Pen Show18_Look Local Ad 93x65mm.indd 1

POLICE officers investigating the death of a man in Chapeltown have named him as 59year-old Glenn Boardman.

Detectives investigating the death of Mr Boardman in the Chapeltown area of Sheffield have charged a man with his murder. Michael Andrew Goddard, 50, of Steven Close in Chapeltown has been remanded to custody and appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Friday June 29. An investigation was launched into Mr Boardman’s death after his body was discovered at a house in Steven Close, just before 12.30am on Tuesday June 26. Emergency services were

called to the house but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination concluded that 59-year-old Mr Boardman died as a result of stab wounds.

Specialist officers are working with and providing support to Mr Boardman’s family, who have asked for their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time. Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Handley said: “We are still in the very early stages of our investigation and are currently progressing a number of lines of

enquiry to understand the exact circumstances of the incident. “There is a dedicated team of officers working to review CCTV and forensic evidence, and I would urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident to please report it.

“This incident occurred at a property on a cul-de-sac and anyone who may have seen anything, even if they believe it to be irrelevant is asked to contact police.” Anyone with any information is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 29 of 26 June 2018. You can also speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Glenn Boardman, 59, was killed by stab wounds.

WARNINGS OVER FIRES AFTER THURLSTONE BLAZE PENISTONE Fire Station crews tackled a blaze in Thurlstone on Wednesday – one of many across the country after a spate of dry weather. The incident was reported at 7.10pm on Wednesday June 27 on Hornthwaite Hill Road, Thurlstone. Crews tackled what they described as a 50m x 50m stretch of heathland adjacent to Hornthwaite Hill Road. Access up Hornthwaite Hill was cut off due to the fire engines and appliances. Another fire occurred in Thurlstone on the morning of Tuesday July 3. Fire crews are warning the public to take extra care during this period of hot weather to avoid any accidental grass fires. During hot and dry weather the risk of grass fires increases, but following

a few simple steps can greatly reduce the chance of a fire starting. Fire officers are asking people to help prevent grass fires by: •Not using open fires in the countryside •Making sure any barbecue or disposable barbecue is only used in a suitable location and is extinguished properly after use •Extinguishing cigarettes completely and not throwing cigarette ends on the ground •Not leaving bottles or glass in woodland – sunlight shining through glass can start fires Fire crews want their resources available to protect the communities of South Yorkshire, incidents involving accidental grass fires can use up a lot of these vital resources.

Labrador Welfare Fun Day LABRADOR Welfare, the Sheffield based Rescue Charity for Labrador Retrievers, will be holding their Annual Fun Day on Sunday July 15 at Grenoside Community Centre from 12 noon to 4pm. There will be a full programme of events including a dog show with various categories. Light refreshments will be available. All welcome including non-Labrador owners and dogs. Entrance is free. For people travelling to the event from the M1, they might find it easier to exit the M1 at Junction 35 towards Chapeltown (Cowley Lane) and then input S35 8PR into their Sat Nav from that point.

The five friends in training for the challenge and Daniel Barden, right FIVE friends are attempting to climb the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales to raise money for the mental health charity MIND – in memory of their friend Daniel Barden who took his own life in January after battling anxiety and depression. They will tackle the challenge on Friday July 13, starting at the bottom of Ben Nevis at 5pm on Friday and hopefully finishing at the bottom of Snowdon at 5pm on Saturday July 14. They will be walking over 27 miles up and down Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon and driving 500 miles between all three mountains in 24 hours. The five men are Rob Daly, David Jowitt, Gavin Fleetwood, Robin Briggs and Mark Woodcock and as well as raising money, they hope to raise awareness too. Rob told Look Local: “In January this year we received the devastating news that our friend Daniel Barden, 33, father to Molly and husband to Shelley had tak-

en his own life after a short battle with anxiety and depression.

in public or private which in itself is a significant problem.

“My dad has tried to take his own life three years ago, before suffering a mental breakdown and Gavin, who is one of the five of us attempting this challenge, has suffered a battle himself with anxiety and depression two years ago.

“Support needs to be improved. During the last Parliament, funding for Mental Health services was cut by 8% - almost £600m! MIND are holding the government to their promise of treating mental health and physical health equally by 2020 and improving access to services and support to high quality, 24/7, life saving crisis care for all.

“All three are and were very outgoing, sociable and loved men that you wouldn’t have associated with this illness but depression and Anxiety can affect anyone, in any walk of life and at any point in their lives. It can lead to a dark hopelessness that sometimes hides behind a smile while friends and family are tragically unaware of the internal mental battle they are going through. “In the UK, 12 men a day commit suicide. Men aged between 20 and 45 are more likely to die from suicide than from cancer, a road accident or heart disease. It is the biggest threat we face as men in this age group as a nation, the number one killer, yet it is something we hardly discuss

Stocksbridge Community Project calls for more local people to get involved THE Meeting Place Social Café in Stocksbridge is calling for local people to join their volunteer team to help to support people from the area who are feeling lonely or isolated. The Meeting Place is a social café - a friendly place where people who are feeling lonely can meet and enjoy time together, have a coffee and a bit of breakfast or lunch, have a go at a new activity, or just sit and read the newspaper in the company of others. It runs every Monday morning at Christ Church Community Hall on Manchester Road in Stocksbridge. Sarah Knightley, co-ordinator of The Meeting Place, said:

Volunteers help out in the kitchen preparing food and making drinks; chat with group members to ensure they feel welcome within the group and offer a listening ear if needed; and often share their own hobbies and interests within the group, such as gardening, arts and crafts, and games.

“At the moment we particularly need new volunteers in the kitchen and to support our arts and crafts activities, but any help would be very much appreciated.” The Social Café needs new volunteers to support an increasing number of group members who are accessing the project,

WHEN, in July 2007, during the Sheffield floods, the nearby Charlton Brook left the Newton Hall under several feet of water the future looked bleak. It was many months later in the spring of 2008 that the hall was able to re-open. Today, ten years later, the Newton Hall is a thriving Community hall at the centre of Chapeltown life.

The hall was built by the now defunct Newton Chambers Co for use by its employees. Having been subject to neglect for a number of years the running of the Hall was taken over by a dozen local people. Later the hall became a charitable Trust under a Board of Trustees. It is now one of the finest community halls around and it also belongs to the people. Newton Hall is well known throughout

the region for hosting dances. The trustees run dances on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Other groups also run dances at the Newton Hall so that in total there are dances five days out of seven. A spokesperson for the hall told Look Local: “We are aware of the closure of several surrounding dance venues and we offer a warm welcome to anyone looking for a new dance venue. We take

pride that our admission charges have not increased in the last ten years and they represent excellent value for money. “However, the Newton Hall is first and foremost a community hall. It has required a lot of hard work and freely given time but the last ten years has seen the Newton Hall rise from disaster to success. Come and join us, we need your support, and you will be most welcome.”

Hibberd, beating Denmark in the final.

Dozens of spectators turned up to cheer on the competitions with a real family fun day atmosphere which saw the tournament conclude just in time for players and supporters to watch England’s 6-1 win over Panama in Russia in the actual World Cup.

The event was supported by both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday with the club’s mascots Ozzie Owl and Bertie Blade joining the fun.

Iran were the winners of the Paces World Cup with their team, led by captain Matthew

Spencer Pitfield, Paces Chief Executive – who played in the Paces team in the tournament – said: “Our Paces five-a-side World Cup was a fantastic event and I want to thank everyone who made it

a success – from the teams who took part to the volunteers who provided the family fun and the businesses and organisations who supported them on the day. “The money raised will go towards supporting the children, adults and families who we support at Paces day-in, day-out. We couldn’t do that without events like this raising money so I can guarantee the money will be well spent.”

Hillsborough & surrounding areas FEATURE

This week, we take a walk through Hillsborough - full of history and quirky features. It has one of the country’s top dog racing tracks, a casino, a leisure centre, a college, an enormous park and a football ground – home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Wednesday held their Owls in the Park event at the weekend and it was a huge success with scores of supporters turning out to meet the players. And there’s more good news for Hillsborough – the park has been chosen to host the main stage of the Tramlines Festival stage for the first time this year. This follows spells on Devonshire Green and the Ponderosa. Fans of architecture will find a few treasures too, such as the red brick church and the former Victorian swimming baths that is now a pub. The enormous Hillsborough Park provides a robust and healthy heartbeat to the community, where all p from young to old can use, enjoy and come together. The park boasts - a library, a walled garden, a duck pond, tennis courts, football pitches, bowling greens, a playground and an adventure playground. The park is also the venue for many sporting clubs who are often seen running or cycling through the park of an evening or weekend. The popular parkrun takes every Saturday morning at 9am. The park is also host to many outdoor events such as the travelling circus and fair, Hillsfest, Fake festival, and Owls in the Park to name a few. But what we’re featuring here are the businesses that trade in the Hillsborough area. A hotspot for shoppers, Hillsborough has a wide selection of shops and businesses with easy transport links to the city centre and other areas of Sheffield.

It lies at the point where the River Loxley and the River Rivelin flow into the River Don, making for a thriving place to visit full of history. Hillsborough has faced some adversity in its journey to being the hub of activity that it is now. The Great Sheffield Flood caused much devastation in Sheffield and approximately 42 people were killed in the Hillsborough area alone. It was also host to a terrible football disaster which is still a widely-debated subject now. With the success of the steel and engineering industries in Sheffield, the area began to recover as there was an increased demand for suburban housing. The arrival of the tram in 1903 was a big boost to the development of the suburb; it initially ran as far as the top of Parkside Road before extending to Middlewood in 1913. House build-

ing continued until around 1909 when most of present day Hillsborough’s road infrastructure had been created. The name of the suburb comes from Hillsborough House built and named in 1779 in tribute to the Earl of Hillsborough who lived in Hillsborough, County Down. For 124 years the house was a private dwelling, but since 1906 it has housed the Hillsborough branch library. Hillsborough made history after a deal made last year, when the Bassets factory became the first place in England to manufacture the world-famous biscuit Oreo, adding to the list of global brands already being produced in Sheffield. It’s also plays host to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club, one of the oldest professional clubs in the world and the third oldest in the English league. The team have played their home games at the Hillsborough Stadi-

um, previously named Owlerton, since 1899. The centre of Hillsborough is known as Hillsborough corner, where Langsett Road, Middlewood Road, Holme Lane and Bradfield Road all meet. Here is where shoppers can find a wide selection of independent businesses in the heart of Hillsborough. The place continues to thrive with amenities such as butchers, florists, and many family run businesses in addition to its selection of cafes, bars and restaurants. The shopping centre, Hillsborough Exchange, sits on Middlewood Road and features an array of shops to make for a worthwhile trip for anyone looking to shop for a day. Shoppers may also be interested in visiting Hillsborough Barracks, a walled complex of buildings with even more businesses to offer.

It’s not too late to make a will... Hello, I’m Jane Bowland, your local consultant of 10 years experience. We are experts in helping people arrange their wills, trusts and lasting powers of attorney. I specialise in helping all kinds of people gain peace of mind by providing professional estate planning services, but with a personal touch. I offer a FREE consultation without obligation for anybody who would like to know more about any of the following:

• Making a basic will • Setting up lasting powers of attorney • Protecting your home from care fees • Pre–paid funeral plans

Precious memories

10.06.81 - 08.07.2013 Always in our thoughts Forever in our hearts

Setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney gives the people that YOU choose the legal right to look after your financial and personal affairs if you become unable to do so. Without one in place, your spouse, partner or family members are NOT automatically able

to take over. Make sure you avoid the distress this can cause you and your loved ones. I know that planning for the future is a very personal matter. Not everyone is able or wants to travel to an appointment in town to sort out their affairs. I can visit you at a convenient time in the comfort and privacy of your own home to discuss your circumstances. My visit and consultation is completely free and you are under no obligation

to do anything. If you decide to make any arrangements you can be safe in the knowledge that all my professional services and work are fully insured and I am a member of the Society of Will Writers, so all my clients are assured of being fully protected at all times. All my clients (and their families) that I have helped in the past have been very happy with my services and tell me they have gained great peace of mind knowing that they have sorted everything out.

Jane came to see my parents to help them protect the family home from any future care fees. She really made us all feel at ease, especially my parents. We had no idea what we could do to protect Mum and Dad. Having set up trusts and Lasting Power of Attorney’s, Mum and Dad can get on with their lives without worrying, knowing everything is now in place. Thank you Jane!

Kayleigh, who has worked in the fitness industry for over 16 years, continued: “As an all-female personal training and fitness studio, we differentiate ourselves from a typical gym, because we focus on a more client-orientated experience. “Our goal for Tone House has always been to create a safe supportive environment where women of all ages, shapes and sizes feel welcome, accepted and can learn to develop a healthy lifestyle through our safe and progressive training, one-toone guidance and support, 30 minute circuits and nutritional programs.” Throughout the month Tone House will be celebrating its third anniversary with lots of

Straight from the Captain’s table

RICKY ROWETT has been named as captain for Stocksbridge RUFC for the coming season and has spoken about the task he charged with. Rowett said: “After 17 years playing for Stockbridge Rugby, both at junior and senior level, I decided it was time to throw my hat in to the mix and progress my playing career. Fortunately I was give the honour, and voted in as captain for the upcoming season. “The end of last season saw the Stockbridge Rugby of old reignited. This was due to the fact that the lads start to enjoy their rugby once again. My main aim is to make sure every player carries that same attitude, feeling and presence on to the field. “I am certain that if the lads both new and old just do that one thing myself and the coaching team ask of them, which is nothing more than to enjoy

their rugby the rest will come, and not a single team in this league will cope with our tempo. “I am certain that promotion is well within our grasp. “This season gives us the ideal opportunity to focus and have a decent run for some silver wear, I believe something like this gives the team heart, something physical which at the end of the day they can say they’ve earned. “As for playing, I am looking forward to leading from the front. I have a great team behind me, I may need to channel my aggression slightly as I have picked up the odd yellow card in the past and maybe a red, but this will not alter my playing style, my drive and ferocity to get over the game line and lead Stockbridge Rugby to victory.

“Preseason has been going spectacularly well with record numbers of attendees and at least 10 new faces. Preparations by the coaching staff for our defensive systems & game plans have been accepted willingly by all. “I would like to thank Bob Woods and lads that have been taking the extra time out of their busy lives to update the changing rooms for the forthcoming season to give the players a more enjoyable playing experience. Which hopefully will give the lads something to aspire to.” “I would also like to thank the numerous sponsors for the season, from both the local community and afar. “I would like to finish by thanking the players and committee for believing in me. I hope I do the club proud and I will do the job to the best of my ability.”

Hawks rule over Queensbury IN a very physical, high tempo and high temperature match Sheffield Hawks again showed how good a team they have become. Conditions and injuries again took their toll but Hawks resilience and control saw them destroy the opposition in the second half. Hawks moved onto a two try lead after Reuben Kateregga and Spencer Poppleton scored trade mark tries. Kateregga danced through from 40 metres after an impressive drive up the field. Poppleton scored a burrowing try from dummy half despite the attentions of three Queensbury players. Queensbury came back hard, making the most of a couple of knock-ons and an isolated wing on a fifth tackle bomb to score two quick tries. The first half ended Hawks 12, Queensbury 10. In the second half Hawks turned possession and control in to points. Defensively they were immense scoring four tries to Queensbury’s one. Kateregga added three tries and Joe Littlewood scored another superb try to keep him at the top of the list this season.

Sheffield Hawks 32-14 Queensbury ARLFC

Littlewood and Harry Edgar were superb in the middle of the pitch and with support from a very mobile forward unit, most of whom were playing

out of position after Pat Wakefield, Will Burns and Poppleton were withdrawn with injuries. Littlewoood and his re-ordered line played fantastic rugby with Max Blackburn, Ed Measures and Callan Drewery taking everything that Queensbury threw at them. Josh Bilton at full-back ran hard and kept the defensive effort marshalled well, with Robert Harden snatching possession back three times as Queensbury strived to get through. Joseph Tipping stepped up his game and was impressive going forward. The tries scored were all well worked using width and pace to set Kateregga free. One try in particular stands out. It involved backs and forwards controlling the ball, working a set play and scoring from 70 metres out, after runs from Edgar, Bilton and Drewery as well as a perfectly timed pass from Blackburn to release Kateregga who beat four players to score under the sticks. All of the Sheffield tries were well structured and impressively finished. Defensively Hawks punch well above their weight and every member of the team deserves high praise indeed for dominating a team that is second in their league. Hawks are impressing with their finishing and commitment no matter what the opposition.
