compartments for security and protection. Fill these with toiletries, chargers and items which require immediate access upon arrival. This can prevent toiletry spillages on clothing items, as well as making space in the main suitcase compartment. Experts at Cheapflights.co.uk have also prepared this list to help plan your trip without forgetting a thing, so you can head off on your hols well prepared. TIGERS skipper Kyle Howarth was been taken to hospital in Newcastle with a dislocated shoulder. Club bosses are sweating on the extent of the damage sustained in his first outing in Sheffield’s 54-36 Championship defeat against Newcastle. And with new signings Broc Nicol and Georgie Wood falling to score it was always going to be an impossible task for the Owlerton side. Boss Damien Bates, in for the unavailable Simon Stead said: “Obviously this is a disappointing night for us and we must do better going forward. “But the injury to Kyle has been a crushing blow and we need to hope there is no long term damage there. “Hopefully the shoulder is back in place and there is nothing longer term to worry about.”
Howarth was in second place behind Ludvig Lindgren in Heat 1 at Brough Park but came to grief on the third bend, and although Carl Wilkinson and Todd Kurtz managed to take avoiding action Howarth was still left in agony. Charles Wright won his first two rides, including an early tactical substitute outing in Heat 5, but he found himself on the wrong end of a 5-1 in the next race as Matthew Wethers and Ludvig Lindgren extended the Diamonds’ lead into double figures. Kurtz also took a fall in Heat 8, before Wright and Shanes brought Sheffield back into contention with maximum points in the ninth. But Newcastle responded instantly, first with a 4-2 in an awarded Heat 10 when Nicol became the latest Tigers rider to come down, and then with a 5-1 from Stuart Robson and Wilkinson in the next.
Shanes was also disqualified for a fall in Heat 12 as Sheffield’s troubles continued, although Wright exemplified his battling spirit with a hard-fought second place against Robson in Heat 13. A further Newcastle 5-1 rubbed salt into Tigers’ wounds before Wright had the satisfaction of spoiling Lindgren’s maximum with a fine ride to win Heat 15, with a hard-working Lasse Bjerre supplying third place in a consolation race advantage. NEWCASTLE 54: Ludvig Lindgren 13+1, Matthew Wethers 11, Carl Wilkinson 10+3, Stuart Robson 9, Ashley Morris 7+1, Matej Kus 4+1, Tero Aarnio r/r. SHEFFIELD 36: Charles Wright 16, Lasse Bjerre 11, James Shanes 8+1, Todd Kurtz 1, Broc Nicol 0, Georgie Wood 0, Kyle Howarth 0.
WOODHOUSE WINS AT SERLBY BIRDWELL Wheeler Joe Woodhouse’s persistence finally paid off when he rode in the NMRRL (North Midlands Road Race League) road race over six laps of a five-mile course at Serlby.
est with Marc Peasegood second fastest. Peasegood’s results over the two events gained him the club’s 15 mile handicap trophy which will be presented at the club’s annual prize dinner in November.
No rider was able to get away from the bunch and in the final sprint Woodhouse finished 12th, his first points scoring finish of the series.
On Saturday Paul Heggie rode in the Mercia CC 30 mile Open Time Trial at Etwall in Derbyshire. His time of 1:12.39 set a new club age record at 64 years old, surpassing not only his own records set at 61 and 62 but also D Ogden’s record at 57 years old which had stood since 1984.
On Tuesday the club’s last of three 15 mile time trials took place at Thurnscoe. On a much windier evening than the previous week Trevor Mayne was again fast-

Andrew kicks his way to glory BARNSLEY College Public Services student Andrew Crooks has been chosen to represent the English Karate Alliance at the World Championships in Romania. Andrew began his journey at his local karate club where he recognised his love for the sport and found he had the ability to compete at world competition level. The 17-year-old moved up through the grades and gained recognition from the English Karate Alliance governing body.
Andrew will compete against some of the best karate fighters on the international circuit. To prepare for the competition he has a gruelling daily training routine, with a five hour training session in the evening after his studies at College.
Andrew said: “I’m looking forward to competing in a prestigious international event and gaining experience from it. I’m currently the European Champion for my age and weight so this will be a great test of my abilities.
Andrew is part of the Barnsley Sports Academy within College and has access to an Elite Sports Performance Bursary to fund equipment and travel.
“The College understands the demands to compete at a higher level and the support I have received has really helped me to pursue my goals in karate.”

War Memorial Ladies celebrate with awards ANGELA Smith MP was the special guest at the recent Oughtibridge War Memorial FC Presentation evening with the ladies’ first team picking up the East Midlands Regional League runner-up trophy in what was a fantastic season that included a long run tom the semi finals of the County Cup. Individual awards went to Lauren Turner, Kathryn Mudge, Jenny Selman, Laura Watton and Milly Wilson. The ladies’ development team also celebrated a fine debut season with individual awards going to Joely Sykes, Kelsey Murphy Bigley, Kelly Biney and Nicola Masling. Both teams will resume training in early July and new players will be made most welcome, contact Andy Cain on 07981097246 for more details.
Newton batted superbly and put on a partnership of 100 with Elliot Freeman getting 55 and Bob Newton getting his first half century of the the season with a superb 71. A brisk 28 from Jack Reeves and a return to form for Tom Dobson with 43 set the home team up for an imposing total of 238. The Hathersage innings never really got going with an early
run out from Mark Wingfield and three wickets in an over from Chris Thwaites ended any likelihood of them chasing the score down. Another three wickets from Mark Wingfield and two from Paul Hargreaves, his first wickets for the club, gave Stocksbridge a comprehensive victory and moved out of the relegation zone.

Stocksbridge head coach looks to new season and beyond WITH Stocksbridge Rugby Club now back in training ahead of the new rugby union season, Look Local caught up with head coach Rhys Keenan. Q. How long have you been involved and what first attracted you to the club? A. I have been involved with the club now for over 20 years, I started in the juniors and moved up through the club. Friends got me into the sport and we have all stuck together and carried on. Q. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your role? A. The most challenging aspect of my current coaching role is to improve the lads’ skill, and mind set every week, whilst also providing an enjoyable and fun rugby environment. The rewarding aspects are when the lads deliver on the field, what we have been doing in training, and also seeing individuals improve as players. It’s also nice adding something new to the team as a whole. Q. How’s the general mood down at the club at the moment? A. Despite us being relegated last Year, the mood at the club at the moment is at a good level, with over 26 players training each week plus five or six new players turning up and enjoying the sessions. The lads are keen to get back into the rugby and can’t wait for the league campaign to start. We have a feel good factor currently and want to make the most if it. I think myself and Andy have brought a bit of stability back to the club. Q. How would you say the season has gone for the club? A. Last season was a tough one for the lads, with two or three different coaches coming and leaving for various reasons. Towards the back end of the season when me and Andy took over the lads seemed to have a bit more pride,
Looking to a bright future for the Pigs: Head coach Rhys Keenan, centre. and seemed to begin to enjoy their rugby a bit more. The end of the season came around too early for us, we were developing and improving, but it was just too late to save us. Q. What are your plans for the rest of 2018? A. Andy Tyers and myself are committed to keep the lads improving every week, whilst enjoying their rugby. We as a team will look to finish in the top three, so whilst the lads will be enjoying their rugby they will be put through their paces, and there will be an expectation on them too. Q. How important is youth rugby to the club? A. Youth rugby is the actual life blood of the club development, many of the current first 15 started in the clubs youths teams, and still continue to play every week. Junior development is key to the club’s playing future. Q. How does the club ensure that young players enjoy a smooth transition into the senior game?
A. Is there ever a really smooth transition to senior rugby? The club always encourages the senior sides and the junior side to work together wherever possible. Senior coaches and players offer training sessions for the juniors which keep the juniors and seniors tight as one club. The clubs programme goes from minis up to the Under 17’s programme. Then into the senior colts or senior development team programme. All these programmes are closely monitored by the committee, team mangers and myself, as head coach of the club. Q. Would you consider yours to be a community club? A. Absolutely, our club is a community club definitely, we offer our pitches to the junior football teams for training, we have cycling clubs using our facilities, as well as the local scout and cubs groups. We look to work with the local Community as much as possible, and we as a club use/approach the local businesses and services before anyone or anything else.
Q. What do you believe could be some of the biggest challenges the club may face in the coming years? A. A challenge will be to cultivate the forever growing junior section, we seem to get more and more juniors every session. We will be looking for more qualified coaches to help and progress this junior section, with a coach mentoring programme too. The biggest challenge I have is setting up a ladies team at the club, if we want to move forward as a community club we must offer ladies rugby. Q. What are the clubs ambitions for the next five years? A. Over the next five years the club will look to improve the current training facilities, we will also introduce a ladies rugby team, and run two successful colts teams from the junior development. The senior rugby section looks to push on into the senior Yorkshire Leagues like Yorkshire Three and towards Yorkshire Two.

FORMER Stocksbridge Park Steels striker Jamie Vardy was unveiled as the greatest player in the history of the Northern Premier League on Saturday night as the competition celebrated its 50th birthday. Vardy came out on top after thousands of votes and nominations from fans, clubs and members of the media for the EVOSTIK League’s top 100 players of the last five decades over the course of the historic 50th anniversary 2017-18 season. Now one of the most famous names in English Football, the England striker joined Stocksbridge Park Steels in 2007 before making the move to FC Halifax for £15,000 and helping the Shaymen win the NPL Premier League title. Moved to Fleetwood Town and helped them gain promotion before setting a Non-League Record of £1,000,000 in his move to Leicester City. During time with the Foxes, he helped them to one of the biggest upsets in football history when they lifted the Premier League title two years ago as 5000-1 rank outsiders. The 30-year-old, who equalled the Premier League record for scoring in 11 consecutive games in 2015-16 on the way to the title, currently has 17 caps for England.
